pyntixi seem to have lost my fine explaining touch this evening >_<00:00
bizWhat's your graphics card?00:00
pyntixNVidia GeForce MX 42000:01
bizrun 'xdpyinfo | grep NV-GLX'00:01
pyntixok, nothing happened00:02
bizok, then pastebin your /etc/X11/xorg.conf00:03
pyntixhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/67026/00:04
bizok, as root or using sudo, open up /etc/X11/xorg.conf with your favorite editor00:06
pyntixdone00:06
bizin the "Device" section, change the line 'Driver "nv"' to 'Driver "nvidia"'00:07
pyntixok00:07
bizsince you're going to use a proprietary driver from nvidia, you need to install it first. You've stated that, before restarting X, try to modprobe it first: 'sudo modprobe nvidia'00:08
pyntixok so i reboot again now?00:09
bizif it works and 'lsmod | grep nvidia' returns the nvidia kernel module, you can restart X and you'll be using nvidia's driver00:09
bizA simple logout + X-Server restart (CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE) + login should be enough00:09
pyntixok00:10
pyntixhope i got it right now... i modprobed nvidia (nothing in output) and then lsmod which returned this: http://paste.ubuntu.com/67032/00:11
bizlooks fine00:12
bizIf you're unable to restart X, you just need to revert that change to /etc/X11/xorg.conf00:12
pyntixok00:13
pyntixhere goes, brb00:13
pyntixbiz, thanks a lot, it works! :D00:16
bizFine.. you were just using the "nv" driver, which is the opensource "equivalent" to nvidia's proprietary, closed-source driver you're using now. So the installation or switch between the nvidia packages shipped did nothing in reality ;-)00:17
pyntixahaa i see00:18
bizthere's another project called "nouveau", which aims at usable opensource nvidia drivers.. you could try it if your card is supported00:20
pyntixwhat is it's advantage over the proprietary drivers, except being free?00:21
bizprobably better support for some open desktop standards and the chance to fix bugs earlier and get in some more advanced features.. but 3D performance-wise, stay with nvidia's proprietary drivers..00:23

solotimhi, group, I'm a ati laptop user.  I found that xubuntu 8.10 ship open source ati driver as substitution of fglrx. Now I can't set desired resolution for my laptop.00:33
solotimany suggestion? thanks00:33

efpc2003hi, i can not see ntfs partition any more, since last week, i use xubuntu 8.04.101:30
cody-somervilleefpc2003, whats changed? Any idea why?01:31
efpc2003yes, it hapen 10 days ago01:31
cody-somervilleyes what?01:31
efpc2003happen or hapen (i dont speak english, i hope you understandme)01:32
cody-somervilleI asked you "what has changed?" and "any idea why?". Do you have any idea what has changed to cause your problem?01:32
efpc2003using thunar i always see my ntfs partition, nothin has changed on my pc, just "update-manager" its every thing up-to-date01:33
efpc2003only one thing, i downloaded xmms (source) and i installed/ was installed using a terminal "./configure make sudo make install"01:35
efpc2003and opera 9.62 using gdebi01:36
efpc2003the same thing happened some one else on ubuntuforums01:37
cody-somervilleefpc2003, You do know it isn't recommended to compile and install your own applications for the average user.01:39
solotimhello, group.  my xorg.conf file is extremely simple, only "Device" "Monitor" and "Screen" included. no resolution info declared. I have run the dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, but nothing changed. what should i do next?01:42
efpc2003see this http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=6098353#post609835301:42
solotimI have read atidriver guide of ubuntu.com ,  but I can't figure it out.01:43
solotimmy video card is legacy "ATI Rage Mobility M3"01:44
solotimI think I should use the xserver-xorg-video-ati, not the xorg-driver-fglrx01:45
solotimbut the problem is that I just can't set resolution to 1024x768.  my xubuntu desktop is stuck in 800x600@60Hz01:46
solotimthanks for any help!01:47
solotimbesides, my mouse can't work now!  it's absolutely OK with xubuntu 8.0401:47
XiXaQI have to remove xubuntu from all my old laptops, because its way too heavy. Can you recommend another distro that's more lightweight than xubuntu 8.10?01:56
XiXaQdo you think that xubuntu will continue to grow heavier and heavier, or perhaps it'll go back to the levels of hardy, gutsy or even feisty? Those worked perfectly, but now it swaps all the time, making it impossible to do anything.01:58
