ubuntucan anyone help me with the kubuntu intrepid beta? i'm having really bad problems, with both an upgraded installation from hardy and the live CD. basically, the desktop does not exist, for some reason it's taking whatever window is in focus, maximizing it, and making that be the background. This includes everything including the K menu, this konversation window I have open, and any right-click menu01:09
ubuntuon top of that, any window that is maximized is not displayed at all01:09

mnwhat kernel is intrepid using?01:29
nickrud2.6.2701:30
nickrudI've been having issues with the nvidia driver blanking the screen; happens a few times a minute after start, then tapers off to only occasionally. Sometimes I'll see screen tears instead of a full blank. Any ideas out there?01:31
RAOFnickrud: that happens each time the card changes power state, if you've got a laptop.01:31
nickrudnope, a desktop. 8800gt01:32
nickrudbut that's something to look at. Do you have an idea how I could check that?01:33
RAOFIt might still be changing power state; check nvidia-settings.01:33
nickrud<egg on face>Somehow I ended up with the NV driver</egg on face (less)>01:35
nickrudRAOF, thanks much01:38
mnIn general, is Ubuntu upgraded in small increments or is everything upgraded on the day of the release of the new OS?01:38
nickrudmn, if you don't run the devel version, it will happen all at once (only after you permit)01:39
mnwell i just know i had *a bunch* of packages to upgrade all at once today and most of them had something to do with the kernel or other low-level software01:39
nickrudmn if you're running intrepid, you're using the devel version. You might get 0, or a hundred packages daily01:40
mnno im running 8.0401:40
nickrudmn, then those were probably staged to update together. Some packages have tight dependencies on others01:41
mnah, yes that's probably right01:41
mnwhat is package "dbus"?01:42
nickrudmn and #ubuntu is the best place for 8.04 questions in general01:42
mnyeah but im sure 8.1 has dbu01:43
mndbus*01:43
nickrudso does 8.04. Dbus has been around for several releases now01:43
calcOOo 3.0.0-2ubuntu1 should be done building in about 8 or so hours for whoever wants to play with it (see PPA)01:44

calcsomeone just last week complained amd64 wasn't installable since the 'all' packages hadn't finished building yet on i386 buildd01:50
elliottany tips on getting my ketboard working   again01:51
calcthey just needed to wait a few more hours, heh :)01:51
cmerkthe new version (0.7.0) of the panorama stiching program hugin was released 10 days ago (it's been 2 years in the making). However intrepid still has the svn3191 beta5 package from debian unstable. Where should I put in a request to make sure the new version gets into the intrepid release.01:52
bsnidercalc, if they don't work, can i blame you?01:52
calcnot if it hasn't finished building on i386 yet01:53
calcif it finished building on i386 and still won't install then there is a problem01:53
calcbut i seriously doubt there will be any issue since rc4 and final are basically the same and rc4 was there since last week01:53
bsnideryes but if it installs and for some reason there's a bug here and there01:53
calcbsnider: well yea that is why it isn't in intrepid01:53
calcooo 3.0 is course buggy it was just released and sun just pushes it out basically :\01:54
calcthats why it won't go into backports for at least a month or two01:54
bsniderare you saying sun just all of a sudden decides something should be released without doing proper bug testing?01:57
bsnideris steve ballmer in charge of sun too?01:57
nixternalanyone else having problems when installing with drive encryption?01:58
nixternalfirst, grub isn't correct after install, and then after fixing that, I get the BusyBox garbage about /root/dev on /dev/.static/dev failed01:58
elliottJontheEchidna: hey, it crashed a few times again on me, the keyboard stoped working, etc. it got so unusablethat I just went back to a hardy live cd02:04
elliotti want to make a bug report, but it owould help to know more than "kwin" for the problem02:05

myk_robinsonhey, just testing.. DIdnt see any traffic in this channel..02:28

myk_robinsonno prob, was just confused due to no activity, which is unusal for this channel02:29
RAOFNot any more than pointing you to the kvm bug.  If virtualbox still uses the old removed USB method, you'll need to take it up with them :)02:29
myk_robinsonmy question is how do I enable USB support in VirtualBox 2.0.2 in Intrepid? I have added the fstab entry and edited the mountkernfs.sh.. The devices show but are greyed out02:30
myk_robinsonwhat is the kvm bug, please?02:30
myk_robinsonno activity on the vbox channel :(02:30

rafaland, after that, will I be able to easly switch to regular 8.10 once it is out02:31
bsniderRAOF, is virtualbox a frontend for kvm or xen?02:31

myk_robinsonusing the full blown version, downloaded the .deb. from the website02:33
RAOFAnd we're utterly unable to support that, obviously :)02:34
myk_robinsonno big deal, just asking around. sorry02:34
myk_robinsonhopefully someone will eventually answer at the vbox channel02:34
RAOFThat's OK.  The bug is a pointer to what the actual problem is, at least.  We just can't fix it for them :)02:35
myk_robinsonI have a friend here in town who got it working, but he isn't answering his phone. Perhaps he'll be around tomorrow.02:35
myk_robinsonother than that, so far so good. Guys have finally made me a Gnome convert02:36
limcore8.10 beta is not horribly unstable? as in, it will not explode monitor or delete harddrive? :)02:40

