vidd    wget -q http://apt.wicd.net/wicd.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add -14:11
nynhi, how do I remove entries from either autostart or the /home/.config permanently? simply deleting them doesn't work14:11
hardcorevidd do i just type that in the terminal?14:12
viddhardcore, just copy/paste ...but yes14:12
viddnyn, have you gone into the autostarted applications in the applications->settings->settings manager?14:13

hardcorei found the same command on the site you posted earlier14:15
viddyes...that is where i got it to post here =]14:16
viddnyn, should be in your .cache/sessions folder14:16
hardcoreok i tried to update and got that big error message again14:17
viddidk for sure nyn .... i never saved sessions ever since the powers that be added that retarded funtion auto-selected14:18

hardcorevidd, still get the big error message14:19
nynalright then, thank you very much, that has been driving me crazy :)14:19
viddhardcore, there must be something using your sources.list file.....14:19

nynvidd, one last thing: I cannot remember ever having agreed to save any sessions and I'm very sure that I've never checked the respective box on the logout screen, how can I prevent any sessions from being saved?14:21
viddthe box is auto-checked by default....you have to UNcheck the blasted, evil contraption14:22
hardcorehttp://paste.ubuntu.com/75959/14:22
nynit is not checked on my screen, anyway I'll reboot now and see if it worked :)14:23

viddthe update completed14:24
viddtype "clear"14:24
viddthen do "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade"14:25
hardcoreoh ok14:25
viddthe output you got was it reporting that it was able to check each repo in your sources.list file14:26
viddnyn, better?14:26
nynvidd: it worked, thank you very much :)14:26

hardcoreoh ok14:32
hardcoreit usually displays the update box when i type sudo apt-get update14:32
viddin the future, try "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade"14:32
hardcoreis there a reason that box doesn't come up anymore?14:32
viddhardcore, you are thinking "update-manager" not "sudo apt-get update"14:33
hardcorei thought it is the same thing, before installing wicd it would bring up the updatemanager14:34
hardcoreis that a normal difference after installing wicd?14:34
viddno....14:34
viddits the diffence between using command line tools and graphic tools14:35
TheKingHello, yesterday my screen was fine14:35
hardcorebut the command tool use to display the graphic tool, just like typing an app does14:35
TheKingIt was running @ 1028 x 76814:35
viddbefore talking to me, you likely used synaptic to install programs14:35
TheKingNow when I turned it on   todayt14:35
TheKingMy display is blue and I have been reduced to 800 x 60014:36
hardcorecan i still use synaptic to install programs?14:36
viddhardcore, absolutely14:36
hardcoreyou should be able to change your resolution in the settings14:36
TheKinghardcore, I used to be able to go up to 1024 x 76814:36
TheKingbut now I cannot.14:36
hardcorevidd, how come it doesn't display the graphic tool after typing it in anymore? just worried something is wrong14:36
viddits just i prefer to give one-line commands you copy/paste into a terminal then "click here....scroll down for six days.....click there...."14:37

hardcorevidd, how come before installing wicd typing sudo apt-get update would bring up the graphical tool but not now?14:38
viddhardcore, im not sure what graphic tool you are expecting to see14:38
hardcorevidd, update manager14:38
viddapt-get update would NEVER bring up a graphic tool14:38
hardcorereally? i must be mistaken, sorry about that14:38

nyncan I use wicd only for the vpn stuff and have my wireless connection still managed by wpa_supplicant?14:48
viddnyn, wicd works with wpa14:48
nynit's just that it took me forever to configure my notebook for wlan and I dont want any program to mess with the settings that I have now -.-'14:49
hardcorevidd, thanks man14:50
nynso I'd rather keep wpa_suplplicant for the wireless connection and use the other program only for vpn purposes if that possible14:50
viddhardcore, np14:50
viddnyn, you can still use that vnc viewer with your existing wifi configuration14:51
nynhm, it says here that wicd is basically just a gui for wpa_supplicant..14:54
nynbefore upgrading I tried to establish a vpn with pptpconfig, I would have liked to give that one another try but it seems to have been removed during the upgrade and I read that it has become obsolete due to some new features of the NM14:59
nynnow I need an alternative since NM doesn't work for me14:59
viddyeah...i like how they "obsolete" stuff just because they star crap-app includes a tiny piece of it15:09
TheSheepvidd: they?15:19
viddTheSheep, yes "they"15:23
viddthe powers that be15:24
vidddisplayconfig-gtk is another excelent app that "they" obsoleted15:26

TheSheepvidd: and why 'they' is not 'you'?15:28
vidd"they" are the people that maintain the repos15:28

