ballLoveGuru: is eth1 configured?03:54
LoveGuruball yea03:55
LoveGurui checked ifconfig eth1 and it shows there.03:55
LoveGuruball: i m trying to figure out since 4 hours .. where is the problem but still hard luck :<03:56
ballDoes it have an IP address?03:56
LoveGurueth1?03:57
LoveGuruyes eth1 have inet addr:172.16.148.12803:57
LoveGurui can ping my guest from host.03:57
ballbut not the other way around?03:58
LoveGuruball: sorry i won't understand what u saying.03:58
ballLoveGuru: you can ping it but you can't ssh to it?04:01
LoveGuruball: ya..04:01
ballHave you tried rebooting the virtual machine?04:01
LoveGuruball: yea several times i reboot the machine .. restart the networking devices..04:01
LoveGuruball: u know what.. everything works fine before i cann ssh/ftp/php/whatever everything were gud. but i just restart my router and its gonna be messy :<04:02
cfeddeI had a similar odd problem of that nature when upgrading from ESX 2.5 to 3.0 some of the ubuntu guests lost their eth0.  I think I worked aorund it using eth1 when I could not find a simple solution in a couple hours.04:04
`6ogcfedde: if the mac addresses changed, that would explain that04:06
LoveGurucfedde: i m trying everywhere since 4 hours :< still no luck04:06
`6ogi missed the description of the problem - whats going on?04:07
ballLoveGuru: I'm not familiar with virtual machines on PCs.  Is the router a physical thing, or virtual?04:07
cfedde`6og: that might be it. Now that I think of it the guest moved from one vmware host to another.  How interesting.04:08
LoveGuru`6og: somehow i can't ssh to my server.  im using VMware and Ubuntu as Guest OS, I just Reset my Router and after that eth0 just disappeard and eth1 appear there, i can't figure out what i did wrong :< before everything works fine. but now nothing works. `6ogLoveGuru: whats the host OS for the vmware?04:09
`6ogcfedde: that might do it (i dont know how vmware works past 'it puts stuff in files and virtualises them)04:09
LoveGuru`6og: host is Windows 2000 Server And Guest is Ubuntu Server04:09
`6ogLoveGuru: the bit that makes me wonder if we are missing info is "reset router" and "eth0 disapeared and eth1 appeared". did you make any changes to the client? is the router hardware or software?04:10
`6ogafk a few min04:11
LoveGuru`6og: thats the problem i didn't set/edit anything. i Just unplugged my Router Cable and put it back again. just reset the router .. after that my local IP also change, before my local IP was 192.168.0.100, now my ip is 192.168.0.101 but before i had eth0 but now i do have eth1 there with same eth0 conf. with same IP.04:12
ballLoveGuru: On IBM midrange boxes, there's a virtual LAN for the virtual machines to communicate.  Could eth1 be virtual?04:15
LoveGuruball: its Dell04:16
LoveGuruball: well i dont know about IBM04:16
LoveGuruball: u know what when i try to ssh with VMware Guest IP i can access to that system, but why i can't ssh with my dynamic host shellhell.dyndns.org04:17
ballRight, it's completely different software, but perhaps the same principle applies04:17
ballAh, dyndns is a different animal04:17
ballI don't think you mentioned that before04:18
LoveGuruNo sorry .. i didn't mention it.04:18
LoveGurubut. before i can access with my dyndns host.04:18
LoveGurubut now i can't/04:18
ballIs your router forwarding a port to the virtual server?04:18
LoveGuruball ya04:18
ballLoveGuru: do you run a DHCP server on the router?04:19
`6ogLoveGuru: do you have multiple thernet devices? did you plug into the correct one?04:19
ballI'm wondering if your virtual machine was handed a different IP address and your router's forwarding to nowhere04:20
ball(when your virtual machine's network interface changed)04:21
LoveGuruball: sorry i just lost my connection i didn't see ur msgs04:21

