isaacj87So, what does everyone think of KDE 4.2 Beta 2?00:12
ActionParsnipBluesKaj: that wont work, you need the command from !puregnome00:12
ActionParsnipisaacj87: flakey00:12
isaacj87ActionParsnip: flakey? How so?00:13
BluesKajchills , try this : sudo aptitude remove kubuntu-desktop00:13
chillssays 49k will be removed00:13
isaacj87BluesKaj: I've tried that before. It only removes the meta-package and doesn't catch all the other ones :(00:14
ActionParsnipisaacj87: just seems to chew ram and slow down lots, i switched back to kde 4.1 + fluxbox and had zero issues00:14
BluesKajisaacj87, do you know how to remove it then ?00:15
isaacj87ActionParsnip: I've noticed that it's a little slower than KDE 4.2 Beta 1...Hmm, I thought it was my imagination00:15
ActionParsnipisaacj87: i have 512Mb free when running my normal apps, under kde 4.2 + amarok 2 i had 8Mb00:15
isaacj87BluesKaj: Apparently, this should do it...http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/puregnome.php00:17
isaacj87BluesKaj: It has to be done manually00:17
BluesKajisaacj87, check this : http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=20500200:18

chillsk doing it now.00:19
chillssays done.00:19
isaacj87ActionParsnip: Hmm, my RAM usage isn't nearly as rough as yours, but Beta 2 does feel slightly clunkier than 4.1/beta 200:20
isaacj87ActionParsnip: Beta 1*00:20
BluesKajthere's a few small graphics hitches with kde4.2 , but nothing serious ...konq crashes now and then but doesn't seem create any probs00:21
BluesKajbeta 200:21
isaacj87BluesKaj: Ah, you noticed the konq crashes. I'm not too concerned about it...I'm sure the KDE devs will have everything worked out in time for release00:21
ActionParsnipisaacj87: im sticking to kde4.1 + fluxbox til its released00:21

