DaskreecHok I think there are two problems :)00:04
DaskreecHUnichrome won't install and Compiz compisiting is freezing stuff00:05
DelvienI <3 pulse audio00:05
crimsunedgy: I think the better course of action is to file a wishlist-priority bug affecting the 'linux' source package.  Please state that you wish to rename one of the mixer element strings to 'Headphone'.00:06
crimsunugh, the non-Free nvidia driver really makes this laptop explode upon resume from suspend-to-RAM00:09
noelferreiracan i use desktop effects without nvidia proprietary drivers?00:15
DaskreecHThe package issue seems to be Ibex related00:16
edgycrimsun: should I file the bug against the kernel?00:16
excochanging resolution back and forth (q3a) changes the order of the things in my taskbar ... can I prevent that?00:17
noelferreiracan i use desktop effects without nvidia proprietary drivers?00:20
crdlbthe 'nv' driver will not work00:21
g-hennuxi can't rotate my screen with the nv driver00:21
g-hennuxxrandr says it cannot use rotation left and reflection none, but this is printed out for any combination of the two00:21
crimsunedgy: the name of that source package is 'linux', which is the kernel, yes.00:28
mike-solidushow do i use a better alt tab switcher in kde4, i see there are a ton, but none of them say what key combinations invoke them00:29
mike-solidusso i'm stuck with an alt tab that barely even highlights the mindow i'm tabbing to00:29
edgycrimsun: but the problem is in kde not in alsa00:29
mike-solidusand do the neon nightly amarok 2 builds work in 8.10?00:30
beautifulsnowAnyone having issues with ibex taking fooorreeevveerrr to shutdown (last message before slowdown being about shutting down alsa)00:30
beautifulsnowOh Im sorry, there's already a topic on the forums about this :3 *me apologizes*00:31
peter771strangely ubuntu crashed on boot because my usb mp3 player was plugged in, my theory is for some reason ubuntu attempts to detect usb devices, can this be disabled?00:34
peter771on boot that is lol00:34
blkno1game over thanks to the local kid00:35
crimsunedgy: if the mixer element names are confusing, that's a linux issue.00:41
Cycomat the moment, which is better supported (less buggy), the open source Radeon driver or the closed-source NVidia driver?00:41
beautifulsnownvidia00:42
Cycomis that your final answer? :)00:42
crimsunedgy: if there's a kmix portion involved too, you should open a kdemultimedia task, too00:42
Cycombeautifulsnow: in what way?00:42
beautifulsnowThats just what I hear. *me shrugs*00:42
Cycombeautifulsnow: basically, is it worth my dismantling me laptop and swapping my Mobility Radeon X1400 for the NVidia GoForce Go 7300 I have kicking around.00:42
beautifulsnowIf you're good at replacing parts on your lappy, I say go for it. (are you currently having issues with your ati card?) I got the same nvidia card you do on this laptop and it works just fine, compiz enabled to the max, and runs games (Guild Wars, Second Life) in max settings in Ubuntu.00:44
edgycrimsun: thanks for the helpful hints00:44
dudusare there plans to include ooo3?00:44
Cycombeautifulsnow: external monitor configuration issues.00:45
beautifulsnowAh, yeah . I got zero experience there, so I can't say much about that00:45
Cycombeautifulsnow: basically, if I plug in an external, will it work? will I be able to set it up without gnome going all freaky on me?00:45
Cycomugh00:45
Cycombummer.00:45
beautifulsnowTry it? :)00:45
tictac232434Does anyone know how to fix the Vlc error where it try's to play every file when u open a folder?00:46
Cycombeautifulsnow: I don't want to spend an hour taking apart and reassembling my laptop :)00:46
* beautifulsnow sobs. I got a CRT laying around, but i dont have the cable thingy for my card, or I'd try it for you :P00:46
beautifulsnowtictac232434,  yeah I saw a fix for it on either launchpad or ubuntuforums, but that was earlier, and I don't remember the url or what it said >.< (I was just browsing around, bored) google search.00:47
peter771strangely ubuntu crashed on boot because my usb mp3 player was plugged in, my theory is for some reason ubuntu attempts to detect usb devices on boot which causes it to crash, can this be disabled?00:49
wgrantpeter771: "crashed" isn't very descriptive.00:49
peter771froze00:49
wgrantAnd why wouldn't we detect USB devices on boot? Would you prefer to have no input devices?00:49
peter771halted with the words "starting up" fans started to run at full revs00:50
wgrantpeter771: Remove quiet and splash from the kernel command line.00:50
peter771wgrant, done, will test now00:53
Geforce88ubuntu 8.10 tried to install the 71.x.x drivers, and on reboot it failed. how do i force it to use legacy drivers?00:53
crdlbGeforce88: the legacy drivers do not work00:54
crdlbwhat video card do you have?00:54
crdlbif it's older than the FX series, your only option is the nv driver00:54
Geforce88nvidia riva tnt2 model 64 pro00:54
Geforce88it is older00:54
wgrantYou'll need to use nv.00:55
crdlbquite a bit :)00:55
wgrantI doubt that jockey would have tried to install 71.00:55
Geforce88i had a power supply go out and it fried my video card, and this is all i have to replace it with00:55
tictac232434beautifulsnow: looking for it... hard can not find it and is bother me...00:55
tictac232434beautifulsnow: Bothering me*00:55
Geforce88so i can select the nv dirver and it work ?00:55
crdlbyes00:55
Cycomoooh! crdlb, just the IRC person I was looking for :)00:56
* crdlb would hope that the -71 and -96 drivers would be blocked against xserver like fglrx is00:56
crdlb:o00:56
Geforce88ok, stupid question, where is the screens and graphics option ?00:56
Geforce88i'm using 8.10 and i can't find it in administration00:57
wgrantGeforce88: It no longer exists.00:57
Cycomcrdlb: I have an NVidia GeForce Go 7300 and an ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 for my laptop.  Which should I throw in it for the best support (watch movies with xv, connect external screens, etc. etc.)00:57
wgrantGeforce88: Remove the nvidia driver and get your xorg.conf out of the way.00:57
Geforce88so just simply delete the xorg.conf00:57
Geforce88?00:57
CycomGeforce88: uh, no.00:57
Geforce88can i do sudo dpkg-reconfigure ?00:57
wgrantGeforce88: If you've nothing special in there, move it away. Best to keep a copy just in case.00:57
wgrantGeforce88: That works too.00:58
crdlbCycom: due to the fglrx situation in intrepid, the geforce will certainly be faster00:58
Geforce88k00:58
wgrantProbably easier.00:58
crdlbCycom: but the radeon is an r500, which is now supported by the open source radeon driver00:58
Cycomcrdlb: I'm not looking for GAMING performance really.  I already know the opensource ATI driver will let me do everything EXCEPT use my external monitor.00:58
Cycomfor some reason it poos itself if I try to set up an external display.00:59
peter771wgrant, the boot process halted at the line ACPI : Checking initramfs for custom DSDT00:59
crdlbwell, the radeon driver has XRandR 1.2 support, so it should work, but I guess there's a bug :)00:59
Cycomya. you might say that.00:59
Cycomwill the NVidia allow me to control my external displays without goofy crashing issues?00:59
Geforce88what is the command to remove a driver?00:59
Cycomare there still random black window bugs or something?00:59
Geforce88cause i did reconfigure and rebooted gmd and now i have a black screen01:00
crdlbCycom: the black window bug has been replaced with a memory leak :>01:00
crdlbbut you'll only get it if you have very low videoram01:00
Cycomcrdlb: how low?01:00
bertodserahow can I add a log to the log viewer? If I opnen the mysql.log from the System Log it says it's not a log file01:00
