heapypeople of xubuntu, i have finially got my system stable, working sweet man im so chuffed :D00:28
Odd-rationalegreat!00:29
Odd-rationale!yay00:29
ubottuGlad you made it! :-)00:29
heapyhah.00:29
heapyi have sound! and dvd! and internet wireless!!00:30
heapythis is my first experience of linux, its quality isn't it00:30
Odd-rationaleme too! :P00:30
heapyand this amarok program is awesome00:30
Odd-rationaleamarok 2?00:31
heapymm00:32
heapyoh man, it says KDE?!!!00:32
Odd-rationaleyeah, amarok is normally considered an kde app... although kde apps works just fine in xubuntu... or all ubuntu's for that matter...00:33
heapyohh thats a relief00:33
heapyit says version 3.5.10 amarok00:34
Odd-rationalethe only thing is that installing kde apps in a non-kde environment (xfce, gnome, etc) results in pulling lots of libs that is only used by the kde app...00:34
Odd-rationaleand also that kde app has to start the extra kde stuff ...00:35
Odd-rationaleheapy: amarok 2 just got released like a week ago... it will probably be in the next version of ubuntu...00:36
heapyhay as long as it works im not fussed m8, i have had real bad times these last 3 days setting up my laptop on ubuntu, have settled on xubuntu hardy00:36
heapywhy the hell do i have 3.5.10 then? is version 2 the stable one or somthing?00:37
heapyhang on...00:37
heapy1.4.9.1 version00:37
heapyi was getting mixed up00:37
Odd-rationale3.5.10 is probably your kde version...00:38
Odd-rationalethe last frontier of kde3, and (imho) the best of kde...00:38
heapyi just dloaded it from add/remove programs00:39
Odd-rationalei got kinda turned off by kde4...00:39
Odd-rationalebut, that's just me...00:39
heapyi have never used it m800:39
heapyim quite impressed by ubuntu when its stable like this,00:40
heapyim enjoying it00:40
heapyhay , i done something that took me by suprise earlier... i just moved the terminal window to read some commands from a webpage, then it seem'd to disapear into the next screen! dead strange , but kinda cool00:41
heapyand now ctrl alt ( left and right ) flicks between them,, well smart00:42
Odd-rationaleyeah. workspaces...00:43
heapyi have been using windows too long, i did try suse years ago but i couldnt get it to work,.. it cost a few quid and came on 6 cd's.. i didnt give it a chance cus it confused the hell outta me00:44
heapythere is just one thing i would like to do that isnt working yet...00:47
heapy& thats to get flash working.. i dloaded something called flash-nonfree but it doesnt seem to be working cus youtube isn't00:48
Odd-rationaleheapy: did you install the flashplugin-nonfree package from the repos?00:49
heapyfrom synaptic.. not sure what repo's is m800:49
Odd-rationaleok. from synaptics is fine... are you on 32bit or 64bit?00:50
heapy32bit00:50
Odd-rationaleyou should just be able to install the flashplugin-nonfree package and then restart firefox... it hould work...00:50
Odd-rationaleif not...00:51
Odd-rationale!flash00:51
ubottuTo install Flash see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats/Flash (a recent version for !Dapper is available in !backports) - See also !Restricted and !Gnash00:51
heapyjust lookin at that site, i did install it uc00:52
Vigilanceif I boot linux from a flash drive and browse the web with it, will I be protected from malware that can be installed on the computer?00:53
Vigilancelike key loggers and such00:53
Odd-rationaleif the keylogger is in software on the computer, then yes. if the keylogger is on the website or something, then no... also, some keyloggers are attached between the keyboard and the usb port... you won't be protected from that either.00:55
heapymm it still say's "Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player. Get the latest Flash player."00:55
Odd-rationaleheapy: check your browser settginto make sure JS is on...00:56
VigilanceOdd-rationale: how can those key loggers be attached between the keyboard and usb? are those software?00:58
