jenniferI'm looking at something on The Linux foundataion. It mentions something about Lenmark 9500 drivers00:00
geniijennifer: Yes, thats what I just stated.00:01
jenniferoh lol sorry. So if i just install that driver, my printer will work00:02
geniijennifer: Hopefully. But Lexmark printers generally are not linux-friendly, so your mileage may vary00:03
alexeiwhy vim does not save/restore the cursosr position in a file on subsequent edits in Intrepid? I used to like it so much ...00:03
jenniferhow would i go about doing that00:03
jenniferjust go to the website and download it then hoop my printer up00:04
geniijennifer: First try under System Settings...Printers         to add it00:04
jenniferi already did; it said it was added but when I went to print something out; it gave me an error saying it couldnt print the file00:05
geniijennifer: Did you have it plugged in/powered on when you did that?00:07
jenniferyeah00:07
geniijennifer: So you set it up as: local printer  with driver: Lexmark 9500     and are using CUPS as the printing system?00:10
jenniferi dont think so; i mean i am very new to Linux00:10
jenniferi'm trying to figure out how to add a printer; its a USB hook up00:11
jenniferthe drivers that came with it is only for Windows OS's00:11
geniijennifer: Yes, you will not have any use for the driver cd, since it is only Windows drivers on that.00:12
uber_nooberhave u checked to see if linux supports it?00:12
jenniferive heard a few things; someone said it doesnt then i hear once i get a driver for it00:12
geniijennifer: I suggest to return to System Settings...Printers. And to remove or delete the printer entry which exists now for it. Then "Add a Printer/Class"  tell it Local Printer. When asked for driver Go to Lexmark and chose if there 9500 series00:13
geniiuber_noober: It uses the Lexmark 9500 which should be a driver for it in the printing subsystem without installing anything00:14
ImLizhey all, anyone know if I download gparted iso if it will work with kubuntu 6.06?  Or can I download it in the live cd of 8.04?00:15
geniiImLiz: The gparted cd is independent of any operating system00:15
uber_noobergenii: sweet, so all u do is add it in http://localhost:63100:15
geniiuber_noober: Hopefully.00:16
ImLizgenii: oh cool, so once copied to a cd, all I have to do is put it in the cd-rom right?00:17
jenniferhow do i remove a printer00:17
geniiImLiz: Yes, and boot to it00:17
geniijennifer: PRinter.. Remove00:18
ImLizgenii: ok, thanks :)00:18
uber_nooberthat's how i added my Brother printer, although kubuntu recognized it when i plugged it in as hl-144000:18

uber_noobergenii: do u know if the installation cd lets u select to install grub on root partition?00:22
ImLizAlso, anyone familiar with virtualbox???00:22
geniiuber_noober: I'm not sure if the gparted cd had grub on it. If so, then yes00:23
uber_nooberno i mean i want to install ubuntu on my laptop but i don't want it to install grub on the mbr. i want it to isntall grub on its own root partition, but it doesn' give me an option00:24
geniiuber_noober: If you install grub to a subpartition instead of master boot record of a drive, it overwrites partitioning info and the partition becoes unbootable00:25
uber_nooberi already have grub installed on its own partition and mbr, i'm trying to chainload ubuntu so i need to install grub for ubuntu during installation not on the mbr but on the root partition of sda3 where ubuntu is to be isntalled00:26
geniiuber_noober: If you have some bootloader on the master boot record of the first drive which boots, you can install grub for instance to mbr of drive2 then chainload it. But if you install grub for nstance to sdb1 or sdb2 or such instead of sdb then it corrupts the partition header info and the system can't figure out what type of filesystem is on the partition00:28
geniiuber_noober: You can test this easily enough by making a swap partition, install grub to it, then do after an  fdisk -l    for that partition. It won't show as swap anymore, the grub install messes it up00:29
uber_noobergenii: linux allows u to install it's own bootloader either in mbr or its root partition00:30
uber_nooberso there is no conflict there00:30
uber_nooberthat's because the boot loader can be installed first then the linux system00:31
brennohey00:32
uber_nooberin short yes you can place a bootloader on individual root partitions - i am running slack 12.2 and debian etch00:32
brennohow do i install the libc library, most preferably version 600:32
uber_nooberthey both allow me to install a bootloader, but ubuntu doesn't, hence my problem00:32
=== ubuntu_ is now known as Belue
geniiuber_noober: You can have whatever bootloader you like on the main mbr of first booting drive and whatever other bootloaders you like on the beginning of any other drive you like and chainload them this way. But as I said, easy to test how it corrupts an individual subpartition info.00:33
geniiuber_noober: You can shift to cli on install cd and do manual grub-install if you like to whatever drive you like00:34
uber_nooberbrenno: glibc00:34