Cycomcrdlb: you're not doing much to inspire confidence here :)01:01
crdlb128MB is probably plenty01:01
Cycom64MB?01:01
bertodserasamba works, though01:01
crdlbmight be a bit low :/01:01
crdlb32MB is definitely too low01:01
Cycomcrdlb: ah hell.  See, my card steals from regular memory and only has 64 onboard.01:01
crdlbturbocache :<01:01
Cycomcrdlb: it CLAIMS to be a 256MB card, but...01:01
crdlbI don't think the nvidia driver does a very good job of using the turbocache memory in this situation01:02
crdlbbut they may have improved01:02
Cycomcrdlb: what will the memory leak do?01:02
crdlbcompiz will appear to leak gobs of memory if the nvidia driver gets low on vram (it's really the nvidia libgl that leaks)01:03
Cycomwill it crash?01:04
Cycomor just hog my ram?01:04
CycomI've got 2gb of regular memory...01:04
crdlbthe latter01:04
Cycomscrew it. I'll stick with the ATI :)01:05
CycomFOSS DRIVER WINS!01:05
Cycombrb. reboot.01:05
Geforce88please what is the command to remove the nvidia drivers ?01:06
beautifulsnowidont know the command but you can go on Add/Remove , search for nvidia, the drivers will come up. uncheck the box and click ok :P01:07
beautifulsnowi must reboot, see ya later :D01:08
tictac232434Does anyone know how to fix the Vlc error with Intrepid where it opens auto and starts trying to play all files in a folder when u double click a folder?01:08
crdlbGeforce88: try: sudo apt-get remove nvidia-\*01:08
crdlbtictac232434: right click on a folder > properties > open with > "Open Folder"01:08
crdlbthe bug is that using "Open with other application" in the context menu sets the app as the default01:09
tictac232434crdlb: does not work still opens01:09
tictac232434crdlb: ty appreciate it01:10
peter771ubuntu froze at boot when I left my usb mp3 player plugged in (tested and only freezes with mp3 player plugged in), the last line displayed on the screen of the boot process was "ACPI: Checking initramfs for custom DSDT"01:10
tictac232434crdlb: I had to create a new folder01:10
mike-solidushow do i get more themes for plasma and how do i get more dashboard apps01:11
Geforce88ty crdlb01:12
Cycomwhat's the 'correct' way to set up an external display with the FOSS radeon driver?01:13
crdlbsystem > prefs > screen resolution01:14
pookmuWhen I use Totem or VLC it breaks sound in FF. Someone told me here I need a Lib file I forgot which it was.01:14
pookmuA reboot fixes sound in one or the other01:15
mike-solidusamarok 2 in the repos for 8.10 yet?01:15
mike-solidusor a package for k4b01:16
beautifulsnowThe ubuntuforums are down for maintnance, it's driving me crazy... :P Anyone know how to fix the bad static in sound?01:18
beautifulsnowHaha I feel like such a dummy. *goes to Google Cache* :P01:20
Cycomcrdlb: yeah, when I connect the external and set it for above my current screen, it flips out, and looks like it's out of sync01:21
Cycomjust goes ballistic01:21
Cycomon both displays.  Even my terminal is like that.01:21
g-hennuxhey folks, is it correct one of you said above that i'm not able to use the proprietary nvidia drivers in ibex with cards older than any.. "FX"?01:24
bsniderg-hennux, what card do you have?01:24
g-hennux"xfx geforce9800 gt"01:24
DaskreecH!unichrome01:24
ubottuSorry, I don't know anything about unichrome01:24
DaskreecH!via01:24
ubottuSorry, I don't know anything about via01:24
DaskreecHDumb bot01:24
crdlbg-hennux: that's a tiny bit newer than the FX series :)01:25
Geforce88i hate chrome9 chipset01:25
bsniderg-hennux, you won't have a problem01:25
Geforce88yea, the 177.80 driver should work fine01:25
g-hennuxcrdlb: ok. well then... i just installed the newest nvidia drivers from their website, and kdm won't start, in the log a useless (EE) line.01:25
g-hennuxwait a sec01:25
Cycomcrdlb: hey, when did that memory leak bug in nvidia show up? since alpha 4?01:26
crdlbg-hennux: you should not have installed it from the website01:26
crdlbCycom: since 100.14.1901:26
Cycom??01:26
bsniderg-hennux, use my howto thread whent he forums are back up http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=5952369#post595236901:26
g-hennuxcrdlb, bsnider: ok, thanks01:27
Cycomcrdlb: when did that come out?  I'm using alpha 4 as a reference because it's the last time I ran nvidia in this thing01:27
crdlbg-hennux: the correct way is to use system > admin > hardware drivers01:27
Cycomcrdlb: and if it already existed then, well, hell, it didn't cause a problem then01:27
crdlbCycom: a long time ago01:27
Cycomcrdlb: SWEET! then I'm golden.01:27
CycomNvidia drivers had external monitor problems before, but supposedly they've been fixed01:27
Cycomand the leak didn't happen then01:28
Cycomso I think I'm safe!01:28
crdlbsince gutsy in fact01:28
g-hennuxcrdlb: is there an equivalent to that in kde? don't find it01:29
crdlbyes01:29
crdlbthe command should be jockey-kde01:29
crdlband it should be in the menu somewhere01:29
crdlbyou should probably uninstall the the nvidia.com driver before proceeding for a higher chance of success01:30
g-hennuxcrdlb: hm, that program tells me "on this system, no proprietary drivers are used" and shows me two empty lists and a close button...01:32
crdlbhmm, it may have been confused by the nvidia installer :/01:33
* wgrant notes that we don't have a packaging system so users go around installing critical system components from some random website.01:33
crdlbyou should also verify that you have the linux-generic package installed01:33
crdlbbut beyond that, I don't know anything about the new dkms stuff01:34
=== burner1 is now known as burner
DaskreecH!flash01:36
ubottuTo install Flash see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats/Flash (a recent version for !Dapper is available in !backports) - See also !Restricted and !Gnash01:36
bsniderg-hennux, please install the nvidia-glx-177 package01:39
bsniderg-hennux, then run a command called: dkms status and tell me what it says01:39
g-hennuxbsnider: ok01:40
g-hennuxnvidia, 177.80, 2.6.27-7-generic,i686: installed (original_module exists)01:42
bsnidergood. now replace your xorg.conf with mine01:43
bsniderrun: gksu gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf01:43
bsnidermy xorg.conf is at http://paste.ubuntu.com/57216/01:43
bsniderthen restart your computer and you'll have the nvidia driver01:44
g-hennuxbsnider: ok, that worked :-)01:47
bsniderof course it worked01:47
g-hennuxbut know: the second screen stays dark01:48
bsniderthe disappointing thing is that jockey isn't always working01:48
g-hennuxi didn't take *exactly* your config, but had the parts from my old config, where i had one screen LeftOf another, stay in there01:48
crdlbbsnider: in cases where people haven't circumvented the ubuntu system with the nvidia.com driver?01:49
bsnidercrdlb, people don't always do what they should01:50
ozatomicJsut wondering if anyone is having trouble with gnome jsut showing a background after logging in01:54
crdlbbsnider: then the people need to be fixed :)01:55
bsnidercrdlb, spoken like a true bolshevik01:56
ozatomicKDE 4.1 loads fine its jsut gnome01:56
bsniderozatomic, in my expert opinion, you may have a gnome problem01:57
ozatomicgnome worked fine before the update so could it be something wiht the update01:58
ozatomichmm02:00
ozatomici will jsut have to use KDE while i wait for updates02:00
bsniderozatomic, make a test user and log in to that gnome desktop to see if a plain one works02:01
Cycomcrdlb: Nvidia card in :)02:01
beautifulsnowhey, isnt global menu applet included in intrepid?02:02
Cycoma little over 30 minutes, that wasn't bad :)02:02
NodeRazorHi02:02