ballXiXaQ: seems quite useable on my box01:58
ballHow much RAM do you have?01:59
XiXaQ128MB.01:59
ballYeah, you probably want more than that for Linux01:59
ball(at least, Linux with a desktop)01:59
XiXaQwell. Xubuntu Hardy boots in 1m5s on that laptop. Intrepid boots in just over six minutes.01:59
ballIt would work beautifully with NetBSD + blackbox, but that's hardcore.01:59
XiXaQ1minute 50 seconds...01:59
* ball blinks02:00
ballI'm used to PCs booting in seconds02:00
XiXaQon ten year old computers?02:00
XiXaQit seems a bit strange to double the minimum requirements just like that.02:01
ballXiXaQ: yes, on ten year old computers02:03
favroXiXaQ: I use a minimal install based on the server cd and fluxbox - it uses 45mb to get the desktop loaded02:03
XiXaQyou're using DSL then?02:03
ballXiXaQ: No, I use NetBSD on those.02:04
ballAnyone happen to know how I mount a fat filesystem from a USB device (iPod Mini)?02:04
XiXaQmount -t vfat /dev/blabla /mountpoint?02:05
favromount -t vfat /dev/sdxx /path/to/mountpoint   should work02:05
XiXaQwhat's the least user hostile of those less resource heavy environments?02:06
ballthanks02:07
ballXiXaQ: NetBSD is a cow to install but quite pleasant once you get there... if you like unix that is.02:07
XiXaQthiese people are not geeks, they're just normal people who wanted an alternative to windows or throwing the laptops in the trash. It's such a shame that xubuntu isn't an alternative anymore, because they've grown used to it.02:07
ballXiXaQ: candidates for Edubuntu?02:07
XiXaQhuh?02:07
ballMachines that limited might make nice X terminals02:08
XiXaQmy uncle uses his laptop at his cabin, for instance.02:08
ballYeah, Edubuntu's not an option for him then, at least, not in the way that I had in mind.02:08
XiXaQNX could work, but..02:08
XiXaQyou know, people like youtube and stuff. that doesn't work well with thinclients.02:09
ballDoesn't work with NetBSD either.02:09
XiXaQthe new DSL looks nice though.02:09
XiXaQbut I suspect it isn't exactly very user friendly.02:10
ballUgh... can't drag files away.02:10
balls/away/around/02:10
favroXiXaQ: dsl is based on right click menu - but it is limited in packages02:11
ballHmm... Ubuntu'02:13
balloops02:13
charlie-tcaXiXaQ: Why not keep Hardy? it is supported for three years, 2.5 from now.02:13
ballUbuntu's "no root" policy is a pain in my butt.02:13
XiXaQcharlie-tca, well. It is an option.02:15
XiXaQball, why?02:15
ballXiXaQ: well, I suppose the real cause is elsewhere.  I can't seem to get permissions right for everyday things.02:16
XiXaQif you really want to, you can enable the root account in about five seconds.02:16
ballXiXaQ: well, I can "sudo /bin/sh"02:16
XiXaQyou can du sudo passwd root..02:16
XiXaQif you really want to, that is.02:16
ballokay, I'll keep that in mind02:17
ballI need to make this ipod world-writable02:17
XiXaQbut there is a reason why we have the sudo mechanism.02:17
favroball: do you own the mountpoint?02:17
XiXaQball, really? chmod -R g+r mountpoint?02:18
ballI created the mountpoint as 77702:18
XiXaQbefore or after you mounted the device?02:18
ballHmm, but when I mounted it it became 75502:18
XiXaQehrm, the partition.02:18
ball...and I can't seem to change that02:18
XiXaQwhat do you do?02:19
juanantonioHello02:19
favroisn't it 0777 for a dir?02:19
XiXaQball, sudo chmod -R g+r mountpoint.02:19
ballXiXaQ: sorry, I don't speak that.02:19
cody-somerville_ball, instead of mounting it as root, mount it as you02:19
XiXaQball, huh?02:19
ballfavro: a mountpoint is a directory02:19
=== cody-somerville_ is now known as cody-somerville
ballcody-somerville: that's damn strange02:19
ballI'll try it though02:20
juanantonioGot a little question for you. I installed Kubuntu on a Quad and works really fine. I wanted to install Ubuntu or Xubuntu on a PIII, what do you think?02:20
XiXaQball, sudo runs the command as root. chmod changes permissions for a file or folder. -R makes sure you also set permissions for the included files and folders. g+r means you want to give read permissions to the group. But you wanted write, so you'll use g+w instead.02:20
ballmount: only root can do that02:20
balljuanantonio: provided the PIII has ample RAM, no problem.02:21
juanantonio192 Mb is enough? I can put 320 Mb02:21
cody-somervilleI personally recommend atleast 256mb of ram02:22
