ericrostany idea how to set a usb audio device as the default in xfce?00:00
jmichaelxwould anyone here know how to get the debian menu to show up in the xfce menu?00:44
crimsunhave you installed the 'menu' package?00:46
jmichaelxyes. i have menu and menu-xdg installed... and have also run update-menus00:49
ermovedjmichaelx, did you open xfce menu editor and make sure the system menu is included?00:54
jmichaelxi do have 'other' listed in my xfce menu, but i don't really think that is the debian menu... i don't think it quite lists everything00:54
ermovedwhat about system00:55
jmichaelxermoved: i didn't. i can look.00:55
ermovedthere should be an entry to --include-- the "system" menu items00:55
jmichaelxwellm system is just a short list and is always in the xfce menu00:55
ermovedno00:56
jmichaelxyeah, but that is not the same as the debian menu00:56
ermovedwell okay, there is the "system" section in xfce menu, but there is also the "system menu" that should be included00:56
ermovedhmm.. try selecting "use custom menu file" and selecting the menu file created by menu-xdg?  i'm at a loss.00:57
jmichaelxhmm00:58
ermovedtotally baffled as to what is missing/what you need.  the menu is typically automatically updated and includes everything...00:59
jmichaelxare you aware of what the debian menu is?00:59
ermovedapparently not01:00
jmichaelxfor example, i want to see some gnome & kde utilities in my xfce menu that it is not listing... the debian menu lists everything01:01
ermovedright01:01
ermovedmy xfce menu lists all my gnome and kde programs.  this is why im confused.01:01
ermovedhttps://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/menu-xdg/+bug/7131701:02
jmichaelxthat may be, although i have never seen the xfce menu list everything like you are saying.01:02
ermovedyou can add it to your xfce menu if you follow that link01:02
ermovedjust edit menu.xml01:02
jmichaelxok, i appreciate it.... i didn't recall having had such a hard time adding the debian menu in the past. this bug repot explains it.01:04
jmichaelxreport*01:04
ermovednp01:05
ermovedi'm still baffled, though01:05
ermovedall my apps show up in the xfce menu01:05
ermovedwierd.01:05
jmichaelxi think if you check , there are actually packages installed on your system that are not listed in your xfce menu.... that has always been the case01:06
llllluishello everyone good nite 2 u all01:06
ermovedi'm checking now, actually01:06
jmichaelxermoved: that is actually the case with any desktop environment... gnome and kde are the same way. many things are not in the default menus.01:08
ermovedi must be missing a package... cause my "debian menu" entry is empty.01:09
ermovedhaw01:09
llllluisi really love to switch to xubuntu, but i found that we can try it before intalling it and the reason 4 me not to is cause i got this Kyocera 650 from Iusacell to get internet access and while on trial i amazingly saw that xubuntu do reconize my Kyocera, the problem is that it keeps discconecting from it and also it keeps closing the browser can somebody tell me how to fix this pls???????01:09
ermovedhmm.. now i cant right click my menu and deselect the option to use menu.xml01:12
ermovednice01:12
llllluisso does anyone knows how to fix my problem pls01:15
llllluisso guys does any of you knows how can i fix this pls???????01:30
llllluisok guys if this is the case can some one at least refer me with somebody or someplace where i can find how to solve this pls???????01:35
camerongroomwould somebody please help me get my bottom taskbar back in gnome01:36

jdwpom.msg nicserv identify qazwsx09:33
jdwpomSo, I know this is one of those 'retard' questions, but I was wondering if there's a long list of everything that starts up after usplash, anywhere on my machine?  Something's bringing it down, it's not the panel, window manager, desktop or a couple of other programs (firefox included) and I'm just going to go all trial-and-error, running each one off a terminal until I find what's causing...09:36
jdwpom...the problem, see.  THEN I'll probably be back here asking what I can do about it.09:36
jdwpomdon't make me pull the 'Linux is crap' card out, people.09:38
TheSheepjdwpom: but it is :)09:39
jdwpomIt SO isn't, it just dislikes me.09:39
TheSheepjdwpom: did you look into the logs?09:40