HockeyInJuneIf I install this now, will I be able to get the updates between now and the 30th via apt-get?02:06
bsniderNodeRazor, a package that ends with fta1 didn't come from ubuntu's official repos. you may have a ppa account or something that's creating the conflict. check your sources.list file02:06
NodeRazorIt's strange I have this package > libasound2-dev 1.0.17aubuntu4, but it wont let me to install it.02:06
NodeRazorjust a sec.02:07
NodeRazorbsnider, see > http://paste2.org/p/8637302:08

NodeRazorwell I dont have force version option02:14
NodeRazornever mind =)02:15
NodeRazorre-installing now.02:15
g-hennuxhm, super-sad; it seems as if it is not possible to have only one screen rotated in a twinview setup. butok, now this is super-ubuntu-unrelated :-)02:15
g-hennuxthanks for all your help!02:15
NodeRazorwow that cool feature thanks bsnider02:15
NodeRazoraaaa02:16
NodeRazornow I lost my flash can't even watch youtube =(02:16
NodeRazorwhat that package for flash again?02:17

NodeRazorwill try to compile the package now.02:21
NodeRazorI have another error > make: *** [install-recursive] Error 102:22
bsniderthere's probably a deb package somewhere for this program that you're trying to install02:22
NodeRazorwell I found an older one yes, for i386 I forced the install into x64.02:23
bsniderdid you try getdeb/net?02:23
NodeRazorBut this latest version is much better02:23
NodeRazorwill due now02:23
bsniderwhat's the name of it?02:23
NodeRazorsopcast02:23
NodeRazornothing02:23
bsniderit sounds like miro to me02:24
NodeRazorI am using this > http://linuxtoy.org/archives/gtk_sopcast.html02:24
NodeRazornow02:24
NodeRazorno02:24
NodeRazorIts a streaming program02:24
NodeRazorMiro does not stream, it only downloads it.02:24
bsnideryeah, big difference there02:24
NodeRazorexactly02:25
NodeRazorI need to stream it.02:25
smil3yNodeRazor>  what are you trying to stream02:25
NodeRazorThis is the one I am trying to compile now > http://code.google.com/p/gsopcast/02:25
NodeRazorRussian tv channel > http://live.palmtv.ru/cgi-bin/index.cgi?Ch=502:26
bsniderthere are two rpms here. you can use a program called alien to install those on ubuntu02:26
smil3yvlc or mplayer doesnt work?02:26
NodeRazorbottom line is I want to use gsopcast =)02:26
NodeRazorwell I use vlc and mplayer, but this program specificly for streaming online tv channels.02:26
smil3yNodeRazor>  ahh, i see, i bet if i fed that to mythstream itd play lol02:27
NodeRazor;-)02:27
ali1234NodeRazor: that url "just works" for me02:27
smil3yNodeRazor>  you got a mythbox?02:28
ali1234it's playing a testcard02:28
bsniderNodeRazor, try using alien to install those two rpms02:28
NodeRazorwhat this > fork.cc02:28
ali1234ah it's flash02:28
NodeRazorI get error from it02:28
smil3yali1234>  think its off the air, just checked too02:29
ali1234about sopcast: it's not a video player, it just fetches the stream. it uses some kind of p2p system. you can use it with vlc because it opens a http server on localhost that passes the stream to whatever player you want02:30
NodeRazoryes02:30
NodeRazoraaa screw it lol02:30
NodeRazor;-)02:30
NodeRazorI'll use the VLC instead.02:30
NodeRazorat least I've reinstalled proper alsa lol02:31
ali1234what i meant was you cant use vlc without also running sopcast at the same time02:31
smil3yNodeRazor>  you have russian roots or friends wanting to watch02:31
ali1234cos vlc doesnt support that protocol02:31
NodeRazorAfter updates two days ago, my VLC player video opens in seperate screen then controls. Does any one have the same problem with VLC....02:32
ali1234unless they added it recently02:32
NodeRazorI've tried to fix it in preferences but it wont help, its something to due with x11 video output.02:32
smil3yNodeRazor>  should be a setting under preferences or something like that to detach player or player window02:32
NodeRazoryes02:33
NodeRazortried that02:33
NodeRazornot working properly02:33
smil3yNodeRazor>  ah02:33
danbh_intrepidNodeRazor: yeah, I have the same problem02:33
NodeRazorit used to work just fine two days ago.02:33
bsniderNodeRazor, http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=72868302:33
NodeRazorthanks bsnider will try02:33
bsniderno. try not. do, or do not. there is no try.02:34
NodeRazor"Integrate video in interface" > The option should of worked just fine with "Complete look with information area" video output integrated with gui.02:35
NodeRazorbut its not =)02:36
bsniderin vlc?02:36
NodeRazorafter I've updated the x11, this happened.02:36
NodeRazorYES02:36
NodeRazorbtw, I am using VLC 0.9.402:36
NodeRazorIt's not a big deal, but kind of annoying.02:37
bsnideri'm sure it will be fixed. there's no need to stat a riot02:37
NodeRazorhehe yeah02:38
NodeRazoryou think re-install of vlc would fix this ?02:38
bsnidernoo02:38
MTecknologyhey - I'm having an issue with seamingly most apps. I give it input, but there's pretty much no reaction until I move the windows. like xterm of vbox. It looks like it froze, I move the window, it shows everything...02:39
MTecknologyis it known or not?02:39
|rt|when doing a search using aptitude what does "A" indicate?02:39
danbh_intrepidMTecknology: would you describe it as a refresh bug?02:40
smil3yNodeRazor>  you know i wonder if the detached player is the default now, i just tried it using the same version and its detached for me as well02:40
MTecknologydanbh_intrepid: maybe... idk - it's in more than one app so maybe refresh with openbox?02:40
NodeRazorI don't think so.02:41
danbh_intrepidsmil3y: no, its a bug.  because if you try to change the setting, it doesn't stick02:41
NodeRazorCuz, It was just fine 2 days ago.02:41
NodeRazorIts something to due with X11 output.02:41
MTecknologyNodeRazor: on +1 a system can be perfect one day and unbootable the next ;)02:41
bsniderthe vlc nightly packages from videolan.org don't have this problem, so it's obviously a problem with ubuntu's package02:41
NodeRazoroh plus "Show a controller in fullscreen" does not work now too.02:41
MTecknologyNodeRazor: any ideas if it's new or not?02:42
NodeRazorlol NO02:42
MTecknologyno idea or just a no?02:42
NodeRazorI am 95% confident in any alpha / beta release this days =)02:42

MTecknologyoh - sorry, wrong person02:42
NodeRazorwhat?02:42
smil3yMTecknology>  yeah tell me about it, i had to delete all of gnome yesterday due to dependency issues after upgrade, re installed ubuntu-desktop and all is fine FOR NOW02:42
MTecknologydanbh_intrepid: any ideas if it's new or not?02:42
NodeRazorany ideas if its new or not ? what the hell is this ?02:43
NodeRazorwhat are you referring to?02:43
NodeRazorubuntu or vlc?02:43
danbh_intrepidMTecknology: I thought I saw a bug having to do with compiz, and refresh rates02:43
danbh_intrepidMTecknology: you have compiz?02:43
MTecknologydanbh_intrepid: not using compiz02:43
MTecknologyopenbox only02:43
NodeRazorYeah, I am using compiz too so?02:44
MTecknologywas considering running some compiz on it02:44
MTecknologyI'll probably do a clean install after 8.10 release anyway since there's so many bug fixes for my hardware in the making02:44
MTecknologymaybe 9.04 will be my release :)02:45
NodeRazorsame here02:45