TheSheepare you just complaining for the fun of complaining?15:29

sancho21Will usb-creator remove all files in the selected partition of my usb drive?15:33
nynI want to establish a vpn with my university15:33
nynso that I get a uni-IP and be able to use certain services that are limited to users with uni-IP15:34

nynat least they say that pptp encryption is required so I think they do15:35
viddnyn, did you install network-manager-pptp and network-manager-vpnc?15:36
nynyes both15:36
viddwhat about network-manager-openvpn?15:37
nynsec, I'll find out15:37
nynalso installed apparently :)15:38
viddand it does not work for you....what fails?15:38
nynI cant tell, I configured the VPN in the NM applet and click "connect" and thats about it, nm never tells me if the connection failed or anything, it it as if nothing happens15:39
vidddo you get some authentication error? no data traffic? or just not a specific IP range on your vpn?15:39
nynI dont get any information out of it and I dont if NM has some debug-file or anything15:39
nyn*know15:40
viddnyn, so the big question is....how do you know it failed15:40
nynbecause I'm unable to use that service that requires the uni-IP, thats how I know15:40
viddnyn, this is outside my area of expertice...but i will try15:48
nynthank you15:49

vidddoktoreas_, you get my link?15:54
nynvidd, no but that sounds interesting, I'll definitely have a closer look15:55
viddAngel_inside, your system specs are better then what i am using (with xubuntu) right now!15:55
viddAngel_inside, but you will brobably want to use either the mini or the alt install disks15:56
viddthe live (desktop) cd will be a bit sluggish to respond with such low ram15:56

viddnyn, let me know if that helps you out15:57

Angel_insidevidd: which one do u recommend? 8.04 or 8.10¿?16:03
vidd   nyn dunno....try relaunching nm without the & at the end of the line.....it should show some output in the terminal16:03
Angel_insidevidd: perhaps XFCE it's heavier than its predecessor16:03
doktoreas_vidd, thx yes16:03
Angel_insideXFCE 4.42*16:03
viddAngel_inside, its the installer's that have issues....not the post-install system16:04
viddAngel_inside, i recomend the 8.1016:04
Angel_insidevidd: I know, but I suppose xubuntu 8.04 and 8.10 have slightly different system requirements16:04
viddAngel_inside, and as long as you are connecting to the internet via hard-wire, id use the mini iso16:05
Angel_insidevidd: just wanna know which one would fit better my limited hardware conditions16:05
viddAngel_inside, do you want simple encryption?16:05
Angel_insidevidd: I'm afraid I'm not, I'm conected via wifi16:05
nyn** Message: <info>  Activating VPN connection 'Uni'.  -- thats all I get16:06
viddAngel_inside, does the wifi work "out of the box" or do you not know?16:06
Angel_insideit's 100% linux-comp but I haven't tried... I'm not sure about it16:06
viddnyn, and what happens when you try to access something there?16:06
viddAngel_inside, does it run windows or linux right now?16:07
Angel_insidevidd: linux mint XFCE16:07
Angel_insidevidd: and it's so slow16:07
viddAngel_inside, did you have to do any fuss to get the wifi to work?16:07
Angel_insidevidd: no, just plug it16:08
viddAngel_inside, then go with the mini iso16:08
Angel_insidevidd: will it connect thoroughly?16:08
viddAngel_inside, if there is no mess with wifi, you should be able to get wifi to work with the mini installer16:09
viddand get all your install stuff real-time16:09
viddor...use the alt cd16:10
* vidd prefers the mini since it gets all the latest-and-greatest during install....no "update-manager" after install16:10
viddAngel_inside, one thing you also might want to consider is using something lighter then xfce....like lxde16:11
viddhttp://u-lite.org/16:12
Angel_insideI see16:12
Angel_insidevidd: and how shall I install it from console? I mean, I'd install the OS without GUI and after that install lxde for instance16:13
viddAngel_inside, sudo apt-get install lxde16:14
nynvidd, I've only ever tried to access that service which basically is a scientific search engine that usually you have to pay for but that you can use for free if you have a uni-IP16:14
nynthat service is denied to me due to the wrong IP16:14
viddnyn, so its an IP assignment issue16:14
Angel_insidevidd: lol its in the repositories!!16:14
Angel_insidevidd: ok, I think I'll give it a try16:15
Angel_insidethak you!16:15
viddAngel_inside, yeah...thats why i recommend it16:15
Angel_insidevidd: than you!16:15
nynyes exactly16:15
viddnyn, pastebin me the output of ifconfig16:15
Angel_insidevidd: una pequeña duda16:26
Angel_insidevidd: el XFCE incluido en LM XFCE se corresponde con el paquete xubuntu-desktop?16:26
viddAngel_inside, no hablo espanol16:26
Angel_insidevidd: sorry, it was my fault16:27
Angel_insidevidd: I'm chatting in different IRC channels and sometimes I mix everything up16:27
viddyou want lxde not xubuntu-desktop16:27
viddxubuntu-desktop will install xfce, not lxde16:27
Angel_insidevidd: do you know if XFCE included in LM XFCE is called xubuntu-desktop16:28
Angel_insidevidd: I know, I just wanna uninstall it16:28
Angel_insidevidd: after installing lxde16:28
Angel_insidevidd: but I don't know if it's the same packet or not16:28
viddAngel_inside, check to see if lxde is available.......16:28
Angel_insidevidd: linux mint is basically ubuntu16:29
Angel_insidevidd: it should16:29
viddif it is, then simply remove xorg, with the --purge switch (this takes out all desktop stuff and thier config files) and apt-get install lxde16:30
Angel_insidevidd: oops, it does not find lxde...16:32
viddAngel_inside, ok...then might i recommend http://u-lite.org/?q=node/2#install after you "sudo apt-get autoremove --purge xorg" *****dangerous code******will remove entire Desktop environment and leave you with a CLI-Only system********16:34

