sliverchairanyone please answer this,                                                           Create a shell script dirtest, that will store the file listing of your root directory to dir.out; then filter and display only on the the directory that starts with either the letter 'e', 'm', 's' and store to dir1.out.02:46
sliverchaircd /; ls | grep [e,m,s] > dir1.out; cat dir1.out02:46

Odd-rationalenew2linux: cool! did it finally continue?03:36

Odd-rationalenew2linux: i was going to suggest just to use the alternative cd... but then you left...03:37
Odd-rationalebut anyways, gald it works...03:37
Odd-rationaleglad03:37
new2linuxI actually had tried the alternative and regular CD's and they were all bad burns so I then tried other ways (trying to fit it on a 256mb flash drive and a floppy) Then I decided to re-try the other "bad burns" andone worked.l03:40
new2linuxSo in the menu there were two options Install Xubuntu and Try Xubuntu the Install Xubuntu failded twice so I tried installing through the try Xubuntu and it worked.03:41
new2linuxThanks for the help03:41

S_AHi! is it possible to have xubuntu in less thn 500MB disc space ?07:47
TheSheepI guess it won't be xubuntu anymore07:47
TheSheepSince you would have to make extensive changes anyways, you could use as a base a distro that's more suited for tinkering07:48
S_ATheSheep: I am talking about core + xfe.07:48
TheSheepnot sure how much space that uses07:49
S_ATheSheep: I do not need gcc or office apps07:49

knomeS_A, you can use the minimal cd and then install what you need.08:21

WKIDHi all. I work at a small radio station and we're testing Xubuntu and Flumotion to stream our broadcasts online. The volume was a little to loud so I was looking for some software to turn it down. I've installed tkmixer. My problem is when I first opened tkmixer the volume went from to loud to nothing. None of the sliders or options on tkmixer are helping. I also quit Flumotion and restarted, but15:47
WKIDthat didn't work either. Any ideas?15:47

WKIDcharlie-tca: Yes. But it had no effect on turning down the volume in Flumotion. That's when I installed tkmixer.15:53
charlie-tcaSorry to hear that. I don't know anything about Flumotion15:53
WKIDcharlie-tca: Yeah I'm kind of fumbling my way through it. I tried uninstalling tkmixer and then running the Flumotion wizard again. But when It's back up and running I still have no volume. I know Flumotion is using OSS. Do you know of a good volume manager for OSS? I tried the applet in the upper right, but it seems to only be for ALSA15:55
charlie-tcaVolume manager works for OSS, but you may have to make sure nothing got muted in the mixer.15:56

knome*though18:31
Markopotamusooh. I do like Xubuntu and run it on my Laptop, but unfortunately this Eeepc isn't mine, so I'd like to leave it looking roughly the same as I found it.18:32
knomeyou *found* it? :P18:32
Markopotamusknome: hehe no, it's actually my mums18:32

MarkopotamusHey, what does OEM stand for?18:36
TheSheep  Original Equipment Manufacturer18:36
MarkopotamusCheers, thesheep18:36
TheSheepmeans it's software that should be preinstalled on some hardware, and so can be only boght by hardware manufacturers18:36
MarkopotamusI do see.18:37
MarkopotamusHmm. it'd also be useful to know a few keyboard commands, for instance how to bring up the run command. Doesnt seem to be alt-f2 :s18:38
knomeMarkopotamus, no, i have got no tips for restoring18:41
TheSheepalt+ctrl+f118:41
knomeMarkopotamus, apart from the restore disc, but that's complete boom18:41
Markopotamusknome: Im told by someone in #eeepc that f9 on startup resets factory settings. TheSheep: groovy, lemme try that...18:44
TheSheepMarkopotamus: that should switch to text xonsole18:44
TheSheepconsole18:44
TheSheepMarkopotamus: press alt+ctrl+f7 to go back18:44
MarkopotamusTheSheep. Hmm. Not working right now.18:45
jalshi, i had a usb keyboard which was working fine, then suddenly after a reboot it's stopped18:47
jalsit's possible it's the keyboard itself, but i tried it on a windows machine and it worked so i'm wondering if there are driver issues18:47
knomejals, shouldn't really be with a kb. did you put it in the same usb port?18:49
jalsi didn't change it between when it stopped working18:49
jalsi've tried other ports since18:49
knomeuh.. interesting18:49
knome!keyboard18:49
ubottuTo switch your keyboard layout on GNOME: System -> Preferences -> Keyboard (GNOME) - KDE: K -> System Settings -> Regional & Language -> Keyboard Layout (KDE) - Xfce: see https://help.ubuntu.com/6.10/xubuntu/desktopguide/C/switch-keyboard-layout.html - See also !Shortcuts18:49

knomejals, have you searched ubuntuforums.org ?18:50
jalsno18:50
jalsi'll give that a go i guess18:50
jalsjust was checking here in case there's some obvious thing to check18:50
knomewell, replugging, trying all usb ports, but you had done it already18:51
jalsyeah18:51
jalsit's very odd18:51

MarkopotamusCheers for the help, Knome19:05
viddjals, do you have a usb mouse to test the usb ports?19:07
viddthose buggers have a tendency to fry19:07
vidd(or is it just me?)19:07
viddyou can tell if the usb port is fried with the usb mouse.....19:09
viddthe mouse will light up but the pointer wont move19:09
jalsyeah the usb mouse works fine19:10
viddthen to test the keyboard...simply use the same port that the mouse is in, and restart x19:11
jalsyeah i did this19:11
viddwhat does lsusb tell ya?19:12
jalsactually having said that about the keyboard working in a different machine19:12
jalsit's not19:12
jalsbit random19:12
viddcheck the cord for a break19:13
TheSheepjals: anyhing in dmesg?19:13
jalswhat happened last time is i plugged it into the windows machine i'm on now, then a few minutes later it suddenly got detected19:13
TheSheepjals: does lsusb show it?19:13
jalsTheSheep: dunno how to run that stuff without a keyboard heh19:14
TheSheepjals: there is on-screen keyboard19:14
jalshmm19:14
viddTheSheep, how do you turn on the on-sceen keyboard in xubuntu?19:15
TheSheephmm... I think that in xubuntu you have to actually install it first...19:16
jalsi'm starting to think it's the keyboard :(19:16
viddic19:16
jalsdidn't even work with ps/219:16
viddjals, is there a break in the cord?19:16
jalsit was a cheap ass one19:16
jalsi don't see one19:16
viddi find it easier to find breaks by running the cord thru my fingers rather then visual inspection19:17
jalsyeah19:17
viddif you feel it "catch" there is a break19:17
Markopotamusjoy \O/ It is all working fine now.19:25
