FishsceneHello everyone, I have what I hope to be a simple question. I have just installed Ubuntu server via cdrom. After install, I am unable to see the contents of any cdrom I place in the drive.03:39

FishsceneHow do I mount the cd?03:40
Deepsby default, mount /cdrom03:40
Fishsceneoy.03:41
Deepsyou'll also need to umount /cdrom before it'll allow you to eject the disc03:41

Deepsmount /media/cdrom should do the job too03:41

xp_prghi all, a little bit of a newbie, how can I configure security updates please?09:12
Sookiehi09:28
SookieI have a problem that I can't figure out how to sort out. I managed to get the VPN PPT connection to work in Intrepid at home. However at the office it does'nt connect. Starting in XP or using another computer in the same office network (XP) it is possible to connect, however when I start my computer in Linux it doesn't. The only diference between home and the office is that at the office we have a VPN PPTP server with the PP09:28
SookieTP protocol ports forwarded to it; However if this is the reason, why the others computers or mine in XP can connect? Can you help me please?09:28
Oliberdo you know which firewall product they're using at work?09:39
SookieOliber, I am actually the network administrator, and I have total access to the router, which is using now DW-RT software09:53
SookieOliber, the computers are all connected directly to the network (router), no proxy or firewall in the middle09:54
Oliberis the router NATting?09:54
Sookieyes it is09:54
Sookiein fact, it is forwarding 1723 port to the VPN server which is actually installed ina Ubuntu Server computer09:54
Oliberbecuase most of the time, you can have lots of PPTP going in one direction09:55
Sookiebutm whay is this happenign only in Ubuntu?09:55
Oliberand none in the opposite direction, at the same time09:55
SookieI mean, when I start up my laptop in XP no problem, however if I startup in Ubuntu I get no connection in VPN, and when I start up my laptop in Ubuntu AT home, I get connected09:56
Sookie?09:56
SookieSo the routing should not be a problem, right?09:56
Oliberif it's on the same subnet/ip then yeah, thats a bit odd :s09:57
SookieYes,the router is doing DHCP, so whichever is the SO a startup with, I get automatically the IP. In fact now I am writing you this in UBuntu connected to the router, but no VPN is possible09:59
SookieHowever if I restart now this same computer in XP, I can get connected to the VPN, and if I move this computer to home, I can connect to the VPN using Ubuntu¿?09:59
SookieHow can I track this problem? I really need the VPN to work09:59
SookieI thought that since I was port forwarding 1723 to the Ubuntu Server, somehow it is not good for another UBuntu computer in the same network¿?10:01
Sookieis that possible?10:01
SookieOliber, it works now10:23
SookieOliber, I didn't do anything, just the new updates icon started to blink at the bottom and I donwloaded the propossed 35 packages, I restarted and here we go, the VPN gets connected now ¿?¿¿?10:24
SookieThis is the time to say : "What the hell..??"10:25

DeepsSookie: sounds like there was a bug that was fixed in your updates?10:31
perlmonkeyhi guys, I think I accidently screwed my server during an upgrade from shell.. I'm trying to remove exim4 and replace with postfix, but getting a whole load of dependency issues related to exim4-daemon-light after exim4 is removed10:32
perlmonkeyany suggestions? am I looking at a complete reinstall of OS?10:32
SookieKoon, Yes I am using Network manager10:33
SookieDeeps, yes it sounds, but in that case Why was it working at home???10:33
perlmonkeyhttp://pastebin.com/m4466936b10:33
SookieIn fact, there is a big entry in launchpad about networkmanager-pptp!!! but all related to make te VPN to work, however I already managed this..my problem was that was only wokring at home's nework10:34
Sookieand now after the updates it magicaally started to work!10:34
perlmonkey sudo apt-get remove exim4-base: The following packages have unmet dependencies.  exim4-daemon-light: Depends: exim4-base (>= 4.69) but it is not going to be installed10:35
perlmonkeysudo apt-get remove exim4-daemon-light:  exim4-base: dependency problems, but removing anyway as you request:  exim4-daemon-light depends on exim4-base (>= 4.69).10:36