heapyin the preferences, applications, not there, or in the addon's , extensions, or plugin's00:59
heapyim using firefox00:59
Odd-rationaleVigilance: http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/security/5a05/00:59
Odd-rationaleheapy: Preference --> Content01:00
VigilanceOdd-rationale: thanks, so I guess ill just have to look out for physical devices. I mainly want to safely check my email while in a foreign country01:01
heapyi found it m8 ta, it was already enabled and java.... i tried unchecking, closing it down, re-checking and loadin u tube. still saying i dont have js01:03
heapyim at a loss01:11

thisguyquick question for anyone who is up at this hour-- does anyone know which directories/files MUST be writable on a filesystem for things like xserver and other apps to run? I want to make the majority of the filesystem read only.05:19
TurtleRameixt07:05
TurtleRamoops, sorry guys, didn't mean to type here07:06
TurtleRamSo hey guys - I have one stupid question. Is the only thing that makes Xubuntu unique from Ubuntu the fact that it uses Xfce?08:43
TurtleRamMy reason for asking this is because I was going to use a guide to install Ubuntu on my Macbook, but I'd much rather have Xubuntu.08:45
TurtleRamBut if that's the only thing that changes the two, I'd probably just use Ubuntu and tweak.08:46
TurtleRamUnless there's a really good reason to just do a fresh install of xubuntu.08:46
TurtleRamSorry for taking up screen-space, and thanks!08:46
pomeI'd install xubuntu and tweak09:07
pomeI only had to install open office and gedit after the base install09:08
pomebut why run anything other than osx on a mac?09:08
TheSheepbecause you can09:09
pomeand if a mac can boot from usb, install xubuntu as a usb live disk09:09
pomewww.pendrivelinux.com09:09
TurtleRamwell really, I'd like to run something completely open on my mac09:09
TurtleRamand because I'd love to begin to learn Linux and Unix in general, I guess09:10
pomeosx is linux09:10
pomefor most intents and purposes09:10
TheSheeppome: is not09:10
TurtleRamI thought it was a BSD semi-closed system09:10
TheSheeppome: it's bsd09:10
pomeI could barely tell the difference on the command line09:10
pomeit's got all the usual programs09:10
TheSheeppome: all standard-compliant (POSIX) systems are like that09:10
pomeexactly09:11
TheSheeppome: even unix services for IBM x-os09:11
TheSheepz-os09:11
TheSheepor unix services for windows, for that matter09:11
pomethe only reason I ditched osx is because I couldn't get my favourite programs to work well09:11
pomebasically, x11 dependent ones09:12
TurtleRamSo Sheep, what do you think? Should I just start with xubuntu or ubuntu and then add xfe09:12
TheSheepthe prblem with macosx is that you don't get the tools that were used to build it with it09:12
TurtleRamxfce*09:12
pomeI love xrce09:12
pomexfce09:12
pomeit's so quick09:12
TurtleRamme too09:12
pomeNautilus is like wading through toffee in comparison09:13
TheSheepTurtleRam: you can do a server install and install xubuntu-desktop09:13
TheSheepTurtleRam: server install is a base, then xubuntu-desktop package will install everything specific to xfce09:13
TurtleRamWell, I've just dropped into the world of Linux, and I'm not a slow learner, but where do I need to go to learn how to do a server install?09:14
TheSheep!server09:15
ubottuUbuntu Server Edition is a release of Ubuntu designed especially for server environments, including a server-specific !kernel and no !GUI. The install CD contains many server applications. Current !LTS version is 8.04. For more info see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ServerFaq/ - The #ubuntu-server channel provides specific support09:15
TheSheepTurtleRam: I think you use the normal cd, only pick an option to install commandline system only09:15
pomeif you're completely new, don't learn bash!09:15
pomedo everything in python09:15
TheSheeppome: everything?09:16
TurtleRamAlright, well Python I'm slightly familiar with09:16
TheSheeppome: python makes a lousy shell :)09:16
