hat0hi all.  does anyone know what the replacement utility to displayconfig-gtk will be?  (or which package it's in, if i wanted to install it)  i'd like to be able to set up the dual-monitor support that x.org 7.4 is supposed to make easier/better....00:03
favrohat0: afaik it is xinerama00:14
favro!xinerama00:14
ubottuxinerama is an extension to !X to use two or more physical displays as one large virtual display. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/XineramaHowTo - See also !DualHead00:14

ubottuHi! I'm #xubuntu's favorite infobot, you can search my brain yourself at http://tinyurl.com/5zfb6t - Usage info: http://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuBots00:32
hat0favro, the thing about that is, in 8.04 there was a program called displayconfig-gtk, which basically automated a lot of that conf file editing.  displayconfig-gtk is gone now, replaced probably by something, adn i'd like to fidn out what...  it's not that i can't edit the conf file by hand, it's that computers in 2008 shouldn't need that.00:40

ubottuNew: Hi! Welcome to #xubuntu!00:43
Odd-rationalehat0: yeah, it does seem to be gone in intrepid... idk what replaced it though... (i don't think any did...)00:45
hat0Odd-rationale: thank god it's not just me! :)00:45
dcolishits been replaced by Screen Resolution Tool https://code.launchpad.net/~displayconfig-gtk/displayconfig-gtk/ubuntu00:53
dcolishmore on the decision here http://blog.qa.ubuntu.com/node/900:56
owen9914hi dcolish. thanks for help earlier i installed it on my aa1 and dont have any resolution problems after all.00:57
dcolishowen9914: Glad to hear it,  after doing some research it looks like a lot of work went into fixing xorg config woes this release00:58
owen9914yeah looks like it. only problem i have is with sound not working.01:01
TetracommI just installed a program using make install and this is the error I get when I try to run it, help?: http://pastebin.com/d56a830e01:02
dcolishha yeah, I'll less familiar with sound drivers, but I know there are some good wikis on fixing the intel sound cards01:02

