Marie_untui am trying to customise the edubuntu usplash screen09:14
Marie_untuI already did it but09:15
Marie_untuwith the server the new usplash works fine but09:15
Marie_untuthe thin clients stop running in the usplash09:16
Marie_untuanyone knows why? thanks09:17
Marie_untuI am using a different kernel version in the clients, maybe that is the reason09:19
Marie_untubut I cant update the kernel in the clients, after chroot to ltsp09:19
nubaehave u done ltsp-update-kernels?09:20
Marie_untuyep09:21
Marie_untubut do i need chroot???09:22
Marie_untufrom the server ltsp-update-kernels says "Updating /var/lib/tftpboot directories for chroot: /opt/ltsp/i386"09:24
Marie_untubut the kernel is not updated09:24
Marie_untuin the clients i cant connect to the repositories "Could not resolve ‘gb.archive.ubuntu.com’"09:26
Marie_untuI am not behind a proxy09:26
nubaeMarie_untu: copy the sources.list from the server to the thin client09:26
Marie_untui did it09:26
Marie_untubut it seems that the chroot has not internet connection, dont know why09:27
nubaeyou are doing chroot /opt/ltsp/i386?09:27
Marie_untuin the clients I have connection but in the chroot i havent09:27
Marie_untuyep09:27
nubaeand then apt-get update09:27
Marie_untuyes09:27
nubaecheck to see whats in the sources.list in the thin client09:28
Marie_untuthe same as in the server09:28
nubaefrom the server u can do apt-get update?09:28
Marie_untuyes09:29
Marie_untufrom the server i can09:29
nubaehave u modified the chroot at all?09:29
Marie_untui checked and yes the repositories are the same in booth09:29
nubaeinstalled anyhting extra?09:29
Marie_untunope09:29
nubaehmm.09:29
Marie_untui have search at google and the only thing i get is that if i am behind a proxy i should have some problems09:30
Marie_untubut i am not behind a proxy09:30
nubaetry setting up resolv.conf in the thin client09:32
nubaeit shouldn't be necessary, but try09:32
Marie_untuok, how can i set up resolv.conf?09:33
nubaecopy it across from the server09:33
nubae/etc/resolv.conf to /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/resolv.conf09:33
Marie_untuok09:34
Marie_untukoooool09:35
Marie_untunow09:35
Marie_untuthanks man09:35
nubaeenjoy09:35
Marie_untuso to update the kernels i must use ltsp-update-kernels??09:35
Marie_untubut from the server or from the chroot?09:36
Marie_untuthe chroot i guess09:36
nubaedo apt-get update && apt-get upgrade in client09:36
nubaethen ltsp-update-kernels09:36
nubaethen ltsp-update-image09:36
Marie_untuok09:36
Marie_untuin client you mean in the chroot?09:36
nubaeyes09:36
Marie_untuok cheers mate09:36
Marie_untui ll try that, hope the usplash will work that way09:37
Marie_untui ll be around09:37
Marie_untuav a nice day09:37
nubaethanks, same09:37
Marie_untuhi again nubae09:56
Marie_untuok i did the apt-get update and upgrade, everything ok09:56
Marie_untuthen from the server i did ltsp-update-kernel and it says "Updating /var/lib/tftpboot directories for chroot: /opt/ltsp/i386"09:57
Marie_untubut the kernel in the clients still the same 1.6.14-1609:57
Marie_untusorry 2.6.24-1609:58
Marie_untuinstead of 2.6.24-1909:58
Marie_untuok wait, i forgot ltsp-update-image10:00
Marie_untucoz in the chroot "uname -a" shows the 2.6.24-19 version10:01
nubaeright ltsp-update-image is important :-)10:03
Marie_untuooops10:07
Marie_untunot working10:07
nubaewhats the problem?10:08
Marie_untuin the /opt/ltsp/i386/boot the same 2.6.24-16 kernel appears10:08
Marie_untunot the -1910:08
nubaewhat is in /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386?10:09
Marie_untuthe 2.6.24-16 version, not the -1910:10
nubaehmmm10:10
Marie_untua bit strange10:10
nubaeit is if update-kernels is telling u it modified it10:11
Marie_untunop10:11
Marie_untuit just says "Updating /var/lib/tftpboot directories for chroot: /opt/ltsp/i386"10:11