elliottdoes anyone know why my display would be so broken in intrepid kubuntu? it happens in both an upgraded install and livecd, in 32 bit and 64 bit, and with both default and ATI-specific video drivers02:53
elliottwhat's happening is that whatever window is in focus appears maximized and pixellated as te background image02:54
elliotteven popup menus and the K menu do this02:54
bsniderbecause the ati drivers aren't good?02:54
elliottwindows in general are hard to use, don't display correctly after returning from being minimized, and they don't show up at all when maximized02:54
elliottbut it happens with the default drivers02:55
bsniderand so?02:55
elliotti figured those wouldn't be ATI specific02:56
smil3yelliott>  have you reconfigured x at all yet?02:56
elliottno, what would i haveto change?02:56
bsniderthe open source ati drivers are developed by ati and novell02:56
smil3yelliott>  remember your using beta software so anything can break at any time, try sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg02:57
smil3yelliott>  or reboot, and choose one of the recovery kernels and go through the x reconfigure02:58
bsnideri'm pretty sure fglrx doesn't work at all right now, so it might be better just to blow away xorg.conf and let the x server choose the best driver02:59
limcorecan I install just kernel+drivers from 8.10, but keep applications, xorg, kde, etc?02:59
smil3yelliott>  maybe try vesa or free ati driver when in the recovery kernel, one of those should work03:00

