ushimitsudokiAnyone having problems with windows "disappearing" after running a fullscreen OpenGL app? If I switch to compiz, they re-appear, but under xfwm4 they are "invisible" although they do show up on middle click and with alt-tab? Can't find anything on this when I search. Did not happen in 8.04.05:33

web_knowshi13:09
R1cochethi13:09
R1cochetwhat does the web know? wikipedia is not reliable13:10
deoksR1cochet: Why?13:11
deoksMany wikipedia articles contains loads of references and sources for addional information.13:11
R1cochetbecause any jackass can go in there and add/edit/remove information13:12
R1cochetif you were to write a paper in college they wont accept wikipedia as a source13:13
sorenSure they will.13:13
R1cochetim not saying the info is wrong just that its not always reliable13:13
R1cochetno they wont man13:13
sorenThey will and they have.13:13
R1cochetmaybe yours has13:14
sorenIt totally depends on the type of information.13:14
sorenJust like any jackass can edit wikipedia articles, he can also write crap on his own and post it as a pdf. That's exactly as unreliable.13:15
R1cochet£aughing Ôut £oud how is that the same?13:15
R1cochetanyways im off to bed13:15
sorenYou're claiming that wikipedia is unreliable because anyone can edit it, and I'm pointing out that that is not a unique characteristic for Wikipedia.13:16
sorenAnything that was ever written was written by some jackass who might be full of crap.13:17
sorenOr not.13:17
sorenThere's no way to know except by reading it and validating it.13:17
sorenI studied math. We'd use Wikipedia all the time to find theories, and then we'd go prove them in our papers. I don't see any problem with that at all.13:18
sorenOn the other hand, we spent at least twenty minutes during each and every lecture discussing where and how our text books were wrong in one way or the other.13:19
sorenJust because some publisher thinks your stuff is valuable enough to cut down trees, slice them up, and tattoo them doesn't mean you're right.13:20
sorenMy point is that Wikipedia might not be reliable, but in practice, it turns out to be as reliable as most other things.13:21
soren"any jackass can edit stuff on wikipedia" is really just an extension to the concept of peer review.13:21
TheSheeplots of vanity press print shops around, that will print anything13:22
sorenEven well respected publishers publish books full of errors.13:24
sorenTheSheep: ..but you're absolutely right.13:24
TheSheepanyways, it's a little offtopic here13:25

nikolamWhat will we do when most pf the world goes to Ubunutu? ;)17:13
nikolamHi, does anyone uses Linux software Raid here?17:14
nikolammdadm and so..17:15
zoredacheI do, why?17:15
nikolamI just simulated failure of my second disk during work. Partition of secon disk is in raid117:15
ron_oubuntu still isn't profitable, unfortunately.17:16
nikolamSo, just for a second system stopped and continued to work like nothing happend17:16
nikolamAfter restart, I got NO warning message of ANY kind that second drive failed!17:16
ron_oI heard the raid software is very slow, some say not. Which is it?17:16
nikolamRaid is very ok.17:16
zoredachenikolam: sure you did.  there where lots of messages in the kern.log17:16
nikolamI use 2 hdds adn for dsome partitions raid1 and raid0 for the others17:17
zoredacheron_o: software raid is slower then a really good hardware raid coontroller.  It is about the same, or sometimes faster then the fakeraid that is on many motherboards.17:17
nikolamzoredache, so how does this helps me if i just continue to do everyday work?17:17
nikolamYes, i have fakeraid dmraid on motherboard, so i am using linux software raid17:18
ron_obut it's not that bad though. I should have said "really" slower..17:18
nikolamBUT kern.log does not warns user about  failed HDD ..17:18
nikolamron_o, I use raid1 to be on safe side, ok.17:19
zoredacheyou can always look at /proc/mdstat17:19
nikolamI am rebuilding it with mdadm /dev/md2 -a /dev/sdb617:20
nikolamBut I I just reboot and continue to work, nothing will warn me that my drive has failed!17:20
zoredachenikolam: in the past raid has been used a lot on the server side, and very little on the desktop.  I suspect most people are using snmp, or some other management tool to figure it out17:20
zoredachenikolam: it is a reasonable complaint, I just not aware of anything you can do about it17:21
zoredacheunless you wanted to write yourself a script that monitors the system and emails you if there was a failure17:21
nikolamzoredache, I can post a bug as a wishlist to Warn users about that. I think that every serious system should warn user about it.17:22
nikolamzoredache, Maybe that kind of script should be working on every ubuntu that is using software raid17:22
zoredachewhat would a warning look like to you?  You ARE being warned, just not in a way that you think to look at17:22
nikolamWith no difference between desktop environment that heshe uses17:23
nikolamzore. Like some kind explanation, callout every time after logging in17:23
nikolamContact your administrator etc17:23
nikolamIt is also very interesting that if raid driva has faild, software raid does not try to repair it on next reboot17:24