viddAngel_inside, did you purge xorg like i said b4?17:10
Angel_insidevidd: no17:10
viddyou want to run the following command:17:10
Angel_insidevidd: because I was unsure about the installation of lxde17:10
Angel_insidevidd: but if I do purge it know I'll delete lxde, won't I?17:11
viddsudo apt-get autoremove --purge xorg && sudo apt-get install lxde17:11
Angel_insidevidd: I see17:11
viddthis will purge everything and reinstall lxde17:11
Angel_insidevidd: but what if I do it from lxde?17:11
viddAngel_inside, no matter where you do it, you will need to reboot17:12
Angel_insidevidd: ok, thx17:12
viddso its best to do it from a tty17:12
Angel_insidevidd: I suppose17:13
Angel_insidevidd: but I've understood that autoremove was only used to remove orphan packages17:13
viddAngel_inside, when you remove xorg, it will orphan ALOT17:14
viddso if you autoremove an app, it takes out the orphans too17:14
viddotherwise, you would "sudo apt-get remove --purge xorg && sudo apt-get autoremove --purge && sudo aptget install lxde17:16
vidd=]17:16
viddsee the difference?17:16
Angel_insidevidd: yes, tahnks17:16

Angel_insidethanks*17:17
Angel_inside(poor handwriting)17:17
viddAngel_inside, yes...it should17:18
Angel_insidevidd: it should...17:19
viddAngel_inside, if it dont...let me know.... (or sudo apt-get install lxde xorg to be sure)17:20
viddsudo apt-get autoremove --purge xorg && sudo apt-get install lxde xorg17:20
viddbetter?17:20
Angel_insidevidd: how about  sudo apt-get autoremove --purge xorg && sudo apt-get install xorg lxde17:21
viddok17:21
Angel_insidevidd: just in case17:21
* vidd notices that its just like 3x4 and 4x317:21
Angel_insidevidd: I thought the order you wrote it was the order it followed17:22
viddyes...17:22
viddbut it should really make no real difference17:22
viddlxde is going to pull in gdm, wich will pull in xorg, so its a mute point17:23
Angel_insidevidd: I see17:24
Angel_insidevidd: I'll give it a try17:24
viddif you had modified your system to not drag in recommends, THEN it might make a difference (but i doubt it)17:24
Angel_insidevidd: from tty, just in case17:24
Angel_insidevidd: I dind't17:24
Angel_insidedidn't*17:24
Angel_insidevidd: cross fingers, here it goes...17:24
viddcrossing fingers and praying are not required.....=]17:26
Angel_insidevidd: I hope so17:26
Angel_insidevidd: I'll tell you in a while17:26
Angel_insidevidd: I've found the packages17:30
Angel_insidevidd: it's just xfce17:30
Angel_insidevidd; now I can find the dependencies...17:30
Angel_insidevidd: so I don't need to uninstall xorg17:30
Angel_insidevidd: good!17:30
viddAngel_inside, how deep are you going to go to get rid of all those unneded dependencies?17:46
viddalso Angel_inside i recommend file-roller over xarchiver17:47
Angel_insidenot much further than apt-cache depend xfce417:47
Angel_insidevidd: :-P17:47
viddAngel_inside, that only removes the first layer....17:48
viddwhat about the items in the second, third and fourth layer?17:48
vidd(for example, xfce depends on item 1, item 1 depends on item 2, item 2 depends on item 3, 4, and 5, item 3 depends on ....and so on17:49
Angel_insidevidd: good point17:50
viddin fact, x11-common might be a better choice then xorg!17:50
Angel_insidevidd: so the only way is reinstalling xorg...17:51
Angel_insidevidd: x11? really?17:51
* vidd noticed that only removing xorg left items such as gxine and gftp on his system17:51
Angel_insidevidd: ...17:52
Angel_insidevidd: so how can you remove everything in relation to XFCE?17:52
Angel_inside(or any other desktop manager)17:52
viddyou can either "autoremove --purge" or get to the very lowest common denominator17:53
viddi cannot guarentee that autoremove will get everything17:53
viddbut x11-common looks like the lowest common denominator17:54
viddeverything gui-based depends on it at some point17:54
viddshort of formating and installing a CLI-only system, autoremoving and purging x11-common is the most tourough17:56
* vidd cant spell17:56
Angel_insidevidd: I see17:56
Angel_insidevidd: xD sometimes it also happens to me17:56
viddppl talk to me for my wonderful assistance....not my horrible spelling =]17:57
* vidd would remove more of the basic system if he could.....17:59
* vidd would like to build his system with only grub, the kernel and apt-get18:00
Angel_insidevidd: xDDD I'd love it18:04
Angel_insideI must go18:05
Angel_insidevidd: thanks so much for your help18:05
Angel_insidevidd: and for  your attention18:05
truderhi, i've just installed xubuntu 8.10, and i'm having a problem with connecting to wifi.. (i confirmed that wifi is ok, by using a puppy live cd and i connected fine). In xubuntu, although i'm seeing my ap listed, i cannot get it to connect.18:06
truderanyone may help please ?18:06
viddtruder, what does lspci (or lsusb) say your wifi card is?18:07
vidd\0. sinbox18:07
* sinbox waves back at vidd18:08
truderlet me confirm..18:08
truderhmm.. vidd, my card is connected via pcmcia, would it appear with those commands ?18:11
viddlspcmcia18:12
truderok, so i have socket1: device 0: orinoco_cs18:12
* vidd suspects its a broadcomm chipset18:12
viddtruder, and how about lspci?18:13
truderbtw, this used to work with the previous xubuntu18:13
sinboxyou uknow the card model truder?18:13
viddjust want to double-check18:13
trudermn128 ss-lan card 1118:13
Capa`in debian, i would set the essid manually in terminal, then run "dhclient"18:14
truderi'm not sure which entry to mention in lspci, cause i have: (host bridge, pci bridge, 2 cardbus bridges, ethernet controller, serial, multimedia audio, bridge, ide, usb, another bridge, and vga compatible controllers)18:15
viddtruder, can you open nm?18:16
vidd(network manager)18:16
viddyou might want to set a static IP18:17
truderi've already tried setting a static IP, but kept getting the same18:17
viddwhat does iwlist tell you?18:18
vidd*iwconfig18:19
sinboxall the info is in japanese for that card :/18:20
viddtruder, what does iwconfig tell you?18:23
truderIEEE 802.11b ESSID "clint" Nickname:"Prism I" Mode: Managed frequency2.412ghz, Access Point: None:18:24
truderand link quality noise signal stuff..18:25
truderthe wireless network itself is listed in the network manager, and the signal seems ok18:26
truderhowever, if i click on it, after a few seconds i'm disconnected18:26
viddtruder, what is your wifi network's actual ESSID?18:26
viddtruder, then next question is....18:26
truderthe ssid is clint, let me confirm essid18:26
viddwhat kind of security do you have on that wifi network?18:27
truderat the moment, no security at all..18:27
truderit is open, no encryption nothing18:27
truderi wanted to get this to work first18:27
viddno MAC filtering?18:28
trudernot even that no18:28