squeegeeI've been using 8.10 for a couple of weeks without problems that I couldn't solve.04:00
bsniderthen i don't care what you use04:00
Ward1983bsnider by that i mean, if it does not work i will just use the older version....04:00
Ward1983squeegee ah nice thats what i wanted to hear04:01
Ward1983my main concern was about the ICH8 / ICH9 ethernet driver that seemed to be able to render a NIC completely useless04:01
dhngI upgraded to Intrepid but now when I log into Ubuntu I'm stuck with an empty Gnome screen04:01
Ward1983but i read it is blacklisted now04:02
squeegeeI will warn, though:  When I attempted to upgrade an 8.04 to 8.10, it killed the 8.04 where it wouldn't even boot anymore.  From scratch, though, has been good for me in both x86 and x64.04:02
bsniderWard1983, that problem was fixed04:02
bsnideryou'r ebehind the times04:02
dhngHow do I get anything to run from within Gnome? I'm stuck with an empty screen with just my desktop background.04:02
Ward1983squeegeeyes i killed my system once like that too, upgrading is just something i never attempt since then04:02
bsniderlinux isn't going to release a kernel that zaps cards like that04:02
squeegeeIt also fixed a problem with my K8WE machine that would fail to install 8.04 because of SATA issues.04:02
dhngand my mouse doesn't work04:03
Ward1983bsnider it was a beta or something04:03
bsniderdhng, that sounds like a hard lockup to me04:03
Ward1983squeegee ah nice improvement is allways good :)04:03
bsniderdhng, a kernel problem04:04
dhngbsnider: the mouse works at the login screen04:04
dhngbsnider: but yes, when booting up my laptop I'm getting a ton of kernel problems04:04
bsniderdhng, and then the system locks up04:04
bsniderdhng, might try a clean install04:05
dhngbsnider: only when I try to log in gnome04:05
Ward1983is that ICH8 / ICH9 driver blacklisted now? just ot make sure04:05
dhngbsnider: not an option04:05
bsnidergnome can't lock up a system04:05
Ward1983dhng is it just files that you need of the machine?04:05
dhngWard1983: yes04:06
Ward1983dhng you could just copy those after you boot with a ubuntu cd, and do a clean install after you copied everything04:06
bsniderdhng, if your mouse is inavailable and the screen is frozen, there's a driver in use at that time that's locking up the kernel04:07
dhngbsnider: I was able to use the mouse yesterday, but I just ran apt-get update and now it's stuck04:07
Ward1983:o wow lol04:07
bsniderdhng, there was a kernel update today04:08
Ward1983i think i might wait with 8.10 now i hear that :p04:08
Singerhello04:08
squeegeeMandriva 2009 failed the same way - boot kernel, then blank screen.04:08
bsniderdhng, you can try booting a previous kernel04:08
Singerdoes anyone have any news about the atheros 5007 support?04:08
dhngbsnider: I can try, but how is it gonna help?04:08
Singersomeoen said it will be part of 8.10 but its still not working fo rme04:08
bsniderdhng, just try it04:08
smil3ydhng>  same thing happened to me, dependency issues so it wouldnt dload gnome packages, you have any other win managers installed?  try another and delete all packages asking for dependencies, then re install ubuntu-desktop........... worked ok for me04:09
bsniderSinger, should work04:09
Singerbsnider: I cant' figure out how to get it to work04:09
dhngsmil3y: I also had kubuntu-desktop installed04:09
Ward1983jesus :s04:09
bsniderSinger, ath5k should handle that04:09
Singerbsnider: if I went k-buntu it shouldn't matter right?04:09
smil3ydhng>  boot into that, should work04:09
bsniderSinger, no04:09
dhngsmil3y: nope, can't load the config files04:10
dhngsmil3y: the Intrepid upgrade borked it04:10
Singerbsnider: okay, let me get it installed and see... the live cd didn't work for me..04:10
smil3ydhng>  boot into command line?04:10
dhngsmil3y: yes, I can, but what's the point04:10
bsniderSinger, you boot the livecd and i'll get it working'04:10
smil3ydhng>  and then apt get remove the packages that are causing problems, shouldnt be too many04:11
td123so will oo.o 3.0 be included in 8.10 orr is it too late?04:11
bsnidertd123, too late04:11
dhngsmil3y: the problem is I have no idea what's causing the problems04:11
Singerbsnider: too late, I've started the install already; bu give me 10 or so till its done?04:11
dhngsmil3y: when I upgraded to Intrepid, X wouldn't even load.  I had to replace the conf file with a backup version04:11
smil3ydhng> well if you boot into command line and run apt-get update  and apt-get upgrade it will give you a list of dependency problems im sure of it04:11
Singerbsnider: wait, 32bit vs 64bit.. would that make a difference?04:12
saint-takeshianyone else had issues with 3d acceleration/rendering with intrepid04:12
smil3ydhng>  your describing the same problem i had 2 days ago04:12
saint-takeshi\s\?04:12
td123Singer: if your using it for "normal" usage, you won't notice anything...04:12
dhngsmil3y: I am using a wireless connection, and if I'm in command line I have no idea how to connect04:12
Singerokay, I'm using k 64-bit.. hoping to get wireless to work once its installed04:13
smil3ydhng>  sudo ifup ath0  or whatever the name of your wireless is04:13
td123Singer: in my experience, i386 had less workarounds04:13
Singerok, let me download that04:14
Singerand see,04:14
smil3ydhng> replace ath0 with name of wireless or connect ethernet04:14
Singermmm, 1 hour to download04:14
smil3yearly day tomorrow, im out, gnite04:15
saint-takeshifor example, glxgears acts a little strange...the "gears" image flickers, and if i switch focus to anything else, or move the window, it kills my laptop04:15
td123Singer: to download 8.10 beta?04:16
Singertd123: yeah04:16
bsniderSinger, no, no difference at all04:16
Singerbsnider: okay, I've got about 10 minutes till its installed (8.10/Kbuntu/AMD64)04:17
Ward1983what will change in ubuntu 8.410 between now and the relase date04:17
Ward1983is that known?04:17
Ward19838.1004:17
td123Ward1983: basically just bug fixes04:17
saint-takeshiWard1983: lots and lots of bug fixes.04:18
noriyukiHi only one question... after I installed bluez utils, why it keeps saying the command "hidd" has not been found04:18
Ward1983td123 but all that stuff i heard here a couple of minutes ago made me worry, will they be able to get all that out?04:18
td123Ward1983: there could also be major things fixed if found (like the e1000 brick issue :P) but those are less likely04:18
bsniderSinger, i asked you to boot the livecd04:18
td123Ward1983: what will they get out?04:18
Ward1983crashing system after apt-get update is simply crazy04:18
td123Ward1983: its beta...04:19
Singerbsnider: by the time you said that, I've already started the install to the HD..04:19
Ward1983td123 yes but 2 weeks from release :s04:19
Singerbsnider: so on my laptop i'm doing that right now (I'm also downloading the i386) on this gaming PC04:19
Ward1983td123 what makes you so sure the release wont do that?04:19
saint-takeshioh, has anyone else had that thing (probably laptop-specific, but i'm not sure) where gnome-power-manager periodically dies?04:19
ZXY在不阿?04:19
Ward1983hahaha04:20

ZXY我电脑出问题了04:20
bsniderSinger, the itanium is the only cpu that can't run 32 bit code04:20
ZXY这个系统不是太好用的阿04:20
td123Ward1983: if this problem is specific to you then you should report it or it won't be fixed...04:20
Singerbsnider: okay, I've cancelled the download.. the install is still going04:20
ZXY没人说话?04:20
Ward1983td123 no it seemd to be a generalproblem a few people here a bit earlyer had it04:20

