_Groo_any kubuntu devs online?08:05
tkstkaI havent figured this thing.. Why not make couple of lines more and make the program save the pw...08:05
_Groo_i tried to activate the msn feature for the new kopete 4.2 beta 1.08:06
_Groo_so i recreated the kdenetwork from kubuntu-experimental with suport for libmsn 4.0 beta 108:06
_Groo_unfortunatelly although cmake did identify the lib and told it was going to be compiled and used, when i activated the new kopete..still no msn account :P08:07
_Groo_any ideas?08:07
rayneHello all.08:19
rayneI just downloaded Ubuntu for the first time! I'm loving it!08:19
_Groo_nice to ear that08:19
rayneHow is everyone doing tonight?08:20
_Groo_well here is already morning :D08:20
rayneYes, I'm being bad and staying up all night fiddling with Linux! I can't believe how well this older computer handels it!08:20
rayneI'm downloading all the upgrades and all the applications that seem relevant to me! It's taking a while but so far it seems worth it.08:21
rayneI'm off from work tomorrow.08:21
rayneSo I have all night to screw around!08:21
rayneNot many people talking for as many as there are in here.08:22
tkstkarayne you will hate it08:22
tkstkawhen simple things like saving a password08:22
tkstkais hard08:22
tkstka:c08:23
rayneOh, why?08:23
_Groo_tkstka: what are you talkking about?08:23
tkstkayou have to write a novel everytime you want something to work08:23
rayneSo far it seems alright. I'm a little more than a basic computer user. First time running Linux.08:23
_Groo_tkstka: can you be moe specific then that?08:23
tkstkaand I havent got my graphiccard to work..08:24
rayne*laughs* Well, that's part of the beauty of it. I think Linux users are a cut above! I mean, it takes brains to run Linux. Anyone can point and click.08:24
tkstkayes I installed the latest drivers08:24
tkstkathat were stable08:24
rayneI play World of Warcraft, and I found a way to install on here.08:24
tkstkabut still I have problems watching videos08:24
tkstkabecause the video blinks08:24
rayneHmm, have you tried downloading the latest version of Flash?08:24
_Groo_rayne: i play wow also.. just install wine and run it as usual.. works like a charm08:25
tkstkanot in a web08:25
tkstka...08:25
tkstkaI mean when I watch Avis08:25
_Groo_tkstka: whats your video card, ati?08:25
rayneWine, huh?08:25
tkstkax195008:25
tkstkawine works08:25
_Groo_tkstka: figures, the linux proprietary drivers for ati are kinda broken08:25
tkstkashould I use wine to run a chessprogram08:25
tkstka,,,08:25
rayneI'm downloading wine right now.08:26
_Groo_tkstka: in order for you to see the video WITHOUT blinking and use compiz (the 3d opengl desktop blink), change the output in the video player from xv to x11/xshm08:26
tkstkaSo I had to go to friends house to watch dr house08:26
tkstka_Groo_: :O08:26
rayneGroo, do you have AIM or anything?08:26
tkstkayou have the same problem?08:26
_Groo_ati give linux a bad name :( i have one also, but i can use the open source drivers which are MUCH better08:26
rayneI would like to add you as a friend. You know alot and I want to learn, if that doesn't bother you.08:26
_Groo_wine works with lots of win32 binaries08:27
_Groo_for more advanced stuff you can use virtualbox or vmware (even for 3d games)08:27
rayneOh, okay.08:27
_Groo_tkstka: i used to have.. i helped ati devs a lot with those crappy drivers08:27
rayneI just basically play WoW. ANd mess with computers, lol.08:28
tkstkaooh08:28
tkstkaso where do I change things08:28
tkstka?08:28
_Groo_rayne: retail?08:28
tkstkaI have vlc08:28
_Groo_tkstka: which video player are you using?08:28
avatarhi, there. posted the same message a few seconds ago in #ubuntu where I got the tip to ask over here. I use ubuntu, but konsole as terminal app.08:28
avatarhi there. after upgrading from 8.04 LTS to 8.10 I noticed three errors. a) gnome does not save sessions anymore (I learned that this is a gnome problem, not ubuntu specific), b) I got massive problems with hanging firefox as soon as flash was loaded (fixed by de-installing flashplugin-nonfree and installing latest flash 10 beta from adobe) and c) - the problem I was unable to fix until now - problems using konsole. I can type some text and hit return ...08:28
tkstkavlc08:28
tkstkaI have others08:28
avatar... - but konsole don't show any output. only after I press another key (return again) I see the output.08:28
_Groo_tkstka: ok, which ubuntu version?08:28
tkstkaKubuntu 8.1008:28
avatarany idea to fix c is appreciated :-)08:28
birnissonanyone knows if there'll be kde 4.2 beta 2 packages for intrepid?08:29

