Lunar_LampI have just two tv-aerial points in my house.  Both of which are in rooms where I do not want a loud backend mythtv box running.  So, I can try and build a nice quiet combined back/front end box, but I'm left wondering - is it possible to build a very minimal machine that has just the tvcard and minimal spec (thus quiet) that then offloads it's work to a power-house backend over the network?12:25
Lunar_LampIt would seem that I can use multiple backends happily, but I want to know if there are any minimum specs for the minimal-backend I want as it would be the only one with a TVcard.12:27
giverhello14:08
giverI'm trying to install mythbuntu, and installation finishes, but freeze at restart14:09
givercan anybody help?14:09
ronny__Hi all, I just installed Mythbuntu-8.04 on a offline system (no Internet, just TV) with a Hauppauge WinTV PVR 350. Everything looks fine but I just can not switch channels!!?? I googled a bit but all I tried failed here. Is there a way to find and fix the problem?14:15
oobeLunar_Lamp, i would post this question in a forum cause there are many different answers that are in fact correct but also just a matter of opinion14:19
oobei dont see any reason why you can do that depending on what you consider minimal14:19
oobedo you want to playback hdtv14:20
oobewill the network be wired or unwired? why dont you try installing a new aerial socket ( its actually cheaper and easier than building and maintaining a backend)14:21
giveranyone have any idea why this pc cant restart from mythbuntu install or from live cd?14:21
oobegiver you could try acpioff14:21
givernew in this,to tell the truth14:22
giverwhere can I read about acpioff14:22
oobetry running the cd boot options14:22
oobeand select noapic14:22
oobeforget i said acpioff that was a mistake14:22
givernoapic14:22
oobealso just try the basic install14:23
giveris some option in the splash screen?14:23
oobebefore the splash screen14:23
oobethe are options to edit its boot paremeter14:23
giverit only show the pc slash screen, then boot into mythbuntu spash screen14:24
giverhave some selections14:24
giverbut don;t see anything related to noapic14:24
oobeyou can type it in manually14:25
giverhumm, trying to understand, there is no console to write into,14:25
giveronlt start with selecting language14:25
giverthen timezone14:25
giverthen spalsh screen with selections14:26
giverno prompt14:26
giverthis is mythbuntu 8.04114:26
giverinto an amd64 machine14:26
oobegiver this thread should help you http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=59144314:26
giverok,I'll read it14:27
giverok,that's something to try14:29
giverwhile I don;t have a black screen14:29
giverI do have on board video14:29
oobeyeah sorry i though the thread was refering to booting the cd14:30
oobebut its talking about an installed system14:30
oobeanyway when you boot the cd it should let you press F6 key or F5 im going off memory14:31
oobeto edit the boot options14:31
oobedont remove anything just add noapic to the end14:31
giverok,still can't see the boot options14:32
giverlet me get there14:32
giverI do see safe graphics mode,selected14:33
giverthen went to other options (F6)14:33
giverthen it booted the cd14:33
giverdidn;t give me time to see boot options14:33
giverthe main problem I see is that like now,I try to restart to go again to those options, but shut down and restart only freeze at the slapsh screen14:35
giverit never restart or shut down14:35
giverhave to remove the power to start again14:35
giverwhich is actually the main problem I have14:35
giverI can install mythbuntu no problems, goes all the way to the end14:36
giverbut won;t restart14:36
givermaybe this is disabled in bios?14:36
giveris there any setting in bios to stop the shutdown?14:36
giverok,trying the noapic option14:55
giveris at 95% of the install14:55
giverI suspect the same thing will happen and won;t restart14:55
oobei think it may be installing fine but you cant boot it properly until you edit you grub options15:00
oobepress the esc key when you boot it for the first time then edit your boot options15:01
giverwell, the next time I start the live cd,I go to terminal and cfdisk show me no partitions, only the large hard drive15:01
giverlike nothing was written to it15:01
oobeoh15:01
giverbut15:01
oobei dont know then15:01
giverif I don;t restart after the install,I can go to cfdisk and see the swap and boot parition15:02
