filipegattiwhy rar doesn't come already installed? :P00:29
knomefilipegatti, we don't want to encourage people to use rar.00:32
filipegattiand how can I unzip rar files? using 7z?00:34
knomefilipegatti, search for "rar" in synaptic.00:35
filipegattihm00:37
filipegattiunrar-free00:37
filipegattiwell there is a lot of packages00:37
filipegattithere are*00:37
filipegattidamn portuguese00:37
filipegattiknome, which one you do encourage to use?00:38
knomefilipegatti, gzip and bzip2 are supported at least00:39
knomei mean ootb00:39
knomethose are the most common also00:39
filipegattihm00:44
filipegattii'm not sure if synaptic is showing these packages. but i guess xarchiver is the best option here00:45
filipegattior this p7zip-full00:48
filipegattiknome, any hint on how to use this p7zip? :s i've installed it but I don't know the command to run it yet.00:54
filipegattiyes, i guess this can sound some stupid questions though, so i'm sorry00:54
Memfisorinoco is run by agre, which was bought by lsi. However going to lsi's website clicking on download (hoping for an updated linux driver) gives this page : http://www.lsi.com/cm/DownloadSearch.do?locale=EN00:55
Memfisa blank page. Thanks lsi! Really helpful. grrrrrr00:55
filipegattihow professional00:56
filipegatti:(00:56
Memfisdoesn't help if you take the locale off either00:56
MemfisAgere < correct spelling for logs.00:57
Memfishttps://wiki.kubuntu.org/OrinocoMonitorMode/0.15x    < this is the exact same chipset I have. I don't need monitor mode. Just wpa would do.00:58
filipegattiMemfis, any hint on this? http://pastebin.com/d544d63b901:10
Memfisnope I've used unrar before without problems01:11
filipegattithis one is the p7zip-full :(01:11
MemfisI've always tar.gz'd stuff. or unrar when required01:12
filipegattiknome told me that xubuntu is not encouraging people to use rar/unrar, so I tried this one. I think I'll download xarchiver (which uses p7zip)01:14
Memfisjust install unrar ;)01:15
knomefilipegatti, of course it's ok to unrar your old archives. but we don't encourage making more rar packages so that's why rar isn't installed by default01:16
filipegattiyes, i understood knome. what i only tried to do was install an compresser that would unzip every format.01:17
knomeah ok01:19

redwyrmokay, it works with file-roller01:39
Memfisgrr I cant compile this driver.01:49
aliksyI'm kind of a newb and I followed the directions I found on the web, but I can't get sound juicer to rip as .mp3.. can someone help me, please?01:50
redwyrmaliksy, have you enabled restricted formats for your system?01:52
aliksyyeah. i can play mp3s, if that's telling.01:53
redwyrmhold on, I'm going to try it on a CD01:54
redwyrm(if I can find one in my room... most are in my car)01:54
Odd-rationalealiksy: did you install xubuntu-restricted-extras yet?01:55
aliksyi think so01:55
Odd-rationalealiksy: you can check in synaptic package manager.01:55
aliksyyeah. says it's installed01:56
redwyrmwhat error messages are you getting?01:56
aliksyit's not letting me select mp3 from the menu even though mp3 is checked as 'active'01:57
aliksyI dunno if that means I'm being exceptionally dumb or something01:57
redwyrmit let me select MP3 from the menu01:57
redwyrmand I just ripped a few songs that play fine01:58
redwyrmhmm01:58
redwyrmOdd-rationale, would it make a difference if aliksy installed sound-juicer before installing xubuntu-restricted-extras?01:58
Odd-rationaleredwyrm: no it should not...01:58
Odd-rationalealiksy: i suppose you already tried restarting sound juicer?01:59
aliksyyeah. no effect from that01:59
Odd-rationalealiksy: what version of xubuntu is this?01:59
aliksywhere would it tell me that? i installed it a few months (3?) ago02:00
Odd-rationalealiksy: do "lsb_release -a" in terminal02:00
aliksy8.04.1 hardy02:01
Odd-rationaleok. that's good.02:02
aliksyno other ideas? I could rip things as .ogg, I guess02:06
Odd-rationaleyeah. i prefer flac myself...02:06
filipegattiflac > *02:06
filipegattialiksy, there is no need to rip as mp3, unless you're hoping to use it with a mp3 player02:07
aliksyDon't have the HD space for that02:07
aliksyI suppose so.  Though it's kind of a matter of principle now, too. I wanna know why it's not working..02:07
filipegattiactually I only listen to online radios, the music I have on my computer is only to add in my mobile :-)02:08
aliksyi listen to pandora.com a lot02:08
Odd-rationalei have 6.1 gb of music.02:08
Memfislooks like I'm going to have to uninstall XUbuntu :(02:08
cody-somervilleMemfis, why?02:09
Odd-rationaleand i listen to last.fm: http://www.last.fm/user/Odd-rationale02:09
Memfisbecause there are no drivers that support orinoco wpa that I can get to work.02:10
redwyrmaliksy, you could do it the old school way if you really want .mp302:10
Memfisonly option appears to be a kernel rebuild which is way beyond my skill level.02:10
redwyrmwrite a script that pipes cdparanoia output to lame02:10
Memfis& I'm not sure that that would solve it.02:10
redwyrmbbl02:11
cody-somervilleMemfis, :(02:11
Odd-rationalealiksy: also, try another ripper... another one i like is abcde: http://www.andrews-corner.org/abcde.html02:11
cody-somervilleMemfis, does it work in Ubuntu?02:11
Memfisdoubt it.02:11
aliksyI'll take a look at abcde.  I don't think I'd know how to pipe output anywhere02:11
MemfisI cant get drivers to compile, and if I could, they'd clash with kernel drivers.02:13
MemfisDang it. I was just getting into this Xubuntu GUI stuff.02:23
MemfisI'll have another look tomorrow, but it seams it's back to XP for me.02:23
MemfisGood Night all.02:23

