albuntuok i can say that i managed to make intrepid work00:01
albuntuand now i am using it :)00:01
karthur26is the ibex install supposed to be just text mode?00:04
macokarthur26: its not supposed to be a command prompt. there is a text install on the alternate cd, but even that's not command prompt00:08
karthur26maco: i think it's because i had previous installs of ubuntu on it.  is there a way to just wipe the drive?00:10
mike-solidushey, i just upgraded kubuntu to the beta and i have no window decorations in kde 400:13
tacosarecoolhello00:13
macokarthur26: if the first thing it did was go to a command prompt, i guarantee that's not the problem00:13
macokarthur26: the live cd has nothing to do with the hard drive00:13
tacosarecoolmaco00:14
macotacosarecool: what?00:14
tacosarecoolI sorta installed Ibex the wrong way00:14
macoi dont know what that means00:14
macoi installed it in a vm by using ubuntu-vm-builder to install hardy then did an upgrade. u-v-b for hardy doesnt allow intrepid installs -_-00:15
mike-solidusany idea how to get window borders back? i cant control anything about my windows00:15
karthur26maco: the first thing was it went to the live cd and i selected the language.  and then i selected 'install ubuntu'... and then it goes into a command prompt00:15
tacosarecoolI only wanted to keep kde 3 but that part is ok I like kde4 now but I only meant to add the mirror it worked fine then I wanted to see what would happen if I check unsupported updates00:15
macokarthur26: ok thats broken.00:15
macokarthur26: how about, can you go to the option to run the live cd and see if that works? or check for defects?00:15
karthur26maco: the cd is broken?  i tried with a kubuntu cd as well and it had the same behavior00:15
karthur26maco: ok, let me try that00:16
macokarthur26: i mean the image has some lack of support for your computer, and that's brokenness00:16
freaky[t]hi all i got a problem. everytime i click on a URL in konversation it opens quanta can someone help me? oO00:17
karthur26maco: i was able to install a previous build of ibex with no problem00:17
macokarthur26: ok, so something broke since then00:17
freaky[t]it should open firefox - i've set that as the default app for URLs00:17
macokarthur26: is it sending you to busybox or dash or something?00:18
karthur26maco: i'm not sure what busybox / dash is.  all i get is the ubuntu logo with sliding bar for a minute,a nd then it becomes the prompt at ubuntu@ubuntu00:20
macoit doesnt say anything above the prompt?00:21
albuntueven if i had some problems upgrading from what i see until now everything is ok for me00:21
karthur26it does, it says like the kernel that's loaded 2.6.27-4-generic... and then some text about no warranty / access official documents... and then the prompt00:23
macokarthur26: and that happens with ubuntu 8.10 beta and kubuntu 8.10 beta00:23
maco?00:23
karthur26maco: yep.  i have no idea whats going on.00:23
karthur26maco: it looks like it was doing *something*.  it takes like 2-3 minutes before getting to that prompt00:24
macokarthur26: id say file a bug with the output of "lspci"00:24
albuntucan anyone tell me why my tray icons come with a black background different from the grey one of the tray ?00:24
karthur26sigh, should have gotten an older laptop00:25
karthur26thanks a lot maco00:25
bruce89albuntu: compiz's broken00:28

albuntubruce89 : what about the hardy repos. i have activated them but i cant find the extragear-plasma package01:19

bruce89danbh_intrepid: that's a new one01:32
QVjaxdahl: i believe the installer does the right thing, i don't remember doing anything special getting flash to work on my amd64 for ibex01:32
jaxdahlok, going to try the adobe site01:32
bruce89why do people call it Ibex?01:33
QVmy guess is it is shorter than Intrepid01:33

bruce89danbh_intrepid: yes01:40

bruce89GNOME Display Manager01:40
chamunksahh well that works too01:40
chamunkslol01:40
danbh_intrepidchamunks: so, you want to use transmission, without gnome, just over a web interface?01:40
bruce89coincidence01:40
chamunksthat would be wonderful because i've been using torrentflux but its kindof bloaty01:40
chamunksand buggy01:41
danbh_intrepidchamunks: I don't see how you could use tranmission at all without the GUI.  There doesnt seem to be many command line options.  I suspect you need a different route01:41
chamunksdanbh_intrepid: well im just so frustrated because i can get it running on a virtualmachine01:42

danbh_intrepidchamunks: how do you enable clutch via cli?/01:46
chamunkswell afaik once its installed it installs a /etc/init.d/clutch   boot script01:47
DanaGRAOF: sorry about not answering about the autoconf earlier... I had to run off to class.01:47
albuntuhow can i install all the data of kde 4 for example amarok 2 , etc01:47
chamunksso that leaves it running all the time but for some reason its not starting the transmission-daemon01:47
chamunksAs shown in my screenshot up there01:48
bruce89albuntu: what do you mean? The programs would be installed by kubuntu-desktop01:48
danbh_intrepidchamunks: well, it only works when I actually have transmission open01:49
albuntubruce89 : my amarok version is old. it is not version 201:49
RAOFalbuntu: I don't think amarok 2 is in the standard Intrepid repositories, but it might be.01:50
chamunksAccording to my repo's you can still install clutch as a separate package01:50
chamunksdanbh_intrepid: so if you so desired you could play around with that01:50
bruce89RAOF: looks like it01:50
RAOFOn the basis that it's not actually released yet, and the Kubuntu guys have enough work without managing amarok2 bugs ;)01:51
bsnideri don't know wh at the heck is wrong with amarok 1.401:52
bsniderit works fine01:52
DanaGThat br0 item in NetworkManager is new.01:52
DanaGIt never used to show up to confuse things.01:52
bsniderbr001:52
bsniderwhere is that?01:52
danbh_intrepidchamunks: It looks like clutch is already part of transmission01:53
danbh_intrepidchamunks: maybe you should just uninstall clutch, and have the transmission-daemon set to start on startup, however thats done01:53
chamunksmaybe they still provide it as a separate install for people in my situation.01:53
* bruce89 is surprised that WebKit is used in GIMP in Intrepid01:54
chamunksIll poke around with it a bit later i suppose i should go tend to my social life before the day is completely over and donated to these problems.01:54

chamunksdanbh_intrepid: i appreciate the attempt01:57
DanaGI've set up a bridge interface for any VMs I run.01:57
chamunksdanbh_intrepid: im just hitting a wall and its just upsetting01:57
DanaGIt's behind NAT, using dnsmasq to give out DHCP and DNS.01:57
DanaGIt's a static config in the Interfaces file.01:57
danbh_intrepidchamunks: well, clutch is not in debian.  I still think the way to go is run transmission daemon, forget about clutch.  I bet its in intrepid by mistake.01:58
albuntuanyone heard about this plasmoid error ? There was an error loading data providers.01:58
chamunksdanbh_intrepid: This could be the case for sure thats probably why im having issues but its all still giving me a headach ill ttyl thanks for your time.02:00
DanaGI notice a distinct lack of options to select WHAT interface a particular config applies to.02:01