oobeyou can always install xubuntu the sudo apt-get install mythbuntu-desktop15:02
giverthis is without restart it15:02
giverI should check the bios,I guess, maybe something preventing the restart15:02
giverbut is all chinise15:02
giverchinese15:02
oobewow15:03
givercan't find a combo to get into bios15:03
giverhas some kind of pass15:03
giveronly went there once15:03
oobeyou might want to restet the cmos using the jumper15:03
giverand all seemed norma;15:03
giverI should,yes15:03
tgm4883_laptop!diggit16:28
ZinnHave you dugg it?  http://digg.com/linux_unix/Mythbuntu_8_10_RC_Released16:28
videorechnerhi how can I check if there is a mysql database on my system?16:47
videorechnerhi i had to reboot but still: how can I see whether a mysql database is up?17:06
giverhumm, downloaded unbuntu and this one does restar, still, don;t boot from the hard drive, nothing was written, drive has no partitions17:06
giverinstallation went through ok17:07
giverbut no OS is into the hard drive17:08
giveralways ask for the cd to boot17:09
videorechnermaybe its a grub related problem?17:09
rhpot1991videorechner: dpkg -l mysql-server |grep ^ii17:09
videorechnerrhpot thx17:10
rhpot1991dpkg -l mythtv-database |grep ^ii17:10
rhpot1991is useful as well17:10
givermy question is,grub is not installed,in fact,nothing is written,how could I fix something that's not written?17:10
giverok, now gives me the option to keep using live cd17:11
rhpot1991giver: do you have any other hard drives on the system or usb devices or anything?17:11
giverno17:11
giveronly the sata hard drive17:11
givera 60 gb seagate17:11
rhpot1991you actually went through the install process and not just into the live cd?17:11
giverwell,I booted from the live dc17:12
givercd17:12
giverthen went through all the installation17:12
rhpot1991boot back to the live cd and check the HD to see if there are files on it17:12
videorechnerhttp://pastebin.com/m413e673d does this mean there is database I can use for mythtv?17:12
giverwent throguh without problems, ask me to restart to use the new installation,or keep in live cd17:12
giverthat's what i said,the hard drive doesn't boot17:13
rhpot1991videorechner: well it means the packages are installed, in theory they may not have been able to configure if you didn't give it a good password when they asked for one17:13
giverlike there was nothing written to it17:13
rhpot1991here is what we can do, go look in /etc/mysql.txt17:13
rhpot1991wait let me check that17:13
giverhow to check the tree structure ?17:13
giverusing terminal?17:13
rhpot1991/etc/mythtv/mysql.txt17:13
* rhpot1991 thought it didn't look right17:13
rhpot1991get the password from there17:13
giverfirst time using ubuntu17:13
rhpot1991then do mysql -umythtv -p mythconverg17:14
giversorry for all the newbie questions17:14
rhpot1991and supply that password when it asks17:14
rhpot1991giver: it should throw an icon for the drive on the desktop or in the places menu17:14
rhpot1991you should be able to just browse it there17:14
giverI did all that17:14
giverI can browse through the drive now17:15
rhpot1991is there anything on it?17:15
giveryes17:15
giveri'm in /boot.grob folder17:15
giverpff17:15
giverin /boot/grub17:15
rhpot1991there are other things though like an /etc /var /usr and so on?17:16
giverlet me check17:16
giveryep,var,usr17:16
givertmp17:16
giverseem is all there,but I'm afraid I will loose if I restart17:17
videorechnerI did as tol, and this is what I get back:http://pastebin.com/m6ff0d35817:17
giverit seem to see the 6.3 gb partition made at installation17:17
rhpot1991videorechner: sounds like you didn't tell it the mysql root password when it asked, do you know what it is?17:18
giverthe rest of the hard drive is not mounted17:18
rhpot1991giver: so what exactly happens when you restart?17:18
giverwill I loos the OS again if I restart?17:18
givernothing,pc comes back to original state17:19
giverthat's what happen17:19
rhpot1991define original state17:19
giverwell,hard drive not partitioned,no booting from hdd17:19
videorechnerrhpot1991 I know all passwords on this pc, but it never asked for a root password except when I used sudo17:19
giveronly asking to boot from cd17:19
rhpot1991videorechner: well lets do this then17:19
rhpot1991videorechner: sudo dpkg-reconfigure mysql-server17:20
giverand then,when I do,cfdisk finds the hard drive empty17:20