ubottuowen9914: If you're having problems with sound, first ensure ALSA is selected, by double clicking on the volume control, then File -> Change Device (ALSA Mixer). gaurdroanyone else having random shutdown issues with the new kernel?01:03
gaurdroas in my computer randomly shuts down not an error during shutdown01:03
dcolishgaurdro: do you have any interesting output from messages? or dmesg?01:06
gidihi01:07
gidihow can i add a keyboard shortcut to change keyboard language??01:07
gaurdronot from dmesg, I only have stuff from after it shutdown.01:07
dcolishi'm no kernel hacker, but if you put it in pastebin i'll try to help out01:08
gidisorry but are you both talking to me?:)01:09
dcolishgidi: nope, was trying to help out gaurdro01:09
gaurdroi don't see anything interesting from dmesg b/c it's stuff after it's restarted nothing from before.  is there anywhere else interesting info might be?01:11
dcolishthere could be something in /var/log/messages01:12
owen9914dcolish: thanks again i have sound working now.01:15
dcolishgidi:  you'd need to restart X in order to change the keyboard layout so I think you'd need  script to swap out the xorgs for each language01:16
dcolishowen9914: no problem01:16
dcolishgidi:  https://help.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/desktopguide/C/switch-keyboard-layout.html01:17
gidiwell i need a shortcut to change keyboard language01:17
gaurdroi think i found something interesting,  http://pastebin.ca/124364901:18
gidifor now I use the mouse to do that01:18
dcolishwhats the program you control with the mouse? just setup a script to control that and call the script from a keyboard shortcut01:19
gidiwell i added in the panel the "keyboard layout switcher" but i am not sure if that is an "official name"01:21
gaurdroit might be thermaling off, i notice my fan hadn't been running even though i was running a processor intensive task.01:21
gidiok i think is XKB but i am not sure..01:22
dcolishyup, gidi http://ubuntu.sabza.org/2006/10/13/xubuntu-easily-switch-keyboard-layout/01:22
dcolishgaurdro: you might want to try turning off laptop-mode01:23
gidii'll try this out01:23
gidithanks a lot!!!01:23
dcolishgidi: np, when doubt, Dr. Google01:23
gaurdrodcolish, where's that setting located?01:23
dcolishits on the commandline, hold on i'm looking up proper use01:24
dcolishhaven't used it that often01:24
dcolishgaurdro: do a cat on /etc/default/acpi-support, laptop mode should be off in Ubuntu since 6.1001:26
dcolishgaurdro: http://samwel.tk/laptop_mode/faq01:28
dcolishgaurdro: are you using a thinkpad?01:30
gaurdroboth say laptop mode is off currently but i'll be double checking the next time i boot into that kernel.01:30
gaurdrono, it's a gateway tablet01:30
dcolishok was a long shot, try these scripts for the fan temporarily, http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/ACPI_fan_control_script#Variable_speed_control_scripts01:31
gaurdrothanks for all your help,  i'll mess with it some more later.01:33
dcolishgaurdro: sure, essentially, its over heating and triggering a Critical Trip Point. Thats gonna protect your box01:34
gaurdroyea, i'm wondering why it's only doing that for the new kernel though.  taking one version back it runs the fan just fine.01:35
dcolishyou might want to search launchpad for a bug, and add to it or file a new one01:36
dcolishhttps://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingACPI01:37
digi__is there a different channel for uxubuntu 8.1002:21
digi__if not I was wondering where I would put a theme to install it?02:23
j1mcto anyone intending to install ultamatix, please read this first: http://mjg59.livejournal.com/99905.html02:44
j1mcdo not do it02:44
Grey_LokiWhat -is- ultimatix? I've just looked through the site, and it looks like some kind of frontend for apt-get?02:46
Odd-rationaleit is automatix risen from it's grave... bad stuff...02:47
j1mcGrey_Loki: ultamatix is a script written to install a bunch of stuff on a new ubuntu system, but it is a nasty, nasty hack that can easily mess up your system.02:47
j1mcif it doesn't appear to have messed up your system initially, something will likely break if you ever go to upgrade.02:48
Grey_LokiI'm now reading through the LJ entry (after first having read through the official site)02:50
Grey_LokiI'm pretty much a newbie when it comes to both linux and shell scripting02:50
Grey_LokiBut what's listed there scares  even me...02:50
j1mcright.  good!  :)  hehe02:53
j1mcmatthew garrett (the guy who wrote that post) knows his stuff.  he used to develop for canonical/ubuntu, and now works for redhat.02:54
joerlend__dammit. I was able to install xubuntu on that old laptop, but it freezes before the login screen is displayed..02:54
joerlend__well.. The keyboard still reacts to caps-lock, etc, but nothing else happens. I'm not able to switch to another console either.02:55
joerlend__this is the first boot. Is it normal for that boot to take considerably longer than the consequent boots?02:55
joerlend__the harddisk seems to be working on something.02:55
joerlend__well, perhaps I'll just leave it by itself for a while. But the screen has been black for ten minutes.. I don't think that happened with hardy.02:57
Grey_LokiTen minutes is a bit excessive, unless you're on quite old hardware - usually the first boot for me 'seems' to take longer; i've never timed it though02:57
joerlend__128MB RAM and 450MHz CPU.02:58