Singerbsnider: yes it did04:35
robbaksmil3y: Where did you set the device name?04:35
bsniderSinger, try putting ath5k in the /etc/modules file and rebooting04:36
Singerwird, it also loaded the module ath_pci04:37
smil3yrobbak>  i didnt, thats all done through the kernel when you plug it in or connect via bt, when i plugged in my card i got a popup saying it detected a cell broadband card, and would i like to configure it........... very nice04:37
bsniderSinger, wha?04:37
Ward1983iPeipei ok thanx again04:37
dhngsmil3y: running apt-get upgrade gives me an error with processing linux-image-2.6.27-7-generic_2.6.27-7.11_i386.deb04:37
bsniderSinger, have you got the linux-restricted-modules package installed?04:38
dhngfor some reason my /boot directory has 0 byte free04:38
Singerbsnider: when I was using 8.04, I compiled madwifi and it came to a module called ath_pci which then made it working04:38
bsniderSinger, i are confussed04:39
robbaksmil3y: Hmm seems like it. I plugged in via the cable, and it appeared in the menu. Hmm, I'll have to go digging in the scripts, it seems.04:39
Singerbsnider: however in 8.10, I did a lsmod and it has both ath5k and ath_pci04:39
bsniderSinger, how did you just ionstall intrepid?04:39
Singerclean install from the cd,04:39
Singerwiping everything04:39
smil3ydhng>  yeah i had a problem with that kernel too, im using the hardy kernel 2.6.24-19-generic04:39
bsniderok, remove the linux-restricted-modules package04:40
bsniderath_pci is part of madwifi and is obviously conflicting04:40
smil3yrobbak>  yeah if you tail -f /var/log/messages when you plug it in, you should see it appear04:40
squeegeewoohoo - I got 8.10 x64 to come up.  Changed some BIOS settings, passed a few boot params, and it's up and running.  Whew.04:41
dhngsmil3y: the latest kernel I have is 2.6.24-1704:41
Singerbsnider: that's not installed (couldnt' find package)04:41
dhngsmil3y: it seems that the installer can't write to /boot04:41
bsniderSinger, try synaptic04:41
dhngsmil3y: it thinks that there's no free space left04:42
smil3ydhng>  well that may be your problem then?  whats df -h04:42

shirishbsnider: i38604:46
bsnidershirish, which mirror are you using?04:46
shirishbsnider: the indian mirror04:46
bsniderit's broken04:46
bsnidertry another one04:46
shirishbsnider: http://in.archive.ubuntu.com04:46

dhngsmil3y: so what do I remove?04:47
Singerbsnider: okay.. that worked.. so I have to remove the package that provides restricted modules04:48
bsnideryes04:48

bsniderpackages get to the other mirrors a lot slower04:52
shirishbsnider: that's the reason why I like/liked the indian mirror, brokeness can also be avoided sometimes ;)04:54
bsniderit doesn't seem so in this case04:54
shirishbsnider: right, unfortunately :)04:54
Singerokay, I offically hate KDE.. is there an way to switch to ubuntu or do I need to reinstall?04:59
bsniderwhat's wrong with the k desktop environment?04:59
shirishbsnider: it automatically started download the kernel-image after it rebuilt the cache04:59
shirishbsnider: should it be doing that? also I gave an install and then a purge for the same kernel, for I thought it to be an issue, which command would it resolve, the first the second or both?05:00
Singerbsnider: I like the way that gnome has the programs menu, its a tree menu rather then the way KDE does it with the vista style..05:00
dhngwould it matter if I remove some of the older kernel images in /boot to make space for the new one?05:00
bsniderdhng, no05:01
Singerbsnider: I guess I just learned that beta = real beta, it just froze up :)05:01
bsniderSinger, install the ubuntu-desktop package05:01
bsnidershirish, it continues trying to apply previously committed changes05:02
shirishbsnider: dang, I wouldn't want to purge it now that I know the reason what happened05:02
dhngbsnider: do I need to update grub if I remove the kernel images?05:03
bsnidershirish, just reinstall it05:03
bsniderdhng, that will happen automatically05:03
shirishbsnider: but after installation, the next committed change is purged and from what I remember of purging, it means that the whole image would have to be downloaded again :(05:04
bsnidershirish, pureg means the config files are also removed05:04
shirishbsnider: right, that as well05:05
shirishbsnider: dang, but thanx anyway :)05:05

