natalisushkaHi, does kubuntu have a compiz manager?00:15
=== root is now known as Guest79423
genii!ccsm00:22
ubottuTo enable advanced customization of desktop effects in Ubuntu: install 'compizconfig-settings-manager' or 'simple-ccsm'. If you install the latter, a new option will appear in your appearance properties - See also !compiz - Help in #compiz-fusion00:22
\Kiranatalisushka: you can get compiz for kubuntu and it works fine and has a config window, but its good to have the fusion-icon package aswell00:22

col_panicwhat if I use a different distro?01:52

b0unceI suppose you use kubuntu06:03
Waldo_yeah06:03
b0unceHave you used any other distros?06:03
Waldo_Just added it an hour or so06:03
Waldo_Used plain Ubuntu a bit before that06:04
b0unceYeah I used that ahwile ago06:04
b0unceThe one thing about the untu distros is that they just work06:04
b0unceI actaully taking a break form gentoo right now06:05
b0unceThey need to get some tings together06:05
Waldo_I only downloaded Ubuntu on sunday, actually06:05
Waldo_Which makes me crazy new, I guess06:06
b0unceyeah06:06
b0unceha yeah06:06
b0unceall good though06:06
b0uncewelcome to open source06:06
b0uncelotso free stuff06:06
Waldo_Free is always awesome06:06
Waldo_Doesn't hurt that kubuntu is way nicer to look at than XP, either06:07
b0unceyeah, it'll be faster also06:07
b0unceit's a good nix type to start with06:07
b0unceand go back to in my case06:08
b0uncei guess benefit 1 is xchat is free for linux06:09
Waldo_heh06:09
Waldo_I'm still trying to get used to Konversation06:09
Waldo_I was already nice and used to Pidgin06:10
=== ubuntu__ is now known as Voyager529
Voyager529hey all06:10
thismamacooks200if I run a repeating playlist or a long video in *any* media player, it stops playing and the player eventually stop playing sound at all until I close and restart it. I also have the same problem with audio in firefox. Games also will not make sound if firefox or a media player are opened first.06:10
b0uncehey voyager06:10

Voyager529question, if you've got a moment06:10
Voyager529I want to dual-boot this system06:11
b0uncethis..do you have flashinstalled?06:11
b0unceIf you dual boot do windows 1st06:11
Voyager529I have Windows installed and 13GBytes of unformatted space06:11
b0uncethen nix on top,it's easier06:11
Voyager529when I do the install06:11
b0unceyes06:12
Voyager529that was the plan06:12
b0unceand that enough room06:12
Waldo_I just installed with wubi06:12
Voyager529...enough for Ubuntu and Unreal Tournament 2004 =)06:12
b0uncemake your swap space about 1.5-2 times your RAM06:12
Waldo_But if you've got unformatted space, your way should work better06:12
b0unceVoyager...play that on windoze side06:12

C_PanicI have a few questions about KDE406:17
b0uncethismamacooks..qt-core installed and x11 maybe what you need.06:17
C_Panichow's the backward compatibility for KDE3 apps?06:17
b0unceKDE3 and KDE4 apps are compatib;e06:17