joerlend__but I think it's strange that it reacts to caps-lock, but doesn't let me change console. I don't think I've ever seen that before.02:59
joerlend__but now, after appearing passive for five minutes, the harddisk suddenly started working as if it was its job. :)03:01
joerlend__is anything important being done at first boot, or can I attempt a reboot to check the logs? The screen is still black.03:14
powertool08I can't get the battery monitor to show up in my panel03:14
dcolishjoerlend__ press alt f2 to watch the booth process03:14
joerlend__no, I don't get another console if I do that. the screen just remains black.03:15
dcolishtry all the f keys then03:15
dcolishif you cant get a console, then I dont know how to help03:16
joerlend__hmm. But when I pressed the powerswitch, it started working hard, and then switched off.03:16
dcolishyeah, its probably doing a powerdown03:17
NecrosanC'mon guys, lets be real.03:18
NecrosanIs Xubuntu even cool?03:18
NecrosanI need an OS for my PS3, and I'm thinking Xubuntu.03:18
NecrosanWho can backup my unresolved fear of installing it on my PS3?03:18
dcolishNecrosan: and you expect us to help you now?03:18
NecrosanSure.03:19
dcolishbesides you've got ppc, good luck with that03:19
NecrosanExplain to me why I should use it.03:19
NecrosanI have two PPCs...03:19
joerlend__ok, I did a reboot, and while the progressbar was being displayed, I pressed alt+ctrl+f2 and saw the boot messages. there was a warning that an ibm system was detected and some module was deactivated because it could destroy my eeprom. Then the screen turned black again.03:19
NecrosanAnd there is a livecd build entitled powerpc+ps303:19
dcolishNecrosan: try sales, this is support03:19
aescalanteHye guys i ran a "mv" command on a directory to move the folder to a new place. The move messed half way through because mistakenly unplugged the drive. how can i complete the move now that i have all these files in 2 locations?03:20
Necrosandcolish: "Support" this potential Xubuntu CD.03:20
NecrosanI've got it burnt, right here in front of me.03:20
NecrosanCD media is on is K-Hypermedia.03:20
aescalante\03:21
dcolishjoerlend__: I have heard of some problems with apci on thinkpads, wonder if it's related03:21
joerlend__is that something I can deactivate in the bios?03:22
joerlend__or in grub?03:22
dcolishyes, hold on while i find the wiki link03:23
dcolishjoerlend__  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingACPI03:23
dcolishits a long shot, you have to acpi=off line to grub when booting03:24
dcolishaescalante: i hope that dir was not too important. moving files across volumes will lead to data loss if you unplug the drive03:26
aescalantewell i think i have most of it, by looking at the directories, is there an easy command to continue without having things overwrite?03:27
dcolishif you were moving, then what is in one will not be in the other. if you were copying thats different... either way try rsync03:27
aescalantersync03:29
aescalantegonna try it.03:29
aescalantethanks guys03:29
joerlend__dcolish, when I edit the line in grub, isn't that saved for the next boot?03:32
dcolishyes, but you can change it back once you get a successful boot03:32
powertool08Does anyone know how to add a battery monitor to the panel?03:33
joerlend__dcolish, yes it is saved?03:34
dcolishi believe so, double check by look at the menu file in /boot/grub/menu.list after you've booted03:35
joerlend__that didn't work. Still halts compeltely when gdm starts.03:36
dcolishstop gdm from starting at boot03:40
joerlend__I run it in single user mode, and everything seems fine until I start gdm, when the system freezes.03:40
dcolishdid you check you xorg logs?03:41
joerlend__no, but I deleted all the logs now, and rebooted normally to get a fresh set.03:41
dcolishcool, if you can use update-rc.d to drop gdm from autostart. it will give you more time to trouble shoot outside of single user03:42
joerlend__but then it seems I have to setup the network manually. Could you help me do that?03:42
joerlend__dcolish, I can try that. Tell me how? :)03:43
dcolishk, is it wifi? can you plug in?03:43
joerlend__I can plug in.03:43
dcolish'sudo update-rc.d -f <name>'03:43
dcolish<name>=gdm03:43
joerlend__I got a usage message..03:46
dcolishwhat the exact syntax you typed?03:46
joerlend__the one you told me to.. Perhaps I should add "remove" to that?03:47
dcolishyea03:47
dcolishman pages are good03:47
joerlend__:=)03:47
CarlFKsudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop; how do I set the wm to be xfce?03:51
joerlend__if I do tar -c /var/logs logfiles.tar then all logs will be saved to that file, right?03:51
joerlend__CarlFK, in the gdm, you have an option for it in the session menu.03:51
CarlFKthanks03:51
dcolishyes03:51
dcolishjoerlend__: no, use tar czf logfiles.tar.gz /var/log03:52
joerlend__thanks.03:54
=== zoredache_ is now known as zoredache
joerlend__this time I logged in as a normal user, and run startx. Froze.03:55
dcolishok, goto a different console, if you can and check out /var/log/Xorg.0.log03:56
joerlend__I am. :)03:59
dcolishanything good?04:02
joerlend__I didn't see anything obvious, but then most of it meant nothing to me anyway. You can have a look at the logs if you want?04:03
dcolish!pastebin | joerlend__04:04
ubottujoerlend__: pastebin is a service to post multiple-lined texts so you don't flood the channel. The Ubuntu pastebin is at http://paste.ubuntu.com (make sure you give us the URL for your paste - see also the channel topic)04:04

