snaphappihi all, I'm working on this problem with my ubuntu 8.04.1 ltsp install. it's the "ipconfig: eth0: SIOCGIFINDEX: No such device"  bug, with the Marvell/Sky2 eth controller.  if I put in a 2nd Realtek PCI eth controller, the client boots fine. but I can't get the client to PXEboot from the Realtek. can anyone here help?00:17
snaphappi<ogra> responseded: snaphappi, might be that the sky2 module is missing from initramfs's netboot code00:17

snaphappianyone here who can help me with ltsp client boot?01:56
RickZillaOk, just so I get this straight...d/l ubuntu, install it, then d/l the edubuntu addition and install that.  Do I understand that correctly?03:56
sbalneavEvening all04:54
RickZillaHey sbalneav05:07
sbalneavHello RickZilla05:16
RickZillaare you an edubuntu user?05:16
sbalneavI'm a user and developer.05:16
RickZillaJust started using ubuntu this week, I'd like to see what edubuntu is all about05:18
sbalneavIt's a collection of education applications in addition to all the regular great stuff in Ubuntu.05:20
sbalneavPlus, thin client computing.  That's the bit I work on.05:20
RickZillaI'd like to see what our licensing budget is for this year...it'd be nice if our district could save some bucks on that by switching to open source05:21
sbalneavHard to beat free :)05:23
RickZillaYep...I've been using GIMP and Wordpress for quite a while, I would consider those high quality software05:24
RickZillaAre you an educator as well?05:25
sbalneavNo, I'm a systems administrator for Legal Aid Manitoba05:27
sbalneavBut I've been involved with Linux for years and years05:27
RickZillaThat would be a cool gig...I've decided in my next life I'd like to be an educational technology specialist :-)05:29

sbalneavMorning all15:26
LaserJockogra: looks like I managed to get edubuntu-addon-meta using seeds correctly16:39
* ogra applauds16:39
LaserJockogra: I added .desktop file for edubuntu-addon-{kde,youth,science} as well16:40
LaserJockso in the installer they show up in the "Edubuntu desktop" category, just to give people a GUI option for getting those16:40
ogracool16:40
LaserJockused your popcon grabber to add popcon data in16:41
ograheh16:41
ograpopcon is so moot :)16:41
LaserJockso with that, rasmol, denemo, kverbos, kvoctrain, and keduca are gone16:42
LaserJockand marble, parley, step, and kalgebra are in16:42
ogragreat16:42
LaserJockI'm not going to be on IRC much as I really am hitting deadlines with my PhD16:43
sbalneavYou won't be around tomorrow, then?16:43
LaserJockbut I have a couple more tweaks to do to get the meta packages the way I want them16:43
LaserJocksbalneav: I'm gonna try to pop in but at this point I'm not sure how long I'll be around16:43
LaserJocksbalneav: but I should be fairly responsive to email (including some bugmail)16:43
* ogra is travelling tomorrom16:43
sbalneavLaserJock: No problem, I'll handle things tomorrow.16:44
sbalneavLaserJock: Can you change the title of the irc?16:45
sbalneavIt would be helpful if you could just pop in for 2 seconds and note that it's triage day.16:45
LaserJockfor the metapackages what I have left are 1) use Recommends for edubuntu-desktop 2) make sure the addon-installer menu is good (missing icons and menu items in the wrong place)  and 3) make sure the KDE apps have everything they need to run properly in Gnome16:45

