bsnidercd00:00
bruce89Aquaraptor: not many people downloading the daily image, so torrents would be useless00:00
Aquaraptoroh? it's CD?00:00
Aquaraptorthe ibex beta images I saw were all DVD00:00
Aquaraptorhuh.00:00
bsnideruh...ok00:00
eXoniusDVD images?00:00
Aquaraptorlike, an ISO image for a DVD-R00:00
Aquaraptor4GB00:00
eXoniusYes00:00
eXoniusI thought we talked about jpeg files and stuff :D00:01
Aquaraptorhahah00:01
bruce89with at least all of main on i00:01
Aquaraptorwell a DVD going at 1MB/s will still take 2 hours to download, so I'll get a CD image00:01
Aquaraptorone thing I do wonder, is there any real advantage to getting the 64bit build? I'm not using more than 4GB RAM or anything00:02
eXoniusI thought it had to do with the processor unit00:02
bruce89Aquaraptor: yes00:02
Aquaraptorwhat is it?00:02
Aquaraptorfrom what I've heard you don't get much of a performance gain00:03
bruce89Aquaraptor: AMD64 has SSE2 as default00:03
Aquaraptoras long as the same software runs on both with no issues all go ahead and get it00:03
bruce89It's worth it for futureproofing00:03
Aquaraptorhuh; ok.00:03
bruce89Depends how much you like non-free stuff though00:04
Aquaraptorand I do00:04
AquaraptorFOSS makes 0% difference to me00:04
eXoniusIs there any Ubuntu support pro here that can help me? :D00:04
AquaraptorI like mah MP3s, M4As, and MP4s, thxvrymuch :)00:04
bruce89that's fine00:05
bsnideri'm guessing you're not richard stallman then00:05
Aquaraptorvery much no00:05
AquaraptorI like to be operating system generic00:05
bruce89Aquaraptor: all those codecs are in fact FOSS00:05
AquaraptorI have computers running windows, osx, os9, unixes, everything00:05
bruce89legally a bit dodgy though00:05
Aquaraptorbruce89, that;s cool too, as long as they play my media ;)00:05
Aquaraptorwhat I've found is if you try and use a bit of everything you get a better view or what does what best, not necessarily what is "better"00:06
AkariChanodd00:06
bruce89Aquaraptor: such as00:06
AkariChanibex are CDs, as far as i saw them00:06
kulightAquaraptor: im with you first everything needs to work then will talk ideology00:06
Aquaraptorkulight, *exactly*00:07
AquaraptorAkariChan, I guess the DVDs I saw were some option then00:07
Aquaraptorlemme get the link again00:07
bruce89I'm interested as to what non-free stuff you'd want to use00:07
Aquaraptorbruce89, well I was under the impression that the codecs were non-free, as I've had to add non-free sources before to get them00:08
bruce89not as such00:08
Aquaraptorinteresting00:08
bruce89patent non-free, but the source is there00:08
bruce89under a free licence00:09
kulightif the codecs are free why they are not in the default intasll ?00:09
Aquaraptorhttp://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/intrepid/beta/ <- are the DVD torrents and images I found00:09
bruce89kulight: they are legally dodgy00:09
Aquaraptorhuh00:09
bruce89kulight: patents and so on00:09
kulightso they are not open source00:09
Aquaraptorwell I hope in ibex it's easier to add them, I remember having to jump through a few hoops in hardy00:09
bruce89kulight: depends which ones you mean00:10
bruce89lame, faad are00:10
jianfeikulight: how to install the codecs00:10
Jordan_Ukulight: They are Free in countries that don't have horrible patent laws :)00:10
AkariChanAquaraptor: sure.00:10
Aquaraptorkulight, there can be open source things with shady licenses, though00:10
bruce89screw patent law00:10
bruce89and hope for Dirac00:10
AkariChanAquaraptor: those are CD images.00:10
Aquaraptorfor example they might have open sources, but the owners might say "not to be included in any operating systems by default ever" in the license00:11
AquaraptorAkariChan, show me a cd capable of holding 4.1GB of data :P00:11
kulightone of the first things i do after a new install is installing ubuntu-restricted-extras and the medibuntu repos00:11
Aquaraptor(without ridiculous compression)00:11
bruce89I don't00:11
bruce89they install a load of nonsense00:11
bruce89such as the non-free Java, when there's a free one00:11
bsniderbruce89, screw all IP "law" -- but an unjust law i not a law at all. we might have to follow it due to the fear of violent reprisal, but that doesn't make unjust laws just00:12
AkariChanwhy not?00:12
kulightfree java is buggy00:12
bruce89don't care00:12
AkariChana good example is windows.00:12
AkariChanfully installed takes 2.8Gb.00:12
bruce89and also, it WORKSFORME00:12
Aquaraptoryeah I get sun java myself00:12
kulighti do00:12
Aquaraptorthen again there are about 5 java applets I *ever* use00:13
Jordan_Ukulight: Sun Java IS Free AFIK00:13
bruce89Jordan_U: nope00:13
bruce89not yet00:13
AkariChanAquaraptor: if you have ever seen ripkits of games (not that i wanted to talk about piracy here). a 1.2Gb uha rip of a game will expand to 8.4Gb installed.00:13
Jordan_Ubruce89: Still?00:13
bruce89OpenJdk is though00:13
* Jordan_U sighs00:13
AquaraptorAkariChan, then why distribute the DVDs at all?00:13
bruce89Aquaraptor: no internet access perhaps00:13
Aquaraptorso that would be like downloading the plethora of debian ISOs, I presume00:14
Jordan_UAquaraptor: The DVD's contain all of main00:14
AquaraptorJordan_U, aha ok, thanks for clarifying00:14
AkariChanAquaraptor: there will be MORE programs in it?00:14
AkariChansimply that.00:14
kulightdoes any one know if the current version of the kernel in ibex is the final release ?00:15
Aquaraptormore... that are installed by default or are merely available for isntall through apt (ie the DVD is in the aptsoruces file)00:15
bruce89only useful if you are installing somewhere without net access00:15
bsniderkulight, yes00:15
bruce89otherwise it's a waste of quota00:15
kulightthats realy bad :(00:16
bsniderkulight, that's your view. this kernel is the greatest piece of technology in the world00:17
