Hal_EmmerichQuestion03:09
Hal_EmmerichCan anyone think of a reason why a computer with Mythbuntu could connect as far as a router config page, but not to the internet, despite other computers on the network being able to connect?03:12
tgm4883_laptopHal_Emmerich, DNS Servers03:39
Hal_Emmerichkk, I tried pinging google via its IP, but I got 100% loss03:39
Hal_EmmerichBut it'll ping the router config page fine03:39
tgm4883_laptopstatic IP or DHCP?03:40
Hal_EmmerichDHCP03:40
tgm4883_laptopinteresting03:41
tgm4883_laptopI had a problem once with nic drivers that were too new giving me problems03:42
tgm4883_laptopnot sure if thats your issue or not03:42
tgm4883_laptopalso, might be worth checking your cabling03:43
Hal_EmmerichI couldn't see it being the issue. It connects to the router fine03:43
Hal_EmmerichIt just absolutely will not connect to things outside the network03:43
tgm4883_laptopit's not a trendnet nic is it?03:43
Hal_Emmerich3com03:43
tgm4883_laptopgigabit?03:44
Hal_EmmerichI don't think so03:44
Hal_Emmerich10/10003:44
tgm4883_laptophmm03:44
tgm4883_laptopsounds fine03:44
tgm4883_laptopI don't know the problem then, if it's getting the IP address, gateway and DNS servers it should be fine03:46
Hal_EmmerichI don't know if its getting DNS server03:47
Hal_EmmerichBut it shouldn't matter03:47
Hal_Emmerichit can't even ping IP's outside of the local network03:47
tgm4883_laptopyou don't have filtering on your router do yoU?03:47
Hal_EmmerichYes I did04:25
Hal_Emmerichproblem solved there, but it lead to another one04:26
Hal_EmmerichBasically, the sound works until I fool with -something-, and then the sound stops working04:26
Hal_Emmerichand the only solution I've found to fix the sound once it goes is reinstall04:26

MythbuntuGuest55I've got a question. I'd like to buy hardware to start using Mythbuntu, I am looking at the "Acer Aspire 5100 TV", I want to make sure that Mythbuntu runs on this mini PC. I burned a mythbuntu Live CD 8.04, but have no clue how I can check that it works with the 5100 TV?? Do you know how to check it (I do run xubuntu)13:48
MythbuntuGuest55Si13:48
lagano clue about that aspire. just try booting it and see if it recognizes the TV card and everything?13:49
lagaof course, it'd be better if you could install mythbuntu13:50
MythbuntuGuest55Where would I be able to see that?13:50
lagaum.. good question. i'm not sure if the mythbuntu live disk comes with a tool to test that..13:50
MythbuntuGuest55You can have a look at the specs here: http://global.acer.com/products/desktop/asl5100.htm, looks like a neat little machine for MythTV13:57
MythbuntuGuest55(Low on power consumption)'13:57
lagathere's nicer stuff for the living room *shrug*13:58
MythbuntuGuest55Thanks for your response laga, how would one normally if it recognizes the TV card and everything?13:59
MythbuntuGuest55see13:59
lagayou can try to find out which tv card it's using13:59
lagaand google that13:59
MythbuntuGuest55Hmmm, the specs seem to change over time and are inonclusive. I found: Avermedia TVtuner M11514:20
styelzi did some more poking on my mythbuntu install and found that all web related tasks fail.. like RSS news and mythstream harvester. mythweather works and i can play streams from mythstream14:20
styelzits like its missing a web browser of sorts.. i dont know :(14:21
MythbuntuGuest55Does anybody else know how to find out if MythBuntu likes the TV Card from the Live CD?14:26
styelztype dmesg |grep "card="14:35
styelzor cat /var/log/dmesg |grep "card="14:36
styelzif it doesnt autodetect your card type. i usually specify that in /etc/modules.d/options  and also make sure your card is loaded via /etc/modules14:37

MythbuntuGuest41hello ive been having  a recurring problem with my mythbuntu system. this is about the third or fourth time having to reinstall mythbuntu due to my inability to diagnose this problem or rectify it. here goes my installation puts the root filesystem on a 10gb partition and my home on a 160gb partition which i figured would be more than adequate. after each installation everything will work great for about a week and then un19:02
jphillipMythbuntuGuest41 putting recordings in your home directory is a bad idea19:03
jphillipmight want to continue stating your problem though19:03
MythbuntuGuest41okay pretty much everything will work fine for a period of about a week and then out of the blue i will start my frontend and it asks what language to use and then states no upnp found and cannot login to database19:06
MythbuntuGuest41afterward i go to backend setup and get basically teh same error messages19:07
