J-_in /etc/network/interfaces would network and gateeway be the same IP?06:46
tonyyarussono06:50
tonyyarussoA gateway has a host address, which is very different from a network address.06:51
tonyyarussoIt's quite common for the gateway to be one higher than the network address, although there's no reason it has to be.06:51
J-_Is there anyway to find out my network and gateway with a command?06:59
=== Adri2000_ is now known as Adri2000
J-_Would network in /etc/network/interfaces be the address of my router?07:08
tonyyarussoJ-_: No, the address of the router is the gateway address.  The network address has to do with how it's subnetted, if it is.07:24
tonyyarussoIf you can give actual numbers I can help.  You're looking for things that are set within your router's configuration, ultimately.07:24
J-_Yeah, I think I figured that part out :) Now I'm just looking for my afraid.org DNS entries on their site.07:29
J-_Will /etc/resolv.conf be a new file once I use nano to go into it on a new installation? It just created a new file.07:37
tonyyarussoit will if you save07:38
J-_Okay, it didn't say anything about creating a new file in the configuration tutorial.07:39
J-_Now, to see if this thing works.07:46

sorenJ-_: No.08:47
sorenJ-_: You need numeric adresses for nameserver.08:48
sorens08:48
sorenJ-_: Nameservers are what you use to resolve hostnames to IP's, so specifying names would be a catch-22.08:48
J-_Does /etc/network/interfaces look alright, though?08:49
J-_Or, should I have gateway instead of network?08:49
sorenJ-_: It's a valid /etc/network/interfaces file.08:50
sorenJ-_: That's about all I can say.08:50
sorenJ-_: The numbers depend on your local configuration. It looks sane, but I can't say if it's correct.08:50
J-_okay08:51

Dibdon't worry I think I found something lol good on help.ubuntu ^_^15:42
hyljeDib: does your apache config include the php config snippet?15:42
ScottKThere is a but in the Intrepid Postfix package where a couple the man pages for some new scripts didn't make it into the binary.15:42
Dibhylje, I had a quick look but dident see any PHP related things15:42
kirklandScottK: hmm15:43
ScottKkirkland: They're in the Postfix source package.  Could we add them to your repository so I can at least point to them in a bug?15:43
hyljewell that may well be the problem :)15:43
kirklandScottK: that server just mounts up a full Ubuntu mirror15:43
Diblol yeah I restarted Apache and then it worked heheh15:44
ScottKkirkland: Source and binary?15:44

Dibcan i use atp-get to install GDLib?15:45
ScottKkirkland: If you've got an idea how you might do it it'd be nice.  Otherwise I think I'm reduced to blogging man pages or something.15:45
ScottKkirkland: You can guilt lamont into doing since it's his bug.15:46
lamontScottK: more likely he could guilt me into uploading postfix. :)15:46
kirklandScottK: actually....15:46
ScottKlamont: I don't think the release team is going to take 'missing a couple of man pages' as an RC bug.15:46
lamontmeh15:47
kirklandScottK: as soon as the Jaunty archive opens, there will be a Jaunty section in manpages.ubuntu.com15:47

lamontjust have to know where their ticklish spots are15:47
ScottKlamont: If you can convince them it'd be much appreciated.15:47
kirklandScottK: if you sync the postfix package there, the pages will be available, albeit against a different version15:47
ScottKkirkland: True.15:47
ScottKWe'll see.  I'll hope lamont can find the right leverage on -release for now.15:48
nomoahi, is there a netboot image for ubuntu server 8.04?16:06

uvirtbotLaunchpad bug 274365 in tomcat6 "Installation over Sun JVM might fail if JVM is not yet configured" [Low,Fix released] https://launchpad.net/bugs/27436516:37

mathiazKoon: It supposed to be fixed...16:39
Koonargh.16:39
mathiazKoon: let me investigate that16:39
Koonit's the tomcat6-(something) packages that call restart16:39
Koonthey don't have an || true16:39
mathiazKoon: correct16:40
KoonI forgot those. and the same is true for tomcat5.5.16:41
* Koon grumbles16:41
mathiazKoon: could this be bug 264489?16:41

