blendroidhaha, well, I hope not00:13
andi_question, if the oktal number is 111 is that rwx or is it xwr? I have to read from front or from back?00:14
blendroidsee ya later (again) and thanks for the help!00:14
coreymon77bye00:14
ectospasmandi_: 111 is --x--x--x, only executable, not readable or writable00:15
ectospasmso in effect, useless00:15
ectospasmunless you're talking about umask00:16
ectospasmand I always have to look that up00:16
andi_mh, i talked about chmod....and i thought 100 is only executable00:17
ectospasmRemember that each octal digit is three bits, rwx00:17
ectospasmso octal digit 1 is --x00:18
ectospasmif you want rw and no x, use octal digit 6.  So 666 is rw-rw-rw-00:19
andi_yes, an 6 is 011 or?00:19
ectospasmsix is 11000:19
ectospasm011 is 300:20
andi_mh    okay, i think i'm dumb^00:20
ectospasmno, you probably haven't studied octal representations as much as I have00:20
andi_so i have to read from back...00:20
andi_oo1 = 100:20
andi_011 = 300:20
andi_111 = 700:21
andi_right?00:21
ectospasmyep00:21
ectospasmand 010 = 200:21
ectospasmand 100 = 400:21
andi_and 110 = 6 :)00:21
ectospasmlike I said before, 110 = 600:21
ectospasmyep00:21
ectospasmso each digit in chmod's numerical argument is three bits, rwx.  rwx = 111 = 700:22
ectospasmrw- = 110 = 600:22
ectospasmet.00:22
ectospasmc00:22
andi_I thought the other way around, that 100 = 1, 110 = 3.....00:22
andi_okay clear00:22
andi_thx00:22
ectospasmI forget if that's big endian or little endian00:22
ectospasmI think it's little, but I may be wrong00:23
lucaxcant see files on desktop!! im using kde4 and compiz...00:23
lucaxany ideas whats goin on??00:23
ectospasmwhy would you want files cluttering your desktop? This isn't Winders00:23
bobosois there a way to install kubuntu on a hd using a usb external hd or flash drive?00:23
ectospasmboboso: you'd probably have to use the alternate CD for that one00:24
ectospasmjust mark the external HD/USB key as where you install it, and it should work OK00:24
lucaxboboso: u can... install it and then change /boot/grub/system.something to read hd0,000:24
lucaxu dont need special cds to do this00:24
ectospasmlucax: you've got to get the filesystem and whatnot onto the external HD00:25
lucaxi want to be able to use the desktop as a desktop! i want to see files on my desktop00:25
ectospasmand afaik you can't do that with the standard live CD00:25
ectospasmOr at least you couldn't in previous releases00:25
lucaxive installed ubuntu in a pendrive usb00:25
Princessjoin #ubuntu-fr00:25
bobosothe only reason i ask is cause kubuntu doesnt seem to like my dvd drive00:26
lucaxi had to change some stuff on menu.lst and system.map00:26
ectospasmthe speak french their, and my francais is rusty00:26
ectospasms/their/there00:26
lucaxboboso: theres a web that tells how to install from pen, linuxfrompendrive.com or something like that00:26
Machtinis there a graphical unpack tool which actually works?00:26
ectospasmMachtin: what's wrong with CLI?00:27
Machtincli?00:27
ectospasmcommand line interface00:27
lucaxMachtin: u probably need to install unrar or tar or whatever extencion u need first to actually use the kde tool for that00:27
Machtinnothing.. i love unp.. but it doesn't work right now00:27
ectospasmgood ol' tar, unzip, gunzip, bunzip200:27
Machtinit's .rar00:28
ectospasmthe unrar command works very well for me00:28
ectospasmbut it's a CLI tool00:28
ectospasmusing linux without knowing how to use the CLI is like driving a car without knowing how to check the oil00:29
Machtini actually do like the console..00:30
Machtinjust wanted to know whether there is a graphical tool which is.. easier.00:30
ectospasmI dunno, I never use graphical tools for that00:31
Machtinsometimes i got my hands on the keyboard.. and it's quite some effort to put one to the mouse then.. and sometimes i just got the mouse in my hand and won't want to reach out for the keyboard :p00:31
ectospasmI don't even use synaptic or adept00:31
andi_ectospasm: how can I read or write for example an mp3 data? or how can I executable a .txt data?00:31
bobosolucax: www.pendrivelinux.com is that the site your were talking bout?00:31
ectospasmandi_: what do you mean?  ID3 tags for MP3?  Or a conversion tool?00:32
lucaxboboso: yeah that one hehe sorry00:32
ectospasmIf you want to execute .txt, you'll need to mark it as executable00:32
andi_now, I try to understand chmod....00:32
lucaxno one here knows how to allow kde4 to show files on desktop??00:32
andi_if an txt has the executable status what does that mean00:32
Hendershothello everyone00:33
bobosolucax np...sry if i missed something but all i see on that page is how to install linux onto a flash drive and run it from there.  i want to install it to a regualr hdd but instead of using a cd/dvd drive use a flash drive instead00:33
ectospasmandi_: you need to change the magic number for it to actually be an executable file00:34
lucaxboboso: if u follow that guida and do what it say, u are goin to be able to install from there... because u are copying the files not installing them, just do it and ull see trust me00:34
ectospasmhence the shebang "#!" at the beginning of shell scripts00:34
courtjesterghey what firewall does everyone use or recommend00:34
courtjesterg!firewall00:34
ubottuUbuntu, like any other linux distribution, has firewall capabilities built-in. The firewall is managed using the 'iptables' command (see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/IptablesHowTo), or GUI applications such as Firestarter (Gnome) or Guarddog (KDE).00:34
ectospasmcourtjesterg: if you want a standalone firewall distribution, I'd recommend IPCop00:35
courtjestergfirestarter blocked me from booting in my os last time00:35
ectospasmit's what I uese00:35
Hendershotcan anyone help me with kubuntu00:35

