michael__how come pidgin 2.5 will not compile?00:34
DaSkreechtue: What's the versions you have installed ?00:34
michael__or compiling anything under kubuntu00:34
ActionParsnipyo yo yo00:34
DaSkreechmichael__: What's the error?00:34
tuei got 8.10 installed, but cat /proc/version reports 2.6.24. so i guess this means that when i upgraded from 8.04 to 8.10 the grub configuration files didnt get changed. this explains why im having problems getting fglrx working....00:35
DaSkreechtue: What versions of the kernel do you have installed?00:36
michael__its better when someone else does the dirty work!! of compiling something then i trying to do it00:37
tueDaSkreech: im trying to find out but i dont know what package provides the kernel (newbie...)00:37
michael__never works00:37
tueDaSkreech: but it must have to do with a bad grub configuration file because i just ran apt-get update, upgrade. you think dpkg-reconfigure grub do the trick?00:38

michael__no i don't know crap when it comes to compiling00:39

DaSkreechbazhang: that's not true :-P00:42

michael__i agree, compiling isn't for me, let the people do the dirty work then install it00:43
ActionParsnipDaSkreech: it can be true00:43

DaSkreechActionParsnip: using something newer will more often introduce problems?00:43
bazhangsome users feel the higher number = better, without looking for any associated downsides00:43
DaSkreechmichael__: look at getdeb.net00:44
ActionParsnipDaSkreech: it may, it may not00:44
DaSkreechActionParsnip: If newer versions were MORE OFTEN more problematic what's the point of getting a new version00:44
michael__i like debian packages alot better then slackware00:45
michael__and thats what kubuntu is about00:45
DaSkreechthey can be but to say that it's often more problematic is overstating or over cautioning00:45
michael__they install without trouble.00:45
ActionParsnipDaSkreech: its open source, comes with no garuntee00:45
DaSkreechmichael__: look at getdeb.net00:45
ActionParsnipDaSkreech: it may solve some some issues, it may create new ones00:45
DaSkreechActionParsnip: agreed but lets not scare people needlessly00:45
ActionParsnipDaSkreech: I agree, I'm just showing how its not all saccarin / blue sky00:46
michael__what is getdeb.net about00:46
DaSkreechThat's like when people used to say that installing Linux would make Windows unbootable almost everytime you install it00:46
DaSkreechIt can00:46
bazhangDaSkreech, recommending folks use 'latest', or downplaying the risks is not wise imo00:46

bazhangDaSkreech, I was.00:47
ActionParsnipDaSkreech: im just highlighting the reality thats all, newer is not always better, like some folks upgrading to intrepid have found00:47
DaSkreechI can live with saying newer is not better and know what you are upgrading to before you try it00:47
ActionParsnipDaSkreech: sounds agreeable00:48
ActionParsnipDaSkreech: :D00:48

