knomelooks like there is different revisions of that card with different chipsets.00:00
ilmobI get no output when i type lspci | grep DWL00:01
knomek00:01
knomeactually what i'm wondering is how to enable wep...00:01
ilmobI currently have a totally open network and still unable to connect and go to the internet00:02
ilmobthe computer is seeing that there is a network there00:02
knomehmm...00:02
ilmobI don't have an IP00:02
knomei'm actually quite weaponless00:02
knomehave you asked #ubuntu ?00:02
ilmobnope00:02
ilmobi can try there00:02
ilmobis it the same as xubuntu?00:02
ilmobsame commands and gui and everything?00:03
knomethis is not xubuntu specific00:03
ilmobohh00:03
ilmobok00:03
knomeso #ubuntu would also be ok00:03
ilmoboh god this is not for noobs like i thought00:03
knomeit should be - usually most of the thigs work out of the box...00:03
knomeand i agree the ubuntu bureaucracy etc. is a bit complicated...00:03
ilmobmy windows laptop worked right out of the box I was set up in seconds00:04
knomeyes, that's what ubuntu is heading at.00:04
knomehowever, we must reverse-engineer a lot of things and that slows the whole process down00:04
ilmobI've been at this for almost 5 hours to connect to the internet and also the graphics are messed up. all the little buttons look like static like when the tv is broken and snowy00:05
ilmoblol00:05
ilmobit's a disaster00:05
knomeuhh...00:05
ilmobnot the OS00:05
knomesounds like a really bad hardware configuration for linux :)00:05
ilmobI mean my adventure in trying to get it working on a small laptop00:05
knomesmall laptop = ?00:06
ilmobvaio pcg c1vp00:06
knomek00:06
ilmoba lot of people have put linux distros on this machine00:06
knomeactually...00:06
knomedoes it differ a lot from vaio pcg c1v[x] ?00:07
ilmobno00:08
knomeone good bet would be to buy a cheap'o linux-supported usb wlan dongle00:09
knomeof course that's not the ideal solution, but at least you could get it temporarily working00:10
knomeand you could of course use that dongle in other machines as well if needed00:10
ilmobI don't think it's the card00:11
ilmobthe card finds the networks00:11
ilmobit's a setting for sure00:11
knomeall automatic should just work00:12
knomedid TheSheep ask you to try to  set up manual ip configuration?00:13
ilmobyeah dunno how to do that00:15
ilmoband quite frankly I need to know how to fix it anyways when i travel to hostels with internet00:15
ilmobthis is purely a travel notebook because of it's size00:15
knomeof course00:15
knomedid you get network manager running?00:15
knomei remember having a problem like that00:16
knomeasking for wep pass even if i had wpa00:16
ilmobyeah and I see my network and I took off all encryption and have it completely open and yet it says connected but when I go to firefox and enter www.google.com it comes up with a page load error because it's not actually connected00:16
knomejust can't remember how it was fixed...00:16
knomewhat if you try 209.85.171.100 ?00:17
knome(instead of google.com)00:17
ilmobnope00:20
ilmobit fails to connect because it's not connected00:20
knomeok, so it's not a dns issue :P00:20
knomeso are you connecting to a router?00:20
ilmobyeah00:20
knomecan you check from its settings if it sees the computer as connected?00:20
ilmobyup well it's an SMC8014w-g00:20
ilmobI don't know how to do that00:21
ilmobi look at my windows machine and i look at other connected computers and see the linux notebook is not on the network00:21
knome192.168.0.1 on the windows pc00:21
ilmoboh yeah I am in the router00:22
knomeso does it show the vaio as connected?00:22
ilmobwhere would I see that?00:23
knomeuh...00:23
knomethat's a very good question00:24
ilmobyeah...00:24
knomemaybe a tab 'status' or sth?00:24
ilmoboops00:25
ilmobsorry lol but that's what was in the router00:25
ilmobdid that help?00:26
ilmobanyways i'm pretty confident we can say no it is not there00:26
knomeok...00:27
knomei would like to know if you could connect if you'd do a manual ip configuration00:27
ilmobok cool. how do I do that?00:29
knome!ip00:31
ubottuSorry, I don't know anything about ip00:31
knome!network00:31
ubottuWireless documentation can be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs00:31
knomegosh!00:31
robilewhy do updates always have to use ADDITIONAL space. why cant they just REPLACE the old files :/00:33
ilmobok, I have no idea how to do it from those instructions. honestly like it's okay forget it\00:33
knomeilmob, basically just right-click -> edit connections and edit the wireless connection00:33
ilmobI'm just going to go back to windows00:33