pomebash is needlessly specific09:16
pomepython runs on anything09:16
pomeregarding the default xubuntu gui apps, the only issue I have is with the default music player09:18
pome'listen' - it's always been buggy for me09:18
pomerhythmbox works much better09:18
pomefor me09:18
TheSheepfortunately you can always install the player you like09:19
TheSheepquod libet is pretty nice too09:19
TurtleRamOK, OK, so I go and install the Ubuntu server ed., then I push the xubuntu DT ed. ontop of it, and I have what I want, essentially?09:20
pomewhy install the server?09:20
TheSheepTurtleRam: yes09:20
TheSheeppome: because it's the base09:20
TurtleRamAnd what I want is something to begin with - a machine to begin learning the system and such, and possibly do some schoolwork within09:20
TheSheeppome: so you don't have to uninstall all ubuntu gui things09:20
TurtleRamOhhhhh okay... I see what you're saying. That makes sense.09:21
pomeif it's not going to be a server, it sound like unnecessary scrimpery09:21
pomexfce is light enough09:21
TurtleRamBefore I leave I just want to get this clear: To install Xubuntu is not good enough? In order to get what I want, which is tech wise just xfce with the functionality of it's mom, Ubuntu. And in order to obtain this I have to download a server ed. first as a base?09:27
pomexubuntu is the giblets and xfce gui09:28
pomethe 'server' is just the giblets09:28
pomeyou can install the server then install whichever gui you want09:28
pomeif you need one09:28
pomee.g. kde, xfce, gnome or a bunch of really ugly obscure ones09:29
pomeif you're used to osx, be prepared to be transported back to 199509:30
TurtleRamNah, I've tried different flavors before including Slackware of all things. I use osx just because I use my laptop, and I've never ventured to change this09:32
TurtleRamBut what I'm really asking here, all fluff aside, is will installing Xubuntu on my macbook give me everything I need to start with09:33
pomedepends on what you need09:43
pomebut yes09:43
pomeinstall the server then you can use the package manager to get whatever else you require09:43
pomefor instance to install a text-mode web browser: sudo apt-get install lynx09:43
pomeit's that simple09:43
TurtleRamAlright, well thanks. I'm going to install the server first and go from there... in a few days.09:47
TurtleRamBut thanks to both of you09:48
pomegood luck09:57
pomewelcome to open source goodness09:58
pomeanyone know how to get rid of the speaker cone icon from the volume panel applet?10:18
pomeit's superfluous and takes up precious, precious space10:18
TheSheeppome: you can remove the applet from the panel10:21
pomeI use the gauge just not the speaker10:21
TheSheepI suppose you could check somehow (in the sources?) how the icon is named and then resize it (possibly to 0) with gtk theme10:22
pomeyes, that's the route10:23
stimpiewhere are the xfce settings stored?\10:35

RurouniJonesHowdy all, I am running xubuntu, have installed language support for Japanese, setup SCIM so that it uses Anthy for Japanese input and the toggle is CTRL+Space12:46
RurouniJonesBut when I hit CTRL+Space, nothing happens12:46

RurouniJonesI shall hang around, see if anyone picks up on it12:47
[1]Andybtw I am using a toshiba L3012:47

[1]Andyoh back..so any solutions?12:49
[1]Andyah12:49
[1]Andyapprox size?12:50
vidddepends on if you get the "full size" or the mini12:50
vidd!mini12:50
ubottuThe Minimal CD image is very small in size, and it downloads most packages from the Internet during installation, allowing you to select only those you want (the installer is like the one on the !Alternate CD). See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD12:50
viddthe mini is only 10 MB12:51
[1]Andywow12:51
[1]Andyand I also have the xubuntu12:51
viddand you can install any flavor from one disk12:51
[1]Andyso without using internet to patch up i can use the CD?12:51
viddthe mini requires internet to properly install12:51
viddif you will not have internet until after completion, then use the alt cd12:52
