yaserHi, why can it be that, my Mobility ATI HD400(well recognized by Restricted Driver Manager) in Hardy, and perfectly recognized in "lspci" list(in Intrepid), now is not listed in Driver Manager?02:40
yaserlshw says something as "unclaimed", is that a kernel problem?02:41
yaseris very paradojic as fglrinfo, says there is Direct Rendering02:42

CarlFKyaser: did you file a bug report?02:43
RAOFyaser: I presume that's a Mobility HD 4000, not 40002:45

RAOFIf so, the answer is likely to be "ATI doesn't support our Xserver yet".02:46
yaserCarlk, I have never made one02:46
yaserRAOF: your right its 400002:47
RAOFAnd the reason why you're getting "direct rendering: yes" is because mesa's software rasteriser now supports direct rendering.02:48
yaserRAOF: umm, but it doesnt imply visual effects, isnt?02:48
RAOFNo.02:48
RAOF"direct rendering: yes" has _never_ been equivalent to "you have 3d acceleration".02:49
RAOFIt's just been a reasonable rule-of-thumb.02:49
yaserRAOF: umm, I see, and do you think that will be fixed by release time, as it is with Hardy?02:49
RAOFHopefully, yes.  But we're at the mercy of ATi providing a new driver.02:50
RAOF(So you're in the same boat as the poor nvidia users with geforce4s or lower)02:50
yaserRAOF: isnt there something as a backport, so that new kernel can at least recognize the card, even when there is no driver then to use it properly?02:52
RAOFyaser: No.02:52
RAOFA backport would imply that it's working somewhere.  It isn't.02:52

ubottuA schedule of Intrepid Ibex (8.10) release milestones can be found here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IntrepidReleaseSchedule09:03
Hewmazzen: Intrepid contains a lot of new stuff, so a good reason to upgrade would be if you want a sneek peak or want to help with testing. If you know you are going to have graphics issues at this stage, perhaps it's best to hold off for now.09:04
mazzenHew: you are right. but if you have productive work stations, which have to run fine, as you do programming, i wouldn't upgrade. you? i upgraded from 7.10 to 8.04 alpha6 for some reason (didn't shut down proper, ...) and everything worked fine. after the first updat was my X broken :-/.09:07
mazzenthat's the reason i updated so early to 8.10. i hope(d) that it's possible to fix that issue. but as i posted my xorg.conf and xorg.0.log in #xorg and none had an idea...09:08
Hewmazzen: Exactly. The standard warnings apply when installing alpha/prerelease software. If the machine in question is needed for something important, you should stick with Hardy.09:09
Hewmazzen: If you're comfortable with installing Intrepid just to give it a go then that's fine, as long as you are prepared for breakage and the possibility that you might have to revert back to Hardy.09:10
mazzeni have no problems with unstable and broken things... as long as it's possible to fix them :-)09:11
mazzenand if i can help to fix them - even better :)09:11
Hewmazzen: Personally, I don't have any 'critical' tasks I need to perform on my machine, so I run Intrepid and have been helping with testing since Alpha 1. In a worst-case scenario I can always use a LiveCD temporarily, or install the stable version again.09:11
Hewmazzen: Yep, if you enjoy running the latest version of everything and have little need for stability, then the Intrepid alphas may be for you :-)09:13
mazzenHew: hm... i'm afraid that's not possible at all. evolution changed the mail database, didn't?09:13
mazzenHew: *no* :) i need a stable OS. but it has to work :)09:13
Hewmazzen: Sounds like you're wanting something that doesn't exist. Hardy is probably best for you, and if you experience any bugs, seek support.09:16
Hewmazzen: I don't use evolution so I'm not sure.09:16
vega--what's this new landscape-* stuff and do i need to care about it as a normal desktop user?09:20
vega--during upgrade i get: landscape-client is not configured, please run landscape-config.09:21

