=== wjs_ltop_ is now known as wjs_ltop === superm1|away is now known as superm1 [02:06] hi guys, i can't setup mythbuntu in my Ubuntu or even when i use the live version. I get this message at the end of "Launch MythTV setup". [02:06] what's the problem?? [02:07] I have ubuntu hardy, and i installed all needed packages like: Mythbuntu Control Center + mysql ....etc [02:07] i don't know what's the problem!!! [02:08] i also get the same result when i try to setup it in the Live CD of mythbuntu 8.04.1 [02:24] sorry i didn't mention the message!!! The message is this: "Cannot login to database" [02:24] :) [02:24] with an existing backend? [02:25] this was just a frontend you were setting up? [02:25] yeah [02:26] so that means that you dont have the password right on the frontend [02:26] or the backend isn't listening for connections on mysql [02:26] test the connection using mcc [02:26] on the mysql tab [02:28] superm1: what's mysql tab?? or where can i find it? [02:28] open mythbuntu control center [02:28] and it's on one of the side tabs [02:29] mythtv configuration tab actually [02:29] i found it, but how to do mcc?? [02:31] mcc just stands for mythbuntu control centre [02:31] when i click "Test mysql connection", i get Failure! [02:32] i'm sure i have the right password, cuz i got it from here: /etc/mythtv/mysql.txt [02:33] i will tell what i've done. I installed the packages, then directly i clicked "launch mythTV setup" in mcc. I didn't do any setup to backend or something!!! [02:33] okay so then make sure that mysql port is open [02:33] on the backend [02:34] turn on the "Mysql" service on that box [02:34] how to do that? [02:34] open up mcc on that box [02:34] and its on the services tab [02:35] i did [02:35] some kind of installation is running [02:35] have you restarted since then? [02:36] what do you mean by "restarted"?? The computer or the mcc?? [02:36] the computer [02:36] i dont remember if it takes effect immediately [02:36] should i go to restart now? [02:36] well you can check if the port is open now [02:36] netstat -ant | grep 3306 [02:36] how? [02:37] i got this: tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:3306 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN [02:37] okay so it's listening [02:37] what to do now? [02:37] hum [02:37] cry? [02:38] :'( [02:38] good? [02:38] well on the frontend, did you make sure you entered the right ip address for the backend? [02:38] in that mcc instance? [02:40] I'm not even sure if i have the backend installed and setup properly [02:40] ! [02:40] Sorry I don't know about [02:40] how can i check it? [02:40] well if you cant connect to the sql database, that's a moot point [02:41] superm1: so...? [02:41] i feel that the problem is from the backend. How can i check if it's installed and running properly? [02:42] rockyrock, well the backend doesn't matter if sql doesnt work [02:42] because it has to connect to sql first before the backen [02:42] dd [02:42] so?? [02:42] so answer my other question.. [02:43] are you sure you entered the right ip address on the frontend mcc? [02:43] which one? [02:43] no i'm not [02:43] i don't know what you're talking about!!! [02:43] okay so in mcc on the frontend [02:43] it asks for mysql user, mysql pass [02:43] mysql database [02:43] and ip address (or hostname) [02:43] that ip address is the one of the backend [02:44] you mean Mysql server, righ? [02:44] well they're the same box aren't they? [02:44] should be the same ip addresss.. [02:44] yeah i have only one computer [02:44] Mysql server: localhost [02:44] wait this is the same computer? [02:45] as in frontend and backend on same box? [02:45] yeah [02:46] oh that's a difference scenario [02:46] thnx god [02:46] :) [02:46] if you dont have anything else actually working yet here, just redo your install [02:46] it's a lot faster than debugging what the problem was [02:47] i get always the same result, even when i boot from the Live CD [02:47] you wont be able to do it off the live cd [02:47] the sql service isn't running [02:47] it's only running after you finish install [02:48] ok i didn't know that. [02:48] but i want it to run on my Ubuntu Hardy [02:48] i don't want to install other distro [02:49] okay well then you have to debug what went wrong here [02:49] most likely you chose a root password when you installed the packages [02:49] yeah [02:49] and that throws things off [02:49] dpkg-reconfigure mythtv-database [02:49] and enter it when its asked for [02:50] ok, i got a question: On what host does the mysql server reside? [02:51] localhost [02:52] next, asks for the root? i pressed enter. Now it asks for the password [02:52] what to do? [02:52] enter any password? [02:52] can I watch tv live with mythtv? [02:53] enter the root mysql password you chose before [02:53] bluntz, sure [02:54] ok with