davmor2cjwatson: on netboot mini.iso why is there just a blank screen with boot:  and no info and then the next page displays stuff?#14:03
cjwatsondavmor2: netboot doesn't have gfxboot, so it's the old-style syslinux prompt14:28
cjwatsoniz normal14:28
davmor2cjwatson: That's cool then it's just the next page looks remarkably like the gfxboot which is what was throwing me :)14:29
cjwatsonoh, hmm, there is some kind of bug there14:30
cjwatsonit's not gfxboot, but it is supposed to proceed directly to that next page14:30
cjwatsonbug on debian-installer please?14:30
davmor2cjwatson: np's14:30
cjwatsonsorry, had to look at it before I realised what you meant14:30
davmor2no worries :)14:35
davmor2cjwatson: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/debian-installer/+bug/271355 is that okay for you14:45
cjwatsonthat's fine, thanks14:47
davmor2np's14:47
cjwatsonedited the title slightly14:47
persiacjwatson: I was tracking down issues with the lpia alternate installer today, and noticed that the platform.intrepid seeds had no mention of lpia at all.  Would adding that be considered too invasive for intrepid, or is it something worth pursuing?  I have a branch, but it doesn't work due to some kernel issues.  Clearly, this would be post-Alpha.15:24
=== cr3_ is now known as cr3
davmor2cjwatson: no usplash on edubuntu at all :-/15:38
davmor2cjwatson: just checked edubuntu-artwark-usplash is installed15:43
davmor2https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/usplash/+bug/27137615:46
cjwatsonpersia: should be fine for intrepid; I'm happy to look at a branch16:07
persiacjwatson: lp:~persia/ubuntu-seeds/platform.intrepid : it waits on resolution of linux-meta for lpia, but that ought be sorted within 24 hours.16:08
persiaOnce I get the kernel all sorted, I'll open a branch merge request, if the contents appear acceptable.16:09
davmor2cjwatson: build on kubuntu 17.3 manifest date still reads differently to the rest :(16:16
davmor217.4 even16:16
cjwatson"reads differently"?16:16
davmor2cjwatson: does it still have 17.1's info on the cdimages server?  http://people.ubuntu.com/~ubuntu-archive/livefs-build-logs/intrepid/kubuntu/latest/livecd-20080917.1-i386.out still lists errors on build but is 17.1 not 17.416:20

bdmurrayI'm testing the alternate installer (entire disk w/ encryption) and was asked if I wanted an encrypted private directory.16:39
bdmurrayIs that redundant at all?16:40
persiabdmurray: That's for extra encryption :)  It does encryption two different ways, so compromise of the disk PW doesn't compromise the private directory.16:40
persia(and maybe it's redundant)  kirkland?  ^^16:40
bdmurraypersia: I realize its different but wasn't sure if it made sense.16:41
kirklandbdmurray: i use both LVM and Encrypted Private16:41
kirklandbdmurray: here's why.....16:41
kirklandbdmurray: encrypted LVM happens to the whole disk16:41
bdmurraybecause you are paranoid?16:41
kirklandbdmurray: that too :-)16:42
kirklandbdmurray: the LVM is encrypted with a single key for the whole system16:42
kirklandbdmurray: however, with Encrypted Private, each user on the system will have a different key for their encrypted Private dir16:42
kirklandbdmurray: and furthermore, you can incremently rsync the encrypted data in ~/.Private to offsite storage16:43
kirklandbdmurray: you can't do that with the underlying encrypted LVM block device16:43
kirklandbdmurray: does that help?16:43
kirklandpersia: thanks for the alerty16:44
bdmurraykirkland: yes, it just seemed like a very small group of people that would want that but it *is* the alternate installer16:44
kirklandbdmurray: alternative lifestyles ;-)16:44
persiakirkland: No problem.  I thought you'd be the best person to explain it :)16:44
kirklandpersia: cheers16:44
persiaAnd actually, you can do it with underlying encrypted LVM partitions, but pam_mount is *exceedingly* painful to use as currently implemente.16:45
=== superm1|away is now known as superm1
kirklandpersia: yeah, i grew very, very aggravated with pam_mount16:56
cjwatsondavmor2: I think Riddell is working on that16:57
cjwatsondavmor2: cf. #ubuntu-devel scrollback16:57
persiakirkland: Indeed.  I like the idea, but the way it works is just frustrating.  I'm very much looking forward to an alternate means of encrypting home directories (and .Private isn't quite enough for me: I'd rather deal with pam_mount)16:57
persiaAnyway: probably off-topic for -installer :)16:58
davmor2cjwatson: cool :)16:58
cjwatsonpersia: that diff looks mostly fine to me. Do you really need gptsync-udeb?17:05
persiacjwatson: I'm not sure.  Depends on what sort of hardware is implemented using those chips.  To date it's been mostly small stuff, but I'd not be surprised if someone implemented an EFI-based solution.17:06
persiaAlso, please don't apply it now: it will break because there is no linux-lpia package.17:06
cjwatsonwhat will it break? missing items in seeds are generally ignored17:07
persiaOh.  I thought it would break the image builds.  If missing items are ignored, then it can be merged now.17:07
cjwatsonmissing items in *metapackages*, not so much, but there's no metapackage for boot and the seed->metapackage translator checks existence anyway17:08
cjwatsonok, I'll merge it now then17:08
cjwatsondone17:08
persiaThank you.17:08
persiaIf you have time, I have another couple questions about seeds?  Also, would this be the appropriate forum?17:09
cjwatson#ubuntu-devel might benefit from the experience17:10
cjwatsonbut this is fine if you want more quietude :)17:10
bdmurrayI'm was trying to install the kubuntu alternate iso and it failed due to an unmet dep for landscape-client and landscape-common17:16
bdmurrayit was the 20080917.1 image17:17
cjwatsonknown, see #ubuntu-devel; Riddell and slangasek were sorting that out17:17
bdmurrayokay, thanks I'll try the newer one17:17
cjwatson.2 looks fixed17:17
xivulonevand can you please check the umenu version on CD?21:18
davmor2https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/271467  Bad news guys21:25
davmor2good news is that oem install worked :)21:25
xivulonevand we still have the old version (8.04 in the CD) that will fail to recognize the CD, umenu should be rev 3221:29
evandnoted, I'll fix that for the next CD build21:30
xivulonI'll assign 271467 to you then21:32

davmor2evand: is this a known bug http://www.davmor2.co.uk/install1.png21:38
superm1neat! i didn't realize Ubuntu installs were getting so small these days that they actually "gave" you space :)21:40
davmor2superm1: yes it's a special for mobile devices that have small ssd drives to give you max space :D21:42
evanddavmor2: no, it's not known.  Can you please file a bug and attach that screenshot?  Thanks!21:43

evandCan you please attach logs (/var/log/installer/debug, /var/log/syslog, and /var/log/partman) to that report21:54
davmor2I did a entire disc install on the next on I'll do an auto resize and take the log from that if that is okay?21:56
evandprovided it gives you the same UI glitch, yes21:57
davmor2evand: gives it every time without fail :)22:00
evanduh, good? ;)22:01
davmor2evand: the ui goes a bit loopy too when you select entire disc but I'll throw that on my server and see if it needs a separate bug22:03
evandok22:04
davmor2brb22:07
davmor2evand: http://www.davmor2.co.uk/install1.png is what you get when you hit use entire disk22:23
evandmm, fun.  Can you please attach that as well?22:24