jdwpomQuite frankly, until today, I've had about, gosh, thre weeks of uptime09:40
TheSheep/var/log/messages.0 should contain the last activity just before last reboot09:41
jdwpomThat .xsession-errors you mentioned earlier didn't sem to say anything obvious to me.    Couldn't find Gonme-Do (I uninstalled it.  Big Whoop.  Hasn't caused issues before) then Segmentation fault.  I suspect that last one's the issue09:42
TheSheepjdwpom: what exactly happens?09:43
jdwpomLogin, desktop background flashes up for a moment, no icons, then I'm booted back to a login screen.09:44
jdwpomMy current plan involves starting everything one-by-one from a terminal, and seeing how far I can get.09:45
TheSheepwhat graphics card do you have?09:46
jdwpom*shrug*  Intel Onboard.  It's working fine at this very second, though.  Just when I try to do a normal boot, it screams at me09:46
TheSheepdisabling compositor might help09:47
jdwpomCompositing's working fine, as we speak.09:47
TheSheepit's crashing X when some programs try something on some video drivers09:47
TheSheep(I know, very specific ;) )09:48
jdwpom(It happens)09:48
TheSheepvideo drivers and trouble with them seem to be the most common reason for X crashing in my experience09:48
jdwpomComing out of failsaf terminal, I can happily start up:  nm-applet, firefox, a KDE-based Mud client, Panel, xfdesktop, xfwm, and anything I click off of the panel, so I can only assume it's some random service.09:49
TheSheepsee autostarted applictions in settings09:50
jdwpomRighty, all unticked bar a network manager.  Will be back shortly with news09:51
* jdwpom hugs The Sheep09:58
jdwpomRight, so we have a boot 'proper' boot.  Good news - not the network manager09:58
jdwpomAnd with only four options to go through to figure it out, this one'll be a doddle from here in.09:58
jdwpomSo, between update notifier, power manager, Print Queue applet and checking for new hardware drivers, which do you think is the most likely culprit?10:00
* jdwpom shrugs10:02
jdwpomI'll just play around.  Thanks anyhow.  Really means a lot.10:03
FlyOnTheWallconsidering this chan has over 60 people in it, it seems quite dead ;P10:20
jdwpomAck.  Seems I'm back at square one, but with a couple of possible clues10:21
jdwpom.xerror shows: nm-applet:23268): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed10:23

FlyOnTheWallweird errors10:26
FlyOnTheWall"weird" as in "not something you'd expect from an out-of-the-box installation"10:27
jdwpomCan't think of anything major that I've done that would mess with startup.  I mean, there's a couple of extra installed programs here and there, but nothing that kicks in at boot.10:28
FlyOnTheWallI assume you've tried deleting any x chaches and such?10:33
FlyOnTheWallI mean, for the user that is about to log in10:33
jdwpomYeah,. figured there might be something odd in a saved session.  No joy, until we hit on those autostarted apps.10:35
jdwpomThat, and, well, now it seems to be happening well after loogin.  Kind of a plus, kind of a minus10:35
FlyOnTheWalliow, not directly good or bad; just different ;)10:38
jdwpomI call it an improvement that I don't have to jump through hoops just to boot :D10:39
FlyOnTheWallah, so you can actually log in now?10:40
jdwpomWell, I could before.  It was the bits AFTER that that weren't working.  And now I seem to be in a state of 'might crash anytime'.10:41
FlyOnTheWallare you certain that's not a hardware issue?10:42
FlyOnTheWalllike, a damaged PSU or faulty memory?10:42
jdwpomI'd love to think so, but I managed to rnu things from the terminal earlier, then left it up while I went to work.  Came back, still going.10:43
FlyOnTheWallI'd suggest running a memory check10:45
FlyOnTheWalljust to be sure10:45
jdwpomRighty, on my way.  Back soonish10:46
FlyOnTheWallDoes anybody know how to adjust the resolution in Xubuntu, when the appropriate resolutions aren't displayed in the list?12:09
ValsumMost likely, an appropiate driver for your gfx card is missing in that case.12:11
FlyOnTheWallwell that's the thing, it's a thin client system12:11
FlyOnTheWallthe only difference is the monitor12:11
FlyOnTheWallall other parts are identical, at least as far as two components of the same model can be identical12:12
FlyOnTheWalland it works on one, and not on the other12:12
ValsumFlyOnTheWall: no idea, sorry.12:21