* Aquaraptor is happy to have a local no-name brand ISP with no quotas and 1.5mega-bytes- down 00:17
kulightand problematic cose there are many HP laptops that wont work00:17
bruce89Aquaraptor: bytes?00:17
kulightbsnider: u got me wrong00:17
AkariChanAquaraptor: think of it as the whole repository (non-updated) will be in the DVD00:17
kulighton my desktop its realy great00:17
Aquaraptorbruce89, you heard me!00:17
bsniderkulight, the current kernel is the final 2.6.27 release. the kernel team will be bugfixing it until intrepid is released though00:18
Aquaraptor1.5megabytes a second down.00:18
Aquaraptorsomething like 11megabits, whatever 1.5 x 8 is.00:18
Aquaraptor(13)00:18
kulighti hope they do00:18
bruce89Aquaraptor: here they like changing the speed00:18
bruce89can be 110 Kb/s00:18
rom1vif this problem is not resolved : https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/26990400:18
bruce89up to ~50000:18
ubottuLaunchpad bug 269904 in nvidia-graphics-drivers-177 "Screen refresh problems with nvidia on intrepid" [Medium,Confirmed]00:18
Aquaraptormine is nice an consistant, no busy hours or anything like that00:18
rom1vI hope compiz OR nvidia will be downgraded?00:18
bruce89and a 30 GB limit per month00:18
bsniderkulight, you _might_ consider submitting a bug for your problem00:19
Aquaraptorunfortuantely I only get 70kilobytes a second up, so my server gets stressed at times00:19
kulightbsnider: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/26206600:19
ubottuLaunchpad bug 262066 in linux "CPU throttled to 12% with kernel 2.6.27" [Undecided,New]00:19
bruce89the other houses' traffic is monitored too00:20
kulightbsnider: this and its dupes00:20
bruce89for advertising that is00:20
bsniderkulight, well there you go! the system works!00:20
kulightmy system still dosent :(00:21
bsnidermaybe next time you shouldn't buy from hewlett crapperd00:21
Aquaraptorhar har har00:21
kulightsorry i got that one for free i didnt choose00:22
bsnidercall hp's help desk and demand that the issue be fixed by them00:22
kulightbut its no reason for it not to work00:22
kulightwindows and hardy works00:23
bsniderhow do you know it's a kernel problem?00:23
kulightcose 2.6.26 worked fine00:23
bsnideri'm not convinced00:24
bsniderhave you used top or system monitor to find what the cpu is doing?00:24
kulightim not the only one with that conclution look at the bug report00:24
kulightyes its stuck at 800MHz instead of 1.800:25
zyrorl:(00:26
zyrorli just wish wireless support wasn't broken for intel wireless cards00:26
bsniderkulight, you could try booting the fedora snapshot cd that was released today00:27
kulightif it uses 2.6.27 i will try00:28
bsniderit does00:28
kulightok ill try tomarow its getting late00:28
zyrorli can't get wpa to work on my intel wireless on intrepid with a lot of networks00:29
zyrorlworks on some but not others00:29
zyrorlwhen it used to have no problemso n hardy00:29
kulightthank u it will help narrowing the problem00:29
zyrorlwell i'm not sure if its the wpa supplicant , dhclient or the wireless driver, one of them is fubar00:30
bsniderzyrorl, if it's network-manager, you could try wicd instead00:30
zyrorlwicd didnt solve it00:31
zyrorlbasically it looks like the wpa authenticates, but it can't obtain an ip00:31
zyrorlso it gives up00:31
bsnideryou tried changing wpa supplicant drivers for it?00:31
zyrorlthough when i connect directly to the modem using lan, it'll work, if i turn off wpa, it works00:31
zyrorlif i set the ip to manual00:31
zyrorlit also works, though no traffic comes through for about 60 seconds00:31
zyrorland then it works, but its kinda unstable00:32
zyrorli don't know how to change the supplicant drivers..00:32
zyrorli'm using a intel wireless 4965AGN card00:32
zyrorlatm its using the iwlagn driver00:32
bsniderit's in wicd00:32
zyrorli'll have to try00:32
bsniderno, do or do not, there is no try00:33
zyrorli will do:P00:33
zyrorlbrb00:33
JangariI'm having a screen resolution problem. When I try to use an external monitor at its highest resolution (1650x1050 or so) I'm asked to enable virtual resolution settings in xorg.conf, and it does it for me, but then it screws the entire xsession and I can't see anything except for a background of vertical stripes roughly resembling the colours in intrepid, and a mouse.00:34
Jangarihow can i get the highest res out of my monitor without screwing my xsession?00:35
AkariChananyone had any idea where can i find the .config of intrepid?00:38
d4t4min3ri have a question00:40
d4t4min3ri had my compiz.real crash00:40
d4t4min3rthats what it told me00:40
Jangariit recovers00:41
d4t4min3rthis is a known issue?00:42
d4t4min3rit seems that compiz is still working properly00:42
Jangariexactly00:43
Jangariit's happened to me a few times. It looks like firefox or whatever crashes, but a minute later everythings working again (although all on a single workspace) and it tells you that compiz.real crashed00:44
DanaGiwlagn.... iw laggin'. =รพ00:45
Jangarican i force ubuntu to allow more screen resolutions by literally writing them into the xorg.conf?00:45
bruce89AkariChan: .config?00:46
DanaGHow would I go about getting Pulse 0.9.13 on my own box?00:46
zyrorlargh00:47
zyrorlbsnider - no go00:47
zyrorlthe only wpa supplicant that even tries to connect is WEXT00:47
zyrorlit gets stuck at obtaining an ip address00:47
zyrorland i tried choosing the different DHCP clients00:47
zyrorlnone worked00:47
DanaGOdd... my root is full, and it didn't warn me.00:48
Jordan_UDanaG: Do you have a separate /home ?00:50
Kattollikisdis the 8.10 good?00:50
AkariChani meant .config as in the .config for the kernel00:50
AkariChanbut nevermind that, i guess i had a copy00:51
AkariChan:_00:51