NodeRazorcool thanks02:46
NodeRazorI am glad I am not the only one lol02:46

NodeRazordanbh_intrepid, this is exactly what I have =)02:47

NodeRazorbut I don't see any way to fix this easily =)02:48
NodeRazorwill need to wait for the patch.02:48

Cycomugh. anyone have any idea why when I set up twinview my panels go to my SECONDARY display instead of my primary?02:56
jack|ArgonI have *part* of intrepid ibex installed on my box, and I was wondering if maybe I could get some help02:58
jack|ArgonI know it's generally frowned upon, but I've pulled a few packages from intrepid to use in hardy, and they seem to be breaking things02:59
NodeRazorCycom, you can configure it so it would be the first one02:59
NodeRazorCycom, you use nvidia?02:59
jack|Argonthe point in question: xorg 7.4 no longer allows vt switching for some reason? Is this intentional, or a common bug, or... ?02:59
jack|Argonany help is appreciated ;)02:59
MTecknologyI need opinions...02:59
wgrantjack|Argon: You are entirely on your own if you decide to backport things so strangely.03:00
jack|Argonwgrant: I figured so03:00
jack|Argonwgrant: hoping maybe that this was something not caused by that...03:00
wgrantMine will sometimes magically switch back the first time I do it after a suspend..03:00
cwraighi all i am having trouble installing zomeminder its asking for a package called libfile-temp-perl that has been removed03:00
wgrantBut it will behave after that.03:01
CycomNodeRazor: yeah03:01
CycomNodeRazor: it IS configured to be the primary03:01
CycomNodeRazor: my panels still show up on the other one03:01
jack|Argonwgrant: (almost) surprisingly, the things I pulled work very well in hardy (udev, hal, dbus, upstart, xserver-xorg)03:01
NodeRazorCycom, try using nvidia-glx-config03:01
NodeRazorCycom, check all the options.03:01
NodeRazorCycom, I remember that you need to restart...03:02
CycomNodeRazor: you mean nvidia-settings or nvidia-xconfig?03:02
NodeRazornvidia-settings03:02
jack|Argonwgrant: hmm. I simply can't vt switch anymore. And xorg ignores my xorg.conf (and my custom trackpoint settings :( ), but I get the feeling X is moving away from that...03:02
NodeRazorCycom, try > gksudo nvidia-settings03:02
NodeRazorotherwise you won't be able to save settings03:03
wgrantjack|Argon: It won't ignore xorg.conf, but we remove InputDevice sections on upgrade now.03:03
wgrantjack|Argon: We don't expose additional touchpad options through the GUI yet, but I'll be coding a full GUI up for Jaunty.03:03
NodeRazorCycom, I don't have the second screen now. But when I used it I am sure that this is possible ;)03:04
jack|Argonwgrant: actually, trackpoint... my "custom config" was to make the third button turn the whole mouse int a scroll wheel.03:04
NodeRazor.. to configure03:04
NodeRazorCycom, if not restart at least logoff03:04

CycomHAHAHAHAHAHA! OH MY GOD!03:36
CycomI've been having all this trouble getting my upper display to work03:37
CycomI think I may have found a bug in nvidia-settings03:37
CycomIf I set my top screen to +200+0 and my bottom screen to +0+1024, gnome freaks out and panels don't work.03:37
CycomHowever, if I set the bottom screen to +0+1025, EVERYTHING WORKS!03:37
RAOFA bug in nvidia-settings?  Who'd've thought! :/03:42
CycomRAOF: hey, it beats the one in the radeon drivers with the other video card.03:42

RAOFHeh.  This is a perfect opportunity to use...03:49
RAOF!doesntwork03:49
ubottuDoesn't work is a strong statement. Does it sit on the couch all day? Does it want more money? Is it on IRC all the time? Please be specific! Examples of what doesn't work tend to help too.03:49
gustavoldwhen I use skype I cant hear anything, when I open a movie whith xine it starts with volume 0. Even if I change the volume in xine and close it, when I open it again the volume is 0 back03:51
gustavolds/whith/with/03:52
TheMusogustavold: In the skype sound preferences, what sound devices do you ahve available?03:52
TheMusoand what xine frontend are you using?03:52
gustavoldin skype:03:54
gustavoldNVidia CK80403:54
gustavoldI'm using xine-ui03:54
TheMusook are you using ubuntu, kubuntu, or xubuntu?03:54
gustavoldubuntu03:54
TheMusoOk. Do you have pulseaudio running? To check, open up a terminal and run "ps aux | grep pulseaudio"03:55
gustavoldps waux | grep -i pulseaudio03:55
gustavoldgustavo   6500  1.7  0.2  28980  5644 ?        Ssl  06:27  17:55 /usr/bin/pulseaudio -D --log-target=syslog03:56