Koonmathiaz: yes -- could you check why it failed to start in the forst place ?16:44

mathiazKoon: same issue as bug 27436516:44
uvirtbotLaunchpad bug 274365 in tomcat6 "Installation over Sun JVM might fail if JVM is not yet configured" [Low,Fix released] https://launchpad.net/bugs/27436516:44
Koonyou said you weren't using sun jvm ?16:45
mathiazKoon: default-jre-headless is setup before tomcat6-*16:45
mathiazKoon: but openjdk-6-jre-headless is setup after tomcat6-*16:45
mathiazKoon: first and last line of http://paste.ubuntu.com/61563/16:45
Koonmathiaz: it used to work without openjdk-6-jre-headless being configured16:46
Koonanyway, the workaround I put in is insufficient and should be fixed. In progress16:47
mathiazKoon: using || true in the postinst is not enough?16:48
KoonI mean, putting it only on tomcat6.postinst ins not enough16:48
Koonhhhhmmm16:49
mathiazKoon: ah ok - so you'll prepare a diff that will make -admin and -examples use || true?16:49
Koonthat was my plan. Though I just discovered they shouldn't need to... Their postinst call "status" to doublecheck tomcat6 is really running16:50
Koonjust a sec16:50
Dibwhats a good small desktop enviroment for ubuntu-server?16:52
Eeyore-Jre1716:53
mathiaz!servergui | Dib16:53

mathiazKoon: it seems that a new bug should be filed17:09
Koonthe same that got the release freeze exception17:09
Koon(or the old one reopened ?)17:09
mathiazKoon: well - AFAICT it's a new bug17:10
Koonyes, will file a status returncode bug17:11
mathiazKoon: related to bug 274365 though, but affecting other packages17:11
uvirtbotLaunchpad bug 274365 in tomcat6 "Installation over Sun JVM might fail if JVM is not yet configured" [Low,Fix released] https://launchpad.net/bugs/27436517:11
* Koon curses his VM that choose the wrong day to freeze17:11
Koonmathiaz: the debdiff worksforme. invoke-rc.d is a little noisy when status returns nonzero though, in the future I should probably change those calls as well, but that's a more intrusive change that we'll do after release, I suppose17:26
mathiazKoon: hm - you've changed the exit code from 1 to 3.17:27
mathiazKoon: hm - scratch that17:28