AkariChan:)00:51
zyrorlgrr:(00:51
Jangariit has a few bugs at the moment Kattollikisd, but it's also better in a few areas so far00:51
zyrorli hate this issues00:51
zyrorld4t4min3r - yeah i've been getting compiz.real crashes as well00:51
AkariChanquick question, step wise, make menuconfig , then make, make modules_install, make install00:51
AkariChanis that correct for the kernel building?00:52
DanaGYeah, /home is separate.00:52
KattollikisdI hate bugs :(00:52
sarirjockey closes all the time00:52
sariri cannot activate my drivers00:52
DanaGAah, no wonder it's full... time for me to remove nexuiz.00:52
KattollikisdJangari, is theres bugs easy to fix?00:52
sarirnvidia graphic driver (no the 177 recommended one and no the 173 version)00:53
Jangariprobably for some00:53
sariranybody can help me?00:53
DanaGOr maybe just sudo aptitude clean.00:53
KattollikisdJangari, ohhh00:53
* zyrorl thinks wireless is fubar in intrepid:(00:53
Mimiwicd  all the way  :)00:53
zyrorlmimi - done that00:53
zyrorlstill fubar00:53
Mimipoo :(00:53
Jordan_UDanaG: File a bug report, there is probably a bug in the way that the check for a full file system is being done that doesn't take into account multiple partitions00:53
zyrorlwont get an ip address00:53
bruce89doesn't help hardware/kernel bugs00:53
zyrorlexact same issue as network manager00:53
Jangarii needed a fresh installation badly, my system was full of redundant software, issues, bugs and so on. Now i have a half-workable beta system00:53
zyrorli have tried fresh install, tried upgrade00:54
zyrorlboth fail00:54
zyrorl:(00:54
Mimicoudlnt you have waited another month? :P00:54
zyrorldoesnt mean it'll be fixed by then00:54
bsnidersarir, yeah, yeah00:54
Jangarino00:54
Jordan_Uzyrorl: What chipset?00:54
zyrorlit seems to work on some wpa networks, some work00:54
bruce89I upgraded about 2 months ago, it was fine00:54
Jangaricouldn't00:54
zyrorlintel 4965 AGN00:54
sarirbsnider, what? is there something i can do?00:55
KattollikisdJangari, I really don't know If I gonna do those upgrade to the 8.10, I had a really bad experience with the 7.10 to 8.0400:55
Jangariat least intrepid supports dual-connections now, wired and wireless00:55
zyrorlif i disable the wpa, it works fine00:55
sarirbsnider, is it a bug?00:55
zyrorlJangari thats true00:55
bsnidersarir, explain your problem in detail please00:55
Jangarii hated having to disconnect from one to connect to the other00:55
zyrorlit also supports a third or more connections:)00:56
Jangarii might try installing these 237 software updates and see if it fixes some of the issues00:56
Jangarioh, great!00:56
sarirbsnider, i just need to activate the graphic driver nvidia00:56
zyrorli was able to use my HSDPA card, at the same time as ethernet and wireless00:56
zyrorlwhich was nice00:56
Jangarii wonder if you can direct certain ports through certain connections00:56
zyrorli dontk now00:56
zyrorlits not configurable00:56
bsnidersarir, which graphics card do you have?00:56
Jangariwhat about vpn?00:56
zyrorlfrom the gui00:56
zyrorlvpn works too00:56
sarirsystem-driver hardware bsnider and then i have two options nvidia graphics driver 173 or 177 recommended00:56
Jangariout of the box?00:56
zyrorlsupposedly it'll use whatever your default gateway is00:57
zyrorlyeah00:57
zyrorlwell00:57
zyrorlno00:57
DanaGOne thing NetworkManger also can't do:00:57
Jangarioh sweet, i see00:57
zyrorlyou have to install network-manager-pptp or openvnc00:57
zyrorlopenvpn even00:57
zyrorland vpnc00:57
DanaGYou can't set which network profiles use which NIC.00:57
zyrorlbut other than that yeah00:57
bsnidersarir, i need to know the exact card you've got in there00:57
Jangariwell, it has the option for vpn connections right there00:57
DanaGSo, if you have multiple NICs, you're out of luck.00:57
zyrorlDanaG - you can always mess with routing tables00:57
sarirbsnider, give me a command please00:57
zyrorlits not that bad a deal00:57
bsniderlspci00:57
Jangariso as long as you have the docs from the network, it should work00:57
DanaGWhenever I plug in my ethernet cable, it tries to connect as a client on br0.... which does not contain that ethernet port!00:58
sarir!paste00:58
ubottupastebin is a service to post multiple-lined texts so you don't flood the channel. The Ubuntu pastebin is at http://paste.ubuntu.com (make sure you give us the URL for your paste - see also the channel topic)00:58
DanaGlspci -nn is more useful.00:58
DanaGn twice, for name and number.00:58
Phlostenhowdy all00:58
DanaGSo, wired networking doesn't work on cable insertion.  It's rather annoying.00:58
zyrorlseriously though... anyone got any ideas on how i can get around this wpa issue in intrepid?00:58
sarirbsnider, http://paste.ubuntu.com/56482/00:58
zyrorldanag:(00:58
DanaGMy br0 is the NAT-ed bridge I attach my VMs to.00:58
zyrorltried wicd?00:58
Jangariokay, I might go and take a ride while my upgrades are downloading00:59
DanaGI'm the host.... so why is it trying to connect as a client?00:59
bruce89zyrorl: not again00:59
Jangarior, while my downgrades are uploading00:59
DanaGI set my WPA2 network to be a "System Setting".00:59
bsnidersarir, alright now run dkms status00:59
zyrorlbruce89 - i've tried pretty much everything i've read up on on ubuntuforums00:59
DanaGI also removed and then re-added the profile before making it a "System Setting"00:59
zyrorland nothing helps00:59
zyrorli've even reset the modem settings from scratch just incase00:59
sarirbsnider, the dkms is not installed01:00
zyrorlits almost annoying enough to have to downgrade back to hardy:S01:00
sariri'll do it now01:00
bruce89zyrorl: I meant saying "try wicd", you're the 3rd to say that now01:00
zyrorli've done that01:01
zyrorlif you read up01:01
zyrorli've tried wicd01:01
zyrorlsame problem01:01