rhpot1991and set a password when it asks you17:20
videorechnerit didnt ask for a password17:20
videorechnerall I get is an empty command line17:20
giverI wonder why the hard drive doesn't keep the OS? I wouldn;t think I need the cd after the installation,right?17:21
giveris not needed,correct?17:21
rhpot1991giver: sounds like grub isn't pointing to the right place17:22
giverhow to correct that17:22
rhpot1991do you even get any grub error or anything?17:22
givernope17:22
rhpot1991did you take the cd out?17:22
giverno17:22
giveris working off the cd yet17:22
giverI didn;t restart since installation finished17:22
giverlast time I restarted, the pc went back to an empty drive, and asks to boot from cd17:23
giverI did check bios17:23
giverand is set to boot from hdd as first option17:24
rhpot1991take the cd out and reboot17:24
rhpot1991like it says17:24
giverok17:24
rhpot1991videorechner: can you do mysql -uroot -p17:24
videorechnerasks for the password but denies for user root17:25
tgm4883_laptopwhat about just "mysql -u root"17:25
givernope, keeps asking to boot from cd17:25
rhpot1991videorechner: leave the -p off and try17:25
giverall is lost again17:25
tgm4883_laptopgiver, how many hard drives do you have?17:26
rhpot1991giver: is your bios configured to boot from HD?17:26
giveronly one17:26
giveryes17:26
videorechneraccess denied17:26
giverbios is set to boot from hddd17:26
rhpot1991videorechner: try sudo dpkg-reconfigure mysql-server-5.017:26
giverone think I noticed,at the end in the summary ,there is an advance option setting boot to hd017:27
giverI tried setting it to sda117:27
giverbut same thing17:27
videorechnerok mysql got a new root password by now17:27
givernot sure is important17:27
videorechnerwhat shall I do next?17:28
giverit is puzzling me,because nor ubuntu nor muthbuntu installs at all17:28
rhpot1991ok good, now do sudo dpkg-reconfigure mythtv-database17:28
rhpot1991and tell it root and that password when it asks17:28
tgm4883_laptopgiver, which disk are you using?17:28
giverseagate 60 gb17:28
giverlaptor ones17:29
tgm4883_laptopno, which mythbuntu disk17:29
giverlaptop17:29
giverohh17:29
giverlatest stable17:29
giver8.04117:29
giversame for ubuntu17:29
videorechnerit asks where I the mysql server is hosted17:29
videorechnershall I keep localhost?17:29
tgm4883_laptopyes17:30
rhpot1991videorechner: yep17:31
giverI have seen some network manager error at the end,but they go away so fast,I can't read them well17:31
giverdoes the network need to be connected?17:31
videorechnerI wont be using other computers running mythtv but should I enable remote connectivity to avoid probable errors?17:31
rhpot1991videorechner: not if you wont be using others, you can always enable this in MCC later17:32
videorechnerok done, whats next?17:32
rhpot1991should be good now17:32
rhpot1991try to connect17:33
videorechnerhow?17:33
videorechnerjust start mythtv frontend17:33
videorechner?17:33
rhpot1991do the backend setup first, they both need the info17:33
giverthe cd has an option to boot from fisrt hdd,and it doesn't boot17:34
videorechnershall I use root as username and its password?17:34
giverI tried the install directly from the cd,and also from inside live cd17:34
rhpot1991videorechner: use mythtv and the password in /etc/mythtv/mysql.txt17:34
givernone of them write anything to the hard drive17:35
videorechnercannot login to database17:35
rhpot1991have you checked that file, it should have updated the password17:36
rhpot1991so it wont be the same as the last time17:36
givermaybe I have to change the hard drive?17:36
videorechnerdefinately my fault I changed the password by myself17:36
videorechner/etc/mythtv/mysql.txt17:37
givernot sure what to do17:38
givernever found a hard drive that don't write17:38
videorechnerso I need to do dpkg -reconfigure mythtv-database again and then have a look at /etc/mythtv/mysql.txt and use this password for the backend setup?17:39
rhpot1991videorechner: did you modify mysql.txt you are saying?17:39
videorechneryes i did17:39
rhpot1991that stores the mythtv user's password not the mysql root's17:39
videorechnerat the backend setup i tried to login as mythtv using the password i had written into mysql.txt but it didnt work17:40
giverthis must be a bad drive,I will see if I can get a new one17:41