bsniderTheMuso, you're luke yelavich right?03:56
TheMusobsnider: Yes.03:56
TheMusogustavold: Ok in the skype sound devices lists, there isn't a pulse option?03:56
gustavoldyes03:56
TheMusoOk choose that for both output and input, and see if skype works.03:57
gustavoldTheMuso: I think it worked03:57
TheMusogustavold: Ok try the test call to make sure both your mic and the speakers work.03:57
TheMusobsnider: What can I do for you?03:57
bsniderTheMuso, any chance of pulse 9.13 making into your ppa?03:57
TheMusobsnider: Its there as of an hour or so ago.03:58
bsniderTheMuso, oh, thanks. i thought you'd say you didn't have time.03:58
RAOFI'll need to check skype + pulse again.  Last weekend skype would output through pulse but I didn't get any input.03:59
TheMusobsnider: At the time I thought so, but I've made time as I want to get some good testing for it.03:59
bsniderTheMuso, what about alsa 1.0.18?03:59
TheMusoRAOF: gah!03:59
gustavoldTheMuso: now mic is not working03:59
bsnidergustavold, mic has to be a plughw device03:59
TheMusogustavold: right.03:59
TheMusobsnider: but if pulseaudio is running, surely pulse would block using that.04:00
* ajmitch wonders if TheMuso has any hair left after dealing with these sound issues04:00
TheMusobsnider: as for 1.0.18 or alsa, its too alte for intrepid, and to ensure 100% compatibility, you need alsa 1.0.18 or everything.04:00
RAOFTheMuso: I didn't spend much time debugging.  It's possible that there was a simple fix that I just didn't check.04:00
TheMusoajmitch: Hair, yes. Patience with the whole stack, plus race conditions with GNOME startup, event sounds, and pulseaudio loading, not a chance.04:01
TheMusoRAOF: Right.04:01
bsniderTheMuso, pulse for all 3 in skype doesn't work. for sound in i use hw:intel,204:01
TheMusobsnider: And that works alongside pulse?04:02
bsnidersure does04:02
bsnideras of your most recent updates to the 9.10 version anyway04:02
TheMusogustavold: Ok, for sound in, you need to select your actual sound card. Whic one to select, I am not sure, as there are probably two of them with slight differences in their description.04:02
TheMusobsnider: Right, thats better than nothing.04:03
TheMusoAt least sound output for several apps at once works.04:03
eternal_pis it possible to do a bluetooth PAN connection to a WM device for internet, or just USB?04:03
gustavoldTheMuso: ok, now it is working both mic and speaker. Thank you :)04:03
gustavoldTheMuso: is there a mailing list where you discuss this stuff? I am programmer and I'm planning to start contributing to some open source project.04:06
TheMusogustavold: Not specifically what I was telling you about then, at least not that I know of.04:07
bsnidergustavold, pulseaudio's "perfectsetup" page has advice for how to get skype working. that's what i used04:08
TheMusogustavold: As for xine, could you try and check whether xine is using pulseaudio? You can do so by running xine-ui, playing audio, and running the pavucontrol applicatino which you may have to install.04:08
gustavoldTheMuso: ok. It is because you are nice. It is good to have someone like it to discuss when you are starting with open source04:09
Hobbseecwraig: seeing as I happened to see it?  A couple o fhours.04:10
* TheMuso goes and installs xine-ui to do some of his own testing.04:11
bsniderTheMuso, ever since a couple of days ago, all of my apps can use alsa as their sound driver and they still work fine, and can send to s/pdif. right now, this setup is perfect.04:12
TheMusobsnider: Great.04:12
TheMusobsnider: Thats because we have all alsa apps goign via pulseaudio whenever its running.04:12
TheMusogoing*04:12
bsnidernever worked this well in ubuntu before, even with all of the recommended hacks04:13
gustavoldTheMuso: yes, xine is using pulseaudio04:13
bsnideror "fixes"04:13
TheMusogustavold: Just to be sure, it doesn't say ALSA in the description of the audio being played in pavucontrol?04:13
gustavoldxine: Audio Stream04:14
TheMusohrm ok, and you say the volume is always at 0 when you start it?04:14
gustavoldyes04:14
TheMusoOk. Have you tried deleting the .xine related files in your home directory and trying xine again?04:14
gustavoldI'll try04:15
gustavoldTheMuso: it didn't solve04:15
TheMusovery very interesting.04:16
TheMusogustavold: interesting. I am testing with xine-ui here and it works fine for me without a problem.04:16
bsniderif it sasy xine, then it's using pulse04:16
bsniderthis could be alsa's fault04:17
TheMusobsnider: Indeed.04:17
TheMusoBut if its using pulse natively, that doesn't make sense.04:18
bsniderhe should blow away his userland alsa files04:18
gustavoldoops, I think I said something wrong. I was seeing the Playback tab in pavucontrol04:18
gustavoldin the output devices it says alsa pcm on front: 0 (...) vida dma04:18
bsniderthe playback tab is the correct tab04:19
gustavold=/04:19
bsniderTheMuso, if alsa's main volume is at zero, pulse won't make any noise though04:19
TheMusobsnider: Oh right.04:19
TheMusogustavold: when you say the volume is 0, do you mean when you restart your system, or when you play using xine for the first time?04:20
TheMusoc/04:20
gustavoldTheMuso: when I close the audio/video and open it again without restarting the system04:20
TheMusogustavold: Right, thats what I thought.04:21
TheMusogustavold: What about aplications like totem, audacious, vlc, or rhythmbox? Do they exhibit the same behavior?04:21
bsnideri'd be shocked if pulse had anything to do with this04:23
gustavoldTheMuso: no04:23
TheMusogustavold: Right.04:23
TheMusoI'm out of ideas for this one at the moment.04:23
gustavoldI tested with vlc and mplayer. They start with sound04:24
TheMusogustavold: ok.04:24
bsnidergustavold, did you try uninstalling xine-ui, removing config files too, and then reinstalling it?04:25
Cycomcrdlb: you stll around?04:25
gustavoldbsnider: I can try04:25
bsniderin fact i'd remove libxine too04:25

gustavoldproblems still occurs04:42
gustavoldTheMuso: just for information, when I configure xine to use alsa it works fine, when I configure it to use pulseaudio the volume 0 problem is back04:48
shirishhi all, anybody here using aptitude?04:49
TheMusogustavold: Very interesting indeed.04:50

TheMusoHobbsee: the bug is surely filed against xine-ui? Or is it not?05:04

frybyein the nvidia settings manager it is at 75 mhz... so one assumes this is right .. hmmm05:42
frybyeok - i am probably worrying my head about nothing here apparently.. heheh05:42
RAOFPretty much, yes.05:44
frybyeok - thanks ...05:44
beautifulsnowSo nautilus is not in ubuntu-desktop now.. mmmm does it mean it's safe to uninstall it in ibex? *big grin* I'd love to get rid of it ;)06:14
reqqit!isitoutyet06:16
ubottuSorry, I don't know anything about isitoutyet06:16
reqqit='(06:16
reqqitbeautifulsnow, I hate nautilus too06:16
reqqitwhy do you hate it?06:16
beautifulsnowreqqit, it comes out oct 3006:17
reqqitAnd what are you using in place? gnome commander? thunar?06:17
reqqitbeautifulsnow, I know. I still want to ask, just to bide my time.06:17
beautifulsnowreqqit,  i like both thunar and pcmanFM06:17
reqqitI admit, I like thunar on the Acer ONE06:17
beautifulsnowbut the reason i want to get rid of nautilus is because of it managing the desktop06:18
reqqitand, I hate Nautilus, because it is so buggy you cannot even copy files.06:18
beautifulsnowthat too :P06:18
reqqitreal bug, to do with system caret, drag and dropping, and whether the folder is a 'root' node on the current tree view. Plus, it is time dependant.... insane.06:19
* beautifulsnow wonders if desktop drag and drop works if she sets compiz to draw desktop background *tries*06:19
bertodseraHi! MySQL tools require a  libgtkmm2.0-dev lib, that seems to have become unavailable in recent distros :( Any idea of how to find it?06:43
bertodserait surely existed in gutsy: http://packages.ubuntu.com/uk/gutsy/libgtkmm2.0-dev06:47
dhngI just installed intrepid and it borked my x session, how do I restore my previous settings?07:00
dhnganyone awake in here?07:20
RAOFYes, of course.07:22
dhngI upgraded to intrepid and it broke X.  I restored X to a previous config file, but when I log in, I only see my background image07:23
RAOFWhat graphics card do you have?07:29
dhngRAOF: Intel07:29
RAOFYou might have more luck simply removing your xorg.conf; You can move it out of the way (backing it up in the process) with "sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf ~/xorg.conf.backup"07:30
dhngI was able to start x with my restored config07:31
dhngbut all I get is just my background image07:31
dhngnothing else appears when I log in07:31
dhngI also get some crap about mismatched kernel07:32
RAOFHow did you upgrade?07:33
RAOFIt sounds like you've got some systemic problems.07:34
dhngI did an upgrade from Ubuntu itself07:34
dhngupdate-manager -d07:35
RAOFAs in, using update-manager?  Right.07:35
RAOFNo errors during the upgrade?07:35
dhnga ton of errors, having to do with the virtual machines and with installing the new kernel07:35
compu73rg33kI'm trying to get my scanner to work .I have a Canon MP310, and it worked perfectly with the Canon MP180 drivers in 8.04. I've upgraded to 8.10 already and xsane doesn't autodetect the scanner. I ran sane-find-scanner and I got a result: found USB scanner (vendor=0x04a9, product=0x1728) at libusb:001:006 but running scanimage -L says No scanners were identified07:36
RAOFdhng: Hm.  Someone might be interested in the log; there's obviously something seriously wrong somewhere.07:37
dhngRAOF: the install log? how do I get it?07:37
RAOFIt's probably sitting in /var/log somewhere.07:37
RAOFI'm not going to be around to troubleshoot further07:38
RAOFSomeone should be able to pick up where I left off.07:38
dhngRAOF: when I'm shown an empty screen with just my background image, is there a shortcut I can use to run an app?07:39
dhngRAOF: Ctrl+Alt+Del seems to invoke the system manager07:39

ttabasic users are asking it in Finnish forums..08:23

Le-Chuck_ITAHi, is there something new in intrepid that might be resetting the capture volume of my soundcard and muting it?08:50

