alistairRecommendations for system tray notes manager?00:35
rayluI just installed Kubuntu as the second partition (first being Windows) but I'm still stuck with the old bootloader. Anyone want to stop me before I use grub-install?00:36
BluesKajold bootloader ?00:38
alistairraylu, be very careful when mucking around with the boot loader; last week I seemed to lose my windows partition and I have had 20 years experience with PC.00:38
mnOk, I am dual booting Win XP and Kubuntu 8.04.1 KDE 4. I downloaded the ndiswrapper (on XP because I have my drivers installed on it) and put it on a flash drive. I booted Kubuntu and extracted ndiswrapper. Then I went and read the file it gives about how to install it. I followed the directions word for word (except it didn't say make uninstall and make as root but I had to because I didn't...00:38
mn...have sufficient permission otherwise). However, on the make and make install parts I kept getting errors, but I kept going. When it got to the part to install the driver ("ndiswrapper -i driver.inf"), I was notified that ndiswrapper wasn't installed and I needed to apt-get it. Well, that won't work because the whole reason I need it is to connect to the internet (apt-get and surf and...00:38
mn...stuff). I can't figure out what the problem is. (BTW I also tried sudo apt-get while booted on the liveCD and logged-in on Kubuntu with the disk in the drive.) Any ideas?00:38

alistairraylu, if its working ok, then best leave it, but if you must you need to remove the grub by 'approved' methods one of which is to use your winxp boot/install disk and use the 'R' option then run fixmbr. As documented elsewhere00:40

osirisgonna try tovid again, but it has a history of being bugy on my various machines.02:21
BluesKajI had tovid working quite well ...it has a wiki site which gives an important dependency list and tutorial02:22
Zopiac1how to i add desktop effects?02:22
osiristhats probably where i'll end up.02:22
Zopiac1preferrably compiz, but not necessarily02:23
BluesKajosiris, i haven't used it nmuch since i bought a Tivo which sort of negates the need for a dvd setup02:23

shaffyif i have an AMD dual core x2, i should install the 64bit version of kubuntu, correct?04:09
BluesKajshaffy , not necessarily ...I run 32 bit no my AMD 64 bit 3200+ CPU04:10
BluesKajon04:11
shaffyBluesKaj: so what is the advantage/disadvantage?04:11
BluesKajthere are apps that won't run on 64 bit04:11
BluesKajyou can if you use ia3204:12
shaffyis there any performance difference?04:12
MidnightCommandoBluesKaj: that's nonsense i'm afraid04:12
MidnightCommandoshaffy: generally a 64-bit os on a 64-bit proc is faster.04:12
MidnightCommandoalso you can address more memory without the need for the HIGHMEM kernel patch and thus overhead.04:13
DragnslcrNot much04:13
BluesKajMidnightCommando, well you have your opinion, but my luck with 64 bit kubuntu's haven't been very good04:13
DragnslcrUnless you have (and use) more than 4 GB of memory, you probably won't notice a performance difference04:13
MidnightCommandoIf you still need access to 32-bit apps like flashplayer, you can easily use multilib setups, which in ubuntu are probably packages like "emul-linux-x86-compat"04:13
DragnslcrAnd incompatibility with apps can be a killer04:13
BluesKajhere comes the debate04:13
MidnightCommandoDragnslcr: I do ;)04:13
shaffylol.. i'm glad i started it :S04:14
MidnightCommandoBluesKaj: I'm not trying to turn it into a debate, sorry for saying it was nonsense, it's just I've never had any trouble with multilib04:14
BluesKajFirefox used to crash a lot04:14
MidnightCommando:|04:16
BluesKajmy setup is rather mediocre hardware wise but I never noticed any adavantage speedwise with 64 bit on either linux or windows04:16
BluesKajtheoretically it's supposed to be faster maybe , but can one really tell ?04:17

sountgunchrome wow! it's really cool! now i see the wonder that google made! o_O05:26
SixzeroThanks justyb.  I've got an odd onboard sound setup on my Shuttle box.  It's an SN68PTG6 Deluxe with HD Audio provided by Realtek.  There IS a driver on the Realtek site for linux, but I'm curious as to how to compile it.  I've tried sh install, considering that's the install script that came with the download, but I'm not sure if it's compiling correctly or what packages I would need to install in order to make it work.05:26
justybSixzero: Hmmm.05:27
justybSixzero: I'll have to make this ouick05:27
justybSixzero: Okay first try everything you can to get a binary driver05:28
justybSixzero: Compiling sucks and breaks everything05:28
justybSixzero: Unless you're the type to stay on top of your systems upgrades05:29
SixzeroThe downloaded package comes with a .tar within the tar.bz2 that's labled as the alsa driver, but it's got a ton of folders within.  Would I find the binary driver within it?05:29
justybSixzero: Which, as far as the kernel goes, you'll have to keep up with your own patches if you compile your own driver05:29
justybSixzero: It is possible you'd find a binary driver there.05:30

justybSixzero: Okay if you want to build a driver you will need kernel-sources and build05:32
SixzeroI have the sources, but I've tried building twice.  The first time it complained that it couldn't compile c++, so I downloaded a few packages from Synaptic and tried again.  I got farther, but I have no idea of what confirmation I would have that it finished successfully or not.05:34