vidd!alternate12:52
ubottuThe Alternate CD is a classic text-mode install CD. It supports a wider range of hardware than the !LiveCD, and can also be used as an upgrade CD.  Look for the alternate link on the Ubuntu download page - See also !minimal - Torrent at http://releases.ubuntu.com/8.10/ubuntu-8.10-alternate-i386.iso.torrent12:52

viddget the mini....12:55
vidddo a cli only install....12:56
viddthen add the live cd to your repos12:56
viddthen sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install [flavor]-desktop12:56

vidd!anyone15:27
ubottuA large amount of the first questions asked in this channel start with "Does anyone/anybody..."  Why not ask your next question (the real one) and find out?15:27
thisguyquick question for anyone who is up at this hour-- does anyone know which directories/files MUST be writable on a filesystem for things like xserver and other apps to run? I want to make the majority of the filesystem read only.15:27
Picithisguy: Why would you want to do that?15:32
Picithisguy: If a user doesn't have access to use sudo then they cannot edit most files, if they do, then changing the permissions isn't going to stop them since they can just change them back.15:32
thisguyI'm designing a car pc that shuts off when the car does, so I am using solid state drives and everything. I want to make the filesystem read only, so if it gets shut off it doesn't affect the way the filesystem functions15:33
viddthisguy, so set everything to read only15:34
viddapps need "execute" permission to function...not write permissions15:34
thisguywith what, a chmod -wx / ?15:35
thisguyright, so that command is faulty15:35
thisguyI wanted it similar to when you have a filesystem error, and the actual filesystem is read only, but I also want x and other apps to work15:35

TheSheepthompsbm: settings->date and time21:36
TheSheepthompsbm: sorry, system->...21:36
thompsbmthanks so much...i kept trying to right click...21:39
thompsbmhehehe21:39
thompsbmis there anyway to drag items in the menu to the desktop21:40
TheSheepthompsbm: no, but you can copy them from /usr/share/applications21:44
thompsbmTheSheep: sounds good thinks for the help21:45

Polizeiwell, i just need to ask somebody about it... how should i configure my keyboard layouts in xorg 7.4 (introduced in 8.10) ?22:13
Polizeitechnically spoken, where should i set up the grp:ctrl_alt_toggle xkboption ?22:14
TheSheepPolizei: read the release notes for 8.1022:14
TheSheepPolizei: it mentions the path of the config file22:14
PolizeiTheSheep, what release notes?22:14
TheSheephttp://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/releasenotes/810#X.Org%20Input%20Devices22:15
PolizeiI've bought my laptop 4 days ago and nothing but 8.10 up'ped my wi-fi card so I've been forced...22:15
Polizei(i could compile madwifi as well, but i guess im kinda lazy :p)22:15
PolizeiTheSheep, i'll check it, thanks22:16
TheSheepPolizei: I just remember it mentions the solution to your problem, took me a while to find the link, sorry22:16
PolizeiTheSheep, you're telling me... I've been walking across google.bg and google.ru for days and nothing...22:16
PolizeiI've workarounded it in xorg.conf, but now my touchpad's "scroll" doesn't work... :(22:17
TheSheepPolizei: if you install gsynaptics-mcs-plugin, you will have touchpad settings in the settings->setting manager22:18
PolizeiAnd so, `dpkg-reconfigure console-setup' never asked me for a second keyboard layout to use22:21
TheSheepPolizei: you might try asking on #ubuntu22:25
PolizeiTheSheep, I'm never gonna use GNOME, if you say that... And the touchpad scroll is not a pain in the ass, but I was just a bit curious if somebody can help...22:27
PolizeiThanks for all22:27
TheSheepPolizei: what I meant is that the xorg system is the same as in unbuntu, so they might be able to help, especially since there are more experts there22:29
PolizeiWell, I guess it worths a try :)22:32