Nyquist333I have a question about setting eth0 MTU using "Edit Connections". It always goes back to 1500 after reboot. Any ideas?05:25
travisivartblankthemuffin: all i can seem to find are dvd isos, could you link me to the page though?05:28
Nyquist333Does anyone else get "sector read" errors using the intrepid live CD? I can't get it to install.05:29
blankthemuffinhttp://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/beta05:29
blankthemuffinNyquist333, sounds like your image downloaded or burned incorrectly, did you verify both steps?05:30
Nyquist333Yes, granted, I had the vbe_init05:30
Nyquist333issue, that was just fixed.05:31
Nyquist333I haven't tried it for awhile. I have about 6 burns of intrepid amd64 live CD that do not work. Even tried the generic_ide_all flag (or something)05:32
dhngI'm getting a bunch of errors when running apt-get upgrade05:32
blankthemuffinNyquist333, but did you verify the actual ISO downloaded correctly?05:32
dhngdependency problems05:32
dhnghow do I take care of the dependency problems?05:32
travisivartthanks blankthemuffin05:32
travisivartdhng: i think the preferred method is to do update-manager -c05:33
Nyquist333No, I did not. I got it from the link at www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/beta05:33
dhngtravisivart: what does the -c do?05:34
travisivartNyquist333: if you're on ubuntu right now you can check the md5sum of the iso you downloaded using md5sum   (md5sum intrepid-blah-blah.iso)05:34
Nyquist333I've triend 6 different images from the daily builds. Could they all be bad? On different days?05:34
travisivart       -c, --check-dist-upgrades05:34
travisivart              Check if a new distribution release is available05:34
Nyquist333cool, I'll try that.05:34
travisivartNyquist333: and on that page you linked, the correct md5sums are listed here: http://releases.ubuntu.com/releases/8.10/MD5SUMS05:35
dhngI'm getting a bunch of dependency issues when installing ubuntu-desktop.  How do I resolve them?05:37
Nyquist333ok, I'll try it again, thanks.05:38
dhnga bunch of packages are not configured yet05:38
Nyquist333On another issue. Has anyone seen a problem with gnome windows not repainting unless you move the mouse over them. Happens in menus too.05:39
dhngis it advisable to run apt-get remove ubuntu-desktop and then apt-get install ubuntu-desktop?05:41
travisivarti don't think that would solve anything since ubuntu-desktop is only a meta-package05:42
blankthemuffinYeah, I'm getting a bit of something like that Nyquist333.05:42
Nyquist333dhng, I don't know how to use apt-get to do this, but the package manager does show what is installed for each package including dependencies. You should be able to check the latest. Maybe try "remove completely" then reinstall.05:44
dhngNyquist333: I'm getting a bunch of dependency problems, whereas each package requires the one before it to be configured05:44
Nyquist333Did you crash during an update or something? I've not been that unluckly yet. I've been updating from 8.04 on the same machine since Alpha release.05:46

crdlbwhich is being used as a system tray by nm-applet (which isn't really an applet) to hold that wifi selector07:19
andresmhcrdlb: yeah, not knowing it was called notification area was my problem :)07:20

andresmhwhat i still don't get is why if I move an .desktop app to /usr/shares/applications it doesn't show it in gnomedo as the docs say07:37
RAOFYou mean "/usr/share/applications", right?07:38
andresmhyes07:38
RAOFThere are a number of possible reasons.  The library that Do uses to do that was recently broken, or your .desktop file could have 'Hidden=True', or could be malformed.07:38
andresmhum, how do I know if I have the broken one? i do update every day07:40

sentiecehow can i remap the live cd to use a iso instead of the cd while it is running?09:37
sentieceor otherwise burn a cd while running the live cd, given the iso is on harddisk and i have swap09:38
xjohnthomasxhi all -- ubuntu intrepid keeps losing my internet connection. it's completely unpredictable, and i need help figuring out what it could be! my signal and router are fine, because i can connect with other computers. i can also connect to it with the 8.10 computer immediately upon restart or starting up a session.. however, after a while, it just cuts out, and then won't reconnect, even though the card is still responding to the net09:39
xjohnthomasxwo09:39
xjohnthomasx<xjohnthomasx> rkmanager and the iwlist commands -- and it shows the various available wireless nets.. just tries to connect, gets the good signals, and then in the end doesn't connect!!! what is going on??? i have tried finding bugs, and there seem to be some similar, but none exactly the same... i need to hear some feedback from some experts in here :)09:39