uvirtbotLaunchpad bug 236640 in open-iscsi "iSCSI install fails under hardy" [Undecided,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/23664019:05
J-_thefish:  I think I have a general idea... If it messes up, or if I need to reconfigure it for some reason I don't think I could do it since I need to do things a few times before remembering/ troubleshooting. This is probably my 3rd or 4th time doing it within 3 or so years.19:05
mathiaznijaba: what was the support of iscsi in hardy?19:06
nijabamathiaz: good, except for booting from it19:06
kirklandmathiaz: of course i have, note who it's assigned to19:06
mathiazkirkland: hm - ok :D19:07
nijabamathiaz: we still have an issue in some condition, ask kirkland/etienneG about it19:07
mathiazkirkland: I've just received the email and thus got on my radar...19:07
mathiaznijaba: right - that's the issue with init script19:07
mathiazthis is one is related to the installer19:07
* nijaba goes cooking for his family, back later19:08
J-_hrm, I wonder if I can disable something in my bios on the server so I don't have the keyboard and mouse hanging around. I mean, I suppose those are the arms if it's a headless server.19:08
* J-_ palms19:08
J-_I liked how hardy asked what things to install--including lamp, CUPS, and openssh.19:12
J-_That's what I enabled anyway.19:12
J-_Oh yes, and how it asked to create a mysql password too.19:14
J-_I don't remember dapper asking me all of those things, though, I could be totally wrong :)19:14
Ridehhi i'm having trouble getting openldap to work on hardy, i've followed 4 differnt guides, multiple trouble shooting recommendations, reinstalled 4 or 5 times on 2 machines.  Has anyone recently gotten it working - if so do you have a link to a resource ?19:14
sommerRideh: I have: https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/serverguide/C/openldap-server.html19:15
jpughrideh: what kind of problems are you having? I have used the serverguide and am having no problems myself19:16
Ridehi've had a few differnt problems one was related to the SSO guide which apparently wasnt complete anywyas19:17
Ridehi dont have a log of all the error messages i've recieved19:17
Ridehi've worked through fixing ones related to hostnames, and bind19:17
Ridehbut it seemed like ssl issues or tls issues kept gumming everything up19:18
Ridehi've purged openldap and i'm going to try again. i'll let you know what happens here in about 8 minutes19:18
sommerRideh: it's probably better to get things working without ssl and tls, then go back and add them so you're only fighting one set of problems19:18
Ridehagreed which i've tried to do as well19:19
J-_What type of client should I use to update IPs that works with afraid.org? Not sure what I used before. I remember going through a couple programs a year or so ago.19:19
J-_not sure if I used ddclient or not.19:19
Ridehsommer: give me a few moments and i'll see what happens this go around19:19
sommerRideh: sure, just ask when you have specific questions :)19:20
Ridehsure which is why i asked for a resource :)19:20
Ridehi dont mind rtfm as long as it gets me somewhere in the end lol  its been driving me up the wall19:20
Ridehand of course it works19:30
Ridehsigh19:31
Ridehlitterally spent 3 days off and on trying to make this work right... no idea. thats terrible.    least all the rest of the services minus nfs are up and running19:31
sommerparty!19:32
ScottKI'd like to suggest that those of you who have blogs on planet might want to start doing 'cool new stuff' postings now to help build interest in the release.19:33
tonyyarussoSpeaking of release, is there a summary separate from the general release notes of things that are new in Intrepid specific to server usage?19:34
J-_What dynamic IP DNS client works with afraid.org? Not sure if I used ddclient, or not.19:34
tonyyarusso(I'm going to be setting up a new server soon, and need to decide whether to use 8.04 or 8.10)19:34
tonyyarussoJ-_: inadyn claims to19:35
J-_hmm nice.19:35
Ridehtonyyarusso: i went with 8.04 for production environment19:35
Ridehi'm in the same boat19:35
ScottKI only have a small number of servers and so I tend to track the latest release.19:36
tonyyarussoI think so far the only thing that looks interesting is the encrypted private directory, but I'm guessing there's more.19:36
ScottKUpgrade from Hardy to Intrepid was totally painless on my test server.19:36
Ridehmy comfort level is still relatively low which lead me to go with somethign with more existing support documented (although i doubt there is significant change)19:36
J-_Glad I've installed Hardy, newer packages than Dapper and, it's probably a lot better since it's a newer LTS system, let alone the evolved stated from dapper to hardy. :D19:40
J-_Now I don't have stagnant programs looming around19:40
Ridehsommer: ty for the help19:41
Ridehoff to whats next :)19:41
sommerRideh: np19:43
J-_Does anyone use afraid.org here? I'm trying to get a cron working to update my DNS regularly, I came across a script and it says they're using, "echo '*/5 * * * * root /usr/bin/wget http://freedns.afraid.org/dynamic/index.php?action=script&data_id=XXXXX" But, where the XXXXX's are they said, "NOTE: In the above, the XXXXXX is an id number provided by freedns.afraid.org" I'm not sure what they mean on ID number. Anyone know what they're g20:02
J-_oing on about?20:02
tonyyarussoI would assume that must be something connected to your account and available from the web site...  Haven't seen it myself, but I'd go poking around the web interface for it.20:05
J-_tonyyarusso:  am trying.. :P20:08
J-_hmm, what's the command to make a new cronjob? cronjob -d?20:16
J-_hmm20:16
J-_ah hah! sudo crontab -e20:17
