=== jennifer is now known as jennifer_

_2nogagplz indeed some are harder than others,03:39

bobthemilcan someone help me install kubuntu without a cd-rom? I got the intrepid alternate i386 iso, pulled out the vmlinuz and initrd.gz files to /boot/kubuntu/, as well as put the .iso there. I've modified GRUB to properly boot off this initrd and kernel, but the installer fails to locate the ISO. I've tried many tricks, but none of them work.10:06
bobthemilThis website: http://www.ubuntugeek.com/install-ubuntukubuntuedubuntuxubuntu-without-cdrom-drive.html has a very good (i guess not so good?) guide for it that I used to install ubuntu via netboot on a different computer today, but it's not working with this ISO thing10:07
ActionParsnipbobthemil: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/925285.html10:08
bobthemilThe step: "ln /dev/loop0 /dev/loop/0" is giving me errors10:08
ActionParsnipbobthemil: what do you have in /dev/loop ?10:09
bobthemilActionParsnip: The OP in that thread has the same issue that I do, but he does not find a solution.10:11
bobthemilActionParsnip: nothing, as far as I know. I don't quite understand what /dev/loop does10:11
ActionParsnipbobthemil: if you have a usb stick / sd card you can put the installer on there and install from usb10:11
bobthemilActionParsnip: laptop's CD-ROM is broken, won't boot off USB10:12
ActionParsnipbobthemil: its so you can mount iso files basically10:12
bobthemilActionParsnip: I figured it had something to do with that, since that's what the guide I linked above tells me to do10:12
ActionParsnipbobthemil: are you dual booting?10:13
bobthemilTechnically, yes10:13
ActionParsnipbobthemil: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2894810:13

ActionParsnip^ that guide is much simpler10:17
bobthemilfaileas: es. it has a working network10:17
bobthemilfaileas: Going with a fresh install of kubuntu10:17
bobthemilOkay. I'm in the shell of the installer, and "ls -l /dev | grep loop" returns nothing10:19
bobthemilwait10:19
bobthemilthat guide you just linked uses the kernel and initrd from the hd-media version of the install10:19
bobthemillemme see what I can do real fast...10:20
ActionParsnipbobthemil: all you need are those 2 files and the system will come up (albeit in a very limited fashion)10:20
bobthemilRight. Like I said before, GRUB is properly loading the initrd and kernel, and it's booting up into the install program10:21
bobthemilalso, I'm noticing that the guide you just linked is for ubuntu10:21
bobthemilis there any significant difference between ubuntu and kubuntu aside from KDE/gnome?10:21
ActionParsnipbobthemil: then modify the grub conf like the guide10:21
ActionParsnipbobthemil: you get kwin instead of metacity10:21
ActionParsnipbobthemil: then all kde apps instead of gnome ones10:22
bobthemilRight10:22
bobthemilOkay, so here's my current plan of action10:22
ActionParsnipbobthemil: if you have ubuntu, you can run sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop and get the same thing10:22
bobthemilActionParsnip: yeah, I tried that and now X doesn't work10:23

ActionParsniptkstka: does it run ok if you turn off all the desktop effects?10:24
tkstkahow would I do that?10:24
tkstkawhat do I type?10:24
ActionParsniptkstka: its in the menu under system or maybe settings10:25
bobthemilso my current plan of action is to grab the kernel and initrd from archives.ubuntu.com/.../intrepid/.../HD-MEDIA/, put them in /boot/, then boot off of that kernel and initrd, and then pray that the installer will find the iso10:25
ActionParsniptkstka: you can turn the desktop effects off there10:25
ActionParsnipbobthemil: sounds like you got some fun ahead of you10:25
bobthemilHowever, I'm slightly worried about using kubuntu-8.10-alternate.iso with a mismatched kernel and initrd10:25
bobthemilDo you think that will present a major problem?10:25
tkstkawell it says no effects10:25
ActionParsniptkstka: ok cool so theres no gloss getting in the way10:26
tkstka:C but I see video running in youtube when I put my mouse over the icon at my panel10:26

vbgunzFirefox and Komodo look really broken so I am willing to settle on the Ubuntu Human theme... just the color of it is strikingly different than the rest of the desktop :(13:40
sigma_vbgunz: in systemsettings the appearance tab in gtk styles and fonts you can make gtk apps take on a kde4 style13:41
vbgunzsigma_: yes I've done that but for the Human theme (Gnome theme)... just the Gnome apps are taking on the colors of that theme...13:42

ubottuenvyng is an updated version of the *UNSUPPORTED* envy package. It is now part of the ubuntu universe repository (envyng-gtk OR envyng-qt) we suggest you use envyng if every other (official/supported) method fails! it can have various results from works, to fails!!!  if you want the very latest drivers from the manufacturer you use them at your own risk22:04