RAOFbsnider: You mean the upstream xorg patch that automatically selected the nvidia driver that then got reverted?02:26
RAOFalbuntu: So, let's try the proper way.  System->Administration->Hardware Drivers.02:26
bsniderRAOF, yes and airlie (i think it was him) specifically said the patch should be applied by the distros02:27

albuntunothing inside :S02:27
RAOFalbuntu: Right.  So, let's go to System->Administrtation->Hardware Drivers02:27
albuntuRAOF : i tried and if i choose one of them and click activate they are marked in gray and i cant choose anymore02:28
albuntuwhat is the manual way to install them02:29
RAOFalbuntu: That suggests that there's probably a dialog box waiting for you to enter your password.02:29
albuntuRAOF : no box displayed02:30
RAOFThere _should_ be a dialog saying "System policy requires authentication before activating/deactivating drivers"02:31
crdlbbsnider: I believe he said that if anyone should apply it, it should be the distros, not that he actually recommended that02:31
bsniderthat's not a recommendation?02:31

RAOFalbuntu: Aha.  Well, that's a bug :)02:34
albuntuthat means ?02:35
RAOFalbuntu: So, what nvidia card do you have.02:35
RAOFThat means that the drivers manager is broken for you :)02:35
albuntugeforce go 740002:35
albuntuwhy would it be that i have a broken drivers manager ??02:35
RAOFRight.  So, to manually install the drivers you'd want to install the 'nvidia-glx-177' package.02:35
RAOFalbuntu: I don't know.  I'd suggest filing a bug.  Does Apport pop up and offer to file a bug for you?02:36
albuntunope02:36
RAOFHeh.  Bug in the bug reporter :)02:36
albuntuyeah i had some of them during the upgrade02:36
albuntui restarted and i had to finish the upgrade from the failsafe :)02:36
albuntuso you say i can install the nvidia-glx-177 ?02:37
tundrayeti311how can i determine what processes or devices are using a specific module?02:37
albuntuRAOF : it says nvidia-glx-177 is already the newest version.02:37

RAOFl337ingDisorder: What hard work?02:40
l337ingDisorderRAOF: glipper was working great for a few days after you fixed the libffi4 dependency but since yesterday's updates it's been crashing upon bootup almost every time (but not EVERY time, interestingly enough)02:40
alex_mayorgaRAOF: is g-do bundled on intrepid?02:40
albuntubsnider : this one http://pastebin.com/f43bc5054 ?02:41

bsnideralbuntu, http://paste.ubuntu.com/55473/02:41
bsniderthat one works for me02:41
RAOFalex_mayorga: If by "bundled", you mean "in Universe", then yes.  If by "bundled" you mean "in the default install", then no.02:41
RAOFl337ingDisorder: Heh.  File a bug; that one's not my fault! :)02:41
albuntubsnider : going to try02:42
alex_mayorgaRAOF: bundled for me is "in the default install", but thanks on reminding me of gnome-do02:42
albunturestarting x to see what happens now02:43
* danbh_intrepid loves gnome-do02:43
joshualuggh sharing files/ mounting .vdi for virutalbox is really hard02:43

bsnidergnome-do is awesome02:43
bsniderit's revolutionary02:43
Scorcherdoes an1 know if the new network manager fixs the problem with connecting to wireless repeaters?02:43
danbh_intrepidbsnider: did you notice the icon change?  or am I just crazy02:43
alex_mayorgaRAOF: what about pulse audio, is it bundled now?02:43
bsniderwhat icon change?02:44
RAOFYes; has been since Hardy.02:44
bsnidericon change in what?02:44
wtgeebsnider, danbh_intrepid: I have had a hard time 'getting' gnome-do and quicksilver.02:44
wtgeeI noticed the icon change today02:44
Alex_GaynorI just turned on my wireless card(it's an intel 4965) and nothing is showing up in the network manager, what can I do to make sure it is set up right?02:44
emet!info moonlight-plugin-mozilla02:44
ubottuPackage moonlight-plugin-mozilla does not exist in intrepid02:44
ScorcherRAOF, was that to my question?02:44
danbh_intrepidbsnider: gnome-do,  it used to be a set of gears, and now its like a flower02:44
cup0spamok02:45
Alex_GaynorThat's not a flow02:45

Alex_Gaynorit's a single gear02:45
cup0spamasking google, etc02:45
cup0spamwtf cant i browse the network?02:45
alex_mayorgaI think I shouldn't be running Volume Applet 2.24.0.1 on Intrepid, right?02:45
bsniderdanbh_intrepid, doesn't make any difference to me, i run it without the systray icon02:45
cup0spami did a fresh install of ibex, then reverted back to hardy02:45
danbh_intrepidwtgee: well, so far, gnome-do is like the firefox address bar, it autosearches out commands as you type them in02:45
l337ingDisorderraof: unfortunately it doesn't leave a crash report but I'll file a generic bug.. was hoping you may have heard something about it having been the last to work on it but alas ;)02:45

wtgeedanbh_intrepid: Yeah, I have used it and like it..mostly I just find it useful when my mouse isn't plugged in on my laptop.  I guess I mean I don't 'grok' it.  It just seems like a glorified launcher02:46
danbh_intrepidwell, the icon is butt ugly now, lol, so Im going iconless too02:46
bruce89I don't get these things either02:47
cwilluwtgee, glorify it... GLORIFY IT...02:47
Alex_GaynorI just turned on my wireless card(it's an intel 4965) and nothing is showing up in the network manager, what can I do to make sure it is set up right?02:47
bsniderdanbh_intrepid, it's not a _manly_ icon, is that it?02:47
wtgeeI like the icon.02:47
wtgeeBetter than the old one.02:47
danbh_intrepidwtgee: yeah, I dunno.  I never liked the launcher app, but somehow, I really like gnome-do02:48
danbh_intrepidbsnider: Im laughing right now, but thats pretty much it :P02:48
danbh_intrepidthe purple stuck out like a sore thumb for me02:49
bsniderdanbh_intrepid, i'd love to see you file a bug against it -- "gnome-do icon threatens my masculinity"02:49
albuntubsnider : that didnt worked for me but when i do sudo nvidia-xconfig and started x it is everything ok and this is my xorg : http://paste.ubuntu.com/55475/02:49
danbh_intrepidlol, I'd need an screen shot of the old one to do it proper02:50
bruce89hardly new icons, they've been there for almost a month02:50
bsnideralbuntu, no, no, no there's too much old garbage in that file02:50
wtgeebruce89: Well they came through on ibex today...for me at least.02:51
albuntuok then tell me some parts to remove from it02:51
bruce89revision 52802:51
albuntubut i am not finding a way to make it work without doing this02:51
bsnideralbuntu, make it look a bit more like mine02:51
albuntuok02:51
bsnideralbuntu, leave Section "Device" alone02:52
* bruce89 thinks the gnome-do people forgot to set their bzr identities02:52
bruce89apart from RAOF02:52
albuntubsnider : you mean remove anything and leave only section device02:52
albuntu??02:52
bsniderno02:53
bsniderjust make sure you don't touch that part02:53
albuntuah ok02:53
bsniderbecause that's what's telling xorg to load hte driver02:53
RAOFDanaG: For what its' worth, I've just built 0.9.13 packages.  Seems to work fine.02:53
albuntubut whats the problem if i live it like it is02:53
albuntuleave*02:53
Alex_GaynorAnyone on why I don't have any wireless networks listed when I turn on my network card?02:53
bsniderRAOF, are they going into theestimable raof ppa?02:54
albuntuAlex_Gaynor : maybe you dont have wireless near you . lol . just joking02:54
bsniderand uh...why isn't luke doing that?02:54
DanaGI tried to ./configure the PA 0.9.12, and it merely told me that autoconf was too old.02:54
RAOFbsnider: No; I just wanted to check that they can be built, and it's easier to do that with a package than installing all the build-depends manually :)02:54
albuntubsnider : is there any problem if i leave xorg.conf as it is without removing anything ?02:55
RAOFAnd Luke isn't doing that because there's no way 0.9.13 will make it into intrepid.02:55
RAOFalbuntu: Probably not, no.02:55
albuntuok thanks02:55
albuntugoing to restart x to try02:55
DanaGI've figured something out: my emu10k1 is the glitchiest of the 3 sound devices I have around here.02:56
bsniderRAOF, even if i file bug after annoying bug complaining about it?02:56
DanaGUSB-audio is less glitchy, and the onboard mostly just doesn't glitch.02:56
albuntuthanks to all of you02:58
albuntui managed to make it work02:59
alex_mayorgadid the last update to flashplugin-nonfree nuked flash for anyone else?02:59