FlyOnTheWallyeh, me neither ._.12:28
FlyOnTheWallwas hoping there would be life on this channel to get this solved, I've tried so many things already it's getting frustrating banging my head against the wall12:28
FlyOnTheWallI'm starting to believe there's a bug in the Xubuntu LTSP that makes it ignore lts.conf12:29
knome!resolution12:29
ubottuThe X Window System is the part of your system that's responsible for graphical output. To restart your X, type « sudo /etc/init.d/?dm restart » in a console - To fix screen resolution or other X problems: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/Resolution12:29
FlyOnTheWallknome: thanks, but I somehow doubt those instructions apply to an LTSP setup12:30
knomesuppose so. didn't read your previous messages, sorry12:30
knomei'm kind of going already12:30
FlyOnTheWallyeh, np, thanks for some input anyway ;)12:31

karen|can ext3 read ntfs at all, or would i need to make a partition fat32 in order for both windows and xubuntu to read it?15:32
=== pleia2 is now known as psleigha2
ValsumI think it can read it.15:41
karen|anyone around :(?16:27
Odd-rationaleno :P16:29
=== my_key_ is now known as my_key
Odd-rationalexubuntu can read ntfs by default (ntfs-3g). windows can read ext2/3 if you install the correct drivers (http://www.fs-driver.org/). Both can read fat32 by default, but fat32 has some limitations such as a 4 gb size file limit... also, it fragments more than ntfs and ext316:32
Odd-rationalekaren|: ^16:32
karen|thank you :D16:33
Odd-rationalenp16:33
karen|another question too actually16:33
karen|i got gparted so i can resize my xubuntu partition, but it doesnt want to let me do it16:33
karen|any idea why?16:34
Odd-rationalekaren|: well, probably because it is mounted..16:34
karen|i am entirely new to most of this stuff so i dont know what that means16:34
Odd-rationalekaren|: are you on xubuntu? you can't resize the partition if you are using it...16:34
Odd-rationalekaren|: don't worry, we all started somewhere.. :)16:34
karen|so how can i resize it :(16:35
Odd-rationalekaren|: well, do you have the livecd?16:35
karen|no16:35
Odd-rationalekaren|: ok. well you can use the ubuntu or xubuntu livecd. and boot from the cd, so that your hard drive will not be used (or mounted).16:36
karen|hmm k16:36
Odd-rationalekaren|: or, if you don't want to download the whole cd, you can download a disc that only has gparted on it: http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php16:36
Odd-rationalekaren|: also, puppylinux has gparted on it. it is only <100mb to download: http://puppylinux.org/downloads/official-releases/puppy-linux-41216:38
karen|can xubuntu burn the iso correctly?  cuz i dont have a windows program to do it right16:39
Odd-rationalekaren|: yes. you should find brasero installed... at least on the latest version of xubuntu...16:39
karen|ah ha16:41
slow-motionhi16:42
Odd-rationale!hi | slow-motion16:42
ubottuslow-motion: Hi! Welcome to #xubuntu!16:42
karen|okay now after this burns, i can boot to the live-cd and edit the partition?16:43
Odd-rationalekaren|: yes. i would also advise to backup any important data...16:43
Odd-rationalebefore resizing.16:43
karen|would it affect the windows partition too? because that's the only one with important stuff on it16:44
Odd-rationalekaren|: if you are not resizing or moving the windows partition, then it should not.16:44
Odd-rationale(theoretically)16:45
karen|:316:46
karen|thanks Odd, youve been a big help16:46
Odd-rationalenp. i take you are dual booting... i hope you are enjoying xubuntu!16:47
karen|i am dual booting and i am enjoying learning xubuntu :)16:47

crazy2beand "/casper/vmlijuz" as the text19:11
sinboxnothing happens?  you tried the "check CD" option?19:11
crazy2beyes19:11
crazy2bei tried it19:11
sinboxand nothing?  could be a faulty CD19:11
crazy2beit says "check"19:12
crazy2beand the same title19:12
crazy2be"Test Memory" says "memtest"19:12
crazy2beit's the strangest thing ever :/19:13
sinboxhow did you get the CD?  I reckon it's probably faulty19:14
crazy2bei downloaded it from one of the mirrors19:14
crazy2beand burned it with cdburnerxp19:14
christian__crazy2be did you try checking the cd for errors?19:15
crazy2behow?19:16
crazy2bei did the menu option, as i explained allready19:16
crazy2beand that doesn't do anything, just the messagebox19:16
