penhow do you use unzip to unzip individual files to individual folders?01:06
TSCDanI just upgraded from Hardy to Ibex on my laptop and for the most part it's ok.  There seems to be an issue with X11 sound though (through pulseaudio).  When I boot up, I get the login screen sound and the login sound as I log in, but after that, nada.  PA is running (according to grep).  I've tried manually loading the x11 module, but that gives me an error. $ pactl load-module module-x11-xsmp01:07

zurnpen: how many files in zip file?01:48
bruce89http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/intrepid/en/man1/unzip.html01:48

penzurn, that works, but I'm worried if the files in the archive changes...01:55

zurninstead of telling it to ignore all other files01:56
kindofabuzzHobbsee, thanks, but why did intrepid change the UUID?01:57
penzurn, ok01:57
zurnpen: that work, im just reading from the man file01:57

bruce89!uuid01:59
ubottuTo see a list of your devices/partitions and their corresponding UUID's, run this command in a !shell: « sudo blkid » (see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LibAtaForAtaDisks for the rationale behind the transition to UUID)01:59
kindofabuzzHobbsee, hmm, all i did was an update-manager -d to upgrade, it shouldn't have reformatted my swap part01:59
Hobbseekindofabuzz: that's what i would have thought01:59
kindofabuzzoh well, it's going now again, thanks02:00

smacfarlShould I report this against the kernel source package since it is hardware detection?02:36

DaSkreechThere is a terminal mode in the DVD not sure about the CD02:46
smacfarlSo isn't there some kind of standard xorg detection process or something that runs during a unix install? Wouldn't the live CD do something like a standard linux install?02:48
smacfarlgonna try safe mode and see if I can force an ati driver from inside.02:52
GreySimDoes anyone know if Nautilus spatial windows not saving their sizes/positions is a known bug, and if it's an Ubuntu bug or a GNOME one? I've looked in both bug trackers and didn't see anything, but I'm not well-versed in bug-hunting.03:10
* GreySim is running an up-to-date Intrepid as of a few hours ago.03:11
* DaSkreech is running a broken Ibex since yesterday morning03:13
DaSkreechAt least I'm trying to :(03:14
smacfarlSo I tried the live cd in safe mode. No difference. Live CD of 8.04 in the past safe mode did load correctly. I pressed f4 keyed down to safe mode and pressed enter.03:14
bobertdosGreySim: It doesn't hurt to report it, even if it does turn out to be redundant .03:14
bobertdosdaskreech: What version of the kernel are you running. I personally have concluded that 2.6.27-5 is a buggy update.03:15
DaSkreechsmacfarl: strange03:15
* GreySim has seen so many duplicate bugs that I didn't want to do that blindly, but after a bit more poking (maybe it's a Compiz problem), I will do just that. Thanks.03:15
DaSkreechbobertdos: Not sure I can't get that far03:15
DaSkreechbobertdos: I get a Grub Error 203:16
* bobertdos tries to think of what error 2 actually is...........03:16

smacfarlso is there a special command line option for running in safe mode?03:17
Alex_GaynorIs there any reason the "wireless networks" option would be grayed out when my wireless adpater is on(I don't see anything in the restricted drivers window for it, but I think there should be)03:17
bobertdosdaskreech: Do you have the LiveCD. The first thing I would do would be do compare fdisk with your menu.lst file.03:18
bobertdos*?03:18
DaSkreechThey look the same to me03:18
DaSkreechthough I wonder cause depending on the Disk I use my drive is sda or sdb03:19
GreySimDefinitely a Nautilus issue. Happens with Metacity as well. Will report after re-logging, just to be sure it's not a weird upgrade issue.03:19

darthanubisits been broken in 8.1003:22

darthanubisafter flash crashes in FF, PA dies for me until reboot03:23
darthanubisno matter my setup03:23
darthanubisvery frustrating, since I've used PA since Gutsy03:23
bobertdosdarthanubis: I'm using RC2. The repos are stuck on Beta 2.03:23
darthanubisthen how are you @RC2?03:24
bobertdosdarthanubis: Because I go directly to Adobe's labs.03:24
darthanubisoh, for flash03:25
bobertdosdaskreech: I'm not quite sure when it was first released.03:25
bobertdosdarthanubis: oh, yeah, sorry.........but you know, you might want to try it too03:26
bobertdosdanbh_intrepid: Yup, I've pretty much concluded that the kernel update is to blame for breaking Pulse. I reinstalled Intrepid to revert and it's perfect again, :p03:33
bobertdosdarthanubis: I don't know if I should report it though, because APT DID warn me that it was holding the update back.03:33

