ballAnyone here use Edubuntu with LTSP?01:27
ball(or vice versa)01:28
Ahmuck-Jris there a way to tell from the client if it is fat or thin?02:04
Ahmuck-Jrnm, it's easy.  it's caching everything at this point02:11
Nubae-laptopjust check to see if in the terminal you see the server or the client02:17
Ahmuck-Jrlet's say we want to try blender.  does it buffer everything in the fat client's memory?02:21
Nubae-laptopyes, though u can set it to use local or server swap space too02:21
Nubae-laptopIve never run tests to see if it maxes out the memory02:22
Nubae-laptopwould be interesting to see what happens02:22
Ahmuck-Jri just tried to use smc on a client to see how it would work. it was unusable.  i'm wondering if to run such beasts if one needs a fatter client02:23
Nubae-laptopsmc?02:23
Ahmuck-Jrk, been trying a few other childrens games and software.  wine is kinda iffy at times02:46
Ahmuck-Jroutside of wine those that run on linux work sorta ok, i assume it's cause my fat clients are not all that fat. 1Gz with 128 or 258Mb ram02:46
Nubae-laptopcan u write down which apps u try, and rate them02:47
Nubae-laptop128mb is really little02:47
Nubae-laptop256 is recommended, and with 512 it will be quite nice02:47
Ahmuck-Jrwhat would you like me to test against?02:48
Ahmuck-Jrmachine wise02:48
Nubae-laptopremember that essentially a fat client is the same as having your box run a normal ubuntu... so whatever speed u normally get on the machine if u installed to a hard drive is the speed ull get02:48
Ahmuck-Jrhrm, ok02:48
Nubae-laptopbut u can play with the window manager of course02:48
Ahmuck-Jrthat's what i thought and i was under the impression these might do that.  however, i'll look at the specs on them and see02:48
Nubae-laptopusing xubuntu would be much faster02:48
Ahmuck-Jrxubuntu on the server?02:49
Nubae-laptopram is the big kicker... Im sure if u enable swap it will go faster02:49
Ahmuck-Jrhow about openbox, via crashbang?02:49
Nubae-laptopno, in fatclient chroot02:49
Nubae-laptopanything u like really02:49
Nubae-laptopits just changing the packages that are mentioned in the script02:49
Ahmuck-Jrenable swap for the fat client?  does the swap use the local hard disk ?02:49
Nubae-laptopit uses what u tell it to use02:50
Nubae-laptopserver swap or local swap02:50
Ahmuck-Jrthe local hard disk would be faster than trying to send swap over the wire02:50
* Ahmuck-Jr thinks02:50
Nubae-laptopdepends on how much is sent02:50
Nubae-laptopit should be minimal unless u run with 128mb of course02:50
Nubae-laptopin which case a snappier windows manager is probably a better idea02:51
Nubae-laptopu could try sugar too, that only needs 55mb02:51
Ahmuck-Jrk, i'll check mem specs.  pc166 mem is about 40.00 for two 256mb chips02:51
Nubae-laptopsounds expensive02:51
Ahmuck-Jrso at that point it makes sense to purchase new mobo, procs, and mem02:51
Nubae-laptopI can get it over here much cheaper02:52
Ahmuck-Jrwhere r u at?02:52
Nubae-laptopvienna, Austria02:52
Nubae-laptopthere are second hand shops here that carry lots of that stuff, at virtually nothing02:52
Ahmuck-Jrhttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E1682014630202:53
Nubae-laptopI calculated I could build a terminal with screen for under 80$02:53
Ahmuck-Jrit's coming down02:53
Ahmuck-Jri'm very rural, and the closest second hand shop would be 4 hours02:53
Nubae-laptopah... yeah... and of course they dont carry that online :-)02:53
Nubae-laptopu checked ebay02:56
Nubae-laptop?02:56
Ahmuck-Jrnope02:59
Ahmuck-Jrwe get these auctions that sell computers in lots basically03:00
Ahmuck-Jrso i've been looking at those03:00
Ahmuck-Jrwindows xp key is on them, so i would suspect they might run a bit faster03:00
Ahmuck-Jrk. well this is a nice start.  i did notice an improvement in speed on inet and office so that was nice03:09
Ahmuck-Jryou mentioned enabling swap on the client.  just create a linux swap partition or is this something that needs to be enabled in the client configuration ?03:10
Nubae-laptopno needs to be enabled03:10
Nubae-laptopI can add it to the script, its a couple lines... but its getting late now, remind me tomorrow03:10
Ahmuck-Jryes, it's very late for me03:11
Ahmuck-Jri'll remind you then.  thx again Nubae-laptop i'll play around with my configurations03:12
Ahmuck-Jrand post a "tried" list out03:12

generalsnusI have a problem with users unable to mount their USB drives on our thinclients. We use Xubuntu LTSP servers..and authenticate users against M$ server 2003. previously this had worked great.. but   somwhere along with some updates, it must have been broken. I remeber editing a config file to get this working in the first place.. but cant remember witch..  Also adding users to a linux group(fuse), wont work since the 08:36