SookieDeeps, network-manager-pptp version 0.7.xx10:48
SookieDeeps, the last one, I always download the latest updates for Ubuntu10:49
sorenperlmonkey: sudo rm /etc/init.d/exim4* ; sudo apt-get remove postfix+ exim4-base exim4 exim4-daemon-light10:50
SookieMy colleague by my side just tried to conenct to the VPN and it woekd out (he is usig XP). Both are under the same network, the same rights10:50
SookieAnd I just connected 10 minutes ago, and now I cant10:50
perlmonkeysoren: thanks10:50
sorenperlmonkey: No problem :)10:52
perlmonkeysoren: phew you're a hero! all back to normal =)10:52
SookieAny ideas folks?10:53
perlmonkeysoren: how did you figure that out? isnt that weird apt wouldnt uninstall exim4?10:53
sorenperlmonkey: Not really. There's probably something that depended on an mta.10:54
sorenperlmonkey: Putting postfix+ on the line at the same time made sure that dependency was never broken.10:55
perlmonkeyoh10:55
perlmonkeyahh i see10:55
sorenI suppose it's even possible that just installing postfix would have done the trick (since postfix conflicts with exim4 (or exim4-base or whatever)).10:56
perlmonkeysoren: im much obliged anyway, I thought I would be looking at a day wasted here on a server reinstall10:56
sorenperlmonkey: A reinstall is virtually never the right (nor easiest answer).10:57
perlmonkeytrue10:57
SookieI am going to restart just to check something11:09
SookieHi again, nothing11:13
SookieI can't make it to work again11:13
SookieI am really lost on this11:13
SookieDo you have any idea about what can I check in order to get the reason for such unestable behaivour?11:14
sorenSookie: What's the problem?11:16
Sookiesoren, I can't make the VPN connection to work in my office when I start up in Ubuntu, however it works when I am in XP, and it works when I am at home in Ubuntu as well.11:17
sorenHow does it fail?11:17
SookieVPN Failed Connection11:17
Sookiethat's all11:17
sorenWhere do you see this?11:17
Sookiethe funny thing is that it connected once just 20 min ago11:17
Sookiein the Netowork Manager applet11:18
sorenLook in syslog, then.11:18
SookieIn syslog just: Modem hung up11:18
Sookielet's se11:18
SookieI copy it into pastebin11:18

Sookiehttp://pastebin.com/m5de5722d, that's a tail command fo syslog11:19
Sookiehttp://pastebin.com/m2bef3388, that's a complete one11:21
Sookieany clue?11:22
SookieEverything looks to be ok, doesn't it?11:24
SookieI think the problem is: LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests11:27
Sookieuntil that everything is going ok11:28
krautmoin11:30
Sookiesoren, any idea? thanks11:33
sorenSookie: What do you see on the server?11:39
SookieI am not in the server, I am in my laptop11:48
Sookiebut we have a server too11:48
sorenWhat are you connecting to?11:49
SookieI am trying to connect to a remote VPN server in other office of our group11:50
Sookiehowever in our local network we have another UBuntu server that is a VPN server to the people in the remote office too11:50
Sookiewhen I try to connect to the remote VPN network using my Ubuntu installation, it doesn't work11:50
SookieIf I try the same starting in XP from the same computer it works11:50
SookieIf I try the same at home starting in Ubuntu it works11:51
SookieMy colleagues here are using XP and they are in the same network as me but they can connect to the remote VPN11:51
SookieSo I think it is not a router problem, otherwise in XP it shouldn't work11:52
Sookiealso I think it is not my Ubuntu installation, since at home it works11:52
SookieI think that somehow my UBuntu isntallation in my laptop doesn't like that at the same network we have a Ubuntu VPN server..11:53
Sookieis that possible?11:53
Sookiesoren, have you checked my syslog file11:53
sorenYeah. I can't see what the problem is.11:56
Sookiethe LCP timeout right?11:56
SookieHave you seen the LCP timeout?11:57
Sookieand afterwards just "modem hungup"?11:57
Sookiethe funny thing is 1 hour before, I installed the last updates Ubuntu was warning me about, and then I restarted, and tried to conect and surprise! It worked, However I disconnecte and since then I couldnt make it to work again11:58
Sookie¿?11:59
sorenSorry, I don't know what could cause this.12:12
SookieOK, I have to restart then in XP..I need to work and it is obvious that Ubuntu is not giving me the chance, thanks anyway12:16
SookieWe have a Ubuntu Server which in the router the por 1723 is being forwarded to; Here is my question, if I have another computer in the same nerwork that is trying to connect a remote VPN network, will be there any problem?12:37
SookiePlease12:37
Sookiemaybe this is the problem12:37
Oliber1723 and GRE should be forwarded, which often causes problems on NATting devices12:39
Oliberif 1723 and GRE are forwarded to an internal address, internal clients cannot connect to external PPTP servers12:40
SookieSo why in XP they can?12:40
SookieThat would exmplain why I cant connect to remote VPN networks, since the por 1723 is already forwarded to another IP (in this case the Ubuntu server)12:41
SookieBut Why the XP clients can connect?12:41
SookieAnd my second question is; How can we have a VPN server (forward ports 1723 to it), and at the same time be able to connect to remote VPN connections?12:42
SookieCould be possible to put the VPN Ubuntu server under DMZ, and delete the 1723 port forwarding so the internal clients can connnect to remote VPN connections?12:43
SookieThanks for your responses in advance12:43
SookieThat doesn't seem to be the problem, since I disabled the port forwarding to the server in the router, and the results are still the same12:47
Sookieany ideas?12:48
SookieNothing12:51
SookieI disabled the VPN server in our network12:51
SookieI disabled the port forwarding to the server12:51
SookieAll the XP computers can log into the remote VPN network, but the Ubuntu one12:51
Sookiewll, I give up13:06
Sookiethis is really a crap13:06
SookieMore than 1 week wasted in making a VPN to work!13:07
SookieI even put the computer directly in DMZ, and the same results13:08
SookieI don't understand anything13:08