Davieynate_: 7.04 has reached it's end of life, so you won't get any more updates02:34
radlipatwhy is off topic down?02:37
Davieynate_: Therefore, you should really upgrade - the upgrade path isn't tested for jumping from 7.04 to either the latest long term support, or the latest release.  Therefore you either need to upgrade to 7.10->8.04 and stop to stick to the long term version, or jump to 8.10 for the latest release02:37

Colonel_PanicI'm going to have to just doiwnload and burn a live cd and reinstall kubuintu06:22
zoraelPsi-Jack: You shouldn't _need_ to install anything extra, even if you installed kubuntu-desktop atop another installation06:22
DaSkreechFlyboarder: What install CD?06:22
eppani only have kdesudo no kdesu06:22
DaSkreechLive?06:22
Psi-Jackzorael: Hmm. but when I go into...06:22
DaSkreechColonel_Panic: I meant the package error06:22
zoraelPsi-Jack: Can't you pick OSSv4 under System Settings -> Multimedia?06:22
Psi-Jackzorael: System Settings06:22
FlyboarderKubuntu 8.10 that i got off of kubuntu.org06:23
Psi-Jackzorael: Then Sound, no, all hardware is greyed out.06:23
DaSkreechColonel_Panic: I've found the server upgrade helps a lot06:23
Colonel_PanicI tried upgrading twice now, but it throws this error, something like "Could not finish installing packages, either some packaged failed to download or installation would break dependencies06:23
Colonel_Panicsomething like that06:23
FlyboarderDaSkreech: Kubunto 8.10 off of the kubuntu website06:24
Colonel_Panicthen Adept exits06:24
Colonel_Panicleaving my installatkion half-done and broken06:24
DaSkreechFlyboarder: Ok do you get a desktop ?06:24
DaSkreech!upgrade06:24
ubottuFor upgrading, see the instructions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UpgradeNotes06:24
DaSkreechColonel_Panic: On that page try the server upgrade06:24
Colonel_Panicwhat's a server upgrade?06:25
FlyboarderDaSkreech: yes i am installing on my other computer, or trying to.06:25
zoraelPsi-Jack: Hmm, https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OpenSound#System%20Sounds%20on%20KDE%204.x06:25
zoraelPsi-Jack: Install the KDE Phonon GStreamer backend:06:25
DaSkreechColonel_Panic: They have steps for an Ubuntu upgrade a Kubuntu upgrade and a server upgrade06:25
zoraelPsi-Jack: sudo apt-get install -y phonon-backend-gstreamer06:25
Psi-Jackzorael: It's installed.06:25
zoraelPsi-Jack: Oh.06:25
DaSkreechFlyboarder: Alright let me know if you need anything06:26
FlyboarderDaSkreech: well it wont install06:26
DaSkreechFlyboarder: This is after you get the desktop and click on Install ?06:26
Colonel_PanicI don't see that06:26
FlyboarderDaSkreech: yes06:26
Colonel_Panicthe server upgrade appears to be for Ubuntu06:26
Colonel_Panicnot Kubuntu06:26
DaSkreechDoes the installer show up atall06:26
Psi-Jackzorael: Here's the funny thing. Sound DOES work. :)06:27
zoraelzorael: Well then!06:27
zoraelPsi-Jack: er.06:27
Psi-Jackkmix doesn't work completely, but it works..06:27
DaSkreechColonel_Panic: from 8.04 to 8.10 correct ?06:27
Colonel_PanicI can't do this anyway, because I can't run kdesudo06:27
zoraelPsi-Jack: I think kmix interfaces directly with alsa and not through Phonon, so you'd need to use ossmixer06:27
Colonel_Panicyeah06:27
Colonel_Panicthat's what I'm trying to do06:27
DaSkreechhttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/IntrepidUpgrades#Network Upgrade for Ubuntu Servers (Recommended)06:27
Psi-Jackzorael, Right.. Kinda learned that. kmix works for the master volume at least, just not for setting things like the capture source and stuff.06:28
Colonel_PanicbutI'm running Kubuntu06:28
qcjnDaSkreech: didn't change the look of the desktop, but it looks like it has different app06:28
DaSkreechOh pffft06:28
DaSkreechColonel_Panic: That URL ^^^06:28
Colonel_PanicNot Ubuntu06:28
qcjncompiz works06:28
FlyboarderDaSkreech: The installer showes some lines of code then says "end trace" and does nothing after that06:28
DaSkreechqcjn: You logged in ?06:28
qcjnyep06:28
qcjnhad to restart the computer06:28
DaSkreechFlyboarder: Hmm can you run a Disk integrity check ?06:28
zoraelPsi-Jack: The wiki entry touches upon that as well, I see. So yeah, missing feature.06:28
DaSkreechqcjn: Ha not really but ok06:29
zoraelPsi-Jack: Can't suggest more than to supplement kmix with ossmixer06:29
DaSkreechqcjn: Log out and press alt+T you will get a listing choose KDE then login again06:29
FlyboarderDaSkreech: the disk checks out06:29
DaSkreechqcjn: To get back here open Konversation06:29
zoraelPsi-Jack: though the last time I tried the latter my eyes bled.06:29
FlyboarderDaSkreech: is there a guide for install?06:29
Colonel_PanicSynaptic won't start06:29
qcjni tryed without restarting it, but since i didn't see no difference, i restarted it06:29
DaSkreech:-)06:30
qcjnow i m whit xchat, i ll look for kopete06:30
Colonel_Panicthe menu link to Synaptic does nothing06:30
DaSkreechqcjn: There is an option on the login screen for sessions. Click that and choose KDE06:30
DaSkreechqcjn: you have to logout though06:30
DaSkreechFlyboarder: That's kinda strange. You may have to use an alternate CD06:31
qcjnthere wasn't no options,...that's what i tought i would do06:31
Colonel_PanicI cannot follow this guide. It won't work06:31
DaSkreechColonel_Panic: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/IntrepidUpgrades06:31
FlyboarderDaSkreech: this is my thrid cd.06:31
DaSkreechColonel_Panic: There is a link to Ubuntu servers on that page06:31
DaSkreechThat's what you want to follow06:31
qcjnbe back ...try with kopete06:31
DaSkreechFlyboarder: Well did you check the MD5 sum for the ISO ?06:32
FlyboarderDaSkreech:??????06:32
DaSkreech!md506:32