bsnideralbuntu, make sure you use the tweaks that nvidia recommends, especially since you're using kde02:59
albuntui just removed that line and everything is ok02:59
albuntubsnider : what tweaks ?02:59
tyochi There, still I cant listen sound following http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=866965 for example in System/Preferences/Sound when I hit play on one of the outputs I get audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink: Failed to connect stream: Invalid argument03:00
bsnideralbuntu, http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=11808803:00

albuntubsnider : do i have to do this manually every time ?03:02
wastrelok hi03:02
bsnideralbuntu, make it a startup script03:02
albuntubsnider : how can i do that ?03:03
wastreli just built pilot-link and network hotsync works03:03
bsnideralbuntu, ask someone who uses kde03:03
DanaGRAOF: did you make an actual packaged PA 0.9.13?03:03
albuntubsnider : ok thanks.03:03
bsniderRAOF, you shouldn't have said anything03:04

burneranyone know if there's something like grsync that can use gvfs destinations so i can browse an ssh dir?03:08
burnerDanaG: multi monitor support problemo?03:08
DanaGI have only one monitor, actually.03:09
burnerwhy does "nvidia-settings" have to run before compiz?03:09
burnerwhy do you run nvidia-settings at all once the settings are configured?03:10

srdjanenyone encountered the same instalation bug?04:09
srdjan(i can describe)04:09
srdjanAfter installing Ubuntu 8.10 beta, first boot was only a desktop with a moving pointer but not panels (of GNOME)04:11
srdjanI hit ctrl_alt-backspace, and then reloged, everything was OK then04:11
menavas_i have solved my issue04:11
srdjanduring installation, I choosed "Autologin" option04:11
srdjan(so after killing X, and reloging, I was asked for my password, and from that moment autologin worked OK)04:13
srdjanthe problem was just that fist time.04:13
srdjanother thing I've noticed is no more automatic offer to install coceds on mp3, DivX.. and such - just a constatation: "can't play, missing codec"04:14
srdjanI hope this will be resolved in final04:14
alex_mayorga`Matir: any other questions or pointers?04:15
goat|lappynice menavas_04:15
`Matiralex_mayorga, no... trying to figure out if it's related to mine or what04:15
bsnidermaybe it will offer fluendo codecs for pay like fedora04:15
srdjan@bsnider - whatever  - things with offering codecs works on 8.04, and should work on 8.10, too04:16
RAOFsrdjan: Is the file you're trying to play actually supported by _any_ free codec?04:16
RAOFbsnider: Pay-for fluendo codecs are already offered.04:16
srdjanmp3 for instalnce?04:17
srdjanit has free codecs04:17
burnerkind of... not as free as ogg04:17
larson9999menavas_, plugged them in all the way?04:17
srdjanI installed 8.10 beta, clicked on mp3 and got message NO CODECS04:17
RAOFAnd the codec popup doesn't offer to install an mp3 decoder?04:17
srdjanno04:17
burnersrdjan: install "ubuntu-restricted-extras"04:17

burnerah ha... this is kubuntu... /me gets it now04:19

srdjanon Ubuntu04:20
burnerwell don't use that your first time ;)04:20
bsniderwhat if you try playing it in totem?04:20
srdjanbsnider - now I can play it how ever I wnat - it;s not me it is just that feature that should work for an average desktop JOE :)04:21
srdjanlike it worked on 8.0404:21
bsnidersrdjan, maybe not if you're using amarok on gnome though04:21
RAOFsrdjan: It probably doesn't work in Amarok anymore because Amarok's not using the gstreamer backend?04:22
srdjanand lijke it works noe for adobe-flash installer and nvidia drivers, for instance04:22
bsnidergnome doesn't know anything about amarok04:22

