scrubb2000if I run a script from /etc/init.d as a normal user, does it actually execute them?  I never see any output to the console when I try that...01:35
dr_willisscrubb2000,  normally those scripts are ran at boot or by root user. Not a normal user.01:35
dr_willissudo /etc/init.d/whateverscript01:36
geniidbglt: Yes01:37
scrubb2000dr_willis, if I do that, does it run the commands in the script as root?  Or does it only need sudo in order to start the script then run the commands as user?  The reason I'm asking is I've had problems starting pulseaudio as root--it botches the permissions on some cookie files and then pulseaudio won't run as a user after that.01:38
dr_willisscrubb2000,  services often change their  groups/id,   your use or the term 'running as a user' is vague. Most of those scripts start services that NEED to be ran as root.01:39
Schuenemannis it worth using this KDE wallet?01:39
dr_willisscrubb2000,  I dont mess with pulseaudio much. Ive not had any issues with it. Pulseaudio is differnt in that its a service, thats ran by the sytem, and  has client apps that the users run. SO its possible theres some issues between the 2.01:40
scrubb2000dr_willis, how can I tell what user/group a script is running things as?01:41
dr_willisscrubb2000,  not sure.. read the script perhaps. I imagine most of them run as root.01:42
dr_willisonly a few services run as their own user,  like the http, and  a few others.01:42
mefisto__Schuenemann: I find it annoying, but it's up to you I suppose01:43
dr_willistheres always the 'stop using pulse audio' option. :)01:43

Takeshi_Hykovaim upgrading from my matrox card to an nvidia 6200. Do I need to uninstall the current video drivers before installing the nvidia card?04:32
latI'm having trouble using tune2fs and e2label to set a label on my hard drives. I suspect it is because all my drives were originally formatted fo NTFS before I converted them to Ext3. The errors I am getting are: tune2fs: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/sda04:33
lat Couldn't find valid filesystem superblock.04:33

Gokee2_LaptopThe installer is only giving me the option for lilo and I kindof want grub cause thats what I have used for a long time now05:19