robilewas nice to meet u though00:34
knomeilmob, you might check that if you got wpa enabled there00:34
knomeilmob, just for the sake of looking ;)00:34
knomerobile, updating has to use the space anyway :P00:34
knomebecause you don't want to install remotely :P00:35
ilmobohh you mean network settings?00:35
knomeso you need the installation files00:35
knomeilmob, yes00:35
ilmobok I'm there but i don't know what to type int the window thing00:35
robileknome, ah, the size is just the install files and not the additional space that will be used after the installation?00:35
knomeilmob, is there a tab "wireless security"00:35
robilei diddnt know what but yes, that makes sense00:35
knomerobile, well, apps also get larger00:36
knomerobile, and you need additional libraries00:36
knomerobile, but want to keep the system backwards-compatible because of app X which still needs the old version00:36
robileknome, no i dont, i would just want security stuff fixed. i dont need additional features or anything =)00:36
ilmobno00:36
ilmobbut I don't have any security on my network I took it off just to see if I could get connected00:37
knomerobile, just enable only security updates00:37
knomeilmob, ok00:37
robileknome, ill try to find that, thx =)00:37
knomerobile, in synaptic, settings -> repositories -> tab updates00:38
ilmobI'm sorry if I'm terse i'm just really tired I started this about 5 hours ago and I'm so tired of documentation and FAQs I don't understand00:38
ilmoband hours of troubleshooting with people not working00:38
knomeilmob, np. i can see00:38
knome...your point00:38
ilmobso don't take it personally if I'm upset00:38
knomei hope you will take an another look of linux later - maybe with some other HW or the same - it might be supported later00:39
ilmobI'm just upset at the situation. I hate running windows ME but at least it works00:39
knomei've never run windows ME00:39
ilmobit's garbage but it works00:39
knomeonly 3.1, 3.11, 95, 98, 2000, XP and Vista00:39
ilmobit's not my hardware I know that if I can see the network and get signal and all that I know my hardware is okay00:40
ilmobit has to be settings somewhere00:40
knomeilmob, linux doesn't have the same drivers as windows00:40
ilmobnothing I do works and nothing is worth this kind of stress00:40
ilmobI know but others have used this card and hardware before00:40
knomeyes.00:40
robileknome, nice thanks! go celebrate xmas now ;)00:41
sinboxhehe I see you're still here ilmob00:41
knomei'm sure many of these really frustrating situations could be avoided if somebody could give you live support.00:41
ilmobfor the novice user yes00:41
knomerobile, hehe, actually i did it already. for over 20 times. boooooring.00:41
robile:-o00:41
ilmobsinbox at this point I'm just venting before I go to my other irc chats lol00:42
sinboxI had trouble getting wifi when I put xubuntu on my laptop too00:42
ilmob5 hours of not being able to get the bloody internet to work would do the same to you00:42
sinboxthen an hour after I got it sorted my HDD died00:42
knomeactually... i've battled 5+ hours to get the system *booting*00:42
knome;)00:42
ilmobit's just not worth it00:42
sinboxit is once it works00:43
ilmobthe statement that this is a great distro for novices coming from windows is pardon my french bull00:43
robilewhats the problem ilmob ? installing the driver or connecting to the router ?00:43
ilmobconnecting to the router00:43
knomeit's just different people have different points of time/work they can take for a thing00:43
sinboxyou have a french bull?00:43
knomeilmob, for 90%+, it actually *is*, as everything is working out of the box :)00:43
robiledont u find the network?00:44
knomeilmob, you just can't disagree with that. but of course i see it doesn't help your situation a lot.00:44
robilealready used ifconfig / iwconfig ?00:44
ilmobyeah00:44
sinboxonly joking  :)  relax and maybe give it a break ilmob, how many time have you rebooted since you've been trying with the wifi?00:44
robileand the preinstalled networker manager doesnt work / find the network ?00:44
ilmobI don;t know I have many people who would disagree with that even some of my friends who are much better at this than me00:44
ilmobin fact I've been told everyone messes up their first install00:45
ilmobwhich means it's not easy00:45
knomeilmob, i've had many succesful first installs.00:45
sinboxyou learn from your mistakes :)00:45
knomeilmob, but also, it's always *way* better if somebody who is able to sort things sets it up for you for the first time00:45
ilmobI find the network fine00:46
ilmoboh robile has left lol00:46
