nandthorwil: hey! you around?11:27
thorwilnand: kinda11:39
nandthorwil: ok, it's not urgent :) I was wondering under which licence you wanted to ... licence your artwork.11:40
thorwilnand: pick one that is practical for the project11:41
nandthorwil: okay :)11:42
dLightningHello all!17:27
=== DanaG1 is now known as DanaG
BoogyWoehello ubuntu artwork team23:21
__mikemquick question, what does the new theme look like now?23:34
DanaGThere23:41
DanaGThere is not yet a "THE" new theme.23:42
__mikemoh man, but I have been in suspense all summer :(23:42
Cimino new cool theme before 9.1023:42
Cimiso october 200923:43
Cimino one have patched GTK+ to support RGBA colormaps, and then nothing new and cool can be added23:43
__mikemCimi, I was promiced a new theme next in 8.04 then they pushed it back to 8.10, now you are telling me I have to wait yet ANOTHER year?23:43
CimiI haven't promiced anything23:43
Cimiif ubuntu/canonical did... that's not my fault23:44
__mikemCimi, I know, I am not mad at you23:44
BoogyWoeis the theme of ubuntu changing or are more fundamental things changing... like using avant-window-navigator by default?23:44
* DanaG hugs his rounded scrollbars...23:44
DanaGIt just 'feels' nice, somehow.23:45
__mikemanyway, are there atleast some resent screenshots I can look at?23:45
kwwiithere might be more change than one expects in the end23:46
Cimi__mikem: for cool things you have to read my blog23:46
kwwiior there might be less23:46
Cimiat least my tests23:46
__mikemCimi, link?23:47
Cimikwwii: everything depends on the patches for the GtkStatusIcon that may start another process23:47
Cimi__mikem: http://www.cimitan.com/blog/category/murrine/23:48
Cimiread this category23:48
Cimiaka transparent themes that will let the themers to play with roudness and things like this23:48
Cimifor example this theme is functional, it is not a mockup http://www.cimitan.com/blog/wp-content/rgba-murrine-170208.png23:49
__mikemI don't want to "play with" the theme, I want a good looking theme out of the box23:49
__mikemthe human theme is a good looking theme, but its grown old23:49
Cimiyeah, there you can look at it23:49
Cimikwwii: you should really ask mark to involve another dev23:51
Cimiat least for this project23:51
kwwiiCimi: trust me, I have23:51
Cimiok23:51
Boogy`can I ask if the next version of ubuntu will look more like gOS?23:51
Cimieven if you don't want to play with transparency: rounded menus for example and things like these23:51
Boogy`like.. the style is more mac like23:52
kwwiiBoogy`: no, not necessarily23:52
CimigOS is damn ugly IMHO23:52
Boogy`well look23:52
Boogy`gOS only exsits to make ubuntu look good for "regular" people23:52
Boogy`albeit on small net-tops23:53
kwwiisimply copying anything is a bad idea, long term23:53
__mikemI heard that Mark Shuttleworth called on the ubuntu devs to create a bran new desktop environment to replace gnome and kde that would be more like the mac23:53
kwwiisome things can do that but ubuntu can't23:53
kwwiiit simply makes no sense23:53
Boogy`why redo the whole inviroment23:53
kwwiiwe should learn and move ahead23:53
Boogy`you already can make you ubunu look like a mac23:53
kwwiibut then again, to do that we need more desktop devs anyway23:53
__mikemBoogy`, gnome is good but its a bit dated23:53
kwwiiBoogy`: I don't want to make a mac clone23:54
kwwiiI agree that that would be easy23:54
Boogy`ok.. not "clone"23:54
kwwiiminus the apps23:54
Boogy`but someone like it23:54
Boogy`somewhat*23:54
__mikemkwwii, you don't need a mac clone, you just need something that is pretty and polished like the mac23:54
Cimithen they can buy a mac :)23:54
Boogy`yes... what mikem said23:54
Cimiyou cant23:55
Cimibecause mac is actually having ONE theme23:55
Cimiand they have a custom design for every application23:55
kwwii__mikem: yes, I agree that it should be as amazing, beautiful, etc23:55
kwwiibut we simply do not have the resources to work like that23:55
Cimiin fact when you approach a mac skin you have to make a thousand pixmaps for every application23:55
Cimilinux apps are difefrent23:56
Cimithey have a similar look because they use the same widget without a custom look (except banshee 1.x)23:56
__mikemCimi, I said this before. Linux used to be able to stand out simply because it was more stable and more secure, but with OSX Leopard in the picture, linux is no longer unique in that regard. Not only that but OSX has the stability and security of linux and a pretty face to boot. Linux is not behind. Linux can no longer compete simply on the basis of its superior archetecture, we need a new GUI for ubuntu.23:56
__mikemI have to restart, brb23:56
Boogy`can I ask... if I would like to contribute to the GUI-feel of ubuntu.. how would I go about doing that?23:57
CimiI don't need a new look to be happy with ubuntu :)23:57
CimiBoogy` as I said, without that gtk+ patch we can't much23:57
kwwiiactually he has a very good point....mac has the advantage of knowing all the hardware details so everything just works but we could be just as beautifull if someone wanted it to be23:58
kwwiisomeone meaning someone with a lot of money23:58
* Cimi totally agrees23:58
kwwiiit would be very expensive23:58
Boogy`oh come on guys... I like.. "want" to help furthur ubuntu's world domination23:58
CimiBoogy` so go and learn C and Gtk+23:58
Boogy`so how would I be able to do that with my limited skills at simply pointing out what doesnt look good23:59
kwwiigive me and 3 other artists 10 developers to work with and things would change quickly23:59
__mikemokay back23:59
kwwiiBoogy`: that is the easy part, lots of people know what they do not like23:59
kwwiiBoogy`: the point is to make things better by actively changing things23:59