sarirbsnider, what i should do now?01:01
zyrorldoesnt get an ip if trying to connect to wpa01:01

DanaGDid it not before?01:24
zyrorli'm pretty happy with evolution01:24
burnerDanaG: it was just slow01:24
zyrorli think its mostly better than thunderbird, especially for exchange support01:24
DanaGHandy thing I did: link Evolution calendars to Thunderbird / Sunbird calendars.01:25
burnerinteresting... i'm curious about this... how well does your exchange supoprt work?01:25

zyrorlburner really? i haven't got any issues, did you mean as in lose email when sending? i find that for some reason it puts sent email in the local mail box folder01:26

RAOFsoreau: fglrx doesn't support Xserver 1.5.  Furthermore, it diverts libdri, and installs an older version which means Xorg won't start at all while fglrx is installed.04:13

Cycomsoreau: also, I have a desktop running windows for gaming, so that's a non-issue04:19
soreauCycom: That is not the point04:19
Cycombah. that'll change.04:19
Cycomthe OS drivers will catch up04:19
soreauThe point is, the driver should implement these features04:19
soreauCycom: It's nice to know that they've made it as far as the X1400, but still, much work needs to be done04:20
Cycom*shrug* true that04:20

nhorningyes10:07
zyrorlbtw wicd wont work either10:07
nhorningnetwork manager doesn't work10:07
zyrorli tested that as well10:07