cody-somerville512mb would be best02:22
juanantonioHow much space do Ubuntu and Xubuntu take from my HD?02:22
balljuanantonio: I'm trying it on a machine with 384 Mbytes of RAM and that seems to work well.02:23
ballMore would be better.02:23
juanantonioIt is a 10 years PC, I can use it as an aMule downloader02:23
balljuanantonio: I'm surrounded by ten year old PCs02:24
ballwhat is an amule?02:24
juanantonio384? I don't know if I can put that, thank you for your info about it ;)02:24
juanantonioA ed2k client02:24
ballWhat is an ed2k?02:24
ball320 Mbytes is odd, but probably about the same as 384 Mbytes for basic use.02:25
ballcody-somerville: I can't seem to mount this thing as me (well, as doris, whose machine I'm using)02:25
juanantonioI found it in KDE repositories and I know how to use it, and I don't want to know how to use another one, excep this program is Azureus02:25
cody-somervilleball, you would use pmount to do it or something02:26
balljuanantonio: it's a bittorrent client?02:26
ballcody-somerville: why not just mount though?02:26
cody-somervilleball, you might ask try setting the umask option when mounting as root02:26
juanantonioAzurues is, aMule is an open eMule02:26
cody-somervilleball, because mount requires you to be the superuser.02:26
ballcody-somerville: I did that but then you told me to try as me02:26
ball:-)02:27
balljuanantonio: sorry, I don't speak that.02:27
juanantonioWhat do you refer to then?02:27
ballmount seems a lot harder on Linux than I'm used to.02:28
juanantonioBall, so is it better speaking on resources saving Kubuntu or Xubuntu?02:29
juanantonioOr Ubuntu? ;)02:29
XiXaQthe thing is... I don't understand what new features in xubuntu warrants so much more memory usage? I couldn't hardly see the difference.02:29
balljuanantonio: Xubuntu is almost certainly lighter and quite probably nicer.02:29
ballXiXaQ: It comes with free cake02:30
juanantonioCan I download 8.10 or should I do start with an older version?02:30
ballI don't get it.  The device file is 777, the mountpoint is 77702:30
ballwtf?02:30
ballOh well, I have to go anyway.02:32
ballHopefully I'll be able to mount this thing from a Windows box at the hospital.02:32
XiXaQball, you don't change permissions on the device file..02:32
ballXiXaQ: what's the plan then?02:32
XiXaQyou mount the partition and _then_ set permissions on the mountpoint.02:32
juanantonioBall, please tell me about the version of Xubuntu ;)02:32
ballXiXaQ: I don't seem to be able to do that.02:33
juanantonioand I leave you calm and easy ;)02:33
XiXaQjuanantonio, xubuntu 8.10 is alot heavier than 8.04, but 8.04 is good for computers with less resources.02:33
balljuanantonio: I don't know much about it, I've only been using it a few days.  I have to go and visit my daughter in hospital though.02:33
juanantonioThank you a lot and have the best time you can, ok?02:33
XiXaQball, vfat doesn't support file permissions though.02:34
ballXiXaQ: good point.02:34
dcolishXiXaQ, have you tried top to identify what process is taking up so much memory usage?02:34
ballXiXaQ: any idea how to make it world-writable then?02:35
XiXaQdcolish, most of the processes belong to xfce.02:35
dcolishthere is no xfce user02:36
XiXaQdcolish, you know, when you only have 128MB RAM, a little increase in mem usage has a big impact on performance, since you begin to swap much more frequently.02:36
dcolishsure, and i'm trying to help you02:36
XiXaQdcolish, that's not what I meant.02:36
XiXaQthe processes are named xfce-blabla.02:36
XiXaQthe laptop I upgraded to intrepid yesterday is ok, because it can be upgraded and will be, but I have others which cannot.02:37
dcolishare you using a lot of panel objects?02:37
XiXaQonly the standard ones.02:38
dcolishtry running pstree02:38
dcolishmaybe you need to cut back on some objects02:38
XiXaQsuch as?02:38
ballI'm off to visit fork anyway.02:38
dcolishi dont know what you're running02:38
XiXaQstandard xubuntu.02:38
XiXaQI haven't added or removed anything.02:38
dcolishjust run pstree and see whats listed there.02:39
XiXaQstandard xubuntu hardy runs nicely. Standard xubuntu intrepid is very slow.02:39
dcolishalso try top02:39
solotimI hate intrepid xubuntu!!!!!02:40
dcolishXiXaQ, for extremely low memory systems you should read this wiki http://linux-mm.org/02:42
XiXaQheh, dcolish, the nipple has stopped working since yesterday, and I haven't touched the computer since then,.02:43
