inanimateIt's amazing how much they did between 3 and 4.00:10
inanimateOr, more importantly, how much a couple nice looking SVGs will really shine up a tiny arcade game.00:10
JontheEchidnaI agree with you there00:13
inanimateKGoldRunner went from being as questionable as Noatun (anybody remember Noatun?) to actually playable.00:14
inanimateWhat purpose does backing up on local save in Kate serve?00:19
wesleyinanimate they are cool indeed00:19
inanimate(It's on by default, so somebody must think it's important.)00:20
m4vthere's never enough backups00:20
inanimateHeh... I guess...00:20
sep1318its true, most people are just too complacent and lucky to care, because they haven't had to need them.00:21
inanimateI just find it odd that it's "backup on save" and not "backup every time *other than* save," because something not getting saved is when you *really* need a backup.00:22
sep1318hmm. well i guess then we'd need to find out what they think the difference is between backup and save?00:23
inanimateNot sure... The backup (the filename with ~ appended) looks to be a verbatim copy of the original.00:24
sep1318my amarok2 just stopped playing anything, and the last update made the collection/playlist/other windowlets in the middle all disappear, so there's not much that i have access to.00:25
sep1318oh, right, the ~ file. last time I checked, that was your last save. so not quite verbatim.00:25
sep1318so you save new stuff, and what you have currently saved goes into the backup.00:26
sep1318like one-step-only version control.00:26
inanimateOh, so you're saying the ~ would be one save behind?00:26
sep1318yeah, at least that's how i'm used to thinking about it.00:26
inanimateAll right, I'll give it a test.00:26
inanimateYou are correct.00:28
inanimateOK, that makes a lot more sense then.00:28
sep1318glad i could help.00:29
inanimateNow all we need is some Kate autosave...00:29

inanimateThe Gods would be disappointed in you...00:36

sep1318hey, at least vlc started using qt00:36
inanimateDefinitely a step in the right direction.00:37
sep1318yupp00:37

_2i'm seriously considering upgrading from ubuntu dapper lts debian etch stable    any thoughts ?12:23
stdinfaileas: The command "sudo shutdown -F -r now" will force a reboot and a filesystem check12:23
faileasstdin: thanks12:23
hyper_chI'd go for lenny12:23
faileasheh12:23
faileasactually its for a VM i'm testing out various backuo software on12:23
_2hyper_ch stable is the only option as far as i'm concerned12:24
hyper_chlenny rc == stable on most distros12:24
faileasmondo failed, i'm trying acronis but it insists both partitions on the box (windows and linux) are borked12:24
_2hyper_ch heh. you don't seem to understand the concept, but thanks.12:24
faileashyper_ch: well yeah, but debian has a slightly unique release system12:24
hyper_chI know... hence debian rc is in most cases more stable than what other distros claim as stable12:25
* faileas has lenny on his file/misc server. pondering swapping to ubuntu server since bitlebee dosen't work on debian for some reason, and i can get it working on ubuntu12:26
faileasstdin: hmm, that didn't make it check12:26
hyper_chfaileas: hdaperms and make it to check after 1 reboot on all the hds... upon next, it wil fsck and then change the hdaperms again12:27
faileashyper_ch: no such command12:27
hyper_chfaileas: hdparm12:28
=== michael is now known as michael__
michael__test12:28
stdinfaileas: you can try "sudo tune2fs -C 99 /dev/device" (whare /dev/device is the partition you want to check)12:29
_2anyway, i think i will try the upgrade and if i can't get that to work out, i'll just install from etch cd12:29
hyper_chor was it tune2fs? I think I met that12:29
hyper_chI meant that12:29
_2hyper_ch yeah tune2fs12:29
=== michael__ is now known as michaeldadmum
_2there is also touch /.autofsck   or some such12:30
_2which will force an fs check   you can look in the init script for the exact filename12:31
stdin/forcefsck12:31
stdinthat's what mine has anyway12:31
faileasstdin: thats dangerous isn't it?12:31
stdinfaileas: what is?12:32
_2my scripts use /.uncleen   </shrugs>12:32
faileasforcing fsck on a running file system?12:32
_2but i wrote them so, what can you expect.12:32
_2faileas heh that's not what that file does12:32
stdinit's not dangerous, it just checks the filesystem12:33
_2faileas it does the same as setting the mount count higher than the maxmountcount12:33
* faileas is a litle confused now12:34
faileasgranted i already did the equivilent on windows and it was quite simple >_>12:34
faileaswould an unclean shutdown force it?12:34
_2redhat systems used to use that file to detect crash state  i.e. they did an rm /forcefsck  during shutdown or reboot    and recreated /forcefsck at boot time    thus if the file was there then the system had died and needed checked12:35
* faileas grumbles... this is supposed to be a SIMPLE simulated dualboot.12:35
_2the file detection is still default in the init script checkrootfs   so you can create that file and reboot to force a check12:36

ubottuThe Ubuntu Kernel gets updated in stages.  If you have the updated kernel, but do not have the corresponding restricted modules, you may be leaving yourself with no X when you reboot.  If you have compiled binary versions of your video driver, eg from the nVidia site, you will need to recompile them for the new kernel.  This is normal, and not a bug.12:39

pm124493Sure. I have set the BIOS to boot from CDROM first. I have also tried F12 at boot to select the boot device from a list. The computer looks at the CDROM on boot and then skips the CDROM and goes to the first HDD and begins to boot GRUB.14:58

Dragnslcrprometheus77- I've seen that error a few times, and I'm pretty sure it's the file that's broken, not your player23:23
