sommeralyawn: you can use another mta like ssmtp or postfix02:19
alyawnthat is, email me at an external address02:20
alyawnis one more ubuntu-y than others?02:20
sommerssmtp is very lightweight it needs to send messages to a "mail hub", so ya it can send to an outside address02:21

draven1005I'm having a really... really strange problem and was hoping someone could help.  I just built a new server with 6.06.  From the server, I can ping anything on my network.  However, if I go to a machine that I did not try to ping from the server, the requests time out.  As soon as I ping that machine from the server (which works), then the other machine can start to ping the server.14:08
draven1005i've never seen anything like this before and i dont understand whats happening.14:08

kirklandmathiaz: basically, i ported a patch that existed for virt-manager to qemu and the qemu inside of our kvm package19:36
mathiazkirkland: right - what was the problem?19:37
kirklandmathiaz: by virt-manager, i mean gtk-vnc19:37

kirklandmathiaz: the thread had left it sort of "open"20:14
kirklandmathiaz: thanks for reminding me to do that ;-)20:15
kirklandi had been meaning too20:15
mathiazkirkland: so you've fixed both qemu and kvm?20:16
kirklandmathiaz: yes20:16
kirklandmathiaz: there's a qemu package in universe, which i patched and pushed out20:17
kirklandmathiaz: and there's a qemu that's internal to our kvm package20:17
kirklandmathiaz: i don't entirely understand why we did it that way20:17
kirklandmathiaz: but it's been patched in all 3 places20:18
mathiazkirkland: http://paste.ubuntu.com/55094/ <- is that a good overview ?20:18
kirklandmathiaz: you might want to mention gtk-vnc, which is what virt-manager uses20:21
kirklandmathiaz: that's where the original patch came from20:21
kirklandmathiaz: i ported to kvm/qemu20:21
mathiazkirkland: bug 279754 - we were just dicussing that in the meeting this morning20:34
uvirtbot`Launchpad bug 279754 in kvm "Intrepid fails to install onto virtio block device" [Undecided,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/27975420:35
kirklandmathiaz: how do you install on a virtio device?20:39
kirklandmathiaz: i always install to a plain image file20:40
mathiazkirkland: when you define your root disk in libvirt you can set the bus attribute to virtio20:42
mathiazkirkland: http://libvirt.org/formatdomain.html#elementsDisks20:43
mathiazkirkland: when specifying the target device - you can set the bus to virtio20:43
mathiazkirkland: in which case your device will be seen as /dev/vda in your guest.20:44
mathiazkirkland: you can do the same with a network device and set it to use virtnet20:44
kirklandmathiaz: through the virt-manager wizard?20:50
mathiazkirkland: hm - I don't think so20:51
mathiazkirkland: I'm using virsh to create the vm definition20:51
mathiazkirkland: I think that's what we pulled out for hardy - the ability to set virtio as an option in virt-manager20:51
mathiazkirkland: although I'm not sure exactly.20:52
kirklandmathiaz: okay, i don't use virsh...  what are the commands to create a virtio disk?20:52
mathiazkirkland: the easiest way is to dump the guest configuration with the dumpxml command20:52
mathiazkirkland: virsh dumpxml name-of-guest20:52
mathiazkirkland: then edit the xml file20:52
mathiazkirkland: and redefine the guest with the define command20:53
mathiazkirkland: virsh define name-of-guest.xml20:53
kirklandmathiaz: hmm, i must not be asking the right question....20:53
kirklandmathiaz: when i create a virtual machine, i do everything from the command line, and there are just two steps20:53
kirklandmathiaz: qemu-img create20:53
kirklandmathiaz: kvm -hda foo.img20:54
mathiazkirkland: hm - I don't know then.20:54
mathiazkirkland: I'm using libvirt to manage the kvm machines20:54
mathiazkirkland: there is probably a switch somewhere to say that it should use a virtio driver20:55
mathiazkirkland: -drive file=/dev/ubuntu/vm_t-dovecot,if=virtio20:56
mathiazkirkland: ^^ that seems to be the option to attach a drive with virtio in kvm20:57
kirklandmathiaz: how did you create /dev/ubuntu/vm_t-dovecot ?20:58
mathiazkirkland: it's an lvm snapshot20:58
kirklandmathiaz: how do you create that20:59
mathiazkirkland: you can use a normal lv also20:59
mathiazkirkland: with the lvcreate command21:00
mathiazkirkland: may be you cannot use virtio when you're using files - only if you're using a device on the host.21:00
kirklandmathiaz: okay, i'll need to set up a new intrepid host with LVM then21:01
kirklandmathiaz: it'll either be late tonight or tomorrow before i can reinstall a test machine here with LVM21:12