EruditeHermityeah but with this many changes daily, it makes you wonder if they will be ready in time08:54
EruditeHermitprobably won't be as good as hardy in terms of polish08:56
EruditeHermitbut then again hardy was LTS08:56
Le-Chuck_ITAit's not skype. My system crashed so I repeat the question in case somebody replied in the meantime: is there some new component in intrepid that might be resetting my sound capture to "mute" continuously? I enable it in the mixer but I find it disabled again when I close and reopen the mixer.09:00

Ayabaraanyone using dual screen in kde with two different resolutions?12:18
Ayabaracan't quite get this to work the way I want..12:18
scatty_hi, i upgraded to the beta version on my notebook and have now no option for hibernate or standby in the new shutdownmenu. is there any known bug i couldnt find?12:26
scatty_or is it just my missing knowledge in configuration...12:28
joakimproblem: when plugging in a USB gamepad and pressing a button the system logs out. How strange is that?12:28
joakimI tried two different gamepads and they both had the same effect12:29
jeremiahscatty_: If you upgraded to Intrepid then I think you should ask in #ubuntu+112:32
W8TAHshould problems with compiz / kde come here for 8.10 or should they go to the compiz room?12:34
scatty_jeremiah: isnt that #ubuntu+1??12:35
Hobbseejeremiah: this *is* #ubuntu+1.12:35

Hobbseescatty_: with a little green man, or?12:39
scatty_oh, restart i get too12:39
scatty_no, on the userswitch buton12:39
Hobbseeohhhhh12:40
scatty_i guess the green man has only the two options anymore12:40
Hobbseeyeah.  add the "shut down" panel applet12:40
Hobbseethe default green man got a button that gets pressed to switch it over to the shut down panel thing, but the user switcher wouldnt have.12:41
zyrorlthe green man button is the most useless button ever.12:41
Hobbseezyrorl: it used to be useful12:41
zyrorli removed it and added shutdown applet12:41
zyrorlyeah12:41
zyrorlused to.. was the operative word12:41
scatty_oh ok...i see12:41
zyrorlalso when you press the power button now it shows log out or switch user12:41
zyrorlinstead of shutdown/restart etc12:42
zyrorl(which is really annoying)12:42
zyrorlanyone know how ot change that?12:42
Hobbseezyrorl: yeah, i never agreed with the making gnome simpler approach there12:42
Hobbseedon't think you can, short of adding both applets12:42
arkygeekhi12:43
scatty_thanks :) i think i will give the new button a try :)12:43
zyrorldoes anyone know why ekiga 3 wasnt included with intrepid12:43
zyrorland what ever happened to the fabled task applet?12:44
zyrorlthey supposedly were meant to come with the latest version of gnome?12:44
Hobbseezyrorl: no one had actually made a working package of it,t hat was buildable, and they hadn't been providing testing snapshots, like the rest of it.12:44
arkygeeki tried an upgrade, it broke libc6 and gnomemaster suggested iso install.... i burnt the cde..... question is, do i need to reboot it as live or can i do it somehow from my currently running session?12:44
zyrorlekiga has one?12:44
Hobbseeso it was untested code, and required lots of other stuff, released all at the last minute12:44
zyrorloh ok12:44
Hobbseezyrorl: one that will build on a debian system?  Unfortunatley, no it didn't.12:45
Hobbseearkygeek: you'll need to reboot it12:45
zyrorldunno they seem to have it in snapshots dont they?12:45
arkygeekHobbsee: yeah i kinda thought maybe.12:45
blankthemuffinIt's annoying mono 2.0 didn't make it in either.12:45
* arkygeek hates doing this... I have a triple boot system going (iMac)12:45
blankthemuffinBut understandable.12:45
arkygeekHobbsee: will i have to re-create my dev environment and recompile all of my software?12:46
zyrorlindeed12:46
Hobbseearkygeek: probably, yes.12:47
arkygeekheh.... well, I guess I know what I will be doing for the next 3 days :P12:48
arkygeekwhat a bummer... oh well12:48

andresmhany tips on what to could be optimized?13:44
arkygeekremoving conflicting operating system files is still at 0% after about 15 minutes13:45
arkygeekthere it goes... gee that took a long time13:46
danbh_intrepidarkygeek if you are able to upgrade at all, it must mean they've been bug fixing the past day or two13:48
arkygeekdanbh_intrepid: i had to reinstall... upgrade was a huge no-go... i backed up my ~ and am going for it off the live cd13:50
arkygeeki wonder if i should have just formatted it....13:51
arkygeekhmm13:51
danbh_intrepidyes, I think you should have13:53
danbh_intrepiddo you know how to make a separate /home partition?13:53
arkygeekdanbh_intrepid: I am not able to do that on my machine unfortunately :-(13:53
danbh_intrepidwhy not?13:53
nhorningHey there13:53
arkygeekdanbh_intrepid: I have a triple boot system set up on an imac13:53
nhorningso um13:54
nhorningHow do I fix my sound?13:54
arkygeeki even have to make a perm file on the one partition for the swap13:54
danbh_intrepidarkygeek do imacs have a limit on the number of partitions?13:54
nhorningIt was working before a few updates13:54
arkygeeknot if you use their journalling system13:54
arkygeekbut yes... 413:54
danbh_intrepidno extended partitions??13:54
arkygeekonly their own13:55
arkygeeki set it up so long ago i forget the details...13:55
arkygeekbut this is the only way for triple boot unfortunately13:55
nhorningIs pulse broken in intrepid?13:56
nhorningatm?13:56
arkygeeki used to set it up like that on my 'pc' before i made the move to mac13:56
danbh_intrepidIt might just be the imac partitioner, kinda like the way the windows NT/2000/XP refuses to format drives in fat3213:56
arkygeeknhorning: atm == at the moment13:56
arkygeekoh13:57
nhorningyeah13:57
arkygeekhaha  i see... sorry13:57
danbh_intrepidnhorning: its working for me, here try this:  pkillall pulseaudio && pulseaudio -D13:57
arkygeeki thought you were asking what atm was lol13:57
nhorningno process killed13:58
danbh_intrepidnhorning: how do you know?13:58
nhorningit just told me that13:58
danbh_intrepidwell, did pulseaudio start alright?13:59
nhorninghow would I know?13:59
nhorningnothing happened at the propt13:59
danbh_intrepidps -e | grep pulse13:59
nhorningthat last thing did nothing13:59