truderthe strange thing is that with the previous version of xubuntu, i connect with a fresh install18:29
viddare you talking to us on that system?18:31
trudernope on another machine18:31
viddtruder, try this.... "sudo /etc/ini.d/networking restart18:31
viddtruder, try this.... "sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart18:32
truderk ( i've restarted the machine more than once though).. trying it now18:32
truderok, i got ignoring unknown interface eth0=eth018:33
truderdunno what's that... eth0 is a wired connection18:33
truderand it's ok as far as i can see18:33
truderand no, i got disconnected again18:34
viddtruder, your network interfaces has eth0 enabled, but network manager wants to control it (causing a conflict)18:34
viddopen your /etc/network/interfaces and edit out everything but lo settings18:34
viddsave that, and restart the networking again18:35
truderi only have two lines: auto lo and  iface lo inet loopback18:35
viddthere is no mention of eth0?18:36
trudernot at all no18:36
viddhrm18:36
truderand yes i'm sure eth0 is connected18:36
viddso am i18:36
trudereth0 is a wired connection, and i'm getting the ip via dhcp18:36
truder( from the wireless router )18:36
* vidd hates network manager18:37
trudervidd, do you think i'd solve the problem by using a different network manager ?18:37
* vidd uses wicd18:38
viddhttp://wicd.sourceforge.net/download.php18:38
truderi'll give it a try18:38
truderthanks for your help18:38
truderi'll be back later.. thanks for now :)18:40
sinboxops gone18:40
sinboxdefinitely a broadcom chipset:  Chipset Broadcom BCM4306, BCM205018:40
sinboxhad to use some special setup tool for my broadcom pcmcia card before the laptop died18:41
penguin-upi just instlled PC/OS(like xubuntu) this AM.....create new folder is greyed out....are permissions required??18:43
sinboxthen again his card seems to work a bit, I had to follow those instructions here: http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/b43#firmwareinstallation   and then it just worked18:43
viddsinbox, so truder has a bcm chip eh?18:43
viddpenguin-up, WHERE did you create the folder? and which user created it?18:44
penguin-upvidd:  in file system18:45
penguin-upi the admin....i think18:45
viddpenguin-up, can you state the full path?18:45
penguin-upnaw...i don know about paths....just graphic method!18:45
viddand HOW did you create it18:46
viddso you opened up whatever file manager you were using....right-clicked and said "create folder"?18:46
penguin-upi want to just click on file then create folder, just like windows....but it wont let me...it greyed out18:46
viddperhaps you should go to your OS's chatroom18:47
viddsince you apparently dont want to answer my questions so that i can help you with a system ive never seen b418:47
penguin-upthe help menu said that this is the chatroom for PC OS18:47
viddno...this is for ubuntu xfce18:48
penguin-upPC OS same as Xubuntu i believe18:48
vidd(commonly called xubuntu)18:48
penguin-upPC OS uses Ubuntu XFCE18:48
viddno....pcos is pcos18:48
viddwhat file manager do you use?18:49
penguin-upI think PC OS is brand new but same as Xubuntu18:49
viddare you going to answer my questions or not?18:49
penguin-upnot sure....gnome i think18:49
viddgnome is not a file manager...that is a desktop environment18:50
viddin the tool you opened to create the folder.....18:50
penguin-upthen maybe KDE....i dunno18:50
penguin-upit doesn say18:50
viddclick "help"->"about"18:50
privet_is this a good place to talk about "networkmanager applet", or is there a better room?18:50
viddprivet_, what problem you having with it?18:51
penguin-upWelcome to PC/OS OpenDesktop 200918:51
viddare you on the live cd? penguin-up18:51
privet_vidd: not really "problem" as such... I just have 2 modem devices that are not being recognized by nm and I would like to find out what I can do to add them into the config etc.18:51
penguin-upno installed18:52
penguin-upinstalled it this AM on HD18:52
viddprivet_, you probably need to install the drivers for them....sorry....im no good with dial-up =\18:52
viddpenguin-up, so you right-click the desktop to add a folder?18:53
penguin-upno i click the file sys icon on desktop18:53
privet_vidd: no- they work fine (manually running pppd), but I would nm to see them and do the dialing for me...18:53
privet_vidd: thanks anyway, will keep looking18:53
viddprivet_, like i said...im no good with dial-up.....18:54
penguin-upahhh, yes i can create new folder on desktop....now to move it !!18:54
viddprivet_, i know the old network-admin handled dial-up....try installing that18:54
privet_vidd: will try, thanks.18:54
viddpenguin-up, so right-click on this folder you created and choose "properties"18:55
penguin-upprivit:  when i used dialup i had to download gnomePPP dialer for ubuntu....hope that helps18:55
penguin-upok....it says read only....how do i change that18:56
viddpenguin-up, first....who owns it?18:57
viddpenguin-up, and how does one get this PC/OS?18:58
penguin-updownload from net.....680mb then make disk image18:58
viddpenguin-up, WHERE????????18:59
viddwhat is the home page18:59
* vidd has never heard of it18:59
* vidd found it....pc-os.org19:01
penguin-upvidd:  go to http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=pcos   and check it out19:02
viddpenguin-up, when your right-clicked the folder, and chose properties, the window SHOULD have told you the folder owner....who is it?19:02
penguin-upit says group   then my name19:03
viddit should also say Owner: (name)19:04
viddif the folder isnt owned by someone, then no-one can use it19:04
penguin-upyes....owner name19:04
penguin-upowner name and my name19:05
viddopen up a terminal window19:05
penguin-upit is open19:06
viddtype "thunar" and hit [enter]19:06
penguin-upi am there19:07
viddnavigate to this folder you created19:07
vidddo you see it?19:07
penguin-upahhhhh now create folder is not greyed out......tnx19:07
viddyes? no? dont care?19:08
penguin-upit works there now no probs....19:08
penguin-uplive and learn on chatrooms  :-)19:08
viddok...so the reason you had an issue is because you dont have a /Desktop folder19:08
viddclose thunar19:09
penguin-upok19:09
viddtype "cd /home/"[your username]19:09
penguin-uplooks like i can only do stuff in terminal not always in file manager19:10
viddfor example, if your logon name for this system is "owner" you would type "cd /home/owner"19:10
penguin-upaha19:10
viddpenguin-up, terminal is what im most familiar with19:10
penguin-upi am more familiar with graphic mode!    ur cheque is in the mail19:11
viddok...so are you now seeing "~$" at the end of your prompt?19:11
viddor do you see "~#"?19:12
penguin-uptnx....i gotta run now.....CU next time ....tnx agn19:12
viddok...so much for actually HELPING the guy!19:12