Deepsowned by msql14:05
Deepsunsurprisingly14:05
Deepsmysql*14:05
Fenix|workDeeps, it isn't surprising... except for /var/lib/mysql/mysql which is mysql:root14:06
Fenix|workwhich makes me wonder if all database folders need to be owned this way14:06
sorenNot here..14:06
sorendrwxr-xr-x 2 mysql mysql     4096 2007-11-17 23:17 mysql14:06
Deepsgroup ownership isn't something that matters too much in this instance14:07
Deepsmysqld runs as mysql user, if the files are owned by mysql user, there's no problem14:07

Fenix|workthose are the permissions I see14:08
Fenix|workthis is with a fresh 8.10 install14:08
Deepsas i say, as long as they're read/writable by the mysql user somehow, either through user or group ownership, and they are owned by mysql user as seen there, you're not likely to encounter any problems. if you're concerned chown -R mysql:mysql /var/lib/mysql14:10
Fenix|workand the perms are generally 664?14:13

Fenix|work66014:13
Deepsaye14:13
Deeps755 on /var/lib/mysql/mysql, 700 on db folders14:14
Fenix|workok... perfect14:16
Fenix|workone other question... this is the first I'm using mysql with 8.10 ... does it now say "* Checking for corrupt, not cleanly closed and upgrade needing tables." when mysql starts up?14:17

Fenix|workAnyone have a second to help with apache vhosts?15:09
geniiFenix|work: You might want to also ask in channel #apache15:10
Fenix|workgenii, yeah I might... but they're generally very hostile to those not using their version :)15:10
Fenix|workIt's a simple vhost/permissions issue15:10
* genii sips15:11
Fenix|workwhen trying to access my vhost abc.domain.com I get 403 Forbidden, but accessing server.domain.com/abc I get the page15:11
Fenix|workI'm also getting "NameVirtualHost *:80 has no VirtualHosts" when apache starts up15:12
geniiHmm15:12
Fenix|workthe vhost I enabled reads <VirtualHost *>15:14
Deepsperms on rootdir of the vhost15:14
Deepswill probably explain the 40315:14
Deepsand/or lack of auto index page generator module15:15
Fenix|workabc.domain.com is located in /var/www/abc15:15
Deeps(if you dont have a real index page in there already)15:15
Fenix|workabc.domain.com is a CNAME to server.domain.com15:15
Fenix|workthe default vhost points to /var/www15:15
Fenix|work(apache default vhost)15:15
Fenix|workabc.domain.com dies with 403 ... server.domain.com/abc works15:16
Deepscheck the error log15:16
Deepseither that or you've fluffed your vhost file15:16
Fenix|workI keep forgetting the stupid errorlog15:16
Fenix|work.htaccess pcfc_openfile: unable to check htaccess file15:16
Fenix|workwhat are the default permissions for files and folders for apache, 644/755 ?15:17
Fenix|workand they're all owned by www-data:www-data?15:17
Deepsyea15:18
Deepsapache runs as user www-data15:18
Fenix|work.htaccess is 644 as well I suppose?15:19
Deepsas long as it's readable by the www-data user15:19
Deepsthats largely all that matters15:19
Fenix|workOh, I've also disabled my vhost ... and am getting the message from /etc/init.d/apache2 :: [warn] NameVirtualHost *:80 has no VirtualHosts15:19
Fenix|workthis is just default settings now15:20
Deepsyep, you need a vhost defined as <VirtualHost *:80> somewhere i think to make that be quiet15:20
Fenix|workok15:20