joerlend__xubuntu hardy worked just great, mind you.04:14
dcolishibex uses a whole new config method04:15
joerlend__oh, ok.04:15
dcolishlets look at your xorg.conf too04:16
joerlend__http://rafb.net/p/I8sb9P80.html04:18
dcolishyeah i've seen this before. for some drivers auto detect fails. do you have an xorg from hardy?04:18
joerlend__no.. :(04:19
dcolishor a livecd you can generate one with?04:19
joerlend__no, but I can make one. You think that should be sufficient?04:19
joerlend__but.. The system halts _completely_... Not even numlock or capslock responds.04:19
dcolishyup, you boot the live cd, back up this xorg then copy the new one in.04:19
balltired, cold, going to bed.04:20
dcolishwell it looks like your video card is not configuring correctly or taking very long so you need to manually do it04:20
dcolishthe older xorg should be good enough04:20
joerlend__but should that halt the system completely?04:24
dcolishit could, we'd need more log output to be completely sure04:25
joerlend__well. Only a few more minutes until the cd is written. I really hope it'll be sufficient to replace the xorg.conf file. If that works, I hope you'll also help me replace the gdm at statup, btw. :)04:26
dcolishi can give you that command now04:27
joerlend__that'd be nice.04:27
dcolishto put it back to defaults use: sudo update-rc.d gdm defaults04:28
joerlend__that wasn't so bad. :)04:28
joerlend__you know, I really hate progressbars. I really, really hate them. Because I only look at them when I really want them to finish, and that's also the times when they move most slowly, isn't it? Always, without exception. :)04:29
dcolishprogress bars move 50% slower when observed04:30
dcolishits a small program, uses your video camera to see if you're watching04:31
joerlend__I believe you.04:31
joerlend__it's the geeks version of "watched pot never boils".04:32
joerlend__anyway, I'm booting the hardy desktop cd now. Takes a while though.04:34
dcolishcool04:34
joerlend__do the live sessions use the swap partition when present, btw?04:34
dcolishonly a few more steps and you should be ok04:35
dcolishum, i'm not sure really04:35
joerlend__oh, I hope you're right.04:35
dcolishif you cat /etc/fstab and see swap then the livecd uses  it04:37
joerlend__it does indeed.04:38
dcolishthere ya go, but you can turn that off if you want, use swapoff04:39
dcolishalthough on a livecd, you'll probably want some swap04:39
joerlend__no, that's cool, I think.04:39
joerlend__specially on a pc with only 128MB RAM. :)04:40
dcolishha yeah, you *need* swap04:40
joerlend__oh, we're getting close to the finding out...04:40
joerlend__after replacing xorg.conf, I should be able to just run startx?04:43
dcolishwell restart so you're on 8.1004:43
joerlend__I did.04:43
dcolishoh cool, yea04:43
dcolishlets look at it first, make sure its ok to try04:43
joerlend__but I don't need to reboot after replacing it?04:43
dcolishno, if x is not started then its not loaded04:44
dcolishyou can just restart x as well if you modify it04:44
dcolishsend a paste of the new one if you can04:44
joerlend__http://rafb.net/p/zGgrbB71.html04:44
dcolishhmm well that doesnt blow me out of the water, but you say you've gotten video with that xorg right?04:45
joerlend__yes, it booted straight into a live session with x and all.04:45
joerlend__I rebooted into 8.10 now, replaced the xorg.conf and run startx, but it still halts.04:46
joerlend__well, with that xorg.conf.04:47
dcolishok, well i was going to say there are a few things in your xorg you can fix04:48
=== joerlend__ is now known as XiXaQ