sinboxwell you got him to get to where he wanted to19:12

sinboxbut with all the proprietary codecs included it would seem19:13
vidddcolish, i already have half the internet on my auto-ignore list...what are you tolking about?19:14

* vidd is the EVIL twin19:16
viddnow....what is the default audio controler that saves your volume settings when you restart x?19:17
viddok....so lets start with "alsa"!19:17
dcolishi think audio settings must be saved at a lower level than the graphical layer, right alsamixer or aumix would be good places to start19:18
vidddcolish, before i removed x11-common, it was fine19:19
viddso it has to be above the graphical scale19:19
vidd*layer*19:19
dcolishi expected it wasn't that poorly designed19:20
viddsweet....all i had to do was install sound!19:21
viddamazing how that works!19:21
TheSheepvidd: install sound?19:22
scribawfHow do I get drivers for USB to Serial Converter (PL-2303) on Xubuntu?19:24
dcolishscribawf: did you google it yet?19:25
viddTheSheep, alsa wasnt installed...so that was why it didnt work19:25
scribawfdcolish;  Yup, but only found for Redhat and the supplied drivers also for Redhat ONLY!19:26
dcolishis it an rpm or do you get source code too?19:26
viddscribawf, strange.....19:27
dcolish!alien19:27
ubottuRPM is the RedHat Package Management system. Ubuntu uses !APT, not RPM. RPM packages are not supported (the package "alien" can allow installing them, but it's quite dangerous and unsupported)19:27
viddi googled "pl-2303 ubunutu" and the first thing i got was http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=32275919:27
scribawfdsolish;  appears to be source didn't see anything for RPM19:27
scribawfvidd;  OK will try that19:28
scribawfvidd;   gotta admit didn't fully use google search properly - forgot ubuntu after device!19:28
viddscribawf, the more keywords ya use, the closer to what you want youll find yourself!19:29
scribawfthanks for info will struggle through it19:29
dcolishscribawf: did you read the whole thread that you shared?19:29
dcolishoh vidd, you got that link ma bad19:30
vidd=]19:30
dcolishthe solution is on the last page towards the bottom19:30
scribawfdcolish;  going to ck the thread vidd sent19:30
* vidd is bad too19:30
dcolishscribawf: you'll need to use alien, as suggested before to install the rpm of the drivers19:30
scribawfdcolish;  don't  think have that on board sys (alien) but will give me something to do19:31
scribawftnx again, and sure I'll be back if I get hung up!19:32
dcolishok good luck19:32
scribawfI'll probably need it LOL19:32

