[02:59] isn't it a fat filesystem? [02:59] yes [03:00] Dolphn would be able to mount a FAT16 or FAT32 file system ? [03:00] I try to use the vfat type but keep getting an error about wrong fs type [03:01] vfat is fat32 no? [03:01] vfat can be fat16 as well [03:01] its for windows like OS [03:01] example mount -t vfat /dev/ndas-37018340-0 /mnt/MedaiPlayer [03:01] vfat offers Long file names [03:02] i bet dr dos is 16 [03:02] yeah [03:02] 'fat' vs 'vfat' [03:02] or -t msdos ? [03:02] i think it is 16 [03:02] vfat was an enhanced version of fat16 for windows 95 with LFN support [03:02] as far as i remember [03:03] yup [03:03] good old days [03:03] i never was clear on where the term vfat came from.. :) 'very fat' :) [03:03] i wrote a FAT16 file system with VFAT couple oof years ago for accessing Sd cards with microcontrollers [03:03] virtual fat [03:03] i have an external drive that was formatted by my satelite box in a DR-DOS format. I'm using as a DVR. But I can't access the files on my computer [03:03] but its real! :) [03:04] do a 'sudo fdisk -l' and see what filesystem it says it is [03:04] yeah [03:04] could be funky something [03:04] for large disk support [03:04] i was thinking dr-dos had some optuions/enhancements to the dos filesystem also.. [03:04] it is listed as "unknown system". but the ID is c8 [03:04] Interesting... [03:05] could be some special FS used by the box.. ? [03:05] yeah [03:05] how big is the drive? [03:05] the drive has 2 partitions. Fat32 and Unknown. I want to access the unknown [03:05] often times they use funky formatting for speed/ease of use [03:05] does DR_DOS file system support FAT32 or is it just fAT16 , i forgot.. what it supported.. remember seeing the code in 2005 :P [03:05] the fat32 partition is 10 gig. and the other is 480 gig [03:06] yeah [03:06] that tells you somethign [03:06] fat32 is limited to 127gb? [03:06] fat32 supports upto 4 TB i guess? [03:06] or 2 TB? [03:06] "The project's efforts have resulted so far in adding native support for large disks (LBA) and the FAT32 filesystem. There were also several other enhancements, including improved memory management and support for the new FAT+ filesystem extension which allows files of almost 256 GB in size on normal FAT partitions." I finally get to ask a support question here :-/ I just upgraded from 8.04 to 8.10. The install seemed to work fine (I used dist-upgrade) however, when it rebooted, the system took me to the CLI [15:52] I realized that the path for the default-display-manger was wrong, so I canged /etc/X11/default-display-manager [15:53] Then it complained about the theme not being correct. So, I fixed the THEME key in /etc/default/kdm.d/20_kubuntu_default_settings [15:54] However, now, when I try to start KDE, there is no mouse or keyboard activity, although the keyboard works in the CLI (and Ctrl-Alt-1 works) [15:55] I heard I need to install xserver-xorg-input-evdev and -input-synaptic, however when I do that I get the message "dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem." [15:56] So... I run dpkg with those flags, and I get over 200 lines of "dpkg: dependency problems ..." where it complains about a BUNCH of packages being "not configured yet" [15:56] what am I supposed to do [15:57] It's almost like it didn't finish installing some packages. Any ideas? [15:57] You see, i have a problem...i cant install ubuntu and kubuntu....graphical package doesnt work at all...live cd isnt work too....what can i do? [21:43] no idea [21:43] Ok. Let me see if I can find it somewhere. [21:54] whats the difference between suspend to ram and suspend to disk? which one is better? [21:54] one suspends to ram, the other to disk [21:55] ram is faster to suspend to and from, but may be lost if your battery dies [21:55] Suspend to RAM would be faster to recover from, but less reliable [21:55] well im on a desktop so battery life isnt a issue [21:55] or power goes [21:56] either way when I put my pc into suspend i dont have anything open, its merely for power saving purposes [21:57] is there a specific one i should use if im using the nvidia proprietory driver? === diego is now known as Guest34484 [21:58] hi all [21:58] ho all [21:58] hi all [21:58] any one here [21:58] !hello [21:58] Hi! Welcome to #kubuntu! [21:58] !ask [21:58] Please don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line, so others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-) [21:59] Anyone here who can tell why I can start Firefox via the KMenu and Yakuake but not with alt+F2? [22:00] kaminix: Make sure you are choosing the firefox app and not the folder or favorites. Has happened to me in the past. [22:00] !anyone [22:00] A large amount of the first questions asked in this channel start with "Does anyone/anybody..." Why not ask your next question (the real one) and find out? [22:01] DaSkreech: Anyone know why that is? ;) [22:01] itś the same on every channel, first question is always if they can ask the question ;) [22:02] he, wha [22:02] sorry [22:02] kaminix: where did you get firefox from? [22:07] draik: I just type 'firefox' in the alt+f2 run dialog [22:07] kaminix: odd, i did too and can access it in that dialog [22:08] sigma: It was after I had done some stuff too my system, though I don't know what made it not work. [22:08] I mean, it runs fine when I type it in yakuake or start it via the KMenu. :s [22:09] kaminix: hmmm well its probably something you changed [22:09] It is, but I wish to change it back :s === root is now known as Guest426 [22:11] greets [22:11] kaminix: try deleting the .kde directory and log out and back in so the system can re-generate it. WARNING - this will delete all your kde settings [22:12] just trying to install 8.10, and ran into an annoying problem... it won't let me select a display larger than 800x600, and I can't find anywhere in the settings that I can override the faulty auto-detect [22:13] diggernet: you will have to setup the /etc/xorg.conf file manually. what graphics card is it? [22:14] I don't know how far I got until k9copy froze, but it did it anyway. :( [22:14] sigma: Trident Cyber 9397DVD [22:15] how can I tell what driver X is using? [22:17] diggernet: /etc/X11/xorg.conf should have it listed for you [22:18] draik: nah... this is the new auto-configure X, the xorg.conf is basically empty [22:18] oh shoot forgot about that [22:18] Nothing with a driver in it? [22:18] the xorg log seems to say it's detecting the chipset right, tho [22:18] nope [22:25] #summer === eric is now known as Guest47317 [22:25] it's the new trend [22:30] oh man... digging thru the xorg log. it says "TFT Panel 1024x768 found", then proceeds to go through this huge list of possible resolutions, and for every 1024 one announces it won't use it. [22:31] Hey I just did an update in kubuntu and it seems to have ruined my system. [22:31] x did not start automaticall. It took me to a tty to login, after logging in i started it with: startx [22:31] but no sound [22:33] emma: any errors from startx ? [22:33] And hi!! :) [22:34] hey there [22:34] No errors that I'm aware of. [22:35] It's like the monitor just dies [22:35] emma: is your DM running? [22:35] then i get a tty prompt after a while. [22:35] what's a DM ? [22:36] It just takes me to tty 1 [22:36] It's not even making it to the part where it would ask for me to log in. [22:37] this looks suspicious... "Using default hsync range of 31.50-37.90 kHz". what are proper values for a 1024x768 LCD? [22:38] This doesn't make any sense. Kubuntu was working great. An update should not set me back to nothing. [22:38] emma: understatement. [22:43] I got it sort of working by doing, sudo /etc/init.d/kdm restart [22:44] Why would doing an update force me to start kubuntu this way? [22:47] how to automount ntfs filesystem at startup*? [22:47] Anyone want to decompile and then rewrite a java URLHandler to work in Ubuntu? [22:48] success! [22:49] google told me to run 'gtf 1024 768 60', which spit out a modeline and said hsync 47.70. I added "HorizSync 31.5-48.0" to xorg.conf, and all is good.