Fenix|work [error] VirtualHost *:80 -- mixing * ports and non-* ports with a NameVirtualHost address is not supported, proceeding with undefined results15:22

Deepsah15:23
Faust-Cuse a IP15:23

Deepsyou can15:24
yann2yes you can Fenix|work15:24
* yann2 uses named ssl vhosts :)15:24
Fenix|work# SSL name based virtual hosts are not yet supported, therefore no NameVirtualHost statement here15:24
Deepsit's not exactly valid, but you can do it15:25
Fenix|workright in ports.conf15:25
Deepsnot supported != not possible15:25
yann2mmh. well it does work I tell you :)15:25
Fenix|workyou're right Deeps :)15:25

kirklandsommer: the latter part must be done manually16:46
kirklandsommer: which is the main thing i'd like to get in the Server Guide16:46
sommerkirkland: ah mmmmmm, that may be a little harder since the raid section wasn't included in the hardy guide16:46
kirklandsommer: alternatively, if you'd think we'd handle this better in the wiki, that's fine by me too16:46
Phil__yeah, oh, okay, tbh - I'm not sure if the output to route -n is correct or not - shall I stick it in a pastebin?16:46
kirklandsommer: oh, okay16:46
Phil__thanks for the help btw16:46
kirklandsommer: is there somewhere else it might land?16:47
dinsdale07Phil__, or maybe traceroute internet-address to see where it stops. Maybe it's also a dns problem?16:47
DeepsPhil__: please16:47
sommerkirkland: we could add the instructions in a hardy subsection for the jaunty guide16:47
jmedinagood to know there is support for degraded raid in hardy16:47
jmedinaid like to test it16:47
jmedinawould be greate to have that info in the official server guide16:47
sommerkirkland: that would allow put the instructions on the site at least16:48
Phil__Deeps: http://pastebin.ca/128692716:48
DeepsPhil__: is 192.168.1.254 your default gateway? can you ping it from the server?16:48
sommerkirkland: we can also look into an SRU for the hardy guide, but it will need to be re-translated so I'm not sure how much "support" the idea will get16:48
sommerkirkland: but since hardy is lts...16:49
kirklandsommer: okay, how about this ....16:49
Phil__yes it is and sometimes it works, like about 10 minutes ago, and othertimes, like just now, I'm getting 'destination host unreachable'16:49
DeepsPhil__: do other machines on your lan get that same problem?16:49
kirklandsommer: i think we should create https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DegradedRAID16:50
Phil__nope, never as far as I'm aware16:50
Phil__I tried a fresh NIC as well to see if it was the hardware16:50
DeepsPhil__: could be a dodgy nic in the server, dodgy cable linking from the server to the switch, dodgy switchport, dodgy wireless if you're using that, try changing those bits around, as it doens't sound like a software problem16:50
sommerkirkland: sounds good to me, is it possible to put a link to the page in the updated package readme or somewhere users's will find it16:51
DeepsPhil__: also check for IP conflicts - is anyone else on the lan using the same IP as your server?16:51
Phil__no, its the only static IP and its well out of the dhcp range16:51
sommerkirkland: I was thinking about non-irc users and users not following the raid bug16:51
kirklandsommer: that might be possible16:51
kirklandsommer: i could ask about putting it in the grub postinst16:51