knomei'm sure he will be back soon00:46
knomelooks like some connection problems ;)00:46
sinboxah well, if it makes you feel better ilmob my laptop has windows on it and since an update last january I have been unable to connect to wifi networks: I can see the networks but the windows wifi thingmajig says cable disconnected when you know, there is no cable00:48
ilmobI've never had a problem networking with windows in my life honest to god00:48
sinboxah well00:49
ilmoblol00:49
sinboxyou're lucky then :)  that particular update fucked up at least 7 machines I look after, and I had to do a restore point and cancel the update altogether, it removed the whole tcp/ip stack/whatever on a friend's machine, and that was on an ethernet connection00:50
knomei've never had a clean connection on windows00:50
sinboxas the saying goes: YMMV00:50
ilmobanyways I'm off to re-install windows thanks for your help though i know you all tried hard to help00:53
ilmoband it was a pleasure chatting00:53
knomenp.00:53
ilmobit's too bad this didn't work out00:53
knomemaybe we'll see again.00:53
sinboxmaybe00:54

sinboxilmob is in ubuntu now :) so still trying01:21
sikuni am having problems connecting to a ad-hoc network, it just doesn't connect, if its a router/ap i am connecting to it works fine01:39
RakkoI'm trying to boot Xubuntu Hardy (I know it's not current) on an old computer of mine. It runs Debian fine, but the Hardy CD just drops it into a BusyBox shell. How do I fix this?02:07
knomeRakko, have you tried the safe graphics mode?02:09
Rakkoyeah. same thing :(02:09
Rakkoand I have tried it with both the onboard Intel graphics and with an old GeForce 202:10
RakkoI see something here about that happening when booting from USB, but I'm booting from CD02:11
knomehmh.02:12
knomeso you're trying to use it as live cd, eH?02:13
Rakkoyeah02:14
knomeso whn booting with usb, does it still have some problems or does it load correctly?02:15
knomehow much ram do you have?02:15
RakkoI haven't booted from usb02:15
Rakko512 MB02:16
knomewhat did you talk about booting from usb then?02:16
Rakkobecause of this page: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/busybox/+question/3020102:16
knomeok, so have you tested the cd for errors02:17
Rakkonot lately02:20
knome...so what does that actually mean? have you used it succesfully for other pcs?02:21
Rakkoyes02:22
knomewhat happens if you type 'startx' in the shell?02:27
RakkoI tried booting without quiet & splash02:28
knomeok?02:28
knomewhat happened02:28
Rakkoand it acted like it was mounting an ext3 and starting kjounalfs about a million times02:29
Rakkoand during that it kept talking about a read error with fd002:29
knome...02:29
Rakkos/kjournalfs/kjournald02:29
knomei'm out of ideas already.02:29
knomemaybe you want to wait somebody more technical to turn around02:30
Rakkothen it goes into busybox02:30
RakkoI don't see what ext3 would have to do with fd002:30
knomewel...02:30
knome+l02:30
Rakkooh, there was an exception on ata1.01 too02:30
knomemaybe you would like to append that information to one of the bugs about this.02:31
Rakkook02:31
RakkoI will try startx, btw02:31
knomeand subscribe02:31
knomeyeah.02:31
Rakkomaybe I should try intrepid02:32
knomeyeah. might give better results :)02:32
knomeplease still add the information02:33
Rakkostartx is not found02:33
knomek02:33
knomethen just add info and try intrepid with better luck.02:33
Rakkowill try it without floppy and hard drives02:34
knomeif you don't want to wait/conf02:34
Rakkoyeah02:41
RakkoI don't want to retype all the output02:41
knomehmm..02:41
knome!apport02:41
ubottuSorry, I don't know anything about apport02:41
RakkoI'm waiting for it to boot, after having disconnected the HD and FD... but now it's kind of stuck02:42
Rakkokeeps saying I/O error of fd002:42
knomeyeah02:43
knomesounds like something is broken02:43
sinboxanyone knows what could cause this error:03:00
sinboxmake: ./mkdirs: Command not found03:00
knomemissing file? :)03:01
sinboxhmmm, so I guess I'm gonna have to try and see if I can hunt the down the developper to find out more then03:02
sinbox:/03:02
knomewhat are you trying to build?03:02
sinboxliveice-sn0403:04
knomesn04 is version number, or...?03:05
sinboxyes, it was the last one made, quite a few years back now, got the source from sourceforge03:08
sinboxthe previous versions only supported icecast and not icecast203:08
knomehttp://web.arm.ac.uk/~spm/software/liveice_setup.html ?03:08
knomea-ha..03:08
knomecan you paste me a link03:08
sinboxhttp://liveice.sourceforge.net/03:11