a cable tv tuner? [02:54] Q: Will you be using other computers running mythTV? Yes or No? [02:54] sure [02:54] bluntz, ^ [02:54] rockyrock, well will you? [02:54] no [02:54] then answer no :) [02:55] i did, and it disappeared. [02:55] what to do next? [02:55] run dpkg-reconfigure mythtv-common [02:55] keep all the defaults [02:55] and then try running mythtv-setup [02:55] it gave me this msg: * Starting MySQL database server mysqld [ OK ] [02:57] I always manage to screw up the setup [02:58] and the tv listings especially never worked [03:00] can it be setup to work without the listings? [03:00] sure [03:00] makes less sense [03:00] superm1: when i clicked mythtv-setup, some "them image processing" happened and now i'm in the Main. I have these categories: General, Capture card...etc [03:00] rockyrock, okay so it worked [03:00] I couldnt find a free alternative [03:00] carry on [03:00] bluntz, depends where in the world you live [03:00] superm1: how to detect my card? [03:00] us [03:01] bluntz, in the US & canada, you can use schedules direct or over the air listings [03:01] bluntz, or nothing at all [03:01] bluntz, your call [03:01] do you have a walkthru listed anywhere? [03:02] look at the pdf on the website [03:02] it will walk you through mythtv-setup [03:02] I used a video for mythdora last time and got close [03:03] and by nothing [03:03] he means you have to setup none [03:03] theres a video for mythbuntu out there too, but the mythtv-setup part is the same [03:03] and 1 more [03:04] can it be run without it taking over the whole sys? [03:05] would be nice if someone made a live mythtv distro [03:05] hehe [03:07] bluntz, doesn't make sense because you need to have a disk for buffer at very minimum [03:07] it could use my swap [03:07] but anyway [03:08] wouldnt work for me cuz my card has to have the modules reloaded every boot [03:08] kernel dont set it up rite [03:08] superm1: i have a DVB card, should i use PAL TV format?? This is not mentioned in the pdf. [03:09] rockyrock, depends on your locale [03:09] if you are somewhere that uses PAL, sure [03:10] i don't know actually. I have my DVB card connected directly with the Dish. [03:11] so i don't know [03:11] rockyrock, well where do you live? [03:11] Syria [03:11] i'm pretty sure you're pal [03:11] http://www.geocities.com/fon_is_Fun/ntsc_or_pal.htm [03:12] ok [03:13] what about the channel frequency table? [03:13] i'm not sure what's normally used by you [03:13] i don't know why do i need that! I should set the frequency of NileSat [03:14] pick something that seems somewhat sensible, and if it doesnt work you can go back [03:14] ok, but where should i choose the frequencies of the satellite that i want? [03:15] like Hotbird for example [03:15] or nilesat [03:15] i'm really not so sure [03:16] I guess myth really needs its own box? will it work on a p3 450? [03:17] If you're not sure, i have a question now. Can mythtv play DVB channels?? i.e channels from satellites?? [03:19] bluntz, for a backend sure, but for a frontend i would refer to the website for the requirements [03:19] rockyrock, yeah it can [03:20] as long as they're not encrypted [03:20] you'd need a CAM of sorts to use encrypted channels [03:20] Ive always been confused by the frontend/backend scheme [03:21] well you dont need to do them separate [03:21] but its a feature that you can [03:22] do I understand frontend=encoder backend=viewer? [03:22] other way around [03:23] so the p3 would be ok to encode? [03:24] if you have a hardware encoding tv tuner yes [03:24] like a pvr-xxx [03:24] or simila [03:24] its an old pinnacle studio/rave [03:24] analog cable [03:24] thats a framegrabber [03:24] aint gonna do the trick [03:25] so it wont work for myth at all? [03:25] you'll need a more power if you want to use that card [03:26] superm1: what's the video source?? I didn't understand it from the pdf [03:26] EIT for you likely [03:26] superm1: what's EIT? [03:29] I have the card in a k7 512 box and it runs all the other tv wares ok [03:30] does anybody here have a box up and running? [03:32] superm1: what should i name the video source??? I don't know what's video source is. Can you explain it to me plz, cuz how can i name something i don't know what it is? [03:32] /dev/video0 ?????????? [03:33] hey [03:33] I am trying to figure out how to set up my turtle bay [03:33] sound card, and get the optical out to work [03:33] currently my reciever says its not recieving a signal for it [03:33] my motherboard has onboard sound as well, I think alsa is using the onboard sound, how do I check? [03:34] kernel has options for turtle beach cards [03:34] do you know how I could switch it on? [03:34] recompile kernel [03:35] ok, I gotta recompile [03:35] maybe modprobe if ur lucky [03:35] ok I guess I will try that [03:35] the card is detected [03:35] I