matt_di installed grub 2 thourgh sudo apt-get install grub202:53
genii!ask02:53
ubottuPlease don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line, so others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-)02:53
matt_dand it deleted grub (version 1)02:53
matt_dand now i cant boot into my kubuntu partition02:54
matt_dim ony my windows xp partition02:54
matt_dwhat cna i do02:54
matt_dgrub menu opens up but kubuntu wont load, says its incorrect/unavailable or something02:54
matt_donly windows opens02:54
geniimatt_d: Do you have a livecd around?02:55
matt_dno, sorry02:55
joh6nni'd say supergrub disk02:55
matt_di have the option to use the command line in the grub menu, i was thinking we could use that02:56
=== adam is now known as Adola
joh6nnmatt_d: i'd say you'd be better off trying www.supergrubdisk.org02:56
geniimatt_d: When it installed grub2 did it ask any questions of you like what disk to install to, etc?02:56
matt_djoh6nn: im actually not around any cds/dvds02:56
joh6nnah.  :(02:57
matt_dgenii: i dont think so, it asked something about my older menus.list02:57
joh6nnflash drive?02:57
geniimatt_d: The problem is it's nearly impossible to fix linux bootloader problems from inside Windows02:57
matt_djoh6nn: i actually have my external hard disk here, its got a lot of stuff in it though02:58
geniimatt_d: So something like grub bootdisk, or livecd or something is pretty much required02:58
matt_dgenii: cant i enter kubuntu through the command line in grub02:58
matt_d?02:58
joh6nnmatt_d: you can try, but it can be difficult to navigate02:59
matt_djoh6nn: what do you mean? i meant something like enter a command line and kubuntu would load03:00
=== keres`away is now known as keres
geniimatt_d: If you did something like install grub bootloader onto a subpartition for instance, it will never load03:01
joh6nnmatt_d: yeah, but the command you enter can be complicated03:03
matt_djoh6nn: how complicated03:08
joh6nncomplicated enough that i'd rather use a livecd, given the choice03:08
matt_djoh6nn: since i dont have that livecd option right now03:09
matt_djoh6nn: how about i install a bootloader for windows03:09
joh6nnbasically, what you're gonna have to try and do, with the aid of the "help" command, is figure out which command tells what you partitions are available03:09
joh6nnis there a windows partition on there?03:09
matt_dwhat do you mean03:10
matt_dyes03:10
matt_dim on windows right now03:10
matt_dmy hd on this laptop is divided into kubuntu and windows xp03:10
matt_dactually03:11
matt_dits divided in 303:11
matt_dwindows xp, kubuntu and in 5gb i store these recovery files03:11
joh6nnoh, so it's dual boot; sorry, i thought you were on a different computer03:13
joh6nninstalling the windows bootloader is unlikely to help03:13
wikkikubuntu!03:13
matt_dyup its a dual boot03:14
matt_dwhy is it unlikely to help?03:14
matt_donce i get to kubuntu i can install grub back03:14
joh6nnbecause if you managed to get into windows, then the windows bootloader is already working03:14
joh6nnand the windows bootloader, as far as i know, won't let you boot other OSes03:15
wikkiis there a way to switch switch between kde and gnome?03:15
wikkii run regular ubuntu03:15
matt_djoh6nn: ok then03:15
joh6nnwikki: yes, you can install them side by side, and switch back and forth03:15
wikkihow do you get kde installed?03:15