Gokee2_LaptopOk, thanks05:28
Takeshi_Hykovawow the nvida driver installation using envyng was flawless. GREAT! application05:28
dr_willisUntill ya get a kernel update.. and your X dont work.. then you wonder why....05:30
dr_willis:)05:30
dr_willisHad to explain that to my new-linux-using friend at work the other day05:30
Takeshi_Hykovathe envy site says the driver update by envy when the kernel is upadted is automatic!05:31
dr_willisin theory. :)05:32
dr_willisJust somthing to rember if you ever boot up and cant get X going..05:32
Takeshi_Hykovaeverything else the envy site told me was flawless i dont know why I would doubt them now05:33
dr_willisGiven the long and rather nasty history of envy. and how its classified as 'unsupported' - Buyer Beware.05:34
dr_willisDo whatever you want..   this is linux.05:35
ere4si+1 dr_willis05:35
Takeshi_Hykovaenvy is free05:35
dr_willisI never said it wasent free.. and the old envy. wasent exactly 'gpl' free. that was a major issue with it.05:36
Takeshi_Hykovabuyer beware?05:36
dr_willisJust a saying.. "use caution in what you do"05:36
dr_willis!envy05:37
ubottuenvyng is an updated version of the *UNSUPPORTED* envy package. It is now part of the ubuntu universe repository (envyng-gtk OR envyng-qt) we suggest you use envyng if every other (official/supported) method fails! it can have various results from works, to fails!!!  if you want the very latest drivers from the manufacturer you use them at your own risk05:37
Takeshi_HykovaI took my time researched alot of Linux, ubuntu, and Kubuntu forums ect..... made an informed decision on the path to folow did it and everything went exactly as described to me .05:38
dr_willisI have my system fully working without needing to use Envy at all.05:38
Takeshi_Hykovathats great im sure your a command line master05:39
dr_willisactually the first boot up, the hardware-manager driver asked if i wanted to install the nvidia drivers and i just checked the right box.05:40
Takeshi_Hykovaisnt that the restricted drivers?05:41
dr_willistheres a tool  that runs , and pops up a dialog asking about if you want to install the restricted drivers.. correct.05:42
dr_willisI forget what its name is now a days. it changed in the last release.05:42
Takeshi_Hykovaenvy also automatically updates the drivers when nvidia releases new ones.05:42
Takeshi_HykovaI wanterd the proprietary drivers05:43
dr_willisThe drivers in the repositories are the proprietary drivers, they are just not the 'cutting edge up to date versions'05:45
dr_willisthe 'nv' driver is the gpl 'free' driver, the 'nvidia' ones are proprieatary.05:45
Takeshi_Hykovawhy would i spend money on a high proformance graphics card then settler for old drivers05:46
dr_willisI dont care what you do...   do whatever you like. Just dont expect much support in here when envy breaks somthing.05:47
Takeshi_Hykovawhy would it be included by ubuntu in the universal repository if it has a reputation of breaking stuff?05:48
ere4siTakeshi_Hykova: lots of people use envyng - it's ok if it works :)05:48
dr_willis'if'  ia often a big if.05:48
Takeshi_Hykovayea i know im just wondering about these command line fanboys heheheheh05:48
dr_willisI dont see what the command line has to do with it at all...05:49
Takeshi_Hykovathey hate it if you didnt spend an hour in a command promopt05:49
Takeshi_Hykovalol05:49
ere4siit's more about the cleanup when things break...05:49
dr_willisthey do?05:49
dr_willisI find it more annoying when 'ubuntu' gets blamed for 'breaking' when users do... 'odd/weird/unsupported' things.05:50
dr_willisOf course if Nvidia/ati both got their act together - video driver support would not be a Top 10 'problem' with linux.05:50
Takeshi_Hykovaif envy is odd and unsupported why is it in the unviersal repository?05:51
Takeshi_Hykovaoh I forgot weird05:51
mixed1234can anyone recommend a laptop that I could use to DJ?  I plan on using the laptop to play back my library stored on an external HD05:51
dr_willisTakeshi_Hykova,  because people kept wanting it  its also 'envyng' they cleaned up the old envy i hear.05:52
dr_willistheres lots of 'unsupported' things in the repos.05:52
ere4simixed1234: audio playback is a low resource thing so any lappy would do it05:52
Takeshi_Hykovayep thats what i used and it worked flawlessly05:52
gx009the problem is choice .. so you become part of the problem along with choices05:52
dr_willisTakeshi_Hykova,  and as we have been saying. you are one of the 'lucky' ones.05:52
Takeshi_Hykovakool :) if you say so05:53
mixed1234ere4si, not any lappie would do, i would need one with a decent sound card, sturdy, etc. etc05:53
dr_williswhich is the core of all that we have been saying.  Envy could break on you.  dont expect help here if it does break.05:53
Takeshi_Hykovawell thank you for assuming the responsibilty of making that statment for everyone here :)05:54
ere4simixed1234: I here some folk have issues with intel hda sound - might be something to  look out for05:54
dr_willisYou are the one claiming envy works 'perfectly' when in fact for a great many people it does not.05:55
Takeshi_Hykovaso you say05:55
dr_willisUse what you want.  we dont care.05:55
ere4siTakeshi_Hykova: it comes with an uninstall option for a reason05:55
Takeshi_Hykovawe?05:55
dr_willisraise of hands of anyone that actually cares?05:55

dr_willisNormally it comes out the same day as ubuntu.06:00

dr_willisMy new laptop has 64bit windows - I will admit - ive not seen many issues with 32/64bit on it.. Other then a few apps that wont run.   And i forget what those even were.. some little  utilities.06:13

stdinI've been running KDE4 as my primary desktop since early betas06:19

dr_willisSchuenemann,  just do NOT ask where the N went in 'umount'06:27
stdinas long as you only user standard C and standard C++ stuff, it'll work anywhere06:28
SchuenemannI have asked myself that a few times06:28
stdins/user/use/06:28
Schuenemannand also why there isn't a rename command06:28
freaky[t]stdin: yea but i can't write makefiles ... :( and it's not in the book i have - Accelerated C++06:28
stdinSchuenemann: erm, mv = move ;)06:28
Schuenemannyeah, but use move to rename? strange, huh?06:28
stdinfreaky[t]: you think Makefiles are hard, autoconf is insane06:28
freaky[t]stdin: they only teach you how to do seperate compilation, but if you do it that way, theres still missing the makefile part06:28
dr_willisrename can also rename06:28
stdinSchuenemann: what do you think happens when you rename? ;)06:29
dr_willismv moves the file to a new name...06:29
Schuenemanndr_willis, this rename is newto move06:29
stdinSchuenemann: if you want, add as alias to your ~/.bashrc "alias rename=mv"06:29