Voyager529b0unce: ...just click install and wait? Windows install will be safe?06:18
C_PanicOK what's this "plasma" I keep hearing about?06:18
b0unceanything that ran on kde3 will run on kde406:18
b0unceplasma is cool06:18
b0unceand if you have a decent lcd will see the effects06:18
C_Panicwhat is it, actually?06:18
C_Panicmy main computer has an excellent monitor06:19
b0unceIt's a collection of display packages for kkde406:19
b0uncethat make apps look prettty nice06:19
C_Paniclike compiz or something?06:19
b0unceI personnaly have it06:19
b0uncesorta yes06:19
C_Panicoh, so it's a skinning thing?06:19
b0uncehas it's own screen savers and windows loos06:19
b0uncelooks06:19
b0uncestuff like that06:20
b0uncemainly a skinning thing06:20
C_PanicI personally bhate the look of Vista06:20
b0unceyeah06:20
Waldo_Vista is kind of gross06:20
C_PanicIt looks like somebody poured a quart of corn syrup over every onscreen element06:20
b0uncevoyager..windows will be safe06:20
Voyager529w00tness06:20
thismamacooks200b0unce: "qt-core" also shows no results either. (as in [X]not installed, [X]installed, [X]upgradable) I must be missing a repository?06:21
C_Panicplasma doesn't look like that, does it?06:21
b0unceyou will have a pre boot option to pick windoze or nix06:21
Waldo_Reminds me of XP with everything overdone06:21
C_PanicI mean, if it does then I don't want it06:21
C_Panicis it an option for KDE4?06:21
b0unceit's just an option, you can configure kde howwver06:22
b0unceu want06:22
C_PanicI read something about KDE4 having a weird way of handling the desktop06:22
C_Paniclike, all the icons are stored in a certain area or something...06:22
b0unceive tried lots and i like kde06:22
C_Panicand you can't just click on them to open the apps06:23
b0unceqt-core if not there won't run much media06:23
b0unceforgive me as I havent ran ubuntu/k in awhile06:23
thismamacooks200all the icons are stored in a certain area? that's insane. the proper way to do things is spread them all other the whole file system06:23
b0unceyou can get rid of that06:23
C_Panicthey're sort of coralled to a certain space on the desktop or something06:23
C_Panicor so I have read06:23
b0unceand move them to only show at your "bar" when open06:24
b0unceno they are lots of places06:24
b0uncethey are in your filesystem amager06:24
C_PanicI wonder what this reviewer was talking about06:24
b0uncemanager06:24
C_PanicI mean on the desktop06:24
b0unceall linux has "basically" the same file system06:24
thismamacooks200b0unce: so I don't need qt-core?06:25
b0unceright06:25
C_PanicKDE4 introduces a different way of dealing with desktop shortcuts06:25
b0unceyou do need qt-core06:25
C_Panic...supposedly, according to this reviewer06:25
b0uncekde4 has alot of possibilies06:25
thismamacooks200b0unce: apt-get reports "E: Couldn't find package qt-core". so has qt-core been renamed?06:27
b0uncealso thismamacooks..make sure you have the most updated x-11 apps, but ubuntu I think is pretty good about that06:27
b0unceit may not be in the ubuntu repository06:27
b0unceunfortunately06:27
C_PanicI'm considering upgrading to the KDE4 version of Hardy06:27
C_PanicDamn, this repartitioning process takes a long-ass time06:28
stuartHey guys, I am a complete noob how do you change your default browser I've just clicked on a link with and its opened konquere instead of ff306:29
b0uncethismamacooks...it sounds more like an x11 problem now that I thin about it06:29
b0uncecan't remember06:29
Waldo_dunno stuart, but I'm here wondering the same thing06:29
b0unceff3 has an option in its advanced settings actaully06:29
thismamacooks200It seems I have x11 version 7.306:30
Waldo_b0unce, you mean the default browser option?06:33
b0unceyes06:33
Waldo_it's already set as default06:33
b0uncedoes it act like default06:34
Waldo_Yeah, but IRC links still open in konqueror06:34
Waldo_think I might have it06:34
Waldo_Fixed!06:35
b0uncecool06:35
Waldo_Found an option in the main system settings06:35
b0unceYeah certain things will go to konq if your a KDE user06:35
b0unceI forgot why06:35
Waldo_Nothing like an opinionated operating system lol06:36
C_Panic"opinionated" LOL06:39
thismamacooks200optionated maybe06:40
Waldo_I should get some HAL 9000 sound clips for system sounds06:40
C_PanicI used to have lots of movie and TV computer sounds on my system06:40
Waldo_My XP is all Star Trek computer sounds right now06:41
C_Panicfor error messages, I had Linguo the Grammar Robot from The Simpsons, yelling "ERROR! ERROR!"06:41
Waldo_Before that it was Star Wars sounds06:41
Waldo_My Mac remains resolutely silent06:42
C_PanicI also had the computer from Wargames saying "Would you like to play a game?"06:42
Waldo_nice06:42
C_PanicAll the nodes onmy home network are now named after fictional computers from books, movies and TV06:42
C_Panicthis machine is called "Gibson"06:43
C_Panicmy fileserver is called Wintermute06:43
C_Panicmy WiFi network SSID is Skynet06:43
Waldo_All of mine are named "Spiffy (computer type)", but since they all basically pretend the others don't exist it's wasted06:43
thismamacooks200well, I need to sleep now06:44
Waldo_night06:44
C_Panicmy laptops are called V-Ger, SCMODS and FUCKUP (a computer from Robert Anton Wilson's Illuminatus Trilogy)06:44
C_PanicI need a name for my networked printer06:45
C_PanicMy next laptop is going to be called Bambleweeny5706:46
Waldo_Maybe kubuntu and my Mac will actually see each other on the network06:48
stuartSorry guys I'm in the process of getting ready for work so I got one last question you know 8.10 is coming out will I need to reinstall the whole os06:48
Waldo_dunno, but I found the answer to your web browser question06:48