J-_would echo '*/5 * * * * be every 5 minutes?20:20
J-_Bah, yes it is. Answering my own questions. lol20:20
ScottKSo are you the cron job then?20:22
J-_didn't work for some reason20:23
ScottKThen I guess not.20:24
nijabaScottK: would you recommend interfacing postfix directly with clamav or through amavisd-new?20:28
nijabaScottK: never mind if you answered to slangacek in #ubuntu-release20:30
pltmnkyhowdy :)20:34
pltmnkyquestion: (ubuntu 8.04) i have a print server, and a client machine. there are already pre-exisint ldap and kerberos setup (they work as expected).  I set up cups 1.3 on both, and the client machine recives the printerlist from the print server, and print over IPP.  What I am trying to do is, have cups verify that the user printing is authenticated, and so that no local users can print without authentication.  (I have set this up to work from 20:40
ScottKnijaba: I answered him, but for here: The recommended way for Postfix is through amavisd-new20:43
ScottKYou can do it other ways.20:43
* lamont notes that if ScottK called it "postfi x', then it wouldn't blue-tab lamont20:44
lamont:-)20:44
lamonthi SchneeSchwarz20:44
lamontmeh.  Hi ScottK20:44
* ScottK notes that if lamont doesn't want to get alerted whenever someone says postfix, lamont could arrange that.20:45
lamontesp since ScottK does such a good job of answering them in his place, making it even easier. :-)20:46
* ScottK ponders making his nick postfix.20:47
* lamont ponders kickbanning ScottK just for giggles20:48
* lamont decides that might be overkill20:48
tonyyarussoSpeaking of printing, I've never quite understood this - if you have a printer hooked up to a print server which is in turn on the network, why do the other client machines also need to have the printer driver?20:49
Rideh__because the print server isnt actually decoding the document, its just taking the data stream to the printer20:49
tonyyarussoOh, I guess that makes sense.20:50
tonyyarussoWould there be a way to make it do so, so you didn't have to worry about the clients?20:50
PizarroHi, I have installed poptp VPN server under Linux and everything works fine except the VPN connection only lasts a few seconds and then it disconnects, please I really need help. Thanks20:57
PizarroWhile the VPN connection is established, I can ping other machines, etc.. but whatever is the reason when I do this (when some data is transfered between the cleint and the server) it just disconnects20:57
J-_Can anyone help me get a cronjob working with afraid.org services to update my IP/ DNS?20:59
PizarroI just want to install a successfull VPN server under UBuntu, and it seems to be a nightmare21:01
Rideh__is kickstart still the recommended tool to use for creating preconfigured installs?21:12
andolRideh__: Kickstart sounds more like Redhat/CentOS. How about taking a look at preseeds?21:26
Rideh__andol: righton i'll look into that21:27
Rideh__https://help.ubuntu.com/community/KickstartCompatibility was the ony documentation i was finding but looked old21:27
Rideh__https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PXEInstallServer also referenced kickstartr21:27
andolRideh__: Well, here is one preseeds https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/installation-guide/amd64/preseed-using.html21:28
andol(Yes, preseeds works well from a pxe-boots)21:28
Rideh__righton i'll look into it21:29
andolThe nice thing about preseeds is the natural integration with the debian-installer and debconf.21:29
andolJust remember you might have to modify the example somewhat. From what I can see it is more or less taken directoy from Lenny, which doesn't behave excatly the same way as Hardy.21:31
uvirtbotNew bug: #288349 in php5 (main) "php5 crashed with SIGSEGV in clone()" [Undecided,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/28834921:36
Rideh__andol: i guess my question is taking this a step further21:40
Rideh__andol: i am wanting a computer lab setup so if a machine goes down they can pxe boot and get a fresh install to replace it21:40
Rideh__the computer lab has ldap authentication, nfs shares etc. can all those config files be preseeded?21:41
andolRideh__: Hmm, possibly. But if nothing else you can always tell preseed to run scripts post-install. That script should be able to take care of things for you.21:43
Rideh__true21:43
Rideh__i guess my other option21:43
Rideh__is to create an image of what i want then make pxe just host that image21:43
Rideh__still needing scripts to modify hostnames and such though :/21:44
andolRideh__: Myself I'm considering a solution combining kickstart and preseeds with puppet.21:44
andolRideh__: Well, do you really need to hostcode hostnames? Just let dhcp handle those settings?21:46
andols/hostcode/hardcode/21:46
Rideh__i'm not familar with that21:46
Rideh__and no not particuarily21:46
Rideh__mind if i pm you?21:48

mathiazkirkland: you don't think bug 288226 warrants a SRU?22:55
uvirtbotLaunchpad bug 288226 in drbd8 "DRBD 8.0.11 is unusably slow" [Undecided,Fix released] https://launchpad.net/bugs/28822622:55
kirklandmathiaz: i didn't look at it closely;  what i did see was some people getting fussy about zul's response, and a request for the appropriate policy documentation22:57
kirklandmathiaz: i merely pasted the URL of the backports process22:57
mathiazkirkland: ah ok. From the changelog it looks like 8.0.13 are bugfixes only.22:58
mathiazkirkland: since it seems we have a severe performance regression it may worth looking into a SRU.22:58
kirklandmathiaz: fair enough;  i'm not establishing an opinion on that one at present22:58
kirklandmathiaz: i actually don't have any idea what drdb is22:59
mathiazkirkland: ok22:59
