histoSaroset: you there10:12
Sarosethisto, I'm in here.10:12
histoAlright explain to me what happened from the begining.10:13
SarosetOkiedokie.10:13
SarosetThe windows boot manager kept telling me that Windows failed to start when I was attempting to load the Kubuntu install CD.10:13
SarosetI asked for advice in IRC and got absolutely nothing, soooo I went out and researched.10:13
SarosetI managed, after a few tries, to replace the boot manager.10:13
histowhat did you do to replace it?10:14
SarosetI installed something. It did work.10:14
histoDo you remember what that was or how you installed it?10:14
Sarosethttp://www.boot-us.com/10:15
SarosetI realized it wouldn't load from CD and then very rapidly managed to delete the windows partition and the boot manager itself. (PEBKAC there.)10:15
histowell just so you know the windows error you were receiving had nothign to do with kubuntu.10:15
SarosetHm?10:15
histoThat error comes up when windows fails to start ex: if you reset the machine while windows is loading. But you can just select "Start windows normally" and it would boot in to windows.10:16
SarosetWasn't trying to boot into Windows. Was attempting to get the Kubuntu CD to load.10:16
histoHow did you delete the windows partition?10:17
SarosetUsing boot-us while in windows.10:18
SarosetAnd then... I restarted the computer. *sigh*10:18
histoIt sounds like you just deleted the mbr not actually the window partition it self.10:19
SarosetHope?10:19
histoIf you want yoru windows back you can boot a  windows cd in recovery mode then select fixmbr.  If not and you want ot install kubuntu. We need to make sure your machine can atleast boot to a cd.10:19
histoWhich do you want to do?10:20
SarosetWould prefer to try Kubuntu.10:20
histoSo you don't need any of your windows stuff or data correct?10:20
SarosetBut! My computer keeps attempting to load to NIC, no matter what I do.10:20
SarosetNope.10:20
histoYeah thats just the bios for the nic.10:20
histoAlright can you get in the bios right now and tell me what the boot sequence is set to?10:21
Saroset1. USB Floppy 2.ATAPI CD/DVD ROM Drive 3. Notebook Hard Drive 4. USB Diskette on Key 5. USB Hard Drive 6. (Disabled) Network Adapter10:22
SarosetApparently, disabled means use only.10:22
histono that screen you see is just a post screen built in to your hardware. Its not actually trying to boot off of it.10:23
histoalrigth and when you have the kubuntu cd in and try to boot the computer just goes to the network card boot screen?10:23
SarosetYah.10:23
histoAlright well disable everything but the cdrom.10:23
SarosetKeeps trying to connect, fail, connect, fail.10:23
histoSave and exit10:24
SarosetDoesn't allow them to be disabled.10:24
histoPut the cdrom first10:24
histoIS the network card listed in the boot sequence?10:24
SarosetAs disabled, yes.10:25
histoThere should be an option in teh bios somewhere for netboot. Look also for a setting called netboot.10:25
histoperipherials10:25
SarosetInternal Network Adapter Boot?10:25
histoyes10:25
SarosetCurrently disabled.10:26
histok. Now make sure the kubuntu cd is in and save and exit.10:26
histoMake sure you watch the screen as it boots it may say something like "press any key to boot from cd"10:26
histoOr it may have an option like Press F10 for boot manager.10:27
SarosetNothing. Just jumped straight to attempting boot from network.10:27
histoOkay did you see anythign like press F1 or F2 F3 F4 etc... to configure. prior to that screen?10:27
histoWhat kind of laptop is this?10:28
SarosetWait, something about esc for boot menu.10:28
SarosetHP.10:28
histoOkay hit esc then right when that comes up and select cdrom10:28
histoThe problem with a lot of these hps is that they put their stupid splash image covering the boot process. But you can usually disable the splash image int he bios settings somewhere.10:29
SarosetFFS, it's doing the same thing.10:29
SarosetI selected CD/DVD and it sounded like it started.10:29
SarosetCD spun.10:29
histoDid it say press any key to boto from cd?10:30
SarosetNope.10:30
SarosetBoot Menu:10:30
Saroset1.  ATAPI CD/DVD ROM Drive10:30
histoDo you have any other cds that are bootable? Like windows or a restore cd for the laptop? Just to make sure.10:30
SarosetHm, one minute while I look around.10:31
histoThat the kubuntu cd isn't bad.10:31
SarosetFound Vista (T_T)10:32
histoPut that in and see if it will boot to that.10:32
histoJust to make sure we aren't dealing with a bad cd10:32
SarosetYup, it loaded.10:33
SarosetI'm... Going to crawl under a rock?10:33
histoNo not a big deal happens to the best of us.10:33
histoI'm not sure if the vista cd has a recovery mode or not.10:33
SarosetWait... Was I just supposed to burn the ISO straight to the CD?10:34
histoIf it does you can try running fixmbr to fix the master boot record. But it sounds like the kubuntu cd you have is bad.10:34
histoYeah but there should be files on the cd not just one iso file.10:34
SarosetOh?10:34
histoYou need to use a program to burn the iso to the cd. You can't just use windows drag and burn10:34
SarosetThat would explain a bit.10:35
histoiso files are an image of the finallized cd.10:35
histohttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto10:35
histoDo you still have a working machine with a cd burner?10:35
SarosetYes.10:36
SarosetThank you very much btw.10:36
histookay well just copy the iso off of the cd you have currently to that machine. Then follow the directions for the burning iso to cd. Basically download infra Recorder which is free and use that. If this is a windows machine I assume.10:37
SarosetYup, XP.10:37
histoThat link i posted has a download link for infra recorder.10:37
SarosetAlready installing.10:37
SarosetMuch love for you.10:39
histonp10:39
histocan't sleep so this is how I waste some time.10:39
SarosetActually, that's how this started10:40
Saroset>.>10:40
histopretty much how I started with linux to. And where I gain most of my computer knowledge.10:42
SarosetI'm just flat too stressed to sleep and got sick of Vista getting slower every week.10:44
SarosetI had Kubuntu for a while on both my laptop and desktop.10:44
SarosetDesktop is funky as is and couldn't make it work.10:44
SarosetLaptop was wonderful though.10:44
histoCouldn't get kubuntu to work on the desktop?10:45
SarosetDude, this thing is weird even with Windows running.10:45
SarosetThe microphone randomly stops working.10:45
SarosetKubuntu also kept having issues with my GeForce 680010:46
histoWas this an older version of kubuntu that you tried?10:47
SarosetWOO! New CD works! <3.10:47
SarosetYah, probably more than a year ago.10:48
SarosetI'm probably one of the five people in the world who enjoys the games made for Linux.10:49
SarosetMost of 'em aren't complex, but they are very inventive due to their constrictions.10:49
* persia suspects the number is *much* greater than five, especially because there are more than that many people just on the games packaging team10:49
* Saroset scuttles under rock.10:50
SarosetO.O Whoa! My wireless network card looks like it might work...10:50
SarosetI had trouble with that last time.10:50
histoWas last time with an older version of ubuntu?10:50
SarosetYes. I don't remember which version.10:51
histoYeah the development cycle is fast in linux and new stuff gets supported better with each version.10:52
SarosetThanks again. Like, cant tell you how much I appreciate this.10:56
histono problem.  Since your up and going i'm going to venture back in to #ubuntu10:56
* Saroset is EBKAC10:56
Sarosetkk =] Thanks!10:56
histoSaroset: remember there is also #kubuntu10:56