arkygeeksorry no idea then14:06

andresmharkygeek haha14:07
andresmhit's not a big deal, it's just a bit annoying14:07
andresmhby the way, i am still not able to get my mic to work on intrepid arkygeek, any tips on where I should look for help?14:08
arkygeekwhat kind of machine14:08
andresmhthinkpad x30014:08
andresmh sound card is Intel 82801H (ICH8 Family)14:08
andresmhis there a website where I can see if the card is supported?14:09
arkygeekhere i guess.  try the forums14:09
arkygeek?14:09
danbh_intrepidandresmh: I had to open up the volume control and play with the gazillione options that I found to get my mic working14:09
andresmhdanbh_intrepid: do you have x300 too?14:10
danbh_intrepidnhorning: any progress?14:10
danbh_intrepidandresmh: no14:10
andresmharkygeek: do you mean ubuntuforums.org ?14:10
arkygeeknow the progress here has been stalled at 95% "installed mouseemu"   urfff14:10
arkygeekandresmh: yeah14:10
andresmhthe thing with the forums is that I often find posts from like 4 months ago and I am not sure if I should follow those people's suggestions given that I am using Intrepid with the latest kernel, etc14:12
andresmhfor example, i found this person reporting problems/solutions for ALSA on the same sonund card 82801H: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=74705414:13
* arkygeek wonders how long he should wait with the progress at 95% before terminating and starting over....14:20
gorgaporseahorse asks me for my master password, but i never set one up. how do I reset the password? can I delete some configuration file?14:22
arkygeekgorgapor: if you MUST then you can sudo su -    then passwd14:23
arkygeekI think14:23
arkygeek:P14:23
arkygeekiirc14:23
gorgaporhuh? no not my root password. my seahorse keyring password14:24
arkygeekoh lol heh14:24
gorgaporthere should never be a root password set up, that's why we use sudo14:24
Chousukegorgapor: check if there's a ~/.seahorse14:24
arkygeekgorgapor: thats why I said if you MUST14:24
Chousukeor something14:25
arkygeeksudo updatedb && locate seahorse|grep cfg14:25
arkygeekor something like that14:25
gorgapornope, closest i found was .gconf/apps/seahorse14:25
arkygeeksee what locate seahorse   gives you14:26
arkygeekwithout filtering it...14:26
* arkygeek thinks something has gone horribly wrong. 20 minutes at 95% ...... anyone else see this happen ???14:26
Chousukegorgapor: deleting that didn't reset the master password?14:26
Chousuke... hmm, well I guess that makes sense.14:27
gorgapori haven't tried yet, but i will14:27
arkygeekwhat is ubiquity?  it is taking 100% of my cpu14:28
Chousukeit's the ubuntu installer14:28
arkygeekChousuke: so i think i should kill it.  its been running for an hour.  and 20+ minutes at 95%.  what do you think?14:29
Chousukewere you installing ubuntu? :P14:29
arkygeekyes14:29
Chousukeare you done now?14:29
arkygeekit says 95%  Installed mouseemu14:30
Chousukehm :/14:30
arkygeekfor 20+ minutes14:30
Chousukeinterrupting it will cause your system install to be incomplete14:30
andresmhis there a safe way to configure intrepid so it doesn't ask for password everytime it wants to do some admin stuff? I am not really concerned about security on this machine and I don't like spending 2 seconds typing a password :)14:30
Chousukehowever, looks like it has got stuck.14:30
wtgeeandresm: sudo14:31
andresmhwith safe way i meant that it won't break something14:31
arkygeekshall i ctrl-alt-esc it or kill - pid it14:31
Chousukeandresmh: you could edit /etc/sudoers (using the visudo tool to edit it) to include the NOPASSWD directive14:31
andresmhwtgee: but you have to append sudo to every command and that works for command line stuff14:31
andresmhi mean from the graphical interface (xfce)14:31
Chousukeandresmh: you can also use sudo -s to get a root shell14:31
ChousukeI don't think there's a safe way.14:32
scizzo-andresmh: sudo -s -H14:32
arkygeekChousuke: what is the dif between that and sudo su -14:32
Chousukearkygeek: sudo -s doesn't run su :P14:32
scizzo-andresmh: type yourpassword and then you have a root console14:32
andresmhbut i don't want it at the console14:32
Chousukearkygeek: sudo -s might also be more clever, but usually the end result is the same14:32
andresmhi want it on gnome/xfce14:32
* arkygeek points out that's it's a dangerous world playing 'god'14:33
andresmhlike when I want to change Synaptic or the Users14:33
Chousukearkygeek: or actually; sudo -s is just equivalent to "sudo su", and sudo -i is "sudo su -"14:33
scizzo-andresmh: you never use the administrator as standard gui user14:33
arkygeekheh14:33
andresmhwhy scizzo-?14:33
Chousukebecause it's not needed.14:33
arkygeekwell, I am going to sudo kill the install i guess14:33
arkygeekthis is silly14:33
Chousukeif it is, your system is misconfigured :)14:33
andresmhChousuke: but I end up typing the password every single time i want to do something admin-y14:34
andresmhwhich i find annoying14:34
Chousukeit's a necessary annoyance.14:34
Chousuketo remind you that you shouldn't be doing admin-y stuff all the time14:34
andresmh:)14:34
Chousukemy system uses sudo too (OS X) and I type my password way more often in the screensaver lock screen than in any sudo/admin rights prompt :P14:35
arkygeekhmmmm this time upon starting i get Partman failed with exit code 10. Furtherinfo may be found in /var/log/syslog.  Do you want to try running this step again before continuing? If you do not, your installation  may fail entirely or may be broken14:36
scizzo-andresmh: if you want to do something with X that has to do with administrative tasks there are gksudo and so on also14:36
andresmhi totally hate having to type password for the screensaver, is the frist thing i disable14:36
arkygeeki think i need to reboot.  i can do nothing... any ideas b4 i do that?14:37
scizzo-arkygeek: check syslog?14:37

hg87_what could that be for a problem15:03
hg87_?15:03
danbh_intrepidhg87_: try testing with dig15:03
hg87_route -n looks clean, resolve.conf seems to work because ping works. ping to the router is also no problem.15:03
hg87_what is dig?15:03
hg87_i'd be happy to get it running on a terminal.15:03
_Zeus_any idea why I'm all of the sudden getting Connection Refused errors with PulseAudio?15:04
arkygeekhi15:04
arkygeekthe installer hates me.  It got to 95% again.  and there it sits15:04
_Zeus_what does it say at 95?15:04
arkygeekInstalled mouseemu15:05
hg87_has anyone antoher idea to solve that problem?15:05
_Zeus_what?15:05
danbh_intrepidarkygeek maybe you could try finishing on the command line15:05
hg87_dig seems just to be a dns utility.15:05
arkygeekdanbh_intrepid: how?15:05
danbh_intrepidhg87_: yeah, it is, its good for testing the dns15:05
hg87_another network adapter is also not working.15:05
hg87_danbh_intrepid: yes, but dns works.15:05
danbh_intrepidarkygeek have you rebooted already?15:06
arkygeekyes15:06
arkygeekthis is the second try15:06
arkygeekI formatted the partition this time15:06
hg87_danbh_intrepid: i think that dns isn't the problem. as ping to google works and also pinging security.ubuntu.com works too.15:06
arkygeekoh dear.  mem suage is maxed.  and no swap...15:06
arkygeekthat will be the problem15:06
arkygeeki forget how to make a swap file on15:06

hg87_arkygeek: swapon /dev/XdXX15:07

arkygeekhg87_: i can't.  i have to make a file15:07
danbh_intrepidarkygeek 3 gig is WAY more than enough15:07
arkygeekok  but why is :15:07
arkygeekMem:   3096912k total,  3007168k used,    89744k free,   437056k buffers15:07
arkygeekSwap:        0k total,        0k used,        0k free,  2084464k cached15:07
danbh_intrepidarkygeek what is using the memory?15:08
hg87_arkygeek: dd if=/dev/zero of=/your/file bs=1M count=1024 && swapon /your/file15:08
Bassettshas anyone else had problems with 8139too or sdhci modules causing the install cd to freeze up?15:08
arkygeekdanbh_intrepid: not sure15:08
danbh_intrepidtry top15:08
hg87_arkygeek: top and sort for memory.15:08
hg87_arkygeek: and have a look if /dev/shm or a tmpfs is mounted.15:09
danbh_intrepidshift + O    I think that gets the sort thing15:09
arkygeekhmmm top running.  forget how to sort mem15:09
hg87_i think i'll install a debian, that will work also with internet and network. because i've no idea what the ubuntu guys could have done that that isn't working.15:10
danbh_intrepidhg87_: which isnt working?15:10
Agent47i tried to update to intrepid today and everything works fine just after the message changing package lists15:10