tkstkaIF I WERE A GIRL I HAD YOUR BABY08:31

keymonewithout losing data08:32
avatar_Groo_: thx for the hint. already tried to change font :-/08:32
_Groo_keymone: yes, there is08:32
_Groo_avatar: run konsole from inside a konsole and check the output error msgs08:32
keymone_Groo_: how?08:33
_Groo_tkstka: youll have to do that for every single video player (all have those options)...08:33
tkstkaok08:33
avatar_Groo_: good idea! (sad but true there are no error msgs while the problem persists in the new konsole)08:33
_Groo_tkstka: technically the x11 output is software only (the blink you  notice is the inability of the ati drivers to speak with the opengl compiz window manager), nividia fixed that for more then a year now08:34
_Groo_avatar: enhance the verbosity08:34
raynebrb08:34
tkstkaRAGE!!!08:35
tkstkawhy cant ati do it?08:35
tkstkawell there were new drivers08:35
tkstkaout but I tried to install them08:35
avatar_Groo_: I'm not sure how to do this. konsole --help does not include a verbose switch. I'll ask wise google.08:35
tkstkabut I failed08:35
_Groo_tkstka: fortunatelly the open source guys are almost completing all card support, so in 9.04 ati should be in good shape again.. i have an old 200m and it works like a charm..08:35
_Groo_tkstka: dont bother, its a problem with the PROPRIETARY ati drivers.. the open source ones works as advertised for ALL suported chips08:36
tkstkaand lost my graphic OS.. so I went to panic but then I remember that people used linux as shell and to irc.. So I remember irssi and then i got here and someone told me that there was program that made stable drivers downloadble08:36

Name1411Hello, I tried installing both Ubuntu and Kubuntu , and it will cause my router light to flash like it is in high traffic, yet I am not connected at all.  I did not have this problem with previous versions of Ubuntu or Kubuntu and it never made the router light flash like I had high traffic. And to end confusion I didn't have any downloads going, and was unable to connect to my modem, or any other "local" things along with the internet. I have a Dell Isp08:52
rayneAbout 229 USED.08:52
RandyCaliforniaeven my lifedrive can handle those videos08:52
RandyCaliforniarayne: maybe...08:53
avatar_Groo_: I downgraded my nvidia video driver from 177 to 173 - this needs further testing, but it seems that the problem vanished. thanks for your help.08:53

rayneI was rather fond of WIndows 2000 Professional, I have a system that I play WoW on and it runs very nicely.09:13

File formats are abstracted from its core, so it can process any file that contains WAVE data, compressed or not - provided there exists a format module to handle that particular file type. shntool has native support for .wav files. If you want it to work with other formats, you must have the appropriate helper pro12:23
EKrava - notably for Monkey's Audio, wavpack, LPAC, OptimFROG - are not (yet) available in Debian. With the helper programs mentioned above, shntool is able to convert files between all supported formats.12:23

Mamaroksorset: you can edit the id tags of your files with a tag editor, like easytag for example20:04
sorsetMamarok: why?20:04
Mamarokwell, it could be a tagging issue, so maybe looking at the tags of your files is not a bad idea20:05
sorsetMamarok: you mean cleaning tags?20:05
Mamaroksorset: be sure to use utf-8 encoding with easytag (can be done in the settings of the application)20:06

cArliToubuntu is great but i have the worst networking issues23:40
Dougwiserthe worst23:41
cArliToyeah23:41
Dougwiserlike what23:41
cArliToit works fine, but drops or freezes momentarily and often23:41
cArliToand its not wireless23:41
cArliTodirectly plugged into a router23:41
cArliTono such problems on any other OS & the same router23:42
cArliTostrange though, my icq client stays connected - just clicking a link or something like that the page will often not load all the way in one shot23:44
spawn57how do you know it's your network that's causing that?23:44
cArliToi dont23:44
cArliTobut assuming its something to do with the connection between ubuntu & my router23:44
cArliTosince others are fine23:44
spawn57hit ctrl+esc and see if there's anything else that's eating up cput cycles?23:45
cArliTonothing @ 100%23:46
cArliTo65% for mencoder, the rest are little23:46
Dougwiserhave you switched nics yet23:46
cArliToi havent23:46
cArliToits onboard, i can try another23:46
Dougwiserjust my first notion23:47
cArliTobooting back into gentoo or windoze works ok23:47
Dougwiserhmm23:47
cArliToso didnt give that a shot yet, but maybe a driver related to that onboard nic?23:47
Dougwiserdoes ubuntu call the device by the same name as gentoo and windows23:47
\KiraWhat is the partitioner option that says :Guided - use entire disk and set up encrypted LVM" mean? Whats LVM? This is during the installation23:47
cArliToyes eth0 right?23:47
Dougwiseryes23:47
DaSkreech!lvm23:48
DaSkreechah damn it23:48
ibuffyi just received a "text to speech software kit!"...but who cares, it has a microphone recorder.. however i can't get it to work :|23:48
cArliToi`ve tried & reverted lots of strange networking things from forums, etc - like adjusting window size, and so forth in sysctl23:48
DaSkreech\Kira: LVM is logical volume managment23:48
ibuffy!microphone23:48
ibuffy!recorder23:48
DaSkreechIt allows you to partition a drive then resize it later23:48
DaSkreechadding or removing space as needed. YO ucan also treat muliple paritions as a single parittion23:49
\KiraDaSkreech: what does it mean if its encrypted?23:49
DaSkreech\Kira: That people can't see it without permission23:49
bdizzlehi23:49
\KiraDaSkreech: So its not like disk encyption?23:49
bdizzlethis is more of a hardware question, but I'm hoping someone on here can help23:49
\KiraDaSkreech: such as LUKS23:49
DaSkreechIt is23:49
\Kirabdizzle: try ##hardware23:50
bdizzlethanks23:50
\KiraDaSkreech: so, it is? That means it encypted my entire drive so no-one can see it, and I have to enter a pass at start-up, right?23:50
DaSkreechyes23:50
\Kiraokay, cool23:50
\Kirais it as effecient as LUKS?23:51
DaSkreechOr to be more precise23:51
DaSkreechIt encrypts a voume and you have to put in a password to mount it23:51
DaSkreechIf you do it at startup thats up to you23:51
nachohi everyone23:51