joh6nnwikki: just install kubuntu-desktop; that should install everything else you need, i think03:15
wikkithen just log out and use the picker with gdm or somethign like that?03:16
joh6nnyep03:16
joh6nnmatt_d: there's a help command in grub, which will tell you what commands are available, and what their syntax is03:16
wikkisounds easy enough03:16
joh6nnso if you go into grub, you can try and work out what you need to do03:16
joh6nnbut it won't be easy03:16
wikkiwonder how long this will take03:16
wastrelhow do i set a keyboard shortcut to launch a terminal?03:17
joh6nnwikki: at a guess, 35 minutes03:17
wikkiwhy 35 and not 30?03:17
wikkisays 2 minutes to finish the download03:17
rxscabinhello03:18
wikkiis kde pretty lean?  gnome seems to be getting bloated03:18
jedixneither is lean03:18
rxscabinsimple question I have03:18
jedixbut it's not bad.03:18
joh6nnwastrel: right-click on the K-Menu, go to Menu-Editor, and from there, find the terminal you want.  once you've found it, there should be an option available for key codes03:19
joh6nnwikki: meh.  it's so so.  if you want lean, you'll be more interested in say xfce03:19
wikkiwell I don't want that lean03:19
joh6nnclearly, i like it, or i wouldn't be here, but i'm not interested in lean.03:19
joh6nni'm interested in robust03:19
rxscabinwill kubuntu run on hp nx6325 laptop?03:20
Psi-JackOkay, what's adduser -r / --system do? It's not mentioned in the manpage at all.03:20
isaacj87wikki: I agree with jedix, they feel about the same. I appreciate KDE's look, polish, feel, and integration over Gnome's.03:20
joh6nnrxscabin: best way to find out would be to download the CD and try it; you can test it first without having to install it03:20
jedixxfce, fluxbox..03:20
rxscabinthanks should of thought of that03:20
rxscabinbye03:20
joh6nnPsi-Jack: what're you trying to do?03:20
Psi-Jackjoh6nn: Add a server user/group account for resin.03:21
wikkiI really just want to piss off my wife by making the computer look differnet again :)03:21
isaacj87joh6nn: probably should of mentioned that he needs the amd64 iso lol03:21
wastreljoh6nn: thanks yes there's an option there but it doesn't seem to work.03:21
joh6nnisaacj87: heh. if i'd known, i would have03:21
wastreli set a shortcut but it's not doing anything.  do i have to relog or something?03:22
isaacj87joh6nn: meh, he'll find out soon enough ;)03:22
joh6nnisaacj87: not my job to know everything about every laptop. :/03:22
isaacj87joh6nn: what?! i thought it was! ;)03:22
wikkidone!03:22
Psi-JackSo, what does adduser's -r / --system do?03:22
matt_djoh6nn: whats the help command?03:22
wikkithat was quick03:22
wikkibrb03:22
joh6nnmatt_d: "help" . :)03:22
jedixamd64 will run i38603:22
joh6nnwikki: really? that fast? what's your connection speed?03:23
kereswhat is the syntax to backup a file?03:23
Psi-Jackcp -a ?03:24
Psi-Jackheh03:24
joh6nnPsi-Jack: as far as i can tell based on the man, adduser -r / --system would just fail03:24
joh6nndoesn't look like valid syntax to me03:24
Psi-Jackjoh6nn: adduser --help, shows it exists.03:25
Psi-JackIt's Ubuntu-specific.03:25
joh6nnPsi-Jack: doesn't show a -r ...03:25
joh6nnalso, from what i can see, --system should be the first argument03:25
Psi-Jackjoh6nn: You using 8.10 or earlier?03:25
Psi-Jack-r, --system                  create a system account03:26
joh6nn8.1003:26
jedixI see no -r in 8.1003:26
jedix--system is there03:26
joh6nnOHHHHHH03:26