IdleOnewhy have I had to reboot after the past 5 updates?15:16
arkygeekagain, no idea15:16
arkygeekIdleOne: kernel change?15:16
IdleOnearkygeek:  I have only seen one15:16
_Zeus_I have had to, also15:17
_Zeus_every update has wanted a reboot, only one of em had a new kernel15:17
danbh_intrepidarkygeek well, IMHO, I think you should just cancel it, and finish it up from the cli15:17
arkygeekdanbh_intrepid: ok, fine.  BUT... how do i finish from cli?15:17
hg87_arkygeek: and now compare the df -h output with the mount | grep tmpfs output and you know why your ram "seems" to be filled up.15:17
danbh_intrepid_Zeus_: hal, compiz, and maybe others ask for reboots15:17
_Zeus_danbh_intrepid: that's what i figured15:17
_Zeus_but it's abnormal15:18
_Zeus_i guess cause of the volume?15:18
danbh_intrepidarkygeek well, does the memory get freed when you cancel?15:18
hg87_reboot is never (exept of kernel update, to get the new running) nessacarry, but maybe easyier for beginners.15:18
_Zeus_i did try log out and back in15:19
hg87__Zeus_: thats to less. you need to restart the X-server, which is not happening on logout/logon.15:19
_Zeus_hg87_: ctrl+alt+bksp?15:19
danbh_intrepidarkygeek sorry, the way to restart the install is this: sudo apt-get install -f15:19
danbh_intrepidarkygeek at least thats the first command15:19
hg87__Zeus_: try to log out, use ctrl-alt-bksp and logon again.15:20

hg87__Zeus_: what do you want to get working?15:20

IdleOnepast 4 or 5 updates15:21
IdleOnestarting to feel like windows15:21
hg87__Zeus_: not even a glibc update needs a reboot...15:21

hg87_IdleOne: were the last 4-5 updates a kernel update?15:22
lod__hi, is there any plans for OpenOffice.org 3.0 to be ported as default in intrepid15:22

danbh_intrepidlod__: no15:23
arkygeeki don't know.15:23
_Zeus_lod__: no15:23
arkygeeknot sure.  you'd have to look15:23
arkygeekok, so I am killing this15:23
_Zeus_hg87_: what do you use?15:23
hg87_IdleOne: i don't know it exactly, but as i mentioned before, just kernel updates need a reboot. (and you can manage it, that they don't need that. ;))15:23
hg87__Zeus_: for my own, gentoo and debian. and for friends/beginners ubuntu.15:23
arkygeekhmmmm takes sudo to kill ubiquity15:23
kulightIdleOne: non but other updates required rebooting the sys15:24
IdleOneplease refrain from answering questions if you don't know the answer.15:24

chrono_trigger_hI don't know which to attempt to address first18:10
chrono_trigger_hI am currently running a live cd on said laptop now18:10
scobbychrono_trigger_h: its a problem with grub. just edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst and the /etc/fstab and add the correct UUID. you can get that with ls -la /dev/disk/by-uuid18:12

DSpairbsnider:  Well, it's good to know that someone else understands my pain.19:50
myk_robinsonKRF: any issues noted? Mine has a "hiccup" every few minutes that causes the touchpad to freeze for a minute, and the connectoin drops too. It does come back, but it is very annoying. I am using a Belkin USB wifi right now, and it does not exhibit this behavior19:51
bsnidermyk_robinson, intel wifi drivers are a disaster right now19:51
bsniderthey're like katrina19:51
shirish_Zeus_: I have also updated the bug, can you take a look at the bug once more and see if I should still do that command19:51
KRFmyk_robinson, cant confirm, though19:51
myk_robinsonKRF: on Hardy, i installed the compat-wireless/intellinuxwireless drivers, and they worked flawlessly19:52
bsniderbe glad if that's the _only_ problem you're having19:52
myk_robinsonKRF: i wanted to make sure that I wasnt gonna break anything by installin in Intredpid, but I want to image my hard drive first19:52

epsill0nHi! I just installed Ubuntu 8.10 Beta, and it cracshed all my OS - Kernel Panic. Is Thee some way how I can install it?20:15
theBishopmyk_robinson, really?  KDE4's was just starting to look interesting to me20:15
AstralJavamyk_robinson: Heh, and here I am, converting from Gnome to KDE, because of ver.4. :)20:15
myk_robinsonit looks great, but i feel it was released way too early.20:15
myk_robinsonThe Mandriva version is much more functional, but I am spoiled by apt. Cant go back to RPM files :(20:16
epsill0nmyk_robinson happy man, i had a ubuntu crash20:16
DSpairGrrrrrrrrhhhhgggg!!!!20:16
AstralJavamyk_robinson: It was mentioned that at least 4.0 series was for developers only, but this is getting way OT.20:16

chrono_trigger_hah. I have to reinstall?20:22
epsill0nbsnider yes...it was... =(((20:22
myk_robinsonelvirolo: not sure, looks the same as mine...20:23
bsniderchrono_trigger_h, obviosuly something got seriously fouled up during the upgrade. if you do decide to reinstall, create 3 partitions, one for root, one for home, and one swap. don't accept the default partition scheme that the disk suggests20:24

myk_robinsonelvirolo: you may try purging firefox and flashplugin, then reinstalling them. Delete your /home/user/.mozilla directory too20:26
myk_robinsonperhaps it is profile corruption20:26
chrono_trigger_hI backed up my home directory so it won't be that back. I'll just install 8.0420:27

chrono_trigger_hbsnider: Is the networking problem fixed?20:27
bsniderwhat networking problem?20:28
myk_robinsonin Gnome, is there a key to press to open a directory in the terminal? I have the nautilus script installed, but I am more of a keyboard person20:28
chrono_trigger_hbsnider: there is a bug in the latest network manager that has duplicate entries of the 128 encryption. I won't be able to wirelessly connect to my router at home that uses a 64-bit hex encryption20:29
elvirolomyk_robinson: i tried deleting my profile, but it doens't work. by purging you mean apt-get remove --purge ?20:29
bsniderchrono_trigger_h, if you say so. it may have been fixed20:29

ubottuLaunchpad bug 279262 in network-manager "network-manager After reboot network is totally broken" [Undecided,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/27926220:31
bsniderchrono_trigger_h, grab today's livecd and see if you can connect with it before you decide what to do20:31
chrono_trigger_hbsnider: can you see if you click Connect to Other Wireless networks. And look at the dropdown for wireless security, is there an option for 64-bit hex?20:32
bsnidernot specifically no20:33
shirishbsnider: another one bug 280372 but I'm guessing that one is fixed20:33
ubottuLaunchpad bug 280372 in network-manager "Web-browsers start in Offline Mode" [Undecided,Fix released] https://launchpad.net/bugs/28037220:33
bsniderchrono_trigger_h, wpa2 should be good enough20:34
chrono_trigger_hbsnider: wpa2 isn't compatible with my router.20:34
bsniderwell give the livecd from today a try anyway20:35
chrono_trigger_hbsnider: I can't exactly burn a live cd. I'd have to reinstall first and then grab the iso20:36
elvirolomyk_robinson: still doesn't work, even after purging :(20:41
myk_robinsonelvirolo: in that case, i have no idea. do your other plugins work?20:42
