haydnHey everyone I was hoping someone could help me trouble shoot a crash. I'm not sure where to start00:52
jadamsI just did an update on my laptop (ati graphics) and now X won't start due to conflicting ABI versions01:14
EvilDaemonjadams: thats not good. are you on irssi then?01:51
RAOFjadams: That'll be the fact that fglrx doesn't support our X server.  Just remove xorg-driver-fglrx, and move your xorg.conf out of the way.01:52
majnoonhow get intrepid ??02:10
danbh_intrepidupdate-manager -d02:12
Hobbseemajnoon: if you have to ask, you *probably* shouldn't be running it02:13
majnoon:P:P:P:P:P02:14
acusterhey all, how do I force installation of a package (it's source code with a trivial version difference)02:18
acusterdpkg --force-all is not working02:18
acusteris there some more persuasive flag to pass?02:18
RAOFacuster: No.  We'd need the dpkg error message to give you any more help.02:22
acusterokay, thanks. I'll pass on this for now and keep working.02:25
blur2040 I have a fiddly little issue with with synaptic under Intrepid Ibex.  No matter which repository I set, Synaptic isn't showing all pacakges.  Two examples are Nethack and Compizconfig-settings manager.  I can see them in aptitude and the add/remove applications program, but not under synaptic.  It's driving me nuts.  Any ideas?02:46
blur2040Has anyone had any issues with getting Synaptic to recognize all available packages under intrepid ibex?03:03

`Matiris it possible to install an i386 .deb on amd64?04:25
_Zeus_it is04:26
RAOFYes, but there's no guarantee it'll work.04:26
_Zeus_use dpkg -x i think04:26
_Zeus_try man dpkg04:26
RAOFdpkg --install --force-architecure will install it.  But it's entirely possible that doing so will overwrite a 64bit library that you need, and hence break your 64bit apps.04:27
_Zeus_yes, so use carefully04:27
`Matiryeah, just been thinking about trying Lotus Symphony04:30
redlegionhello all!04:40
redlegionI have a quick question (at least, I hope)04:40
redlegionI'm trying to roll my own *.deb of xmms 1.204:41
redlegionoh, well crap, nevermind then! just changed /debian/rules04:41
redlegionthanks anyways!04:41
redlegioni really need to check out the significance of LDFLAGS04:44
TeslaTonyAre there any known major issues with upgrading from 8.04 to 8.10?04:50
redlegioni dunno, i had weird nvidia driver issues04:50
redlegioni had to force a kernel reinstall after grabbing the latest 17704:51
RAOFIf there are, they're documented on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IntrepidIbex/TechnicalOverview I believe.04:51
RAOFIf, by "grabbing the latest 177", you mean "downloading and installing the drivers from nvidia.com", please don't :)04:51
TeslaTonyWhat's wrong with the NVidia drivers?04:52
RAOFNothing, as far as I'm aware.  As long as you're using the packaged drivers, everything should be fine.04:52
RAOFOh, and as long as you've got a > geforce4 card.04:53
TeslaTonyI always have trouble with the open source drivers, but the restricted ones that Ubuntu fetches for me work04:53
TeslaTonyOr at least with previous installs04:54
redlegionnoooo, I just used the restricted repository04:56
redlegionit's a pain in the ass to rebuild for every kernel patch04:56
redlegionpretty much why i don't build my own kernel anymore04:56
RAOFRight.  And they won't actually install from nvidia.com without a patch anyway.04:56
intangirhey where can i download the new release?04:57
intangirfrom torrents04:57
intangirwheres the torrent file i mean, i want to get it04:57
TeslaTonyhttp://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/intrepid/alpha-6/04:58
TeslaTonyYou need to scroll down a bit, but the torrent files are there04:58
intangiris it working for yall?04:59
intangiri need new releases 2 or so times a year just so i can start fresh after screwing up my installs ;)05:05
intangirinstall too much junk and it just gets to be too big of a pain in the ass to slim down, easier to just reinstall what i still use05:06