MythbuntuGuest41i then open /etc/mythtv/mysql.txt to check all the settings that i should reinput back into the backend setupp and to my surprise this file is empty19:08
MythbuntuGuest41as is /home/.mythtv/mysql.txt19:08
jphillipis your root directory full?19:16
jphillipif that fills up that can cause mysql to crash which would result in possibly losing those settings19:17
Paladineanyone got a link on how to throw mythbuntu onto a USB stick in order to install it on a machine with no optical drive?19:19
* Paladine is in the process of building a 12V 800mA 12W silent mythtv backend19:21
MythbuntuGuest41thank you jphillip i think thats my prob19:22
MythbuntuGuest41i never switched my recordings to the home folder so the 10gb partition quickly filled up and it looks to be full19:23
MythbuntuGuest41are you aware of any way to fix this without  a fresh reinstall where use the entire harddrive and wipe out my other partitions?19:24
jphillipMythbuntuGuest41 I would modify the drive so you have a good portion dedicated just for them19:26
jphilliplike I said before having them in your home is a bad idea19:26
MythbuntuGuest41im just beyond happy to have an answer as to where everything is going wrong becaause this was about my 4th try and i was aout to give up19:26
jphillipcan run into all sorts of permissions issues19:26
jphillipfrom there you should be able to just resetup everything19:26
MythbuntuGuest41cool man i appreciate the help19:27
jphillipmight need to sudo dpkg-reconfigure mythtv-common to regenerate a new mysql password19:27
jphillipthat is if you don't recall the old one19:27
MythbuntuGuest41youve saved me hours of grief19:27
jphillipMythbuntuGuest41 http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/Backup_your_database19:27
jphillipmight want to poke at that, make a backup when everything is all setup so you have an easier restore point19:28
Paladinejphillip, you got a link on how to install mythbuntu from a thumb drive?19:28
MythbuntuGuest41awesome thank you soo much19:28
jphillipPaladine I'd try this: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStick19:29
jphillipnp MythbuntuGuest4119:30
Paladinethanks j, my thin client has no optical drive19:30
PaladineI hope this experiment works19:32
PaladineI am pretty confident the CPU can handle it19:32
jphillipPaladine I use that method for my eee, but never tried with mythbuntu19:34
jphillipmight want to look at some of the mythbuntu diskless options as well19:34
Paladinejphillip, I am turning an HP T5700 Thin Client into a Myth Backend :)19:36
Paladinevery cheap, quiet, small footprint and power efficient setup if I manage to pull it off19:36
jphillipPaladine good luck19:37
jphillipwhat kind of cpu does it have?19:37
Paladinej, 1GHz Crusoe19:37
Paladine1GB PC2100 RAM19:37
Paladine250GB 2.5" IDE Drive19:37
jphillipnot planning on doing HD on it are you?19:38
Paladineand PVR25019:38
Paladinenope19:38
jphillipwhat kind of vide card does it have?19:38
jphillipvideo19:38
Paladineit won't be used for front end so video card doesn't matter19:38
Paladinebut it is an 8MB ATI Rage iirc19:38
jphillipah19:38
jphillipseems like a better frontend than a backend :)19:38
Paladinebut it has built in mpeg4 capabilities in the CPU19:39
Paladineor tather the chipset19:39
Paladinerather19:39
jphillipinteresting, wonder if those will be available to you in linux19:39
Paladinewell the problem is I am having to go back to windows for my desktop due to some hardware and software I use which is not linux compatible19:40
Paladineso I can no longer run mythtv on the desktop and wanted a small, cheap and quiet solution19:40
PaladineI will run the win32 mythfrontend client to watch tv19:40
Paladineyeah there are linux drivers available19:40
jphillipPaladine we included a windows player on the last few discs19:41
Paladinethe thin client I have has windows xp embedded onto an IDE flash drive, but it also comes in linux flavour too19:41
jphillipnot a full frontend, but it does recordings, and might even do live tv (I don't remember)19:41
PaladineI have rippe dout the window flash drive and am putting in the 250GB laptop drive instead19:41
PaladineI am pretty confident it will work19:42
PaladineI see some people have built backends out of 266MHz pnetiums in the past19:42
jphillipPaladine http://www.sudu.dk/mythtvplayer/19:42
jphilliphe gave us a special release that works with 0.21 without having to modify the config though19:43
jphillipso you might want to try the one on our cd first19:43
Paladinewell I would need to do scheduling too since the thin client will be headless19:43
jphillipmythweb?19:43
Paladinevalid point19:43
