[13:13] Hello everyone, is anyone familiar with how ubuntu detects whether a monitor is plugged in or not? [13:14] Memfis, sort of...why? [13:15] I'm trying to use xubuntu as a headless server that I vnc into. but whenever no monitor is attached X starts in failsafe mode. [13:15] Memfis, that is correct [13:15] How do I prevent it from checking? [13:15] you dont [13:16] so theres no way to run (x)ubuntu in headless mode? [13:16] you take out the auto checking, you lose mouse and keyboard [13:16] well....what you can do is....set it up with a monitor [13:17] once its up, remove the monitor [13:17] but then if it reboots, I loose X & vnc [13:17] let me look into some other options.... [13:17] thank you. [13:17] I posted to the forums too : http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1012400 [13:19] here are instructions for redhat.... [13:19] http://linuxshellaccount.blogspot.com/2008/10/how-to-set-up-headless-x-server-on.html [13:19] with only slight modifications, you should be able to get it running in ubuntu [13:19] BTW, if ya get it to work, how 'bout writing a how-to for the wiki? [13:19] sure :) [13:20] I'll have a read. Thank you. [13:23] vidd: u have any experience with the alt installer? [13:23] R1cochet, tons of it....its all i use [13:24] whats the diff between that and livecd? [13:26] the alt requires less system resource to install, works on more hardware "out of the box" isnt sluggish, and is based on the debian installer that has been used for more then 10 years (as opposed to the live installer that is less then 3 years old) [13:26] but they have the same preinstalled packages? [13:27] oh...and the alt cd provides more installation options (cli-only, OEM mode, etc) [13:27] yeah...al the same repos [13:28] is there any way to install with only certain packages? [13:28] and if you do the "generic" install, both the live and the alt give you the same final product (provided the live doesnt fail horribly for you) [13:28] such as? [13:29] without thunderbird,abiword,gnumeric... [13:29] R1cochet, there are a few things that you would want to do [13:30] ...listen music player [13:30] first, you will want to do the CLI-only install [13:30] this leaves you with just the command prompt [13:30] (you cant do this with the live cd) [13:30] ok [13:31] Once the cli-only install is complete, you will want to add packages individually [13:31] you will want to use "apt-get install" with the "--no-install-recommends" switch [13:32] what does that switch do? [13:33] prevents apt-get from installing packages marked as "rommends" [13:33] ok but will it grab the necissities? [13:33] when you install pakage A, there are other packages that may be needed.....apt-get makes sure this happens automatically [13:34] ok [13:34] 2 more things [13:34] package A requires package B, package C is a recommends, and package D is a suggest.... [13:34] how do i get the xubuntu desktop [13:35] by default, apt-get would install package A, B, and C [13:35] R1cochet, you dont..... [13:35] you build a custome xubuntu-like desktop [13:36] remember, you dont want thunderbird (part of the xubuntu desktop) [13:36] ahh [13:36] the packages you will want are: [13:38] actually.... [13:38] you will want to customize that for yourself..... [13:38] but you will likely want gdm [13:38] hal handles xserver stuff [13:40] xorg, xfdesktop4-data, and a host of other apps [13:41] you MIGHT find it easier to do the basic install and run "sudo apt-get autoremove --purge [undesired packages entered here] [13:42] does this help any? [13:42] ok [13:42] yes tons thank you [13:43] if ya need any further help, let me know [13:43] y autoremove and not just remove? [13:43] * vidd needs to go smoke before his shift starts =] [13:43] £ãugh¡ñg Òut £öuÐ [13:43] R1cochet, autoremove gets rid of dependencies and recommends that are no longer required [13:44] so rather then running a second command "sudo apt-get autoremove --purge" you just combine the two commands into one line =] [13:45] "work smarter, not harder" [13:45] now....ill be back in like 10 minutes [13:46] ok cool [13:51] <[1]Andy> hi i did