Rugeyeah this machine works great, id hate to junk it, so hopefully Xubuntu can revive it =)07:56

MaxFrameshello. I'm using xubuntu 8.10. I've chosen the italian language but the vast majority of menus and commands are still in english. can you give support?07:58
MaxFramesit's like italian is supported at 20%/30%, not more07:59
favroMaxFrames: in terminal what does   locale   return?08:00
MaxFramesall fields say "it_IT.UTF-8" except for "LC_ALL" which is blank08:00
favrohmmm08:01
MaxFramesthis is the first time I try to switch to italian since xubuntu 6.0608:03
favro!info language-support-it08:03
ubottulanguage-support-it (source: language-support-it): metapackage for Italian language support. In component main, is optional. Version 1:8.10+20080703 (intrepid), package size 1 kB, installed size 32 kB08:03
favroMaxFrames: is that package installed?08:03
MaxFramesto check if it's installed, do I just type "sudo apt-get install language-support-it" ?08:04
favroapt-cache policy language-support-it will tell08:04
zerothisi'd use synaptic to search names for "-it" and manually install the packages I want. but I'm no expert (e io non parlano Italiano)08:05
favroif not then   sudo apt-get install language-support-it08:05
MaxFramesit said "installed:0" so I issued the install command08:06
favrogood move :)08:06
MaxFrameslogging out and back in...08:06
favroluck08:06
MaxFramesnothing has changed. many labels are still in english.08:07
favrohmmm08:08
MaxFramesat this point I assume that the only 100% supported language in ubuntu is english08:08
MaxFramesor at least, italian is not supported08:08
MaxFramesstrange... website says "Ubuntu includes the very best translations and accessibility infrastructure that the free software community has to offer"08:09
MaxFramesunless it's a precise choice, to not translate some parts of the OS for consistency08:10
MaxFramesbut then again, why is the "fav apps" applet translated, and the "autostarted apps" is not?08:10
favrofound these too - language-pack-it-base language-pack-it manpages-it08:11
MaxFramessame for "removable drives and media"... no translation; and the xfce start menu entries all still in english08:11
zerothisinstalling it does not switch to it maybe? where is the language settings in xfce? I can only find the keyboard layout08:11
MaxFramesat the logon window I chose italian and chose to make it the default language for this and all future sessions08:11
zerothisxubuntu is not ubuntu, precisely. perhaps they don't include xubuntu or kubuntu in the 100% translated statment08:12
favroI only use english so this is new to me but it seems it needs some apps added - during the install did you select italian?08:12
zerothisswitch at login, good to know08:13
MaxFramescurious though.. some labels have been translated very precisely... "mancino/destrorso" is a very refined translation for "left handed/right handed"08:13
MaxFramesit's like they left the work halfway08:13
MaxFramesmaybe I can help... let's review the contribution policies08:13
favro"it's like they left the work halfway" - or you are missing a couple of apps...08:14
MaxFrameslike?08:14
favrofound these too - language-pack-it-base language-pack-it manpages-it08:14
favroyou could try - sudo dpkg-reconfigure -plow locales08:15
zerothisagain, i'm no expert, and I have brain damage from using Windows for too long, but would a reboot help change the language?08:16
MaxFrames:D I'm another brain damaged person :D .. anyway I think logging off is enough08:17
MaxFramesmanpages-it was missing, the other packages were present08:18
MaxFrames(why wasn't all this stuff installed when I chose Italian in the lanuage control panel?)08:18
favroyou could try - sudo dpkg-reconfigure -plow locales08:18
favroduring the install did you select italian?08:19
MaxFramesno, I chose english08:19
MaxFramesway back then (7.04)08:19
favrothat "might" be the diff08:19
favrotry the dpkg-reconfigure bit08:19
MaxFramesI am now08:20
favro:)08:20
MaxFramesit's doing a lot of work "generating locales"08:20
favrothat sounds promising...08:20
zerothisyes, Linux is nicer than windows for insisting on reboots. on the rare occasion it asks for a reboot, its just asking because that's the easy way, not necessarily required for a knowledgeable users. I once installed a videocard without rebooting, just for fun. Turn out rebooting is a lot easier08:21
MaxFramesit says "done" for all locales except it_IT and it_CH which say "up to date"08:21
MaxFrames"generation complete". logging off and back on...08:22
favroluck08:22
MaxFrames:D08:22
R1cochetwhen i switch user and leave it at login screen after a couple mins im logged back in08:22
R1cochetcan i fix this?08:22
MaxFramesnothing changed08:23
favroR1cochet:  might be better to logout08:23
favroMaxFrames: it's a guess but a reboot now with the extra packages "might" do the trick08:25
MaxFramesok, rebooting08:25
favroluck08:25
MaxFramesanyway, many labels are in italian and many aren't, so it's not like the locale change did not catch at all; this makes me think that, simply, many labels haven't been translated08:26
MaxFramesmy slight disappointment is just aimed at the fact that I thought that one of the things that make *ubuntu different is broad support to languages08:26
MaxFramesthat said, I can live with some labels being in english :)08:27
R1cochetbut if i log out then the apps i have running will close08:27
hat0maxframes, ubuntu may have more translations than xubuntu08:27
MaxFramesright08:27

favroubuntu and xubuntu use the same repos so what ubuntu has xubuntu has08:28
MaxFramesnever mind... I'll keep in mind that italian is not 100% supported and go on :)08:28
hat0favro, they don't use the same desktop environments08:28
favroR1cochet: I never use switch user sorry08:29

prestonfor some reasin it wont stick with nvidia setting and when i reboot it goes back to default10:37

XiXaQby the way, if you run graphicals applications from the terminal and it requires root access, you should probably use gksu instead of sudo.10:41

favro!gksu10:45

jittopjosebecause ... windows partitions are not mounted by default.. it mounts when click on it..16:01
jittopjoseso i dont know the mount point16:02
charlie-tcaWhat do you click on?16:02
jittopjosethe icon in nautilun indicating windows partitions16:02
jittopjosebut in thunar, i couldnt find such an icon16:02
charlie-tcaMaybe someone else can jump in here. I don´t have an answer.16:04
viddjittopjose, if you set up your windows partition during your install, your system should automount it16:05
jannottYou need to mount windows partition manually what the big deal?16:05
viddin the file system, look for /windows16:05
* vidd did not need to do so16:06
viddthe windows partition was automounted16:06
jittopjoseits not automounted... it shows some icons in computer folder in ubuntu... it is mounted when i double click on it....16:07
viddjittopjose, is the system installed? or are you running the live cd?16:08
jannottAdd a line to fstab then. So it will be mounted on system startup.16:08
jittopjoseoh... if its auto mounted, then we can access it throught  Go -> open location...  right?16:09
jannottyes16:10
jannottUh. My update failed. :S16:10

jittopjoseok thank u...16:10

jittopjoseone more question.... is it possible to make nautilus as my default file manager in xubuntu?16:12
viddjittopjose, yes....16:12
jittopjosehow can i do that?16:12
jittopjosei am really used to nautilus16:12