dfgashow do i get my kernel to panic on purpose? i want to try something.05:08
RAOFdfgas: Write a tiny module that dereferences a null pointer?05:10
BHSPitMonkeydivide by zero05:15
_Zeus_divide by zero will cause a kernel panic?05:16
RAOFNot unless it's in a kernel module.05:18
RAOF_Zeus_: Basically, you're either going to have to find and exploit a kernel bug, or write a small kernel module.  I don't believe there's a magic "make the kernel panic" button.05:19
dfgasdarn, heh05:23
RAOFYou want to test out the new crashdump/kerneloops facilities?05:24
TeslaTonyThere is indeed a magic "Make the kernel panic" button. Unfortunately, it only works on Ubuntu Unreasonable Unicorn for now05:27
majnoonit no let me upgrade05:42
=== calc__ is now known as calc
cwilludoesn't killing init cause a panic?06:06
RAOFReally?  Why would it?06:06
RAOFYou're welcome to test :)06:07

musikgoat|lappythen restarted ff, and it still asks to install06:20
danbh_intrepidsudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras06:20
musikgoat|lappykk, trying that out, thanks06:21
danbh_intrepidI found I never got a popup on youtube, because youtube would detect and send me to a oops, you have no flash page06:21
yao_ziyuani can see why now06:22
yao_ziyuanthey use different naming06:22
musikgoat|lappydanbh_intrepid: tbh, i'd get the popup at my homepage, netvibes, cause there is some flash request or something, but youtube gives me the same message as you06:22
yao_ziyuanppa.launchpad.net's kde 4.1.1 use names like "kmix-kde4"06:22
yao_ziyuanwhile intrepid official repos uses "kmix"06:22
yao_ziyuanso i must do a reinstall from intrepid official repos06:23
danbh_intrepidyao_ziyuan: why again?06:23
musikgoat|lappyit will be interesting how ubuntu goes about making flash "seemless" if you are going to need the restricted extras package.06:23
danbh_intrepidyao_ziyuan: cant you just remove the repo, and then remove the packages through synaptic?06:23
RAOFmusikgoat|lappy: By hooking into the "you need to install plugins to view $THING" system, as we currently do?06:24
danbh_intrepidmusikgoat|lappy: well, that installer used to work06:24
musikgoat|lappythanks danbh_intrepid worked fine06:24

darthanubisoh since07:01
RAOFintangir: Probably by installing nvidia-glx-17707:01
intangirya every relaese since thing has booted without issue except for this one07:01
RAOF(The nvidia-glx-177 package, I mean)07:01
intangircan i do that on the install CD?07:01
darthanubisyes07:01
RAOFOh, this is on the liveCD?07:01
RAOFintangir: Please file a bug against the xserver-xorg-video-nv package, then.07:02
intangirhwo can i tell if its even using nv?07:02
intangiri have no idea what its even using07:02
RAOFBecause you're on the livecd, it's using nv.07:02
RAOFYou can check /var/log/Xorg.0.log to confirm.07:03
intangirwell ... the nv package worked for me before07:03
intangirok ill try it this time07:03
intangirso i nstall nvidia-glx-177, then what?07:03
RAOFIndeed.  That would make this a regression, which (a) is generally easier to track down, and (b) we really, really care about!07:03
intangirhow do i make it use it?07:03
RAOFEdit /etc/X11/xorg.conf to add "nvidia" as the driver.  Alternatively, if you're in X now, you can use the Restricted Manager.07:04
intangirim not on the intrepid right now07:04
intangiralso i checked my xorg.conf and it had practically nothing07:05
RAOFThat's right, they don't have much anymore.07:05
intangirso i dont know where to add nvidia anymore07:05
intangiri used to just replace nv with nvidia07:05
intangirbut its gone07:05
RAOFBut please file a bug! (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Reporting may help you)07:05
intangirlet me boot again and grab that log07:05
BHSPitMonkeyintangir, search the file for "driver"07:11

intangirhehehehe it came up! :) weee07:16