petererer'fraid not, mine just works, but i've not tried it with intrepid yet.10:26
corphello10:27
corpi'm trying out the intrepid beta10:28
corpi'm using in on amazon EC2, so it has the 2.6.21.7-2.fc8xen kernel10:28
corpanyone experienced issues with that combination?10:29
ikoniacorp: where did you get that kernel10:35
ikoniathat looks like a fedora 8 xen kernel10:35
corpikonia: that kernel comes with the amazon EC2 AMI: http://developer.amazonwebservices.com/connect/entry.jspa?externalID=1613&categoryID=10110:35
corpi guess it's intrepid alpha10:36
ikoniacorp: I don't think thats intended for ubuntu use10:36
ikoniajust looking at the name convention alone10:36
corpwell i dont think there are any other available xen kernels10:36
ikoniacorp possibly amazon doesn't support anything other an a fedora 8, or fedora based platform10:36
corpi'm not too concerned about that10:37
corpbut this is the intrepid alpha. how can i upgrade to the beta?10:37
ikoniawell the kernel is going to cause you an issue with the update10:38
corpthe update would try to update the kernel? I guess so10:38
ikoniacorp: and if you just use update manager to keep up to date, you'll find your using the latest beta10:38
corpupdate manager?10:38
ikoniayes, the package manager10:38
corpwould apt-get dist-upgrade get me there?10:38
ikoniaapt-get upgrade would10:39
corpi see it wants to install some things, but not a kernel image10:39
corpis there a definitive way to see which release of a dist i'm using?10:39
ikoniacorp lsb_release -a10:40
corpthanks ikonia10:47
corpone more question10:47
corpruby 1.8.7 is default on intrepid. i want to downgrade to 1.8.6.11110:47
corpwhat's the best way?10:47
xjohnthomasxcan anyone help why my cdrom on intrepid is failing to mount??????10:49
ikoniacorp can't really10:52
corpikonia: can't?10:52
ikoniacorp no, can't10:52
corpof course you can10:52
ikoniacorp: then why are you asking how to do it10:52
corpikonia: i'm asking 'the best way'10:53
ikoniacorp: the only way would be to build and package it yourself10:53
ikoniaas the package is not available in the 8.10 repos10:53
corpthere are already packages for 1.8.6.111 out there for hardy10:53
ikoniacorp but your not using hardy - so they shouldn't be used10:53
corpikonia: so it's better to create a new package than use the old one?10:53
ikoniayes10:53
xjohnthomasxikonia, my cdrom drive wont mount in 8.10... you know why?10:53
corpi'm wondering if i can base the new one on the old then10:53
ikoniaso the dependencies are met10:53
ikoniatotally yes10:54
corpthe dependencies are really the same for the two packages10:54
xjohnthomasxikonia, can you tell me why?10:54
ikoniacorp: use the old package source package to use as a bass10:54
corpikonia: ok. usually i use apt-get source to grab those. is there another way to do it?10:54
ikoniacorp: just edit things like teh dependency version etc etc so it falls in line with 8.1010:54
corpso i can get the .dsc files and all that10:54
ikoniacorp: your way would work fine too10:54
ikoniacorp: yes,10:54
xjohnthomasxikonia, the tail log says it's an i/o error..10:55
corpikonia: so i'd have to add hardy's repo to grab that?10:55
liwwhat's the status of multi-head support in intrepid, using free ati drivers only?10:55
ikoniaxjohnthomasx: I'm in the middle of a conversation - it's rude to just keep pushing a question on me10:55
ikoniacorp: ahh, that brings an interesting dileama10:55
xjohnthomasxikonia, sorry.. just was keeping you posted on the situation10:55
ikoniaxjohnthomasx: your not posting your talking/highlighting me10:56
ikoniacorp: you can add it as a "source" repo only10:56
xjohnthomasxikonia, you seem to be the most knowledgeable in here.. :)10:56
corpikonia: ah, good idea10:56
ikoniaxjohnthomasx I don't think so10:57
ikoniacorp: hand on heart, I'm not sure if that will cause any issues with dependency chekcing if you download a package from the 8.10 repo (It shouldn't but I've never mixed source repos from a differnt version with package from a current)10:57
corpikonia: in this case, i dont think so. the deps for the two are most likely identical10:58
corpoh well, maybe not...10:58
ikoniacorp minor changes in the versions, but when you do an apt-get update to get the new repo visable it checks ALL dependencis for ALL packages, not not just the one you grab10:58
ikoniaactually, I worded that bad, let me try again10:59
ikoniait gets the repo info for the whole repo, not just teh current one10:59
ikoniayou should be fine, just something to keep an eye on10:59
corphmm now i get E: Could not open file /var/lib/apt/lists/us.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_hardy_main_source_Sources - open (2 No such file or directory)10:59
ikoniacorp does the file exist ?11:00
corpno . i just added those source repos to sources.list11:00
corpmaybe i need to update?11:00
ikoniacorp: %10011:00
ikoniaso it can download the info11:00
ikonia(this is what I was saying a few lines earlier)11:00
corpyeah. hmm11:01
corpwe'l see what happens11:01
xjohnthomasxikonia, can you take a look at my issue, too, while youre helping with the other issue of corp?11:01
ikoniaxjohnthomasx i/o error normally means the cdrom in the drivei s bad11:01
corpit's too bad 1.8.7 was included in intrepid. it's a somewhat buggy release of ruby11:02
xjohnthomasxikonia, it's not. it's the intrepid rom i used to install the whole system, and i did a md5sum check before i did that, and it was perfectly fine!11:02
xjohnthomasx(it successfully installedl the system, too... )11:02
ikoniatry another cdrom11:02
ikoniaany one11:02
xjohnthomasxikonia, also, when i press the eject button on the cd drive, it opens, and then it closes right away without staying open!11:02
corpikonia: so now apt-get source ruby1.8 still pulls down the newer version. should i temporarily remove the intrepid repos from source list?11:03
ikoniaxjohnthomasx: use "eject cdrom"11:03
ikoniacorp no, you need to use apt-cache policy11:03
ikoniacorp: thats what I said about the version conflicts11:03
xjohnthomasxikonia, it says no media in rom.. and doesnt eject anything.. i will try to grab the cdrom really quick when it opens before it clsoes...11:03
corpikonia: hmm. i don't know how to use that11:04
ikoniaxjohnthomasx may be better to reboot and put a cdrom in before ubuntu boots11:04
ikoniaxjohnthomasx: save damaging any hardware11:04
ikoniacorp: man it, it's not too hard11:04
ikoniacorp: I think there is also a line on apt-get you can say apt-get repo package11:04
corpreally?11:05
ikoniacorp not %100 certain on that, but if you man it you may find there is a method11:05
corpah, /etc/apt/preferences maybe11:05
ikoniaI remember some discussion about it a while ago, but that doesn't mean it exists11:05
corpThe APT preferences file overrides the11:06
corp       priorities that APT assigns to package versions by default, thus giving the user control over which one is selected for installation.11:06
corpbingo11:06
xjohnthomasxikonia, how could a freshly burned cd, with a correct md5, get corrupted, when it properly installed the whole system just a lil while ago?11:07
ikoniaxjohnthomasx I don't know11:07
ikoniaxjohnthomasx: it may not be corrupted, hence why I said try another cd11:07
xjohnthomasxi tried another, and another worked11:08
xjohnthomasxshould i just reburn the cd, and see??11:08
ikoniaif you want11:08
corphmm, i'm not getting man apt_preferences11:11
ikoniaman apt-cache11:11
corpi looked in there. you can list policies11:12
corpbut to override, you need to edit this file11:12
ikoniaand set policies11:12
ikoniaapt-ache policy will set a polict too11:12