dr_willisSchuenemann,  when i learned programming gotos were required to get things done.. and 4K was a lot of Ram!06:32
Schuenemanndr_willis, me too. I had a MSX06:32
Schuenemannwell, I think I still have it06:32
dr_willisI got a TimexSinclare Hanging on the wall right above my Big PC's06:32
stdinfreaky[t]: you need a make system, I'd suggest you learn about CMake, it works on Linux, Windows, Mac OS X and a few other places and is quite easy to learn. it'll make create the Makefile on demand for whatever system it's on06:32
stdinyou can usually configure an application in a few lines06:32
freaky[t]stdin: ok that's great where can i learn about it?06:33
freaky[t]should i just google it or do you have any special docs?06:33
stdinhttp://www.cmake.org/06:33
dr_willisSchuenemann,  been 'tutoring' a guy at work. hes taking some  'beginner' programing logic class. they are not even using a 'real' language. just some 'psuedo code' thats almost basic.  So i gave the guy a copy of FreeBasic and a Freebasic IDE to play with.06:33
freaky[t]thank you06:33
stdincmake is also in the repos06:33
freaky[t]im insstalling it right now ;D06:34
smokingplatypushey guys06:34
Schuenemanndr_willis, can't deny it's a simple language. Like pascal06:34
stdinhttp://www.cmake.org/cmake/help/documentation.html has some docs (ignore the Mastering CMake link, unless you want to buy a book)06:34
dr_willisSchuenemann,  i guess the guys next class they get to learn real 'visual basic' :)06:35
dr_willisWonder how much MS is bribeing them for that.06:35
Schuenemanndr_willis, Visual Basic is cool. You type "on error resume next" and all the errors are gone like magic!06:35
dr_willisI will stick with REXX ! :)06:36
freaky[t]stdin: ok thank you :D06:36
Schuenemanndoes anyone know which xmms package has a front end?06:37
stdin!xmms06:37
ubottuxmms is no longer being developed, see http://bugs.debian.org/461309 for more details.  Consider using audacious, bmpx, or xmms2, bmpx, or xmms2 instead.06:37
dr_willisSchuenemann,  xmms2 uses front ends I thought.06:37
dr_willisxmms is its own stand alone thing.06:38
SchuenemannI installed that xmms2 and there's no front end06:38
dr_willisSchuenemann,  check the packag mnager for xmms2 front ends? theres several last i looked.06:38
dr_willisNot that i could get them to do anything.. :)06:38
wuznookay, so I'm a noob to linux, but I'm fairly adept with MS (who isn't these days) but I want to try and give linux a try I've tinkered with it before and I'm contemplating doing a dual boot with kubuntu, is this a fairly straight forward procedure?06:39
Schuenemannheh06:39
dr_willisxmms2 was overkill for my needs. I tend to use bmpx06:39
dr_williswuzno,  yes. very straight forward06:39
Schuenemanndr_willis, I always using xmms because I thought amarok was overkill for me06:39
wuznoawesome thanks dr_willis06:39
dr_williswuzno,   the installer normally installs the grub menu/boot loader. to let you pick what os to boot.06:39
dr_williswuzno,  or if you just want to toy ith the distros you could use virtualbox, or vmware, to install inside a virtual machine. - or use wubi (not reccomended) :)06:40
dr_willisIm installing Ubuntu8.10 inside virtualbox right now as we speak.06:41
wuznohrmm that all sounds fin an dandy but im not that skilled with virtual machine usage06:41
Schuenemannwuzno, if you boot kubuntu's cd you can take a look before installing06:41
dr_williswuzno,  thats why virtualbox has documentation06:42
dr_willislive cd's are handy also. :)06:42
Schuenemannyeah06:42
Schuenemannthey're the best invention since the wheel06:42
wuznoI'll def, give the live cd a look; but what's the best place to read up on virtualbox (or the easiest virtual machine)06:42
dr_willisVirtualbox is also great to test out Live cd iso files in.. befor you burn to disk.06:43
dr_willisvirtualbox has a homepage.06:43
dr_willishttp://www.virtualbox.org/06:43