astraljavaintangir: Why not use envyng? It does the config part for ya. :) Though you have to have been using it before if you needed to go blindly at it.07:17
intangiri tried envy once and it had a great little setup gui07:17
intangirbut it was .. in X07:17
astraljavaIt has a text-mode too.07:17
astraljava`sudo envyng -t`07:17
intangiri am not familiar with that ;) so i doubt i can do it blind hahah07:17
astraljavaYeah that's true. :)07:18
intangirthe titlebars look glitched sometimes, you notice that?07:18
RAOFintangir: Yeah; nvidia bug.07:19
RAOFLo07:19
RAOF(Longstanding nvidia bug)07:19
astraljavaHmm... I haven't noticed that. Wonder why.07:20
RAOFYou don't use compiz?07:20
astraljavaAhhhh... that's why. :)07:20
astraljavaNo, I hate the damned thing.07:20
RAOFRight.  Then you won't be expereincing _any_ of the driver bugs compiz exposes ;)07:21
astraljava...and I thank my lucky stars, then. :)07:21
intangirmy text mode ttys or whatever are still all glitched to crap07:21
astraljavaThose might not be corrected until you reboot. It's a separate thing to X, which can be corrected by the way you already did, Ctrl+Alt+Backspace.07:22
astraljavaNot sure about that, though.07:23
intangiri thought that was just for X07:23
intangirlets see07:23
intangir~ya that does nothing to the text ones07:23
intangiri havent installed yet07:23
intangirand i think im gonna give this a bit more review before i try it..07:23
astraljavaOh I should have been clearer, they _definitely_ are separate from X. :)07:23
intangirya thats whats weird07:24
astraljavaAnd thus Ctrl+Alt+Backspace do nothing for them.07:24
intangirif X is erroring, why are my text ttys so screwd up07:24
intangiri think it has to do with trying to use vesa, or displaying the intro graphic while loading07:24
astraljavaBut what bit I'm not sure of, is that whether reboot only fixes them or if there is another way.07:24
RAOFThe VTs can be corrupted in any number of ways.07:25
RAOFAlthough I'd expect the binary nvidia drivers to not kill them like that.07:25
intangirit was ruined before i got the nvidia driversw07:25
RAOFMaybe the problem is a framebuffer driver?07:25
RAOFYeah, but switching to X and then back to another VT should make the nvidia driver clean up the VT state.07:26
intangirwell i gotta crash though07:26
intangirthanks guys07:26
intangirsee ya tomarrow probably07:26

MvGHi! I'd like to give the latest Intrepid a try. However, things smelled of trouble even before I got really started, mostly due to me using KDE/kubuntu. Is this the channel to discuss such things?09:33
MvGI couldn't find a way to change release with adept. Update-manager would pull in all that GNOME synaptics stuff, which felt not very kubuntu-like, and update-manager-kde isn't available for hardy afaict. What's the "official" upgrade path?09:33
mvoMvG: you can use "do-release-upgrade -d" on the terminal, that gives you a cli upgrade09:34
bugabundo_workMvG: are you on hardy?09:34
MvGI then modified my sources.list, replacing hardy with intrepid. apt-get dist-upgrade would change quite a lot, and would remove adept. This seems really strange, and probably not what one would expect on kubuntu. Can't tell why it would be removed, or what would replace it.09:34
bugabundo_workupdate-manager -d or do-release-upgrade -d should work09:34
MvGbugabundo_work: Yes, hardy.09:34
bugabundo_workif not, please fill a bug against it09:34
MvGmvo: trying...09:34
bugabundo_workchanging Sources is NOT the proper way to upgrade09:35
bugabundo_workbecause Policy changes won't get applied09:35
bugabundo_workMvG: do you have the kubuntu meta-package installed?09:35
bugabundo_workor did you by any change remove it in the past?09:36
MvGbugabundo_work: I see no kubuntu package on hardy. apt-get install doesn't either.09:37
MvGDoing release upgrade...09:38
bugabundo_workMvG: kubuntu-desktop ?09:39
bugabundo_workMvG: or kubuntu-kde4-desktop ?09:39
bugabundo_workdid you change your sources back?09:39
MvGkubuntu-desktop is installed, yes.09:40