corpikonia: do you know i can 'pin' a 'metapackage'? the 'ruby' package seems to encompass many others, and its version is 4.111:24
ikoniasorry what are you asking11:25
corpwhen you do apt-get install ruby, it actually installs a number of packages11:25
corpi want to pin the version of the packages installed by ruby, by pinning ruby, not by pinning ruby1.8.6.111-ubuntu211:26

jmworx1) How can I configure the network for the whole machine and not just my user?15:35
jmworx2) Why is it that even my user network config doesn't get saved?15:35
LogicalDashjmworx: Are you using network-manager?15:35
jmworx3) How can I *apply* the settings I create without the network applet (it crashed and I was stuck)?15:36
DanaG"System Setting" under networks editor can do that.15:36
jmworxLogicalDash: No, network-manager wasn15:36
jmworxwasn't installed by default and with no net connection, it's hard to install it!15:36
LogicalDashjmworx, uhhh, according to the page linked in the channel topic, network-manager 0.7 is supposed to be installed by default15:37
jmworxDanaG: there was a check there, but it didn't help15:37
DanaG /etc/network/interfaces should still work if you want to do things that way.15:37
LogicalDashjmworx, maybe you have an outdated install disc?15:38
jmworxLogicalDash: Well, I did a default install and it just wasn't15:38
DanaGAnyway, I have to leave now.15:38
jmworxDanaG: Sure, but that's not exactly what I call user friendly (yes, I can also add my ifconfig/route commands in rc.local or whatever is the equivalent now)15:38
jmworxLogicalDash: I installed the beta and I've updated everything15:39
LogicalDashjmworx: Wait, a moment ago you said your beta machine had no 'net connection. Cognitive dissonance!15:39
jmworxLogicalDash: Every time I booted, I had to configure things again using the network applet15:40
jmworxthen the net applet crashed and since I didn't know the name, I wasn't able to restart it15:40
LogicalDashjmworx: the network applet is network manager's applet15:40
LogicalDashjmworx: it is called nm-applet15:40
jmworxso I was stuck with no way to get the network back up short of using the command-line ifconfig/route commands15:40
LogicalDashjmworx: so you should be able to do an alt+f2 nm-applet15:40

jmworxLogicalDash: it turns out that network-manager was indeed installed15:41
jmworxbut that doesn't really help me15:42
LogicalDashalright, I would guess that when network manager crashes it fails to release its DBUS service, for now you could work around that by going into the system monitor and killing the service yourself15:42

danbh_intrepidI think it should be marked incomplete16:12
jmworxLogicalDash: I'm done with the ranting now.16:12
bsnideri don't think they have enbough devs to fix the little bugs16:13
jmworxdanbh_intrepid: That bug was a regression that occurred *after* Feisty was released.16:13
jmworxi.e. they released a kernel patch that broke *all* HDA soundcards on *all* 64-bit machines16:13
danbh_intrepidjmworx: yes, but unless the bug causes data loss, it wont get fixed once the devs move onto a new kernel.  Thats why the guy asked you to test on the latest kernel16:14
jmworxand it was obvious because you couldn't even insert the module on a 64-bit machine (i.e. you can see the bug even if you didn't have that card)16:14
jmworxso there was enough information to test for everyone with a 64-bit box16:14