can see it under the detected cards [03:35] I just dont think its being used [03:36] lsmod and see if module loaded [03:37] I run 2 cards also [03:37] superm1: oh god!!! I found how to scan for channels, but i should enter the frequencies for each channel!!!!! Is there anyway that it can scan for all frequencies for a specific satellite? [03:38] bluntz, when I look at alsamixer [03:38] its using the onboard sound [03:38] I dunno what the module I am looking for in lsmod would be [03:39] I just pick witch card in properties under mixer [03:39] I run both for 8 channell stereo lol [03:40] in properties [03:40] under mixer [03:40] I only see [03:40] Applications->Settings->Sound [03:40] doubleclik the speaker [03:41] volume control comes up [03:41] look File [03:41] change device [03:42] see it there? [03:42] let me see [03:42] yea [03:42] that was where [03:42] I changed it before [03:42] its changed there [03:42] but it doesnt actually work [03:42] cause I think alsa isnt using it [03:44] did you run alsaconf? [03:46] rockyrock, sorry i've not worked with satellite directly [03:46] rockyrock, cant help too much more at this point [03:48] let me try also conf [04:00] when i try to scan any frequency, i get no channels! I don't know what's the problem. I tried several frequencies that i'm sure they work === tgm4883_laptop changed the topic of #ubuntu-mythtv to: Mythbuntu 8.10 Alpha 6 Now Available for testing http://www.mythbuntu.org/8.10/alpha6 :: Mythbuntu 8.04.1 Released Please see http://www.mythbuntu.org/8.04.1/release :: See our website at http://www.mythbuntu.org for release and support information :: Paste logs @ http://mythbuntu.pastebin.com Please stick around for people to answer your question. [08:48] gotta say [08:48] mythbuntu 8x is worlds above 7.10 [08:52] yeah the first release was a mad rush for getting things in [08:52] 8.04 is more polishing [08:52] so will be 8.10 [08:52] hopefully 9.04 will be some more reworking and features again [08:53] And 0.22 :) [08:54] personally i'm thinking that once i've abstracted the installer enough, i won't be stuck focusing on installer bugs most of the cycle like i did for 8.04 and i have been for 8.10 [08:54] which will leave more time for working on the stuff that's interesting to end users [09:00] that would be awesome [09:01] I fixed all my issues I had last night superm1 [09:01] for some reason my mac was creating messed up install cds [09:01] which was why none of the options were working on the menu [09:01] !stab cbrunner's mac [09:01] * Zinn stabs cbrunner's mac with a rusty spork. [09:02] yea, on 8.0 my display worked flawlessly [09:02] I get 1080i now [09:02] and I got my optic audio working [09:02] which is sweet [09:04] should have done this a while ago it sounds then [09:04] yea [09:04] didnt even realize there was a new release [09:05] the only thing that doesnt seem to be working is the nfs share [09:05] but I can work on that later === superm1 is now known as superm1|away === croppa_ is now known as croppa [10:16] software freedom day is the gayest thing i've ever hyeard of [11:08] hi... I am in the process of installing mythbuntu for the first time - in the partition manager, it suggests to use two partittions, one 22 % of the HD for /dev/sda3, and the rest for "mythbuntu" - anyone can tell the logic behind this? [11:09] my intention was to use some 10 GB, rather than the suggested 97 GB, for system, and the rest for films etc, which is more like 5 % for sda3, not 22... but is there a good reason for mythbuntu's suggestion? [12:12] i've just made a brand new installation of mythbuntu, and configured the computer to use propr drivers (fglrx) - but when watching live TV the image jumps, is not a steady flow. anyone got ideas on what to check? [12:12] backend runs on other machine, connection via ethernet cable [13:08] Hey, any of the devvys around? I need to ask a couple of technical questions regarding what info a frontend needs to connect, and then put forward a suggestion for an app that might make mythbuntu that little bit cooler [13:39] i have a script that I want to run on log in (sshfs-mount) - how do I set this to be done automatically, in xfce / mythbuntu? have used gnome sessions settings before [13:42] you can probably do the same... though generally, for stuff like that - I'd set it up as a script to run on boot... [13:42] or add to fstab [13:43] fstab is not a good idea, it seems - the network is not up when it tries to mount from fstab... [13:44] go another idea on where to put it? [13:46] Mez, got any idea on where to put it so it is run on boot - after network is up? [13:47] hume_, er, yeah, one sec [13:48] ok [13:50] create a script called /etc/rc2.d/S99sshfs-mount (the sshfs-mount can be anything) [13:50] actually [13:50] ignore that [13:51] edit /etc/rc.local ...