sinboxsource download: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=10272203:11
knomebuilds ok.03:13
knomeis the problem in make or make install?03:13
knomedo you have build-essential? :P03:13
sinboxI'm using checkinstall actually instead of make install03:14
knome(i did ./configure and make)03:14
knomeso that is the problem?03:14
sinboxthat's when the problem appears, ./configure and make run fine03:14
knomeok, let me test03:14
knomeshould i give any arguments for checkinstall?03:15
sinbox-D  so it build a .deb file03:15
knomeyes..03:16
knomethe problem occurs03:16
sinbox[deleted expletive] I could have got the deb file of you if it hadn't ;-)03:17
knomeyup03:17
knome64bit :P03:18
sinboxfrom looking at the mailing list archives I doubt I'll get an answer to any query I have :/03:19
nueanyone here?03:20
sinboxsort of03:21
nuejoy..03:21
sinboxeasily pleased then03:22
nuelooking for help haha.03:22
knomesinbox, http://packages.ubuntu.com/intrepid/i386/liveice/filelist03:23
knomesinbox, according to that list, you might just hack it ;P03:24
knomesinbox, or do you *really* need a .deb?03:24
knomejust cp files into locations:)03:24
knomei know it's dirty...03:24
sinboxthe version in the repositories does not support icecast2 unfortunately knome so I'm not sure if that would work, but I'll check the filelist against the other one to see if anythig is missing03:27
knomesinbox, well you have the app already built as make succeeds.03:27
sinboxdirty is good03:27
sinboxooopss offtopic03:27
knomesinbox, so you don't really need anything but to have the bin in the right place03:27
knomesinbox, you could also use /usr/bin03:28
knome...or just run the bin from the path you built it in03:29
sinboxoh ok I get it now D'oh, sorry I'm still newbish at building programms and all that :)03:29
knomenp03:29
sinboxso nue did you have a question?03:29
knome!ask | nue03:29
ubottunue: Please don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line, so others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-)03:29
nuemm.. First time using this so uh... I'm matching up FAT formats between XP and xubuntu with a USB device in trying to transfer files. However, it seems that no matter what I try, it ends up being reading as FAT 16 through fdisk on terminal. XP registers it as FAT32 but Xubutu registers it as FAT16. The thing is, Xubuntu sees the mounted device but it won't allow me to copy any files over, as I suspect it doesn't support FAT16. Alread03:34
knomenue, your message got cut from "Alread"...03:35
charlie-tcaknome: canĀ“t we read FAT16?03:37
knomewell uh, we can i suppose03:37
knomeand i really don't see a reason why it is recognised as FAT16..03:38
charlie-tcaUnless it is a factory partition FAT16 and a second FAT32 partition?03:39
nuewell03:39
nuei already deleted all partitions03:39
nuethat was originally on it03:39
nueso its only printing out one.03:39
nue"Already attempted to format both through XP and terminal as FAT32."03:39
knomenue, which xubuntu version?03:40
nue8.1003:40
nueit sees the device and everything just fine... only that i can't actively move any files onto the HD.03:40
knomenue, what says 'mount' when usb disc is plugged?03:41
nuenot sure i follow.03:41
knomenue, in terminal, type 'mount' (without 's)03:41
knomenue, and paste the output in...03:41
nueOH.03:41

nueassuming then that its just... stuck as fat16... would it be then, that xubuntu can't support fat16 formats?03:59
knomemeh.04:04
knomehave you checked the disc for errors?04:05
nuelol irrelevant.04:05
nuenot yet.04:05
knomenot really.04:05

nueoh well.04:05
nuei'll try with a newer usb.04:05
nuehopefully that'll work!04:06
knomebeing fat is not really mediasexy now ;)04:06

knomei've been up for 20 hours with 4 hours of sleep last "night"04:08

ilmobok lol after many grueling hours and the help of many apparently my computer boots to ipv6 instead of 406:15
ilmobis there a way to get xubuntu to boot to ipv4 instead of 6? I can't find any documentation on this or I'm simply just not understanding it much like this entire linux experience06:16

krkrklllytlol, that was funny16:41
krkrklllytI need to remotely access a windows.16:41
TheSheepthe simplest way is just ssh16:41
TheSheepyou need an ssh server running on the remote machine, and an ssh client on yours16:42
TheSheepssh client is installed by default on all ubuntus16:42
moof_can anyone give me some help configuring my wlan card?16:43
krkrklllytyea, but can I access it graphically using SSH? i don't remeber if it was possible, TheSheep.16:43
TheSheepkrkrklllyt: if you ssh with -X, you can start graphical apps over ssh tunnel16:43