Jordan_Unhorning: Doesn't work in what way?10:07
nhorningand wicd is about to unistall it once I hit y10:07
wgrantnhorning: Then we should probably fix Network Manager, rather than installing something else...10:07
wgrant!doesn't work | nhorning10:08
ubottunhorning: Doesn't work is a strong statement. Does it sit on the couch all day? Does it want more money? Is it on IRC all the time? Please be specific! Examples of what doesn't work tend to help too.10:08
nhorningyeah10:08
nhorningit does all of those things...10:08
nhorninglook it tries to connect10:08
nhorningbut when it gets to "requesting network address"10:08

nhorningok,10:12
wgrantzyrorl: OK, what if you run wpa_supplicant manually and then dhclient? If not, it's probably a kernel bug, so I'll triage it10:12
nhorningso in the meantime I'm installing wicd10:13
zyrorlwell i tried sudo dhclient wlan010:13
nhorningI'm one key stroke away..10:13

hyperairfincan: i don't, but i've done one on hardy before. what seems to be the problem?10:16
zyrorlmy router doesn't have wmm support10:16
zyrorli dont believe10:16
hyperairzyrorl: ah yes, it's a different bug. sorry10:16
nhorninghmm, when I tried to install wicd from a chroot10:17
fincanhyperair: I have problem about dual-boot, there is no problem with ubuntu boot after grub xp selection, it is frozen10:17
nhorningit says usr/bin/dpk returned an error code (1)10:17

nhorningok, I'm going to see if I can finish the install from the ibex gui10:18
hyperairfincan: xp? okay, dual boot i haven't tried.10:18
fincanhyperair: thx anyway10:19
hyperairfincan: you're doing RAID using mdadm right?10:19
hyperairdoes windows xp even support that?10:19
fincanhyperair: installed with dmraid10:19
hyperairhuh dmraid? how did you configure it?10:20
hyperairwell, that's the first time i've heard of dmraid10:20
hyperairi only use mdadm before10:20
fincanhyperair: it is very easy to config and install,  http://wiki.auzigog.com/My_Ubuntu_(7.10)_Installation10:21
KR-dataafter upgrading I get this message when trying to log on http://paste.ubuntu.com/56581/ What can I do?10:21
fincanhyperair: there was a painfully bug between linux and raid for 2 years, but finally it is over, now this boot problem is new :)10:22
hyperairwhat bug?10:22
fincanhyperair: after livecd boot, 1 hdd of the raid0 members goes to offline and seems as broken10:23
fincanhyperair: with 8.10 beta it is pver10:23
fincanhyperair: from 7.04 till 8.10 long period huh? :)10:24
hyperairoh well, i've never really tried with raid-110:24
hyperairsorry10:25
hyperairi mean i've only doen with raid-110:25
hyperairnot raid-010:25
hyperairif i wanted raid-0 i'd just use lvm10:25
hyperairmuch easier to configure than raid10:25
zyrorlhyperair i-m just burning a copy of ubuntu now10:25
zyrorlhardy10:25
fincanhyperair: the guide I used is so easy ,you should check it :)10:26
zyrorli'll be putting the logs up, you be around in about 15 mins?10:26
hyperairzyrorl: i will.10:26
hyperairfincan: no, lvm is easier to manage in a long run. i looked at your guide already10:26
zyrorlthanks for your help so far btw, i appreciate it10:26
hyperairfincan: and mdadm looks to be easier to handle than dmraid10:26
hyperairfincan: either way i wouldn't touch raid on a non-server system. between data redundancy and maximizing the storage i have, i pick the latter10:27
fincanhyperair: well can I install ubuntu with mdadm easily as weel as the my used guide?10:27
zyrorlbesides you can get decent enough backups using incremental backups just store them ona n external drive or nfs10:28
hyperairfincan: yes.10:28
hyperairfincan: but as usual, windows is the foreign factor10:28
hyperairyou never know whether it will or will not work10:28
hyperairstupid damn thing.10:29
fincanyeah my problem is dualboot10:29
hyperairzyrorl: i don't have enough backup media for that kind of stuff.10:29
fincanand I ll try it too :)10:29
zyrorlstorage is cheap and plentiful these days10:29
KR-dataok, seems that my only choise is to bugreport and downgrade10:29
KR-datahow do I go back to 8.0410:29
KR-data?10:29
hyperairzyrorl: i'm a cheapskate person.10:29
zyrorlah10:29
zyrorlstudent?10:29
fincanhyperair: any other guide, or I can install it like dmraid guide?10:29
hyperairdifferent10:30
hyperairbut there are guides, yes10:30
hyperairin fact, most of the guides for RAID on linux will use mdadm10:30
hyperairhowever, i noticed that dmraid has support for software bios raid, whatever that is10:30
hyperairmdadm is only software raid10:30
zyrorlokay brb i'm going to chuck hardy livecd on:)10:30
hyperairzyrorl: okay10:30
zyrorlbooting up now10:33
zyrorlannoyingly enough another annoying issue i get is rdesktop is a pain in thea rse now you can't go from full screen to windowed anymore10:33
hyperairi didn't know it was possible to begin with10:35
zyrorlill log that one later10:35
KR-dataanyone who knows how I switch from gdm to kdm?10:35
zyrorlyeah you go altctrl enter10:35
hyperairKR-data: sudo dpkg-reconfigure kdm i think10:36
KR-datadoesn't work, have tried :(10:36