joh6nnyou mean -r AKA --system03:27
wikkiwell that worked03:27
Psi-JackNo. It's -r -OR- --system ;)03:27
wikkiwhat is the terminal program?03:27
joh6nnyeah, i gotcha03:27
wikkisomehow I got gnometerm03:27
Psi-Jackheh03:27
Psi-Jackwikki: konsole for KDE03:27
joh6nn--system doesn't create a user directory in /home03:27
Psi-Jackjoh6nn: Aha! Perfect. Why the frack isn't this documented in the manpage? LOL03:27
hpladdsHowto change the time format from 24 hr to AM PM in KDE 4.1?03:27
joh6nnPsi-Jack: you might want to check that if you can, but that'd be my expectation03:28
Psi-Jackhpladds: KDE Menu, System Settings, Regional settings.03:28
wastreltime and date, change the time format <303:28
wastreljust finished doing thatn03:28
wastrelnow i have to relog03:28

joh6nnPsi-Jack: yeah, check out the options to --system: "[--no-create-home]"03:28
wikkithis is going to take some getting used to03:28
joh6nnwikki: are you using 8.10?03:29
wikkiyes03:29
joh6nni wouldn't recommend trying to make the switch to KDE for the first time on 8.1003:29
joh6nnit's not fully stable03:29
hpladdsPsi-Jack: Thanks, I kept looking under time & date03:29
wikki:)03:29
isaacj87Psi-Jack: Thanks, I was wondering where that went as well.03:30
Psi-JackI find 8.10 VERY stable with KDE03:30
wikkiliveing on the edge03:30
isaacj87Psi-Jack: Have you updated to KDE 4.2 Beta 2?03:30
joh6nnPsi-Jack: i crash fairly regularly. :/03:30
Psi-Jackisaacj87: Yeah. heh. I just installed Cuacho Resin Pro.03:30
Psi-Jackisaacj87: Hell no! That's not part of 8.10 official.03:30
joh6nnanyone know why my update notifier might have stopped running at login, and how i can get it back?03:30
isaacj87Psi-Jack: ?! It's even better than KDE 4.103:30
Psi-JackIf you go unsupported, yes, obviously it will not be stable. ;)03:30
roxytai am using 8.1003:31
isaacj87Psi-Jack: Running and lovin' it man03:31
Psi-JackI won't ever do KDE beta again.03:31
Psi-JackKeyword: Again03:31
wikkiwow, amarok looks so pretty in kde03:32
isaacj87Psi-Jack: Burned badly huh?03:32
Psi-Jackjoh6nn: Do you know the nature of why it's crashing?03:32
Psi-Jackisaacj87: Yeah. :)03:32
wikkisomething doesn't seem right though03:32
Psi-Jackisaacj87: Kinda like why I will never go reiserfs again.03:32
wikkiwindows are jerky when i move them around03:32
joh6nnPsi-Jack: nope, no clue.  i know it's a kernel panic, but i don't know what causes it.03:32
Psi-JackWhen the filesystem starts knawing on itself in front of you making files completely useless and you can't even delete them, there's a problem.03:32
isaacj87wikki: Do you have a Nvidia card?03:32
wikkino03:32
joh6nni've been trying to narrow it down, but so far, no luck03:32
wikkiintel03:33
isaacj87wikki: Strange. Which one?03:33
wikki945 I think03:33
Psi-Jackjoh6nn: 32-bit or 64-bit?03:33
isaacj87wikki: Sorry, I don't see it up there, what version of KDE are you running?03:33
wikki4.103:34
joh6nnwikki: may need to turn the special effects off.  System Settings, Desktop03:34
joh6nnPsi-Jack: 32 bit on a dual-core laptop03:34
Psi-JackHmmmm. laptop..03:34
joh6nnso i think technically, i'm running 32 bit on a 64 bit processor, but i'm not sure if all dual-core chips are 64 bit, or just some03:34
Psi-JackThat can make a huge difference.03:34
Psi-Jackjoh6nn: You can't mix a 64bit and 32bit core together in the same CPU. ;)03:35
wastrelcore duo are 3203:35
wastrelcore 2 duo are 6403:35
isaacj87wikki: Yeah, you might have to try what joh6nn suggested. I have an intel i915, and I've tweaked the desktop effects a little. It runs fairly smoothly. Turn off direct rendering and adjust the Texture Filtering to "Nearest"03:35
joh6nnPsi-Jack: yeah, not what i meant03:35
Psi-JackAhhh03:36
Psi-JackYes, Now I see.03:36
wikkiyeah, that seemed to help03:36
wastrelyeah 4.1 release is a resource hog in my intrepix03:36
wikkikde crashed when I made the chagnes03:36
wikkior atleast it logged me right out03:36
wikki:)03:36
joh6nnhehe03:36
Psi-JackThere were no dual-core 32bit CPUs.03:36
wastrelsluggish imma have to make some changes for it to be tolerable03:36
isaacj87wikki: Yeah, that happened to me too :P03:36
Psi-JackThey only had dual-CPU, full CPUs, 1 core.03:36
joh6nnwikki: like i said, maybe not the best release to try KDE on. :)03:36
joh6nnPsi-Jack: good to know.  that settles it then. i'm running 32 bit, on a 64 bit processor then.  for whatever difference that makes03:37
Psi-JackI find 8.10 to be very well done.03:37
isaacj87So, we know that Psi-Jack isn't using Beta2, who here is?03:37
Psi-Jackjoh6nn: Intel or AMD?03:37
wastrelPsi-Jack: core duo are 32 bit  "Core03:37