nikolamso i could live next few years in oblivion that i am using raid117:25
zoredachenikolam: how would it know which drive to add in as the spare?17:25
_pinguThank you charlie-tca17:25
charlie-tcano problem.17:25
zoredachesay you had a failed drive and you couldn't replace it.  Then you plugged in a spare drive to make a backup....  If it automatically added that new drive to your raid, you would loose everything on it17:25
nikolamThat is what happend to me after first raid install, anyway, i used to use raid` with 1 disk coz after install second drive was not included in raid17:25
nikolamOk17:26
nikolamThat`s wjy we have those beautiful uuid`s ;)17:26
nikolamAlso Maybe that warning message would be enough17:26
nikolamAnd to tell user what to do to wuicklt fix it17:26
nikolamLike messages in synaptic, what to do in command line if packages are not in order17:27
nikolamThe question is how, would be the proper way to display warning17:27
nikolamUser can use Gnome, Kde, Xfce, Openbox, no X at all, etc..17:28
nikolamAnd should all users be warned at login or just those with administrative or sudoer rights?17:28
nikolamWill applications fail or wil system die if swap space is on the other HDD that stops working in the middle of the work?17:36
zoredacheif the drive your swap is on, fails, I would guess your system will most likely fail....  I haven't tried it though17:37
nikolamI tried to swapoff previously but message was that it can`t be done17:37
zoredacheyou tried it after the drive failed?17:38
nikolameven when I released memory consumtion, it wouldn`t do swapoff.17:38
nikolamno, before17:38
nikolamI simulated drive failure.17:38
zoredacheyou did it as root, right?17:38
nikolamof the second drive.17:38
nikolamyup17:38
nikolamit aswered like, that it don`t had enough memory to turn off swap, something like that17:39
nikolamswap tur off thing have nothing to do with failure test17:39
nikolamI made swap also on raid device17:39
nikolamI am thinking now to make it use 2 ordinary swap partitions17:40
nikolamso I could have swap even if one drive fails17:40
zoredacheI don't think that would work, but I have never tried it17:41
nikolammy swap is on raid017:41
nikolami am thinking to kill raid partitions and have 2 ordinary swap aprtitions in fstab17:42
zoredacheah, well that would probably fail too17:42
nikolamso if one disk fail, second swap will continue to work17:42
zoredachenikolam: but that still would most likely cause your system to fail, if a drive failes17:42
zoredachenikolam: but what happens to all the programs that where in the swap on the failed drive?17:43
zoredacheif you want things to not fail, you would probably need to use a raid1, or just put a swapfile onto your other device17:44
_pinguTheSheep, i just tried out AWN and the transparency works :-)18:12
_pinguBut how do i add the Xfce menu, places and time from panel to the Avn panel?18:13
_pinguAnyone else knows?19:10
knome!awn19:12
ubottuAvant Window Navigator is a dock-like navigation bar for the Linux desktop that positions itself at the bottom of the screen. Homepage http://wiki.awn-project.org/ Awn-Manager can be found the Gutsy !backports repository and in Universe in Hardy19:12

Ben_csif i want to install xubuntu on a pen drive, i install as a usual install but instead of HD i choose the pen drive?20:45
favro!install | Ben_cs this should give a clue20:46
ubottuBen_cs this should give a clue: Ubuntu can be installed in a lot of ways. Please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation for documentation. Problems during install? See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/CommonProblemsInstall. Don't want to use a CD? Try http://tinyurl.com/3exghs - See also !automate20:46
Ben_cswhat's the difference between persistemt install and live usb install?20:48
FauLihi everybody, has anyone got a hint for me?20:50
FauLii'm trying to get my wifi running mit ndiswrapper20:50
favro!wifi20:51
ubottuWireless documentation can be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs20:51
XFCEntralBen_cs: a persistent install will save your changes--so your settings and software persist, but with a livecd without persistance, those changes go away every time you shut it down20:51
FauLifine, but i have no clue where on my driver cd i could find my right .ini-file20:51
FauLithere is like autostart.ini, whatever.ini but nothing seems to work :<20:51
Ben_csXFCEntral: ok20:52
FauLianyone got an idea about this? :/20:54
Ben_csi read that installing xubuntu on usb drive in the ussual way will shorten the drive's life. any other ways not to shorten it?20:55
IndoctrineI don't regret leaving the familiar behind. :) Good bye gnome forever22:17

IndoctrineThat doesn't show up right on Mibbit. :P22:17
knomed'oh22:18
TheSheepknome: bored?22:18
nikolamThats the spirit. And you can still use all gnome applet plugins with xfapplet :)22:18
knomeTheSheep, not really. ;)22:19
knomedrawing some drafts for a project22:19
IndoctrineI really like xfce, it's minimal without losing functionality.22:19
knomesure.22:19
nikolamIndoctrine, it is lighter.22:20
IndoctrineIt's minimal compared to what I'm used to. :P22:20
IndoctrineI went Windows -> Ubuntu -> Xubuntu.22:21