burneras a side note... 177.80 isout05:09
Codemasteroh nice05:09
Codemastermaybe i'll try upgrading anyway..05:09
tyocey people, finally I listen sound, rhytm+flash+amsn, but I also use a program called tuxguitar, which Im not able to listen at the same time than the others05:10
tyoco no, I see now, that is not listed on the devices of volume control in PA applet :S05:10
aurel42good morning05:19
aurel42For me, on intrepid, firefox dies when visiting thedailyshow.com, or, with noscript, when starting the flash application on the "full episodes" page.05:19
aurel42Can someone reproduce this?05:19
aurel42I'm using "flashplugin-nonfree   10.0.1.218+10.0.0.525"05:20
aurel42...and it also happens in -safe-mode05:21
DanaGGrr, how the heck am I supposed to set up an rfcomm port now?05:21
DanaGBluez 4.x seems like a regression to me.05:21
Codemasterburner, wastrel: yep, it's still fubar'd - let me post my XORG05:21
[11touche]is anyone stuck at "update-initramfs: Generating /boot....." ??05:21
[11touche]this is taking ages05:21
aurel42[11touche]: I seem to remember it took a long time when I built the image for the first time.05:22
aurel42[11touche]: in cases like that, I like to have a peek with "strace -eopen -p <PID>"05:23
[11touche]ok, but I can see no disk activity..05:23
Codemasterburner, wastrel: http://pastebin.com/d264ebb7305:24
Codemasterany ideas from that? :\05:24
aurel42Can someone please check whether my problem with thedailyshow.com is reproducible? (If yes, I can stop looking for a fix and start cursing Adobe)05:24
Codemasteri tried reconfiguring xserver-xorg, reinstalling the nvidia drivers and re-running nvidia-xconfig05:25
burnerit has no screen sizes, but i dunno05:25
Codemastermy screen size is a WSXGA+05:25
Codemasterso it's the 1680 x 1200 or whatnot05:25
burnerhttp://burner.ath.cx/xorg.conf.txt05:25
Codemasterwhat would you recommend I do from here?05:25
Codemasterburner: as i am kind of stumped and highly frustrated since i can't really use my OS as it is05:27
aurel42Codemaster: if you need to USE it, how come you're on intrepid? ;)05:28
Codemasterto fix my wireless issues05:28
Codemasterit would have microcode SW errors and the only resolution was to upgrade to the new kernel05:28
IdleOneCan someone please add to the right click menu a " Convert video file " option? ( .mod to .avi etc etc )05:28
IdleOnein nautilus that is05:28
CodemasterIdleOne: that would be pretty cool05:28
IdleOneCodemaster: heck yeah it would05:29
IdleOneonly needs to show when there are video files in the dir05:29
mike-solidushey guys, my framebuffer is messed up on boot, its a garbled screen and i have to run kwin --replace& everytime i boot or i don't have window decorations05:30
aurel42So nobody here watches Jon Stewart, huh?05:32
* burner does!05:33
aurel42burner: with intrepid?05:33
[11touche]Another interesting bug: On live-CD, it detected both monitors on my radeon 9600, in clone mode, but now it can't even detect my second monitor (on DVI-0)05:33
burneraurel42: indeed, via hulu05:33
aurel42burner: ie. on the web?05:33
aurel42burner: dang, I can't use hulu, I'm not in the US.05:34
burnerdailyshow.com has clips that make up a whole show... does that work?05:34
mike-solidushow do i get the qt 4 development files on my installation, cant find the packages05:34
* burner didn't realize hulu was US only... can't you fake it to make it think you're from teh US?05:34
aurel42burner: if you're not doing anything important with your browser right now... would you check thedailyshow.com for me? (attention, firefox will probably crash)05:35
burnerwhat about it?  it rocks here05:35
aurel42burner: I'd like to know if any Firefox crashes or if it's just mine.05:35
aurel42burner: it crashes when I go to "Full Episodes" and try to watch an episode.05:35
burnerdon't use the full episode player, that's just an embedded hulu05:36
aurel42burner: well, it worked until I upgraded to intrepid.05:36
burnerbut if you jsut watch the clips via the front page, they play in order anyway... and it can fullscreen now05:36
burneroh, works here05:36
mike-solidushow do i get my ntfs partition to mount?05:37
burneractually, maybe it doesn't use hulu for the full episode player anymore... it looks different and i dont' see the hulu branding i saw before05:37
burnermike-solidus: plug it in?05:37
mike-solidusburner: its on the same drive as my kubuntu partition05:37
aurel42the clips on the front page are crashing my Firefox, too. Good to know it works for you - it must be a solvable problem then.05:37
aurel42thanks, burner05:38
burnermike-solidus:  places -> computer ?05:38
Codemasterburner: it seems compiz works now, but i am still having issues with my window manager05:38
Codemasterstill have the huge fonts05:38
Codemasteretc.05:38
mike-solidusburner: i'm on kubuntu05:38
burneraurel42: you can always mv ~/.mozilla ~/.mozilla-backup-to-test-fresh-profile05:38
aurel42burner: I tried with -safe-mode which should do basically the same.05:39
burnerkubuntu: can you use dolphin to double-click it?05:39
aurel42burner: didn't help, though.05:39
burneraurel42: i don't think it's the same thing05:39
burneraurel42: but whatever, sure you have flashplugin-nonfree installed?05:39
aurel42burner: well, it's worth a try.05:39
mike-solidusburner: dolphin claims i dont have a system:/ url, i'm pretty sure for some reason when i made the upgrade it didn't give me dolphin-kde405:39
aurel42burner: sure. I also tried with the current beta from Adobe, same thing.05:39
burnermike-solidus: sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop  should get it05:40
burneraurel42: try that profile thing... or try as another user on your pc if you have one05:40
aurel42burner: with fresh .mozilla, the browser will crash immediately when I access the front page.05:40
Codemasterburner: maybe it's something with metacity..?05:40
Codemasteri am stumped, currently :(05:41
burnerCodemaster: doubt it... try my xorg?05:41
mike-solidusburner: kk i'll try that05:41
burnerCodemaster: what's up with your window manager?05:41
Codemasterburner: not sure05:41
burnerCodemaster: metacity isn't in use if you're using compiz05:41
Codemasterburner: compiz seems to work, rofl.05:41
Codemasterbut the text is still huge like xbox05:41
burneroh... change your res?05:41
burnerrun "nvidia-settings" ?05:42
Codemastermy res is correct05:42
burnerCodemaster: dpi all jacked up?05:43
Codemasterit's at 9605:43
Codemasterthat was my initial thought - maybe it messed with the DPI05:43
* burner uses 96 too05:43
* DanaG doesn't use 96... because it's not correct for his screen.05:44
DanaGMy screen is 99 DPI... so I use 99 DPI.05:44
Codemasterhm interesting05:44
Codemasterburner: i go into the compiz settings and none of the images show in the larger area05:45
Codemasterie - how it usually has little samples/previews of what each feature does05:45
DanaGOh yeah, and nvidia has this stupid thing where they change the virtual size of the display when changing resolution... rather than changing the DPI.05:45
burnerCodemaster: pick a different theme?05:45
* Codemaster tries05:45
DanaGAnyone know how to create an rfcomm connection in the Bluez 4.x tools?  The only way seems to be through rfcomm.conf, or through manual rfcomm command usage.  In BlueZ 3.x, I could use "BlueMan" to connect... but not the normal Bluetooth applet in Gnome. And now there's no way to use EITHER to do it.05:46
Codemasterburner_: no change, but05:47
Codemasteri just lowered the font-size05:47
Codemasterso it's okay now lol05:47
Codemasteras long as it's working and not bothering me, im good05:47
Codemasterburner_: however, the no images in the compiz settings thing still kind of haunts me :/05:48
burner_Codemaster: could always use metacity.... alt+f2, metacity --replace05:54
Codemasteryeah05:55

Nhorninghello?06:07
NhorningI upgraded to early in beta, and my internet connection is broken in ibex06:08
NhorningI'm on a hardy live cd right now06:08
Nhorningcan I update my system by downloading the alternate install to my Ibex installation, and then mounting it there?06:09
Nhorninganyone awake?06:10
burnerNhorning: you have an intel nic that uses hte e1000 driver by chance?06:25
burnerNhorning: try upgrading to the latest updates?06:25
NhorningI have an intel card06:26
Nhorningbut I don't know what the exact problems is06:26
NhorningI'm pretty sure, however, that it's been fixed06:26
NhorningI just can't upgrade because I don't have a working net connection in ibex06:26
NhorningI'm working off the hardy live cd right now06:27
DanaGYou can perhaps download the new kernel packages, then boot Intrepid again.06:27
DanaGThen install the downloaded packages.06:27