LoveGuruno im not running DHCP server. on the Router.04:23
LoveGuru`6og: no i do have just wilress04:23
LoveGuru*wireless04:23
ballLoveGuru: so you manually assign an IP address to each machine?04:24
LoveGuruball: no i don't assign any IP manually04:24
LoveGuruthats the router assign itself04:24
ballLoveGuru: then you're running DHCP04:26
`6ogi think hes trying to say his router handles it, he doesnt run a dhcpd04:27
LoveGuruya i m not running dhcp my self.04:27
ballLoveGuru: my guess is that your virtual machine's fake NIC changed, perhaps including its MAC address, or even its DHCP lease just expired.  Your VM asks for a new IP address, gets it, but your router is still forwarding the port to the old IP address... so you can't connect.04:27
LoveGurumy router handle it.04:27

alex_21Hey, yeterday when I'd scene the serer I was connecting to and had no LAMP on it, I realized it was not a server but a laptop I was connecting to. How could I be so blind, well, easy, I just be myself, but seriously, I was too tired to properly notice the proper hostname was wrong06:27
marshalli set up an ubuntu lamp server a while ago, ive been able to ssh in an get root privillages the whole time, but now when I try to sudo anything on my server, it says im not listed in sudoers. Ive tried using su and logging in as root on the physical box and neither method has worked. there doesnt seem to be any way to get root privillages right now for some reason. any suggestions?06:32
alex_21No idea, try "su -"06:35
ballmarshall: perhaps you've been rooted.06:36

nilsonIm trying to get a job in the IT department at my university, so I decided to redo my personal site to help flesh out my resume a little08:06
nilsonso Im doing a lot of dynamic content and want to make it pretty08:07
nilsonhmm08:08
alex_21Nelson, careful. You can loose accessibility, and no IT person will get a job like that. If you have accessibility in mind, you will more likely get the job based on that. I worked for a university08:08
nilsonI just mean a student job08:08
nilsonworkstudy08:08
nilsonnothing like professional IT08:08
alex_21Well, you may still get the job. You would be surprised at how may people in IT don't care about accessibility, but hving it really helps, in education08:09
nilsonI would imagie so08:09
nilsonmy personal site is really just intended for people I either know or chat with online, though08:09
alex_21So, even as a student job, I really recomend that.08:09
nilsonso its not a big concern for me in this context08:10
alex_21A few pinters. No flash, for not only access users, but others, or else have a text based copy as well. Also, avoid refreshing the page every five seconds or so. That drives screen readers nuts.08:10
alex_21And don't use AJAX unless you know what you are doing in regards to accessibility08:11
nilsonWell they hire inexperienced people generally. The simple fact that I know what CSS and HTML stand for and can author them by hand will put me ahead of a lot of others08:11
nilsonlet alone experience with unix server admin, etc etc08:11
nilsonand object oriented programming in C++ helps08:12
alex_21Good on you, that is a plus. I know html too. I don't bother with prittiness, so I don't usecss, but plain straight html is the best08:12
alex_21Best for Screen readers08:12
* nilson shrugs... here's the resume: http://alvania.net/portfolio/Resume.pdf08:12
alex_21And applying CSS correctly is very powerful for accessibility08:13
alex_21Oh, and provide html copies of PDFs. Another thing that drives me up the wall with screen readers08:14
nilsonDo you use a screen reader?08:14
nilsonOh - I see - you are blind.08:15
nilsonWell that certainly would hinder a lot of stuff on the computer08:15
nilsonI understand your affinity for accessibility now08:15

arvind_khadrihi, how do i create AD in ubuntu?15:52
Koonarvind_khadri: you can't "create AD"15:52
Koonif by that you mean create an Active Directory server15:52
arvind_khadriKoon: ya i mean that..15:52
arvind_khadriKoon: likewise-open is used for what?15:53
Koonto integrate into an existing AD.15:53
Koonto authenticate against AD users15:53
arvind_khadriKoon: ok so in Ubuntu AD cant be created at all??15:53
Koonarvind_khadri: Simulate an AD server is a Samba 4 feature15:54
Koon(not available yet)15:54
KoonYou can create a NT4 PDC15:54
arvind_khadriKoon: how do i so? simulation15:54
arvind_khadriKoon: is the simulation thing possible?15:55
Koonarvind_khadri: you mean how can I test likewise-open ?15:55
Koonarvind_khadri: install Microsoft Windows Server, deploy AD15:55
arvind_khadriKoon: no i mean whether Samba 4 simulation can be done or not?15:55
Koonarvind_khadri: it's probably possible to run something from Samba4 alpha code15:56
arvind_khadriKoon: oh ok...so when samba4 is finally released we can have a AD in Ubuntu too ?15:56
Koonarvind_khadri: yes.15:56
Koon(when samba 4 will be packaged into Ubuntu)15:57
Koonit's generally wise to let some time pass before integrating a completely-new Samba release15:57
maswanAIUI, there are also ways of installing an AD which in turn gets its data from a real kerberos or ldap thingie, but I'm not sure on how.15:57
maswanwe'll see, some of my collegues is probably going to install something like that in the coming months.15:58