dcolish!opera19:33
ubottuopera is an advanced and free (only as in price) web browser.  Install it via Applications->Add/Remove..., making sure that "Show commercial applications" (dapper only) is checked. For more info on opera please see: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OperaBrowser19:33

dcolishwhy dont you want to use opera again?19:38
tmpnick2Hi, I'd like to convert a bootable iso to encrypted iso, burn it and be asked for a password when I boot from that iso. Please suggest me a solution for GNU/Linux, because I can't really find it. Thank you19:38
vidddcolish, because it use QT for starters19:39
viddthats 3 strikes right there19:40
dcolishvidd: what do you have against qt?19:40
viddthen...its propriatary...might just as well us IE!19:40
dcolishbut you like flash and java?19:40
viddi dont LIKE flash and java....i NEED flash and java19:41
viddbelieve me....there is a HUGE differnce19:41
dcolishso why dont you like qt again?19:42
viddits the crap KDE is built on19:42
TheSheep#xubuntu-offtopic surely is empty these days19:43
dcolishsorry19:43
dcolishvidd: if you'd like to continue, i'm on that channel as well19:44
viddits not really "off-topic"19:44
viddnor is it what i really want to chat about19:44
TheSheepit is not19:44
TheSheepI just thought I'd advertise it a bit :)19:45
dcolishok whatever19:45
vidd=]19:45
dcolishi'll never agree that qt is garbage especially now that its got solid webkit integration19:46
dcolishkde is another project in itself that is qt based19:46
TheSheepdcolish: it's very uncomfortable to mix gui toolkits19:46
TheSheepdcolish: each one of them has its own best practices and design decissions19:47
viddimpressive....flashplugin-nonfree didnt try to bring in firefox19:47
TheSheepvidd: do I sense sercasm?19:47
TheSheepsarcasm even19:47
dcolishTheSheep: thats non-sense as far as it being uncomfortable19:47
viddTheSheep, no...im serious.....19:48
dcolishTheSheep: qt does a great job of being cross platform which is its purpose19:48
dcolishas a developer i'd much rather write for qt than gtk19:48
* vidd thought for sure that *buntu would do everything it could to cram that bloated browser down his throat19:48
TheSheepdcolish: gtk is hard for developers19:49
TheSheepdcolish: that's true19:49
* TheSheep crams msie 8 down vidd's throat19:49
* vidd uses linux, linux EATS M$ products for breakfast!19:50
vidd=]19:50
* dcolish likes w3m19:51
TheSheepdcolish: w3m doesn't even support https19:51
TheSheeplynx with vi keys :)19:52
viddTheSheep, speaking of M$ Inescapable Evil, did you ever get the xubuntu site to load properly?19:52
dcolishTheSheep: yes it does, just tested it19:52
TheSheepvidd: I thought we fixed it with knome...19:52
TheSheepdcolish: maybe that was password-protected sites... something like that... or maybe they fixed it already19:53
viddThe-Kernel, ive been out of the loop for a while =]19:53
TheSheepvidd: but you *did* see the new site?19:53
dcolishTheSheep: probably fixed it, works well actually. I still the lack of js support for cli browsers19:53
TheSheepdcolish: would be pretty useless without css support19:54
viddTheSheep, yeah...but M$IE (Inescapable Evil) does not display it properly19:54
viddstill19:54
dcolishTheSheep: good point, they should work on that too!19:55
viddcli browsers have pretty much gone the way of the MAC19:57
vidd*i mean* diansaur19:57
vidd=]19:57
dcolishuh last time i checked MAC is still pretty important. You arp much?19:57
viddMAC hardware is dead...its all the same now19:58
viddsince they went with the intel chip, the only consideration now is OS19:59
* TheSheep looks nervously towards #x-ot19:59
sinboxstill has a long shelf life with all the mac fans out there19:59
viddthere is no reason to pay extra for the same hardware19:59
sinboxof course there is19:59
sinboxit's a "brand" thing19:59
viddand now we are getting WAY offtopic19:59
sinboxtrue20:00
TheSheepwhy don't we just all go there and stop worrying?20:00
* vidd has actual issues....20:00
viddepiphany browser wont load =[20:00
TheSheepvidd: what's the error?20:01
viddsomething about failed to execute dbus-launch to autoloaunch D-Bus session20:01
TheSheepweird, xfce should start a dbus session on login20:02
* vidd doesnt HAVE xfce20:02
dcolishoh, what are you running?20:02
viddslim, openbox20:03
TheSheepthen I guess it's a bug in whatever desktop environment you are running20:03
dcolishcheck for dbus-launch being installed20:03
TheSheepthis is the moment when "all that useless cruft" proves useful ater all20:04
dcolishyeah dbus is pretty cool20:04
viddyeah...and its alreaduy installed too20:05
dcolishis the daemon started?20:05
viddi was missing dbus-x1120:06
dcolishwhat files are in there? seems like that should be a dep for anything dbus20:06
vidddcolish, no...its for some things that are graphical that need dbus =]20:07
vidd(i would assume20:08