Phil__could it be anything to do with my / directory being completely full?16:52
kirklandsommer: detect if you're upgrading from an old version of grub that doesn't support boot degraded16:52
DeepsPhil__: possible but highly unlikely16:52
kirklandsommer: if so, refer the user to read the documentation at http://.......16:52
kirklandsommer: could you get the framework of a page up at DegradedRAID ?16:52
Phil__okay, fair enough... I'll swap some bits around and see if I get any joy16:52
kirklandsommer: i'll fill in the details....16:52
sommerkirkland: sounds like it would work to me16:53
sommerkirkland: sure, I can work on that this week16:53
kirklandsommer: i'll work through the sru process to get such a link up16:53
kirklandsommer: cool, ping me when you get it16:53
sommerkirkland: are the updates already released?16:53
kirklandsommer: yes, last week16:54
sommerkirkland: okay, I'll try to work on that this evening as well16:55
kirklandsommer: nice, thanks.16:56
sommerkirkland: this has started me thinking about future bug fixes that might also require documentation updates16:56
sommerkirkland: I wonder if we should work out some type of better system for doc updates16:57
kirklandsommer: yeah, i think so16:57
kirklandsommer: well, i think it could use some improvement16:57
* sommer probably just need to learn more about the translation process16:57
sommerkirkland: I'll ask the doc team and see if there are more ideas on the subject16:58
kirklandsommer: well, i saw the response to your suggestion of splitting it out of the other docs16:59
sommerkirkland: ya, couldn't hurt try :-)17:01
mgagnedoes anyone here have experience running ubuntu 8.04 as a Xen domU (paravirtualized)?17:02
jmedinamgagne: I do have some 8.04.1 xen servers both dom0 and domu hardy17:04
mgagnejmedina: I was reading about Ubuntu dropping support for dom0, I am looking at possibilities for running some 8.04 servers as domU's but am not sure what distro I should consider for dom0.17:06
jmedinamgagne: I dont think will be dropped in hardy17:07
mgagnejmedina: is the setup and configuration somewhat reasonable for hardy as a dom0?17:08
jmedinamgagne: I use xen-tools for that17:08
jmedinausing debootstrapper17:09
mgagnejmedina: ok, is your long term plan to stick with 8.04 in the future as well?17:09
jmedinamgagne: for servers yeap17:09
jmedinaeven my desktop, well all the office desktops, except laptops they are now with intrepid (kubuntu)17:10
dinsdale07Faust-C, have solved my earlier problem with the IdentLookups. They need to be in a <global> Identlookups off </global> directive, now it works17:12
nealmcbkirkland: thanks for the blazingly fast work on screen-profiles!  I got it from your ppa, screen-profiles - default profile - on hardy:  and see in bold at the bottom:  apt-check: error: no such option: --human-readable!17:25
kirklandnealmcb: oh bummer17:26
kirklandnealmcb: let me take that out17:26
kirklandnealmcb: that's only available on hardy17:26
kirklandnealmcb: fixed uploaded to my ppa17:32
ryan8403_workhi i'm wanting to use vmbuilder to create a paravirtual image for xen, do i need to change the line in the config file referring to hvm? if so what to?18:00
jojo1224hi18:34
nealmcbkirkland: it is built and installable now - looks good now.  thanks!19:05