zyrorlthere you go10:39

zyrorlas you can see on line 49 event too big comes up but its not a problem ing etting a dhcp address10:40
KR-datacould someon tell me either how to go back to 8.04 or how to fix that xmodmap problem??10:41
hyperairzyrorl: lemme take al ook10:43
hyperairzyrorl: WMM is enabled on your router10:43
hyperairzyrorl: see lines 50-5410:43
zyrorlmm weird i dont think i can turn it off though10:43
zyrorlassuming i could, why would it work fine in a previous version and not on the latest10:44
hyperairzyrorl: regression.10:45
hyperairzyrorl: basically it's the same bug as i pointed out earlier10:45
zyrorlwhich bug sorry?10:45
zyrorlokay i've turned off wmm, found it under qos settings10:45
zyrorldo you think that'll fix the issue though?10:46
hyperairwell you could always try10:48
zyrorli'll reboot it back into intrepid see if it makes a difference10:48

Hobbseeok, good.  that counts as useful12:42
Hobbseeyou're connecting a wifi card - presumably that's flashing and alive?12:42
Hobbseeor at least showing an LED?12:42
nhorningwell12:43
nhorningI'm pretty sure12:43
nhorningit's internal12:43
Hobbseefair enough12:43
nhorningbut look, I can see all the available connection12:43
nhornings12:43
nhorningboth the network managers I've used have shown them to me12:43
Hobbseeoh, what encryption is it using?12:43
nhorningI'm in net cafe's12:44

nhorningI'm in korea12:44
Hobbseeso, if you sudo killall NetworkManager, iwconfig wifi0 essid <network name>, then run sudo dhclient wifi0, does it get you an address?12:45

Hobbseei figured.  try it :)12:45
nhorningoh12:45
nhorningI've done that with everything but the kill all12:45
nhorningwhen I try to connect manually it gives me12:46
Hobbseenm won't let you take over the interface if it's still alive12:46
nhorningok12:46
Hobbseelast i checked, anyway12:46
nhorningso I have to try it with sudo killa all12:46

nhorningsudo iwconfig <interface> mode Managed12:47
nhorningsudo dhclient <interface>12:47
nhorningI put in wifi0 where it said interface12:47
nhorningI thought maybe I should also try it with wlan012:47
ibbuntuit appears that my home folder's 'Open with...' was associated with 'alien' rather than 'Open Folder'. Why did this happen on upgrading to Intrepid?12:48
Hobbseenhorning: iwconfig will tell you which interface it regards as the real one12:49
Hobbseebut that should be working12:49
nhorningwell, it says my wireless card it's self is wlan012:50
nhorningbut when I connect through the live cd12:50
nhorningand use my network tools to look up my interfaces12:50
nhorningonly wlan0 has and ip12:50
nhorningand wifi0 says "unknown device"12:50
nhorningerr, unknown interface12:51
Hobbseeright, so it's rpobably wlan012:51
nhorningok, I'm going to try to connect manually with wlan012:52
nhorningnetwork tools is calling that my wireless Interface in both installations12:52
nhorningbut when I do the lshw -C or whatever12:52
nhorningit says my wireless card is wifi012:53
Hobbseestrange12:53
nhorningbut in hardy it connects12:54
nhorningand in ibex it doesn't12:54
nhorningso should I try to connect manually using both the wifi012:54
nhorningand the wlan0?12:54
nhorningok12:56
nhorningseeing no response, I will go do that.12:56

linnyhmm youll prolly need to find an ethernet cable some place14:05
mrocStevko: any ideas where to start?14:05
W8TAHhi folks - fiddling around again -- doin an inplace upgrade of kubuntu 8.06 (kde) using the instructions online - tell it the kdesudo "adept_manager --dist_upgrade_devel" comand and the process starts and gets as far as the section on preparing for the upgrade adn then it vanishes14:05
linnymps002: did you follow is instructions to fix them ?14:06
W8TAHtried running from console  -no error messages - -it just stops without any indication of what might be wrong14:06
Stevkomroc: not really. First idea was that keybord does not work at all, but as I see it is not so.14:06
mps002linny: yeah, I tried, but it didn't work14:06
StevkoAkariChan: I believe that some file manager (maybe krusader) can do it.14:07
mrocStevko: keyboard shows no input, but it does function.  i don't really have a place to start.  i've run the update through the recovery kernel boot option but no fix.14:07
wtgeeHello...anyone know how to turn off the touchpad while typing?14:08
mps002wait, now I'm not sure how to fix the broken packages, do I need to download anything, or shouldn't they be archived? I haven't apt-get cleaned in a long time14:10