filipegattiI was installing Samba, but then I stopped when I remembered that Thunar doesn't works with Samba... I cancelled in the middle of the downloading/installation. Have the already download packages being installed or when I cancel they automatically delete/remove?22:32
TheSheepit doesn't delete automatically, you have to call 'apt-get clean' or select an option in synaptic22:33
TheSheepfilipegatti: btw, you cam use samba with thunar using fusesmb22:33
PolizeiThey shouldn't be installed, but a kind of cache still stays in /var/cache/apt/archives22:33
filipegattihmm, thank you... in older versions of xubuntu/thunar it was kind of impossible to use samba. but I don't know what I need to install or do to check the shared folders I have in another computer using Linux also.22:36
SerraphynI installed vnc4server on my 8.04 system(fully updated) but I can't xvnc4viewer :1 it erros with unable to connect to host:22:36
filipegattiTheSheep, any thought?22:42
TheSheepfilipegatti: you still don't use it with thunar, technically22:44
TheSheepfilipegatti: fusesmb lets you mount samba shares as normal partitions, so thunar sees them as directories22:44
TheSheep!fusesmb22:45
ubottufusesmb is a tool that allows easy access to shared folders (smb) on a network.  Links with more info: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FuseSmb22:45
filipegattiright. but there are another way to access my shared folders without having to install samba and fusesmb?22:45
TheSheepfilipegatti: if they are shared using samba protocol, then you need some variation of a smaba client22:46
TheSheepfilipegatti: if you can choose how to share them, there is a number of options -- from scp, through nfs to ftp22:47
filipegattiI guess the folder on my other computer was simply shared in ubuntu using right-click button and "share". So I don't know the protocol used.22:48
filipegattithe fastest way I guess is installing samba and fusesmb, right?22:48
TheSheepfilipegatti: you don't need to install the 'samba' package itself, fusesmb will install all it needs automatically22:48
TheSheepfilipegatti: I think the 'samba' package contains the server22:49
TheSheepfilipegatti: you only need a client22:49
TheSheepfilipegatti: you also might try pyneighbourhood22:49
filipegattinever heard about this last one. i'm focusing on the more lightweight system as possible.22:49
filipegattipyneiborhood installs smbfs as required :P22:51
filipegattii'll give a try22:51
TheSheepyou might need to add your user to the fuse group and relog22:52
Serraphynwhats the command to start xfce4 like gnome-session is for gnome, is it xfce4-session?22:55
heapyhelloa!22:55
heapycan someone help me get flash working on hardy, xubuntu 32bit. I have dloaded flash-nonfree but youtube doesn't work. also i have looked at /usr/lib/flashplugin-nonfree & there isn't any files in the folder.. whats going on lads?23:00
TheSheepheapy: what does 'I have dloaded' mean exactly?23:03
heapyi tried you tube.. and it said i didnt have flash, so i pressed a button to install flash from firefox.. it dloaded flashpluggin-nonfree.. but when i look at the folder, it contains nothing23:05
heapysynaptic shows flashplugin-nonfree installed23:05
TheSheepheapy: uninstall it and install again, with synaptic this time23:07
heapy& javascript is enabled in firefox im confused!23:07
TheSheepheapy: it will ask you to accept a license23:07
heapyok23:07
TheSheepheapy: that package doesn't contain the flashplayer itself, because the license doesn't allow it, instead it has a script that asks you to accept license and then downloads and installs flashplayer23:08
heapyhang about!!!23:09
heapysynaptic just said.. file not installed could not find blah blah plugin-nonfree23:09
heapyit said "install complete" but when i pressed details it said it couldnt find the file to dload!23:10
TheSheepupdate the package list23:11
heapywhat does the little star mean next to some of the files in synaptic?23:12
heapyon the box to tick i mean23:12
TheSheepheapy: the little ubuntu logo?23:14