bugabundo_workthen file a bug...09:40
MvGI changed my sources back before doing the release upgrade. The upgrade failed, however, due to insufficient space on my boot partition. :-(09:40
bugabundo_workahhh09:41
bugabundo_workyes that old bug09:41
bugabundo_workthat update-manager doesn't check for disk space09:41
bugabundo_workbefore upgrading09:41
MvGI know I've got a slightly small boot partition, it has caused trouble in the past. Annyoing thing, that.09:42
bugabundo_workMvG: funny enough I aint finding it09:43
MvGrerunning upgrade after moving my old initrd now.09:43

bugabundo_workactually this bug should be on apt-get09:43
mvowell, it does check for disk space, just during the upgrade (how else would it know how much it is going to need :)09:45
bugabundo_workI know that mvo09:45
bugabundo_workit can't GUESS09:45
bugabundo_workbut can put around an extimetive09:45
mvo:)09:45
bugabundo_workfrom the usual size from users09:46
bugabundo_workeveryone knows at least from previous upgrades09:46
bugabundo_workthat you are going to need about 400-800 MiBs of packages09:46
MvGhttps://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+bug/264282 seems related... I'm looking forwart to seeing how much space the upgrade will really need. Had to remove my old kernel image in addition to the initrd, the latter alone wasn't enough. :-(09:46
ubottuUbuntu bug 264282 in update-manager "hardy dist-upgrade to intrepid fails due to miscalculation of required space in /boot" [Medium,Triaged]09:46
mvoright, that does make sense09:46
bugabundo_workplus the necessary amount of disk to unpack09:46
mvoMvG: how much space do you have in /boot ?09:47
bugabundo_workso... should we file a bug against update manager09:47
TuTUXGafter i switch from a wireless connection to cable, network-manager keeps trying to connect to the wireless hop and i have to manually disable wireless09:47
bugabundo_workso you can get it a bit smarter by using "AROUND" extimetives?09:47
MvGmvo: 31077k09:47
MvGOK, finally got the upgrade convinced I've enough space. do-dist-upgrade now would like to remove adept. Do you know of a way to find out /why/ it is removing a given package?09:49
bugabundo_workmvg you have 31MiBs free?09:49
bugabundo_workor total size?09:49
MvGmvo: Total size. I don't know the last free amount that still caused it to complain.09:50
mvoMvG: there is extensive logging in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ - if you put main.log up somewhere I can have a look09:50
mvoMvG: we may also need apt.log (that has more details on the dependency resolver results)09:50
mvobugabundo_work: maybe extend one of the existing bugreprot with the suggestion to do a eastimate early? or a new whishlist request, either way is fine09:51
bugabundo_workMvG: df -h should give you free disk09:52
MvGmvo: apt.log looks more interesting: http://rafb.net/p/1fPAE548.html09:53
MvGbugabundo_work: Yes it does, but as I said, I moved initrd, still didn't have enough space, next moved kernel image, then had enough space. So I don't know how much I had when it last failed, short of moving files around yet again.09:54
mvoMvG: could you still put main.log up? it contains information if your kubuntu install was detected as one09:56
MvGmvo: sure: http://rafb.net/p/rDiSCz13.html09:57
* bugabundo_work going throuth update-manager bugs09:58
* mvo hugs bugabundo_work for this10:01
mvoMvG: thanks, it looks like all the old adept-* are all replaced now with a single adept package, but its seems there is something funny with the dependencies10:03
MvGmvo: I agree.10:03
* bugabundo_work drafts When users upgrade to the development version using update-manager -d or do-release-upgrade -d stats should be collected and sent to some kind of archive (after user allows them to) so that a approximated size necessary can be calculated in order to prevent running out of free disk on future dist upgrades by users (either still on development versions or Stable releases)10:04