keresis there a risk when forcing a partition in fstab?03:39
joh6nnat: depending on what problem you've got, you might be better off in #xubuntu03:39
keresa risk that files may be corrupt or deleted?03:40
joh6nnkeres: pretty much, when you force something, there's a risk. :/03:40
atok thanks john03:40
keresjoh6nn: how much?03:40
AdolaCan someone help me with this?03:41
keresjoh6nn: are you familiar with fstab?03:41
Adolahttp://www.mumbles-project.org/plugins/03:41
joh6nndepends.  what kind of file system, what kernel, etc. etc.03:41
AdolaI'm scared to tackle it alone.03:41
wikkioh, that's weird, it unmounts the ipod, but the ipod doesn't notice03:41
joh6nnkeres: a little.  wouldn't say i'm an expert03:41
Adola(I'm needing Kopete to work With AmaroK)03:41
wikkiis that the way it normally works? anyone else got an ipod?03:41
Psi-JackThe one thing I am kinda annoyed about though is it almost seems like KDE doesn't like working fully with OSS properly.03:41
keresjoh6nn: it's a non-OS ntfs HDD i use to back up files between linux installs03:41
kereswith a bunch of real important data on it03:41
isaacj87Adola: Could you be more specific?03:41
Psi-JackAnd I will never EVER use ALSA again if I can avoid it 100%03:41
joh6nnkeres: why's it formatted ntfs?  got a windows install somewhere?03:42
keresjoh6nn: i used it as a back up when i had a windows install, but the HDD itself doesn't have an OS installed03:42
joh6nnPsi-Jack: er; OSS is dead and unmaintained, isn't it?03:42
Adolaisaacj87 : Yes, that site has a "Scripit" To make Kopete "talk" with AmaroK so I can send out my media info to my contacts.03:42
Psi-Jackjoh6nn: Wrong.03:42
atjohn i actually did mean kubuntu03:42
Psi-Jackjoh6nn: 4Front opensourced OSS4 after all this time. ;)03:42
keresjoh6nn: and the guy who sent me a modified fstab set it as ntfs instead of what i set it as ntfs-3g03:43
joh6nnPsi-Jack: wow. did not know that.03:43
snarksteranyone in here a phonon guru?03:43
wikkiok time for bed03:43
Psi-Jackjoh6nn: Neither did I till I looked it up, cause I fracking hate ALSA. Always have.03:43
wikkithis file manage is where it's at03:43
snarksterive got a machine that will just not make sound with amarok and i think its phonon issue with the sound card.03:43
AdolaWait...I'm terribly sorry...That isn't for Kopete...03:43
AdolaI'm osrry03:43
joh6nnkeres: ntfs is what the kernel supports.  ntfs-3g is only available once you login as a user, as far as i know.03:43
Psi-Jackjoh6nn:  There's a movement going on to bring OSS back to Linux. All this crap about various different sound architextures has gone far too far in the linux community.03:44
joh6nnso it wouldn't be valid in fstab03:44
isaacj87Adola: FYI, Kopete has something similar to that built in03:44
joh6nnPsi-Jack: i hear that.  but the problem is, OSS is YASS; how're we gonna convince the alsa developers to move to OSS?03:44
Psi-Jackjoh6nn: First, it was just oss, then hardware companies of CHEAP sound cards, mostly on-boards, started removing the hardware-level mixing support.. Suddenly esd and arts came out as two software-based sound mixers..03:44
keresjoh6nn: whenever is set my syntax in fstab to '/dev/sdb1/media/windows ntfs-3g    defaults 0       0'03:44
keresit won't let me access it03:45
keresit always says i don't have priveleges03:45
isaacj87Adola: Go into Kopete's main window (buddy list). Go to Settings->Configure->Plugins and turn on the "Now Playing" plugin03:45
joh6nnkeres: right, because ntfs-3g would only be available once you login.  fstab gets loaded before then, so you can't set it as ntfs-3g03:45
Adolaisaacj87 :  Yes, but, it doesn't work.03:45
Psi-Jackjoh6nn: Then came along, SDL with it's audio library layer, and libao with it's, and all these libraries coming out of the woodwork, and to add to it, ALSA comes out, so now SDL and libao, and esd and arts all have to add ALSA support... e03:45
Psi-Jackjoh6nn: See a bad trend there?03:46
keresjoh6nn: what should i set it as?03:46
joh6nnkeres: ntfs03:46
keresjoh6nn: so my file system has little to with it not working if it is set to ntfs?03:46
Psi-Jackjoh6nn: The thing about OSS is, it's /more/ portable, and easy to develop for. That was it's purpose, and still is. ALSA is not portable to anything, at all.03:46
joh6nnPsi-Jack: i don't know much about it at all.  i just know i'm sick of there being a new sound system every 6 months03:47
keresjoh6nn: should i just force it?03:47
Psi-JackOh yeah, like PulseAudio?03:47
Psi-JackWhich sucks worse than esound and arts combined? ;)03:47
joh6nnkeres: no.03:47
joh6nnkeres: i'm not sure what the problem you're having is, but no, don't force it03:47
keresjoh6nn: should i pastebin my current fstab for you to look at?03:47
isaacj87Adola: Works for me here w/ amarok 2.0. What behavior are you looking for? Currently mine just shows what I'm listening to in the chat window.03:48
keresjoh6nn: http://pastebin.com/m6a44911503:48
keres:)03:48
Adolaisaacj87: I have, however, when I type "/media"  It says "I would tell you what I'm listening to, but ..."03:48
joh6nnkeres: what happens when you try to use that fstab?03:48
keresit's a little sloppy. i commented out syntaxes that ended up not working, so only the uid one03:48
keresjoh6nn: http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=2ev3xhg&s=503:49
keresthat is what happens :(03:49
joh6nnPsi-Jack: yeah, i wasn't impressed with anything about Pulse at all03:49
Psi-Jackjoh6nn: Yeah, I don't like my sound being distorted at all.03:50
AdolaThat's all I want.03:50
AdolaShould I run it in terminal?03:50
Psi-Jackjoh6nn: Especially only constantly. ;)03:50
keresjoh6nn: even with 'sudo chown keres:keres /media/windows'03:50
snarksterno sound from amarok-kde4 but get video sound.. what am i missing?03:51
joh6nnkeres: well, you can try forcing it, but i don't know if that will help.  i'd say that you should look into reformatting the drive as either fat or ext303:51
keresjoh6nn: it's vital that i not format it03:51
epimethhi guys... does anyone have experience installing TOR03:51