Nhorninghey!06:48
NhorningI think I have a pretty simple question...06:48
Nhorninglimited time....06:48
Nhorningplease...06:50
jumpkickquick question, I'm using Gnome now, having been forcefully upgraded from KDE3 to KDE4 and not enjoying "progress"...  How does one configure the window list to have two rows of icons like KDE3 or the Windows taskbar will do when you make it big enough?06:51
jumpkickNhorning, what is your question?06:51
supert0nesnot till 4.2 sorry06:51
NhorningI need write permission to my ibex harddrive06:52
Nhorningusing the hardy live cd06:52
hansinCodemaster: Are you still having issues with latest Nvidia driver?  Mine did not upgrade well to 177.80.  What fixed it was to uninstall all Nvidia stuff, and reinstall.  Then is worked.  Seems to me a bug was introduced.06:52
jumpkicksupert0nes, I already purge KDE off my system, I want to know if Gnome 2.24 can do it06:52
supert0nesoh06:52
jumpkickpurged06:52
hansinMaybe a bug.  But didn't seem to upgrade well.06:52
supert0nesya i don't know that i'm a kde4 user06:53
Nhorningdid you hear my question jumpkick?06:54
jumpkickNhorning: yeah06:54
Nhorningdo you know how to do it?06:54
NhorningI have the drive mounted06:54
Nhorningbut I need write permission to update my ibex installation06:55
jumpkickon KDE you'd just right click on the drive icon and set the properties to read/write I think06:55
supert0neschmod?06:55
jumpkickyou'll likely have to use sudo mount with a remount option06:55
Nhorningwhat's the command line?06:55
jumpkickthe liveCDs mark the drives as read-only06:55
crdlbjumpkick: set the panel size to >=48 if you're asking about gnome06:56
jumpkickor mount the drive rather06:56
jumpkickcrdlb: oh thanks, I had it at 42 and it didn't do anything and I didn't see any options.... 48 works wonderfully thanks06:56
Nhorningso what do I type in the terminal?06:57
jumpkickI'm not going to tell you exactly....  it will be something like 'sudo mount -o remount,rw  /harddrivemount'06:58
Nhorning alright, whats the important option? remount?06:59
jumpkickthere is also another syntax in the man page for remount06:59
jumpkicktype "man mount" then type "/remount" and hit "/" a couple of times till you find the examples of remounting06:59
jumpkickor you can try going into the properties of the drive in "Places -> Computer" and see if there is an option to do it like in KDE07:00
DanaGNhorning:07:02
DanaGOh, you can just use command line to copy as root to your user dir.07:02
DanaGIt may be that the livecd 'ubuntu' user is not the same UID as your own user on the installed system.07:02
jumpkickhe probably needs to fix something on his hdd that he already installed...07:02

elmargoldmh65: closed source drivers are great... The problem is if they fail you are doomed09:14
dmh65too much cash involved though I guess09:14
elmargolSome large distributions should start selling a reference platform09:14
dmh65they usually dont fail though if they are made for a particular distro09:14
scizzo-elmargol: you are not really doomed......what exactly happens when you start X?09:15
dmh65I think once some real good and popular gaming platform comes to Linux and there is a market the drivers will come a bit quicker :)09:16
scizzo-elmargol: also.....the ubuntu release of Ibex is still in beta mode....so it is not 100% sure to work just yet..09:16
elmargolscizzo-: the grafic driver crashes. I see only garbage on the screen and I have to hardreboot09:16
elmargolscizzo-: sure and If I don't report issues it stays broken09:16
scizzo-elmargol: right and this is bugged in launchpad?09:16
elmargolscizzo-: I don't get you09:17
dmh65Ubuntu do care about manufacturer drivers09:17
dmh65I remember when I first installed Hardy and the first thing it told me was that there was a shiny 3d driver waiting for me09:18
scizzo-elmargol: what is the bug number?09:18
dmh65I jumped at it09:18
scizzo-elmargol: nvm found it09:18
elmargolscizzo-: bug #270617 bug #27802909:19

kblinhehe09:20
Cheeryhave you ever wondered what you really want from an OS?09:21
scizzo-elmargol: and you have compiz on?09:21
CheeryI bought a newer computer and tried compiz, but realised that compiz sucks09:22
Cheerybecause I want snappy comp, not flashy comp09:22
dmh65Cheery, email client, browser a,d a ssh client, after that I am happy lol09:22
kblinCheery: actually, what I want from my OS is to help me get my work done and not get in my way09:22
dmh65*and09:22
Cheerykblin: that's more commonly recognised property09:23
dmh65so, how do I edit flash websites in Linux?09:23
Cheerybut it's hard to obey, since OS gets on your way anyway09:23
scizzo-elmargol: my suggestion to you is to check wether compiz is on or not and see if that makes any difference when turning off and on. Also try to use a older driver or even try envy09:24
dmh65this ceative commons thing is getting popular09:24
Cheeryat least in form of interpreting input and showing your stuff for you.09:24
dmh65*creative09:24
kblinCheery: dunno, seems like people spend more time on giving me wobbly windows than e.g. making my VM manager work09:24
Cheeryhmm09:25
dmh65I use minimal desktop effects09:25
elmargolscizzo-: like I have written at the bug. I tried compiz, kwin and dissabling the effects (it does not matter)09:26
elmargolCheery: I think kwin is better than compiz (if you use kde4)09:27
kblinhow do I get my four most-used apps back to the panel in kde4?09:29
CheeryI also want convenience from my desktop09:29
Cheeryoh well, I guess I'll try whether this thing still reboots09:30
dmh65convenience sounds like a grocers store09:33
scizzo-elmargol: also tried envy?09:38
joakimsomeone else having problems with the latest updates?09:38
joakimmine's hung after updating menu.lst09:39
elmargolscizzo-: isnt envy a driver installer?09:39
bugabundo_workjoakim: my only probs are with kdepim and nvidia driver09:40
scizzo-elmargol: yes.....however the thing is.....is it a problem with the .deb provided by jockey or the source driver....09:41
scizzo-elmargol: and envy from what I know is installing the source driver09:41
scizzo-elmargol: not the .deb09:41
elmargoljockey installs from source too09:41
joakimhmm ok.. strange. i think theres a few more things it needs to do after the menu.lst09:41
elmargolintrepid uses DKMS  now09:42
scizzo-so pretty much what you are trying to say is that you have tried everything?09:44
elmargolscizzo-: I have and this bug is almost a month old now09:44
scizzo-right....09:45
Oli``dmh65: using Adobe Flash... But that doesn't run natively under Linux, so you either need Wine (a lightweight Windows API) or VirtualBox/VMWare and run Windows from within Linux09:45
scizzo-for me the nvidia drivers works just fine09:46
elmargolscizzo-: what chip are you using?09:46
elmargol01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GeForce Go 7900 GS (rev a1)09:47
scizzo-8800gts09:47
scizzo-or something like that09:47
elmargolhmm someone says swichting form dynamic to powersafe mode fixes the issue... lets try this09:48

scizzo-Alberic: ask your question and see if anyone can answer13:08
robin0800scizzo-: have to run the script again may take a little while13:09
AlbericIt's a boot problem. Long story short, I installed XP, updated that, and then installed 8.10b. Grub loads Intrepid fine, but winXP option just gives me a sad black screen.13:09
vega_PC-Ente: network-manager also broke for me this week, just says "no connection" and a red icon13:09
vega_Alberic: so all is well? :)13:10
vega_PC-Ente: when in fact i have a connection13:10