lukehasnonameHas anyone taken a look at "Pro Ubuntu Server Administration" by Sander van Vugt?19:07
jjesseit is on my amazon wish list19:08
lukehasnonameHis first books was kind of ok, the second books looks like he went a little more in depth (these both being the "beginner" books)19:08
leonelhttp://www.ubuntu.com/products/whatisubuntu/serveredition/features/ec2   <-- GREAT !!!!  good to see ubuntu server spreading everywhere19:46
Faust-Cdinsdale07: sweet20:08
Faust-Clukehasnoname: i havent found a really "enterprise" grade book for ubuntu20:09
Faust-Clike none detail using advanced auth methods,20:09
^efil4ejkeoDHi, im trying to set up a server with ubuntu linux. However I have never ever touched a linux PC before.20:12
^efil4ejkeoDWhat I would like to accomplish is a server who backes up every other computer connected to the network. And can reinstall them when they are crashed20:12
^efil4ejkeoDIve searched the internet, but all help files are still not very clear. :( Can anyone plz say which programms i need?20:13
Faust-C^efil4ejkeoD: i suggest you get some books if you're really wanting to learn20:14
uvirtbotFaust-C: Error: "efil4ejkeoD:" is not a valid command.20:14
^efil4ejkeoDi think i need samba for getting networks up. I know have my server visible in my network. I can create files and maps but not in every map..20:14
frojndHello there20:15
^efil4ejkeoDTrue, i looked for: beginning ubuntu server LTS on bol.com20:15
frojndI need an asisstance here.20:15
^efil4ejkeoDSo anyone who wants to start with ubuntu needs to learn books first? :P20:15
Faust-Cwell read a book20:15
frojndMy disks are falling...all of the sudden I start getting those messages: Buffer I/O error on device sda3, logical drive xyxy Aborting journal on device sda3, on device sda2,... Write error on swap-device20:16
frojndIs there a way to fix my disks ?20:16
frojndI did unplug the cable and start server again...20:16
frojndThis was also the only option at that time to restart comptuer20:16
frojndI'm assuming my disks will crashed eventually... s Is there a way to prevent or to slow down this process ?20:16
^efil4ejkeoDhow old are your disks ? aint there a way to read there SMART statistics?20:17
^efil4ejkeoDtheir*20:17
frojnd^efil4ejkeoD: about 4 years they both SATA20:18
uvirtbotfrojnd: Error: "efil4ejkeoD:" is not a valid command.20:18
frojndhuh?20:19
^efil4ejkeoDmy name starts with an ^ ;)20:19
frojndas a command :)20:19
^efil4ejkeoDye20:19
^efil4ejkeoDbut do you know how to read SMART statistics out of hdd?20:19
frojnd^efil4ejkeoD: no idea20:20
uvirtbotfrojnd: Error: "efil4ejkeoD:" is not a valid command.20:20
^efil4ejkeoDIm not really of any assitence with linux here. I've never touched it before, but im advised: "read a book" when i asked asked my question20:20
^efil4ejkeoDanyway.. drives have SMART statistics which tells you the status of your harddrive20:20
^efil4ejkeoDin windows you can easily read them by using programms like speedfan20:21
^efil4ejkeoDor sometimes you are able to read them in the bios20:21
^efil4ejkeoDit tells you exactly how many pieces of the harddrive are broken and when its time to change the drive20:21
^efil4ejkeoDIf the SMART tells you to change, i'm not sure if there is any methode to slow down the proces other than turn of your machine....20:22
frojnd*efil4ejkeoD: I'm sure linux can do that and even more to slow down the process just don't know20:22
^efil4ejkeoDah, first try to read them out20:22
^efil4ejkeoDgoogle for smart hdd or smthing :)20:22
^efil4ejkeoDCan you help me out maybe. I want to have a programm that backes up all other machines in my network, and can reinstall them when  a computer is crashed. Is that possible? It's actually just windows home server but then in ubuntu server.20:24
frojndI'm afraid I cant.20:27
frojndHaven't really used server for backuping my data, though apperantly I should :S20:27
^efil4ejkeoDwhat are you using it for then? file server?20:28
maltepaltei have mysql installed on a ubuntu machine, with a lot of power - quad xeon cpu:s, and a large raid volume with 15k rpm disks.  however, when benchmarking with a simple script that creates a database in mysql, and then creates 1000 tables inside the db, i get extremely poor performance; 5 tables created per second.  compare that with my laptop, that gets about 150 tables per Asecond20:29
frojndI'm using it for somesort of media center. I have installed on it ampache for listening my favourite music from one location, for torrents to DL some fancy music abroad since I can't buy all the cds, for testing php pages, for mysql database, for storing my DVDs, and ofcourse for programming :P20:30
frojndAnd now I'm a little scared since I don't have dual or backup disks..20:31
^efil4ejkeoDYou might be able to clone them in time maybe?20:32
frojndI can use them, as we sepak, but not so sure....20:32