ectospasmI think IPCop is a fork of smoothwall00:35
Hendershotany can some one please help me with kubuntu00:37
pgreptomHi, I went from a 19" ws to a 22" ws.. changed resolutions with nvidia's tool.. but whenever i try to go into appearance or display in system settings(kde4), kde tries to go into an unsupported resolution, probab ly the old 1440x900 that no longer works, and my screen goes blank.  Any ideas?00:37

DaSkreechandi_: Ok you understand that when you create a file it gets permissions?00:55
Hendershotand dude im like so confused at the internet thing00:55
DaSkreechDon't stress it too much. Simple thing is that Wifi manufacturers pay no heed to Linux00:56
Hendershotwell its a wireless air card that is used for labtops00:56
Hendershotits a aircard 881u00:56
andi_DaSkreech: Yes, read - write - executabele00:56

Hendershotlspci -v | less01:00
Hendershotis that what i should do?01:00
Hendershotand i plug it into a usb port01:00
HendershotThen, scroll to find your wireless device and note down its details. For USB devices, type lsusb instead.01:01

courtjesterganybody tryed KMyFirewall?01:08
ectospasmnot I01:08
Hendershotand how do i type this01:08
DaSkreechcourtjesterg:01:08
Hendershot|01:08
DaSkreechIt's a Linux distro01:08
DaSkreechandi_: ok how about full permissions ?01:09
DaSkreechHendershot: it's above \01:09
andi_DaSkreech: 77701:09
Hendershotabove??01:09
DaSkreechandi_: Ok Umask takes away from 777 (really 666) to get the default permissions of a file01:10
Hendershot\01:10
ectospasma umask of 777 means every file you create will have permissions of 777 by default, which is probably not what you want.01:10
DaSkreechHendershot: Shift + \01:10
Hendershot|01:10
Hendershotahh01:10

oscaryeah01:11
oscargnome haha01:11
DarkTananyone in here use TightVNC?01:12
Hendershotopps01:12
DaSkreechandi_: you set the umask to 022 which means that it subtracts that from 666 to get the file permissions of a new file01:12
ectospasmhmmm, it appears umask isn't in kubuntu's man pages by default01:12
DaSkreechoscar: :-) Finding easter eggs already01:12
DaSkreechDarkTan: Want to ask the real question ?01:12
oscar:)01:12