Marie_untubut not any of "`/opt/ltsp/i386/boot/vmlinuz' -> `/var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/vmlinuz' `/opt/ltsp/i386/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.15-20-386' -> `/var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/vmlinuz-2.6.15-20-386' `/opt/ltsp/i386/boot/initrd.img' -> `/var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/initrd.img' `/opt/ltsp/i386/boot/initrd.img-2.6.15-20-386' -> `/var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/initrd.img-2.6.15-20-386' " or whatever10:12
Marie_untuas the edubuntu cookbook says it may appear after ltsp-kernels-update10:12
nubaewait, do ltsp-update-kernels now10:13
Marie_untuvery strange, because in the chroot uname says "Linux ubu-laptop 2.6.24-19-generic"10:13
nubaethen check the files in /var/lib/tftpboot10:14
Marie_untusame, the -19 version doesnt appear there10:14
nubaethen update-kernels isn't working it seems10:15
Marie_untuyep, it seems so10:15
Marie_untuso what can i do, any idea?10:15
Marie_untuwhy? :)10:15
nubaemanually copy /opt/ltsp/boot to /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i38610:16
Marie_untuto be honest i didnt make any change to the system at all10:16
Marie_untuok10:16
nubaebut u should really look at the underlying causes, it makes no sense10:16
Marie_untuok, thanks10:17
Marie_untubut do you know any underlying cause that can be causing the problem??10:18
Marie_untuor how can i debug it?10:18
nubaewell I would take a look at the ltsp-update-kernels script and see whats failing10:19
Marie_untuok wait, i remember now,10:19
Marie_untuwhen i changed the usplash i manually update the initramfs10:20
Marie_untuand the i copied the kernel to the /var/lib/tftpboot10:20
Marie_untuit could be that the reason?10:21
nubaeyep10:21
Marie_untudo you know what can i do to solve it?10:21
nubaeu dont need to manually do initramfs iirc, ltsp-update-kernels should take care of that (maybe...)10:21
Marie_untuok ok, thanks10:21
nubaeu definetly dont need to copy it across though10:21
Marie_untuso that cause the problem10:22
nubaeso that probably messed it uü10:22
nubaeup10:22
nubaepermissions and such10:22
Marie_untuok, i write it down that :)10:22
Marie_untuso now, how can i restore it?10:22
nubaerecreate the chroot with build-ltsp-client10:22
nubaeor maybe just delete /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i38610:23
nubaeand then do ltsp-update-kernels10:23
Marie_untuok I ll try that10:23
Marie_untuit is gonna channge any of my clients configuration or users?10:23
nubaeif u have a lts.conf file yes10:24
Marie_untunop i havent10:24
Marie_untuthe only special thing i have are the user accounts, that i guess they will still the same after that10:25
Marie_untuisnt it10:25
nubaeyeah10:25
Marie_untuanyway i ll do a back up just in case10:25
Marie_untuthanks veeeeery much :)10:25
Marie_untuok, delete /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386 and then ltsp-update-kernels doens work, same results10:30
Marie_untubuild-ltsp-client says "command not found"10:30
nubaeltsp-build-client10:30
nubaeu have to delete /opt/ltsp/i386 though first, or back it up10:31
Marie_untuok :)10:31
Marie_untuwait, I have a backup before I change the initrdimg10:32
Marie_untushould i restore it by removing the /opt/ltsp/i386 and copy the backed up folder?10:32
Marie_untuor it is better to build the client again?10:33
Marie_untunever mind, dont answer, silly question10:34
Marie_untu:)10:34
Marie_untuthanks veeery much, again10:34
Marie_untucya aroundç10:34
Marie_untuok11:25
Marie_untunubae11:25
Marie_untuafter built the ltsp client11:25
Marie_untuthe problem still there11:25
Marie_untusame as before11:25
Marie_untuusing kernel -16 not -1911:26
Marie_untultsp-update-kernels same results11:26
Marie_untuthe thing is I changed the usplash on the server, so I update-initramfs in the server so the usplash can be updated11:27
nubaeso do that in the client too11:27
nubaeand then, without copying the image manually... do ltsp-update-keys11:28
Marie_untuok, but the thing the server is using -19 and the clients still with the -1611:29
Marie_untuim a bit fustrated now :)11:30
nubaeu need to go into chroot and apt-get update and apt-get upgrade11:31
Marie_untui did it11:31
Marie_untuclient updated and upgraded11:31
Marie_untubut then ltsp-update-kernels not working11:31