RediXeI am using ACL to set group and permissions when a new file or directory is created but how can I get the group and permissions set when a file is saved to the directory?21:28
ivoksRediXe: saving file = creating file21:35
RediXeivoks: if I right click and say new file it's fine. If I scan in something and hit file save the permissions are not the same21:36
juakhello, need help with iptables missing libs21:36
ivoksRediXe: you have to change permissions on existing files21:36
juakon default installation of hardy server, and trying to use the ROUTE modules it fails with "iptables v1.3.8: Couldn't load target `ROUTE':/lib/iptables/libipt_ROUTE.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory"21:37
RediXeivoks: ? Right now we run a script after saving a file to the directory that changes the owner/group and sets permissions. It does it recursively.21:38
ivoksroute?21:38
RediXeivoks: Without that script the newly saved file is set as the user:user instead of user:mygroup and has read only rights.21:39
ivoksRediXe: are you talking about ACL or normal unix permissions?21:39
juakyes, the 'route' iptables jump target21:40
RediXeivoks: I used ACL to have it auto set the group and permission for me. ( setfacl -dm g:escrow:rwx /home/common/ )    ... I need the files placed in /home/common to have the group escrow with rwx no matter how that file is placed in that directory21:41
ivoksRediXe: you are mixing ACL with classic user/group permissions21:43
ivoksRediXe: if you set ACL -dm for a group21:43
ivoks(btw, you should do -Rdm)21:43
ivoksthen you are setting ACL for a group, and the group in classic sense is irrelevant21:44
RediXeivoks: I'm not very good at this user/group thing :P    Is it possible to have the file's that are placed in /home/common to have there group set to escrow and to have the group permission of rwx automatically or do we have to manually change the group and permissions by hand?21:47
ivoksRediXe: you can have automaticaly, yes21:48
ivoksRediXe: if that's an SMB/CIFS share, you could force group in smb.conf21:48
RediXeivoks: the /home/common is being shared with sshfs to other employees21:49
ivokseh21:49
ivoksi don't know about that filesystem21:50
ivoksbut you could fix that on lower level21:50
ivoksexample:21:50

ivoks# chmod 3775 /tmp/TEST21:50
ivoks# chown root:users /tmp/TEST21:51
ivoks$ touch /tmp/TEST/bla21:51
ivoksif user is member of users group, the file would be owned by users group21:51
ivokseven tough it's primary group is something else21:52
ivoksfor that you don't need ACLs21:52
ivoksso...21:52
ivokschmod 3775 /home/common21:52
ivokschown root:escrow /home/common21:53
ivoksall of your users need to be members of escrow group for this to work21:53
RediXeivoks: remove the ACL i have on it?21:53
RediXeivoks: The users are part of escrow21:53

ivokseach user has an umask value22:05
ivoksif that value is 027, then all files created would be 75022:05
ivoksif umask is 007, then all files would be 77022:05
RediXeHow do I find the umask value?22:06
ivoksin ~/.profile22:06
ivoksRediXe: are those ubuntu clients?22:06
RediXeivoks: yes - ubuntu server and clients22:07
RediXewell xubuntu clients22:07
ivoksRediXe: then change on each client machine /etc/profile22:07
ivoksRediXe: at the end of the file, there's umask 022, change it to 00222:07
ivoksRediXe: another option is to check options for sshfs22:07
ivoksRediXe: maybe it is possible to force permissions22:08
RediXeivoks: I really have no idea - my boss set up the sshfs and said here is where I'm at and this is where I want to be22:09
ivoksRediXe: have you tried mounting with option gid=escrow?22:11
ivoksor, even better22:11
ivoksgid=escrow,umask=00222:11
ivoksthat should work22:11
RediXeivoks: changing the umask in /etc/profile from 022 to 002 didn't change the permission22:11
ivoksRediXe: it didn't change on existing files22:12
RediXeDid that on the client machine22:12
RediXeWell I went in there and saved a new file to check22:12
ivoksuser should logout and log in again also22:12