ConstantineXVIbsnider: so doing this: http://www.varesano.net/blog/fabio/linux+howto+two+fingers+scrolling+a+regular+synaptics+notebook+touchpad would have no effect at all?16:16
danbh_intrepidjmworx: but does the problem still exist in Hardy? or Intrepid?16:16
LogicalDashjmworx, sounds to me like you're still ranting. About a bug for a previous release. Classy.16:16

ayan4m1Anyone know if the linux-image packages are currently being messed with in intrepid's apt sources?16:16
jmworxThat is, the first few months of feisty were fine, it's only after a few months that they broke that16:16
danbh_intrepidjmworx: yeah, well that IS how ubuntu works.  It was broken sound.  They fixed it in later releases, but there isn't going to be a backport because its just broken sound.  You can resolve the issue by just upgrading to the latest release16:17
LogicalDashjmworx: If the bug is fixed now, then it is not an appropriate subject for the #ubuntu+1 channel.16:17
danbh_intrepidLogicalDash: please stop16:17
jmworxSo I had to install alsa on top of standard kernel and it would work, and then another update would break it and I had to re-compile ALSA16:18
ayan4m1jmworx: What chipset was this with?16:18
jmworxdanbh_intrepid: Just to make a couple things clear. Sound worked perfectly in the initial Feisty release. It only got broken during an update. At that point, there was no other version released.16:19
jmworxdanbh_intrepid: basically, it was carelessness with a patch to that kernel because the vanilla kernel had no issue16:19
jmworxayan4m1: hda on x86-6416:19
bsniderjmworx, do you have any documentation besides that bug report to back that up?16:19
jmworxayan4m1: basically, modprobe would fail on the hda driver16:20
jmworxbsnider: what other doc do you want?16:20
ayan4m1Yeah, I had a similar issue16:20
ayan4m1What kind of machine?16:20
bsniderjmworx, anything else. forum posts, whatever. it seems difficult to believe16:21
jmworxayan4m1: A Dell PC, but basically any 64-bit machine with an HDA card would be broken16:21
bsniderjmworx, i could try downloading the feisty livecd and testing it here16:21
jmworxbsnider: you'd need to update to the latest Feisty kernel. The original Feisty kernel was fine. If you do that, just try "modprobe snd-hda-intel" and see it fail16:22
ayan4m1jmworx: And downloading the alsa source and compiling it with any one of the patches available on the bug tracker doesn't work?16:22
jmworxayan4m1: If I compiled ALSA myself and installed, it worked fine. And then ubuntu would release another kernel update and it would break and I would have to recompile alsa again. Did that at least 5 times16:23
ayan4m1jmworx: Yeah, unfortunately it seems like the issue has been lingering, or on and off, for quite a while16:24
jmworxBasically, someone carelessly applied a patch to the audio drivers and nobody cared that 64-bit was broken (it worked fine on 32-bit machines)16:24
theBishopwhat changes were made to Intrepid to make the font rendering look so good?16:24
ayan4m1I haven't noticed it since hardy was released, but obviously mileages vary16:24
ayan4m1theBishop: Probably something in the new xorg, if I had to guess16:25

ayan4m1theBishop: I haven't really noticed a major difference though, what are you talking about?16:26
lamalexanyone in here using the newly pushed fglrx package?16:26
bsnidertheBishop, the font problem was a libcairo bug that was fixed a few weeks ago16:26

wtgeetheBishop: You probably have slight subpixel smoothing on....which I would recommend.16:26
ayan4m1lamalex: How recently was it pushed?16:27
jmworxbsnider: 1) This isn't a "little bug". Do you have any idea how many machines have hda cards 2) If they hadn't "fixed" stuff, they wouldn't have broken it (original feisty kernels were fine) 3) it should be easy to just revert that kind of regression16:27
vertexoflifehello, can anyone help with a strange keyboard/mouse problem in intrepid? My keyboard/mouse work on the LiveCD (on now) and grub, but not once I boot up.16:27

vertexoflifedanbh_intrepid: can I do this from the live-cd to affect intrepid already installed? no keyboard works on intrepid once I actually boot up.16:28
jmworxayan4m1, bsnider: that's not what I was talking about. HDA problems in general are on all machines and I couldn't blame ubuntu or any other distro for that. The issue I reported is Ubuntu making a change themselves that caused unresolved symbols in the driver. That meant HDA suddenly got broken for everyone16:28
ayan4m1lamalex: Yeah, I ran an upgrade 20 minutes ago, it seems to work alright but when compiz is running video flickers16:28

MimiWhats funny is if I use the 8.04 kernel, I get wireless but no nvidia (both worked fine before the update) but if I use the newest kernel I get nvidia but no wireless hehe20:18
Frijolie1Everytime I start my OS I have to type "nm-applet&" in a terminal window and then keep it open to maintain an Internet connection20:19

Mimi "Make sure you have the notification area applet in your panel..."20:22
MimiShackJack,  i dont know if you said that regarding Frijolie  or myself. If it was myself, I do have the wicd tray icon on it. It's just the iwl3945 driver isnt loading for some reason20:23

gilstervirtuelv: great stuff. Thanks. What is that?22:00
virtuelvLogicalDash: I couldn't with the 2.6.27-6 kernel which was the only older kernel on my system22:01
LogicalDashWell, yes, it only works if you actually have another kernel22:01
virtuelvgilster: Description: Firmware for Linux kernel drivers22:01

zack__milos, i figured it out i just re arragned the order the resolutions were listed in the xorg.conf23:05

myk_robinsonthen, a later update replaced the firmware23:44
gil_how did they expect people to update if it borked their wireless card?23:44