ocs if you dont mind writing connection scripts yourself = ?15:44

geniiocs: The usb modems often accept same set of standard Hayes modem commands. So you would use something like Expect to write a small script which perhaps dials out and then enters name and password once connected. Etc15:45
ocsgenii: i know that (i used serial modems) . this is not my problem. the question is finding an USB modem which is compatible without problem on kubuntu15:47

NickPrestaShadow_, in your opinion, of course. KDE 4.1 is still an earlier version of KDE4. If you're going to wait for KDE4 to be as super stable and feature filled as KDE 3.5.10, you might as well wait a couple years. ;)18:52

NickPrestaShadow_, well, you don't _have_ to upgrade to Ibex. Hardy with KDE3 still works.18:54
dwidmannShadow_: from the ubuntu perspective, I reckon doing it now gives them more time to get everything "right" before the next LTS release.18:54
Shadow_yes by that way it is a right movement dwidmann18:55
Shadow_just talking about Intrepid NickPresta that there should have the choice...i dont think that 3.5.10 is the perfect manager18:56
Shadow_sure there must be updates and upgrades18:56
NickPrestaShadow_, well, the rationale is that KDE3 is obsolete and is largely unmaintained. It would've given no advantage over Hardy, https://wiki.kubuntu.org/KubuntuIntrepidVersion18:56
dwidmannShadow_: more choices = more work = more manpower required18:56
NickPrestaShadow_, have you actually used KDE4 yet or are you just worried because of what you've heard?18:57

dwidmannblip-: Your call. Either way will work well. Qsynaptics is much more robust but apparently had issues. touchfreeze is pretty basic and doesn't do so well on powertop, but it's drop-dead simple (you'll have to change some settings yourself in xorg.conf this route though, like the pointer acceleration/speed, tapping, and such)21:27
noam_aleksive: if you mean ndiswrapper and it works for that card (i personally don't know ndiswrapper), then this might be an easy way to go21:27

ekarrrghhh: Actually, it would completely break my X sessions.23:20
l3r1k:)23:20
arrrghhhek, how long ago?  since "unbreakable" x it's supposed to default back to the vesa driver so X never actually breaks completely.23:20

arrrghhhwhat does it do?  i looked at it and knew it had nothing to do with video but i don't know what it does...23:32

arrrghhhUnless you're really security conscious you can skip this step because it only overwrites any non-encrypted old data that might be sitting on the partition.23:33
l3r1kI'm glad i did dd --help as opposed to just running it when I saw you mention it.23:34
