linux29684stdin: for example: it resolves google, but not ubuntu.com or clusty (univ dns servers)04:30
stdinas far as I know, if you're getting the DNS from it, the network must have been connected (or attempted to connect). so I think it's an issue with Network Manager04:31
linux29684stdin: i strongly agree04:32
linux29684stdin: but i don't know how to get enough details to report it as a bug04:32
stdinI'm just trying to figure out where it stores the information of what to connect to04:32
linux29684stdin: and traceroutes do not go through the vpn unless i connect04:32
jmichaelxthere have been several people in here the last week or so complaining about similar DNS issues04:33
linux29684it might have been me, i have had this problem for a while04:33
linux29684and no one anywhere knows how to fix it04:34
linux29684i am not sure if its the ubuntu network manager or the kubuntu vpn gui04:34
linux29684(kvpnc)04:34
jmichaelxwere you using different nicknames?04:34
linux29684no, this same one04:34
jmichaelxi don't think it was you then.04:34
linux29684i wonder why i can't simply reinstall the network component of ubuntu?04:36
scott97283429871can anyone give me a hand with my video driver04:36
Dr_willisI dont mess with ati much any more.. so cant help04:37
scott97283429871well, its not even that so much anymore04:37
jmichaelxi had tried to log in to the VPN at the campus where i take classes using network manager, and got nowhere. i don't know whether that is my fault, or an issue with network manager. i eventually started using a bash script provided by the school to connect, which is working just fine.04:37
linux29684stdin: what if i add a chmod 444 /etc/resolv.conf to a script before most programs startup?04:37
linux29684jmichaelx: kvpnc works fine for vpn connection04:38
scott97283429871i had everything working, i downloaded envyng, and that dl'ed the driver for me04:38
stdinlinux29684: it could work, I've never tried it04:38
scott97283429871and it was going good.  but i have two monitors so i wanted to set them both up.04:38
jmichaelxlinux29684: that is good to know04:38
scott97283429871i went into displayconfig-gtk, and enabled my second monitor and said extend the desktop04:38
linux29684stdin: do you know the script to edit with the chmod 444 /etc/resolv.conf?04:38
scott97283429871and it said i had to restart.  so when i restarted, now i cant find a driver that wil work.  everythiing i try .   it always ends up havingg to go into safe graphics mode04:39
scott97283429871how can i even like revert to the very origional driver?04:40
linux29684stdin: or better yet, can i search inside files for the actual dns ip that it keeps changing it to to see where it originates from?04:40

linux29684it is supposed to change that name after it quits / disconnects04:49
scott97283429871so i went into displayconfig, and said to enable my second monitor and extend the desktop04:49
jmichaelxscott97283429871: ahh, i have very little experience with using two monitors on one system.04:49

Dr_willissadly ATI and NVIDIA both give Linux the short end of the stuck at imes.04:59
Dr_willisFor a long tiem for my ati cards i just used the ATI drivers, not the fglrx one04:59
scott97283429871i downloaded envyNG04:59
jmichaelxDr_willis: that's for sure04:59
scott97283429871and said automatically download approperate driver04:59
Eruaranhello04:59
scott97283429871and it was working awesome04:59

szrhawaiithose might work05:00
Dr_willisso it was working then is stopped?  stopped when?05:00
jmichaelxscott97283429871: i believe that envy should also allow you to un-install the driver05:00
scott97283429871well the problem with the driver from ATI05:00
Dr_willisIf you ued envyng - every time the kernel gets updates.. you may need to rerun envyng05:00
scott97283429871is it had dependencies like XFree86-mesa something05:00
scott97283429871and i couldnt find anywhere to get those05:00
EruaranI tried to upgrade to KDE 4.2 beta 1 and screwed up my KDE install... can anyone tell me the best way of restoring things back to the way they were ?05:00
jmichaelxyeah, good point05:00
scott97283429871so thats why i was going with envy05:01
Dr_willisEruaran,  You have screwed it up? or is this theroet0cal :)05:01
jmichaelxscott97283429871: try using envy to remove your driver05:01
jmichaelxand then re-install it05:01
scott97283429871okay05:01
scott97283429871you wouldnt happen to have any idea how to go about that? :D05:02
jmichaelxwell, run the envy GUI, to start with, and see if it gives you that option05:02
Dr_willisrerun envyng :)05:02

scott97283429871and this is where I'm at now05:03
jmichaelxbigdaddy: visit this site, and follow the instructions it gives you for hardy: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu05:04
scott97283429871if i do locate envy, this is the only thing i get. envy24_control.desktop.05:04
jmichaelxscott97283429871: 'X' is just your graphical display05:04
scott97283429871but if i run that it says access denied or something like that05:04
scott97283429871Oh, yeah I do have a gui05:05
jmichaelxscott97283429871: hmm05:05