Hendershot?01:18
DaSkreechcourtjesterg: Slight delay you get the same update though01:18
Hendershotbye for now01:18
DaSkreechandi_: Right. Your umask is subtracted from that01:18
DaSkreechandi_: So a umask of 022 would give you want permissions ?01:18
courtjestergyeah well 3.0.4 has been out for sometime and it still hasn't gotten the update in adept01:19
digcourtjesterg: ya01:19
andi_I don't know, what do you mean with subtract? what is from who how subtracted?01:19
DaSkreechcourtjesterg: Jackalope is being prepared. Give them a chance to do that shift first :)01:19
DaSkreechandi_: Your umask is subtracted from 666 to get the default file permissions01:20
DaSkreechSo you said your book said to set umask to 022 ?01:20
courtjestergfine what do they hadd something to it is that why we have to wait for adept instead of manually doing it our selfs?01:20
DaSkreechcourtjesterg: They take something out01:20
andi_666 - 022?01:20
DaSkreechandi_: Right01:21
courtjestergwhy do they take something out when mozilla builds it for linux hmm what do they take out i wonder01:21

courtjestergspyware?01:22
digsorry, what is 022?01:22
courtjestergadware?01:22
DaSkreechcanonical needs to ensure that Mozilla doesn't updatesomething that would break other packages they put out01:22
courtjestergi see01:22
DaSkreechcourtjesterg: If Mozilla updates the rendering engine it can break Gnome which is bad for Ubuntu when they can't control that01:22
DaSkreechdig: umask01:22
DaSkreechandi_: What do you get when you do that ?01:22
andi_its 64401:23
courtjestergi use kubuntu and kubuntu says its not a fork even though it kinda is just hasn't migrated all the way from ubuntu01:23
DaSkreechcourtjesterg: So when Mozilla updates Ubuntu takes it and runs through some tests to make sure it doesn't break anything package it and send it out01:23
DaSkreechandi_: Right so if you create a brand new file what permissions do you expect it to have ?01:23
andi_rw-r--r--?01:23
DaSkreechcourtjesterg: That would make it not a fork01:24
DaSkreechandi_: Right. so make a new file and see if it has those permissions01:24
courtjestergyeah just designed different in looks and using the kde but using the gnome as well odd even weird01:24
DaSkreechcourtjesterg: it doesn't use Gnome01:25
andi_yes, it works, but i thnk its so much complicate, if i want to make a file's permissions, i have to think about 5min till i know what to do.....:)01:25
DaSkreechandi_: Not really :-)01:26
DaSkreechandi_: make a dir and play with it for about 30 minutes after that it gets real reasy01:26
DaSkreechandi_: well make a sub dir and play with the permissions on that as well01:26

courtjestergso in new version do they plain on taking konqueror out and just sticking firefox embed in? Cause Konquoeror is a good browser just doesn't work with everthing hence i can us it to view myspace but the flash i think doesn't work or isn't supported or is the java while seamonkey does except the flash backgrounds are white so going to test my plugins in firefox and see what i can get01:27

DaSkreechcourtjesterg: no Kubuntu will never ship with firefox01:30

DaSkreech|DarkSmoke|: For one directory?01:30
DaSkreechunlikely01:30
|DarkSmoke|could it be the upgrade of KDE? :/01:30
DaSkreechpossible but also unlikely01:31
courtjestergyeah but they can use features that firefox has since it is open source and actually add the features firefox has to konqueror this i would like to see01:31

Ash-FoxHow do I reset the menus and file associations to default in Kubuntu intrepid? I've done numerous upgrades, moved from various distributions to another while keeping my home directory. Unfortuantely now it's become quite messy with lots of dead applications in menus, associatinos that don't work etc. I don't want to delete my KDE profile because there is a lot of things in KDE I wish to keep, from kopete, kmail settings and mail t01:37

It is now part of the ubuntu universe repository (envyng-gtk OR envyng-qt) we suggest you use envyng if every other (official/supported) method fails! it can have various results from works, to fails!!!  if you want the very latest drivers from the manufacturer you use them at your own risk12:10

It is now part of the ubuntu universe repository (envyng-gtk OR envyng-qt) we suggest you use envyng if every other (official/supported) method fails! it can have various results from works, to fails!!!  if you want the very latest drivers from the manufacturer you use them at your own risk14:46

umanHi everyone one, i have a programming question and dont know where to ask it so i would really appreciate it if you guys could help me out or tell me where to ask it. All i want to do is a simple little app (in visual c++ or visual basic 2008) where i have a list of words in the source code and when i run the app i can see the first word in like a form box or somthing, then there should be a button i can click that makes the first word that was in the form21:50
umanbox be replaced by the second word. when that button is pressed again, the previous word is replaced by the next and so on. Im desperate, i really need this. Thanks in advance. (i guess it could also be in python if i use the text editor, and i need it to run in windows xp. Thanks21:50