TheSheephit means the package is officially supported by Canonical23:15
heapywicked lad, that worked a treat!! i had to add something to the repositry (sp)23:17
heapyin synaptic23:17
j1mcHi TheSheep23:19
heapyjust one more thing to do, and im complete.. & thats to get a ntfs partition that i keep my music on to be reconised in xubuntu.. i have ran parted magic, and created the partition but dunno what to do so i can see it in here23:20
j1mcheapy: do you want the NTFS partition to be accessible when you boot your PC?23:20
j1mceach time?23:20
heapyyou mean so i can access the partition everytime i boot into the xubuntu desktop, yes. but i dont want it to be an option to boot *into, cus it doesnt have an os installed23:21
heapyits just for media stuff23:22
j1mcheapy: ok23:22
j1mc:)23:22
heapydo you know how i can wangle that m8?23:22
j1mcwhat you'll need to do is create a folder that will serve at the mounting point of that partition23:22
j1mcand then tell your file system table (fstab) to mount that partition at boot.23:23
j1mcso . . . you can create the folder /home/heapy/media or /home/heapy/music or whatever23:23
heapyok so i make a folder, /home/heapy/media then what boss? how do i use fstab? (i have not done this b4)23:24
j1mcsure... you'll need to find out how your disk sees the ntfs partition.23:25
heapycan parted magic help me on this? thats how i created the partitions in the first place u c23:25
j1mcparted magic can't help so much here.23:25
j1mcto see how your computer sees the partition, type "sudo mount | grep ntfs" (without the quotes)23:26
j1mcinto a terminal23:26
heapyther was an option to "mount" the ntfs partition to sda3 or somthing23:26
heapyshall i type that now?23:26
j1mcthe "mount" command lists all of your disk partitions - grep says "only show me the ones that contain ntfs" in the results23:27
j1mcyes, please do that now23:27
heapynothing happened!23:27
j1mcto see how your computer sees the partition, type "sudo mount | grep NTFS" (without the quotes)23:28
j1mctry it with capital NTFS23:28
heapylad, i think i messed up.. i will restart and wont be long lad,.. can u wait 5?23:29
heapyi think i might of re-formatted the partition cus i was in a rage earlier :)23:29
j1mcok23:29
heapyta m8, brb23:29

Odd-rationale!ntfs23:30
ubottuTo view your Windows/Mac partitions see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AutomaticallyMountPartitions - For write access, see !NTFS-3g or !FUSE23:30
j1mchi Odd-rationale . . . i forgot about fdisk -l23:32
MemfisEvening all, I'm familiar with debian and have been running it as a server OS for many years. I took the leap and setup an Xubuntu server which I vnc into. The only problem I have is that when no monitor is plugged in locally X starts in failsafe mode. whats the best way to prevent this as I want to run it as a headless box?23:32
j1mcOdd-rationale: that looks super-helpful, though.  :)  thx.23:32
j1mcwhy reinvent the wheel, right?23:32
j1mcMemfis: do you need any of the gui apps installed as part of xubuntu?23:33
Memfisyes I'll use vnc23:33
j1mchm, there must be a way to only start the pc up to a certain runlevel, and then startx from there.23:34
j1mci'm not sure how, exactly, though.23:34
MemfisIt's just the auto detection thing23:35
heapyheya,23:35
heapyit was sudo mount | grep NTFS ?23:36
j1mcheapy, sorry, try "sudo fdisk -l"  the last character being a lowercase L23:36
heapyaha23:37
heapythat shows some info23:37
j1mcanything about ntfs or windows?23:37
heapyHPFS/NTFS23:37
heapy/dev/sda323:37
heapy50gb23:37
j1mcok23:37
j1mcour next step is to alter our /etc/fstab file23:38
heapyoke23:38
j1mcthat shows the filesystem where all of our partitions are23:38
j1mcfirst, let's backup our current fstab file23:39
heapygood plan :)23:39
Odd-rationalej1mc: np. :D23:39
j1mcsudo cp /etc/fstab /etc/fstab_backup23:39
j1mcthat copies the /etc/fstab file :)  (cp == copy)23:39
heapymissing destination file after fstab_backup23:39
j1mcwhat?  is that an error message?23:40