RAOFGuma: A couple of gig?04:27
wastrelsave as text or copy/paste04:27
RAOFGuma: It depends if you think you'll ever want to hibernate, of course.  If you do, you want your swap to be a substantial fraction of your physical memory (like 80% or more).04:28
GumaRAOF: I remember while back with RH distro you had to limit to 2G swap04:28
wgrantI remember back in the good old days when you had to pass mem=256MB if you had >128MiB of RAM.04:28
RAOFPossibly with i386?  The address space is pretty small there :)04:28
HewGuma: I'm running 2GB RAM and I have 0B swap :-) It's really up to you and what you will use the swap for04:28
GumaI am googling on this and there seems like a lot of confusion. Some people was not using swap @ all with that much RAM. Some saying that you have to if you will harbernate04:28
RAOFI presume that with 8GB you're running either x86-64 or the server kernel, in which case you should have no problems with huge swap partitions.04:29
Gumait is x86-6404:29
RAOFYou need swap to hibernate; that's where the data gets written to.04:30
Guma8.10 beta04:30
GumaSo should I have 8G swap to cover entire RAM?04:30
GumaOr 1.5 x RAM size04:30
Gumato give a little extra04:30
RAOF1.5 is probably far too much :)04:30
RAOF8G would be safe; I'd guess you could get away with 4GB or less and have fairly reliable hibernate.04:31
GumaSo 8G would be ok to hibernate. Does the entire RAM is written to swap on hibernate?04:31
RAOFKinda.04:31
Omoikane__wgrant I saved it as a .txt in my folder 'Nickolaus' as fix.txt and then typed chmod +x fix.txt04:32
Omoikane__is that correct?04:32
GumaI have 1.5 T HD. so 8G is not a problem04:32
RAOFHibernate first drops all non-dirty pages from RAM, then compresses the ram image on to disc.04:32
wgrantOmoikane__: That's fine.04:32
RAOFSo depending on your load it'll write substantially less that 8GB to disc.04:32
wgrantOmoikane__: Then sudo ./fix.txt04:32
wastrelhow do i make it turn bluetooth off and never bother me about it again?04:32
Gumaalso /boot 200Mb is enough on ubuntu? That is what I was using with Fedora04:33
wgrantOmoikane__: Actually, sudo python fix.txt04:33
* RAOF has 2GB RAM and consistently writes ~500MB to disc on hibernate04:33
Omoikane__wgrant okay, that did seem to fix the mute or the scroll.04:34
wgrantOmoikane__: Did, or didn't?04:34
Omoikane__wgrant didn't04:34
wgrantOmoikane__: Did you restart X?04:34
Omoikane__x-server?04:34
wgrantOmoikane__: Yes04:35
Omoikane__so just sudo x-server?04:35
Omoikane__err sudo restart x-server04:35
GumaAlso is reiserfs better than ext3. Or matter of preference? What do you guys choose from your experience?04:36
RAOFThere's basically nothing wrong with ext3.  I've used reiserfs before as well.04:36
wgrantOmoikane__: Just log out and in again.04:36
RAOFIt's a file system.  They basically all work :)04:36
wgrantReiserFS is much faster for some things.04:36

DASkreechhow do I know which is which?05:37
bobertdosI find it rather ironic that the Xine engine in K is more stable than Pulse.05:38
DanaGthis works: sudo blkid05:38
danbh_intrepid!blkid05:38
ubottuTo see a list of your devices/partitions and their corresponding UUID's, run this command in a !shell: « sudo blkid » (see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LibAtaForAtaDisks for the rationale behind the transition to UUID)05:38
DASkreechAh right of course I have a bunch of partitions duh05:39
danbh_intrepidI dont understand why you need sudo.  Seems to work fine without.  But maybe its because Im just looking at a single drive...05:39

DASkreechbobertdos: My drive comes up as a new /dev/ device everytime I boot. So What should I tell grub to avoid the Error 2?05:44
bobertdosWell, I'm just wondering if the device names match up properly.05:45
danbh_intrepidDASkreech: every time?  So, sometimes it works?05:45
DASkreechWell currently it's /dev/hdd05:45
DASkreechdanbh_intrepid: Hasn't yet since I installed ibex05:45
bobertdosAre you looking at sudo fdisk -l?05:46
danbh_intrepidDASkreech: what are the other ones it does?05:46
DASkreechYes05:46
DASkreech /dev/sda or /dev/sdb05:46
bobertdosWould you mind paste-bin-ing the output, please?05:47
DASkreechhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/54873/05:48
bobertdosdanbh_intrepid: Boy, I tell you, this all still very frustrating. Even though Pulse is improving, I'd say the "too many cooks" problem still prevails.05:48
danbh_intrepidbobertdos: heh, I think pulse was trying to reduce it to one "cook" so to speak.  It is kinda crazy, that linux is finally getting around to a unified sound framework, after all these years05:49
DanaGNew feature in PulseAudio 0.9.12: PulseAudio server has become a lazy bum... it's set to quit when idle.05:49
DanaGSo, you pause a gstreamer app.... and then the server quits.05:49
danbh_intrepidI guess it shows how server oriented the development has been maybe?05:50
DanaGAnd then you go to hit play again...... and bam, the app freezes.05:50
DanaGLovely feature!05:50
DanaGI mean, who the $CURSE would set such a thing?05:50
bobertdosdanbh_intrepid: definitely, but you know, Gnome seems to be "trying harder" than K. A lot of the K developers haven't latched onto the Pulse bandwagon yet.05:51
* DanaG ♥ PulseAudio....... when it works properly.05:51
DanaGAnd when it doesn't... I get quite angry at it.05:52
bobertdosdascreech: Okay, so you haven't even installed yet, is that right?05:52
DASkreechno I have05:53
bobertdosdaskreech: Okay then, would you be able to pastebin your menu.lst then?05:53
DASkreechhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/54875/05:56

bobertdosdaskreech: Well, things actually look okay, I wonder which disk it refers to when it says it doesn't exist.05:59
DASkreechas do I05:59
DASkreechI've heard that since Hardy if you have a Sata and a Pata drive on the same system you could get an Error 2on boot06:00
DASkreechI don't even have sata capabilty though06:00
DanaGjack|ass: what kind of network card?06:01
DanaGLook in /sys/class/leds06:01
DanaGIt's possible to change the behavior of LEDs on Broadcom and some Intel wifi cards, if not others.06:02
DanaG(those are the only two I've ever used.)06:02
jack|asshrm... and it's showing my network adapter twice.06:03
jack|asshmm06:03
bobertdosdascreech: There are various causes for grub error 2 it seems. Many have to do with the BIOS, apparently.06:04
jack|assDanaG: intel, and i'm playing with those led/triggers06:07
jack|assbut it doesn't seem inclined to let me turn it off.06:07
bobertdosdascreech: You know, I wonder if hdd means that drive is recognized as drive four (which in menu.lst would have to be hd(3..))06:07
jack|assah hah, got it06:08
jack|asswastrel: echo 0 > /sys/class/leds/iwl-phy0:radio/brightness06:09
DanaGACtually, you have to set 'trigger' to something else.06:09