it! [13:51] <[1]Andy> it works!! [13:51] <[1]Andy> r1 [13:51] <[1]Andy> uh well i tried something...i downloaded x chat and tried to..well how do you install stuff in xubuntu? [13:53] applications>system>synaptic [13:53] <[1]Andy> yeah then? [13:53] select what u want to install [13:53] <[1]Andy> yeaaa.. [13:53] <[1]Andy> thax a thousand times [13:53] No Problem [13:53] glad u got it to work [13:53] <[1]Andy> if i was not in love already i would have told you how much i love you :P [13:54] <[1]Andy> which time zone you from? [13:54] gmt+8 [13:54] <[1]Andy> 1 min..left [13:54] <[1]Andy> ah [13:54] u? [13:54] <[1]Andy> okay ttyl then [13:54] enjoy [13:54] <[1]Andy> and lets hope from xubuntu [13:54] <[1]Andy> 5.5+ [13:54] <[1]Andy> India [13:54] cool [13:54] california [13:54] <[1]Andy> bye ^^ [13:54] <[1]Andy> ah [13:54] later [13:54] <[1]Andy> you saw bush getting hit yesterday? [13:54] nope? [13:55] <[1]Andy> shit i am late laterz [13:55] hahaha deserves it [13:57] R1cochet, so you UTC MUNUS 8, not PLUS 8 [13:58] er....GMT [13:58] ahh §orry [13:58] so is autoremove --purge same as complete removal in synaptic? [13:59] R1cochet, so how goes it? is your install in progress? [13:59] R1cochet, not quite..... [13:59] naw ive been on xubuntu for about 4mo [13:59] but im gonna do a clean install soon once i get new hdd [13:59] im outa room [14:00] auto-remove --purge is complete removal of the app AND the dependencies..... [14:00] ok [14:00] will it also delete the folders from the dependencies? [14:00] synaptic only --purge 's the main file, and remove the dependencies [14:01] yes [14:01] would like to clean up all remnaces of those programs [14:01] ok cool [14:01] then you want to apt-get autoremove --purge.....not use synaptic [14:01] alright thank you much [14:08] vidd: do u copy dvd's with a gui? [14:09] i tried k9 b4 but couldnt get preview to work so i didnt try to copy a movie [14:09] wanted to remove trailers and the like [14:15] R1cochet, i can copy with brasero [14:15] but i dont edit === don2 is now known as don903 [14:33] Hey all, I'm having some trouble running Xubuntu on old hardware. I can get specific hardware information if needed, but here's the issue: After cycling through a bunch of video modes, I get an error that says there is a problem with my video configuration. It gives me an option to configure the graphics, but never lets me actually do anything. It just keeps restarting the window manager and giving me the same error. [14:33] I want to tell it that it's OK to run in low-graphics mode (it's OLD hardware), but I don't know how, or if that is even possible [14:34] in fact, I got that to happen one time by booting into recovery mode, but I haven't managed to get that to work since [14:52] don903, This sounds almost opposite to what I'm trying to achieve. [14:53] I'm trying to tell it NOT to run in low graphics mode (failsafe mode) [14:54] hehe... don903 if ya unplug the monitor, ya might be able to get in and fix it =] [14:54] lol, exactly :o) [14:56] vidd, I've looked at the url you provided, but I cant find where init calls Xvfb [14:56] cd /etc/init.d [14:56] cat * | grep Xvfb [14:57] no results [14:57] same with little 'x' [14:58] hmmm locate cant find it either. [15:00] will anything break if I install XFree86-Xvfb ?? [15:05] Memfis, you will probably have to remove xorg..... but i dont think anything will break..... [15:06] if it doesm replacing xorg SHOULD fix it [15:06] \just pay attention to what gets removed [15:09] Memfis, im looking for other guides...perhaps ill find one for xorg [15:11] Memfis, check out this guide! http://osdcm.com/home/tool/installing-xubuntu-as-a-headless-server [15:12] I've seen that. all it does is setup with no gui. [15:12] I want the gui, just no monitor [15:13] then how about http://stevenharman.net/blog/archive/2008/12/13/vnc-to-a-headless-ubuntu-box.aspx [15:16] nope. that only works when X works without a monitor [15:16] I need to be able to get X working without a monitor. The vnc part I have working already [15:17] I just tried sommat, but need to wait 5 mins for box to reboot. [15:19] I think adding driver=vesa and [15:19] HorizSync 30-85 [15:19] VertRefresh 48-120 [15:19] might fix it, but just trying to check which section this goes into. [15:20] I'VE DONE IT!!!! YAY! [15:21] adding driver=vesa stopped the failsafe. Then all you've got to do is fix the resolution with HorizSync & VertRefresh for the resolution. [15:22] now to find out the HorizSync & VertRefresh options for 1024x768 and which section they go into [15:22] Memfis, nice [15:30] updated post http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1012400 [16:02] <[1]Andy> hi ^^ [16:02] <[1]Andy> r1 still awake? [16:03] <[1]Andy> the add or remove or syn. file manager installles file after downloading them [16:04] <[1]Andy> what if i have already downloaded .tar.bz2 file? [16:04] <[1]Andy> any command i can give it to install from the file i downloaded? [16:05] <[1]Andy> okay nvm i gtg sleep :P [16:09] The monitor unplugging idea didn't work =( [16:09] I looked at xorg.conf but it looks like a default file -- it has no specific information [16:10] don after spening the last couple of days playing with xorg configuration I might be able to help you. [16:11] Could you give me a bit of time to finish checking my current setup and make a cup of tea? [16:12] Of course [16:12] I'm not in a hurry [16:13] still waiting for my remote box to come back up. [16:35] don903, OK, I've fixed mine (Yay). Remind me of the problem you have with X on old hardware. [16:36] it tries to initialize my video several times, then it does, in low graphics mode..I'm guessing 800x600x24 and tells me there's a problem configuring my video hardware [16:36] and presents me options to reconfigure it (which does nothing) and other stuff (also do nothing) [16:37] oddly, sometimes when I "startx" from the commandline, it'll boot into low graphics mode without complaining, but then the mouse isn't working and I may or may not get a HAL error [16:37] ONCE, by chance, it all worked fine [16:37] just to tease me :| [16:38] lol [16:38] ok, What would be your ideal setup? 1024x768@24 bit depth? [16:38] I looked at xorf.conf but there's no specific settings in there; looks like a blank default file [16:39] yes that would be ideal and I am fairly certain the card supports that mode [16:39] I can deal with 800x600x24 though [16:39] yup, default file means everything is auto detected. we'll have to edit that [16:40] you do manage to start X tho? [16:40] not into a usable state [16:40] the pisser is that the mode it uses to tell me my graphics hardware sucks is fine for my purposes! [16:41] ok, thats one step further than I started with :) [16:41] are you familiar with linux command line? [16:41] very slightly [16:42] are you able to use a terminal on your current setup? Do you have another pc you can use to remotely access it if everything goes wrong? [16:42] Is openssh setup? [16:42] No, it's all pretty much default at the moment. I have a user account. [16:42] If everything goes wrong I'll just re-install [16:43] you don't have another pc on the lan? [16:43] eg the one you're online from now? [16:43] ehhh, I'd have to bring the old beast down here into my lab... the computer in question is in my office on a network I don't control [16:44] can you ping it? [16:44] I don't think the NIC is even initialized before xorg runs [16:44] should be [16:45] I'm not sure how to check its IP from the terminal. If I could find its IP and it grabbed one from the DHCP pool then I could ping it [16:46] Ok, let me explain. You'll need to edit the xorg.conf If you cant do this from the current X setup (or if X fails to start at some point) having remote cli access would be a great help & faster than reinstalling. [16:47] Well I can reliably boot to a terminal screen. Editing xorf.conf shouldn't mess that up, right? [16:47] correct. ok that'll do fine. [16:48] sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf [16:48] ok, I'm going to run down to my office with this computer. I'll have to reconnect. Back in a few mins. [16:49] kk [16:50] 4646689 [16:52] alright xorf.conf is loaded in nano [16:54] wb [16:54] thanks [16:54] in the device section add : Driver "vesa" [16:54] so