Colonel_PanicI cannot follow thaT TUTORIAL06:32
zoraelIsn't KDE 4.2 beta 2 due today?06:32
DaSkreechColonel_Panic: Why not?06:32
zoraelAt least according to the wikipedia entry06:32
DaSkreechYes06:33
Colonel_Panicbecause I don't have that menu06:33
DaSkreechColonel_Panic: You are reading the wrong part there is no menu in that section06:33
FlyboarderDaSkreech: do i need ubuntu installed first?06:33
DaSkreechFlyboarder: no06:33
DaSkreechBut your computer seems fussy at the least.06:33
Colonel_Panicwhy do you keep posting the links to the same 2 pages? I told you it dopesn'06:33
DaSkreechIf you have tested the md5 sum and checked the disk integrity then you may want to try the alternate installer CD06:34
DaSkreechColonel_Panic: the page doesn't open ?06:34
Colonel_Panicyes the page opens06:35
FlyboarderDaSkreech: will kubuntu install in VPC?06:35
DaSkreechRight there is a small menu on the right side06:35
DaSkreechWith 1 2 then an indented 1 nd 206:36
DaSkreechClick on the indented 2 entry06:36
DaSkreechFollow that06:36
Colonel_PanicI'm doing a apt-get -f install06:36
DaSkreechFlyboarder: Yes easily06:36
DaSkreechColonel_Panic: Ok if you get an error can you pastebin it?06:36
Colonel_PanicOK06:36
Colonel_PanicI will06:36
Colonel_PanicI seem to remember having issues when I upgraded to Hardy06:36
FlyboarderDaSkreech well that is what i am currently trying and it does the same thing06:36
Colonel_PanicOr... I mean Gutsy'06:36
Colonel_Panic]wait, no it was Hardy06:37
Colonel_Panicyeah06:37
DaSkreech:-)06:37
Colonel_PanicI had to reinstall from a LiveCD06:37
FlyboarderDaSkreech: Doesnt seem to install in VPC at all for me.06:37
DaSkreechFlyboarder: does it give you an error?06:37
Colonel_Panichad to re-set up all my desktop settings all over again]06:37
DaSkreechColonel_Panic: Oh dear. you don't have a /home parititon ?06:38
Colonel_Panicwow this is a lot of crap it's installing06:38
Colonel_Panicyes I do06:38
Colonel_Panicof course I do06:38
=== maquina7 is now known as MusiCrazY
DaSkreechWhy would you have to setup your settings  again then?06:38
DaSkreechqcjn: Hi06:38
Colonel_PanicI have no idea06:38
qcjnDaSkreech: hi06:38
Colonel_Panicit changed my desktop06:38
qcjnDaSkreech: kopete looks good06:39
DaSkreechHi _206:39
Colonel_PanicI hope KDE4 isn't gong to cause me a lot of headaches06:39
DaSkreechqcjn: Alright you are still with compiz ?06:39
_2DaSkreech06:39
Mamarokhuhu DaSkreech :)06:39
DaSkreechColonel_Panic: Depends on what you expect06:39
DaSkreechHi Mamarok06:39
zoraelAm I the only one for whom panels cover fullscreen applications, in the 4.2 beta?06:39
Colonel_PanicI expect it to fucking work06:39
Colonel_Panicthat's all06:39
FlyboarderDaSkreech: it runs some lines with code like this: c04ab93d then the last line says end trace06:40
qcjnDaSkreech: yes, still got compiz06:40
DaSkreechzorael: You can click on the cashew and tell it not to cover applications in the more settings button06:40