krkrklllythm16:44
TheSheepkrkrklllyt: they will run on the remote machine, but display its windows on yours16:44
krkrklllytok, but the machine I need to access is a Windows XP.16:44
TheSheepah, then ssh is out of question16:45

moof_could i get some help configuring my wireless card for xubuntu? not exactly sure what's wrong.17:28
TheSheep!wifi | moof_17:49
ubottumoof_: Wireless documentation can be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs17:49
moof_well, let me explain a bit. i have the hardware drivers for my wireless card activated, but when i try to start wifi-radar it gives me the error "No wifi-device found. Exiting."18:02
swiftarrowjust installed xubuntu 8.10 on Dell Vostro 1510 and I have no sound18:48
swiftarrowHelp please!  Noobie here, with mute computer... using xubuntu 8.10 64 bit on Dell Vostro 1510 Audio codec is ALC 268.  Where do I go from here?18:50
TheSheepswiftarrow: you have a volume control on your panel?18:51
swiftarrowTheSheep: thank you for your reply.  No I do not19:05
swiftarrowI tried to add it via add topanel, but it wouldn't show up either.  Furthermore, although it seems to play the audio files, no sound comes out19:07
TheSheepswiftarrow: you can add the volume control by dragging it and dropping to the panel from the list19:10
TheSheepswiftarrow: what files are you trying to play? mp3? they need a codec installed19:11
TheSheep!mp319:11
ubottuFor multimedia issues, this page has useful information: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats - See also http://help.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/desktopguide/C/common-tasks-chap.html - But please use free formats if you can: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FreeFormats19:11
swiftarrowThanks, I know about that, and installed the necessary codecs19:12
TheSheepswiftarrow: try starting alsamixer from terminal and make sure it's not muted...19:13
swiftarrowOk, now the control is there, Im going to try and test it19:13
swiftarrowThe Sheep: now it does play, but there is a constant varying click, seems to go faster and slower... And it does not belong in this track.  I have listened to it before... Thanks so much that it is making noise now though...19:16
TheSheepswiftarrow: check the buffer size in your player, if it has such an option...19:17
swiftarrowTheSheep: the clicking seems to go up in intensity with the volume of the song that I'm playing.  I'm using Listen Music player, I dont see any buffer size.  Will try with Movie player19:19
swiftarrowBTW, the song just ended, and the clicking petered out after the song19:19
swiftarrowMovie Player does the same thing... the frequency of the clicks and their intensity is directlly proportional to the intensity of the sound file being played!19:21
TheSheepnot sure how to get rid of it19:21
swiftarrowis there any way to re-install the audio drivers?19:21
TheSheepthat wouldn't help19:22
TheSheepit's not windows :)19:22
swiftarrowThis is very strange....  Yea, sorry... Is it possible to reload the audio kernel modules?19:23
swiftarrowperhaps download new binaries?  What packages should I look for?19:23
swiftarrowI know there are proprietory drivers for Nvidia, and the NIC, is there anything similar for the Realtek ALC 268 (that's apparently what I Have)19:25
TheSheepno, they are built into kernel19:26
TheSheepit's not the drivers19:26
TheSheepdo you also have it with other sound files?19:27
TheSheepor sound from other applications?19:27
swiftarrowI just tried using the sound recorder, it llists four inputs: Capture, Capture 1, Digital, and Front Mic Boost.  Only Capture 1 registered any levels, although it did not seem to record what I said.  When playing it back, again the clicks, proportional to the intensity of the sound (this time an even frequency, about 2 or 3 per second, indicating to me that it recorded at a high level)19:29
swiftarrowI do get the system beep without any clicks.19:30
TheSheepswiftarrow: try muting the mike19:33
swiftarrowTrying it19:33
swiftarrowAwesome!! You are a genius.  Can you please explain what made you think of this?19:34
swiftarrowIt's clear sound now19:34
swiftarrowThank you so much19:35
TheSheepthe sound you were playing was recorded back19:35
TheSheepI guess19:35
swiftarrowSo the Mic is accepting input all the time?19:35
swiftarrownot just when recorrding?19:35
TheSheepapparently19:36
swiftarrowso it was feedback.... Thank you so much... Your the Guy!19:36
swiftarrowNow I've got to go to bed.  You've made my day.  Hope someday I'll be versed enough to pass the favor on.19:37
