vanberge_anybody a dhcp guru?  wondering why my server dishes out IPs starting at the end of the subnet.  i'd like it to start at the begining02:39
bytor4232vanberge_: Wow.  I never really noticed that.  I think mine get dished out at random.02:47
vanberge_is there any way to specify that?02:48
vanberge_like i assigned a scope of 192.168.1.10-192.168.1.25002:48
vanberge_and they start at 250, then 249, then 24802:48
bytor4232Hm.02:58
bytor4232Not sure.02:58
bytor4232Actually, I should say, I'm not sure there is an option for that.02:58
youbuntu2008I tried to start with GTK+ in ubuntu. I worked out to get those things successfully compiled (now in Day #2), but still to no avail. Got stuck at compile GLib, due to iconv or libiconv stuff. How to internationalize it? (Hopefully I'm not 'on my own'... is there any other way to get started with GUI programming?)03:35
youbuntu2008perhaps, the more accurate question is: How to ENABLE just-compiled libiconv ? (so that i may successfulyl fompile GLib)03:40
ScottK-laptopyoubuntu2008: Note that you are in a server oriented channel.  That seems an odd place to be asking about GUI programming.03:49
youbuntu2008ops... yes, u r right. At times, got lost in several things at same time :))03:50
youbuntu2008actually, not 'gui prog' per-se, but more on 'getting those packages to work'03:51
ScottK-laptopOK, well once you said GTK you had not a hope of being on topic.03:52
youbuntu2008thanks.03:55
prexium01Hey all.06:41
prexium01Anyone know why my server won't boot to a CD after it's already found it?06:41
remotemaybe the bios is not configured to boot from the cd or another device that can boot is priorized over your cd-rom drive06:43
prexium01I have it set to CD rom boot06:44
prexium01Like, it says it found the CD and that it's bootable, then it just skips the boot step06:44
prexium01Nvm, got it.06:47
prexium01Anyone know why my sever freezes when I start to configure the logical drives in the BIOS?06:59
prexium01108 people in here and no one knows?07:01

R-edemptionHello, all. I am having some issues with BIND on a Ubuntu 8.04 server. It continues to fail to start up. After looking in /var/log/daemon.log, it seems as if Bind9 is complaining that it does not have enough permissions to read /etc/named.conf, which is completely untrue as we have tested the permissions and it can read it just fine.08:06
Kamping_KaiserR-edemption, guess two things to check - run named's config file checker, and perhaps that aa-* thing08:09
R-edemptionKamping_Kaiser: Thankyou. I will try that now.08:09
R-edemptionIncase it makes a difference, this is a clean ubuntu 8.04 install that just had Plesk control panel installed.08:14
R-edemptionKamping_Kaiser: Nothing really helped with those tools.08:16
habitHello. Is it possible to install ubuntu as a desktop and transform it to server?09:09
lukehasnonameyou'd have to manually change the kernel09:24
lukehasnonamebut all the packages are there09:24
lukehasnonamefrankly, it'd be easier to grab a server iso and install that.09:25
ghaleb_hello, I have configured my DHCP server to give fixed-address according to the mac address, but till now, I'm still looking on how to specify the gateway for that address. any help ?10:05
rafiki_Hello, I just want to know if a server install is suppose to work with sound or not usually ? I notice there is a specific flavor of the kernel.11:23
Kamping_Kaiserghaleb, what dhcpd?11:46
Andy_hi, Im installing 8.04 server on a computer that doesn't have a cd-rom.....I'm booting from a USB-stick but I'm failing at the detect cd-rom step14:17
Andy_I'm asked to point out where my cd-rom is...../dev/xxx....can I point to my USB-stick here?14:18
vadi2Can anyone please help me sort out a rewrite rule? It's being overzealous. In one of my wordpress installations I wanted to have a custom url structure, and it told me to put this rule in .htaccess: http://pastebin.com/m79460e76. However now all pages that should give a 404 are caught by that rule and redirected...15:48

ivoksit really depends on what you are looking for20:34
rgotteni am building a server for my office, and would like the following, on one hand an external hard drive conected to the server for dayly, weekely and montly back up, in a way that if a crash happens, i can do a restore and up and running. At the same time i would like to do remote incremental backups from the office server to my home for data only20:36
Deeps!backup20:38
ubottuThere are many ways to back your system up. Here's a few: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BackupYourSystem , https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DuplicityBackupHowto , https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HomeUserBackup , https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MondoMindi - See also !sbackup and !cloning20:38
* delcoyote hi20:41
rgotteni know you do not support webmin, but i have the server on a closet, and that is why i am using webmin to manage the server, can you please advise another good way of managing the server, remotly?20:42
Deeps!ebox | rgotten20:42
ubotturgotten: ebox is a web-based GUI interface for administering a server. It is designed to work with Ubuntu/Debian style configuration management. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/eBox20:42
Deepsor better yet, start playing with the command line more, learning how that works and using that instead20:43
rgottenI try ebox when it started a few month ago and lack many features of webmin20:48

SpaceBassone more question - I'm running server edition but with xbuntu-desktop install ... how can I change the run level so it does not start X21:39
SpaceBasseverything I've read suggests that changing the run level in ubuntu doesn't effect the GUI enviroment21:40
ivoksubuntu doesn't have gui runlevel21:41
ivoksdisplay manager is started from any runlevel, except 0, 1 and 621:41

afiefis it possible to install Ubuntu remotely?21:50
SpaceBassafief, on what hardware?22:01
afiefSpaceBass, an intel xeon machine22:02
SpaceBassafief, you'd have to get the media (CD) there somehow... but you should be able to redirect the output22:03
SpaceBassnot sure though22:03
afiefSpaceBass, yup got the media in there, but the guy who was supposed to install the machine knows nothing about partitioning, so I was wondering if I could to it remotely(as opposed to driving to the datacenter tomorrow morning)22:04