stephantomhey there. I've just upgraded a testing machine to intrepid, and the new kernel won't boot. normally there would be something useful in the logs that would tell me what's wrong. but I can't find anything. it just... stops. have a look, please: http://nopaste.biz/5187412:46
Cheeryok... so this is the next version? how will I get my hands onto it?12:58
stephantomit'll be released in a final version on october 30th13:00
stephantomor you can be brave (and risk breaking your system) by upgrading now to a development release. which is not recommended at all.13:00
Cheeryoctober 30th, but that's not far away13:01
stephantomnope, it isn't13:01
stephantomyou can check out the schedule here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IntrepidReleaseSchedule13:01
Cheerysince the dev channel is quiet, I echo one of my question here:13:02
CheeryI've noticed bunch of new software and such in ubuntu, which makes me concern. Don't you fear you will introduce bunch of legacy behind you and eventually get dragged down by it?13:03
stephantomcruft is removed on a regular basis. there are also plans for an extra application that should remove leftover applications.13:03
Cheeryof course, if it all goes well, I'd never need to touch xorg.conf anymore for instance.13:04
stephantombulletproof xorg was introduced in hardy already. if you'd remove your xorg.conf now xorg should still be able to start properly. of course that mechanism gets improved as time goes by.13:05
Cheeryoh well, I have one radeon HD3650, which I can't use with fglrx, perhaps ought yet try radeonhd13:06
Cheeryit drops into black screen after bootup13:06
stephantomperhaps, yes. but be patient with intrepid (= hardy+1) until it's released. i already broke one testing machine today :-)13:08
Cheeryalso have had some trouble with audio, particularly because of some new stuff added into hardy13:08
Cheerystephantom: how did you broke it?13:08
Cheeryyou mean you broke it completely or just broke the linux install?13:08
stephantomit doesn't boot the intrepid-kernel at the moment13:09
Cheeryok, so it's not hardware broken?13:09
CheeryI don't care about few broken kernels. :)13:09
Cheeryyou can fix those without big trouble anyway13:09
stephantomno, just something with the wireless drivers i guess13:10
stephantomnothing unfixable, but it would bother people if this were a production machine13:11
PiciHave you looked for or filed a bug?13:11
Cheeryas long as I can fix my install, I'm happy.13:12
stephantomPici: I'm on it. just looking at some log files now...13:13
Picistephantom: Okay.13:13

acusterthe question was, what would ibex do16:22
acusterand let me figure out what I need to do for my install from there, please16:22
ikoniaacuster: ibex would install a ubuntu complient boot line, in the same way 8.l04 7.10, 7.l04 etc would do16:22
danbh_intrepidacuster: just prepend lines 3 and 4 with /boot16:22
ikoniadanbh_intrepid: that won'y work he's missing boot image versions16:23
acusterthe symlinks are there16:23
CarlFKacuster: you have the tool to make it work.  why not use it?16:23

danbh_intrepidikonia: whats the best way to make to have two separate installs of ubuntu, grubwise?  I think right now, if I update the kernel in the older install, it will update the old grub/menu.lst, not the one that is actually used.  Is there an official/supported/best practice way to deal with that?16:26
ikoniadanbh_intrepid: shared /boot - seperate root fle systems are my recommendations16:27
danbh_intrepidikonia: mk, thanks.  Ill have to try that sometime  : )16:27
ikoniadanbh_intrepid: thats always worked very well for me - one menu.lst and /boot to deal with, makes running say 5 installs easy to manage16:28

Turlor iwconfig eth1, it's the same17:51
badphttp://paste.ubuntu.com/48348/17:51
XiXaQcrimsun, my last intrepid image is really old. But the torrent cdimages.u-c seems to be ok.17:51
crimsunXiXaQ: you simply rsync against the current image.17:52
XiXaQcrimsun, but wouldn't that be like downloading the image all over?17:52
TurlXiXaQ, it won'r download all the image though, there are parts that haven't been changed for ages17:53