rhpot1991videorechner: well you can either modify the mysql user's password to match or just reconfigure mythtv-database again, tell it your root user like you did before but this time don't touch that file17:41
rhpot1991then tell the setup exactly what is in that file17:41
videorechnerkk17:41
givertell me,how to check the hard drive in ubuntu?17:41
rhpot1991ya cause setting it in that file doesn't change it in the database, so they don't match now17:41
rhpot1991videorechner: I gotta run, good luck17:41
videorechnerthx17:42
givercan I check dish in ubuntu?17:43
giverdisk17:43
tgm4883_laptopgiver, you can mount the disk and see if there is stuff on there, from the live disk17:45
giverdoes it make a difference if this drive is an oem unit? do they lock it up to be used only in their units?17:45
tgm4883_laptopdoesn't matter17:46
giverit shouldn;t matter,right?17:46
giverok,let me boot again17:46
tgm4883_laptopright, shouldn't  matter17:46
giverI can mount it from terminal,right?17:46
tgm4883_laptopyes17:47
giverok, give me asec until it boots17:47
videorechnergrml I had to reboot and forgot the command rhpot1991 told me to reconfigure mysql can someone please post it again?17:47
giverdpkg -reconfigure mythtv-database17:48
tgm4883_laptop<rhpot1991> videorechner: well you can either modify the mysql user's password to match or just reconfigure mythtv-database again, tell it your root user like you did before but this time don't touch that file17:48
giveris this the one?17:48
videorechneryes thanks!!17:49
giverok,I'm in terinal now17:49
giverterminal17:49
giverhow to mount the drive?17:49
giversorry,if you guys think I should read more,I will17:50
tgm4883_laptopyou need to make a dir for it first17:50
tgm4883_laptopmkdir ~/drv17:50
tgm4883_laptopthen17:50
tgm4883_laptopsudo mount /dev/sda1 ~/drv17:51
tgm4883_laptopthat might work17:51
giverok17:51
tgm4883_laptopnot sure if we need to specify other options17:51
videorechnerthis command should have changed the password at /etc/mythtv/mysql.txt right?17:51
tgm4883_laptopvideorechner, no, that should have changed it for the db17:52
giverhumm,must specify file system type17:52
tgm4883_laptopI believe you also need to reconfigure mythtv-common17:53
videorechneri do the same with common17:53
tgm4883_laptopsudo mount -t ext3 /dev/sda1 ~/drv17:53
tgm4883_laptopgiver, ^17:53
giverwhere is /drv folder located now? in tmp?17:54
tgm4883_laptopno, in your home dir17:54
videorechnerdoes /etc/mythtv/mysql.txt store the informations used to access the database or is it a database config file telling the database which password is used by which user?17:55
giverdev/sda1 doesn;t exist17:56
givertried sda and says wronf fs type17:56
giverbad superblock on /dev/sda17:56
givermissing codepacge or helper program17:57
tgm4883_laptopgiver, do sudo fdisk -l /dev/sda17:57
giveror other error17:57
giverdetects 60 gb17:57
giverdisk id is all 00017:58
videorechnerah ok seems like it stores the information mythtv uses to access the mysql database so all I need to do is add a user called mythtv with a password to the mysql database. how can I do this? all commands I used till now only changed the root password17:58
givernothing for device boot17:58
giverno start or end17:58
tgm4883_laptopgiver, pastebin it17:58
giverok17:58
giveris pastebin.com?17:58
tgm4883_laptopvideorechner, there should already be a mythtv user17:58
tgm4883_laptop!pastebin | giver17:59
Zinngiver: when pasting more than 5 lines of data please use http://mythbuntu.pastebin.com so you don't flood the channel.  Then please post the link in the channel.17:59
giverok17:59
videorechnerhow can I change the password of the mythtv user?17:59
tgm4883_laptopin the db or on the system?18:00
videorechnerin the db18:00
videorechnerdpkg-reconfigure mythtv-database -user mythtv?18:00
tgm4883_laptopno18:01
tgm4883_laptopIIRC, dpkg-reconfigure mythtv-database18:01
videorechnerIIRC?18:01
tgm4883_laptopif i recall correctly18:02
tgm4883_laptopyes it is18:02
tgm4883_laptopand you reconfigure mythtv-common to update mysql.txt18:02
videorechneri used this command and all I could change was the administrator account and its password (I stayed with root)18:02
tgm4883_laptopyou reconfigured mythtv-database or mysql-server?18:03
videorechnermythtv-database18:03
givermythbuntu.pastebin.com/d724d130218:04
giverthis is the original state of the drive18:05
tgm4883_laptopgiver, interesting, go though the installation but don't reboot when it's done18:05
giveryes18:06