Marie_untudoenst change the kernel11:32
Marie_untuso i should copy the kernel manually11:33
Marie_untubut i just want to resolve the ltsp-update-kernel problem11:33
Marie_untuwhich kernel version are you using in the clients???11:36
Marie_untumaybe it doesnt allow to upgrade to the -19??!!11:36
Marie_untushould I manually copy the /boot/initrd.img-2.6.24-19-generic to /opt/ltsp/i386/boot and to/var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386????11:38
Marie_untuheyyy, anyone knows any related problem with ltsp-update-kernels and the update-initramfs????12:07
Marie_untuaptitude search usplash12:09
Marie_untuooops12:09
Marie_untuthis is a hell :)12:16
Marie_untuwhy when i change the usplash to the clients it doesnt boot???12:16
Marie_untuwhy? :012:17
Marie_untuis anybody out there??12:21
marketiaheya all13:28

stgraberogra: I filed bug 273147 and bug 27480315:02

stgraberwell, I updated the first and filed the second15:03
stgrabermorning sbalneav15:03
Marie_untuI have a problem updating the kernels on the clients16:06
Marie_untuthe server is running the 2.6.24-19-generic and the clients the 2.6.24-16-generic16:07
Marie_untuI have already upgraded the clients in the chroot16:07
Marie_untuwhen i execute the ltsp-update-kernels the clients' kernel is not updated, it still the -16-generic16:08
Marie_untuthe only thing I changed is the usplash in the server, and then i executed update-initramfs16:09
Marie_untuany idea? it is a bug or a misconfiguration problem?16:10
Marie_untuok, next quest.16:24
Marie_untuhow can I change manually the kernel in the clients??16:25
Marie_untuis anybody out there??16:30
sbalneavMarie_untu: So, you've done an apt-get upgrade in the chroot?16:31
Marie_untuyep16:31
Marie_untuand its upgrade sucessfully16:31
sbalneavso if you do a chroot /opt/ltsp/i38616:32
Marie_untubut then i do ltsp-update-kernels, and the kernels are not updated16:32
sbalneavdpkg -l | grep linux-image, you see that the 2.6.24-19-generic's there?16:32
Marie_untuok i did dpkg but the -19-generic is not there16:33
sbalneavok, then it didn't get upgraded in the chroot.16:34
Marie_untuso how can i upgrade the kernels16:34
Marie_untuin the chroot i did apt-get upgrade 4 times or more16:35
sbalneavWhat are you running, hardy?16:36
Marie_untuyep16:36
Marie_untu8.0416:36
Marie_untuas I said before the only thing I changed is the usplash in the server, and then i executed update-initramfs16:36
sbalneavUsually the hardy-updates apt line isn't included in the ltsp chroot's apt setup16:36
Marie_untumaybe that have something to do with that16:37
sbalneavWell, the usplash in the server doesn't have anything to do with the clients16:37
sbalneavhere's what I'd do.16:37
sbalneavexit out of the chroot16:37
sbalneavcp /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/apt/sources.list /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/apt/sources.list.orig16:37
Marie_untuok i did that already16:38
sbalneavcp /etc/apt/sources.list /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/apt/sources.list16:38
Marie_untusources.list is the same in both16:38
sbalneavgrep hardy-updates /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/apt/sources.list16:39
Marie_untuI even built the image again16:39
sbalneavDo you get any lines showing up from the above grep statement?16:40
Marie_untuyep16:41

Marie_untuwhen i execute ltsp-update-kernels it says: "Updating /var/lib/tftpboot directories for chroot: /opt/ltsp/i386" but the kernel still the same -16-generic16:43
sbalneavwell, that's because you've only got the -16 installed in the chroot.16:43
sbalneavwhat happens if you do a dist-upgrade in the chroot?16:43
Marie_untu"bash: dist-upgrade: command not found"16:44
sbalneavchroot /opt/ltsp/i386 apt-get dist-upgrade16:45
sbalneavI'm assuming you did the apt-get update first, right?16:45
Marie_untuok!16:46
Marie_untuit seems the kernel is upgrading16:46
Marie_untubut why it is not upgraded with the lstp-upgrade-kernels16:47
Marie_untuit is maybe a bug???16:47
sbalneavWell, ltsp-upgrade-kernels just copies the kernel in the chroot to the tftp area16:47