bobertdosdanbh_intrepid: sorry, I just sent him off on a quest06:16
danbh_intrepidto reinstall?06:16
bobertdosdanbh_intrepid: no -- anyway, I suspect he does, otherwise his designations would be a lot different. My suggestion was that he change his menu.lst to use (hd3,0)06:17
jack|assso when i install nvidia-glx-177, dpkg-divert complains about nvidia-glx-new already having "diverted" the file the glx-177 package is trying to "divert."  What does that mean exactly?06:17
danbh_intrepidhe has 4 drives?06:17
RAOFjack|ass: That means that something is wierd; I thought nvidia-glx-new would get removed by glx-17706:18
bobertdosdanbh_intrepid: Well I don't think he has that many, but I know what happens to some people is that their BIOS gets weird, which causes the Ubuntu and grub designations to mismatch.06:18
jack|asshmm... apt doesn't show nvidia-glx-new as being an available package.  However, if i do a dpkg -l, I can see: rc nvidia-glx-new06:19
bobertdosdanbh_intrepid: He's getting Grub Error 2, which according to Google results, generally traces back to BIOS problems.06:19
danbh_intrepidbobertdos: how long will it take him to test your theory?06:19
bobertdosdanbh_intrepid: dunno06:20
danbh_intrepidbobertdos: hes just changing menu.lst and rebooting, right?06:20
bobertdosdanbh_intrepid: By the way, Gnome sucks for forcing me to use K, lol06:20
danbh_intrepidthats not too long06:20
danbh_intrepidbobertdos: how were you forced?06:20
bobertdosYeah, but I suppose if he discovers it works, he may try to configure his install.06:20
jack|asshm... can i tell dpkg to purge an uninstalled package that left config files behind?06:21
wastrelreinstall and purge06:21

jack|assit looks like it carried it over from hoary.06:22
danbh_intrepidsynaptic?06:22
jack|asswait, i think i got it06:22
bobertdosdanbh_intrepid: Well, okay, I was not forced. I attempted to upgrade to -5 again. As predicted, it broke Pulse. But then something occurred to me, that since a K startup sound was playing when I was starting up Gnome, that sound may still work in K.06:22
jack|assargh.06:23
gaminggeekhey my kernel just paniced06:23
gaminggeekis there anywhere that keeps a log?06:23
jack|asswell dpkg --purge got rid of it.  but that didn't fix the dpkg-divert.06:23
bobertdosdanbh_intrepid: and it turns out, it does :p06:23
danbh_intrepidbobertdos: thats kinda a strange storry  :P06:23

DaskreecHsdb06:32
DaskreecHdanbh_intrepid: mind if I reboot to try it?06:33
bobertdosgaminggeek: Well yeah, I think Phonon is the server Xine and Gstreamer provide the codecs, and ALSA provides the drivers, yup. That would mean that the problems I am having in Gnome are specific to Pulse.........06:33
danbh_intrepidDaskreecH: no, I don't mind06:33

bobertdosdanbh_intrepid: From a support perspective, one thing I've always hated about Ubuntu. Every time we think we've totally figured things out, the next release turns everything topsy-tervy again :p06:36
danbh_intrepidbobertdos: yeah, that seems true, but Im crossing my fingers that this really is the last of the xorg.conf change ups06:37

ToobazHello. Package drgeo is completely inusable in intrepid because of bug LP 257797. However, I just noticed it is probably not a drgeo source package's bug: the source used in Hardy and Debian unstable has only trivial differences, and recompiling package from debian's one still gives a buggy drgeo, while Hardy's and debian's binaries works perfect. So it's 1) a problem of something used in compiling drgeo (gcc?) or 2) a drgeo problem that never showed up beca08:45

mte_Hi.. On a forum I've heard that intrepid beta has fixed slow LAN transfers on realtek network cards from 8.04 so I upgraded. As soon as the upgrade was over I noticed quite a big increase in speed (3-4MB/s before, about 20MB/s after) but after a few updates and reboots it went down to 3-4. Any idea if this is still to be fixed or if this only happens to my pc?09:14
bugabundo_workmte_: is this via samba or SSH?09:16
mte_bugabundo_work: ssh09:17

SalzeI've had quite strange issues with ssh transfers, too. Sometimes it differs from 3-4 MB/s to 20 MB/s depending on with sides starts the transfer - with everything else being the same.09:18

ali1234radio only currently13:41
ali1234for me it doesn't work at all13:44
ali1234oh my mistake, it just freezes totem for 3 minutes when you turn the plugin on13:44
wgrantali1234: There's a bug on that. It's being worked on.13:46
ali1234hmm... i've a question. on the clean install i did on my laptop, rhythmbox has many many internet radio stations listed. but on the upgrade i did on my desktop it only has about 3. how can i transfer them all?13:47

DJonesLooking at the Intrepid upgrade last night, I had a warning that nvidia drivers weren't available yet, does that mean I'd be left using the "nv" driver until the final drivers are incorporated14:00
dmh65there arnt any drivers14:04
dmh65thats the problem14:04
dmh65xorg 7.414:05
dmh65they stop at 7.314:05
dmh65I've wondered what Ubuntu are thinking14:05
DJonesok, thanks, thats going to be a pain, I would guess that will be dealt with before final release14:06
wgrantdmh65: We're thinking that nvidia and AMD are bing stupid, I guess.14:06
dmh65how, they dont exist14:06
wgrantDJones: We can't do a thing until AMD and nvidia do.14:06
dmh65just the opensource14:06

ali1234hmm... what's my computer running then?14:07
wgrantdmh65: You cannot blame us for not letting proprietary vendors block new features.14:07
dmh65probably the opensource, read the topic abobe14:07
DJoneswgrant: I realise that, I'll make do with the opensource driver if needed14:07
dmh65*above14:07
dmh65The fglrx and two of the older nvidia binary drivers are not available for X.Org 7.4 yet, so users of these drivers will be automatically switched to the corresponding open source drivers.14:08

dmh65maybe they know something :)14:09
ali1234ah ok, yeah. when i upgraded my nvidia driver (version 177 i think) stopped working, but there were two other versions available so i just switched to one of those (173)14:09
wgrantali1234: 177 works fine.14:09
dmh65lucky you14:10
mc_abysslol14:10
dmh65I dont need the 3d but would be nice just to know its there14:10
dmh65I was amazed at Hardy on my first install, when it told me there were 3d drivers were waiting for me.  Brought a smile to my face14:11
DanaGCan open-source ATI at least do suspend-to-RAM?  When I was temporarily stuck on an NV17 laptop (needs 96 drivers), resuming from suspend gave me a blank screen until reboot.14:12
DJonesdmh65: I'm probably in the same position as you,I don't need 3D as far as I know, I'll maybe just upgrade and see if anything goes amiss14:12
DanaG.... and thus rendered suspend-to-ram entirely a moot point.14:12
mc_abyssi was amazed intrepid installed on my laptop when hardy wouldnt14:12