jphillipheck I use mythweb for most things anyways19:44
jphillipeither way if you do try to get the full frontend working in windows let us know how it works out19:44
PaladineI know one guy using the same hardware for an asterisk server so it should be able to handle myth without too many problems (asterisk is CPU intensive)19:44
jphilliplast I heard it was a bit of a pain19:45
Paladinejust waiting on the HDD now19:48
Paladinehad to order the PCI expansion module from Canada (I am in the UK)19:48
Paladinebut that arrived today19:48
Paladinecheap though.  £41 GBP for the thin client, £34 GBP for the PCI expansion module, £16 GBP for the 1GB SODIMM and £56 GBP for the 250GB Laptop Drive (all including shipping)19:52
PaladineI already have the pvr250 but I suppose it should be added the cost19:53
Paladineso about £200 GBP all in19:53
PaladineI could potentially run frontend on it as well but I am concerned how well it will handle playback and recording at the same time19:55
Paladinetheoretically it should work19:55
Paladineand I will give it a go once it is setup19:55
jphillipyou should document that on the mythtv wiki or something when you are done19:55
Paladineyeah I will do19:56
Paladinethe entire system could cost as little as 130 GBP if you can get hold of the client and the expansion module from the same place in the UK (or your own country where appropriate)19:58
Paladinethe shipping from canada wasn't cheap for the pci expansion19:58
Paladineand I paid over the odds for the thin client, you can get them for as little as £25 GBP19:58
Paladinebut it was an impulse buy :)19:58
Paladinethe most expensive parts are the HDD and the TV Card20:00
jphillipPaladine wait till you get into HDTV, things get expensive in a hurry20:03
Paladineit wouldn't be suitable for HDTV20:03
Paladinealthough a mini itx solution should be viable for HDTV20:03
hadsWith a little difficulty20:37
Paladinethe atom should be able to handle hdtv20:37
hadsHuh? You mean recording or playback?20:37
* jphillip is waiting for an atom with nvidia graphics20:38
Paladineplayback20:38
Paladinerecording should be handled by your hdtv card20:38
hadsWith VPPAU you should be alright, without you wouldn't.20:38
jphilliphads I wonder how well a dual core atom would do20:39
hadsStill far to slow for CPU based playback20:39
jphillipas far as I can tell the atom in my eee can playback HD on the smaller res, but I seem to have a network bottleneck with it20:40
Hal_EmmerichQuestion: does anyone see anything in this that would cause audio to stop working, and any solution22:00

Hal_EmmerichQuestion: does anyone see anything in this that would cause audio to stop working, and any solution23:14
Hal_Emmerich http://mythbuntu.pastebin.com/f59a984e23:14
foxbuntuHal_Emmerich, audio to stop working when?23:22
Hal_EmmerichBasically23:22
Hal_EmmerichIf I install Mythbuntu, audio works23:23
Hal_EmmerichLike, if I open a movie, audio will play23:23
Hal_EmmerichBut something I'm doing seems to be consistently breaking the audio23:23
Hal_Emmerichas in the audio will not play when a movie opens23:23
Hal_EmmerichReinstalling Mythbuntu fixes it, so I know its software23:24
foxbuntuwhen does it stop working23:24
Hal_EmmerichAs far as I can tell, its some setting I'm changing when I was trying to get networking to work23:24
Hal_EmmerichThe only things I did would have been23:24
Hal_Emmerich'A: Enable permissions on the admin user to play audio, browse the internet' via the User Control panel23:25
Hal_Emmerich'B: Add a 'Wired' network'23:25
Hal_Emmerich'C: Open Mythbuntu control panel and peruse it'23:26
Hal_EmmerichI know the sound card, its an Ensoniq Audio-PCI23:26
foxbuntuwhyare you setting root to use sound?23:27
Hal_EmmerichNot Root23:27
Hal_EmmerichI didn't change anything for root23:27
Hal_EmmerichI was changing the default user ('Craig' in my case)23:27
foxbuntuok23:27
foxbuntuthats not an admin user then23:28
foxbuntuits a suder23:28
foxbuntuer23:28
foxbuntusudoer23:28
Hal_Emmerichok23:28
foxbuntu...at any rate...you shouldnt need to change any permissions for sound to work23:28
Hal_EmmerichRight, but the changing permissions was an offshoot of trying to get the internet to work23:29
Hal_Emmerichlol23:29
Hal_EmmerichIts strange, because it -was- working23:29
foxbuntuyou prob messed up permissions23:30
foxbuntuuse network manager to setup networking23:33
Hal_EmmerichRight23:33
Hal_EmmerichBut there was no checkmark beside, say 'Allow user to browse the internet'23:33
Hal_Emmerichor 'Allow user to play Sounds'23:33
foxbuntudid you create a seperate user from the one you added in the installer?23:36
