[00:57] Can someone answer a quick static IP question for me? [00:58] Depends on the question. [01:01] What do I need to change in the /etc/resolv.conf file? [01:01] I don't have any idea how to do this any more. lol [01:01] Did you actually just laugh out loud then? [01:02] Actually yes. [01:03] Okay then. All you need in your resolv.conf is pointers to your dns servers, ala; nameserver 1.2.3.4 [01:03] Ok. I know I find that in ipconfig /all [01:03] Apparently the answer to your first question is yes. [01:03] giggle [01:04] but I don't remember what I am looking for as information in there [01:05] someone want to ssh it and I'll start a screen so I can learn? [01:06] I really have no idea what the info is, but I know where it all is. I just hate not knowing what to look for [01:07] kdb424: Free security lesson: To modify that file you'd have to give them root access to your box. From there on you may as well assume it's their box, not yours. [01:07] I don't understand what your issue is. You know your nameserver IP? Put a line in resolv.conf - that's it. [01:08] ScottK: No, because in a screen session, I can enter text (like passwords) too. I can give them a non admin account to use. [01:08] hads. I don't know what line to look for. [01:08] Still don't get it. `man resolv.conf` [01:12] I guess I don [01:12] I don't have to touch it [01:13] All fixed. Didn't touch it === freaky_t is now known as fReAky_t === fReAky_t is now known as freaky_t [05:11] New bug: #281569 in samba (main) "package samba-common 2:3.2.3-1ubuntu3 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1" [Undecided,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/281569 [09:03] moin [09:06] good afternoon [11:18] New bug: #281665 in samba (main) "gvfsd-smb crashed with SIGSEGV in strlen()" [Medium,Incomplete] https://launchpad.net/bugs/281665 [11:40] Hi [11:47] I've setup the LDAP pam stuff like this http://paste.ubuntu.com/56262/ but it doesn't work (getent passwd' doesn't ). Can someone tell me what is missing? [11:48] * ("getent passwd" doesn't show the LDAP users, only the local ones, and if I try to login with my local user I get asked for "LDAP Password" after the local password -but leaving it empty the login still works- and LDAP users get rejected after asking for the local password) [11:58] oh, works now [11:59] debconf had a ldapi:/// at the start of the URI, that was causing the problem [12:02] well, I see the users now with getent, but I still have the login problems [12:18] Is there any way so that I don't get asked the local password for users which only exist on LDAP? (ie, I changed "auth sufficient pam_ldap.so" to "auth sufficient pam_ldap.so use_first_password" and now I can login with local users without getting asked the LDAP users, but if I login with an LDAP user it still asks me the local password -which I can leave empty- and then the LDAP one) [12:21] How easy is it to run an apache web server on ubuntu? [12:22] rexibit: very easy :) [12:23] oo, so I can run ubuntu at home and run it off my DSL? [12:23] rexibit: for Apache + PHP + MySQL, iirc "sudo aptitude install libapache2-mod-php5 php5-mysql" should do it [12:23] rexibit: sure :) [12:24] or apt-get install lamp-server^ [12:24] or use tasksel to see what other easy servre options you have [12:24] server* [12:24] rexibit: and then if you want you can sign up on dyndns.org and use ddclient to have a nice URL always pointing to your PC [12:24] Deeps: uhm.. that doesn't seem to work here (Hardy) [12:25] the ^ is necessary [12:25] specifies that it's a task, rather than a package [12:26] oh ok [12:26] Ah, thanks. [12:26] tasksel is nice though [12:26] shows all the other easy install options available to you [12:26] ssh, mail, web, print, file, and on [12:26] indeed, didn't know about it :) [12:27] tasksel --help if you dont like curses environments too [12:27] what is a curses environment? [12:27] rexibit: that what you see if you run "tasksel" [12:27] that pseudo graphical type environment, blue background, checkboxes, etc. [12:28] sort of a GUI for command line [12:28] ah, like the command promt [12:28] rexibit: have you ever used the alternate install? [12:29] I have never set up a server before (I'm a bit noobish) [12:30] (Doesn't anyone here know how to setup LDAP Authentication? I can't get it to only ask once for the password..) [12:39] I seem to be having a hard time getting modssl to do what it is supposed to do... I fallowed a wiki howto twice and googled some boards, but still keep on getting: ssl_error_rx_record_too_lon in FF | could it be that I've screwed up on my vHost.conf? here's the paste: http://paste.ubuntuusers.de/392345/ | I'd be very greatfull for a little push thx [12:40] hello [12:41] I've got a quite serious problem with installing Ubuntu server 8.04.1 64 on a sun xfire 2100 (supported hardware) [12:41] here is what I did: [12:41] I've manually setup the partitions, with a LVM over software raid1, and then installed [12:41] sadly the installation got interrupted, my CD was corrupt [12:42] a couple of memcheck, md5 checks, a download etc later, I retry to install [12:42] when going to the partitioner, it shows up the 2 disks, setup as RAID devices, but no raid [12:42] then I go to configure raid, and it shows me a raid called something_md1 [12:43] (which didnt appear before) [12:43] so I go back, without changing anything, and I get a new raid device, the one I configured in my previous install, setup as LVM - sadly i can NOT delete it (it says its being in use) [12:44] then I can change the type of the