dcolishXiXaQ, not quite sure what you mean by that?02:44
dcolishXiXaQ, here is an interesting article on memory management as well http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/277002:45
XiXaQyou know.. A pointing device? I wasn't able to use it now. When I restarted gdm, though, it started working again..02:45
dcolishah, the thingie, thats what i've heard it called. Check out your /var/log/Xorg.0.log for anything mouse related02:46
dcolishalso dmesg can be helpful, but chances are its xserver related if you can detect it at all02:46
dcolishXiXaQ, for memory see how often your system is swapping out memory, vmstat 1 100. if that swap number changes a lot thats what is slowing you down02:49
XiXaQyes, it's swapping _heavily_. The harddisk sounds like I'm formatting it or something.02:50
dcolishok, thats a start, you say there is only 128M of ram eh? even xfce might be too heavy for that02:51
dcolishwithout xserver how is the system?02:51
XiXaQnice..02:52
XiXaQI've disabled all update notifications, but it's still running and using 11% or the memory.02:52
XiXaQ12% even.02:52
XiXaQhow do I disable stuff like gnome-power-manager, gnome-screensaver, etc?02:53
dcolishcan you pastebin your top, free, vmstat 1 100 output and pstree?02:53
dcolishyou can just remove it, i dont think that hurts anything02:53
XiXaQhow?02:54
dcolishbut lets look at whats really going on for now02:54
dcolishthose might not be the applications that are causing the problems02:54
XiXaQthe problem is the wild swapping.02:55
dcolishpls provide the output from top, pstree, vmstat 1 100 and free02:55
dcolishin a pastebin lnik02:55
ecais there a easy way to upgrade to 8.10 without downloading 600+ megs. just install the essentials?02:56
dcolishi'm working blind otherwise02:56
alexisBon matin!02:57
XiXaQdcolish, I don't exactly know how to do that. If I don't do anything, then it doesn't swap until I move the mouse, a window, or something like that.02:57
dcolishXiXaQ, my bad, pop open a terminal and run pstree, then put that into a pastebin? !pastebin02:58
dcolish!pastebin02:58
ubottupastebin is a service to post multiple-lined texts so you don't flood the channel. The Ubuntu pastebin is at http://paste.ubuntu.com (make sure you give us the URL for your paste - see also the channel topic)02:58
XiXaQpstree is ok, but vmstat 1 100 keeps running and the values won't make much sense if I don't do anything?02:58
dcolishpress control c to stop vmstat02:59
dcolishfyi, control c stops an active process in the terminal02:59
XiXaQI know.. You're missing the point.03:00
XiXaQI don't know how to capture it just when it's swapping wildly. If I stop doing things and just run vmstat, then no swap occurs.03:00
dcolishthen run vmstat then move some windows around and check the swap #'s. you can let vmstat run for a bit, it won't hurt the system03:01
XiXaQthat didn't look very nice: http://www.rafb.net/p/xa2a6K59.html03:03
dcolishyeah the characters got messed with during the paste. no worries03:04
XiXaQhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/5708703:04
XiXaQhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/6708703:05
dcolishso my first suggestion is to use wicd rather than network-manager for wireless config.03:05
XiXaQok? Does that handle wpa well?03:06
dcolishit works well for me03:07
dcolisheveryone i've recommended to likes it03:07
XiXaQwhere do I get that, is it in the repositories?03:07
dcolishhttp://wicd.sourceforge.net/download.php03:08
dcolish just replace hardy with intrepid03:08
XiXaQand this is alot less resource demanding?03:09
dcolishyes03:09
dcolishits a small python app and requires no gnome code to run03:10
Bumphead_how do i output from my notebook to my tv with a vga cable?03:14
XiXaQdcolish, but network manager seems to use very little memory. gnome-screensaver uses alot more. so does the power manager.03:16
dcolishdo you use suspend?03:16
XiXaQoh, but then there is nm-applet..03:16
XiXaQno, never.03:16
dcolishyou might not be unhappy without gnome-pm03:17
XiXaQdon't need screensaver og power manager either, because this laptop has to be plugged in.03:17
Bumphead_bbr03:17
Bumphead_erm, brb too03:17
dcolishthen pull'em03:17
XiXaQhow?03:17
XiXaQyou mean uninstall?03:18
dcolishsudo apt-get remove <your tormentor of choice>. Just be very careful to review exactly what is being removed. You only want to pull those packages03:18