jarnosIn one way gnome is more productive than Xfce4: You can type in terminal and see what you are typing, while e.g. a Firefox session having several windows is starting.22:21
IndoctrineI didn't find gnome was very good at that anyway.22:21
nikolamIndoctrine, I have everything I need with xfce, personaly I never used Gnome and kde, more then tens of minutes. I Need ability to make panels just how i like them. And that is what xfca is doing. Power to customize.22:22
XFCEntralyesss. the panels! :)22:22
Indoctrinenikolam: Indeed, I like the ability to just change images to make your own themes.22:22
Bumpheadxfce is better than gnome, imo22:22
jarnosIndoctrine: really. What kind of problems did you see?22:22
IndoctrineWhereas in gnome, I needed to have a theme package22:22
Indoctrinejarnos: It just didn't seem to multi-task too well - I've also seen my CPU and RAM usage halved.22:23
nikolamjarnos, are you talking about transparent console window? start composite screen and turn transparent window in xfce4-terminal settings.22:23
zoredachejarnos: what do you mean about using a terminal while firefox is starting?22:23
zoredacheI have several terminal windows open, and starting firefox doesn't impact my ability to work in those terminals22:24
Bumpheadwhat's the best terminal program to use in xfce?22:24
nikolamzoredache, transparent background of the terminal window? :)22:24
XFCEntralyou don't use tabs? :P hehe22:24
Indoctrinexfce4-terminal?22:24
Bumpheadi've just been using gnome-terminal22:25
IndoctrineErk22:25
nikolamBumphead, whatever you like :) Xubuntu comes with Terminal (xfce4-terminal)22:25
zoredachenikolam: I don't use transparent windows.  I just have multiple displays22:25
IndoctrineWhich has auto-completion too22:25
Bumpheadok, sweet22:25
XFCEntrali use xfce4-terminal a lot, but lately ive kep the xterm in my panel instead, so i can have instant access and no wait at all. but its not as good as xfce4-terminal...22:25
Bumpheadi hate case-sensitive auto-complete, though22:26
nikolamzoredache, yup :) i just started with that yesterday, afrer a hour or so watching all those fancy stuff on youtube ;)22:26
Bumpheadis there some way to disable that?22:26
jarnoszoredache: Terminal was just an example. If you start such a Firefox session in Xfce4, you get pop-ups, whereas in gnome you can switch to another application in the mean time and the windows open in background.22:26
IndoctrineIn the  settings maybe22:26
jarnosXFCEntral: I use tabs and windows.22:27
zoredachejarnos: do you have focus stealing enabled?22:28
XFCEntralahh. just teasing, seeing as using tabs might not make a difference in the first place, over multiple term windows heh22:28
zoredachesettings/windows manater tweaks/focus/activate focust stealing prevention?22:28
jarnoszoredache: Focus  stealing does not prevent popups of other apps.22:30
IndoctrineI saw that last night while I was exploring the settings.22:30
jarnoszoredache: ^Focus stealing prevention22:30
FauLihi everyone, is there a special thing about wlan passwords in xubuntu?22:34
FauLii type my wlankey when i get asked for it but when i view it after, its changed :D22:35
FauLimuch longer and stuff22:35
FauLidoes anyone know what i'm doing wrong?22:35
zoredachewpa?  You understand that your wpa key is usually something that is use to create the key.22:36
zoredacheso if I had a key asdfasdfasdfasdfsadfsadfsadfasdf it gets hashed a certain way into the key that is used22:36
IndoctrineFauLi: It gets changed to hexadecimal22:36
IndoctrineThe hexadecimal equivalent of your wlan key22:36
IndoctrineYou can see it if you click "show key" or something like that22:36
FauLiyes, but the weird thing is, i connect to my network, type in the correct key and it wont let me in :D22:36
IndoctrineMy WEP (yes, lol) key changes to hexadecimal22:37
FauLi:D22:37
FauLidoes anyone know how to change a normal key into hex?22:37
IndoctrineIf it's connecting if you leave it alone, why change it? :P22:37
IndoctrineThe OS will automatically do it.22:37
FauLithats the point :D its actually not working22:38
jarnosMore about the pop-up problem I mentioned before: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xfce4/+bug/21153322:38
FauLiit does like "shalala, attempting connection to network", asks for key etc22:38
IndoctrineI don't think entering it as hex will help you unless you're using a wlan key which uses hex rather than ASCII22:38
FauLibut then it doesnt work at all :D22:38
FauLi:/22:38
FauLiwell, gonna work it out tomorrow ;) thank you guys22:39
* Indoctrine is getting distracted from her college work. :(22:39
zoredacheIndoctrine: hide the window?22:40
Indoctrinezoredache: Can't, am at college. Hence Mibbit.22:40
viddcan someone recomend a very light java-compatable browser22:58
vidd?22:58
vidd(firefox does not equal light weight)22:59
jarnoszoredache: I don't know when "Activate focus stealing prevention" in Settings Manager / Window Manager Tweaks / Focus does work. You can stop focus stealing by unchecking "Automatically give focus to newly created windows" in Settings Manager  / Windows manager / focus, but I don't see the point in typing to a window that you can't see.23:12