snarksterand Im not trying mp3 either just shoutcast stuf for right now03:52
joh6nnsnarkster: and it's clearly playing? that is, the problem is that there's no sound, not that it's not playing at all?03:52

snarksterwell i get sound from videos03:55
snarksterjust not amarok03:55

SoliloquialI have a question of this makes any sense: why are my cursors during the login screen GNOME, even though i'm using kdm?03:55
isaacj87Adola: You may need to direct the plugin to use Amarok 2 specifically. I think I did that when I was using 4.1 (it does it automatically on 4.2 beta 2)03:56
keresSoliloquial: do you have both kdm and GNOME?03:56
epimethhi guys... does anyone have experience installing TOR? specifically for use with konversation?03:56

epimethszrhawaii: yea03:57
joh6nnepimeth: it worked fine for me out of the box.  didn't use it with IRC, though03:57
AdolaYeah, I know.03:57
keresSoliloquial: that's probably why. i have both kde and gnome installed, i run mainly gnome but my cursor is kde-style03:57
epimethszrhawaii: there's nothing to it... apt-get install virtualbox-ose and thats it03:57
epimethjoh6nn: so what, just apt-get install tor?03:57
joh6nnyes03:57
epimethjoh6nn: after adding the repos, of course03:58
joh6nnafter that, you'd just have to point your irc client at localhost:####03:58
snarksterszrhawaii: virtualbox for 8.10 is easy peasey.. just install it and go03:58
epimethjoh6nn: and how do I set up ktorrent so it uses it?03:58
joh6nnsame way; tell it use localhost:#### as a proxy03:58
joh6nnbe aware that it'll move as slow as molasses that way03:59
Soliloquialkeres, do you know if it's possible for me to use kde cursors in both the login screen and in the desktop?03:59
snarksterktorrent is the same just install it and go03:59

Untill Now i have excanged information passing by XP Home PC (It is seen and I can share information and file from anywhere to it)But Xp Home is the only PC that I can see from kubuntu.... I want to see also the kubuntu PCS... what is wrong?08:55
zoraelkamerigo: "See"?08:56
zoraelkamerigo: Try entering 'smbtree' in a terminal (and just enter a blank password); are your other computers listed there?08:57
awadhi there .. who i can change the screen resoultion ??? please !08:58
britishbenawad, it'll be inside your control center, under "Display"08:58
Psi-JackMy "Stop" key worked in Gnome, no problems, but KDE's changing xkb which makes Stop be XF86AudioVolumeDown instead08:58
zoraelkamerigo: Per default your Kubuntu boxes can't resolve WINS hostnames ("computer names") into ip adresses, so if you translate "see" into "being able to ping the hostname", then you'd have to make some minor modifications to get that to work08:59
awadwhere is the conrol center please ?08:59
zoraelkamerigo: You'll also want to make sure everyone's in the same workgroup.08:59
awadi can't find it :)08:59
kamerigozorael: Sorry ... i was busy a moment.... I'm going to try09:00
kamerigozorael: smbtree ... (blank password) ... give me no result09:02
zoraelkamerigo: Can you ping the other computers' ip adresses?09:02