DanaGWith my next laptop, I'll be switching from NV back to ATI... it's partly a matter of principle.14:23
DanaGradeon and radeonhd > nv14:23
DanaGEven if fglrx is bad, I've had enough issues with nvidia in both Windows and Linux to make me not care if fglrx is bad.14:24
dmh65the ati driver was recently updated fpr xorg 7.3 I think, works superb in hardy, I have a hd2400 pro14:27
dmh65*for14:28
maek0if you want Compiz to work well then go for NVIDIA14:29
dmh65I only use minimal effects, so its not much of a problem14:29
dmh65I just like to know that I can use something if I have it14:30
dmh65works great in vista :)14:30
maek0dmh65, do you play back full screen video ?? Do you use full screen apps like GIMP ??14:30
dmh65I usually watch dvd etc in windows but yeah I use gimp14:30
dmh65and my screensaver a lot lol14:31
maek0well on ATI cards fullscreen video is crap14:31
dmh65amd have money problems apparently14:31
dmh65in Linux you mean14:32
maek0yep14:32
dmh65actually since the ati driver update I think things have vastly improved14:32
maek0on Linux .. NVIDIA are the most stable with video playback and compiz performance14:33
dmh65atlease for me it did14:33
DanaGGotta' remember the nvidia "weak substrate" issue as well... and all the coverup, and finger-pointing.14:34
maek0and lets face it on Linux the only reason you install graphics drivers is to enable Compiz14:34
dmh65yes, and the 3d screensavers14:34
dmh65the latter for me more so14:35
ali1234compiz... i cant get by without mouse wheel zooming any more14:35
DanaGThat reminds me... rss-glx screensavers are set by default to run at unlimited framerate, and without running 'nice'.14:35
dmh65games like Savage which is a great game for Linux dont like ati cards either which is a shame14:35
* DanaG does most, if not all, of his gaming in Windows.14:36
maek0ali1234, yeah I love being able to zoom up to anything on my desktop ... its great for graphics editing14:36
dmh65me too, steam user here14:36
DanaGUntil Wine supports surround sound... I'm sticking with native.14:36
ali1234it's also a lot more efficient for watching youtube videos fullscreen, rather than letting flash do the scaling14:37
maek0DanaG, same .. although I have a nice little 90 MB version of Windows for my gaming .. works great !14:37
dmh65I got a Raze Lycosa gaming keyboard yesterday, well cool, works in Ibex as well14:38
dmh65*razer14:38

sammywell i guess i can have wireless on intrepid and now nvidia or no wireless and nvidia in hardy16:54
sammythats a bummer16:54
DasEi1sammy: so you already have the answer, and as I said I don't know, if the offical nvidia-driver installs on xorg 7.416:55
sammyDasEil: tyvm for your time16:55
sammydoes anyone know if hardy will get the new kernel soon16:56
DasEi1Pici, do you now if offical nvidia-driver installs on xorg 7.4 ?16:56
DasEi1sammy: you can build your own if you really have (want) to, but then supporting will be hard16:57
PiciDasEi1: The official nvidia drivers are split into 3 packages, I'm not sure if all of them have an issue with 7.416:57
DasEi1sammy: if you got 30 min of concetration time, we could simply try Nvidia16:57
sammydaseil: i wouldnt know where to begin16:57
IdleOnewhy does installing celestia also want to install a ton of kde packages?16:57
sammyDasEil: i have the time16:58
DasEi1sammy: what do you need an extra/newer kernel then hardy for ?16:58
sammywireless16:58
sammyi have broadcom16:58
PiciIdleOne: Try installing celestia-gnome instead.16:58
DasEi1sammy: hardy supports it16:58
IdleOnePici: same thing16:58
PiciIdleOne: You mean you already tried it, or that they are the same thing?16:59
sammyDasEil: i have not been able to get wireless working in hardy16:59
DasEi1sammy: ok, will pm you for trying nvidia on xorg 7.416:59
sammyok16:59
IdleOnehmmm Pici nm. celestia-gnome does not bring in all the kde libs16:59
IdleOnethanks16:59
PiciIdleOne: celestia depends on: celestia-kde | celestia-gnome | celestia-glut, I guess its just trying to pull in celestia-kde instead of the more logical celestia-gnome.17:00
IdleOneis there not a check done to see what GUI is being used when installing a package?17:01

danbh_intrepid!root17:35
ubottuDo not try to guess the root password, that is impossible. Instead, realise the truth... there is no root password. Then you will see that it is 'sudo' that grants you access and not the root password. Look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo17:35

danbh_intrepidbobertdos: aaahhh, that would make sense.  Didnt know you were going for that17:37
danbh_intrepidbobertdos: which did you install first?17:38
bobertdosdanbh_intrepid: I wasn't, I just wanted Amarok. But then, I started discovering problems and eventually figured out it was K's fault, which lead me to test Kubuntu, which lead me to this conclusion.17:39
bobertdosdanbh_intrepid: I'm very linear in my problem solving strategies, lol!17:40
bobertdosdanbh_intrepid: The real tip-off was the fact that it was the startup sound from 3.5 that was playing in Gnome :p17:41
danbh_intrepidbobertdos: well, I think that just installing the meta packages doesnt really get you the full deal17:42
danbh_intrepidbobertdos: because allot meta dependencies are already solved by the previous meta package, so it makes sense it sounds get crossed, whatever, I think17:43
jim_phi guys. i get straing to the point. has enyone of you tried the nwe xorg v 1.5 with the opensource radeonhd driver? i have an 3850 and if ati wont correct it's fglrx, i either go with radeonhd or stay in 8.0417:43