jittopjosethen?16:15
viddif you uninstall thunar, then natilus will auto-default to your file browser16:16
jittopjoselet me check..16:16
jittopjoseno friend... i cant uninstall thunar alone... it uninstalls even xubuntu-desktop..16:18
jittopjoseany other way?16:18
dcolishyou can install nautilus on top of it, i think16:18
viddxubuntu-desktop is a "meta-package" it doesnt do anything but depend on the default applications....its safe to remove16:19
vidddcolish, he already has nautilus installed....he wants to make it the default file browser16:19
jittopjoseyea.. i installed xubuntu-desktop in my existing ubuntu installation... so nautilus is there16:20
viddjittopjose, now that everything is installed, you can remove xubuntu-desktop16:22
dcolishvidd:its all controlled by a symlink, so it can probably be updated to point to the binary he wants16:22
viddyeah...but the question is....where16:22
dcolishtry out locate natilus?16:23
jittopjoseyes... i typed nautilus in terminal... then it opens....16:23
viddno...what he wants is...when he clicks on the "home" folder on his desktop...natilus loads, not thunar16:23

owen9914Dcolish:seems to have i need. thanks18:30
dcolishTheSheep: kde = qt for the most part. hopefully they can get that port done so you dont have to install all the kde libs18:31
dcolishbut you're doing that for gnome apps in xfce anyway18:31
=== hfsdo_ is now known as hfsdo
owen9914!qt18:33
ubottuQt is the Qt (pronounced "cute") toolkit, which forms the base of KDE and is used by many applications to provide a !GUI. Install the libqt3-mt-dev package to compile Qt 3 applications or libqt4-dev for Qt 4 applications. Qt 4.4 is available from hardy-backports18:33
TheSheepdcolish: I'm more concerned about native look of the apps18:36
TheSheepdcolish: shame I can't also remove 90% of the menus from kde apps, like the dialogs for setting all the colors18:36
dcolishTheSheep: yeah thats gonna be difficult, i think thats all sorta builtin18:37
TheSheepdcolish: I know, you cannot improve usability automatically, it's a long process of building a culture of programmers who care :)18:38
hat0TheSheep: well said!18:39
dcolishI have to say that qt4 is looking really nice. I've been playing with qtruby bindings in 4.4.318:39
owen9914TheSheep: sorry to interrupt is kde generally better?18:40
TheSheepowen9914: apples and oranges18:40
TheSheepkde has always been easier to program in, and has some really great and innovative applications because of that18:41
TheSheepgnome/gtk on the other hand is more into removing unneeded things, making the applications work just the way they should, etc. -- but it's a long and hard process18:42
TheSheepin the end, it seems kde is more like windows18:42
TheSheepbut with more features18:43
TheSheepthis is of course just my personal opinion18:43
hat0they all do a lot of the same things, so for most uses it really depends on which you prefer personally.18:43
TheSheepoh, and qt themes are *ugly* :)18:43
hat0i don't like how kde apps look, just on aesthetics, but if i had to, i could get work done with it just as easily as xfce18:44
TheSheep(sorry, couldn't resist)18:44
hat0yeah, what the sheep said18:44
ggreerxubuntu seems to pretty neglected compared to kubuntu and ubuntu18:45
TheSheepyes, it's small18:45
ggreerlots of little things are broken or missing18:45
knomethe same way xfce is small compared to kde and gnome18:45
dcolishsuch as?18:45
ggreerwell, no browsing network shares by default18:45
TheSheepggreer: use a sane protocol, not windows network :)18:46
dcolishsmb or nfs?18:46
ggreerboth. thunar can't see either18:46
dcolishi use cli18:46
ggreerand mouse sensitivity is set insanely high. move the acceleration setting just one pixel from 0 and it goes completely across the screen18:46
TheSheepggreer: you can use fuse...18:46
ggreerTheSheep: yes, there are many ways I can get it working, but it doesn't work out of the box18:46
hat0other irritations:  the "mute" button on the laptop keyboard, under ubuntu, toggles mute off/on, but on xfce just sets volume to 0.  there's no pointy-clicky way to set up key-combo keyboard layout switching.  the "screen resolution" panel, or something like it, is missing from 8.10..18:47
owen9914does that mean it cant view files on windows computers18:47
TheSheepggreer: yes, out-of-the-boxness is mostly ubuntu's domain18:47
ggreeryeah, but gnome is so bloated :/18:47
TheSheepowen9914: you can, but you need to install a program to do it, or mount the network with fuse18:47
dcolishso less bloat = more work for you18:47
TheSheepggreer: I, for one, consider windows network a bloat too :)18:48
dcolishif you want automatic you need to accept that i will cost something18:48
dcolishi/it18:48
ggreerTheSheep: blah blah blah. my point is that it works in ubuntu but doesn't in xubuntu. the reason isn't bloat or lack of bloat, it's the fact that xubuntu is completely neglected by developers18:49
TheSheepsome people say that xubuntu is laready very bloated because it has so many automated things18:49
dcolishggreer: have you submitted any bug reports for what doesnt work?18:49
TheSheepggreer: that's not true18:49
ggreerdcolish: there are already bug reports for my problems18:49
dcolishhave you added to them?18:49
ggreerno18:49
dcolishevery little bit helps18:50
dcolishTheSheep: I think xubuntu could be trimmed for my taste, but then a lot of other users would probably be discouraged so its not worth the trade-off18:53
TheSheepdcolish: the problem is different people consider differnt things to be bloat18:54
owen9914why what do you consider it to be?18:54
dcolishtotally, for instance, i think network-manager to be bloat18:54
ggreerdcolish: do you use a laptop?18:55
dcolishyes18:55
dcolishi've used both iwconfig and wicd18:55
ggreerjeez18:56
dcolishggreer: is there a problem with those utils?18:56
dcolishI see it like this, if you only use nm, then your x server doesnt start, you're probably stuck if you dont know iwconfig18:57
ggreerso how do you normally join new wireless networks? let's say there's a network with SSID blah with multiple APs on channels 1, 6, and 11, how would you join that?18:57
hat0dcolish, doesn't network manager in 8.10 have the option to start before anyone logs in?18:57
dcolishnot sure, i dont use it18:58
noniejust instlled 8.10. Everything seems to be ok except one18:58
ggreerwhy would your x server suddenly not start?18:58
noniemy Logitech messenger webcam.18:58
dcolishggreer: kernel updates, for one18:58
nonieOn 8.04 it works fine but in 8.10 it doesnt.18:59