kamerigo...09:04
zoraelkamerigo: Sounds weird. If I were you I'd first make sure all computers were in the same workgroup by modifying /etc/samba/smb.conf (WORKGROUP line)09:06
zoraelkamerigo: Then for good measure I'd set up WINS hostname resolving: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=6316236#post631623609:06
kamerigozorael: done09:06
kamerigowins?09:07
tictricRiddell: ping09:07
kamerigoi'm not sure09:07
zoraelkamerigo: Windows Internet Name Service, basically awareness with computer names09:07
kamerigozorael: i don't know if is important, but i'd like to see and share between kubuntos PCS09:08
kamerigozorael: also with XP but first goal is this09:09
zoraelkamerigo: Right. So for that you should just need to set up your own samba shares.09:09
zoraelkamerigo: Have a look at http://paste.ubuntu.com/87672/09:11
zoraelkamerigo: Just open up that /etc/samba/smb.conf file, modify the WORKGROUP line to suit your other computers, and add shares at the end of the file in the manner of that example09:12
zoraelkamerigo: Most of those settings lines are redundant, and they will set up a share with full read and write properties for anonymous users, so it's for a home network09:12
zoraelkamerigo: Stuff like 'read only = no' is synonymous with 'writeable = yes', but after having had some problems getting it to work properly I just added them all.09:13
zoraelkamerigo: And I'd recommend the WINS thing too, it's a one-time procedure and then you can refer to other computers by their hostnames (computer names) instead of only by their ips09:14

blip-hi all, I have Kubuntu 8.04 and there is a FAT32 partition on my system... everytime I want to mount or unmount this partition through Dolphin filemanager, I get a prompt to enter my password for root access... the problem is when I shutdown the machine as it's shutting down KDE tries to unmount and gives me a password prompt (gui) but there is on time to type it in..... the end result is I usually lose all the changes i've made on the partition during09:33
blip-that session....  I noticed this partition isn't defined in fstab... is that why it's asking me for passwd every time ?  thanks09:33

EKrava2) if you have /etc/rc.local insert the modprobe nvidia coomand in this file13:41

cz9qvhDoes anyone know how to change the default launch action for executable files in kde 4?13:44
BluesKajlukic,  which video card ? ...you really should check adept by typing your cardnumber into the adept searchbar and then checking in properties the various nvidia drivers available supporting your particular card.13:44
lukicEKrava:  should i put modprobe nvidia at the end of rc.local file? after exit 0?13:45
lukicBluesKaj: its geforce4 mx44013:45
cz9qvhlukic: exit 0 will terminate the script, so put it before that, if you need to put it there at all13:45
ActionParsnip1cz9qvh: do you mean windows executables or linux executables13:45
cz9qvhlukic: check the guide actionparsnip1 pulled up13:45

cz9qvhactionparsnip1: i meant just the default "click" action... right now i'm not getting anything except for an "open with" window13:48
ActionParsnip1cz9qvh: you'd be better creating a script to run the particular one or two you want to run different in a script13:48
ActionParsnip1cz9qvh: very strange13:49
cz9qvhyeah, its wierd13:49
cz9qvhi can make a launcher for the application, by right clicking on the folder view in plasma and choosing "Create new->link to application" and choosing the executable file i want to launch in that dialog and saving the launcher and then when i click on that launcher it loads up the program like it should13:50
cz9qvhbut i want to just click on the executable and run it13:50
cz9qvhi can get where plasma wants me to choose a program to launch it with if the file i click on does not have the x flag set13:51

