zoredacheretour: you will be more likely to get a better responce if you ask a question instead if simply stating what you are interested.  You should also consider looking in other channels.  mkudfs isn't really something that is going to be distro-specific00:05
retourzoredache: mkudffs is formating 4.7GB disk into 1.2GB beyond that - everything works00:19

generalsnuswe have some problems installing skolelinux here, we are installing "ftp.skolelinux.org/cd-lenny-test-dvd/debian-edu-amd64-i386-DVD-1.iso" and we are behind a proxy, but wehen the install gets to "installing applications" it just ends..with no obvious error.. im guessing it tries to connect to the net.. but it has no proxy settings yet.. what can we do?12:03

izinucsI just added a second panel to the desktop along with some items on the panel.  Panel 1 allows me to move items on it to the position I want. Panel 2 seems to left justify anything I add.. how do I fix this?15:21
izinucsdid I actually post??? no time stamp and an extra space between my post and the last message.. weird15:22
ballizinucs: yes, you asked about moving items on a panel15:23
ball...if nobody here knows, there's also #xfce15:23

tomwroksomehow the fontsize in my XFCE depends on the resolution i have set when logging in. when i increase the desktop resolution the font is smaller than when i login again with the same resolution. i guess that is some kind of feature. does anybody know what i mean/how i can turn this off?17:49
knomewell for me it sounds it's a bug.17:50
Demioshmm having a problem configuring my sudoers19:21
Demiosi have "myusername ALL=(ALL)19:21
Demios"19:21
Demiostrying to make it19:22
Demiosi have "myusername ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: /usr/bin/somedirectory"19:22
Demiosbut everything from NOPASSWD on is in white and not color coded, that can't be right. And when I try to write out, it tells me there is an error on said line19:23
ig0r1Hello everybody!19:38
ig0r1does anybody know how can I check if my videocard drivers are installed in xubuntu 8.10 ?19:40
AizawaAlright, this might not be entirely on-topic and the answer might be obvious, but is there some way to make a new, empty partition from a full install of linux?19:46
AizawaLike I have one partition now, that fills up my entire hard drive. I would like to make a new partition so I can install another OS on it.19:48
ConstrabusDoes the 8.10 xubuntu install CD's kernel have etx4 support?20:11
Constrabusext4**20:11
Odd-rationalei think so, i'm not sure, though. see if it one of the options...20:11
charlie-tcaAizawa: Yes, there is a way. Use a livecd. At the desktop, choose Applications -> System -> Partition Editor20:20
charlie-tcaMake sure no partitions are mounted, then resize the partition and create another one20:20
AizawaOh, alright20:25
zoredacheyou can look in /proc/filesystems to see if the kernel supports ext4, that doesn't mean all the ext4 tools would be installed though20:30
AizawaI'm really not an advanced user >.>20:31
AizawaI'll go for the easy way20:31
AizawaThanks guys20:31
roosterizerHey gang!20:33
roosterizerI think my system is in big trouble, looking for some assistance :S20:33
roosterizerFew days ago, there was this update regarding some HAL-package (which I assume is the culprit here) and since that update, I'm unable to give any peripheral input to X (or something)20:35
roosterizerI can't type anything at GDM login screen but the ctrl, caps keys etc still work20:35
roosterizerSo I go Ctrl+Alt+F1 and log in that way, which works, then kill GDM, run 'startx' and I get to my desktop, but again. No input is registered. Not the touchpad either (laptop)20:36
roosterizerAnybody present?20:54
gabkdllyhi20:54
roosterizerhey!20:54
roosterizerAre you here for help as well as I am or do you think you could help me? :)20:55
gabkdllyroosterizer: pretty much all of the X.org configuration has been moved to HAL recently20:55
roosterizerok20:56
roosterizerso if HAL screws up, X is screwed. :-|20:56
gabkdllyroosterizer: still, you probably can configure your keyboard and mouse in the xorg.conf manually20:56
gabkdllypretty much20:56
roosterizeroh alright! that's good news20:57
gabkdllyif you still have an old xorg.conf from a previous install laying around, you might just try that20:57