ksbalaji_Oh! God! I have upgraded to 8.04 - I dont have a 8.04 disk. Better wait till month end.19:51
BrianFreytagjemark - I put 8.10 on my main machine (not my server.. that's still running 8.04), but I have to switch back to Windows any time I want to do anything that requires graphics19:51
BrianFreytagksbalaji_ - you can download the 8.04 disk from ubuntu.com19:51
jemarkBrianFreytag: that's a little inconvenient... ;)19:52
BrianFreytagjemark: a little :)19:52
ksbalaji_thanks! bye!19:52
maxb_I'm in the fglrx trap too. I was playing with a backport of the ati driver from intrepid this morning, and it was quite promising19:52
BrianFreytagksbalaji_- make sure you back up your data first!19:52
rippsksbalaji: why do you want to downgrade?19:52
maxb_I think it was perhaps not quite as good as fglrx, but I was able to watch a DVD adequately19:53
jemarkmaxb_: really?19:53
BrianFreytagmaxb_, I'm able to watch DVDs just fine with the vesa drivers *shrugs*19:53
jemarkmaxb_: im really waiting for the fglrx driver to be updated so i can install it in intrepid19:53
BrianFreytagmaxb_, maybe because I'm running a stupidly awesome card though :D19:54
maxb_Hmm, I don't remember if I ever tried vesa. But dvds on hardy were unwatchable with whatever the default driver was19:54
BrianFreytagparfu - have you found anything?19:54
maxb_I'm assuming it was ati19:54
jemarkBrianFreytag: with wide faces?19:54
BrianFreytagjemark - wide faces?  Like stretching?19:54
jemarkBrianFreytag: yeah, stretched bodies, etc ;)19:55
maxb_Speaking of which, I came here to ask if anyone's thought of putting backported ati/radeonhd from intrepid up on a PPA, so those of us hovering on hardy can see what's facing us if AMD don't get a move on19:55
BrianFreytagjemark - no... it was in perfect 16:919:55
jemarkBrianFreytag: i see... umm... u have a little more luck than me :)19:55
BrianFreytagmaxb_ - I believe in ATI... They truly feel the need to give good awesomness to us Linux users...19:56
BrianFreytagjemark - I'm assuming it's because my card is able to run the vesa drivers better than others?  I mean, the 4850 is a pretty hardcore card :)19:56
zzillezzwhy does adept installer still crashes on launch ?19:57
jemarkmaxb_: for my ATI 9700 mobility card, a ppa source would be ok, too... as long it support xorg 7.4. i don't like to downgrade to 7.319:57
zzillezzoops, sorry19:57
BrianFreytagzzillezz - because it don't like you? :)19:57
zzillezzit loads very slow :-)19:57
BrianFreytagmaxb_ : correction.. he's too lazy to ;)19:57
jemarkBrianFreytag: yes, probably... mine is not good with vesa19:57
zzillezzi guess i'll use the terminal19:57
BrianFreytagzzillezz - that's the way to go anywho :)19:57
zzillezzwell, no19:58
maxb_Well, I find the thought of trying to force hardy's xorg into an intrepid system quite perilous myself19:58
jemarkmaxb_: yes, also too lazy, indeed19:58
zzillezzaverage joe will click on add / remove software19:58
BrianFreytagzzillezz - very true19:58
jemarkmaxb_: we better wait then...19:58
biberaohi19:59
DasEi!hi19:59
ubottuHi! Welcome to #ubuntu+1!19:59
BrianFreytagmaxb_ Im' thinking about using synaptic to take care of it... screw the terminal on this one.  Just load all of the hardy repositories into synaptic and then unclick the ones in the intrepid, and clicking the ones in hardy19:59
maxb_I think I'm going to grab a DVD with some high-motion scenes, and do some fglrx vs. ati vs. radeonhd comparisons19:59
biberaohas nvidia been fixed?19:59
SkiddyFisk!kirby19:59
ubottuSorry, I don't know anything about kirby19:59
zzillezzwhy is firefox not included in kubuntu 8.10 ?19:59
BrianFreytagzzillezz - it isn't?  What's included?20:00

DasEi biberao: nope20:00

biberaohow can i make my ubuntu have a better performance?20:00
BrianFreytagjemark - like i said, if the 8.10 catalyst drivers don't support 7.4, I will do it20:00
BrianFreytagthose should be coming out in about a week or 220:00
zzillezzit's in regular ubuntu 8.1020:00
BrianFreytagbiberao - that depends20:00

