[04:45] I can try... [04:46] what is up? [04:46] Well I'm a CCNA student and am trying to break into the IT field of networking. [04:47] I'm wondering if setting up an Ubuntu Server with a spare computer would be educational [04:47] educational in what way? [04:47] I mean what are the limits of U Server at home [04:48] um... not really following what you mean... [04:48] I have an extra computer and all I do is run F@H on it and SSH into it. [04:48] I would assume given the right home network the limits of the Ubuntu server would be the same as any other place... [04:48] I am wondering if setting up U Server would provide me with some good IT experience [04:48] What kind of IT are you looking to get in too? [04:49] networking as in file servers or networking as in Cisco / HP Procurve kinda gear? [04:49] Cisco at this point [04:50] I'm studying for the CCNA right now. [04:50] To be honest then I am not sure if running an Ubuntu server would help with that at all... [04:50] Unless you setup a router / switch at home and made vlans [04:50] then looked at what different settings did when you connected to the file server... [04:51] Yeah I know it wont help in that area but... running a server would help me get acquainted with the OS [04:51] yes... [04:51] but the OS has little or nothing to do with switches and routers [04:51] Yeah I know... Sorry to throw that in the mix. I just wanted to establish a baseline of knowledge. [04:52] if you were doing one of the security Cisco certs it might help... you could run some VMs and take pokes at different services and OSes [04:52] Personally... if you want a good overview of servers... [04:52] download both Ubuntu Server (or Debian) and Windows Server 2008 and set both of them up [04:53] Windows server 2008 will allow 180 days of evaluation [04:53] which should be long enough to play with the OS [04:53] You are also far more likely to run in to that in the field [04:53] Ubuntu does have some interesting stuff... but it likely will not affect you in your CCNA [04:54] if you want to build some knowledge build a LAMP server -- first by selecting it in the build... [04:54] then try doing it manually. [04:55] LAMP? [04:55] Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP [04:56] Ah cool. So what is your involvement with U Server [04:56] Very little at the moment [04:56] may set one up soon though [04:56] I have focused on the desktop thus far... [04:57] I am a sys admin by day -- running Windows and OS X servers [04:58] Ah cool, did you get certified? And if so was that before or after getting a job? [04:58] my plan with Ubuntu server will be to learn how to run a file server, and directory server and the Apache/MySql combo [04:58] I have no certs [04:59] most people get them before they get hired... [04:59] unless they work for a training company or consultant [04:59] then they get them both before and after hiring [04:59] Ok I'm busting my ass off over here, I hope it pays off [04:59] where are you? [05:00] NC [05:00] Yeah... the CCNA and most Cisco certs are well respected unlike the Microsoft Certs [05:00] NC is a good area for tech... much better than where I am [05:00] I might actually try to move to NC [05:00] LOL, where you at? [05:00] Western NY [05:01] Huh, that is surprizing. I have a friend that runs a web hosting in NYC just to be on the east coast backbone [05:02] NYC is not Western NY [05:02] that is a few hundred miles from me [05:02] No I know. I'm from CT so... [05:02] and NYC drains the rest of the state of money [05:02] cool... [05:02] I just moved to NC a couple months ago [05:02] Are you out by Buffalo [05:03] I have a few friends down in NC and they are all very happy with the area... they are in the Chapel Hill area [05:03] Not Buffalo... Rochester [05:03] Yeah that's a really nice area of the state [05:03] Yeah... its nice... but it is going through some really tough economic times... [05:03] Ok got cha [05:04] the major companies are all suffering [05:04] I think everyone is [05:04] Kodak, Xerox, etc. [05:04] Well... some areas are more resistant too it [05:04] True [05:04] Syracuse lost its major employers in the 80s [05:04] Where do your friends work down here [05:04] Who was that? [05:04] so economic down turns seem to affect it less than Rochester [05:04] they work for the state [05:05] Syracuse Lost Carrier, GM, and Lockheed Martin [05:06] Sorry about that xchat crashed [05:07] Well it was good talking to you. Take care.
