tmmoyerIf I am building a custom kernel, and building the debs for it, is there anyway to add extra version information such that I can install the same version of the kernel without my custom modifications?  For example, I have linux-image-2.6.24-22-server installed and I would like to patch it and rebuild it.  When I install the custom version, how can I make is so that I can have both the Ubuntu package installed and my custom packag03:49
leprasmurfhello all.  I'm wondering, what language is ubuntu programmed in?  The kernel is C right?03:56
tmmoyerthe kernel is in C yes, the other applications are in a variety of languages03:59
tmmoyeris there a particular application you are looking at?03:59
leprasmurfI was wondering about the majority of what ubuntu uses.  so like gnome, or firefox03:59
tmmoyermy guess is some combination of C and C++ with a good mix of scripting languages as well04:00
tmmoyerPerl and Python probably being the most common04:00
tmmoyerRuby and shell scripts too04:00
leprasmurfI'm going from "Programming C" into "Programming C++" in school, and just trying to figure out if I should focus on c++ or just get through it as quickly as possible04:02
ion_Learning many languages never hurts. Learning to think in different ways makes you a better programmer in any language.04:02
tmmoyeri would get comfortable with one before branching out though04:03
ion_Sure04:03
tmmoyerC++ isn't too bad, I started with C and then picked up C++04:03
leprasmurfI've tried to subscribe to the theory of "jack of all languages, master of one"04:03
leprasmurfbut I04:04
leprasmurfbut I'm trying to figure out my one :-)04:04
tmmoyermy current usage tends to be Python with some C thrown in when I need it, Java rarely04:04
tmmoyerno one language is suited to everything04:04
tmmoyerit really depends on what you want to do04:04
leprasmurfI've been thinking about java only for the android :-/ it currently doesn't support c(++)04:04
tmmoyeryup04:05
tmmoyeralthough the android kernel is in C04:05
tmmoyerand being open source, you can do whatever you want with it04:05
tmmoyerandroid is nothing but linux with some extra layers of abstraction04:05
leprasmurfI don't know exactly where I want to bring it, but right now I'm enjoying game programming.  (I made hangman!! :-) )04:06
leprasmurfyeah, but the android API is only java I think04:06
tmmoyeryup04:06
leprasmurfI've still got around 50-60 credits to make it through04:07
leprasmurfbut I like trying to play around on my own04:07
tmmoyergood luck04:07
leprasmurfthanks04:07
tmmoyeri agree with ion_ though, learn a bunch and then choose what fits04:07
leprasmurfwell, I'm already pretty proficient in perl, php, asp, various scripting languages, and HTML (That's a programming language right :-P )04:09
leprasmurfand I've just finished C, going into C++ and .NET is on the agenda04:09
calcpython and bash may also be useful to learn04:11
leprasmurfI love bash, but I've avoided python.04:12
calcwell python is somewhat better than perl, it being a write-only language and all04:13
tmmoyeri like python04:13
tmmoyerit allows for rapid prototyping and is fairly easy to understand04:13
calcheh ;-)04:13
leprasmurfI have heard that python is especially easy to learn/understand04:14
calcleprasmurf: yes i'm not certain but i think it was probably designed with the failings of perl in mind04:14
calceven the author of perl code can often not understand what they have written, but it is much easier to pick up random python code and understand what is going on04:15
leprasmurfit uses tabbing rather than encapsulation though, right?04:16
tmmoyerhaving worked with both perl and python, i can honestly say I prefer python for its readability and eas of use04:16
tmmoyeryes whitespace matters in python04:16
calcleprasmurf: it just uses whitespace as a delimiter rather than braces04:16
Treenakstmmoyer: well, only leading whitespace ;)04:17
tmmoyeryes04:17
leprasmurfsee, I, personally, think that sucks04:17
tmmoyersorry04:17
leprasmurfI like my curly brackets :-)04:17
tmmoyeri thought so too at first, but it is actually very nice04:17
tmmoyeri feel that it forces me to write neater code04:17
leprasmurfuntil you get on a tiny screen or terminal and all your crap is wrapped and vim's % doesn't work :-)04:18
tmmoyeri generally don't wrap anything in vim04:18
tmmoyerso i guess i don't notice that04:18
leprasmurfhehe, that helps04:19
leprasmurfalright, well thanks for the advice04:20
leprasmurfI have to go work on my mythbox (stupid frontend spawning 6 instances)04:21
leprasmurfhave a good one04:21
tmmoyerleprasmuf: no problem04:21
tmmoyergood luck with classes04:21
leprasmurfthanks04:21
leprasmurf96 in C at least :-)04:21
tmmoyerso anyone here know a lot about building custom kernels?04:21
tmmoyerhow hard would it be to create a custom flavour for the kernel build?04:26
tmmoyerfor example take the server flavour and "fork" a custom flavour called server-custom?04:26