HobbseeAlberic: does the black screen show any error messages?13:11

NhorningI'm in a hardy live cd13:14
HobbseeAlberic: weird.13:14
HobbseeAlberic: so it clearly finds out something about windows.13:14
Nhorningand I've chrooted over to my ibex install13:14
HobbseeAlberic: i wonder if you can run a repair on windows, or something13:14
NhorningI get the packages I downloaded with aptget13:14
Nhorningisnstalled13:15

AlbericHobbsee: tried that already, reinstalling in place, done nothing but 'fix' the MBR the microsoft way, then reinstall grub and (btw) fix it's auto detect to the good partitions13:16
Nhorninghey there...  I am Sooo close to getting this fixed13:17
HobbseeNhorning: sudo chroot /wherever/you/mounted/your/root/, and you get dropped into a root console.13:17
NhorningI'm there13:17
Hobbseethen use apt?13:17
NhorningI've even used aptget13:17
Nhorningand apt-get -d13:18
Hobbseeright.  and?13:18
Nhorningbut when I reboot in ibex13:18
Nhorningthey don't seem to be installed13:18
HobbseeAlberic: erk.  wonder if you'll have to reinstall windows.  sounds like it threw a hissy fit :(13:18
Nhorningand the autoupdater tells me...13:18
Nhorningthat I have packages waiting to be installed13:18
Nhorningbut when I try to install them...13:18
Nhorningit can't because I have no net connection13:19
Hobbseedid you use apt-get update and apt-get dist-upgrade?13:19
Nhorninghmm, not the secondone13:19
AlbericHobbsee: already done, twice. I wonder if grub masses up teh otherwise seemingly functionnal boot of windows. I'll keep on my tries, and keep you informed, shall I ?13:19
NhorningI used apt-get -d13:19
NhorningI thought it was the same13:19
Nhorningit's not eh?13:19
HobbseeAlberic: oh, right, so you had done a full install.13:20
HobbseeNhorning: no, man apt-get would tell you that...13:20
HobbseeAlberic: it certainly shouldn't do - i've not heard of it doing so before.13:20
AlbericHobbsee: yes, i did13:20
Nhorningok, good I'll try then13:20
HobbseeAlberic: but, there's always something possible (particularly if it's vista)13:20

Nhorningoh13:21
Nhorningthats the problem with ubuntu13:21
Nhorningyou get newbs like me using it13:21
AlbericHobbsee: neither did I. but it's XP, and the bug seems to occur right after GRUB gives hand to XP, since i can get the F8 menu. So I may be offtopic.13:22
Hobbseeyou use commands without knowing what they do, and don't check the manpages?13:22

HobbseeNhorning: yeah.  I was (half) joking :)13:22

Hobbseeindeed.13:25
Hobbseemostly it's 'ping' and such.  but still13:26
Nhorningbut I think last night when I was trying this13:26
Nhorningpeople assumed that I knew how to mount with write access13:26
AlbericNhorning: tha'ts quite not true anymore. WinXP uses a lot of console, and the average human using ubuntu doesn't have to go console-ish more than once a month or so...13:26
Hobbseechroot has automatic write access?13:26
Nhorningno13:27
Nhorningbecause I'm in the live cd13:27
NhorningI was getting mad errors last night because I used chroot after mounting from the gui13:27
Hobbseeonce you mount the drive, and chroot it, it gets auto access, normally13:27

rmngnomefreak, so do we have to use a special xpi, or is it some external package that causes it?13:34
gnomefreakrmn: havent checked email yet i was away from home over weekend13:34
rmngnomefreak, fair enough :)13:34

HobbseeOTOH, the next part doesn't require an internet connection13:34
gnomefreakrmn: or download it from PPA and use dpkg to install it13:34
Nhorningso if I ctrl+c it what does it do?13:35

Hobbseermn: run a dist-upgrade?13:37
Hobbseermn: (you're doing the equivalent of telling us that africans are hungry, btw)13:38
rmnHobbsee, hehe, ok.13:38
robin0800scizzo-: don't think rockbox will change anything as it works in 8.04 but not 10 and 10 is still in beta13:39
rmnHobbsee, in ibex, all updates until today, update manager now tells me: not all updates can be installed.  this could be because of a previous upgrade didn't complete (don't think so), problems with some of the installed software (arbitrary packages chosen in the update.  looks odd), unofficial packages (the kernel is one of the unavailable packages, as is half of the bluez-related updates), normal changes of a pre-release..... <--13:40
rmnHobbsee, as it is likely to be the latter dist-upgrade should solve it, correctly assumed?13:41
Hobbseermn: right.  I'd say so.13:41
Hobbseethere might be some packaging bugs in there, but the dist-upgrade should certainly solve most, if not all, of it.13:41
rmnHobbsee, ok, i'll do that some time later today when i don't have as many applications running.13:41

danbh_intrepidZappza: whats it supposed to do?  I don't see how you can boot from RAM, since RAM gets wiped when you power down19:48
danbh_intrepidZappza: booting 'to' RAM, whats that even mean?19:48
ZappzaIt isn't ment to be a permanent install. You copy the LiveCD to RAM, and everything is run from there making Ubuntu extremely fast, as well as making it possible to use the CD/DVD drive for other things than the Ubuntu CD :)19:51
TheInfinityZappza: just buy a ram-disc ;)19:52
danbh_intrepidZappza: so its a faster live environment?19:52
danbh_intrepidinteresting...19:53
ZappzaAlso, if you have three settings in your bootloader, one to make persistant changes, one to boot from RAM using the changes made, only extremely faster, and the last one to boot from the CD for PCs with small amounts of RAM19:53
ingo0815so i typed adept_manager --dist-upgrade-devel19:53

ingo0815my fan is very loud since i installed today the updates19:55
ingo0815and a user from here told me to type adept_manager --dist-upgrade-devel19:55
ZappzaSo that is not an option, and why spend massive amounts of money on a RAM disk, when it is possible to do that for free with a few settings ;)19:55
danbh_intrepidingo0815: try this exact command: sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop^19:55
ingo0815i dont use kubuntu19:56
ingo0815i use ubuntu19:56
ZappzaYeah, but when you run a LiveCD, each time you do something Ubuntu has to get the data required from somewhere, if you are running it from a DVD, that's where Ubuntu gets the data from, but if you run it from RAM it will get the data there, and that is sooo much faster :)19:56
danbh_intrepidingo0815: o           k               .      The person who told you to use that command was quite confused19:56