ggreerback when I had to screw around with x configs and I hated life19:00
dcolishand you've never had an update the broke your x server config?19:01
hat0well, i've been using xubuntu or ubuntu for about 2 years, and it hasn't happened.  slackware before that, since 1993.19:02
ggreerno, but a few years ago I got a mac19:02
hat0like ggreer, a lot of screwing around with x configs and hating life.19:02
ggreerand I've only used linux for servers since then19:02
dcolishhat0: it's happened to me on a few times19:04
dcolishthe latest upgrade broke my xorg with its idealistic autoconfigurations19:05
ggreernow I got a new laptop and I'm playing around with ubuntu on it. I really like xubuntu except it seems so unpolished19:05
dcolishi look at it like this, you can have a smooth riding heavy car, or a really lightweight racecar, but you can have both at the same time19:07
dcolishyou can't i mean19:07
hat0dcolish, i think what ggreer is saying is, it won't take much to polish xubuntu, not nearly as much as it would take to remove bloat from ubuntu19:07
hat0there's really not much that xubuntu doesn't do right, and what those are aren't major programming concerns, but minor tweaks19:08
ggreerhat0: right19:08
dcolishggreer: fair enough, I love this distro and i'm happy to support and contribute19:09
dcolishunfortunately, i'm more admin than programmer, so I help with support19:10
owen9914i like this distro too. my opinion doesnt really count though19:10

rabbotyeah, i've got the windows pc set as 192.168.1.1 on 255.255.255.019:30
rabbotwould i put the dns/router on tftpd32 as 192.168.1.119:31
dcolishi'm not totally following you. the tftpd server is the one hosting the images so if the windows is hosting, then yse19:33
dcolishyou need to have the system you're trying to boot find that tftp server19:34
dcolishi usually use dhcp for pxe booting19:34
rabbotyeah, its receiving dhcp requests from the client, but is logging as: "no more address or address previously allocated by another server"19:34
dcolishwell is that address already in use? you'll need two ips in the dhcp range19:35
dcolishat least19:35