MvGAccording to http://packages.ubuntu.com/intrepid/adept adept depends on libapt-pkg-libc6.8-6-4.6 provided by apt. So the libapt-pkg-libc6.7-6-4.6 in my apt.log might be the funny thing. Question is, where does it come from?10:05
MvGStop, sorry, that's one of the old adept subpackages.10:06
mvoMvG: it looks like this is a bug in that it looks at the old package, I'm testing a workaround10:06
mvoMvG: (that may take a bit)10:07
MvGmvo: Don't bother finding a workaround just for me: I can simply upgrade and manually install adept afterwards using apt-get.10:07
mvoMvG: I have a test system here that shows the same behavior, so its good that you brought it up :)10:07
MvGSo if it's just me, then never mind. However, if this could hit others as well, you'd want to find a general solution, not only a single case workaround.10:07
bugabundo_workmvo: what's the old kernel funtion name we now have on intrepid10:08
bugabundo_workthat I guess ben develop?10:08
MvGbtw there are some bugs out there about adept crashing during an upgrade. I wonder whether some of those could be due to adept being removed dusing the upgrade. Not likely, though, I guess.10:09
mvobugabundo_work: you mean the function in the code? or the name of the config bits that control the behavior? DistUpgrade.cfg has [KernelRemoval] and there version, basenames, and types10:10
bugabundo_workjust a simple name that identifies it, so I can mention it on the BTS report against update-manager10:10
bugabundo_workI guess KernelRemoval will do10:10
MvGapt.log says: "Package adept has broken dep on adept-common" which disagrees with http://packages.ubuntu.com/intrepid/adept10:11

bugabundo_workhumm I remember reading about it on Devel and kernel ML10:15
bugabundo_workbut nor my mail client archive nor google is hitting it10:15
mvooh, you mean the last good kernel feature?10:16
bugabundo_work#ubuntu-kernel is to quite at this hour to be any help either10:16
bugabundo_workahhh that one!10:16
mvothere is a new functionatlity that it preserves the last known good kernel at boot10:16
bugabundo_workplus it unpins old kernel so that they can be removed10:17
bugabundo_workhttps://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/removing-old-kernels10:17
MvGbugabundo_work: Will you investigate the release upgrade issue on your testing system, so that I can upgrade my system and reinstall adept manually, or would you rather I keep my current state to test any suggested solutions? Should I file a bug report, and if so, against update-manager-common in hardy, apt in any release, adept in intrepid, or all of these?10:17

bugabundo_workfor daily http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/daily-live/current/10:20
bugabundo_workyou can use rsync to complete older iso downloads10:20
bugabundo_workfrom the DVD I just download arroung 200MiBs instead 4GiBs10:20
bugabundo_workCDs go up to 100MiBs10:20
Cheeryis it a good idea to use daily alpha instead of alpha-6?10:21
mvoMvG: there is code in update-manager that detects the nvidia in the system and picks the right driver, so that is hopefully ok (on your system it picked -96) - let me know if that works all fine, that is a relatively new feature10:21
bugabundo_workCheery: I always use Dailies and also recommend them to testers10:21
bugabundo_worksaves the time to download the updates10:21
Cheeryah.10:22
MvGmvo: I had first updated just the kernel to test a bug with my atmel wlan card. In that environment I couldn't get the system to automagically build the modules, even after it selected the correct (source!) package. I hope for automatic module building now, and get back to you if it doesn't work that way.10:22
* bugabundo_work thinks if a blueprint wouldn't be better serve than a bug ticket10:23
* bugabundo_work of course Murphis Law dictates that that only happens after bug has been filed10:23