dr_willisI wouldent touch anything by MS. :)06:43

dr_willisVirtualbox and Vmware are both  raceing each other and adding more features all the time/improvements...  I havent heard much about MS virtual stuff in ages06:44
Schuenemannages? I only heard about it recently. I thought it was something new06:44
* Schuenemann installing bmpx06:45
dr_willisSchuenemann,  they redid their priceing/licenseing I think not too long ago. to keep up with vmware/virtualbox06:45
Schuenemannhmmm06:45
dr_willisBut given the useability of vmware and virtualbox. I dont plan on trying MS virtualpc anytime soon.06:45

wuznohow do i maximize the kubuntu screeen in vbox? i've maxed vbox, but kubuntu is still only a small portion on vbox07:04
dr_willisFull Screen virtualbox. then you must configure the proper res inside the os IN virtualbox07:04
=== angelo is now known as angelo_

dr_williswhen a user logs in? there is the kde Autostart directory IF they login to kde08:32
dr_willis!autostart08:32
ubottuTo make programs autostart with your KDE session, you can make a link to it in ~/.kde/Autostart. The package 'kcontrol-autostart' makes a kcontrol item for handling items in that directory. For a complete guide, see http://jucato.org/kde/kde-autostart.html08:32
scrubb2000yeah yeah, I know, but that only works for me.08:33
scrubb2000I mean it only works for my account.08:33
scrubb2000I was hoping for an Autostart folder that's account independent.08:34
ActionParsnipscrubb2000: ~/.kde/Audorun or ~/.kde4/share/autorun08:34
scrubb2000Maybe even KDE independent.08:34
ActionParsnipautostart, gah!08:34
dr_willisaccount independant - is not going to work for specifi users.. thats 'system wide' :)08:34
dr_willisrc.local is normally used to run system wide startup things.. but thats befor X starts08:35
dr_willistheres also that rc.X dirctrory that has X specific scripts.08:35
scrubb2000Yeah.08:35
dr_willisit all depends on exactly what you are trying to run08:35
scrubb2000I'm still futzing with pulseaudio. =)08:35
dr_willisI never seem to have issues with audio....08:36

dr_willisHmm.. kde dosent use pulse audio - i thought08:36
ActionParsnipdr_willis: me neither. i shop smart08:36
scrubb2000It works fine, it's just the startup part I'm playing with.08:36

scrubb2000Let's just say I'm in "tinkerer" mode right now. =D08:40

scrubb2000er ARGBGLX08:47
scrubb2000That's fun to read out loud. ;D08:47

jussi01Freddy2: no need to do that10:16
jussi01they are just frontends to apt10:17
ere4si!apt10:17
ubottuAPT is the Advanced Package Tool, which together with dpkg forms the basic Ubuntu package management toolkit. Short apt-get manual: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AptGetHowto - Also see !Synaptic (Gnome) or !Adept (KDE)10:17
Freddy2jussi01: so apt is the one that checks for updates periodically, and then calls the update manager to show changes when they happen? is this the way it works?10:23
jussi01Freddy2: the options are part of apt. adept and synaptic are just preety "faces" to the backent. so yeah, you are correct10:24

stdinyou don't really need -R when you use "*"10:49

stdinyou need -R to copy recursively, or "/*" to copy all the files in a dir, that's the way cp works10:52

dr_willisYou can 'sudo' to root.11:50
dr_willisand run whatever theme setting tool is used to set gtk/gnome themes.. (i dont know the name of the tool)11:51

Schuenemanndr_willis, if I get the xmms debian package, does it work in any debian-based (like ubuntu) ?16:09

LeeJunFanxmms debian packages may have dependancies that aren't offered on ubuntu, you can try and see if it installs. Mixing debian/ubuntu can be tricky - but as long as it's an application and not libraries the risk is fairly low.16:12
dr_willisa quick google shows me that thers some xmms packages on the  Launchpad repositories16:13

what_ifshould I install kubuntu with kde3 or the kde4 remix? Is kde 4 ready for every day use ?22:37
coreymon77what_if: depends what you want22:38
Cole_Chamberi actually have a serious question22:38
JampiterIsn't Intrepid gonna be 4 only?22:38
what_ifcoreymon77: I want kde 4 but not if it is unstable22:38
JampiterKDE4 > KDE322:38
coreymon77what_if: cutting edge but still some bugs=kde4, absolute rock solid stability=kde 322:38
Freddy2feature-missing=kde422:39
what_ifcoreymon77: I can install kde3 and kde4 on the same system... right? just switch to kde3 if stability is a problem22:39
Rioting_pacifistwhat_if: last time i checkes (a while ago) the kde4 on 8.04 wasnt great, 8.10 will probably ship with alot of kde4 apps but still use kde3 to fill gaps22:39
coreymon77what_if: not if you install the remix22:39
Rioting_pacifistboth use the same package manager, why cant you install kde3 from kde4?22:40
coreymon77what_if: my suggestion is to install the kde 3 one and then try kde4 from there22:40
what_ifcoreymon77: so... install the "regular" kde version then I can apt-get kde4 and still have kde3? If I understand correctly...22:40
coreymon77Rioting_pacifist: the remix makes it much harder to use alongside eachother22:40
coreymon77what_if: yes, for now22:40