that it reads : [16:54] Section "Device" [16:54] Identifier "Configured Video Device" [16:54] Driver "vesa" [16:55] EndSection [16:55] done [16:55] !pastebin | Memfis, [16:55] Memfis,: pastebin is a service to post multiple-lined texts so you don't flood the channel. The Ubuntu pastebin is at http://paste.ubuntu.com (make sure you give us the URL for your paste - see also the channel topic) [16:55] heh [16:55] thanks ubottu will do [16:55] sorry vidd [16:56] darned bots :o) === zoredache_ is now known as zoredache [16:56] Memfis, you filled my screen with line balloons [16:56] oh? looks ok here [16:56] yeah it's 4 lines here [16:56] don edit the last section so it looks like this : http://paste.ubuntu.com/86379/ [16:57] should that be it then, Memfis? [16:57] oh, looking [16:58] ctrl-X and y to exit & save. [16:58] restart X [16:58] * don904 holds breath [16:59] ok, I'm getting that HAL error again, but I'll try rebooting in normal mode and see what happens [16:59] ok [17:01] what the hell [17:02] it's still trying a bunch of video modes [17:02] gah, same problem as before [17:03] bummer. [17:03] vesa is a driver for older hardware [17:03] oh I know [17:03] under driver = vesa add [17:03] Option "NoDDCValue" "True" [17:03] ok [17:04] don903, what does lspci say your display adaptor is? [17:04] Matrox MGA G100 rev 2 [17:06] NoDDCValue should stop it hunting for other modes. [17:06] added that line; rebooting now [17:06] I appreciate the help.. I'm totally lost. [17:07] join the club. I just wondered if the little I've learnt would help. [17:08] looks like you might need a driver [17:08] but the splash screen comes up just fine [17:08] it's /still/ hunting for different modes [17:10] who make matrox? nvidia or ati I cant remember [17:11] They're their own deal [17:11] nah. I think they're another manufacturers chipset [17:16] don904, the splash screen would come up even if there was NO display driver in the kernel [17:16] well, why can't I just continue using whatever mode that is? [17:16] I've seen the xorg desktop several times anyways [17:16] but usually not with the mouse working [17:17] when the mouse works, xorg tells me my display settings are wrong [17:17] don904, no idea =\ [17:17] and it gives me some options, none of which do anything [17:17] http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/search/?top_query=mga+linux&search=1 [17:18] once you've got drivers installed change vesa to mga [17:18] yeah [17:18] and it *should* work [17:18] yup [17:18] vesa is like "generic display* [17:19] none of these seem to include G100 [17:19] and the splash works because it is a universal setting .... just like what your POST and bios use [17:20] well why can't I just use that setting [17:20] I don't care about higher modes [17:20] I tried with 800x600 in the conf, too... no dice [17:21] try 640x480 (8) [17:22] dear god [17:22] 8 bit color [17:22] you're a madman [17:22] I'll try it just to see if it's even obeying the conf file [17:22] that is STILL better resolution then POST and bios [17:23] but its as dumb as xorg gets [17:23] POST and bios use 2 or 4 bit color (i believe) [17:24] and 400X300 resolution [17:24] the splashscreen is at least 640x480x16 [17:24] then use that [17:24] trying with 8 bit [17:25] goes into that mode but with the HAL issue (and no mouse) rebooting to see what happens [17:27] what the HELL [17:28] yes? [17:28] when I boot normally, it still tries a bunch of modes! [17:28] hal is evil [17:28] ..and starts xorg in >640x480x8 and tells me to reconfigure my graphics [17:28] ARGH [17:28] "im sorry dave.....i just can't do that!" [17:29] so it's obaying the conf but still trying other modes? [17:29] It's NOT obeying the conf [17:29] unless I "startx" from the terminal in recovery mode [17:29] and in that case there is no mouse [17:29] what monitor make and model are you using? [17:30] don904, you CAN disable hal and then manually configure xorg [17:30] "compaq" FS7600 [17:30] I thought I did manually configure xorg with Memfis's direction? [17:30] ok I'll see if I can find the hsync figures for it. [17:30] but you didnt disable hal [17:32] maybe ya might want to scare up a new display adaptor =] [17:32] http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-78288.html read second from last post. Talks about d/l matrox driver unpacking and copying mga_drv.o by hand [17:34] http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/support/drivers/previous/display/#Linux I'd try mgadriver-4.1.tar.gz from 2004 section [17:35] hold up..... [17:35] let me check synaptic first [17:36] mouse can be easier to fix if you get a working display [17:37] don904, sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-mga [17:37] what does that say? [17:37] nice find! [17:38] did you change display adaptors on this since instalation? [17:38] xserver-xorg-video-mga is already the newest version [17:38] No the hardware hasn't changed at all [17:39] yes to vesa. [17:39] don904, then "remove --purge" and then install it again [17:39] sorry I'll shutup. missread q. [17:39] Memfis, no worries [17:41] oh, uh oh [17:41] ok I deleted it but ehm [17:41] I don't know how to get an IP address [17:41] or if my NIC is even initialized [17:41] ifconfig will tell you your current ip [17:42] I don't have an external IP [17:42] the only interface it seems to have listed is "local loopback" [17:42] don904, got the cd you installed with>? [17:42] yes [17:42] so slap that puppy in, and edit your sources.list to only check the cd [17:43] or.... [17:43] if you can plug a network cable into that system, you can run "sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart" [17:44] did that, it says [OK] [17:44] but ifconfig doesn't list the interface (I think) [17:44] edit your /etc/network/interfaces file with the following: [17:45] (sorry....pastebin isnt loading) [17:47] http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/86420/ [17:47] its probably already there....just commented out (#) [17:47] it wasn't [17:47] save the change and run the restart command again [17:47] where you put eth0 was l0 and where you put dhcp was loopback [17:48] magic! [17:48] whoah!........ [17:48] you need lo [17:48] oh [17:48] still shows up in ifconfig... [17:49] but eth0 does now too [17:49] with an IP [17:49] [for later use] http://paste.ubuntu.com/86421/ Has xorg.conf settings for monitor [17:49] and the IP is valid! [17:49] http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/86422/ [17:49] (should let me access outside... the IT people had to add my MAC) [17:49] ok I'll edit that again [17:49] set your interfaces as such (if lo was not re-added for you already) [17:50] of course the IP address is valid.... [17:51] you could also set a static IP, but you would need the IP, the netmask and gateway addresses for that [17:51] no, if they didn't add my MAC to their tables, I'd get a "valid" IP but not one that lets me access the internet, but it would still appear valid to me without seeing the hostname. [17:51] don904, you are getting a valid IP..... [17:52] Yes :) [17:52] I just reinstalled the drivers [17:52] but your IT peeps use MAC filtering [17:53] what MAC filtering does is, it will assign anyone who connects with an IP address from the DHCP server....just wont let any traffic pass [17:53] =] [17:54] this is why my home wifi network uses WEP plus MAC filtering..... [17:54] people can spoof a MAC address after they crack your WEP key [17:54] lets the slugs THINK they cracked my home network....but no data pass =] [17:55] but how they going to determine what MAC will have permissions? [17:55] by watching packets for a while [18:00] alright, so I should try again after reinstalling those drivers? And add the parameters that Memfis found for my monitor? [18:00] I got distracted... now that I got an IP I decided to apt-get ircii and try it out ^_^ [18:01] so exciting! === zoredache_ is now known as zoredache === R[a]ndom is now known as HotSwap [20:38] Hello, I inserted a usb NIC into my pc with xubuntu installed. Networks were found, I attempted to connect to mine, put in the WEP 26 digit hex key, waited, but i keep getting a popup window asking for the key over and over again after putting it in. Is there any way to get around