Daisuke_IdoRurouniJones: the important bit about per-process tabs is...  say you're watching a youtube video on one tab, and have other things going on in other tabs.  flash takes a nosedive.  instead of taking the browser down, it just takes that tab.  this is a pretty useful concept.19:07

lupine_85right... you want the partition, not the entire disc, remember. some people do have an entire drive without a partition table, though, so *shrug*22:56
wesley_and how can i upgrade safe to 8.10 kubuntu without breaking the system ?22:56
lupine_85mkdir /path/to/directory22:57
lupine_85wesley_: wait until october. do the update.22:57
lupine_85;)22:57
bwv544acc, i remember unix with simply md ...........22:57
wesley_lupine_85 i know what i am doing i was using 8.04 also from alpha 522:58
lupine_85*shrug* then go for it22:58
bwv544but i want the entire disk !!!22:58
bwv544the procedure is not the same ?22:58
lupine_85but asking how to do a dist-upgrade doesn't *suggest* that you're used to doing this sort of thing22:58
wesley_i only ask if there´s a upgrade option because i dont have cd,s22:58
lupine_85bwv544: you have the physical disc, hde. this may, or may not, be separated into multiple partitions22:59
lupine_85which may be of any size22:59
lupine_85wesley_: it's just a normal dist-upgrade, with the caveat that anything could break at any time during or after22:59
wesley_lupine_85 i know that i can edit the sources list to 8.10 but that messed things up22:59
bwv544ok, using just hde i specify to use entire disk, right ?22:59
rain2sorry if this is the wrong question to ask here: anyone know who I should talk to if I am interested in impossible things like "remote empathy"?22:59
lupine_85bwv544: yep, and if that's not how the drive is partitioned (well, not partitioned, I guess), it won't work23:00
wesley_lupine_85 kubuntu devel isnt that worse23:00
=== root is now known as Guest37067
lupine_85ORLY? ;)23:00
stevan_is there a way to "lock" your mouse inside a window, for example - a game?23:00
* lupine_85 drums his fingers at the kubuntu image23:00
wesley_lupine_85 yes last time i used it was pretty useable23:00
lupine_85good for you23:01
bwv544acc, permission denied on mkdir ????? why ?23:01
stevan_I think there is a command to do this but I cant find it23:01
lupine_85last time I used an alpha, it broke my spine in three places23:01
lupine_85bwv544: try being root23:01
lupine_85or creating the directory somewhere you have permissions to do so23:01
lupine_85s/root/sudo/23:01
stevan_I jsut want to throw that flag at the end of my command to force the mouse to be locked in23:01
stevan_I tried some plugins but those have not worked out.23:02
bwv544which is the way to be root ? normally ask for passw .........23:02
lupine_85sudo <command>23:03
lupine_85humm, X11 just supports it - XGrabPointer(...confine_to=window...)23:04
lupine_85but is it exposed to the console anywhere?23:04
wesley_is there in 8.10 a kde4 version off konversation ?23:05
lupine_85not yet, I think23:05
lupine_85they're still working on porting it23:06
wesley_and kdenlive ?23:06
lupine_85not afaik23:08
lupine_85you can always build it from source, mind23:08
lupine_85in its current extremely rough state23:09
* lupine_85 is installing kubuntu because he vaguely wants kde4 and can't be bothered recompiling a kernel for a new motherboard he's putting in :D23:09
bwv544sudo mount -f /dev/hde /exraid1, how to check it ?23:09
bwv544have i to restart ?23:09
geniiGah. Work. AFK23:11
lupine_85erm23:13
rain2"remote empathy" could be useful though... you'd just have to ask a lot of butterflies to flap their wings... and a hurricane might change or if the butterflies were  not big enough you could simply ask some birds for a little help XD23:14
lupine_85-f pretends to mount the filesystem, but doesn't actually do it23:14
lupine_85now try doing it for real and then do mount -l to see if it's mounted23:14
lupine_85no need to reboot. Ever. Almost.23:14
* lupine_85 really needs to get into the swing of the kexec stuff23:15
numberihi, where can i ask about wine?23:16
lupine_85numberi: #winehq is good for really specific stuff23:18
lupine_85or, you know, here23:18