stgraberbryce: I just had a look at that broken ATI laptop again, bug report is bug 31186705:43
ubottuLaunchpad bug 311867 in xserver-xorg-video-ati "X crashes when loading the radeon driver on Jaunty" [Undecided,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/31186705:43
stgraberbryce: the laptop is currently in the broken state, please ask for anything that may help fixing it (I'll have to revert to the previous packages on Monday)05:44
brycestgraber: Xorg.0.log from each of a) stock xorg.conf (or no xorg.conf), b) with XAA specified for AccelMethod, and c) with EXA specified05:48
brycestgraber: you indicate that others with similar hardware will have the same problem - do you have some references to other instances of this problem?05:49
stgraberwell, at least the two laptops I have at the office with the same video card show the problem05:50
stgraberbryce: ok, all three Xorg.0.log are attached05:54
stgraberbryce: the diff between the EXA and XAA one is really interesting as it's basically nothing05:55
stgraberbryce: (other than the date, the VT and the fact that it reads the AccelMethod line)05:55
sorenfabbione: Yes?08:49
fabbionesoren: hey dude... having nice xmas vacation?09:01
fabbionesoren: did you ever notice hardy kernel OOPS when you set kvm vcpus > 1?09:01
fabbionesoren: it's reproducible all the time.. the list of OOPS is endless. It also recovers but performances of the overall system gets _extremely_ bad09:02
fabbionesoren: the kernel that OOPS is the host.. the guest doesn't see anything09:03
sorenfabbione: Hmm... Nope. I've seen a few issues here and there with smp guests, but nothing as severe as that. Exactly which kernel version?10:11
fabbionesoren: whatever is in hardy latest updates.10:30
fabbionesoren: i'll collect stuff for you later and file a bug report. If you haven't seen it before I doubt you have data anyway10:30
sorenfabbione: I don't have much hardware available, so I don't actually have any hardy boxes for testing :(10:32
fabbionesoren: well.... anyway.. it's food time..10:33
sorenfabbione: Sure.10:34
sorenfabbione: ...but yes, a bug report would be much appreciated.10:34
fabbionesoren: no worries... will do later today'10:34

michael48I would like to know whether usplash 0.5.25 does support resolutions other than 800x600, 640x480, 1365x768 and 1024x768, like it happened to be with THEME_VERSION 2. I tried to compile a theme with resolutions other than those, and the theme compiles but doesn't work. Any suggestion?19:53
directhexis your theme a 4:3 resolution?19:57
michael48directhex I would like a 1400x1050 resolution, is that 16:9?20:01
directhexmichael48, 16:10. but usplash doesn't technically support non-4:3 resolutions - you're meant to take the theme you want to use, then squash it with borders so that it's saved in a 4:3 res, but gets stretched out again when displayed20:02
terlihey. you. developers. I've got a feature request, and it's going to be implemented by jaunty, or else.20:03
terliI want this FW:20:03
terlito mark shuttleworth himself20:03
crimsunterli: send an e-mail to ubuntu-devel-discuss at lists dot ubuntu dot com20:04
terliWhen Ubuntu updates, it consumes an inordinate amount of bandwidth downloading the full packages. This should not be. Get to work implementing some form of -diff or delta for .deb packages.20:04
michael48directhex Thanx a lot, so you mean I can add even to spalsh 0.5.25 what ever themes as far as they are pure 4:3 res?20:05
stgrabermichael48: yeah, that should work, then usplash will take care of the rendering based on the usplash.conf file20:06
directhexmichael48, i haven't checked very recent versions of usplash, but the case when i described was the state of play for intrepid20:06
directhexterli, or else what?20:07
terliI didn't specify an "else".20:07
terlio wait, I did.20:07
terlior else, erm, umm20:07
terliyou will all get a nasty cold.20:08
terliso there.20:08
directhextoo late.20:08
michael48directhex stgraber BUT I googled for 4:3 resolutions and 1400x1050 *IS* 4:3 according to a list I found... No way to add such resolution to usplash-theme-ubuntu.c to the standard ones and to get a working .so theme!20:13
directhexoh, hm, so it is. i was thinking of 1680x105020:14
=== cjwatson_ is now known as cjwatson
cjwatsonmaxb: just soyuz is fine20:15
michael48directhex Whilst 1365x768 IS a 16:9 and the usplash-theme-ubuntu.c ships with that resolution ( I mean the standard usplash-theme source package). How's that? If I managed to understand that, I could grab the ratio of this new usplash version ...20:16
directhexmichael48, how does your /etc/usplash.conf look?20:16
michael48x=1400 y=105020:17
michael48And in fact I am able to load the theme  I compiled, but it is rendered smaller than my vesafb resolution20:18
michael48which I chose as of 1400x105020:18
directhexhow did you set it at that?20:18
michael48through grub.lst vga=0x34820:19
directhexand where did you get that value from?20:20
michael48 sudo hwinfo --framebuffer20:20
directhexokay, good call.20:20
directhexhm20:20
michael481400x1050 24 bits20:21
directhex"not sure" is the answer now then. i tried looking at the hwinfo source once, and ran screaming20:21
directhexanything past 1280x1024 is a system-specific value20:21
directhexi.e. depends on your gpu. but it sounds like that's not the issue20:21
michael48but dmesg at startup says the console res. is set to 1400x105020:21
directhexbut usplash behaves funny when you use a framebuffer console20:21
directhexwhich is unfortunate20:22
directhexfor the sake of argument, what happens if you turn off the fb console?20:22
michael48well i didn't try that, since i use the console a lot and i want an optimal res. for it20:22
michael48shall i maybe use 16 bit instead of 24 bit?20:23
directhexmight help. might not20:24
directhexusplash needs work to, well, suck less. but the source is a scary place20:25
michael48When I compiled the theme after adding the 1400x1050 pixmaps sudo usplash -c said No theme for res. 1400x1050 available..20:26
terlithere, I sent an email to the lists.20:34
terlinot that I expect any positive feedback.20:34

michael48directhex Hello again. It works now!! I was just compiling without setting the appropriate values for all parameters in the struc. AND I was also probably messing things up with the palette values. I wanted to tell you this so that you don't blame too much yourself or the people mantaining usplash! But creating a personal theme should be a user friendlier task!! Thans again.21:08