TuniX12question for intrepid testers does it support RTL8180L wifi chipset  correctly20:00
QVZappza: that is sort of how the initrd works... loads the initial fs into ram then boots to it. if you want to implement what you are suggesting i recommend taking a look at that because that is the best place to do so. :)20:00
QValthough, i don't recommend staying in the initrd environment... you should switchroot to your new ramdisk, or better yet, tmpfs to allow swapping unused portions if a swapfile exists20:01
QVas for a speed boost, i'm not sure how much of a speed boost you will get considering it still has to load things from the CD/DVD initially20:03
QVand if you have a lot of RAM, the kernel typically caches recently used files in memory... although perhaps you can probably tweak the kernel to be a bit more aggressive at keeping access files in memory20:04
QVwell, caching blocks is probably more accurate, but you get the point ;)20:04

perilluxafter an update a few days ago, now whenever I start firefox it always appears to be in "work offline" mode.  Also for the little icon that shows network connections in the tray, there is now a little x and when I put my mouse over it, it says "no network connections."  This is very strange though because everything works.  I can connect to the internet just fine, the only problem is that firefox is always set to offline mode, and I have21:18

gilligan_magic sysrq isn't enabled by default in intrepid or is it ?21:19
crimsungilligan_: it is enabled.21:20
cwilluperillux, you aren't using network manager to run your network connection.  Firefox grew the ability a while back to monitor the network status, and go into offline mode automatically.  To disable that, go to about:config, and search for toolkit.networkmanager.disable, and set it to true21:20
gilligan_crimsun, maybe I should dump some info then? you tell me ;]21:21
gilligan_if that even gets through21:21

cwilluperillux, I don't know.21:22

cwilluperillux, granted that it's too late to do anything about it now, but you probably shouldn't be using the beta21:24

shirishjaysonsantos: it would tar and compress everything inside of it as well, right?21:27

BenHoltzLinny: it will not load22:22
BenHoltz:)22:22
* BenHoltz needs to explain..22:23
KamilionSegmentation fault, fallback problems, corrupt display?22:23
BenHoltzhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/55790/22:23
BenHoltzthat's the output of compiz --replace22:24
Kamilionlooks like it's not detecting a DRI 3D adapter22:24
BenHoltzPlease note, that I'm using a hybrid version of studio22:24
KamilionAnd I'd assume this is also a problem: libccs: dlopen: /usr/lib/compizconfig/backends/libgconf.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory22:25
KamilionBut as I'm not much of a compiz user, I'm not sure what to tell you.22:25
KlrSpzThe fglrx and two of the older nvidia binary drivers are not available for X.Org 7.4 yet, so users of these drivers will be automatically switched to the corresponding open source drivers.22:27
nspyrdont you need to have metacity installed?22:27
nspyrBenHoltz: do you?22:27
strangedowngrading nvidia fixed my problem22:27
strangerevision 17322:27
KamilionFrom what I can see from your log though, it looks like it's falling back to indirect rendering (mesa, perhaps?) and also that it can't load it's configuration from gconf.22:27
strange177 gave me errors22:27
BenHoltznspyr: Yes, it was working yesterday22:27
MadsRHHi. How do I write the location on this project https://launchpad.net/syllabus   in this format  bazaar.launchpad.net/~registrant/project/branch22:28
nspyrBenHoltz: do you have compiz-config-backend-gconf installed?22:28
KlrSpzwhich driver are you using? the testing page states that the new drivers are incompatible with xorg7.422:28
BenHoltznspyr: yes, it was recently upgraded...22:29
RAOFBenHoltz: It looks like you've managed to half-upgrade your compiz.  Which shouldn't happen.22:31
BenHoltzRAOF: yay... the fix is to re-install?22:31
nspyrBenHoltz: compiz-wrapper?22:31
RAOFBenHoltz: Maybe.  Possibly you just need to run aptitude update && aptitude full-upgrade again.22:32
KamilionRAOF: hm, I'm not familiar with that aptitude command, is that like apt-get dist-upgrade?22:32
RAOFKamilion: Yes.22:32
KamilionRAOF: Better / Worse?22:33
Kamilionor just different way of kicking it off?22:33
=== ompaul_ is now known as ompaul
BenHoltzRAOF: no dice.. No packages will be installed, upgraded, or removed.22:33
RAOFBenHoltz: Hm.  Well, I've just upgraded my compiz to the latest version in the archives, and it doesn't suffer from that.  Why not try "sudo aptitude reinstall ~ncompiz"?22:34
KamilionBenHoltz: I'd say try removing compiz (not purge) and reinstalling it.22:34
BenHoltzRAOF: having ubuntu studio on here has caused me more problems then its worth.. how do I go back to vanilla ubuntu?22:34
RAOFKamilion: That's what "aptitude reinstall" is for :)22:35
KamilionEh, I came from gentoo/LinuxFromScratch so I'm used to doing steps manually to assure myself I've done it right ;)22:36
RAOFKamilion: aptitude full-upgrade is the equivalent aptitude command to apt-get dist-upgrade; they both basically to the same thing.  I just prefer aptitude; it seems to give more useful errors ;)22:36
KamilionHm. I'll keep that in mind. (more useful errors)22:36
BenHoltzRAOF: did the re-install... no dice... same errors22:39
Kamilion... !22:39
RAOFHm.  Can you pastebin "dpkg --list | grep compiz"?22:39
KamilionBenHoltz: Try switching mirrors. Perhaps the one you're using is out of date?22:39
KamilionI had that problem using duke.edu's mirror previously.22:40
BrianFreytagduke sucks.. that's why ;)22:40
* Kamilion shrugs. It was fast. Probably because it sucks. ;)22:41
Kage_Jittaiwill kubuntu intrepid have kde4?22:41
BenHoltzI have archive.canonical.com/ubuntu intrepid partner22:41
BrianFreytagKage_Jittai: yes22:41
Kage_JittaiSweetness22:41
Sergiuhey peoples, can i install displayconfig-gtk package in 8.10 ?22:42

znoGbut i can imagine getting a distribution release ready that works for soooooooo many people is no easy task22:43
Sergiuand i need to edit this file again22:43