Skiessidid I mention this yet? http://paste.servut.us/epyq20:01
zzillezzapt-get install firefox :)20:01
BrianFreytagzzillezz - simple enough, yes? :)20:01
maxb_"2 to 3 weeks" sounds like a better estimate on the fglrx to me, based on past release dates20:01
BrianFreytagbiberao - what kind of system are you running?  Specs?20:02
jemarkBrianFreytag: or good luck with this: http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Intrepid_Installation_Guide#Installing_the_restricted_drivers_manually20:02
BrianFreytagjemark... uh.. pass?20:02
BrianFreytagbrb.. smoke break20:02
jemarkBrianFreytag: hehe, yes, I pass... no use to upgrade to Intrepid and downgrade the xorg again...20:03
biberaoBrianFreytag p4 2.4 512ram20:03
VoltapleinHi -- what is the AT SPI Registry Wrapper?  Can I safely remove it from my session startup list?20:04
Skiessido I really have to mention that it doesn't look right?20:09
rippsVoltaplein: It's the Gnome Accessabilty Daemon, I belive. I don't know if it's okay to shut off. Turn it off manually, and if nothing appears to be affected, then you should be able to remove it from you Session.20:10
Skiessibecause I really think that 'dpkg --configure -a' translates to 'dpkg configures all'20:10
Skiessiit doesn't seem to do that, does it?20:10
rippsIs that some German?20:11
Skiessinwsf, yes #ubuntu-de20:11
Skiessianyway, should I go and ask in #debian?20:12
Voltapleinripps: thx.  I turned it off.  No ill effects thusfar20:13
BrianFreytagback20:13
Skiessithey have used it a bit longer than people in here? :o20:13
nwsfI've updated to Ubuntu 8.10, and I need the "deprecated" libs: libqt4-core and libqt4-gui. Do you know the sources for that?20:13
BrianFreytagnwsf: Ich sprecht englisch nicht ;)20:14
nwsfThat was false-german.20:14
BrianFreytagnwsf: no I don't... sorry20:14
BrianFreytagnwsf- I know20:14
nwsfAnd "Is that some German?" is false, too.20:15
BrianFreytagnwsf: I didn't say that20:15
nwsfI know about it.20:15
BrianFreytagbiberao - That should be sufficiently fast to run Ubuntu just fine... does it seem to drag for you or something?20:16
nwsfI want to use Skype on my 64bit-System and I have to force the Architecture..20:16
nwsfIs anybody using Skype with 64bit on Ubuntu 8.10?20:16
BrianFreytagnwsf: I'd say look for which repositories those packages are in with Hardy and link to it ;)20:16
aapzakare there bonobo problems atm?20:17
rippsI don't have any bonobo problems...20:17
aapzakI do :)20:18
aapzakbut its a pity its not a universal problem ;)20:18
nwsfBrianFreytag, how I can do that?20:18
Prettoffmpeg has no support for xdiv anymore?20:22
BrianFreytagnwsf: go to www.ubuntu.com, search for the packages... they should tell you which repository it is in20:23
BrianFreytagthen (if you're using gnome) go to Administration - Software Sources, and copy and paste those repository links in there20:24
BrianFreytagnwsf: they will be the same as the intrepid ones, but instead of intrepid/main, for example, it'll be hardy/main20:25
antoranzHI, guys! I'm having problems "lifting up" a slapd instance :-S20:25
antoranzUnrecognized database type (bdb)20:26
antoranzand then: slapd.conf: line 7: <database> failed init (bdb)20:26
antoranzany ideas?20:27
antoranzi installed libdb-dev (just in case)20:27
BrianFreytagantoranz... was just about to ask that20:27
BrianFreytaganotranz, I'd search synaptic... just simply bdb.. see what it renders20:28
antoranzwell... I just did, and got the same output20:28
antoranzok.... hold on... I'm going to an interview.20:28
BrianFreytagantoranz.. ok20:29
AyabaraJust started kde4, and I have both the gnome and kde network applets in my notification area20:30
rippsThere seems to be less people in here than the upgrade to 8.04. I guess Intrepid's beta isn't as buggy as Hardy's was.20:31
zzillezzdo i have to install all of the suggested packages when i want to install firefox ?20:34
fsufitch hi. i just upgraded to 8.10 beta, but i'm having several problems (what a surprise). For one, my tty prompts aren't showing on any of the ctrl-alt-f1-f6.20:34
fsufitch                  Two, Gnome will only start if i start it in failsafe mode. I removed my .gnome, .gnome2 , .gconf, etcetera. it still infroms me that compiz supposedly20:35
fsufitch                  crashed, when it's running fine. any ideas?20:35
bytor4232Hey, something wierd has happened.  I'm running Intrepid Beta, updated to today.  When I hit Fn and one of the brightness buttons, I get a wierd plus/minus character on my screen.20:36
CapaHUbuntu Intrepid will not boot. Whenever I boot my computer it stalls continually and I have to hit enter repeatedly to get it to boot up. I basically have to hold the enter key down for the 'loading' bar to move and for Ubuntu/Kubuntu to load. Does anyone have any ideas?20:41