dcolishfrom my understanding of dbus, its also purpose if so graphical applications can communicate on the desktop, hence its name, desktop-bus (dbus)20:09
dcolishif/is20:09
viddwhat do i know?20:10
viddim just trying to completely gut all excess from my system and get as lean and mean as possible20:10
dcolishits actually a really cool feature of x11, similar to growl on osx20:11
* vidd is still upset that adobe/macromedia refuse to post a linux version of shockwave20:12
dcolishvidd: so you're using openbox, how do you like that compared to fluxbox?20:12
vidddunno...never used fluxbox20:12
dcolishi thought shockwave was dead and flash is now shockwave20:12
dcolishor replaced shockwave20:13
viddbut its nice20:13
viddno...there are still shockwave apps scattered about the web20:13
dcolishare you a big cli junkie? if so check out awesome, dwm, wmii, xmonad, stumpwm20:13
* vidd is not a cli junkie....just running VERY lightweight hardware20:14
viddnice....sun-java6-plugin didnt drag in firefox either20:17
* vidd better double-check that something else didnt sneak it in20:17
sinboxhehe, you sure seem to have something against firefox20:18
viddi have a system with only 64+32 mb ram20:18
viddfirefox eats it alive20:19
dcolishhow flash and java on that?20:21
dcolishhows20:21
viddepiphany-browser works with flash and java!20:21
vidddcolish, i will let you know when i get this set up on that system20:22
sinboxah yes I understand, funny the xubuntu docs recommend a minimum of 192mb of ram for 8.0420:22
viddyeah...im only like 100 MB ram short =]20:22
dcolishvidd: does openbox provide a desktop or do you have to build it yourself?20:23
vidddcolish, its a desktop20:23
viddmostly...its your file manager that controls your desktop, more then the wm20:23
dcolishi see, it can replace the actual wm component of a given desktop env20:24
viddi used lxde, so i dont know how much is openbox, and how much is lxde, and how much is pacmanfs20:25
viddwow...this browser practically flies!20:27
dcolishEpiphany?20:28
viddyeah20:29
viddits lighter then ff20:30
djbushdiohere's a stupid question: if i uninstall xfce, when i start up will a land at a terminal?20:33
djbushdio*i land at a terminal20:33
vidddjbushdio, no....you will get an error message when gdm fails to load20:33
vidd=]20:34
vidddjbushdio, no....you will get an error message when gdm fails to load20:34
djbushdiooh.20:34
djbushdioproblem.20:34
vidddo you WANT to get a CLI-only?20:34
djbushdiomebbe20:34
djbushdionot just yet, but maybe later20:35
dcolishdjbushdio: turn off gdm then20:35
viddif you WANT cli-only....the you want to 'sudo apt-get --autoremove --purge x11-common'20:35
viddif you just want to boot to a cli for just the session, then choose "terminal" from the session list on the login page20:37
djbushdiook, might try that in virtual machine to make sure20:37
djbushdioyeah, did see that on session list, but not full screen20:37
vidddjbushdio, if you want full scree cli----just use one of your 6 tty screens20:38
djbushdiotty? (acronym not sure)20:38
vidd[ctrl]+[alt]+[f1] (or f2, f3, etc20:38
vidd!tty20:39
ubottuTo get to the TTY terminals 1-6, use the keystroke ctrl + alt + F1-F6 respectively (Alt+F7 will get you back to your graphical login).  To change the resolution for your TTY, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ChangeTTYResolution.20:39
vidddunno what tty stands for, just know that its full screen terminal =]20:39
dcolishteletypewriter20:44
dcolishany terminal has tty in unix, not just the fullscreen ones on boot20:45
djbushdioso to get the terminal, press ctrl-alt-fx where x is 1-6, and this is at the login screen.20:48
djbushdiof7 is graphical20:48
dcolishno on boot, once gdm starts it locks you out of all other tty20:49
dcolishthat is why you'd need to stop gdm from starting on boot20:49
djbushdioso when at boot, upsplash?20:50
dcolishwhich is reversable as well, sudo update-rc.d -f gdm remove20:50
dcolishyes20:50
djbushdioill try that next time.20:50
dcolishto add it back sudo update-rc.d gdm defaults20:50
dcolishalso see man update-rc.d and man gdm20:51
djbushdioSo in summary, press ctrl-alt-fx (where x is 1-6) at boot to get terminal only. Restart to get graphical.20:51
vidddjbushdio, almost....20:52
viddctrl-alt-f7 to get back to graphical20:52
viddor restart if you want to....20:52
viddor sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart20:52
viddor..../.. =]20:53
djbushdioI'll probably just restart20:53
viddas you can see, there are many ways to do the same thing in linux20:53
djbushdioyeah...20:53
vidddjbushdio, that is the LEAST efficiant method!20:53
djbushdioyeah, well, its the easiest to remember...20:54
viddit shouldnt be....20:54
djbushdioand it works...20:54
viddif you can remember ctrl-alt-f1 to get away from the gui, you should remember ctrl-alt-f7 to get back!20:54