dcolishyeah03:18
XiXaQisn't there a way to simply stop them from starting at logon?03:19
dcolishprobably, give me a minute03:21
crapo_jauneHow do i update from 8.04 to 8.10?03:21
crapo_jauneJust change repesorities?03:21
crapo_jaunerepositories i mean?03:22
dcolishcrapo_jaune, update-manager -d03:22
crapo_jauneAh! Thank you dcolish03:23
dcolishXiXaQ, you should be able to easily disable via Xfce menu -> settings manager -> autostarted apps. just uncheck the box and restart03:28
dcolishyou can also disable gnome-screensaver there03:29
zerothisI'd like to make our organization's computers act enough like other operating systems that volunteers are not scared away from operating them. Similar look, same shortcut keys, menu layout, similar names for it all ("Stuff" menu instead of Start Menu, Contortion Panel, Finger instead of Finder, etc). I know how to do all that, but, can I then setup several "new user profiles", one themed mac, one themed XP, one themed vista. T03:30
dcolishXiXaQ, also try commenting out "DPMS" in your xorg under the monitor section if it exists.03:31
zerothissetup several "new user profiles", one themed mac, one themed XP, one themed vista. Then when a new user is created, easily select one; ideally the new user would select it?03:32
dcolishzerothis, each user home folder can have a .themes folder that contains the new theme. maybe you can make that work?03:34
zerothisdoes/can the .themes contain _everything_? hotkeys, wallpaper, display manager, panel layouts, names of menu items, ?03:37

dcolishdo you have xfce?03:51
Fluidzguardro, any ideas bud?03:51
Fluidzdcolish, is that question aimed at me ?03:51
dcolishno zerothis, forgot to put the name in there03:52
Fluidzlol ok03:52
Fluidzcan anybody suggest any ides which may help me get over this obstacle?03:52
Fluidzplease03:52
gaurdrohmm,  my first suggestion would be to make sure you're burning the disk at it's lowest possible speed.  just because it passes integrity check when it's being read slowly doesn't mean it does when it's reading it fast and intermittently like during an install.03:53
Fluidzyeh burned it ar 12x03:53
Fluidzat 12x03:53
Fluidzrather than 48x03:53
zerothisFluidz: WARNING, this assumes you don't want to keep any info on the drive already, don't do this if you're dual booting or keeping some part of the drive for a different purpose. it's a partition problem. Try formating one big ext2 partition first. THis will completely ERASE THE DRIVE. after its done, go back and use the guided partition.03:54
Fluidzcool03:54
Fluidzzerothis, will the installation continue if theres a ext2 partition?03:55
Fluidzi mean theres windows xp on there, using fat3203:55
Fluidzi want to remove everything03:55
moontigerhi :)03:55
dcolishzerothis, the reason i ask is there is a file under .themes/<username>/xfwm4/keythemerc that keeps key bindings03:55
Fluidzzerothis, is there a way of formatting using the xubuntu alternative cd?03:56
moontigeri have a question about webcam support if thats ok03:56
dcolish!hi | moontiger03:56
ubottumoontiger: Hi! Welcome to #xubuntu!03:56
zerothismaybe, this solution worked for me once. the guided partition was not likeing the windows on the drive I guess. So I erased it all then used guided03:56
moontiger:)03:56
gaurdroFluidz, can you burn it any slower say 4x or 1x?03:56
Fluidzlol for sure yeah.. but darn.. ive just burned my last 2 cds.. ive a cdrw here though03:56
Fluidzwould that be adequate at 1x?03:56
gaurdroyea, that'll definitely burn very slowly.  so it'd work03:57
Fluidzu think it may be the burn?  how about zerothis's assumption?03:57
moontiger8.10 is supposed to have better webcam support i have read03:58
moontigerbut i plugged my webcam into my 8.04 laptop and it works pretty well under skype03:58
moontigerbut under 8.10 it doesnt even register03:58
moontigeranybody know anything about this kind of thing?03:58
Fluidzguardro, i dont want to waste the time of burning at 1x if its the file system which is the prob m803:59
gaurdrowell, it's not getting to the point of writing a filesystem so that isn't the issue.03:59
Fluidzlol yeah true04:00
Fluidzi thought that as much04:00
Fluidztheres no activity on the hd when i click continue04:00
gaurdroFluidz, if you can burn it at 4x or 8x and try that.  It might also be your cd drive is dirty or beginning to fail04:00
Fluidzits a friends pc.. the cd rom is really old for sure04:00