this? [20:39] Datz1, i use wicd instead of NM applet .... cuzz NM is annoying like this [20:40] vidd, thanks for the response, but I don't understand what to do. [20:40] is wicd an applet that is installed on xubuntu by default? [20:40] get the app wicd [20:40] I see [20:41] no...it is not even in the repos so far as i know [20:41] ok [20:41] so install it by cd, then kill the regular network manager and start the new one? [20:42] no....get the deb file of the internet [20:43] ah, I like the sound of that more [20:44] http://downloads.sourceforge.net/wicd/wicd_1.5.6_all.deb?modtime=1228387182&big_mirror=0 [20:44] then "sudo dpkg -i [path/to/deb/file] [20:44] awesome, thanks [20:44] then "sudo apt-get install wicd [20:45] if only my flash drive was able to be mounted... [20:45] Datz1, you will get errors with the first part, but the apt-get install will fix it all up [20:45] ok, thanks I will try [20:53] vidd, humm, package wicd is not available, but is referedred to by another p[ackage, this may mean that the package is missing...etc [20:53] did you run "dpkg -i" [20:53] yes [20:53] did you get a host of errors? [20:53] I'll to the whole thing again [20:53] yes I got some errors [20:54] ok... [20:54] sudo apt-get install -f [20:55] better? [20:55] that seems to have worked [20:55] now enjoy =] [20:55] what does this mean? Try and connect with the network manager again?\ [20:56] no...connect with wicd [20:56] nm is now gone from your system [20:56] humm, so I shouldn't see a icon with two pc's in the tray? [20:56] do you have a computer screens icon on your panels? [20:56] yes [20:56] that is wicd [20:56] ah, nice [20:56] use that [20:57] trying, thanks [20:57] you will need to set up the "advanced" options for your wifi [20:57] restarting as I see not networks.. [20:58] this usb nic is shit I think [20:58] !language | Datz1 [20:58] Datz1: Please watch your language and topic to help keep this channel family friendly. [20:59] taking a min to restart.. [21:00] =\ why are we restarting? [21:02] what does "lsusb" say the chipset is? [21:03] wolfwalker, "sudo mount [path/to/drive] [21:03] Realtek [21:03] Drive is /sda1 [21:03] Datz1, it HAS to say more than that [21:03] So /dev/sda1? [21:04] ok, let me increase the font size so I don't have to go back and forth :) [21:04] wolfwalker, yes [21:04] ok [21:05] Bus 001 Devuce 005 ID 0bda:8187 Realteck Semiconductor Corp. [21:05] Thanks vidd. I'm used to gui, but this slow P4 thing won't run Ubuntu. [21:06] Datz1, http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=5090337 [21:07] vidd it says it can't find it in fstab [21:07] wolfwalker, a P4 wont run xubuntu????/ [21:07] Yes, but it wouldn't run Ubuntu. [21:08] and you cant find it in thunar? [21:08] Nope [21:08] I'm running ubuntu with a p4 now :) [21:08] is this a new drive? [21:09] No, it's just an internal drive that is not the one I installed Xubuntu to. [21:09] vidd, I guess lsusb does not way what the chipset is [21:09] It's a slave, I installed Xubuntu to master. [21:09] as I see it does in the link you gave [21:10] if this is a chipset RTL8187B [21:11] wolfwalker, the second drive was there during install and you didnt put it in the file syste? [21:12] wolfwalker, run gparted [21:12] you might need to install it [21:12] I didn't put it in anything, just installed Xubuntu to the other hard drive. [21:12] yeah..... [21:13] i would have set up the partitions manually, so that when the install was complete, the system would have seen the drive [21:13] But in terminal, sudo fdisk -l shows it as sda1 [21:14] i doubt that [21:14] sda1 is your master not the salve [21:14] the slave would be sdb [21:14] * vidd has to go home now [21:15] thanks anyway vidd :) [21:15] Well all I know is sda is the one without the Linux partitions and sdb is the one with all the Xubuntu stuff. [21:16] vidd is gone wolfwalker :( [21:16] me too, cya [21:16] bye [21:16] I know [21:16] I was saying that in case anyone else could help me [21:16] anyway [21:16] i can, hopefully [21:16] hold on, let me review the log [21:17] okay [21:17] so can you give me a quick summary of what you are trying to do?