Riddellahem06:40
Colonel_PanicI expect to not have a ton of problems with all my applications and stuff06:40
DaSkreechHi Riddell are you following Flyboarder's plight ?06:40
Mamarokhuhu Riddell :)06:40
Colonel_PanicOK it's done fixing the deps06:40
DaSkreech!ohmy | Colonel_Panic06:40
ubottuColonel_Panic: Please watch your language and topic to help keep this channel family friendly.06:40
Colonel_PanicUh oh sorry06:40
zoraelDaSkreech: Well, the normal behaviour is to have it limit the desktop area (acting as a normal activity bar), *yet* allow fullscreen applications to cover the whole screen06:41
Colonel_PanicI figured nobody'd care at this hour06:41
RiddellDaSkreech: I'm afraid I'm not06:41
Colonel_Panicthen again, I guess it's not the middle of the night everywhjere in the world06:41
Riddellabend Mamarok06:41
zoraelDaSkreech: As it is right now, it does limit the desktop area so the panel is visible with *maximized* windows, yet fullscreen windows go beneath it, leaving it visible atop.06:41
Mamarokmorgen :)06:41
qcjnDaSkreech: But one funny thing , like i told you, my desktop, looks the same..Could it be because i've installed a theme desktop, so it keeps it ?06:41
DaSkreechRiddell: On I think three machines the install app starts then spits out a backtrace and dies06:41
zoraelDaSkreech: like, fullscreened Firefoxes, fullscreened media players, etc.06:41
DaSkreechColonel_Panic: Good observation :)06:42
DaSkreechqcjn: I think that you are still in Gnome :) did you logout and click on sessions as I asked ?06:42
Colonel_PanicUh... I can't use kdesu06:42
MamarokColonel_Panic: try kdesudo06:43
Colonel_Panicso I can't open the /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades06:43
Colonel_Panickdesudo doesn't work either06:43
qcjnDaSkreech: like i've told you, thats what i wanted to do, but i didn't have this option06:43
DaSkreechColonel_Panic: You shouldn't need to with the instructions I gave you06:43
Colonel_Panicoh... wait it just did06:43
_2Colonel_Panic are you the primary user ?   (admin) ?06:43
Colonel_PanicI have to edit the /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades file06:43
DaSkreechqcjn: Press alt+T it will pop up the menu even if it's hidden06:43
Colonel_Panicoh, ok it says prompt=normal06:44
Colonel_Panicok06:44
Colonel_Panichere goes... sudo do-release-upgrade06:44
DaSkreechColonel_Panic: Ah sudo nano /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades should work06:44
qcjnDaSkreech: in the login "when it open's"06:44
Colonel_PanicI was all set to use vi06:44
DaSkreech_2: Botched upgrade06:44
DaSkreechqcjn: Hmm ?06:44
Colonel_Panic"botched"?06:44
DaSkreechWell you said it stopped part way06:45
DaSkreechthat's botched06:45
_2DaSkreech so is sudoers broken or is it just the kde specific app ?06:45
Colonel_Panicit appeared to do that, yes06:45
FlyboarderDaSkreech: What settings should i use for VPC? "Other"????06:45
Colonel_Panicsudo works for me06:45