scott97283429871what is kdesudo05:07
jmichaelxscott97283429871: just copy and paste 'kdesudo envyng'05:07
scott97283429871is that like root lvl access?05:07
jmichaelxbigdaddy: it's no problem05:07
jmichaelxscott97283429871: if that is what envyng is called, yes. it should ask for your password, and open the GUI for envy05:08
scott97283429871okay05:08
scott97283429871yes i have it up now05:08
scott97283429871oh, i can unistall the ati driver here05:09
scott97283429871try that yes?05:09
jmichaelxscott97283429871: try removing the driver you have first05:10
scott97283429871ok i removed it, and i have to restart.  or should i try to install the new one w/o restarting?05:10
jmichaelxi think it gives that option05:10
jmichaelxno, go ahead no and install the ati driver05:10
jmichaelxnow*05:10
scott97283429871okay05:10

scott97283429871umm 8.04?05:11
jmichaelxok, that is hardy. had you tried any other way to install your driver before you used envy?05:12
scott97283429871ok.  now i have to restart05:12
scott97283429871yes, I was going to use the driver i downloaded from ATI.com.  but i was reading the how to05:12
scott97283429871and it said i had to install XFree86-mesa-lib or something.  but I could't find that anywhere05:13
jmichaelxscott97283429871: OK, it is hard for me to say, but i think it is very possible you would not have even had to use envy... but now that we have taken this route, reboot and see what we have05:13
scott97283429871okay, brb05:13
jmichaelxscott97283429871: one sec05:14
jmichaelxwell, i hope he has X working when he logs back in05:14
linux29684stdin: is there anything I should add to reporting the bug besides the kvpnc.log and resolv.conf?05:16
stdinlinux29684: just what version of ubuntu and the software you're using05:17
scott97283429871no luck05:18
scott97283429871still safe graphics05:18
linux29684ok, inserted both of those already05:18
linux29684i hope the devs will have a field day with it05:18
scott97283429871you said something about purging flgrx??05:19
jmichaelxscott97283429871: have you tried going into your system settings where you (sometimes) have the option of choosing which driver you want to use?05:20
scott97283429871no05:21
scott97283429871where do i go about doing that?05:21
jmichaelxscott97283429871: click on your start button, and select 'system settings'05:21
jmichaelxthe select 'display'05:22
jmichaelxthen*05:22
scott97283429871i dont have a system settings button05:22
jmichaelxscott97283429871: it will likely be at the very bottom of your menu.... you are using KDE, correct?05:23
scott97283429871again, not sure what KDE is.  its Ubuntu 8.0405:23
jmichaelxyou're  not using Kubuntu?05:24
scott97283429871no im using ubuntu05:25
scott97283429871ohh, i get it wrong room05:25
jmichaelxahh. well, this room is the support channel for Kubuntu. much is the same, but the GUI is different. ubuntu uses the Gnome desktop environment.. and i am not nearly as familiar with Gnome as i am with KDE05:26
scott97283429871oh, i c05:26
scott97283429871i just need to find like a control pannel in windows right?05:26
jmichaelxscott97283429871: on the bar (called a 'panel') at the top of your screen, there should be a selection that says something like 'system' or something...05:27
jmichaelxscott97283429871: yeah, same idea05:27
scott97283429871yeah05:28
scott97283429871i have like system>preferences, and administration05:28
jmichaelxok, click 'system'... i think you should find 'display'or something similar under preferences05:28
scott97283429871i can go to screen resolution05:29
scott97283429871i can get to something called displayconfig05:29
scott97283429871i would assume thats probably like what your talking about05:30
scott97283429871thats where i set the drivers i want and everything05:30
jmichaelxscott97283429871: well, somewhere in there, you should find something that allows you to select which driver you want to use05:30
scott97283429871yes05:30
jmichaelxok, try that....05:30
scott97283429871yeah05:30
jmichaelxyou want to select fglrx, if it is listed05:30
scott97283429871ive been here before05:30
master_What version of kubuntu has kde 4?05:31
scott97283429871i can select fglrx, or i can go to choose driver by model and do ati radeon(fglrx)05:31
jmichaelxmaster_: you can run KDE4 in 8.04, as an option, and KDE4 is the default in 8.1005:31
master_ok... downloading 8.10 now..05:33
jmichaelxscott97283429871: hmm....i am not sure which to tell you to select. i think if you had gone to this at the beginning, it would likely have installed the driver for you. since you already have envy's driver, i am thinking you may just need to select 'fglrx'05:33
scott97283429871okay ill try that05:33
scott97283429871should i log out and back in or restart?05:34
jmichaelxscott97283429871: in this whole process, you could lose your graphical display. do you have a way of coming back in here if that happens?05:34
scott97283429871no.  but everytime i mess it up it automaticallly goes into safe graphics mode if i cant boot normally05:35
jmichaelxok, well that is a good deal05:35
scott97283429871thats actually how im here now.  it just used a generic driver i suppose05:35
jmichaelxyes... you could just retsart X, but why don't you just go ahead and reboot05:35
scott97283429871hey, so this is kinda stupid questin, but how do i respond to you instead of the whole room?05:35
scott97283429871like when you say stuff to me its yellow05:36
scott97283429871not exactly relevent to teh discussion, but im curious05:36