Fluidzbut when doing the integrety check, it flew with flying colours04:01
Fluidzill try ur suggestion m8.. nothing to lost04:01
Fluidzwill let u know how it turns out04:01
Fluidzhttp://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=46922004:06
Fluidzguardro, please check that link04:06
Fluidzapaprently 64mb isnt enough for xubuntu.. as quoted on that page.  Before downloading i'm sure it said that 64mb was adequate for alternative.04:07
zerothisdcolish: the .themes seems like a big piece of the puzzle, thanks04:08
gaurdro64 does seem rather low,  i'd look into dsl or puppy linux for that amount of ram04:09
Fluidzok mate, which ones the better?04:09
Fluidzfor firefox and apps included..04:10
Fluidzfor example word apps.. mp3s also ?04:10
dcolishzerothis, np, good luck with that. If you come up with a good solution consider contributing to the wiki. I'm sure other people would like to be able to offer that feature too04:11
gaurdroI've not had much experience with either to be honest,  i've had more experience with dsl but it's usually for utilitarian systems.04:11
Fluidzok cheers04:11
Fluidzwill try puppy linux04:11

TheSheepMaxFrames: system->hardware drivers10:14
MaxFramesOK. It says no proprietary driver is in use on my system. So how do I look for a driver and install it? Intel website or other?10:15
TheSheepMaxFrames: it would list drivers that are possible to use if they were needded10:16
MaxFramesso that means that there is no proprietary driver available for my hardware?10:17
TheSheepit means there isn o proprietary driver needed fro your hardware10:18

nikolamkriplmaster, I think you should update 7.04 to 7.10 first, before going to 8.04 update10:24
TheSheepMaxFrames: it's for distributions that didn't include it out-of-the-box10:25
MaxFramesthe OS runs very well and fast on my system (PIII 733, 128 MB RAM) except for videos which are stuttering10:26
favrovussvillem: can you rephrase you're question?10:27
TheSheepMaxFrames: from thier release notes: When installing Linux on a new system, you should always check the supported hardware list10:27

favrovussvillem: that would be an X issue afaik - what is not happening/happening to give you issues?10:37
vussvillemfavro: when I boot up my computer and log into Xfce, my customized desktop background is in the left upper part (about 4/5) covered with Xubuntu 8.04 default backdrop picture. When I delete Xubuntu 8.04 default backdrop picture completely from my system, that 4/5 is covered with blue area:) I can resolve the problem by restarting X10:40

Snyper`~ SCSI device sda: write cache: enabled, read cache: enabled, doesn't support DPO or FUA15:50
Snyper`some where around that15:50
Snyper`tried a 8.10 alternate cd with the same result, 8.04 alternate cd same result15:50
Snyper`i HAVE narrowed it down to my on board htp366 controler15:50

Snyper`but when i reboot the same result15:52
Snyper`parted live cd also had no trouble seeing the drive15:52
Snyper`if i unplug the drive from the htp366 controller and plug it into IDE1 everything works just fine15:53
Snyper`i might not have made it clear though that before i made the mistake of upgrading to 8.10 --- 8.04-1 worked just fine on the htp366 controller15:54

ubottuIf you're having problems with sound, first ensure ALSA is selected, by double clicking on the volume control, then File -> Change Device (ALSA Mixer). If that fails, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Sound - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting - http://alsa.opensrc.org/DmixPlugin - For playing audio files, see !Players and !MP317:38
pyntixTheSheep: i can only find one of the cards in lsmod17:41
pyntixTheSheep: not the one i want to use17:41

Grey_LokiI'll ask here as well, since i'm running Xubuntu and #ubuntu seems quite busy (C+P incoming):23:26
Grey_LokiHmm, so i'm getting an error about X not being able to load the nvidia kernel module when I first start my machine, and I get booted to safe graphics mode. A bit of googling, and I think my problem may be that the nvidia driver i'm trying to use is compiled for a kernel version higher than what i'm using (2.6.24-18-generic, says uname). Update Manager says there're no updates for my system, though it appears i'm running an outdated kernel.23:26
Grey_LokiOh, and the second bit - is there a way to force an update, or should I be looking for another solution?23:28