killsaladhi all - i've got a question - how can i reduce virt memory usage - generally i compiled lighttpd and RSS in proc status tells me that lighttpd is using 1.5 MB, but free -m shows that after lighttpd have started  it comsumed 40 MB ?16:01
Koonzoopster: well, we'll be able to follow them, it will just take 3 years to catch up :)16:02

AlbertEinhi!, i installed postfix with amavisd with spamassassin acording this guide: https://help.ubuntu.com/8.10/serverguide/C/mail-filtering.html , everything works except that amavisd is not checking for spam, or at least it doesn't add the X-Span headers, any guide to troubleshoot this?16:13

Kapli...stuff any ideas?18:39
xenoterracide_asside from downloading from apache.org are there any packages for tomcat 6.0 for 8.0418:56
darkvertexxenoterracide_: try sudo apt-cache search tomcat on a terminal18:58
xenoterracide_darkvertex: latest seen is 5.518:58
darkvertexthen I guess you should compile your own. Better yet, you could create a deb package for others :)19:00
jmarsden|workxenoterracide_: There are tomcat6 packages in Intrepid 8.10.  But not in Hardy 8.04 as faras I know.19:01
xenoterracide_I can just unpack from apache's tarball no big deal19:02
jmarsden|workrmadison tomcat6 shows:      tomcat6 | 6.0.18-0ubuntu3 |      intrepid | source, all19:02
Kapliis there any way to check if my network interface card is working?19:04
zulyes ping it19:06
darkvertexKapli: sudo ifconfig?19:06
Kapliyes, and it shows no packages are being sent or recievd19:07
Kapliwhat does that mean19:07
xenoterracide_ip addr19:07
xenoterracide_does ip neigh show anything?19:08
Kapliit says19:08
Kapli192.168.10.1 dev eth0 FAILED19:08
Kaplithats bad isnt it19:08
xenoterracide_yeah that means that the arp faild19:09
Kapliwhich means? sorry you'll have to forgive my newbieness :P19:09
xenoterracide_because you're neighbors are listed by what could be reached via arp. arp is below tcp/ip19:09
xenoterracide_it can't be routed19:10
xenoterracide_so basically you don't have network19:10
Kapliso what could couse this and how can i fix it?19:10
Kapliyeah i figured as much that im not getting internet but i cant figure out why, it was working until power went out and when i turned it back on it didnt get internet anymore19:11
xenoterracide_Kapli: did you check your cables?19:12
Kapliyeah19:12
xenoterracide_power went out?19:12
Kapliyep19:12
Kaplior well the server was at least shut off19:12
Faust-Cthis is retarted, i cant install cause it cant find cdrom but its running from cdrom19:13
xenoterracide_Faust-C: lol19:13
xenoterracide_Kapli: hmm... router? modem?19:13
Faust-Cxenoterracide_, i feel like wtf19:13
Kaplirest of the house is getting inet by wireless so i cant figure it out19:13
Kaplicable is in19:14
xenoterracide_does the light on your nick and on the router blink?19:14
Kaplitho i do have 2 places to put it in the server, i have a network card and the intergrated one19:14
Kapliim not exactly sure which one i used and worked19:14
Kapliif i put it in the network card the network card shows a green light19:15
Kaplibut the intergrated one doesnt19:15
Kaplihm yes i believe it used to light orange19:15
Kapliwhen i had it in the intergrated one, but theres no light now19:15
xenoterracide_but it doesn't blink...19:16
Kaplino theres no blinking19:16
Kaplithe other network card blinks green if i put the cable there19:16
xenoterracide_ubuntu detects cable plugins and tries to get an IP right normally right? (I'm not normally a ubuntu user)19:16
xenoterracide_so your integrated doesn't blink but the nic does19:16
xenoterracide_well I'd use the nic19:17
Kaplibut if i put the cable there19:17
xenoterracide_also check the router to see if that router port blinks19:17