^efil4ejkeoDIf you want to keep the data, you should clone them or get an image of them as fast as possible. But that is only useful if the problem really are the disks themselves20:33
frojndwhat else could it be ?20:34
^efil4ejkeoDI have no clue. I've never used linux before.. and im not a programmer :). I do know, however, that when a disk pefrmance is poor you shuuld check for the SMART status. That will tell you what is wrong with your disk, mostly.20:35
frojnd*efil4ejkeoD: if the sorage is 500gb how big would be the image ?20:35
frojndor the clone.. haven't really done this before20:35
^efil4ejkeoDi think the same size if the disk is full20:35
frojndhuh20:36
^efil4ejkeoDan image is actually a clone, but then stored on a existing hard drive. A clone is really a clone of the harddisk itself. So you can make a clone with an image.20:36
^efil4ejkeoDdo you follow that one? :P20:36
frojndheh, I'm working in my head :D20:36
^efil4ejkeoD^^20:37
uvirtbot^efil4ejkeoD: Error: "^" is not a valid command.20:37
^efil4ejkeoDwhen you copy a DVD to your harddrive, you can make an image from the DVD. This image is 1 file which consist of all the files on the DVD20:37
^efil4ejkeoDthis file is as large as the DVD itself.20:37
^efil4ejkeoDso the image is a clone of the dvd. But you haven't got 2 DVD's. So when you put the image from the DVD on a new DVD, then you have cloned your dvd.20:38
^efil4ejkeoDbut thats not really the point here :)20:38
^efil4ejkeoDyou want to know how to clone a 500 GB harddisk20:38
frojnd^efil4ejkeoD: aha20:38
uvirtbotfrojnd: Error: "efil4ejkeoD:" is not a valid command.20:38
^efil4ejkeoDand for that question i do not have an answer :(20:39
sommerkirkland: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DegradedRAID created, and I've linked to the intrepid config options... I think that's what you were looking for?20:39
^efil4ejkeoDI only know windows alternatives20:39
frojnd^efil4ejkeoD: ofcourse they will say to buy a new disk :D20:39
uvirtbotfrojnd: Error: "efil4ejkeoD:" is not a valid command.20:39
^efil4ejkeoDyou have to buy new disks :P But you want all your data from the old one, on the new one20:39
frojndThe only problem is that I can get the lowest WD external 1TB for 100EUR20:39
^efil4ejkeoDyou don't need an external hard drive for cloning20:40
frojnd^efil4ejkeoD: I know but they are the chepeaset storage alternative :D20:40
uvirtbotfrojnd: Error: "efil4ejkeoD:" is not a valid command.20:40
^efil4ejkeoDinternal?20:40
frojnd^efil4ejkeoD: I have SATA and not SATA2 which costs less than SATA <-those two are "internal"20:41
uvirtbotfrojnd: Error: "efil4ejkeoD:" is not a valid command.20:41
^efil4ejkeoDwhere are you from btw?20:41
frojndslovenia20:41
^efil4ejkeoDah k. Im from holland20:41
^efil4ejkeoDhmm.. I think i can't help you any further then :(20:41
^efil4ejkeoDi don't know much about computers20:41
frojnd^efil4ejkeoD: no worries someone will :)20:41
uvirtbotfrojnd: Error: "efil4ejkeoD:" is not a valid command.20:41
^efil4ejkeoDhehe :)20:42
Faust-Chow much space would you guys recommend for 70+ users high volume traffic20:54
hadsHOw long is a piece of string.20:56
jjesse620:56
geniiFaust-C: For what, their home dirs?20:57
jmalishi! how to skip disk checking on starup (fschk)? Thank You!21:12
genii"ESC" ?21:15
geniiAnd of course there's the ever-dangerous and not to be recommended replacement of  0 1        with  0 0        in fstab21:17
Faust-Cgenii: no for email period21:27
geniiFaust-C: I'd think 4-8Gb would suffice. A lot depends on if they are leaving much mail also on there, like imap21:29
Faust-Cwell atm its pop3 and alot of the mail is old or internal spam21:31
Deepshow long is a peice of string?21:32
jmarsden|workFaust-C: Can you du -sh /var/mail/ (or equivalent) to see how much space their POP3 mail takes up now, then use (for example) 2x that as rough a starting point for their email disk space needs?21:35
Faust-Cjmarsden|work: sadly atm the email server is a XP machine (done before i got here)21:37
Faust-Cand i cant afford to screw up considering that email is necessary to function21:37
jmarsden|workFaust-C: You could (a) still find out how much space the mail is taking up (Look at mailboxes in Exchange if that is what they use, or use one of many disk spacetools for Windows if the mail is in flat files)  (b) consider setting upo new mailserver with LVM so you can change partition sizes later if necessary?21:57
geniiOr enforce quotas on /var/mail or so21:58
Faust-Cjmarsden|work: no exchange, mdaemon22:08
Faust-Cim rebuilding network22:08
Faust-Cgenii: and yes that is a must this go round22:08
=== erichammond1 is now known as erichammond
Faust-Cdo you have to install the pop3d part for dovecot?22:15
jmarsden|workFaust-C: Only if you want to offer POP3 service to email users.. if all will use IMAP I don't think you *need* to instyall dovecot-pop3d.22:24
Faust-Ckk22:45