filipegattihow can I add a new theme? I've downloaded a gtk and a xfwm4 theme, I need to install both, right? how can I do that?02:37
R1cochetis there a way to mount a .iso file on a virtural drive?02:44
R1cochetvirtual*02:45

filipegattiok, theme installed :P02:58
filipegattiwhat browser do you recommend me to use to keep xubuntu the most lightweight possible? epiphany?02:58
ballSeaMonkey03:01
redwyrmkazehakase is pretty lightweight03:01
ballbrb03:01
MattBnri cant get xubuntu to even install03:03
MattBnrit gets to the select and install software part then stops at 6%03:06
charlie-tcaMattBnr: depending on the system, it can take 30minutes there. Sometimes it helps to hit the shift keys a half dozen times, too03:07
MattBnrwell it gets to 6% then gives a big red box saying it failed03:07
MattBnrim checking the integrity of th cd now03:08
MattBnrthe*03:08
charlie-tcaOoops! That's a good idea, check the cd03:08
MattBnrits an old windows ME computer i had 850Mhz processor and 128mb ram03:08
charlie-tca128mb is pretty tight. I install on 256mb here. Anyway to add a little?03:09
charlie-tcaAre you using the desktop cd or the alternate cd?03:09
filipegattii recommend the alternate cd in this case03:10
charlie-tcaI do too, which is why I asked.03:11
MattBnralternate03:12
MattBnrmmm the integrit check failed03:12
charlie-tcaYeah, that will cause it to hang, all right03:13

ballWhat's it about?03:57
Ultraputzlet's see...04:02
cody-somervilleUltraputz, whats your problem?04:02
Ultraputzbackgroudn: no changes to teh system...04:02
Ultraputzi'm working in terminal, rhythmbox is open, and i'm playing with python, which is also doing nothing interesting.04:03
Ultraputzthe machine starts to bog04:03
Ultraputzhas to be shut down04:03
Ultraputzcomes back up...04:03
Ultraputzmakes it to gdm -- i log in, and it bogs hard, and pushes back out04:03
Ultraputznow it won't get past the splash screen04:03
ballPerhaps one of them has a leak04:03
Ultraputzso...04:03
Ultraputzi logged in via ssh when gdm was back up.04:03
cody-somervilleUltraputz, try running top to see whats sucking up the resources04:03
balldoes it improve if you reboot?04:03

Ultraputzthere are a dozen copies of stuff like beagled, apt-cache, update-notifier04:04
Ultraputza lot more04:04
Ultraputzand in the end, xfce4-session was segfaulting04:04
* Ultraputz tested memory, ran fsck -- everything is cool04:04