roosterizerhm. I'll see what I can find...20:58
roosterizerDang. Afraid there's no such file in sight (/etc/X11/ right?)20:58
gabkdllyyes20:59
gabkdlly!xorg20:59
ubottuThe X Window System is the part of your system that's responsible for graphical output. To restart your X, type « sudo /etc/init.d/?dm restart » in a console - To fix screen resolution or other X problems: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/Resolution20:59
gabkdllythat link might have something to help you20:59
roosterizerThanks, I'll check it right away! I hope it will render well in elinks. :D...21:00
gabkdllyit really sounds like you might have found a bug, and it is probably worth reporting on launchpad21:04
roosterizeryeah, it feels like it's just big fat regression21:05
roosterizer"just a"21:05
roosterizerI might just go there and see if I can file a bug with a text-based browser. :)21:06
roosterizerBut if it's a bug, I really hope there will be a fixing upgrade soon, because as it is now, I have to hardcore-terminal this baby completely :)21:07
gabkdllythe old way of configuring your xorg.conf was with dpkg-reconfigure21:08
gabkdllybut I don't know what that will do now that HAL is all up in there21:08
roosterizerI guess I could try?21:09
roosterizerIs the input trivial or? Something like "dpkg-reconfigure xorg"?21:09
gabkdllydpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg21:10
gabkdllyI think that is what you want21:10
gabkdllyif I remember correctly21:10
charlie-tcaroosterizer: you might want to look here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Resolution21:11
roosterizeralrighty21:11
gabkdllysorry, I can't seem to find a better link :(21:12
gabkdllythere must be some documentation out there somewhere on how to manually configure X post-HAL21:12
roosterizerI just ran dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and restarted GDM but there wasn't much change to the behavior (none at all aamof :)21:15
Azaghi21:15
Azagxubuntu use compiz or metacity?21:15
charlie-tcaAzag: I think metacity by default, compiz if you install it21:16
Azagok21:16
roosterizercharlie-tca: I didn't read the whole page there but, I'm not having problems with the resolution; I cannot input anything using the keyboard or the mouse in X21:16
charlie-tcaHave you tried the debugging procedures?21:17
charlie-tcahttps://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures21:18
roosterizerI don't know of any :-/21:18
charlie-tcathe link has them, Hardware21:18
roosterizeralrighty21:18
roosterizercharlie-tca: Oh, so all that info is on how to file bugs? :)21:32
roosterizergabkdlly & charlie-tca: I have to get outta here, but thanks guys, for all the help. I appreciate it a lot :) Peace out!21:41
gabkdllycheers21:42
gabkdllyyou might also try the forum21:42
roosterizerYeah I'm gonna try there once I get to a decent GUI so I can run a decent browser ;)21:42
charlie-tcaroosterizer: yes, that is for filing the bug; also works to try to fix things.21:43
roosterizerOkie doke! Gonna look more into that. Thanks again! Take care guys =)21:44
charlie-tcaYou´re welcome. I´m glad I could help. Good luck21:44
roosterizer:) thanks21:44
Demiosdammit21:53
Demiosi'm not sure what the heck is up with my burner21:53
Demiosit wont burn21:53
Demiosactualy brasero says every disk i put in has 0bytes free21:54
charlie-tcaDemios: will it play cd's? or will it read any that were burned before?21:55
Demioslets check21:55
Demiosfailed to open21:55
charlie-tcaThe cd or the drive drawer?21:56
Demiosmount: block device /dev/scd0 is write-protected, mounting read-only21:56
Demiosmount: /dev/scd0 already mounted or /media/cdrom0 busy21:56
Demiosmount: according to mtab, /dev/scd0 is already mounted on /media/cdrom0.21:56
DemiosFailed to open directory "cdrom0".21:57
DemiosPermission denied.21:57
charlie-tcauh-h, right-click, unmount?21:57
Demiosonly options are21:58
Demiosmount (grayed out) and eject21:58
charlie-tcatry eject, then.21:58
charlie-tcaProbably only opens the drawer, though21:59
charlie-tcaMaybe time for a reboot, and see if that helps. I don´t really know.21:59
charlie-tcaHoping for someone else to jump in here, now22:00
Demiosalready rebooted a few times22:00
Demiosand the tray opens up22:00
Demioswhen i select eject22:00