PiciXiXaQ: Yes.17:55

leniosi was running alpha 5 good17:55
leniosand alpha 6 broke something with gnome or X17:56

crimsunXiXaQ: yes, but it beats downloading the entire image17:56
XiXaQlenios, that is to be expected.17:56
XiXaQI'll try that the next time, or maybe use jidgo? I'm not entirely sure what that is either.17:57

haydnhow would I find that20:58
haydnSorry still slightly new to Ubuntu20:58
bsniderhaydn, they'll get it by you submitting a bug on that package20:59
krageryou are probably best filing a bug, if soomeone else looks into it, they will see it has been filed and hopefully see any fix20:59
haydnOk cool, how can I confirm the package?20:59
haydnOr should I say confirm which package it is20:59
kragerif you click on report bug, and try and give as much info as possible, it will get workedout21:00
bsniderwhat exactly is the problem?21:00
haydnOk cool thanks21:00
haydnCan I ask one more? I have a fail to initiate error on startup: sbin/v86d.21:01

bsniderdon't worry about that21:01
haydnwhat is it21:01
kragerI assume the issues with perl when doing dist-upgrade will be fixed?21:02
haydnok cool guys thanks for all your help.21:02
haydnMuch appreciated21:02
warren_hi21:03

warren_where can i see a screensht?21:05
bsniderthere is no change21:06
warren_what is MOTSS then?21:06
bsnidermore of the same <expletive deleted>21:06
warren_so will intrepid not have a new theme?21:06
badp_The dark theme that was apparently the default in Alpha 1 is a new theme available for picking.21:06
bsnidernot right now21:06
warren_ok21:07
bsniderwait 3 weeks or so21:07
warren_are there other new themes except the dark theme?21:07
bsniderno21:07
bsniderthis theme is ok if you use oxygen-refit2 oragne icon theme with it21:08
warren_ok, thanks21:08
badp_Python's ZSI package has a bug.21:09
badp_The file /usr/share/python-support/python-zsi/ZSI/parse.py on line 55 does:                 from xml.dom.ext.reader import PyExpat21:10
badp_that fails.21:10
badp_which breaks the lyrics in Sonata =/21:10
badp_What do I do now?21:10
kragerreport a bug21:10
madsrhDo you have any idea who I should contact to suggest this backspace in Firefox?21:12
kragermadsrh: http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/21:12
* DanaG wonders when nvidia will fix the 96 drivers.21:13
badp_Heh, it's already reported.21:14
madsrhkrager: I think there's already three threads on brainstorm so I guess that's not the way to go ;-)21:14
krageradd your say to one of them show that it os popular and should be looked at21:15
acusteris there a list of bugs against ibex maintained somewhere?21:26
pwnguinyou can find milestone'd bugs21:27
pwnguinand bugs tagged intrpid21:27
pwnguinintrepid21:27
pwnguinbut there's no rule requiring a version be attached to a bug21:28
bsnideri think youu just answered your own question21:28
pwnguin?21:29
rconanis there an easy(ish) way to upgrade only the kernel and nvidia modules to intrepid versions?21:42
_Zeus_rconan: i don't think so21:42
rconan_Zeus_, was it you i talked to about adding the repos but pinning everything else?21:43
_Zeus_rconan: huh?  i don't think sp21:43
kragerrconan: no, it's a whole integrated product, lots of dependancies21:43
_Zeus_*so21:43
_Zeus_I don't think a6 has a diff kernel21:43
rconandifferent to what?21:44
_Zeus_a521:44
_Zeus_oarry21:44
_Zeus_*sorry21:44
kragerthe only way to just update those two items is to compile and configure by hand.21:45
rconankrager, the alternative i suppose is to upgrade the entire system21:45
rconanwhat is the stability of intrepid like these days?21:45
_Zeus_it's fine for me21:45
_Zeus_knock on wood21:45
kragerwhich I am doing now, I would wait until it is stable, dist upgrade is a bit borked21:46
cyphasehmm, new format for the intrepid changes mailing list..21:46
DanaG!worksforme21:46
ubottuCommon Sense: Just because you can, does not mean you should (and especially recommend to others). Think before you do. "Works for me" does not mean it is ok. The latest version of everything is not always useful if you aim for stability. Please see http://geekosophical.net/random/worksforme/21:46
_Zeus_DanaG: i know that...21:46
DanaGGood idea: make a full system backup first.21:46
DanaGThat way, if you decide you don't like it, you can go back.21:46