sbalneavso, if you've got an older kernel in the chroot, that's all it's going to copy16:47
sbalneavso, you have to get the chroot updated first, then you can do the ltsp-upgrade-kernels16:48
Marie_untuheyyy16:48
sbalneavas well, after the upgrade's done, you'll want to do the ltsp-update-image again.16:48
Marie_untubut i upgraded the chroot firts16:48
Marie_untuok i can imaging16:48
sbalneavwell, you didn't, because you still had only a -16 in the chroot.16:49
Marie_untuso this is why i ask here, because i apt-get updated the chroot around 10 times16:49
Marie_untuso now if i want to change the usplash in the chroot16:50
sbalneavBut you didn't do a dist-upgrade16:50
Marie_untui just need to cp usplash-new.so to /ltsp/i386/usr/lib/usplash16:51
sbalneavit didn't update until you did that.16:51
Marie_untuyep i just dist-upgrade right now16:51
Marie_untuhold down, the dist-upgrade takes the kernel from the server or from the repositorie???16:52
Marie_untuok, from the repositorie16:53
Marie_untuso if I change the usplash now in the chroot and then I update the initramfs it should work16:53
Marie_untuisnt it???16:53
Marie_untuI have been with this usplash issue all day!!!! :016:54
Marie_untuheyy sbalneav16:57
Marie_untuthanks very much :)16:57
jc2itI have Ubuntu 8.04 + LTSP 5. It works for the most part. There are inconsistancies which appear to relate to a graphics card problem, although I am not convinced of that. One issue we have noticed is when the user on the thin client changes to a screen saver it returns that Thin client to the login screen. Someone here suggested it was a bug. I would like to track it down. Yesterday I got my Thinclients set up so I can get a root shell in the17:19
jc2itThin client by pressing Ctrl+Atl+F217:19
jc2itWhere should I look to see what is actually happening when it returns the user to the LDM login screen17:19
sbalneavSorry, was afk for a bit17:20
sbalneavjc2it: probably is a bug, but quite frankly, you don't want any other screen saver other than "Black screen" on a thin client anyway17:22
sbalneavAnd I know that one works :)17:22
jc2itYes this is true the screen does blank. The reason I was focusing on the screen saver is because I think it might lead to some of the other issues that are harder to describe17:24
sbalneavSometimes, opengl instructions don't go remotely across the network, resulting in X server resets, which will kick you back to a login prompt.17:25
jc2itso does this mean that the x.org log would track such an event?17:27
jc2iton the client17:27
jc2itor server17:27
sbalneavOn the client, usually17:29
sbalneavSometimes you can also get an error in the users $HOME/.xsession-errors17:29
Marie_untuhow can I change the usplash screen on the clients, I have already the usplash-theme.so17:45
Marie_untuI can change it sucessfully in the server, but I cant in the clients17:45
Marie_untuany idea??17:46
Marie_untuanybody out there???17:51
jc2itin /home/<usr>/.xsession-errors17:58
jc2itgnome-screensaver-preferences: Fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server 192.168.0.239:6.0.17:59
Marie_untuanyone around knows how the clients' usplash works????18:06
Marie_untuis anybody in here?? please at least say hi18:07
Marie_untuor just say, nope no idea, go away :) or something similar18:08
nubaeMarie_untu: still the same problem?18:24
Marie_untuheyyy18:27
Marie_untunot really18:27
Marie_untuthe kernel is updated sucessfully18:27
nubaewhat did u do to fix it?18:27
Marie_untunow i cant change the usplash on the client18:27
Marie_untuapt-get dist-upgrade in the chroot18:28
nubaeah yes...18:28

ubottuLaunchpad bug 274902 in ltsp "PULSE_SERVER not set for localapps" [Undecided,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/27490219:14
sbalneavBack from lunch19:59
sbalneavMarie_untu: You'd need to rebuild the initramfs in the chroot, then re-run ltsp-update-kernels20:00
stgrabersbalneav: btw, I filed bug 274902 as an Ubuntu bug but I guess it's something that'd need to go upstream as xrexecd.sh is an upstream script.20:50