wgrantwtgee: Hmm, I just realised that my solution is probably broken as of Friday night. I'll fix it now.14:13
wtgeewgrant: No worries, just let me know and I can test.14:13

bpat1182I'm trying to install 8.10 on my AMD 64 desktop, and when it finishes, (1) it spits out the CD but then immediately pulls it back in and locks the drive so I have to manually retrieve it (i.e. with a paperclip) and (2) it boots up to a point where it says "GRUB _" and the underscore blinks.... how can I fix it?14:24
wgrantwtgee: Grab and install http://people.ubuntuwire.com/~fujitsu/xserver-xorg-input-synaptics_0.15.2-0ubuntu4+wgrant1_i386.deb. Although it's a new driver, it's only one of the included executables that has been altered.14:28
wgrantwtgee: You can then follow https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SynapticsTouchpad#syndaemon14:29
wgrantwtgee: Except due to the changes in that package, you don't need to hack around and enable SHMConfig.14:29
wtgeewgrant: I should have mentioned I'm on 64bit, can I still use that driver?14:29
wgrantwtgee: There's a bug in some client->server X interactions we're trying to sort out that break this on amd64, unfortunately.14:30
wgrantWe'll hopefully have a fix within a few days, but it's proving rather hard to pin down.14:30

wgrantmroc: That's it. Those uploads of mine tripped up so many users. I'm quite pleased.14:45
mrocwgrant: haha - well that seems to have fixed the problem for me.  thank you so much for your help.14:46
wgrantmroc: We needed to break ABI without a proper ABI bump... so we needed some crafty Conflicts, Breaks and Depends, which would have had apt-get confused for about 3 hours.14:46

orbish1hello everyone14:56
wgrantshingoki: I think it might be able to be worked around with DRI2, but I really don't remember. Until then, you'll have to live with either a big Virtual, or DRI.14:56
shingokiwgrant: What's the nice way to get rid of it? It must have done it when I tried to get 1920x1200 on external monitor ;)14:56

DanaGLinux GLaDOS 2.6.27-7-generic #1 SMP Fri Oct 10 03:55:24 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux16:04
DanaGaah, latest is 7.  You'll need the related linux-image, linux-headers, and linux-restricted-modules packages.16:05
omarDanaG: So, how do you suggest I update? Is it possible to download the upate packages from the repository from another machine and then tranferring them to my laptop?16:05
neo14515any idea for the display issue ?16:05
DanaGYup.  You can just browse the repo manually.16:05
tab_shiftorbish: email this issue to this emailid xorg@lists.freedesktop.org16:05
mps002and ctl+alt+backspace does nothing to fix the problem16:05
DanaGThen put the .deb files on a flash drive, or such.16:05

neo14515no ctrl+backspace don't change anything16:06
omarDanaG: Great, can you give me a link, please?16:06
DanaGSure.16:07
neo14515I thought it was a bug caused by the advanced desktop feature but even when I disable them the proble is still here16:07
neo14515I don't think it's a pb related to xorg16:07
neo14515because everything was working fine under hardy16:07
mps002hey, can anyone help me, I'm having some major installation issues, I can't even get the livecd to startup, checked for defects and it says nothing is wrong with it16:07
wtgeemps002: Did you check the md5sum?16:08
neo14515did you burn the cd in low speed ?16:08
omarDanaG: r u there?16:08
DanaGomar: 32-bit, or 64-bit?16:09
mps002yeah, the problem is that I get all whitish output on the screen, I can hear the login sound play, but all I see is white16:09
DanaGI'm digging it up.16:09
omarDanaG: 32-bit.16:09

