TrailbrainOk I'm downloading the upgrade off of system update.  It says it's going to take like a day.  I've also downloaded the ISO file and have 8.10 on a CD.  Can I upgrade from the CD02:29
HedgeMageTrailbrain: yes, but you need the Ubuntu CD and the Edubuntu add-on CD02:30
HedgeMageyou can't do it with just the edu addons02:30
TrailbrainIs there a how-to online somewhere?02:33
HedgeMageI have no idea, but it's just a couple of steps...02:34
HedgeMagePut in the Ubuntu 8.10 CD and add it to your apt sources, then do the same with the edu addon CD02:35
HedgeMageNow click the upgrade button and it will prefer the local sources to the remote ones02:35
HedgeMageit may make you switch between the two CDs once or twice02:35
Trailbrainhow do I add it to apt sources?02:36
HedgeMageummm... let me look up the gui method... I'm old school, I do all this from the command line :)02:37
HedgeMageTrailbrain: From Synaptic choose Edit -> Add CDROM02:38
TrailbrainI can command line --- cut and paste--I mean02:38
HedgeMageTrailbrain: note that the disc must be in the drive before you do that so synaptic can find it :)02:38
HedgeMageTrailbrain: in the command line, you edit the /etc/apt/sources.list file, but the gui is probably easier for you :)02:40

generalsnusok, so i have installed edubuntu 8.10 in vmware, with 2 nic's   1 for thinclients and 1 for internet   ... the thinclients work ok, but i am not getting any internet connection. ifconfig tells me that i have IP 192.168.0.254 on both nic's , how can i change one to dhcp? in the network manager it only says "ifupdown"13:45
sbalneavgeneralsnus: Should be able to change it in System->Administration->Network14:22
Eeyore-Jrdoes edubuntu allow fine control over network services?  printing, chat, internet, etc or must that be done elsewhere?14:25
Eeyore-Jrhrm, i'd forgotten yesterday was release day14:28
sbalneavDefine "fine control".  Certainly you can start/stop individual services, or block access to them from the network via iptables, or the like.14:36
sbalneavEeyore-Jr: Can you be a bit more specific?14:40
Eeyore-Jrper user14:42
Eeyore-Jrfor example, i want joe to use chat, as he uses it for info on technical questions, but don't want mary or george, because they use it to gossip14:43
sbalneavSeveral ways you could accomplish that.14:44
sbalneavEither through access to the chat program through group permissions14:45
sbalneavor with some kind of authenticating proxy.14:45
sbalneavThis at a school, or a business?14:45
Eeyore-Jrbusiness, but will have kids coming in after school14:45
Eeyore-Jrit's a community lab14:46
Eeyore-Jrbuilt for use by the community with all free software14:46
Eeyore-Jrit's really a starting ground for some usablity testing and idea testing14:46
sbalneavThere's multiple different ways to accomplish it.14:48
sbalneavGIYF14:48
Eeyore-Jrgiyf?14:48
* Eeyore-Jr googles giyf14:48
Eeyore-Jrbleh14:49
sbalneavGoogle is your friend14:50
Eeyore-Jrgoogle is like a friend with ADHD14:52
Eeyore-Jrup speed for *untu torrents today about 8 KB/s, for edubuntu add-on 0 KB/s :(16:00
sbalneavI downloaded the final intrepid CD last night in about 20 minutes.16:08
sbalneavMy speed was great16:09
RickZillaI just upgraded my ubuntu distro to 8.10, but I also have edubuntu 8.04...did my recent upgrade automatically update edubuntu to 8.10, or should I do that manually?21:46
HedgeMageRickZilla: how did you upgrade... using the button in the update manager?21:51
RickZillaHedgeMage:  Yes...I got my answer over in the ubuntu channel...turns out edubuntu upgrades simultaneously21:52
HedgeMageyep, that's what I was about to tell you21:52
HedgeMageHappy Halloween!21:52
* HedgeMage waves and departs21:52
Eeyore-Jrhow does ltsp comply with CIPA22:07
Eeyore-Jror specifically edubuntu22:08
LnsEeyore-Jr: see #ltsp reply..ltsp/edubuntu has nothing to do with complying to content filtering standards22:24
Eeyore-Jredubuntu is "education" or geared to that, so i would have expected it to address those type of issues i guess22:25
LnsEeyore-Jr: there are plenty of external applications to take care of this that aren't part of the edubuntu project (which is basically a subset of desktop applications and themes that sit on top of ubuntu)22:26
LnsI guess it wouldn't be out of the question to bring some "recommended" content filtering system into edubuntu, but that's really not the focus of the project22:26