ubottuHi! I'm #edubuntu's favorite infobot, you can search my brain yourself at http://tinyurl.com/5zfb6t - Usage info: http://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuBots17:05
Fritz87hi17:05
ograsbalneav, btw, feature freeze is over, fixes need to go into the packaging or we need exceptions17:08
sbalneavok17:10
sbalneavMichiel__: Hello17:10
Michiel__sbalneav: hello17:10
sbalneavFritz87: hello17:10
Michiel__I am eghie by the way17:10
Michiel__my eghie is a ghost for now17:10
Michiel__client crash and stuff ;)17:10
Fritz87I am writing a proposal for a course I'm taking that I plan on presenting at my work (I work for the tech department of a local school district)17:12
Fritz87and was wondering if there are any alternatives to linux terminal service project for lets say, an entire huge school district17:13
Fritz87because from what i've seen so far from people I've spoken with there is lots of room for improvement17:13
Michiel__LTSP and DRBL and Nomachine NX are 3 I know17:13
Fritz87thanks I'll check those out17:14
Michiel__although, you need to build a distro around Nomachine NX17:14
ograyeh, thats only a single app17:14
Michiel__but you can use the LTSP client distro to intergrate Nomachine NX client for example17:14
ograand DRBL isnt installable side by side with LTSP ...17:15
ograafaik17:15
=== Michiel__ is now known as Eghie
ograit isnt integrated with the distro as deep as LTSP is17:15
Eghieogra: with distro you mean the client or the server?17:16
ogra??17:17
ograubuntu17:17
Eghiebecause, LTSP isn't that far intergrated in the server distro, I guess17:17
Eghieit's portable17:17
ograsure17:17
ograno17:17
EghieLTSP not portable?17:17
ograltsp4 was17:17
ograltsp5 isnt by design17:17
ograthe client is built using the servers tools17:18
Eghiehmm, yeah, that is true17:18
ograunless you run suse that somewhat voilates all policies we have made for ltsp517:18
ograthey have a fixed image that gets installed as package afaik17:19
Eghieok17:19
ograwhich is somewhat like going back to ltsp 4.x17:19
Eghieyeah, that's correct17:19
EghieI see what you mean17:20
=== calimer-- is now known as calimer
Fritz87what are the current problems with LTSP? People tell me its less than ideal on a very large scale, but I havent really found anything suggesting that17:22
EghieFritz87: LTSP is often used with Gnome17:24
Eghieand Gnome has some process which have a habit to stay running after the user logs off17:24
Fritz87ahhh I see17:24
Fritz87are people working on a solution for that?17:25
Eghiebut using another Window Manager will solve that problem17:25
Fritz87oh okay17:25
ograor just adding some script bits17:25
Fritz87so if you installed the edubuntu packages to kubuntu, that would work?17:25
Eghiefor example yes17:25
ograwell, you need edubuntu-kde for that17:25
Eghiealthough there will be running some gnome processes maybe17:25
Fritz87ah i see17:25
ograthe normal edubuntu-desktop depends on ubuntu-desktop17:26
Eghiesee the bottom of this page for example: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingLTSP17:26
Eghiei'm going for some diner i guess17:26
Eghielater17:26
Fritz87cya17:27
Fritz87and thanks for the link17:27
Fritz87i cant wait to finish this proposal, im writing 217:27
Fritz87one for the school district which is unlikely to succede, and the other targeted at a specific teacher that gets fudniing to experiment with this kind of stuff17:27
ograFritz87, for large deployments you should talk to stgraber btw17:27
ograhe works on clustering support for multiple ltsp servers17:27
Fritz87thanks I will17:28
Fritz87looks like I have a lot of  research to do, I'm not very qualified for the job, but its something i really care about, you know what i mean?17:31
Fritz87open source schools17:31
LaserJockFritz87: gotta start somewhere, regarding being "qualified" :-)17:33
Fritz87yeah =)17:34
Fritz87I'm just a part time summer employee for the tech department in the school district in question while I'm going to school for an economics degree17:34
LaserJocknice17:35
Fritz87I might even get to write a paper for credit and get support from the rutgers writing program17:35
Fritz87so I think i really have a shot at making a difference if things work out17:36
Fritz87writing a proposal and making a powerpoint presentation for the tech department, at least thats the plan17:37
Fritz87and plan b is this classroom of the future program17:38
Nubaegnome-watchdog does a good job at analysing misbehaving processes and killing them18:17
wannehi, sry but I cant see in the download section (edubuntu.org) wich cds i have to download in order to get a thin client? for terminal server ubuntu alternate + add on, right?19:59
sbalneavwanne: Yes20:10
wannethx, cu20:24
* Lns thinks we might be on the verge of figuring out the Firefox 3.x / LTSP bug21:30
Lnshttps://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=453704#c821:30
ubottuMozilla bug 453704 in General "Extreme slowness, "Firefox is already running" error for >3 users launching Firefox in LTSP environment" [Critical,Unconfirmed]21:30
EghieLns: thanks for the nice debugging :) that should help21:33
LnsEghie: yw =) My pleasure. FYI I'm in irc.mozilla.org/#firefox w/mzz right now trying to nail it21:34
Eghiewill monitor it21:35