Kaplii still dont get inet so what do i do to like change it19:17
xenoterracide_dhcp?19:18
xenoterracide_basically blinking lights on both ends means they are attempting to talk19:18
Kapliwait brb ill check if the router blinks19:19
xenoterracide_you're looking for rapidly blinking ones19:19
Kapliah i have some modem thing like for phone tv and inet so theres no light for the inet on this modem thing19:20
Kaplianyway im pretty sure it doesnt have anything to do with the router19:20
xenoterracide_no light? or it doesn't light up19:20
Kaplitheres no like light thingie for the pc19:21
Kaplitheres only like power, link and 2 phone lights19:21
xenoterracide_odd19:21
Kapliye i know, well ye if i put the cable in the nic19:21
Kaplihow do i configure it so it uses it as default19:21
xenoterracide_uses what?19:22
Kapliand so it works19:22
Kaplii dont know i mean if i put the cable in the nic now and type ifconfig19:22
xenoterracide_well I'm kinda at a loss for configuring this on ubuntu, I thought it was just supposed to work ;P19:22
xenoterracide_but maybe it doesn't on server19:23
Kapliisnt it like19:23
Kaplieht0 is the intergrated one19:23
xenoterracide_probably /etc/init.d/networking restart19:23
xenoterracide_or something19:23
Kaplibtw now if i type ip neigh it says eht0 incomplete so that must be bcuz the cable isnt in19:24
xenoterracide_oh and that has to be run asroot19:24
xenoterracide_Kapli: could be, I'm not an expert on the 'ip' command19:24
xenoterracide_all I know is it makes ifconfig and the like look like toys19:24
Kaplihm ok so i plugged the cable and typed ifconfig but only eth0 shows up19:25
Deepsyou have 2 nics?19:25
Kapliisnt the nic supposed to be eth119:25
Kaplii have 1 nic and the intergrated one19:25
Kapliso thats 2 i guess19:25
Deepssudo nano /etc/network/interfaces19:25
Kapliah ye that file i have changed19:25
Kaplito set a static ip for eth019:26
Deepsyou need to define the configuration for an interface19:26
Deepsif you want aa static ip, dhcp ip, whatever, you need to configure it in there19:26
Kapliah, cuz theres no stuff there for eth119:26
Kaplibut yeah eht0 must be the intergrated one and eth1 is the nic so if i copy the stuff about eth0 and just paste and change to eth1 instead it should work right?19:27
Kapliand set auto eth1 isntead of auto eth019:27
Kapliill try that19:27
Deepsif thats what you want to do, yep19:27
Deepsif you want eth1 to be configured in the same way eth0 was19:27
Kaplii guess i can just change the eth0 to eth1 as i wont be using eth0 then anymore19:28
ScottK-laptopsnasni19:29
Kaplihm, well i did that and saved the file, then rebooted the server and checked ifconfig at least it shows packages are being sent n stuff19:30
Kapliyes, pinging works :D19:30
Kaplinow to see if i can connect to it from the outside19:30
Kaplisucess on the local network :D can anyone check http://last-wish.org and see if anything turns up?19:31
xenoterracide_it works19:32
Kapliwoohoo :D19:33
Kapligreat, so i guess i can conclude that the intergrated one is broken but the other one works? :D19:33
Kaplibtw theres nothing else i have to configure like change from eth0 to eth1 right19:34
darkvertexKapli: you could disable the integrated one through BIOS setup and put a sticky tape over the port to prevent future confusions. just my 2 cents ...19:37
Kapliye ill do that19:42
Kapliits probably broken19:42
Kapliand when intergrated stuff starts getting broken i guess it wont be long until it goes to sleep, its like 8 years old lol19:42
Kaplianyway thanks so much for help i g2g now laters :)19:43

blueyedcan you check your "uname -a", if you have 2.6.24-22-*, in case you have rebooted after the latest hardy update?23:00