heapycp: missing destination file operand after `/etc/fstab_backup'23:40
heapyTry `cp --help' for more information.23:40
Odd-rationaleyou forgot to put /etc/fstab23:41
Odd-rationalecp /etc/fstab /etc/fstab.bak23:41
Odd-rationalei think you might have just done "cp /etc/fstab_backup"23:42
heapysheapy:~$ sudo cp /etc/fstab_backup23:42
heapythats what i wrote m823:42
Odd-rationaleyeah... that's what i mean...23:42
j1mcsudo cp /etc/fstab /etc/fstab_backup23:42
j1mcheapy: you skipped the original "/etc/fstab"23:43
heapypsheapy:~$ sudo cp /etc/fstab /etc/fstab_backup23:43
j1mcthe command needs to be "as root, copy /etc/fstab to /etc/fstab_backup"23:43
j1mcyou just said, "as root, copy /etc/fstab_backup"23:43
heapythanks, gottcha now lad duur im a donut23:44
j1mcdid it work now?23:45
heapywell it hasn't done anything, its waiting for me to do some more i think23:45
heapythis is correct:23:45
heapyheapy:~$ sudo cp /etc/fstab /etc/fstab_backup23:45
Memfisanyone else able to help with with running X in headless?23:47
j1mcheapy: ok, ubuntu now uses something called a UUID as part of setting the mount points23:47
heapyoke..23:47
mschemeriiMemfis: in what way are you wanting headless? (terminal access and/or GUI)23:47
heapyim listenin m8. and learning23:47
j1mcit's more specific than just device labels, so we need to determine the UUID of your NTFS partition23:47
heapyok23:48
MemfisGUI. I've setup xubuntu gui, but starting it without a monitor X complains and goes into failsafe mode23:48
j1mcso because your ntfs partition is at /dev/sda3, we need to identify the UUID of that partition23:48
j1mcto do that, we can enter, "sudo vol_id -u /dev/sda3"23:48
j1mc(without the quotes)23:48
j1mcyou should get a string of characters that make no sense to you.  :)23:49
heapymm error opening volume23:49
Odd-rationalej1mc: i'm not too sure about using uuid with ntfs...23:49
j1mcreally?23:49
Odd-rationalejust use device name...23:49
j1mcOdd-rationale: ok23:49
j1mcthx23:49
Odd-rationaledo "sudo mkdir /media/ntfs" then http://paste2.org/p/11652123:50
Odd-rationaleor something like that...23:50
heapywould this be easier to use a different file system for my media stuff lads?23:50
Odd-rationaleheapy: well, depends..23:50
Odd-rationaledo you need to use this parition with windows as well?23:51
Odd-rationaleif so, then it is better to use ntfs... if you are using it only with linux, then ext3 would be better...23:51
heapynot right now i wont. but i figure i will be needing to install windows again in the future for some course work.. its a requirement23:51
Odd-rationaleok. well, ntfs works fine in linux...23:52
Odd-rationalenow at least...23:52
j1mcyeah, it should be fine, heapy23:52
Odd-rationaleanyways. gtg...23:52
j1mcok, well, we've backed up our fstab file, so let's open up the regular one, and edit it23:52
heapynight night odd rat m823:52
j1mcgksudo mousepad /etc/fstab23:52
heapyokw j1mc am wid u23:53
j1mclet me know when it's open23:53
heapyopen...23:53
j1mcare there any lines in it that talk about /dev/sda3 already?23:53
heapyno, just sda1 and sda5 oh and scd0 for cdrom23:54
j1mccool - we'll add a line for sda3 then23:54
j1mccopy and paste this complete line into a new line23:54
j1mc/dev/sda3 /home/heapy/media ntfs ro,user,auto,noexec,umask=0 0 023:54
heapydo i actually need to make the folder at this point?23:55
j1mcyou can make the folder right after we do this - it's ok23:55
j1mcor you can do it now23:56
j1mceither wya23:56
j1mcway23:56
heapyis /home/heapy <- the name of the computer?23:56
j1mcif you open up a new terminal . . .23:56
j1mcand type in   pwd   what comes up?23:56
heapy./home/thomas23:57
j1mc/dev/sda3 /home/thomas/media ntfs ro,user,auto,noexec,umask=0 0 023:57
heapygottcha23:57
heapy.. am adding this line under the cdrom023:58
j1mcok23:58
heapydone..23:58
j1mcadd a line above the one you just added that says #mount ntfs partition  (include the hash symbol) :)23:59
j1mcthe hash symbol tells the computer to not read that line23:59