rconani can't backup! my disks which i could do backups too are on the controller which the hardy kernel wont use21:47
rconani guess it's just a leap of faith21:47
DanaGEek.21:47
_Zeus_do you have /home in a seperate partition?21:47
rconanno21:47
_Zeus_crap21:47
badp_Are you dual booting?21:47
rconanif it b0rks I can recover from a livecd as long as i find one with a new enough kernel21:47
rconanno21:47
_Zeus_do you have important data?21:47
rconannot immensley21:48
DanaGIdea:21:48
rconani can do 1 DVDs worth or so21:48
DanaGBoot the liveCD of Intrepid, and use the LiveCD to make a backup to the other disks.21:48
_Zeus_if you don't have /home in a sep partition, then i would back it up before upgrading21:48
kragerI use an external HD and partimage21:48
DanaGThat works, too... the key is having a new enough kernel on the LiveCD.21:48
rconani'll backup a little over the network and then go for it i think21:48
krageralso /usr , /usr/local , /var and /home one separate partitions21:49
_Zeus_what the?21:49
_Zeus_who does that?21:49
DanaGI only separate home.21:49
DanaGEverything else is overdoing it -- and a big hassle, too.21:49
_Zeus_yeah, i only seperate home as well21:50
rconani used to separate home but my number of disks was getting too much for my little power supply21:50
badp_After the upgrade, some people have had X failures, and I had too.21:50
badp_</fair-warning<21:50
_Zeus_I don't want to keep those folders when reinstalling, anyway21:50
DanaGNVIDIA less than GeForce5 (FX) is broken.21:50
_Zeus_i would say a6 broke glx, but that's not true21:50
rconanhave there been any reports of filesystem corruption that you have heard?21:50
_Zeus_it was really -321:50
_Zeus_*kernel-321:50
_Zeus_well, ill bbl21:51
rconanha... everyone is too scared to say there haven't been fs corruption problems in case i am the first...21:51
badp_I haven't had any, but !worksforme21:51
badp_Hell, my computer overheated and turned down /hard/ during the distro upgrade, package setup phase.21:52
rconani would hope mine wont overheat21:52
badp_Wasn't it for the dpkg option in the recovery menu I'd have had to just reinstall the thing21:52
rconanit's a new proccy and motherboard so it's running at stock speeds with watercooling21:53
kragerI had no fs corruption, have you ran smartctl on your discs21:53
badp_Nah, it's that something set the cpu governor to Performance and due to not-at-their-best fans my laptop can't stand that for long.21:53
mattikIs there kernel or xorg updates today in intrepid?21:53
badp_PolicyKit got in the way of me setting it back.21:53
DanaGOh yeah, handy thing for reading status from things in SOME usb and firewire enclosures: HDD Sentinel21:53
mattikMy X is disappeared and it gave only ipw2200 error from kernel. I think wireless cannot crash X?21:55
mattikBug #27227821:57
ubottuLaunchpad bug 272278 in xorg "screen disappeared after latest updates and reboot. I can use only recovery mode." [Undecided,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/27227821:57

mirakwhere are stored the files in the Trash of gnome ?23:27
badp_It's an "hidden" folder23:28
badp_I think it's in your home directory, probably called ".Trash-mirak"23:28
miloszhey guys23:33
miloszsounds is totally messed up here23:33
miloszALSA doesn't work at all, controlling the volume in GNOME using the mixer applet thing that pops up the volume control over keyboard doesn't work at all23:33
miloszit appears and adjusts the value but the volume doesn't change23:33
miloszi had no time to diagnose ALSA problems further23:33
miloszi'm familiar with the libasound API and the layout in /dev, but i had no time yet23:34
Prettohi guys23:38
Prettoi am looking for udevmonitor on intrepid23:38
Prettono clue about it?23:40
dave__I have a realtek card that is not being recognised: 02:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device 8199 (rev 22)23:41
Prettodave__,  recognised, but the module didn't load?23:42
dave__Pretto: Yes23:42
dave__Pretto: And I don't know what module should support it23:43
Prettodave__, I think that there's no module for that device23:45
Prettodave__, but I am not  sure23:45
Prettodave__, by the rule, the module  would be called rtl819923:46
Prettonobody knows about udevmonitor?23:52
Prettohaha23:55
Prettoudevmonitor turned into udevadm monitor command23:56