scott97283429871jmichaelx: is there someway to like completely reset my Xserver or something05:40
jmichaelxscott97283429871: in this case, i am afraid i don't know what to tell you05:40
scott97283429871hmm05:40
jmichaelxscott97283429871: you might try asking in #ubuntu05:41
jmichaelxunless someone else in here has more of a clue than i have05:41
DerathQuestion: how do I create shortcuts on the desktop? I liked having a shortcut to /home/user and /home/user/Documents?05:41
scott97283429871okay, i suppose ill do that.  would my xorg.conf offer any help?05:41
jmichaelxscott97283429871: to be honest Xorg has changed so much the last year or so, that i am a bit lost anymore. a year ago, i think i could have told you exactly what to do, but not anymore05:42
scott97283429871oh, i see.  are there any other files relevent to my display?05:43
jmichaelxscott97283429871: as a last ditch effort, you could try entering 'gksudo displayconfig-gtk' in a terminal, and trying selecting yourdriver one more time.05:44
scott97283429871jmichaelx: ok, Ill try that.  thank you so much for your help.05:45
jmichaelxnp05:45
scott97283429871jmichaelx: ok, so i have a new development05:47
jmichaelxwhat is that?05:47
scott97283429871jmichaelx: see if you can wrap your head around this.  i went back into my displayconfig, and changed my default screen from screen 1 to screen 2.  then i loged off and back on.05:48
scott97283429871and now one monitor is like normal.  but the other one is off05:48
jmichaelxinteresting05:48
scott97283429871yeah05:49
jmichaelxdid you have both going before?05:49
jmichaelxand is the one that is on using fglrx now?05:49
scott97283429871now if i go back into screen resolution, both displays are recognized and i can change the resolution on my main one05:49
scott97283429871yes, everything was working, well infact.  but i wanted to extend my desktop to the second screen and thats when things went bad05:50
scott97283429871jmichaelx: what do you think about trying to install the driver from envy again?05:50
jmichaelxscott97283429871: i would REALLY recommend that you poke around through the forums on this issue, as well as google05:50
jmichaelxscott97283429871: do you think you are using fglrx now?05:51
scott97283429871okay.  Ive been looking around and i wasnt really able to find anything thing that was like an answer all.  yeah, my driver is ATI Radeion (fglrx)05:51
jmichaelxok,  we have made progress then. what you need to do is enter 'radeon 9600 dual monitors hardy' or something like that in the forums or in google and see if you can't find specific instructions for setting this up using your card05:53
scott97283429871jmichaelx: okay, i will definently try that.  thank you so much05:53
jmichaelxyou're welcome, although i have not really helped you much in achieving your goal... but i am sure there is a way to do this05:54

jmichaelxDerath: i am going to bed soon, but i can try to help for a few more minutes yet05:56
DerathWell, I was just hoping to create two shortcuts on the desktop, one for my home dir, and the other for my doc dir.... is that possible on kde4?05:57
jmichaelxDerath: you should be able to do that in folder view in KDE4.1...05:58
Derathfolder view?05:58
jmichaelx!folder view05:58
ubottuSorry, I don't know anything about folder view05:58
jmichaelxhmm05:59
jmichaelxDerath: the desktop in KDE4 is set up a bit differently than it was in KDE305:59
Dr_willisthats an UNDERSTATEMENT :)05:59
Derathso I've noticed, not bad though, but lack of shortcuts on the desktop has been awkward06:00
Dr_willis'Down with Cluttered Desktops!' :)06:00
jmichaelxwhen you first logged in to KDE4, you should have seen a transparent box on your desktop, which is kind of a window into your ~/Desktop directory06:00
jmichaelxDr_willis: yeah, it really was an understatement06:01
Derathlol mine's not cluttered, I just need 3-4 shortcuts/links to make life easier with commonly used apps :)06:01
* Derath upgraded from 8.04 w/ kde3 to 8.10 w/ kde406:01
Derathnot really by choice either06:01
Dr_willisPut launchers on the panel :)06:01
jmichaelxDerath: you would also have an option to put launchers in your panel06:02
jmichaelxok jinks06:02
Dr_willisYou cant just drag/drop menu items from the menu to the Panel any more.. :( or at least you couldent last i tried.. it may be doable now06:02
DerathI saw the launchers, and from what I could tell, I either get the old style k menu, or the suse-like kicker menu,06:03
jmichaelxwell, you could configure 2 different quick access panel icons06:03
Derathwillis: did that for my app shortcuts, but hard to do with shortcuts to urls/directories06:03
Derathwillis: I'd like to have a shortcut to /home and /home/documents06:04
jmichaelxDerath: you could add 2 quick access widgets to your panel, and link one to your ~/Desktop and one to your ~/Documents06:04
Derathhmm I guess I could get used to that instead06:05
mds58just out of curiosity what are the min. requirements for kubuntu8.1006:06

benbloomok-- I have to say this. and I know it's pointless to even say and may even be offtopic, but KDE4 is AWEFULL!! it seems to combine all the things that are suck about both Windows and OSX (esp. lack of flexibility and intuitive use) without being familiar enough to be easily adopted by someone who has worked with any WM or OS. Why is Ubuntu not supporting KDE3 in intrepid. and what has happened to the development of KDE that it has21:27