Ultraputzstill hangs on the splash screen04:05
Ultraputzthat's where i'm at.04:05
Ultraputzwhat i'm wondering is:04:06
Ultraputzthere are autostarted apps...04:06
Ultraputzthen there are apps started by the session tool and as a consequence of other tools04:06
Ultraputz... what exactly launches them? is there more than one tool that auto launches apps...04:06
Ultraputzand might it be caught in a loop causing it to keep cycling through the startup apps, which would explain the dozens of copies of each?04:07
Ultraputzladies? gentlemen? any ideas? :-)04:07
Ultraputzis this maybe as stupid as a permissions issue or some mangled pref somewhere?04:08
ballUltraputz: I'd purge Xfce then04:09
ball...perhaps try reinstalling it.04:09
Ultraputzdefine 'purge xfce'04:09
Ultraputzit's not xfce...04:09
Ultraputzas i said, it worked in a guest session just fine04:09
ballOh hang on, you're on Xubuntu04:09
Ultraputzit's actually ubuntu with a change of religion04:09
Ultraputzbecause metacity sucks <insert choice expletive/term of abuse>04:09
ballAh, I'd wipe it and start from scratch.04:09
Ultraputzit wouldn't be much of a trick to nuke the dir and set it up again04:10
Ultraputzor copy guest's prefs over.04:10
Ultraputzand god knows there's stuff to do04:10
Ultraputzbut it seems like htere's somethign important to be learned from figuring out what's wrong.04:10
Ultraputzeven if i see someone straight up hit by a train, i still demand an autopsy, you know?04:11
ballI'd demand a bucket04:11
Ultraputzi'm just saying...04:12
Ultraputzif nothing interesting is happening, as in, not putting the thing in an abnormal situation...04:12
Ultraputzand all of a sudden, it just goes apes*** you kind of want to know why, so it doesn't happen again.04:12
ballit's in an abnormal situation because you changed its religion04:12
ballit's bound to be confused04:12
Ultraputzswitching from metacity to xubuntu should not exactly be traumatic04:13
Ultraputzer04:13
Ultraputzxfce04:13
Ultraputzand it's been working beautifully for the last 3 months, regularly put through it's paces.04:13
Ultraputzand a nearly identical setup on the laptop has been mostly happy for the last 9 months...04:14
Ultraputzso i'm really curious, "why did you pooh your pants, ubuntu?"04:14
Ultraputzshort of bludgeoning it to get it over with, what would you do if you were gonna track it down?04:15
ballI'd bludgeon it, but then I'm short of time these days.04:15
Ultraputzi cut my teeth on sys 3 and nextstep -- x windows was something i've managed to dodge for years :-)04:15
ballPlenty of other stuff to worry about.04:15

heapyhey vidd, thanks for the help the other night lad21:40
viddnp21:41
viddwhat up?21:41
heapyi have a new problem haha21:41
heapyother than that im doin okay, just shattered from work21:41
viddso what is the issue?21:41
heapylad, i can't use my laptop to play a dvd without the damn thing crashing on me.21:41
viddheapy, you probably need libdvdcss21:42
heapyi have tried totem, and vlc with a bunch of codecs installed on them both. i have done a clean install both times, using the two players. i dloaded libdvdcss2 and a bunch of other things people talk about in the forums. it plays an encrypted dvd for like 7 minutes, then locks up playing some sound over and over, and over, and over!! ... have to hold pwr button to restart.. i cant play a full dvd, only the first chapter before it hangs21:43
viddheapy, the codec you need is libdvdcss21:44
heapyjust libdvdcss? not the 2 part?21:44
viddare you using blu-ray dvd's?21:45
heapyno mate just normal dvd movies21:45
* vidd missed that in your 2 page paragraph =]21:45
heapybut without some codec' , totem or vlc doesnt play them at all... totem often says location not found21:45
viddare these truely "normal" dvd's or "bootlegg"?21:45
heapyhonest m8, brand new dvd's from hmv21:46
vidddunno21:46
viddlibdvdcss is the only codec you should need to play dvd's21:47
heapyim at a loss too, i have tried soo many different things. mainly a re-install from stratch xubuntu 8.04.1, then  the updates.. restart.. then the vid drivers, restart.... then some codec's for either totem or vlc depending which one im testing, pop the dvd in and crash21:47
heapyi think these dvd's are encrypted, for copy right21:48
heapyso it needs some codec from the non free range21:48
viddthat is libdvdcss21:48
heapyoh issit21:48
heapyhow can i see if i have that installed vidd? synaptic doesnt show it when i search21:49
heapyit only shows libdvdread3, libdvdcss221:50
heapyis this it lad? libdvdcss-dev_1.2.10-0.2medibuntu1_i386.deb21:56
viddno...that is the dev21:56
viddtbh...i dont know21:56
viddand i have to go home21:57
vidd=]21:57
knomelibdvdcss2 is what you need21:57
heapyi thought that too knome, & installing libdvdcss2 does let me play the dvd.. but after 5-10 mintues, the dvd film just "locks up" and repeats sound over and over m8.. i canny enjoy a movie cus it crashes!21:58
heapyno worries vidd lad, go home you crab21:59
heapyalso, should i be using autoremove after installing and updating xubuntu?22:04

karmaleonHi. Can someone recommend me another Client for chatting, different from Pidgin? Something more lightweight, only to connect MSN (other protocols are unnecessary). Thank you.22:05
AizawaThis is only sort of related to xubuntu, but when I put files on my PSP they ARE copied to it, but doesn't show up on the actual PSP, I can only see the files from my PC.. If I try to remove files, it just doesn't work. Is this because of linux? I mean, it's likely, although I (I'm really not good at linux and stuff but it's my guess) can't understand why it would differ from putting files on it from windows..22:06
