josinalvohi there ! My mom is using a xubuntu, and frequently alters xfce configurations by accident. I'd like to avoid that by changing the permissions of the config files. Where are them ? Can I set them to have no write permissions, or will xfce work badly ?02:22
Zeededhmmm02:24
ZeededJust wondering02:24
ZeededHow the hell do you "accidentally" alter them? Now I am still SOME WHAT new to Linux, but that is not something that happens on accident easily :/02:25
The_SystemHi02:41
The_Systemany one there? i need help with something02:41
The_Systemhello?02:48
josinalvoZeeded: i am not here when she does it =P I just find all icons in the task bar misconfigured. They used to be shortcuts to programs, but end completely undefined02:48
ZeededAh02:49
josinalvoThe_System: usually, dont ask to ask =P and know that on IRQ people take time to respond02:49
ZeededWell I can understand that.02:49
ZeededThe_System; Just ask and people will answer02:49
The_SystemWell02:54
The_Systemi'm having trouble installing my radeon drivers02:54
The_Systemsorry btw, i'm used to a game i play's irc, when like every one is always talking hah02:55
The_Systemany way, i have the drivers downloaded02:56
The_Systemand all of the tutorials on how to install i found it either are wrong, or don't really explain what to do, like what to type in the shell02:57
josinalvoThe_System: as far as I know, you could use the tools in xubuntu, and download would be automatic ... (sorry, but I dont know exactly where. Should be in a systems>proprietary drivers or something)03:02
The_Systemokay03:07
The_Systemnow it says i dont have 3d acceleration enabled03:07

pfctdayelisehow do i change which program auto-starts when i insert a CD?05:32
JinKazamahi all :)09:35
lmartin92favro: the mouse config died yesterday........11:30
favrolmartin92: I had a mouse that wouldn't work after login - unplugging/replugging it got it going - as for your situation I can only suggest it might be hardware issues? - time for a new mouse maybe?11:32
ohgodnotanother1hi11:41
ohgodnotanother1when I insert a data CD it doesn't get mounted. what could be the problem? I've burnt it with brasero11:41
ohgodnotanother1the CD contains an AVI file and it does playback on my DVD player without any problems11:42
TheSheepohgodnotanother1: have you tried to mount it manually?11:44
ohgodnotanother1i don't know the device name11:45
TheSheepohgodnotanother1: /dev/cdrom11:45
TheSheepohgodnotanother1: mount /dev/cdrom  should work11:45
ohgodnotanother1TheSheep: I feel dumb now, but that did work11:46
TheSheepohgodnotanother1: that's actually bad, because it means the automounter doesn't work for some reason11:46
ohgodnotanother1TheSheep: brasero said it was unable to eject the CD - whereas it did eject it - and stopped without performing a dataintegrity check. what could cause this?11:47
TheSheepohgodnotanother1: can you go to setting manager -> file manager -> advanced and click on 'configure volume manager' link, then make sure the options in there allow automounting?11:47
ohgodnotanother1TheSheep: I checked the settings manager and it should mount ejectable media automatically11:47
lmartin92favro: I guess so11:48
TheSheephmm... might be that brasero didn't leave your cd drive in the previous state11:48
ohgodnotanother1TheSheep; "Enable Volume Management" is checked11:49
TheSheeplmartin92: is it an USB or PS/2 mouse?11:49
TheSheepor maybe COM...11:49
lmartin92TheSheep: USB12:10
lmartin92favro: do you think sudo modprobe usbmouse would restart the mouse? (read it somewhere a year ago if I remember right)12:10
favrolmartin92: afaik you have to remove then reinsert a module12:11
favroafaik...12:11
TheSheeplmartin92: you might check lsusb to see if the mouse appears in there, and dmesg for any errors...12:12
lmartin92it doesn't show up12:12
lmartin92it shows a couple of other usb devices though12:12
lmartin92dmesg (apt-get install *) what will * = to get dmesg12:15
TheSheeplmartin92: it should be there12:15
TheSheeplmartin92: just type 'dmesg'12:16
lmartin92funny, worked that time, but the first time I tried it didn't work, guess I mistyped12:16
tilluxheya, I'm trying to find out the name of xubuntu-app: it's the one that provides some kind of splash screen (not the boot splash), for example there is one "theme" for that app that shows a mous running in the ubuntu-logo or a 'flashing' mouse ;)12:16
tillux+an12:17
TheSheeptillux: check settings manager, splash screen12:17
tilluxTheSheep: I want to know the app's name, not where to find it, 'cause I know that it's in the settings manager :D (btw I haven't got an xubuntu installation anywhere nearby rightnow)12:18
TheSheeptillux: I think it's part of xfce4-session12:18
tilluxTheSheep: okay, do you by chance know if there's an equivalent of it in ubuntu/gnome?12:18
TheSheeptillux: I know that gnome used to have a splash screen too, but no idea how it's called12:19
TheSheeptillux: and whether it's still there12:19
lmartin92[  664.922791] usb 2-5: device not accepting address 37, error -71; think that's my dumb mouse?12:19
TheSheeplmartin92: yes, that's a broken cable12:19
tilluxTheSheep: okay, thanks12:19
TheSheeplmartin92: or some other connection along the way12:20
TheSheeplmartin92: I had teh same error with my scanner, replacing the cable fixed it12:20
lmartin92TheSheep: my mouse works atm, but it dies everyonce in a while...... (I hope you didn't think because of my non-clarification that my mouse was dead atm)12:21
TheSheeplmartin92: so there must be a loose wire12:22
TheSheeplmartin92: maybe I'm wrong, you can google for the error and see if someone had something similar12:22
lmartin92ok12:23
lmartin92(however, I think I have noticed that when I can't use my mouse, all other usb devices die also........ so I started to think it was a usb problem)12:23
TheSheeplmartin92: may be, the missing link may be anywhere alongthe way, in mouse, in usb hub, inside your computer12:24
TheSheeplmartin92: but if it only happens with the mouse...12:24
lmartin92yes, (this may mean I have to open the system up again; sigh.....)12:25

uwavhi. i'm having some trouble getting resolutions configured properly in xubuntu hardy 8.04 lts. what i've done so far is edit xorg.conf to use the "nv" driver (nvidia riva 128 onboard graphics on this computer) and also set the proper HorizSync and VertRefresh statements in the Monitor section16:31
uwavbefore, the resolution was way too low, 800x600 @ 60 Hz but that was fixed after adding the proper sync statements. now my resolution is too high, and for some weird reason also my fonts are a bit smaller than they should be, even after lowering the resolution through the GUI16:32
uwavalso the GUI seems to only set the resolution for the particular user, the log in screen is still in too high resolution16:32
wols_set the resolutions you want in your xorg.conf too16:47