EtFbJust noticed the discussion linked on Reddit about Kubuntu/KDE4 being a complete mess.  I'd been thinking of upgrading to Intrepid over the Squidmas holiday, but now I'm reconsidering.  Any experiences from actual Kubuntu users?23:39
cuzntmy sis m0b0 my creative and my nvidia is listed23:39
ActionParsnipEtFb: kde 4.1 is ok, avoid 4.223:40
ActionParsnipcuznt: can you pastebin the outputs please23:40
EtFbActionParsnip: Interesting - I've seen exactly the opposite advice elsewhere.  Why do you say that?23:40
=== glaucia is now known as Nander
mankeletorhi all, wheres the inittab file located in kubuntu?23:43
ActionParsnipEtFb: my hardware is purposefully linux friendly, it just ran sluggishly and just felt a bit frail. I ran it a week and went back to kde4.1 then put fluxbox on.23:43
Ahmuck-Jris there a poster for kubuntu similar to ubuntu's highway poster?23:43
ActionParsnipEtFb: i was running kde4.2 with amarok2 on 1Gb ram and it left me with 8Mb free23:44
lovredoes anyone have an account on portral.acm.org??? i need an e-book asap?? plz hlp23:44
ActionParsnipEtFb: im running the original stuff I had before upgrading and I have 512Mb free23:44
EtFbActionParsnip: I would have thought 1Gb is a bit low for a serious work machine - I think my laptop has 3Gb now but I don't mind upgrading it if it can handle more.23:45
EtFbChanging to Fluxbox looks like a last resort too.  I'd consider going to Gnome rather than do that...23:46
BluesKajmankeletor, check /etc/inittab23:46
mankeletorBluesKaj: the file doesnt exists23:48
BluesKajyeah , man23:48
BluesKajmankeletor ...sorry23:49
mankeletorBluesKaj: np23:49
BluesKajdunno where it's situated...dunno if it w=even exists anymore23:49
=== jtechidna is now known as JontheEchidna
sillemecan anyone tell me if layout of kubuntu v 8.04 is same or VERY similar to that of 8.10...?23:51
=== Hiderogen is now known as Hydrogen
EtFbsilleme: What do you mean by "layout"?23:52
inanimateDaSkreech: For some reason kcmshell --list only lists five moudles. Shouldn't there be more?23:52
aloneainanimate: didn't he leave somewhere?23:54
sillemev10 appears to me as a linux version of a Vista...   working with a much older version presently... 7.10?? feisty fawn.  took me a while ot get used to but i like.  briefly sampled 8.10 and as i saiid to me... to flashy.23:54
ActionParsnipEtFb: its for chat / browsing the web, 1gb is enough23:54
ActionParsnipEtFb: its still doubled the use of my ram to achieve the same end23:54
EtFbActionParsnip: Fair enough.  I use my laptop as my primary machine, for software development, running VMWare, watching videos, web browsing, plotting the overthrow of Steve Ballmer, etc.23:55
inanimatealonea: Yeah, you're right... Oh well.23:55
ActionParsnipEtFb: thats why you need the ram, vmware23:55
EtFbActionParsnip: Believe it!23:55
EtFbActionParsnip: But it's so nice to be able to press a key and make Windows go away into a little box and stop bothering me...23:56
ActionParsnipEtFb: this is my main machine too, my other linux box is a fileserver / ssh / torrent / backup box with 256mb on gentoo23:56
sillemeEtFb:  what do you think?23:56
ActionParsnipEtFb: my only windows system is my work laptop. I have no need for it23:56
EtFbActionParsnip: I can live without Windows except for one thing: Delphi, a Windows programming language.  There's nothing close to it in Linux, other than the excellent but rather young Gambas.23:57
EtFbsilleme: I think you can probably switch off a lot of the eye-candy.  I'm happy with the reliability of Hardy Heron, and I'm considering moving to Intrepid but I hear it has reliability bugs.23:58
ActionParsnipEtFb: delphi? isnt that dead yet?23:59