simtrisHello guys.21:09
simtrisCould someone under 8.10 could tell me how munch memory is used by his X ?21:10
void^44m res21:11
simtrisErf, I always have more that 100M21:11
simtrisIs it a common issue or do I have something to solve ?21:12
Chousukesimtris: I think it depends on how much video ram you have.21:13
simtrisAround .. 021:13
simtrisI have a laptop :)21:13
Chousukehmmhmm21:14
simtrisChousuke:Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller21:14
ChousukeI suppose X would grab a few dozen megabytes for video from main RAM21:15
simtrisChousuke:it didn't in the lastest stable release21:15
Chousukethen something is broken :)21:16
simtrisChousuke: it's ... quite heavy for a light system21:16
ChousukeI don't really know how to debug X memory usage though21:16
void^it's a difficult science21:16
simtrisI see :)21:16
simtrisand someone there have this science ?21:17
simtrisor is there anyway to downgrade this part21:17
GibbaTheHutthiya, is network-manager hidden away somewhere, or is it a case of you get network-manager only if already connected to the network21:22
rippsIt still seems like Firefox is using too many resources, even without Flash.21:26
simtrisripps : hey I dont read the start of your issue but I have same problem21:27
simtrisripps: and for me it seem to be linked with Xorg21:27
rippsMore of a comment than an issue.21:28
simtrisripps: how much memory does this two soft are taking ?21:29
rippsDepends, sometimes it's running fine, other times it grinds my desktop to a halt.21:29
simtrisripps: (lets say the cold launch with 2 tabs without flash)21:29
rippsWell, right now mine is at 63mb with 4 tabs open. I found things work a little nicer with script-blocker installed21:31
simtrisripps: U find that expensive ? It's quite normal I think. I have around 110 M21:32
rippssimtris: No, not at all. I think that is perfect. I think the slowness comes from some kind of processing problem, not memory.21:33
KRFeh? how can i get the german language pack in kde4 in intrepid? i thought installing kde-l10n-de is enough?21:33
KRFstrings are only partly translated21:33
rippsDo the ubuntu devs compile firefox with Profile-Guided Optimization? I hear that really speeds up things like javascript.21:33
antoranzI didn't use a moduleload to load the bdb.la file21:34
BrianFreytagwb jemark21:39
jemarkBrianFreytag: thanks21:40
jemarkBrianFreytag: just downgraded to a lower kernel...21:41
jemarkBrianFreytag: the 2.6.24-19-generic21:41
BrianFreytagjemark... and?21:42
BrianFreytagjemark... did that do anything for you graphics card wise?21:42
jemarkBrianFreytag: the 2.6.24-21 gave a kernel panic with me iwl3945 driver... the backport which would solve this  is not yet released...21:42
jemarkBrianFreytag: no, nothing for my graphics card... ;)21:43
BrianFreytagjemark... booo :)21:43
jemarkBrianFreytag: yep... in intrepid there is still the same problem for the 3945 driver, so went back to the hardy kernel + backports21:44
cliechtii have upgraded my eeepc. good news is that suspend worked :-) the bad news is that it's still using the VESA driver.. and glxinfo crashes (segfault) on ctrl+c21:45
jemarkBrianFreytag: i was just trying..21:45
omniI'm trying to set up a web-only kiosk. I've used debian as the base, and I need a way to make the system reboot when X dies for a certain user (or when firefox dies for that user). I notice that ubuntu automatically reboots when you end your X session - can anyone explain how I can emulate this?21:46
jemarkomni: maybe use ubuntu?21:47
cliechtiomni: use ubunti with the new "guest" account feature ;-)  sorry i have no answer for your question21:47
omnithe machines this will be installed onto won't handle ubu, only 256mb ram21:48
jemarkcliechti: i: the guest feature is not for kiosk use...21:48
jemarkomni: i see, maybe xubunt works?21:49
cliechtijemark: yeah. i have not yet tried it. just read about it on the features page. but not storing anytthing sounds useful for kiosk usage21:49
BrianFreytagbrb21:50
jemarkcliechti: but you have the login a user first before you can go to a guest space...21:50
cliechtihm. whats the replacement for /etc/inittab?21:50
omnijemark: too sluggish, I need to use a raw deb with x-window-system-core and kdebase (not even full kde)21:50
cliechtiomni: you can also install ubuntu that way. there is the server installation where you start with a text console only, and grab what you want later21:51
rippsI'm trying the new Swiftweasel 3.0.3 PGO build to see if it's faster than the Firefox21:52
jemarkripps: good luck21:52
jemarkcliechti: i wish yo best of luck. i have to go... sorry that i couldn't help u further21:53
jemarkomni:  i wish yo best of luck. i have to go... sorry that i couldn't help u further21:54
cliechti:-)21:54
jemarkhehe :)21:54
rippsSo far it looks like Swiftweasel is working great. I just symlinked ~/.mozilla/firefox to ~/.sw3/swiftweasel, and all my firefox settings are shared.22:08
cliechtihow do i find out what X took for a driver?22:10
RAOFcliechti: grep -i driver /var/log/Xorg.0.log22:11
cliechtiRAOF: thanks. hm it looks like it correctly detecting i810. but it fails to load glx22:12
RAOFcliechti: Want to pastebin the file?22:13
cliechtiRAOF: hm, skimming through it. there is not much useful. the line with the error says "failed to init GLX (nvidia x driver not found)".. thats right its not nvidia, its i81022:15
cliechtisetting the size to 211x126 is also funny... but that no problem as in the end it's getting the correct resolution :-)22:16
hardyHi, I just updated my system and now when I boot I have black screen. No login manager, what can I do please?22:20
hardyany one here faced the same problem?22:22
tanathi just updated & rebooted, and the network manager says i have no connection22:22
tanathalso says i have an eth1, which i don't22:22
moreatiA slightly out one. Running Intrepid beta, is gnome-terminal meant to be slightly translucent, or have I configured something and forgotten?22:22
hardytanath: at least you can login to your X ;)22:23
tanathhardy, heh22:23
cliechtihardy: not the same, but 3D isnt working anymore here.  and you don't get a text mode error message?22:23
hardyany one here with an ati card?22:23
tanathme...22:23
hardycliechti: no I am getting nothing just a black screen22:23
hardytanath: and you updated and still can log to your X?22:24
cliechtitanath: statically configured in /etc/network/interfaces?22:24
tanathhardy, yeah. you getting nothing but a black screen when booting?22:24
cliechtihardy: ctrl+alt+1 doesnt give you a text console?22:24
hardytanath: yes22:24
tanathcliechti, shouldn't be22:24
hardycliechti: yes it gives me a text console from which I am speaking to you now22:24
tanathhardy, does the login screen come up if you leave it to fully boot?22:24
hardytanath: no22:24
cliechtihardy: less /var/log/Xorg.0.log :-)22:25
hardytanath: in F7 no but I can go to Alt+F1 e.g22:25
hardycliechti: I did but what can I look for?22:25
giucav79hi who had the character problem with intrepid kubuntu ?22:25
tanathhardy, hardy this may work anyway. install v86d22:26
cliechtitanath: i just read in the beta info, that statically configured entries could be a problem. i myself had a problem that the network manager was removed on upgrade.. but now it works fine22:26
rippscliechti: I had this problem too. I simply removed any mention of vga=xxx from config.22:26
tanathcliechti, i'm using dhcp22:26
rippscliechti: by config, i mean /boot/grub/menu.lst22:26
tanathhardy, i had a similar prob, and someone told me to install that, and it fixed it. should be a dependency, but isn't22:27
cliechtitanath: yeah, but my /etc/network/interfaces has just "lo" in it, no other interface22:27
cliechtiripps: for the GLX error? (3 topics at the same time now :-)22:28
tanathcliechti, http://pastebin.ca/122213122:28
RAOFcliechti: Has anyone helped you yet?  That means you've accidentally installed a nvidia-glx- package, probably nvidia-glx-173 (which got pulled in by mistake at some point).22:29
hardyripps: I don't have that line22:29
RAOFcliechti: Remove all the nvidia-glx-* packages, and 3d will work again.22:29
cliechtitanath: try to comment out the iface lines for eth0 and eth1, as well as the auto line at the end. the network manager should find these interfaces by its own22:29
hardytanath: I installed it now. can I try it without booting?22:29
tanathhardy, i think you need to reboot for v86d to work22:30
hardytanath: ok I will do and see you again soon ... thanks for your care22:30
tanathcliechti, it's weird. there shouldn't be a line there for eth1. it doesn't exist22:30
tanathbut i'll figure this out later. gotta go. thanks22:31
cliechtiRAOF: i found someone with a similar problem where that helped too. well... the nvidia packages must have been installed with the dist-upgrade from 8.04 to 8.10. it was working fine bfore the upgrade. anyway.. trying..22:31
cliechtiweird, synaptics shows no hit when searching for nvidia..22:32
cliechtiok, that was some weird feature of normal search + quicksearch22:33