michael__See `config.log' for more details.00:50
ActionParsnipmichael__: the short version is, newer isnt better. If the current version works, why fix something that isnt broken if the new version may have issues00:50
DaSkreechmichael__: What bugs have been fixed for 2.5.2 ?00:50
michael__what is the deal with this stupid compiler00:50
DaSkreechActionParsnip: e-deafness is amazing00:50
ActionParsnipmichael__: compiler is great00:50
michael__C compiler cannot create executables00:51
ActionParsnipmichael__: as you are not installing from deb, you may ned to upgrade some libs, these are called dependancies00:51
michael__thats bunch of crap00:51
DaSkreechmichael__: what are you trying to do?00:51
michael__compile a source from a program00:51
=== bruno is now known as Guest58138
DaSkreechmichael__: ok few things00:51
michael__then why don't debian just download the required whatever and just go00:51
DaSkreechmichael__: This is not debian if you want to always have the latest stuff run debian unstable00:52
ActionParsnipmichael__: you are compiling, the compiler only sees the make and configure files00:52
DaSkreechOr better debian testing but the point is you should really read before you jump into things00:52
michael__when i install other things it auto downloads the dependies and it gos00:52
ActionParsnipmichael__: you are free to apt-get the dependancys or compile them if they are not on repos00:52
DaSkreechmichael__: What bugs were fixed in 2.5.2 ?00:52
bazhangmichael__, one question00:52
ActionParsnipmichael__: compiling is a whole different thing00:53
michael__i am running 2.5.1 pidgin it is close enough to the 2.5.200:53
michael__compiling is for the people out there not me00:53
michael__its bunch of crap and never works00:53
ActionParsnipmichael__: you can compile easily00:53
bazhangmichael__, what new fixes / features does the latest offer that you need to have it.00:54
michael__i don't need the latest of pidgin, found 2.5.1 which installed excellant00:54
michael__it is close enough.00:54
DaSkreechmichael__: You are severely missing the point00:54
bazhangmichael__, install build-essential ; compiling works fine.00:55
ActionParsnipDaSkreech: http://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/ChangeLog00:55
michael__like you said DaSkreech Kubuntu is free, do whatever i want as you are not responsible that may happen to my pc00:55
bazhangmichael__, but there is a reason the newest is not included in ubuntu/kubuntu00:55
DaSkreechActionParsnip: I know that does michael__ ?00:55
ActionParsnipDaSkreech: i doubt it00:56
DaSkreechmichael__: I'm not trying to tell you you can't install it I'm just telling you that you should know what you are doing00:56
ActionParsnipDaSkreech: i'd actually put money on it00:56
bazhangmichael__, but what you are doing is not supported here00:56
DaSkreechat the very least read the changelog and see what has happened before you go installing00:56
michael__and i would actually like to post it on the web somewhere that i have sucessfully have installed some unsupported debian packaages and they work fine with kubuntu00:56
DaSkreechmichael__: That's common knowledge it's easy to do00:57
bazhangmichael__, that is not supported00:57
DaSkreechmichael__: but still not something that you should recommend wholesale to all people for all packages00:57
p_quarles"unsupported" doesn't usually mean "doesn't work" -- it more often means "that would be wasting our time because there are better ways of doing that"00:57
bazhangmichael__, and this is a support channel00:57
DaSkreechHavin an higher number on a release doesn't mean that it's time to run like a truck on oil to get it installed00:58
michael__well this is a issue with kubuntu just another os that should allow compiling00:58
DaSkreechmichael__: It does we have said that many times00:58
bazhangmichael__, but we had this same conversation just a few days ago00:58
p_quarlescompiling isn't something you can "allow" -- Kubuntu contains all the tools to do this00:58
p_quarlesthat doesn't mean you *should* compile a trivial revision of Pidgin for no reason00:59
DaSkreechp_quarles: at least one minor number up so possibly not trivial but regardless...00:59
michael__so this so called ./install build-essential will allow it compile the source and make it installable01:00
p_quarlesDaSkreech: sure, but there's nothing said so far about which feature is so important :)01:00
ActionParsnipmichael__: no01:00
DaSkreechp_quarles: I don't think that michael__ knows of one01:00
ActionParsnipmichael__: sudo apt-get install bulid-essential01:00
ActionParsnipmichael__: then, cd in to the pidgin source folder01:00
ActionParsnipmichael__: then run ./configure01:00
ActionParsnipmichael__: it will tell you any deps you have not met01:01
p_quarlesit's probably a good idea to run sudo apt-get build-dep pidgin as well01:01
p_quarles"good idea" being relative here01:01
* DaSkreech chuckles01:01
ActionParsnipp_quarles: even if the version is older on the repo?01:01
p_quarlesActionParsnip: I'm not saying it will work -- but the newer version may use the same dependencies01:02
michael__does kubuntu and ubuntu support the repo files or not.01:02
ricardo_#kubuntu-es01:02
ActionParsnipp_quarles: maybe it needs newer stuff, but it cant hurt01:02
ActionParsnipmichael__: if you can get them off the standard repos then yes01:03
ActionParsnipmichael__: you may even have to compile the dependancys if you cant find a repo with teh version the new pidgin requires01:03
=== _neversfelde is now known as neversfelde
ActionParsnipDaSkreech: at least he's up for a challenge, he'll learn about his system some01:03
ActionParsnipDaSkreech: so its not all bad01:04
michael__forget the repos, i will stick with debian packages.01:04
michael__kubuntu is one os that nice, but still have some issues with01:04
ActionParsnipmichael__: there are billions of distros of linux01:04
ActionParsnipmichael__: ubuntu isnt for everyone01:05
michael__i know, thats why when trying them i installed kubuntu which is based on debian, is nice os01:05
michael__but i still have few issues with kubuntu but not serious from preventing me from using it.01:06
ActionParsnipmichael__: i can suggest mandriva or suse for a beginner / mid level user01:06
michael__one thing actionparsnip, you do not know , is that kubuntu is based on DEBIAN distro.01:06
bazhangmichael__, he knows01:07
bazhangmichael__, using debian packages directly with ubuntu/kubuntu is not supported nor wise01:07
ActionParsnipmichael__: yes its based on debian, but it isnt debian01:07
michael__then why i say it and someone says, its not based on debian01:07
ActionParsnipmichael__: hence why mixing debian debs and ubuntu debs is not advised01:08

snarksterwhy is it that when I goto upgrade to the 4.1.85 I get errors?19:49
IchI was running into some persistant package list bugs with 8.06, and resolved to do a fresh installation of kubuntu, thinking that what I had learned since I origonally installed it would help me make it work this time...19:49
IchOnce the 8.10 installer (this disc) had gotten to the partitioning/installing phase, it decided that it would not work, and choked.19:49
IchI tried to put the old (8.06) disc in.  That also choked.  I put an old hard drive in, to see if the current hard drive was the problem.  It roached the hard drive, then choked.19:49
IchError messages varied.  Some blamed the disc, some blamed the drive.  There is an IOerror somewhere between the surface of the optical disc and the platter of the hard disc.19:50
IchThe cd seems to choke only when I try to install it.  I could log onto chat on another PC and try repeatedly reinstalling, so I could give you more details...19:50
IchI have tried many times and many diffrent ways, and I'm stumped.19:50

legodudeIch: how about network install?19:51
IchYou know, that just may be the problem.  Should I go get an old CD reader/writer and try that one?19:51