disks the raid is supposed to be based on, and change them to ext3 [12:44] leaving the partitioner in a completely inconsistent state (2 disks, partitioned as ext3, and a raid1 on top of it, with LVM) [12:45] even if I leave the raid and try to use it, the installer complains that "it couldnt read the raid table partition" and I should reboot before using it [12:45] now the bad part is, no matter how many times I reboot, that "dead" raid is still there, I can't delete it, and it's blocking me badly [12:45] any suggestion? :( [12:46] oups wrong button. [13:10] what is a good alternative to cpanel that you use on ubuntu? [13:11] I don't have the $425 to purchase a liscense [13:12] rexibit: I use Webmin and like it a lot. It probably doesn't have all of the functionality, but it does what it can quite well. [13:12] Does it have a good webmail? [13:14] rexibit: I've played around with a webmail a bit, but I don't have any comparison on whether it's 'good' or not. [13:14] rexibit: Another alternative is ISPConfig [13:14] Okay, thanks. =) I will look into them. How quick is webmin to install? [13:15] there's also http://www.vhcs.net/ and some other which I can't remember (but I haven't tried them) [13:16] rexibit: wbmin is in the repos [13:16] ooo [13:16] uhm.. or at least it was, I can't find it now :S [13:16] rexibit: I usually use the .deb package from Webmin's website - it's usually a versino or two ahead of the repos [13:17] Webmin looks to run on unix though. [13:18] ISPConfig is linux though =) [13:18] rexibit: GNU/Linux is Unix-like, and webmin definitely works on Ubuntu [13:20] rexibit: The Debian package is what you're looking for. here's the link: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/webadmin/webmin_1.430_all.deb [13:20] thanks =) [13:23] !webmin [13:23] webmin is no longer supported in Debian and Ubuntu. It is not compatible with the way that Ubuntu packages handle configuration files, and is likely to cause unexpected issues with your system. See !ebox instead. [13:23] !ebox [13:23] ebox is a web-based GUI interface for administering a server. It is designed to work with Ubuntu/Debian style configuration management. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/eBox [13:23] FYI [13:24] Adoleo / RainCT [13:24] Oh OK. I was wondering why it isn't in the repos anymore.. :) [13:27] Hmm, do you use Cron jobs with it? [13:37] ubottu: I'm still actively using Webmin with Hardy, and I haveb't had any problems yet. [13:37] Error: I am only a bot, please don't think I'm intelligent :) [13:37] lol [13:37] Oh. [13:38] lol [13:38] cute [13:38] for the people interested, it seems i have found my issue, why i can not delete that raid array in the partitionair [13:38] Deeps: Ebox sounds interesting, though, I'll check it out. [13:38] ubottu: don't be sad. [13:38] Sorry, I don't know anything about don't be sad. [13:38] it seems the raid is being rebuilt (!?), the rebuilt being started before i get a change to delete it during the install [13:38] waiting for the rebuild to finish to try to delete it now.,... [13:40] Deeps: Okay, ebox looks pretty cool, actually. Thanks for letting me know about it! When I upgrade to Intrepid I'll use that instead. [13:41] np [14:00] What's ebox in relation to ubuntu (I have only heard of the stan alone ebox platform) [14:04] Oh, ebox is based on ubuntu now... I thought it was redhat or centos! === lamont` is now known as lamont [16:46] is spamassassin supposed to write something in /var/log/mail.log? [16:46] when scanning an email I mean [16:47] I see no X-Spam headers at the end, and actually I'm not even sure amavis does use it [17:30] no one using spamassassin here? :-) [18:44] kirkland: np, sucks getting ganged up on like that :) [18:56] so, it seems my spamassassin doesn't work... I see "spamd: server started on port 783/tcp" in mail.log, but nothing when a mail is processed. I followed the server guide doc, any idea what could be wrong? [18:59] Adri2000: are you using amavisd-new? [19:00] yes [19:01] Do messages have a X-Spam, or something similar, in the header? [19:01] only X-Virus-Scanned (I use clamav for virus scanning). no X-Spam* [19:02] not even on outside addresses? [19:03] didn't try, but as I said, I see nothing about spamd in the log when a mail is processed, so I guess there is something wrong between amavis and spamassassin [19:04] is there a way I can make sure whether spamassassin is used or not? [19:05] there's an option you can lower, one sec I forget which one it is [19:06] Adri2000: what is your $sa_tag_level_deflt option in /etc/amavis/conf.d/20-debian_defaults? [19:06] $sa_tag_level_deflt = 2.0; [19:07] try lowering it and restarting amavisd-new [19:10] sommer: still no X-Spam* [19:10] and mail.log still says amavis[9678]: (09678-01) Passed CLEAN, LOCAL [19:10] but nothing about spam [19:12] (with $sa_tag_level_deflt = -50.0;) [19:14] try $sa_tag2_level_deflt [19:18] hmm, still no headers [19:18] but log says now : amavis[10366]: (10366-01) Passed SPAMMY, LOCAL [19:19] so that would mean spamassassin indeed does something in the process [19:24] Adri2000: yep, should be working... you might also try setting the $mydomain option specifically in 50-user [19:25] basically the amavis uses the machines hostname and domain name, but depening on your setup, your mail may be different [19:33] ok, thanks for your help [19:36] np [21:03] Hello, does anyone knows how can I install GUI (X) on my ubuntu-server and be able to control the server via gui from my desktop ? === Adri2000_ is now known as Adri2000 [22:11] w