RAOFnoelferreira: Right now, assuming you've got a card newer than a geforce 4.22:37

kane77hi, did anyone notice suspend stopped working? it worked flawlessly in alpha, now it does not work anymore..22:53
cliechtikane77: au contraire, it worked for the 1st time on the eeepc. several times and without problems :-)22:54
kane77hmm.. weird, for me it worked almost good in hardy (if I pressed keys for few seconds then it did wake up) in intrepid it worked like magic..22:55

fsufitchedgy: i really think xorg.conf is the way to go here though23:12
fsufitchi dunno, somebody more knowledgeable than me on X with radeon can help23:12
fabiohmm it seems like network-manager itself is working, just the applet is borken23:12
edgyfsufitch: np, thanks a lot for the hints23:13
fsufitchedgy: no prob23:13
ninjafuryGuys, what sound server does Kubuntu Ibex use by default?23:13
motzwhat modes must i write in xorg.conf for display23:18
motzwont start wo23:18
cliechtinone, normally23:18
motzhmm solved problem with hybrid ati23:19
motzmaybe because of vesa mode?23:19
ninjafuryhas anyone been using pulseAudio? How stable is it?23:19
motzxserver gives error because of no modes in conf and starts in shell   no gui23:19
wgrantedgy: radeonhd will be used if it is installed. It's a bug that it's installed by default, and it is being fixed.23:20
cliechtininjafury: me has no problem with pulse audio on hardy23:20
wgrantmotz: What happens if you move your xorg.conf somewhere else?23:20
wgrantninjafury: Hardy and Intrepid use it by default.23:20
edgywgrant: it's not fixed23:20
wgrantedgy: It is being fixed. A fix is in git.23:20
wgrantedgy: Just remove xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd23:20
ninjafurywgrant: even when using KDE4?23:20
wgrantninjafury: No - wouldn't that use Phonon?23:21
wgrantI'm not a KDE person any more, however.23:21
ninjafurywgrant: thats what I thought. Is there an advantage to switching from Phonon to Pulse?23:21
RAOFEINVALID23:21
wgrantninjafury: Yes - avoiding NIH23:21
wgrantRAOF: Hm?23:22
motzthink then he makes an  new empty default ones23:22
RAOFWell, you don't "switch" from Phonon to Pulse - Phonon is an extra layer over the top of everything else.23:22
wgrantmotz: No.23:22
RAOFAs I undersand it, at least.23:22
edgywgrant: yes I did and it solved my problem but I didn't understand the issue because xorg install all those drivers whether needed or not and choose one depending on what?23:22
wgrantAmpelbein: I thought it was like a horrible combination of GStreamer and PulseAudio.23:22
ninjafurywgrant: sorry, what is NIH?23:22
RAOFIt's not actually a sound server - it's an abstraction of a multimedia framework :)23:22
wgrantninjafury: Not Invented Here syndrome.23:22
motzshould i try?23:23
wgrantmotz: You should.23:23
RAOFI don't _think_ it contains a sound server :)23:23
motzmove to root ?23:23
wgrantedgy: There is an order in which drivers are tried if there are multiple available.23:23
wgrantmotz: move it to xorg.conf.old or similar.23:23
motzOK23:23
edgywgrant: exactly my question is where is this order?23:23
motzdunno how to   , with chmod gg23:24
wgrantedgy: radeonhd is greater than radeon.23:24
motz-rename ?23:24
wgrantI don't quite know where it is all defined.23:24
edgywgrant: is this hard coded?23:25
wgrantmotz: sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf{,old}23:25
wgrantedgy: Likely.23:25
motzok23:25
edgywgrant: ok thanks23:25
cliechtiwgrant: you missed a "." in that command line ;-) -- nice, did not know that trick23:26
wgrantcliechti: So I did, though it won't break anything.23:27
cliechtii know23:27
cliechti:-)23:27

KenBW2is Intrepid a compelling upgrade?23:32
BrianFreytagKenBW2: depends on what you consider compelling... if you're not afraid that some things will inevitably break, I'd definitely go for it23:32
gregortotem is freezed when opening with and without specific file(s), how can i help you, to solve the problem?23:33
KenBW2well, im a tad upset about the lack of new theme,, but i mean will i notice a few good things changed (i wasnt overamazed by Hardy)23:33
Memo_I was a little upset that Hardy didn't learn how to take my trash out for pick-up.23:35
=== freepro|away is now known as freepro
KenBW2youre saying im expecting too much from a 6-monthly upgrade?23:35
BrianFreytagKenBW2: eh... wait till Ubuntu 9.  It will shock and awe.  This is just an upgrade23:35
motzwgrant why cant i just put in the modes?23:36
wgrantgregor: That's due to the BBC plugin - you can disable it for now, but it's being worked on.23:36
wgrantmotz: Because we need to work out why it doesn't work by default.23:36
KenBW2wgrant: i read about the BBC plugin - is it to do with iPlayer?23:37
motzis it normal that they new conf is so empty`?23:37
wgrantmotz: Yes - you don't need a conf at all.23:37
wgrantmotz: X is meant to autodetect everything.23:37
motznormaly ;)23:37
wgrantKenBW2: I think it might be related, but I've just glanced at it.23:37
wgrantmotz: And if it doesn't, we need a bug filed so we can fix it.23:38
motzok23:38
motzintrpid was first confust about ati hybrid crossfire ;)23:38
motzdonno  witch is primary...23:38
gregorwgrant: /home/<username>/.gconf/apps/totem/plugins/bbc/%gconf.xml changed from true to false, but totem is freezing again..23:40
BrianFreytaguse VLC23:41
wgrantgregor: It should unfreeze after a few minutes - disable it using the GUI and see if that works.23:42
wgrantBrianFreytag: Not a solution.23:42
gregorwgrant, works, thanks :)23:45

tonyyarussoSo, my system has apparently decided that it's going to suspend after 15 minutes of inactivity, even though I don't have such a directive configured.  Anyone know why and how to prevent this?  (I'm talking about a laptop but while on AC power, btw.)23:58