generalsnushow can i add a group that is called " domain^users "  to a group in xubuntu that is called "FUSE"?08:51
generalsnusCan somone help me troubleshoot this error mesage? i get it when i try to mount a USB drive: A security policy in place prevents this sender from sending this message to this recipient, see message bus configuration file (rejected message had interface "org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume" member "Mount" error name "(unset)" destination "org.freedesktop.Hal").'09:35
generalsnushow can i get usb disk to mount automaticly on desktop in xubuntu? or how can i make a application launcher on desktop..with the command: thunar /media/$USER/usbdisk-sda110:10
RichEdgeneralsnus: I suggest you also try asking in #ltsp11:27
RichEdwe all use the same LTSP and the guys there are well up to speed on ubuntu11:28
RichEdsbalneav should also be around later here and there ... he is on canada time11:28
ballIf I didn't have to be here today, I could try out Edubuntu (and send out a bunch of resumes)15:28
ballhello Ahmuck15:37
ballbrb15:37
Ahmuckhi ball !15:39
sbalneavMorning all15:56
ballhello16:00
LaserJockmorgs: so does sugar-hulahop have to be rebuilt every time there's a new firefox/xulrunner version?17:32
Ahmuck-Jrow if it does17:38
balloooh... I could almost try Sugar now if it weren't for my 12.5" screen.17:43
ballI have a Xubuntu box ready.17:43
LaserJockball: 12.5" is too small?17:46
Ahmuck-Jrsomeone point me to sugar?!17:46
Ahmuck-Jrvia html link?17:46
LaserJockAhmuck-Jr: the project or do you want to install it?17:46
Ahmuck-Jri'm really curious now.  the project so i can review it17:46
LaserJockhttp://sugarlabs.org/go/Main_Page17:47
Ahmuck-Jrhow does sugar work with ubuntu?  does that come up as the desktop replacement?17:49
ballLaserJock: it is at 80 DPI, but it that way.17:49
Ahmuck-Jrwork with ubuntu ltsp17:49
ball(and the monitor's not up to more than 80 dpi)17:49
LaserJockAhmuck-Jr: you can have it just be like Gnome or KDE, a login option17:51
LaserJockAhmuck-Jr: I run it in the emulator on my Gnome desktop now17:51
LaserJockas I don't need to run it full time17:51
Ahmuck-JrLaserJock: i thought sugar was the entire desktop.  is there a way to force it that way for kids?17:54
LaserJockAhmuck-Jr: what do you mean?17:54
ballrun it in place of your window manager?17:54
LaserJockif you just install it you can do that17:54
Ahmuck-Jrone thing i've looked at is separating ubuntu/kubuntu/xubuntu/crunchbang/opengeu and their menus17:57
Ahmuck-Jrso that their default menus are intact allowing the user to use a default install of that particular flavour of *untu17:58
Ahmuck-Jrwell, desktop, being gnome, kde, openbox, sugar17:58
LaserJockthat's a tough nut to crack17:59
Ahmuck-Jrsame distro, separate desktop based on user preferences, or17:59
LaserJockwith gnome and kde it's somewhat easy to do17:59
LaserJockbecause they often set gnome and kde specifc flags in their .desktop files17:59
Ahmuck-JrNubae's fat clients are going to force me into learning python and QT so i can program a gui for fat/thin client host administration17:59
LaserJockbut for just general menu entries it's not easy to say18:00
ballI would like to be able to launch the menu as a separate X client, for when I'm not sitting at the console.18:00
LaserJockAhmuck-Jr: Qt?18:00
LaserJockare you running KDE?18:01
Ahmuck-Jrno, but i like Qt apps :)18:01
Ahmuck-Jrand Qt apps are portable iirc18:02
LaserJockpygtk would also be fairly portable18:03
LaserJockI just wondered, as doing pyqt would force a dependency whereas pygtk would not as it's already installed18:03
Ahmuck-Jron ubuntu ltsp client ?18:04
Ahmuck-Jri'll look at it for sure18:04
Ahmuck-Jrhrm, i don't think my fat clients are in fat client mode.18:04
morgsLaserJock: yeah, hulahop needs rebuilding for each new xulrunner. asac referred to some way around that which I must look into.20:00
LaserJockmorgs: yeah, that's seriously uncool :-)20:01
LaserJockimagine through the next 3 years of hardy support us needing to reupload hulahop20:02
morgsyeah, I was hoping to get some assistance from the mozillateam for uploads each time, but since hulahop's in universe they're not happy to take it on themselves20:02
morgsSomehow debian manage not to change the xulrunner paths for every minor release in their packaging, it's always /usr/lib/xulrunner-1.9 not /usr/lib/xulrunner-1.9.0.520:16
LaserJockmorgs: I wonder why we do that?20:18
Ahmuckwhat is hulahop?22:30
LaserJockAhmuck: it's a part of sugar that is used by the web browser22:34
LaserJockpython-hulahop - Sugar graphical shell - gecko-based web engine22:35
Ahmuckk. i've been looking at gullop ?22:43
LaserJockAhmuck: ?22:43
Ahmuckbbiab22:44
