[14:59] <hallyn_> all right so after 3 days i finally figured out why i had no sound after upgrading from hardy->intrepid:  the speaker output was turned off (as was headphone), and the only way to turn it on, if you accidentallystumble upon it, is to right-click on the speaker applet and pick the 'switches' tab.  that's kind of obtuse...