viddrebooting is like smashing your car into a tree to get a fly off your windsheild!20:56
djbushdiointeresting metaphor, somehow i like it.20:57
viddactually, its a simile (metaphors do not include words such as "like")20:58
vidd=]20:58
djbushdiooh right, forgot the "like." believe it or not I'm a junior in high school.20:58
djbushdiotaking Honors English 320:58
djbushdioand getting an A20:58
viddbelieve it or not, i have a kid older then you!20:59
djbushdiowhoa...20:59
viddand one your age....and 2 younger20:59
vidd=]20:59
djbushdioand its actually "older than you" not "older then you"20:59
djbushdioowned21:00
* vidd never made any claims about ability to spell or type21:00
djbushdio...21:00
vidd=]21:00
djbushdioyet corrects me on simile vs. metaphor21:00
viddthat was a needed  correction .... typos are fine here21:01
djbushdioyeah, thats what they all say...21:01
djbushdiomaybe i mistyped simile21:02
viddjust like my "sit and set" sound the same...dont mean i dont know the difference =]21:02
sinboxbig typo that was  :)21:02
djbushdioyou forgot an apostrophe21:03
djbushdioactually 221:03
viddno...i didnt forget it....that key dont work =]21:03
sinboxplease join #analanguage21:03
sinbox;-)21:03
viddwe are WAYYYYYYY -offtopic21:04
viddsinbox, im AFRAID to go there....21:04
viddim not sure that has anything to do with grammer at all! =]21:04
djbushdioyeah... anyway, will follow tips on non-graphical version (ctrl-alt-f7 to get to gui), thank you, and got to go...21:05
sinboxah well, vidd after your slim openbox comment you now have me reading pages like this: http://ktown.kde.org/~seli/memory/desktop_benchmark.html21:05
knomeTheSheep, i haven't actually had time to push the new version to bzr, nor do the changes...21:17
TheSheepah, ok21:21
Iskrsomeone please tell me21:28
Iskrwhat's the hotkey21:28
Iskrto make terminal menu visible?21:28
Iskri have it invisible by mistake21:28
knomeIskr, right click terminal -> "show menubar"21:29
viddIskr, just right-click and re-check21:29
Iskrrightclick doesn't work anymore21:29
viddIskr, there is no default hotkey for the menu's in terminal.....that hotkey is disabled by defualt21:31
Iskruhm21:31
Iskrit seems the thing is quite serious21:31
Iskrif even right click doesn't work anymore21:31
Iskrisn't it?21:31
Iskrany ideas on why this can be happening?21:31
viddyou started messing with config files?21:32
Iskrno21:32
knomeIskr, not really. what happens if you start a new terminal?21:32
Iskri was using it and it was fine21:32
Iskri closed it21:32
Iskri opened it21:32
Iskrand it was like this21:32
viddah...you have combiz running?21:32
Iskrno21:32
Iskr(i closed and reopened many times)21:33
Iskrmaybe next reboot?21:33
viddIskr, sudo apt-get remove --purge xfce4-terminal && sudo apt-get install xfce4-terminal21:34
viddyou may or may not want to also re-install xubuntu-desktop21:34
Iskrno i don't want to reinstall xubuntu-desktop21:37
Iskrand when i tried to remove the terminal with synaptic it asked me to do mark also xubuntu-desktop to remove21:37
knomevidd, any experiences with kvm?21:37
Iskrwouldn't it be the same with apt-get remove?21:37
viddknome, no...21:37
knomeIskr, xubuntu-desktop is only a metapackage21:37
knomeIskr, it doesn't *really* remove anything with it21:38
Iskrah seriously?21:38
knomeyes.21:38
viddIskr, xubuntu-desktop is a "metapackage" that means it doesnt actually DO anything but depend on all the stuff that makes up xubuntu21:38
Iskri thought it removed all things listed in the metapackage21:38
viddIskr, no...it only brings them in21:39
knomevidd, ok, i will tell you some test results later on21:39
Iskrah ok21:39
Iskrthank you21:39
Iskri'll maybe try it21:39
viddIskr, remember to --purge.....21:39
viddotherwise, when you reinstall it, it will behave the exact same way!21:39
viddknome, i dont even know what kvm is21:40
Iskryes yes i know21:41
knomevidd, kernel virtual machine21:41
Iskrthank you all21:42
viddIskr, would you rather i bug you about stuff you already know? or not warn you about annoyances that make the unknowing pull thier hair out?21:42
vidd=]21:42
* vidd prefers to err on the side of the unknowing21:43
vidd=]21:43
Iskrright21:43
Iskri just said that i knew21:43
Iskrbut i thank you for having warned me21:43
Iskr=)21:43
Iskrgood night21:43
viddbut someone just following along that is having a similar issue may NOT know...see what i mean?21:43
Iskryes21:44

Iskrno i'll do it tomorrow21:44
Iskrgood night and thanks!21:44

knomenot really21:47
knomei don't use wmv ;)21:47
viddi dont either....just this one prn vidd21:49
knomelol21:49
knomethen just use gstreamer for it :P21:49
viddim not bringing in 10 meg of codec for 3 minutes of prn21:50

knometsh..21:53
knome0KB porn21:53
knome-offtopic? :)21:53
viddbut that makes it seem like the agrivation of adding gsteamer would be worth it21:53
viddno....wmv support is sorta on topic21:54