DaSkreechUnless _2 wants to attack it ? :)06:46
eppanColonel_Panic: have you tried kdesudo?06:46
DaSkreechqcjn: what do you mean "when it open's" ?06:46
RiddellDaSkreech: the install app?  adept?06:46
Colonel_Panicyeah it worked to open kate06:46
DaSkreechArgh06:46
MamarokColonel_Panic: default is kdesudo06:46
DaSkreechRiddell: Ubiquity06:46
_2DaSkreech on.   just going to offer support for sudo if that was the issue.06:47

I have searched the repos several times using several key words and cant find a specific "jack audio" package, nor can i confirm it is installed at all08:26

_2the reason that sound is lacking in linux is because the hardware for the most part is not hardware but 1/2 hardware and 3/4 code that uses the cpu to emulate sound hardware.08:29

eagles0513875geiseri you wanting to strip down your machine to command line then build it up from the ground up11:32
eagles0513875geiseri that will give u kde with nothing installed on it11:32
geiserieagles0513875: that is what im doing, i started with debootstrap11:32

Psi-Jackzce: Why? Just curious. I hate that a WIRED network connection, gnome's nm-applet constantly tells you it's connected.22:05

Daskreec1n4mu: Overall it's nice but you do strongly start to feel that you should have two machines with ubuntu22:09

n4muthen i cannot say, i just upgraded too, but i'm not even to the point of testing videos22:12
Bundestrojaneri also made a analysis of the problem:22:13
Bundestrojanerthe most strange thing is, that the video player takes only 25% of cpu-power22:13
n4muDaskreec1: okay22:13
Bundestrojanerso i have no idea what the problem is22:14
Bundestrojanerbut it works with mplayer on blackbox22:14