mps002tab_shift: but let me try again because it seemed to have frozen16:11
neo14515Any idea for the display issue ?16:11
orbishty16:11
wtgeemps002: Try this...and you won't be able to see anything....Alt-F2 and then "metacity --replace"16:11
DanaGThere may not be a restricted-modules package for that kernel version, but it should get you to boot and have ethernet, so you can upgrade the rest through console or through safe-mode Xorg.16:11
mps002wtgee: ok, hang on16:12
mps002maaaaan it takes long to boot from livecd16:13
wtgeemps002: If is going slow once you are up, wait a second or two after Alt-F2 just to be sure the dialog box has popped up...again, you won't see it16:14
mps002wtgee: I haven't noticed that's done anything, except that a new sound played16:15
k5ehxnew ubuntu beta desn't recognize my DVD player, USB ATA bridge is 0x05ab 0x0060. lsusb shows the bridge, but the DVD is not detected.16:15
mps002so I think it might have done something strange16:15
linnyany one had vlc problems in ibex ? i get a black screen with sound for the first few minutes of any video ?16:15
wtgeemps002: You gave it time to login and all that?  It probably won't work the exact second after you log in16:16
mps002wtgee: yeah, I gave it a little while16:16
neo14515for the vlc issue try to check what is you video rendering module16:16
neo14515you should put xv I think if you are using desktop effect16:17
mps002wtgee: is there any way I can just get it installed without having to download the alternate CD?16:17
linnyneo14515: how would one do that ? in the past vlc has "just worked" thats the good thing avout it imo16:17
wtgeemps002: You should be able to select an alternate install right upon booting the cd, at the same place you checked the cd for defects16:18
DanaGmplayer > vlc16:18
mps002wtgee: tried to use update manager to upgrade, it bonked my lappy, downloaded the CD, and it won't even start properly, just getting really frustrated with the whole thing16:18
k5ehxwhat should I check after lsusb to see whether a DVD is detected? Does it create a device somewhere?16:18
neo14515for the display did anyone have an idea of where I can look to diagnose the pb ?16:18
mps002wtgee: I'll check16:18
k5ehxneo14515: pb?16:19
wtgeemps002: It won't be the graphical installer though...I think that option is there on the beta cd.  anyone know if it is for sure?16:19
mps002wtgee: I'm not seeing it, unless you mean the OEM install option?16:19
neo14515pb=problem16:20
k5ehxneo14515: tools | preferences | video | output <- is that what you're looking for?16:20
neo14515no for me it's a display problem related to kde4 not vlc16:20
mps002wtgee: er, mode16:20
wtgeemps002: No, not the OEM.  What CD did yo download, the beta?16:21
neo14515it's linny who have troubles with vlc16:21
mps002wtgee: yeah, the amd64 desktop iso16:21
k5ehxmy mistake, neo14515 :-)16:21
neo14515no problem16:21
k5ehxlinny: tools | preferences | video | output <- is that what you're looking for?16:21
neo14515and for kde4 any idea of how to diagnose a display issue ?16:22
wtgeemps002: And there is no Ctrl-Alt-F1 either once you are in?16:22
linnyk5ehx: thank atm its set to default what should it be ?16:22
mps002jesus, why does this happen EVERY time with Ubuntu, half the time it starts up all crappy white lines and whatnot, and then just BAM, no explanation, it works suddenly16:22
mps002I am truly stupified16:22
mps002you can't install it and pass a sanity test, the two are mutually exclusive /rantoff/16:23
k5ehxlinny: I guess you didn't stick silverware into lightsockets as a four year old like I did then? :-)16:23
k5ehxlinny: mine is set to xvideo16:24
wtgeemps002: What is the laptop/vid card?16:24
omar__DanaG: Can you please give me the links again? I lost them.16:24
mps002wtgee: don't worry about it, it appears to have resolved it self miraculously, thanks for the help though :P16:24

mps002ok, I have Ibex started up, but now I can't type anything or move the mouse17:01
DanaGYou may be able to sudo dpkg --force-depends -i <deb file>, and then boot the new kernel, and then fix dependencies later.17:02
DanaGOh yeah, and feed it both files at once.17:02
DanaGI mean, it'll be -i <file1> <file2>17:02
neo14515sorry I meen dvi17:02

mps002well, fabulous, it just autodetected me back into the stoneage :P17:15
orbishi'm right there with you, only for my monitor17:15
mps002I've been bashing my keyuboard trying to get something to come out17:15
orbishit wont recognize my resolutions through a kvm switch, so i have to hook my monitor direct to the computer17:15
mps002haha, put our installs together, might have a whole working computer17:16
orbishi have a $200 paperweight at the moment17:16
orbishprogress is a bitch.17:16
orbishthat should be the slogan for any beta17:16
mps002indeed17:17

andresmhso how do I go about trying to fix audio input?18:08
leftyfbdid you run all the updates?18:08
andresmhyes18:08
leftyfbit could be a known bug with one of the latest kernel updates18:09
andresmhthe interesting thing is that about a month ago I tried a livecd of Intrepid and it had worked out of the box18:09
leftyfband it was probably running an older kernel18:09
leftyfbor something else that changed in one of the latest updates18:09
andresmhso it could be either the kernel or the alsa drivers right?18:10
bardyrandresmh, go into gnome-mixer and play around18:12
andresmhi did play around but couldn't figure it out bardyr18:12
andresmhis the sound recorded the best way to test?18:12

morpholologyah yes *reads*19:07
bsnidergorgapor, intel does use mesa for 3d acceleration19:07

gorgapori do have "direct rendering: yes"19:07
bsnidergorgapor, it is. there is no hardware acceleration on linux without the nvidia driver19:07

tvakahI've got a segfault in network-manager-openvpn, I see that upstream seems to have fixed it towards the end of september, what should I do, wait, or file a bug?23:35
tvakahOct 12 18:00:57 raidho kernel: [ 5010.697357] nm-openvpn-serv[17049]: segfault at 0 ip 08049dfd sp bf873040 error 4 in nm-openvpn-service[8048000+5000]23:36