charlie-tcaWell, it can't burn if it is always busy. I've exhausted my knowledge, though22:01
gabkdllyDemios: I have also encountered this problem22:06
gabkdllyusing brasero22:07
Demiosit wont burn audio cds either22:07
Demioslike it burns them, then it fails22:07
Demioswasting a whole cd22:07
roberhi22:10
gabkdllyDemios: you don't happen to have a VIA chipset on your IDE controller?22:10
charlie-tcahi rober22:11
roberdoes anyone know how to make the "Places" menu show all removable drives (just like the gtk+ open dialog) ? It just shows home, trash, desktop and filesystem22:11
Demiosnot to my knowledge, and this is a recent thing22:11
Demiosmight have been since around the time i installed gmount-iso22:12
gabkdllyDemios: I have only tried to burn once since my move to intrepid22:12
Demiosit's been since hardy, but it's actually inconvinient now that i actually need to burn isos22:12
gabkdllyrober: there is a panel button that allows you to mount attached devices22:13
gabkdllyrober: for example fd022:13
robergabkdlly,  yeah i know but in ubuntu (not xubuntu) the places menu shows all available devices (just like the gtk open dialog)22:13
gabkdllyDemios: to narrow it down you might try burning with another app22:13
Demiosevery other app fails22:14
Demioscds dont even mount properly to be read22:14
phix:/22:14
gabkdllyrober: yes, ubuntu and xubuntu differ in this respect.  Might be worth suggesting to the devs that you want this functionality in the "plaices" button22:14
gabkdllyDemios: oh, that differs from my experience, I have been able to mount cds and dvds22:15
robergabkdlly, furthermore if you click on properties in the "places" menu you see there is an option called "Show removable media" so i guess it might be a bug22:16
gabkdllyDemios: I was hoping it would be as simple as filing a bug with brasero :(22:16
gabkdllyrober: true true22:17
phixcan I ask questions regarding sound problems here? or is it out of scope?22:17
gabkdllyphix: if you are having sound problems while running xubuntu22:17
gabkdllyrober: although, the developers might have their reasons for not including devices that are not even attached22:19
phixgabkdlly: there is still there regardless if I type in sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop or not22:19
phixthe sounds problem still exist even :)22:19
gabkdllyphix: describe your problems please22:19
phixno sound, 01:00.1 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc HD48x0 audio22:21
roberanother question: does anyone know how to automount a partition at boot time ? like in all other distros (i.e adding the corresponding line in /etc/fstab) ?22:21
phixrober: add it in fstab22:21
roberok22:21
gabkdllyphix: did you check the mixer levels? with alsamixer22:21
phixalsamixer22:22
phixNo mixer elems found22:22
phixI tried to use alsaconf but it doesn't exist in alsa-base or alsa-util22:22
roberphix, do you know what partition type fuseblk is ? ubuntu automounts my ntfs win partition as fuseblk...22:24
gabkdllyphix: you might check the logs to see what the kernel has to say. dmesg or /var/log/22:25
gabkdllyphix: or google your hardware22:26
gabkdllyI am going to sleep now.  Bye people22:26
zoredacherober: fuseblk is almost certainly related to fuse.  I would guess your filesystem is ntfs...22:26
phixrober: ntfs-3g22:27
phixgabkdlly: I have been googling, no success22:27
phixwhich is why I came here as a last resource22:28
phixnice gabkdlly22:28
phixzoredache: and also since rober said it was his windows NTFS partition :) that gave it away for me :P22:29
zoredachethere is always a chance he is doing something really obscure...22:29
zoredachebut I agree that ntfs is probably the answer22:30
roberphix: so the type of partition i have to add in /etc/fstab is fuseblk and not ntfs right ?22:32
phixrober: incorrect22:33
roberphix: then ?22:33
phixrober: the correct answer was ntfs-3g22:33
roberoh22:33
phixas I posted above22:33
zoredacheyou will also probably need mount options to force a uid/gid mask for the filesystem22:35
roberzoredache, in automatic mode it is mount with the following options: rw,nosuid,nodev,allow_other,blksize=409622:35
zoredacheyes, but it is mounted under your account usually22:36
zoredacheif you are mounting under fstab, it is mounting as root22:36
roberi see22:38
roberthank you phix, zoredache. Goodbye!22:40