toplitzinbut i'm downloading the ALT right now, im going to try running the install one more time and leave it alone for a bit whilke my buddy and I play some football on the 360,20:35
toplitzinif that doesn't work we'll try the ALT version next.20:35
charlie-tcaGood luck. I installed on a PII, 400Mhz cpu with 160MB ram, but it took a long time.20:37
* toplitzin is going to idle for a bit, will report back.20:40
danopiaHi.20:56
danopiaI want to set up a .vimrc for root20:57
danopiawhere hsuold I put it20:57
babyhueyabout to get flamed for this but;  i just install 8.04 on a -very- old machine, 64 megs of ram in it.  it wouldnt load off the cdrom drive so i did it over a use adapter, anyways, everything works, and it boots in the vmware i installed it in, but when i put it in the machine, it hangs at 'early unpacking initramfs' and does nothing else20:57
dcolishdanopia: /root20:58
danopiadcolish, oh thanks20:59
TheSheepbabyhuey: probably the -root parameter for kernel is wrong21:11
babyhueyits a uuid for the drive21:11
TheSheepbabyhuey: or it doesn't have enough ram to unpack initramfs...21:11
babyhueythat could be the issue21:11
babyhueyis there any way i can get linux on this machine/ or is it hopeless21:11
TheSheepuse a different distribution, one that has less things working out of the box but is slimmer21:12
TheSheepdsl or archlinux, for example21:12
babyhueyi tried dsl, but it wouldnt boot internally either, and when i plugged it into the vm machine it wouldnt recognize it21:12
TheSheepit also might be something wrong with the box21:14
babyhueyit was running windows 95 fine21:15
TheSheepbabyhuey: you really can't find ay more ram for it? even if you manage to run with what you've got, it's going to be painfully slow21:16
zoredacheyou are using 'it' far too ofthen.  When you plugged what in, it wouldn't boot?21:16
babyhueywhen i plugged the hard drive in21:17
babyhueyTheSheep: all it needs to do is go online21:17
zoredachebabyhuey: current webbrowsers need huge ammounts of memeory21:18
babyhueydillo does/21:18
zoredacheSo am I to understand that you are installing Linux onto a hard disk connected to one computer, then you are transfering that hard disk to this old computer?  Are you sure that the bootloader is getting written to the correct drive?  When you install onto this drive, is it the only drive in the machine?21:21
babyhueythe drive is plugged into my laptop, and connnected to usb, in the vmware instance, i make it only see the usb drive, /dev/sdb, and yes, the bootloader is getting loaded onto the correct drive.21:22
babyhueyit shows grub at startup of the old machine, and when i start the drive in vmware grub loads then the system loads fine21:23
zoredacheso, in vmware are you using the USB support, or are you using a raw-disk and pointing it at /dev/sdb?21:24
babyhueyraw disk21:24
TheSheepbabyhuey: how about the path of the initrd in grub?21:25
pyntixquick question: i have an old NVidia MX 420, should i use the nvidia-glx or the nvidia-glx-legacy driver?21:25
TheSheeppyntix: there is a compatibility list on the wiki somewhere21:26
pyntixok :S21:26
pyntixi'll look21:26
babyhueyTheSheep: the initrd is set to /boot/initrd.img and the root is set to the uuid of the drive21:27
TheSheepbabyhuey: did you try to set it to hda or sda and see if it works?21:27
toplitzinI jsut finished burning the ALT version, wish me luck :D21:27
zoredacheis vmware seeing the device as ide, or scsi?21:28
babyhueyTheSheep: i did, neither changed anything21:28
babyhueyzoredache: i believe scsi21:28
zoredachehrm...  That might be an issue... I also wonder if it has something to do with your old computer not able to handle lba or CHS?21:29
babyhueymaybe, it is very old p121:31
babyhueyone of the gray toshiba units21:31
zoredacheI believe in the VMs bios you should be able to configure that.  You might also try creating a smallish partition at the very begginging just for /boot21:33
pyntixTheSheep: i can't find the list :/21:33
babyhueydoesnt ubuntu do that by default21:34
zoredachewhat?  create a seperate boot partition?  I don't think so21:35
babyhueyi swear it creates 3 partitions21:35
ggreerit would be nice if the locale picker in the installer had a city in the US on the west coast21:35
ggreerthe closest cities in my time zone are vancouver and tijiuana21:35
ggreerif I pick vancouver then ubuntu uses the canadian servers for updates21:36
zoredachebabyhuey: when set to auto all on one partition, you usually get nda1 will be root, nda2 will be an extended partition, and hda5 will be swap21:36
ggreerand I think the canadian servers are slow because a bunch of americans are using them21:37
babyhueyhmm, maybe that is it then21:37
babyhueythis system doesnt -have- to work, i would just like it, its for a coworker that doesnt have enough for another system21:37
toplitzinok I'm back21:38
toplitzinthe ALT cd wouldn't install either21:39
toplitzinbut i did get new shiney errors.21:39
zoredachehonestly, I suspect if you go dumpster diving at the write place you'll be able to find something better...21:39
zoredache*right*21:39
babyhueyheh, most likely21:39

bizthere are several ways, you can use ~/.asoundrc or /etc/asoundrc to define your default card, or you could tell modprobe to index your cards in a specific order, the alsa "default" card is usually "default:0", which is alsa's dmix->hw:0 these days, afaik23:16