what_ifDarkrift2: really? what was the problem(s) you had ?22:42

Darkrift2left me having to login via command line and "startx" to start kde3 after i uninstalled kde422:43
Darkrift2now i dont mind, id rather command line login, but that wasnt the desired effet22:43
Darkrift2then all my kde apps were replaced by kde4 apps, and i cant get them to reinstall correctly and the kde4 versions dont work properly in kde322:44
what_ifDarkrift2: hmmm, that would not be fun. you installed the "normal" version of 8.04 kubuntu then installed kde4... right ?22:44
Darkrift2yes22:44
Darkrift2it worked great for a few hours22:44
what_ifDarkrift2: lol22:44
Darkrift2then i chnged some settings for my taskbar etc, and it locked up, had to reboot and kdm kept failing22:44
Darkrift2so i tried to reinstall kdm after removing kde4 and it kept failing, so i just removed it from auto start22:45
Darkrift2some ppl told me not to do it, but i wanted to try it anyways, but not be limited to it22:45

Darkrift2id recommend you try kde4 using a live cd, then when you are ready for it, install the kde4 version of kubuntu22:46

Colonel_PanicLeeJunFan: What should I be looking for in this output from dmesg?23:31
ubottuHi! I'm #kubuntu's favorite infobot, you can search my brain yourself at http://tinyurl.com/5zfb6t - Usage info: http://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuBots23:31
LeeJunFanColonel_Panic: something similar to usb 4-2: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 11 - you can run this "dmesg | grep usb" to filter your results to those containing USB events.23:33
LeeJunFanCarla1989: you can boot with an install CD. If your HD is dead you won't be able to boot with that no matter what OS you use.23:33
Carla1989LeeJunFan: It's saying "Insert System Disk in Drive. Press any key when ready" at the boot up. So I am assuming that the HD has gone bad.23:36
Carla1989LeeJunFan: Does that mean I must find a working HD for my laptop first, before attempting an kubuntu installation.23:37
Colonel_PanicHmmm... I just did ps -u root and I don't see dbusd running23:37
LeeJunFanCarla1989: could be a number of things though. Check your cables, power, IDE or SATA. If you've been in your BIOS settings lately make sure those didn't get changed to disable the HD.23:37
Colonel_Panicthere's something else in there, called "ksuspend_usbd". What is that?23:38
Carla1989LeeJunFan: I'll check it now.23:38
Colonel_PanicWhy would dbus not be running?23:38
LeeJunFanCarla1989: might also be that the bootsector got corrupted and just need to re-install grub.23:38
LeeJunFanColonel_Panic: dunno, might be worth looking in /var/log/syslog for clues on that.23:39
LeeJunFanColonel_Panic: or try starting it now and see if it errors anywhere. sudo /etc/init.d/dbus start23:40
Carla1989LeeJunFan: How do I do that? I don't have a floppy drive in my laptop so I can't possibly try booting from a recovery disk.23:40

LeeJunFanColonel_Panic: I don't see anything useful in there, just NetworkManager trying to use dbus.23:48
Colonel_PanicMy /var/log/syslog: http://pastebin.ca/120214623:48
LeeJunFanCarla1989: those are to re-install the linux bootloader. If your HD actually works then you can install kubuntu and you wont' need to worry about following those steps.23:49
LeeJunFanCarla1989: Try to install and see what happens I guess, since it's a laptop there probably aren't any cables actually, so it's more likely the HD is actually dead if you can't install kubuntu to it.23:49
Carla1989LeeJunFan: Okie, so my objective is to re-install the linux bootloader.23:49
RiotingPacifistthat worked thx LeeJunFan.23:50
LeeJunFanCarla1989: if only XP was ever on that drive then there's no re-installing to do. Just try to install kubuntu as normal, if the HD works then it'll just be a normal install.23:50