Sergiu:DD22:44
BenHoltzanyone have a solution to my question though?22:44
znoGSergiu: oh ... didn't do that with hardy?22:44
Sergiu:evil:22:44
SergiuznoG, nope )22:44
Sergiuwhy in piding there are no an  smile ?22:45
Sergiu:D22:45
Sergiuneed to ask the pidgin team22:46
Sergiuand probaly this was an offtopic22:46
BenHoltznevermind about my question... I'll just live with it like this...22:47
KamilionBenHoltz: Sec, trying to look it up22:48
znoGSergiu: it's probably dhclient overwriting your resolv.conf, not network-manager.22:48
BenHoltzKamilion: I figured out I don't have the whole package...22:48
SergiuznoG, are you running ubuntu 8.10 now?)22:49
BenHoltzKamilion: I only have partials22:49
znoGSergiu: yes22:49
KamilionI think you should be able to apt-get purge ubuntu-studio && apt-get autoremove22:49
znoGactually i'm not sure what network-manager uses to fetch it's IP address22:49
Kamilionbut I'm not 100% sure22:49
znoGit doesn't depend on dhcp3 as I would have thought22:49
visik7hi22:49
SergiuznoG, have you succeed to change the screen resolution in whatever you need?22:49
znoGSergiu: yes22:49
visik7anyone got problem with boot on some asus laptops ?22:49
znoGi'm using an extended desktop and i changed resolutions .. worked fine22:50
Plzvisik7: I have lot`s of problems booting on Fujitsu-siemens E8110.22:50
znoGSergiu: you might want to try backing up your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, run sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg ... then restart X22:50
PlzI just stop in the loadingscreen at about 20%.22:50
PlzIt*22:50
PlzWhen it happends I just reboot a few times and then it works.22:51
znoGSergiu: i'm pretty sure your resolv.conf problem is due to dhclient overwriting the file22:51
Sergiuok22:51
visik7Plz: intrepid here doesn't boot if the AC is plugged /sbin/udevadm lock my machne22:54
ikoniavisik7: thats very odd22:55
visik7I should report something like a bug maybe22:56
ikoniacertainly seems worth reporting22:57
tretlehi, is there an issue with rhythmbox on intrepid atm?22:58
PlzNo idea tbh.23:00
PlzI`m only using VLC and Songbird.23:00
visik7any clue on how to debug it ?23:01
ikoniavisik7: I'd boot single user mode, see if that makes a difference23:02
eteslaIs there a changelog or anything like that for Heron -> Ibex anywhere?23:02
ikoniavisik7: then walk though the init scripts23:03
visik7no, single user mode doesn't hang23:03
RAOFetesla: There's the release notes.  But if you wanted a full changelog, it's _huge_ (and not written down in any one place).23:04
eteslaRAOF: Gotcha. If I wanted to find out if a problem with my video card has been fixed (or a patch applied), would that information be available somewhere?23:06
derekS.win 223:07
RAOFetesla: In the changelog for your driver package, if everyone has done their jobs right.23:09
RAOFetesla: packages.ubuntu.com should have links to the changelog.23:09
danbh_intrepidetesla: http://packages.ubuntu.com/intrepid/xserver-xorg-video-openchrome23:11
PlzAfter updating CompizConfig is fucked up. Can`t edit anything and mini/maxi windows has another effect than what I configured.23:23
BrianFreytagPlz.. language23:29
KamilionGotta reboot. BBL.23:29
JasonWoof"desktop effects" workes on my dell inspirot 5100 on the intrepid beda live CD!23:33
JasonWoofvery cool23:34
PlzIt did work good untill I updated 8.10 today...23:34
JasonWoofI couldn't turn off the automounting of USB disks though. I ran polkit-gnome-authorization and turned it off there23:34
PlzHad no problem before with 8.10.23:34
JasonWoofbut my usp stick kept getting mounted. very annoying. I was trying to run the "install to USB", but it kept failing because gnome kept mounting stuff it was trying to work with23:35
shiiizoonI am using Ubuntu 8.10 BETA in my notebook. The wireless driver "wl" not support "monitor mode"? I am trying to use Kismet, but don't work!23:36
JasonWoofwait, this page: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LiveUsbPendrivePersistent?highlight=(drive)|(usb)#Live USB creator (GUI-based, runs from Live CD)23:38
JasonWoofsays that the "install to USB" thing is on the intrepid livecd23:39
JasonWoofbut I couldn't find it, and installd hardy debs of it (onto my system while booted from intrepid beta CD)23:39
PiciJasonWoof: Did you log a bug that it was not working?23:40
amrikgksu crashes when asking for a password and compiz is enabled23:42
amrikif compiz is disabled i get the "enter password" box fine23:42
JasonWoofPici: I didn't realize until now that the intrepid CD was even supposed to have the "install to usb" program23:42
JasonWoofPici: and even now I'm not sure23:43
PiciJasonWoof: Ah, I see.23:43
KamilionJasonWoof: What command might that be?23:44
JasonWoofshiiizoon: you got one of these? Known supported cards: Atmel_USB, ACX100, ADMTek, Atheros, Cisco, Prism2, Orinoco, WSP100, Drone, wtapfile, pcapfile, wrt54g, ipw2100, rt2400, rt2500, rt73, rt8180, ipw2200, ipw2915, ipw3945, iwl3945, iwl4965, Broadcom 43xx23:45
KamilionJasonWoof: the instal-to-usb, I mean23:45
JasonWoofKamilion: I did it all with the mouse. I downloaded the normal intrepid beta cd, hunted in the menus23:45
KamilionHuh. I'll hunt it down myself as well then.23:46
KamilionThanks.23:46
JasonWoofKamilion: I downloaded this: http://ppa.launchpad.net/probono/ubuntu/pool/main/l/liveusb/liveusb_0.1.0_all.deb23:47
JasonWoofKamilion: following links from here: https://launchpad.net/liveusb23:47
JasonWoofthat gave me a .deb on my desktop, I double-clicked that, and it installed two dependancies, and the package23:47
KamilionOh, cool. Thanks. I'll give that a shot myself to have a second installation on my USB key23:48
JasonWoof"install to USB" showed up in the "system -> administration" menu23:48
KamilionIf you've got a U3 compatible USB flash device, check this out: http://blog.sllabs.com/2008/05/booting-heron-from-u3.html23:48
JasonWoofKamilion: I couldn't get it to work, I think the auto-mounter was conflicting with liveusb23:48
Kamiliontry unmounting the device first. AFAIK to boot from a USB harddrive (flash), it needs to install a bootsector, which means the drive needs a MBR. A lot of flash drives I've run into have no MBR and are just set up as FAT32 on the entire device (IE, /dev/sda is VFAT, not /dev/sda1)23:50
shiiizoonJasonWoof:  i have Broadcom 43xx23:50
shiiizoonJasonWoof: but when i try change my interface mode to monitor, return a error23:51
JasonWoofKamilion: the u3 thing is cool!23:51
JasonWoofKamilion: I did unmount it. the rouble is that gnome re-mounts my flash stick in the middle of liveusb working on it23:52
JasonWoofpresumably right after it's partitioned and formatted23:52
Kamilionyeah, works great. I have hardy32 on my sandisk cruzer titanium, and intrepid64 on my sandisk cruzer micro. Both 4GB drives.23:53
JasonWoofcool23:53
KamilionAhhh. yeah, it probably is remounting it when the kernel re-reads the partition table.23:53
JasonWoofthat should be able to boot my gf's damn macbook air23:53
KamilionIf you've got a windows box around somewhere, find the HP flash drive formatter and use that to prep the stick first23:53
JasonWoofshiiizoon: that sucks. you may have to use a different driver. my laptop has a builtin broadcom 4309. gave me trouble, and now I don't think it works at all anymore23:54
KamilionIIRC you need fwcutter-43xx or something23:55
JasonWoofKamilion: yeah, I went through all that23:55
JasonWoofshiiizoon: does your broadcom card work with the wl driver?!23:55
shiiizoonJasonWoof: yes, works perfectly23:56
JasonWoofshiiizoon: did you have to do the fwcutter thing?23:56
Kamilionshiiizoon: IIRC the 43xx needs to be patched to use monitor mode... But maybe that's just for packet injection.23:56
shiiizoonJasonWoof: checkout http://tiagosc.pastebin.com/m537313f423:56
JasonWoofshiiizoon: yep, I used to get errors like that23:57
JasonWoofshiiizoon: even when doing normal stuff, like "iwconfig essid xxx"23:57
shiiizoonJasonWoof: yeah23:57
JasonWoofdunno if it's crappy hardware, crappy drivers, or both23:58
JasonWoofI suspect both23:58
KamilionLittle of column A, little of column B.23:58
